Draco Malfoy gets sorted to Gryffindor and things are no longer the same. He decides if he is going to be in Gryffindor then Harry Potter is going to become someone he can look up to. No slash, cunning Draco and resigned Harry. Told from Draco's POV.

Better be Gryffindor:

After the shock wore off Draco started to plot, he was not a Malfoy for no reason after all. He took a seat across from Potter who glared at him, well he had to start somewhere and Merlin, Potter had rather bad taste in fashion did he not? Oh well, he was going to get targeted but if he changed his tune a bit perhaps he would not have to deal with too much? His father, oh yea his father was going to be very angry, he would write his grandfather, he might be able to help here. With that resolved he turned to Potter and smiled.

"I thought you were going to Slytherin." Potter said glaring at him.

"Blunt yes, so did I, well I am here now." Draco said, "look I got off on the wrong foot with you as it were, I am sorry, I am, we are going to be in the same dorm for seven years, same house, we should at least get along."
"As if, go away Malfoy!" Weasley, this one Ron snapped.

"I am trying to be nice." Draco said taking several deep breaths, "my father is going to kill me possibly so at least let me have a nice last meal will you?"

Percy heard this and resolved to relay this to McGonagall. He did not much like Malfoys but did not want Draco killed. Draco ate well and saw Harry ate a fair amount but not enough. He was going to take care of that and so he reached over and put more vegetables on Harry's plate, yes Harry, for that is what he was going to call Harry now. Harry looked up at him startled and then went back to eating. Little did Harry know that he was about to be the project of one Draco Malfoy and would end up with a good friend in time.

It started the next morning, Draco saw what he was wearing to bed, far worse than what Ron had and went off on him. He stated that Harry was the heir to two ancient families and that he had money, clothes were not that expensive. He then demanded where Harry's heir rings were and that was not all. Ron tried to intervene but Percy sided with Draco and poor Harry tried to protest. Neville just sat shaking like a leaf and Draco went off on him too, telling him to stop being such a weakling. Once everyone was dressed for breakfast Harry went to the great hall and put some food on his plate only to get Draco to pile food on his plate.

"You are not my mum!" Harry snapped.

"No but you can't eat like that!" Draco said, "you need lots of food who raised you?"

"My aunt and uncle, they did not care what I ate." Harry said.

"And other things, clearly they had no idea who they had under their roof." Draco said.

"Lay off him!" Hermione snapped at him, "you are making him sad."

"What do you know, you are just a muggleborn!" Draco said and instead of crying Hermione got mad. "Common muggleborn girl you are!"

"I will have you know my parents are dentists, we live in a three story house with a cellar and attic. We have a house keeper and someone to come do the lawn and garden. I went to a good public school. I many not have the wealth you do but how dare you look down on me!"

"You don't know the customs of this world!" Draco snapped back.
"I looked for books and could not find any!" Hermione shot back, "you stupid swot of a boy."

"I don't know the customs either." Harry said.

"Fine, fine I see I have to teach you." Draco said waspishly.

"Only if you teach Granger too." Harry said.

"Fine, if that makes you happy." Draco groused.

He got a letter from his grandfather that stated if he did not make this situation a positive one the betterment of house Malfoy he did not need to fear disownment. He would remove the problem himself. Draco wrote back and stated he had taken Potter under his wing and Potter's muggleborn. He hoped he was not going to be in trouble for that. He then grabbed a mail order catalogue and made Harry ordered clothing that while not expensive would work better than the rags he wore. On seeing how Ron glared he talked to Percy who came up with a plan. A day later Ron was an apprentice to house Potter and Fleamont as a Stewart. Draco was using his education and connections positively in Gryffindor, well it was going to serve house Malfoy well. He was not a normal eleven year old and it showed.

Harry was resigned after a week, he was now dressed well, had gone to madam Pomfrey who had got him better glasses so he could see now. He knew how to use a quill and things were going well. Draco was bossy but he knew what he was doing. He paired Harry and Neville up in potions and due to his quizzing Harry was able to answer professor Snape's questions. He kept Neville from blowing up his cauldron and got a brief nod from Snape. Snape held Draco back and took him to his office, he knew what he was doing and while it was for the betterment of house Malfoy it was keeping peace at Hogwarts. Standing there waiting was his grandfather Arbaxas Malfoy and Draco did his level best to not show any fear.

"How are things going?" Arbaxas asked.

"Well grandfather, I was trying for Slytherin but the hat put me in Gryffindor, I am trying to use that to my advantage."
"You have taken a muggleborn under your wing, why?" Arbaxas asked.

"She is useful, she comes from a family that is well off enough, if she looses her usefulness I will cut ties, but Potter likes her well enough and he is heir to two houses." Draco said.

"If you ever think of marrying a muggleborn things will not be pleasant, she can work for you but never are you to marry her understood?" Arbaxas said, "while I do not like that your father was caught up with that dark lord I still share valid views on the muggleborn."

"Of course grandfather." Draco said.

"How is Potter?" Snape asked.
"Well enough, he knew nothing of this world. I am rectifying that now. He is getting used to things." Draco said, "he hates his fame, wants his parents more than anything, his aunt and uncle are not nice to him and he was clad as a beggar, even the Weasleys were clad better as poor as they were. That and I have to feed him as well."

"I will look into things." Arbaxas said.

"Please don't tell father." Draco said.

"Very well, I will take my leave." Arbaxas said, "as always I never was here."

Draco watched as he turned into a beautiful snowy owl and flew out and he headed back to help Harry out. Granger looked better, she was letting Parvati help her with her hair, simple Indian beauty conditioners had done wonders to help tame her hair somewhat. Neville was doing better, he had a wand that worked, and Draco wondered how that had happened. The year went on, Draco managed to make sure the dragon was got to safety and he sat by Harry's bed when he woke after going after the stone. Harry looked up at a very angry Draco who glared at him, Merlin what was Harry thinking?

"Of all the dunderheaded stupid things to do." Draco said using language from professor Snape, "what did you go and do that for?"

"I am sorry." Harry said.

"As you should be, you will live, but that was you could have died!" Draco snapped.

"Oh I forgot you carried." Harry said.

Draco felt sorry for Harry, he would have to go back to his awful relations but at least he had food and the like to take him through most of the summer. They parted and Draco heard that the Weasleys had to rescue Harry. Harry wrote him that a house elf named Dobby had tried to stop him from going to Hogwarts. Draco went to his grandfather who much to his son's displeasure was now living at Malfoy manor once more. Dobby was one of theirs and Arbaxas stated he would take care of things. Draco went away knowing that this was beyond him and got ready for his second year at Hogwarts. He found it strange his grandfather took him to the station he was told his parents had decided to go on holiday.

Draco loved second year, Harry got on the Quidditch team and Draco decided to celebrate and contacted his grandfather who in the spirit of fairness sent brand new brooms to al the teams and new training brooms to madam Hooch. The Malfoy name was rising and it was Arbaxas that came in the role of governor to oversee a "little problem". Rumors were a basilisk was removed from the school and taken to an island far away. This was the year that Sirius Black got a trial and was found not guilty, and was released. He was given twenty thousand galleons and an apology and ended up recuperating somewhere warm. His grandfather came again with one Bill Weasley near the end of the year and was on the seventh floor for some time and then was gone. Lockhart fled at the end of the year but other than that it was a fun year. Harry had good news as well and came into the common room with Sirius Black.

"He is my godfather, oh and got on the board of governors now and I get to live with him!" Harry said grinning.

"You will be staying with me cousin." Sirius said to Draco, "your parents caught a very nasty case of the grim's breath, tropical version."

"Were they vaccinated against it?" Harry asked.

"Father would not think on that." Draco said, "not sure about mother."

"I am sorry." Harry said meaning it.

The first part of Draco's summer was great, he got to be with Sirius who took them all over magical Europe and showed them all sorts of wonderful places. Harry was learning and growing so much, he was fast becoming the heir he should be and he never lost his kind and gentle heart. He did tell Sirius off for some of his so called pranks and told him he had to be nice to professor Snape as professor Snape was a nice enough fellow to him. Sure he never gave him points but he never took any away either and he graded him fairly. He told him it was not nice to be disrespectful to professor McGonagall by calling her professor Kitty even if her Animagmus form was a tabby cat.

It was the second half that was hard on Draco, his mother and father had passed from their illness and so he had to go to a funeral. What touched him is that the Weasleys showed up, sure he did not get along with them much but they were here and that was what mattered. Arbaxas was there and Draco wondered what life would be like under him. He found out quickly, he was treated well but so too were the house elves. When he tried to get Dobby to punish himself he was given two swats to his rear and told that "happy healthy servants are far more loyal and able to work than sad beaten ones". Draco never ordered a house elf to punish themselves again and saw the manor was brighter and healthier for this.

"Servants stay loyal if they are treated well, same goes for those below us, I do not like muggleborn but they are needed and useful, those that can learn to adapt to our world have a place, those that don't, do not." Arbaxas said.

"Yes grandfather." Draco replied.

"Your defense professor this year is going to be, well you will have fun." Arbaxas said.

Fun was not the word for it, Sirius Black was the defense professor and he terrified the first years. Even Snape was impressed though McGonagall nearly took his head off. But Sirius wanted to keep dark lords from appearing and felt that the international approach was best. Third year and above were learning the Patronus charm and the only downside to the year was Umbridge who came to see just what Sirius was teaching. Draco was amazed at how Sirius Black had her wrapped around his finger in short order. At first she tried to remain stern with him but in the end she called him a "wicked rogue with a silver tongue" and that she would "be watching him" which got Sirius to grin.

Things went on, third year ended and summer was not too bad. There were arrests made at the world cup and several of his father's old friends found themselves in Azkaban. Then came forth year and Harry was entered in the Tri-wizard tournament (why not tri-mage Draco could not understand) and Ron was about to go off on Harry. But Draco knew Harry had not entered his name and was going to get Ron to see reason. He did not want to loose his chance to be steward of houses Potter and Fleamont after all.

"Ron do you realize that Harry would have told you want he was doing and then probably helped Fred or George get in?" Draco said, "as if he would do this on his own."

"Who would want him entered?" Hermione asked.

"Not sure, but we have to do something about it." Draco said.

"We could help him train." Ron said.

"I could help with making something that explodes." Seamus added helpfully.

"I think that we could fear." Dean said, "but sure, why not, we all can help."

So it was that Harry ended up throwing a potion that did not explode and put the dragon to sleep at the large Hungarian Horntail. He had seen the dragons and had four potions on standby. So he took the one labeled Hungarian Horntail and threw it at her breaking the glass and causing a red mist to cover her. Once it settled she was fast asleep and he was able to get his golden egg. He got full marks from everyone but Karkaroff who gave him a seven, still at thirty seven he was in the lead. What with how he had taken care of the dragon and the article he was coached on by Draco (Merlin it was tiresome that Harry was so bad at politics) Harry was the tragic darling who was forced to compete.

It was the Yule ball that gave him fits, oh he could dance, yes Harry could because Draco made sure of that. It was a date, and Draco found one for him, Luna Lovegood was loony but she was very useful and smart. Draco made sure she never lost anything again and in return she was Harry's date. It was a good move, she could dance and dance well and looked stunning in the silver robes trimmed in blue against Harry's dark green that went well with his eyes. The ball was a success and nearly went off on Hermione for dating Krum, but Draco stopped that, he did not need to see that. Then there was the egg.

"I have an hour to find someone at the bottom of the lake." Harry said, "I am poor swimmer."

"You are going to train." Draco said.

"It is the middle of winter I am not swimming in the lake!" Harry snapped.

"Hogwarts has baths."

"She does?"

"You are hopeless, yes, and you are going to train, oi Longbottom find us a plant that helps one breathe underwater!"

In the end Neville came through and Harry ended up first far ahead of everyone else. He found his hostage was Luna and got her to the surface quickly. She woke up smiling and gave a chaste kiss to his cheek that warmed him up. Draco had to pull strings and some threats to get Rita to print an article about sweet chaste young love and how Harry was finding happiness despite the tragic things in his life. Honestly what did he have to do around here? Draco was finding being a Gryffindor tiresome at times. At least the magical world found Harry darling and sweet and he was going to throw up. Despite it being his idea.

The third task got him to see red. Voldemort would pay, he had taken another pureblood, another line might die out of the Diggory's did not have the babe that Mrs. Diggory was growing now. Now the evil dark lord was back and Draco did not need that. He was bad for business and no, he was not answering the summons, he was not a death eater and politely told the dark lord he was not interested as he did not see value in joining him at that time. He told him he disliked him killing off pureblood lines and he was not interested in doing the same. He joined Sirius at his townhome and nearly knocked his cousin down for how he treated Kreacher. Draco was nice to him, Harry was nice to him despite no-one liking the townhome.

"Hello Kreacher I am Draco Malfoy, I am glad to meet you." Draco said, "this is Harry Potter, heir to two ancient and noble families."

"Hello." Harry said, "you know my godfather made this bet with me, honestly I don't know why, but he said that I could not convince you to clean this house. Now you and I know you can, but well would you like help? I have a female elf who would love to come help."

"Female?" Kreacher said looking up at him, "bring her, see if she passes the test."

"Harry I am proud of you." Draco said, "you can learn."

"Piss off Draco." Harry replied.

Winky came and Kreacher fell in love. Both house elves set about cleaning the house from top to bottom and no. That was not something Draco was going to think on. Not him, but the townhouse was happy and bright and he had so much fun winding up his dear great aunt that she was speechless. He talked of gold and more gold and fleeing muggleborn and so on and on and on. It was fun and Sirius agreed with him (well just to tick off his mother) and that was fun. Summer came to an end and fifth year came with Umbridge back. Draco stuck by Harry and when she tried to punish him a slip to the papers about their "darling sweet Harry being tortured by the daughter of a muggle and squib" made Draco's day.

Draco knew that getting sorted to Gryffindor had been good. Harry was a friend, a true friend, as were Ron and even that annoying muggleborn Granger. He was finding that his life was far better than it could have been. He knew that soon enough Harry would have to face the evil dark lord and he was going to be right by his side. How could he not? Harry was no dark lord like his father had thought, Harry was a good man and one that Draco found he did not mind following at all. After all is that not what good friends did?
