How did he meet her? "How did he meet her," you ask. As if it's as simple an explanation as that!
It was a March day, when the sky was so pale blue it could've been white, the sun was shining, the outskirts of the Forbidden Forest were as forbidden as ever, there were creatures yet to be discovered in the underbrush, Hagrid was long out of sight, and Xenophilius started to panic when he heard the tell-tale crunch of someone approaching him.
It hadn't occurred to him before that "Mrs. Xenophilius Lovegood" was befitting of that sharp Gryffindor witch.

Just entertaining the fun idea that maybe Luna's mum is where she got her bravery, though yes, I know that not only Gryffs have courage.
