Initially, Lucius accepted the engagement because Narcissa's photo was the prettiest in the pile his parents presented him.
His heart wasn't in it and his mind wouldn't allow it because his interests were elsewhere. He had other priorities, such as gaining influence the ways his bloodline had done throughout the decades, through money and favors.
"Instead of following through on a favor, talk in a roundabout manner that promises nothing and leads the other party to believe you've made a deal—but you haven't," Narcissa suggested the first time they spoke.
Suddenly, Lucius found himself rather excited to marry her.
