Kami closed her eyes as she felt the sea breeze blowing through her hair, feeling her nerves starting to kick in. Maze would be there in a matter of minutes, none the wiser to why Kami had asked her to come to the beach. She was sitting crossed legged at the shore, a bottle of champagne at her side, wearing a thin tank top and shorts, revealing a little more skin than usual. She couldn't even remember the last date she had been on. Maybe she should have played it safe and gone to a restaurant—
"Hey" A familiar voice announced, as Kami's eyes snapped open.
She whipped around, almost stumbling over her own feet as she pushed herself into a standing position. Maze was looking at her with a soft expression that she seemed to reserve for Kami alone. As usual, Maze wasn't shy about letting her gaze roam over Kami, biting her lip as she stared at her cleavage.
"You wore the dress" Kami grinned, seeing Maze was clad in the gorgeous red dress she had been wearing in Lux a few weeks ago.
"You said no leather" Maze shrugged, taking a step closer to her.
"I thought it might be because you were planning to ask me out again" Kami smirked, watching as Maze's eyes went wide.
"W-what?" Maze stuttered, uncharacteristically.
"Lucifer told me everything—" Kami began, but Maze was quick to cut her off.
"Oh, he is going to wish he had gone back to hell once I'm done with him" Maze muttered, as Kami stepped closer to her.
"Actually, I think you're gonna' be thanking him" Kami exclaimed, grabbing the champagne bottle by her feet.
"Mazikeen, welcome to your first date" Kami beamed, holding out her arms, watching Maze's forehead wrinkle.
"…With you?" Maze gaped.
"No, with that dog walker over there" Kami replied sarcastically, pointing over to an elderly man with his Labrador a little further up the beach.
"He's not really my type" Maze murmured, making Kami snort.
"Of course with me, you dummy! I'd be crazy not to ask you out" Kami insisted.
"But why? I'm just…just a demon" Maze pointed out, causing Kami's eyes to soften.
"You're not just anything, Maze. You're fucking awesome. And I really like you" Kami told her, as a smile spread over Maze's lips.
"I am awesome, aren't I?" Maze grinned.
"Hell yes, you are" Kami giggled.
"Is a beach a common place for a date?" Maze inquired, as Kami began trying to open the champagne bottle.
"Who knows. But we're not exactly normal, are we?" Kami exclaimed, still attempting and failing to pop the cork.
"Here" Maze mumbled, reaching out to grab the bottle and giving a hard tug.
Her eyes widened when not only the cork popped off, but also half the bottle, causing some champagne to spill onto the sand. Maze let out a sigh, wondering if she was already ruining the date when she heard Kami laugh again.
"Well, that's one way to do it" Kami giggled, taking the broken bottle from her hands and placing it onto the nearby blanket, careful not to cut herself.
"Take off your shoes" Kami told her, a few seconds later, as Maze did as she was asked, without hesitation.
Kami was already shoeless, and as soon as Maze had removed her heels, Kami was grabbing her hand and pulling her towards the waves. A frown grew on Maze's face as they came to a stop just in front of the water, and wondered what Kami was planning.
"I'm guessing you've never been to the beach before" Kami guessed, watching Maze nod.
"I find there are better ways of getting wet" Maze smirked, making Kami giggle again.
"Well then, it's time for you to experiment a little" Kami grinned, pulling her closer as their feet were soon being lapped at by the waves.
Maze was surprised as Kami suddenly jumped behind her, placing her hands over Maze's eyes. All Maze could hear was the waves crashing into the beach around her and Kami's soft breathing on her neck. The warm sand underneath her feet, combined with the water splashing over her ankles gave her a strange feeling. It was almost…peaceful?
"How is it?" Kami asked, when Maze still hadn't said anything.
"Different" Maze replied, finding it was the only word that fit.
"Good different?" Kami inquired, letting her hands fall from Maze's eyes to her shoulders.
"Really good" Maze exclaimed, feeling Kami wrap her arms around her from behind.
"Do you trust me?" Kami questioned, as Maze nodded before she knew what she was doing.
A second later, Kami pulled away a little, now wrapping an arm around Maze's waist as she dragged her further into the water. The demon's eyes shot open as she felt the waves crashing against them, drenching her red dress, her mouth going slack. The water was a little colder than she had been expecting, but it wasn't an unpleasant feeling.
"I figured you haven't gone swimming in the sea either" Kami grinned, trailing her hand over Maze's waist and arm until she was holding onto the older woman's hand.
"Isn't this the sort of thing you wear a bikini for?" Maze pointed out, as Kami shrugged.
"That can be for date number two" Kami smirked, splashing some water at Maze, who let out an indignant cry.
Before long, the two women had descended into a water fight, splashing at each other until they were completely drenched from head to toe. Kami pulled them a little deeper into the sea until their feet were barely touching the bottom and saw the way Maze tensed.
"Wait…" Maze trailed off, an embarrassed look on her face.
"What?" Kami frowned, surprised to see Maze's cheeks growing red.
"I can't really…you know…" Maze stuttered, making a strange gesture with her hands.
"Swim?" Kami guessed, causing the demon to nod.
"But Lucifer owns a swimming pool. I've seen you in it" Kami pointed out.
"I know how to lounge in a pool, not swim in the sea" Maze retorted, as Kami gave her hand a squeeze.
"We don't have to go far…besides, I'll look out for you" Kami smiled.
Holding onto her tightly, Maze allowed herself to be pulled deeper into the waves, her eyes widening as her feet could no longer reach the sand at the bottom. Kami's hands were suddenly around her waist, pulling her close until their faces were just inches from each other. Maze's hands instinctively wrapped around Kami's shoulders, as the younger girl kept them afloat. Maze felt a strange emotion bubble up in her chest. Fear? But it wasn't because she was in the sea…but because of how close Kami's lips were to her own.
"So, how have I done as far as first dates go?" Kami inquired, bringing Maze out of her thoughts, as her eyes snapped back up to Kami's eyes.
"Not bad" Maze smirked, as Kami beamed at her.
Kami felt one of Maze's hands moved to the nape of her neck, bringing their faces a little closer, as the demon's gaze fell to Kami's lips. The girl in question could feel how her heart rate picked up, a flush growing on her cheeks. Leaning in tortiously slow, her eyes fluttered shut at the last second, feeling their lips brush together, as Maze let out a shaky breath—
The two jumped as a sharp ringing sound interrupted their kiss, their heads whipping back to the shore, where Kami's phone was now ringing. With a loud groan, Kami leant forward, letting her forehead rest against Maze's for a second.
"Maybe we can ignore it…" Kami trailed off, as the phone kept ringing.
"I could smash it?" Maze offered, making the younger girl giggle.
"…I better answer it. Could be Chlo or Trixie" Kami murmured, as she helped pull Maze closer to the beach.
"Well, whoever it is, they're gonna' be sorry" Maze scoffed, as the girls made their way out of the water, their clothes dripping.
"It's my sister. She knows I was gonna' ask you out, must be important" Kami exclaimed, as Maze wrung out her wet hair, with a nod.
"Chlo, I love you, but you better have a damn good reason for…what do you mean? You what?!" Kami cried, pinching the bridge of her nose, as Maze gave her a confused look.
How Chloe could think even for a split second that Lucifer had anything to do with the murder of their latest victim, was beyond Kami. She had seen first-hand how horrified Lucifer was at the crime scene of the nineteen-year-old. He had nothing to do with it. Kami had been able to hear the guilt in Chloe's voice when she rang her to explain that Lucifer had been taken off the case when they had found Corazon, Rose's boyfriend, brutally murdered. Not to mention Lucifer's name painted in red paint at the crime scene. Kami could understand that it was a conflict of interest, but if anything she felt it proved Lucifer's innocence more. Who would paint their own name at a crime scene? Maze had rushed to Lux, hoping to find Lucifer before he did anything stupid, whilst Kami tried to find him on the streets. When she received a phone call from the bartender soon after stating that Lucifer was nowhere to be seen, she started to get worried. Lucifer didn't take betrayal well.
Kami was surprised when she spotted the club owner just outside Lux, caught in a heated confrontation with the preacher from before. Her eyes went wide when Lucifer suddenly grabbed the man by the neck, pushing him up against a lamppost. Kami's jaw dropped open when Lucifer somehow managed to raise the man far above his head, strangling him now, showing once again his impossible strength.
"I should destroy you!" Lucifer exclaimed, his eyes darkening.
"Lucifer, stop!" Kami cried, racing forward and grabbing his arm.
Lucifer's eyes were immediately drawn to hers, as he dropped the preacher to the ground, coming out of the angry trance he had been in. The preacher clawed at his sore neck, his eyes bloodshot, looking like he was about to pass out.
"Hey! Hey, are you okay?" Kami questioned, reaching up to place her palm against Lucifer's cheek, turning him to face her.
As he leaned into her touch, Lucifer felt everything else disappear. All the anger just bled away. Kami could feel how he had relaxed, sending a soft smile his way, having rarely seen him look so vulnerable.
"I was the one…getting strangled…" The preacher stuttered out, as Kami shot him a glare.
"Leave. Now" Kami warned, as the preacher muttered something under his breath, but did as she said.
"C'mon, let's get you home" Kami insisted, taking her hand away from his face, only to take his hand in her own a second later, pulling him away.
"You come to have a go at me as well?" Lucifer grumbled, as they pushed themselves through the crowd that had formed around them.
"I know you had nothing to do with the murders, Lucifer" Kami stated, as they neared the entrance to Lux.
"You do?" Lucifer frowned, surprised.
"Of course, I do. I never doubted you for a second" Kami admitted, as Lucifer's eyes softened.
"Why?" He couldn't help but ask, as Kami mulled this over.
"…Because I know you. The real you. You're a good man" Kami told him, watching as Lucifer came to a halt, his mouth having gone slack.
Kami realised they were just outside Lux, glad to see that Maze hadn't locked up and went to open the door. When she turned around, Lucifer was still standing where she had left him, his hand placed over his chest, looking shaken to the core.
"Lucifer? What's wrong?" Kami inquired, tilting her head.
"Kami—" Lucifer began, when Maze suddenly rushed for the door.
"Where the hell have you been?!" Maze exclaimed angrily at Lucifer.
"Choking out preachers, you know, the usual" Kami snorted, as she began to tell Maze what she had seen.
Lucifer was still in too much shock to move or even talk, his eyes never leaving Kami, as his heart continued to thump madly under his chest.
A good man?
She really believed that. There was only genuine emotion in her eyes when she had spoken the words. Why didn't Kami see the monster that everyone else did when they looked at him? And why did that make him feel…something so deeply he forget how to breathe for a moment?
"Not how I expected to be spending the night" Kami mumbled, taking a swig from her glass of whiskey, with Maze beside her.
"Same here. I was hoping it would end in sex" Maze admitted, making Kami snort.
"Oh, you think I'm easy then?" Kami challenged, quirking an eyebrow.
"No! No, I just meant…I mean…isn't that what…unless you—" Maze stuttered, a horrified expression on her face, until Kami nudged her with her elbow.
"Sorry, Maze. I just like teasing you too much" Kami giggled, seeing how Maze relaxed.
"Well, I wouldn't mind teasing you either, if you get my drift" Maze purred, leaning closer to her.
"Is that a promise?" Kami smirked, her gaze dropping to Mazes' lips.
There was a sudden gust of air a moment later, as Kami saw someone approaching them out of her peripheral vision. She let out a long sigh when she saw it was Lucifer's brother, resisting the urge to facepalm. How many more times were she and Maze going to be interrupted?
"I need to speak to Lucifer" Amenadiel announced.
"Then go speak to him. He's in the penthouse" Maze hissed, equally annoyed.
"I believe the conversation will go…smoother if you are there, Mazikeen. You've always helped him see reason before" Amenadiel pointed out, as Maze glared at him.
"I'm not his keeper" Maze retorted.
"Please. This is important" Amenadiel insisted, as the two stared at each other for a few seconds, before Maze reluctantly jumped down from her stool.
"I'll be back" Maze muttered, gesturing for Amenadiel to walk towards the elevator.
"You want any backup? I could—" Kami began, pushing herself into a standing position.
"No! No, it's a…family matter. Don't go anywhere" Maze exclaimed, giving her a quick smile before she followed after Amenadiel.
Kami frowned as she watched the pair enter the elevator, sensing that they were both hiding something. There was still so much she didn't know about Maze. About Lucifer. She didn't even know how they met, why they moved to L.A…hell, she didn't even know Maze's surname. Did she even have one—
Her thoughts were cut off when the elevator pinged open a couple of minutes later, but instead of Maze and Amenadiel stepping out, she spotted Malcolm, who took off sprinting before the metal doors had even opened properly. The older man had a manic look in his eyes that made Kami tense.
"Oh, look who it is…baby Decker" Malcolm grinned, tilting his head.
"What the fuck are you doing here?" Kami asked.
"I followed Lucifer here from the crime scene" Malcolm shrugged.
"You're aware that's called stalking, right?" Kami scoffed, as Malcolm suddenly went very still, tilting his head further to the side, before he began giggling.
He fell into a fit of laughter almost immediately, clutching at his stomach. Kami grew uncomfortable as Malcolm still didn't stop, his face growing almost painfully red.
"What is wrong with you?" Kami frowned, as Malcolm stumbled towards her.
"I just killed two people" He informed her, raising his hands out as if it was some big joke.
"That's not funny, Malcolm" Kami mumbled, backing up a few steps, gripping her phone tightly in her hand.
"Really? Because personally…I think it's fucking hilarious" Malcolm exclaimed, laughing maniacally.
"…It was you. The murders. You killed those kids" Kami gulped, her eyes darting around the empty bar for a weapon but coming up empty.
"What can I say? I guess I snapped" Malcolm yelled, slapping his hands together, making Kami jump.
"You're sick" Kami gaped, watching as Malcolm licked his lips.
"I'm angry. I'm so fucking angry all the time! I want to…to break everything! Everyone!" Malcolm shouted.
"Look, I can help, okay? Just…come to the station. We can sort this out—" Kami exclaimed, but he cut her off.
"No…no, no, no…NO!" Malcolm repeated, almost shaking now.
"Okay…okay, that's fine. Just calm down" Kami told him, holding out a hand in front of her, expecting Malcolm to lunge at her any second.
"I can feel it…racing around in here…all the way down to my fingers…" Malcolm trailed off, raising his hands to his face.
Kami's forehead wrinkled as she saw his blackened fingernails, which looked almost necrotic. She let out a choked gasp when Malcolm suddenly brought one of the nails to his mouth, ripping away at the skin there, blood now coating his lips.
"Malcolm, stop it!" Kami cried, seeing how he was practically chewing on his finger now.
Instantly, Malcolm pulled his finger away, as Kami gagged, seeing how a piece of his flesh hung from his teeth. Malcolm suddenly went very still, tilting his head from side to side, before letting out a harsh laugh.
"…You're one of them, aren't you?!" Malcolm insisted, making Kami flinch.
"I…I don't know what you're talking about!" Kami replied, her eyes full of fear.
"She doesn't know…she doesn't know!" Malcolm grinned, clapping his hands together.
"Malcolm, I need you to listen to me, okay? There is something very wrong with you. I think you're sick or something. Just calm down, think about what you're doing—" Kami murmured, but was cut off as Malcolm suddenly lunged forward, his hand going around her neck.
"I see it now. I see it in your eyes. You've got it too" Malcolm gaped, as Kami's hands clawed at his tight grip over her neck.
"M-malcolm…" Kami panted, letting out a choking sound.
"It's there. Deep down. How…how do you bear it?" Malcolm muttered, his other hand reaching out to brush against the now healed wounds his fingernails had left on her the first time they met.
"Let go of me!" Kami screamed.
She was surprised when Malcolm jumped backwards with such force that he stumbled over, crashing on the floor with a loud thud. He stared up at her with wide eyes, his mouth opening and closing a few times. He looked...scared?
"Do you see? Do you see it now?!" Malcolm exclaimed.
"Kami!" A familiar voice yelled, as her head snapped to the left, seeing Lucifer racing towards her.
Malcolm was on his feet, sprinting away before anyone could stop him. Kami hadn't seen Maze just behind Lucifer, who took off running after Malcolm, a deadly look on her face. Lucifer came to a halt in front of Kami, placing his hand on her shoulder.
"Are you alright? Kami?" Lucifer insisted, when the younger girl didn't answer.
"Y-yeah…I'm okay. He just…I thought he was going to…" Kami trailed off, as Lucifer felt her trembling under his touch.
"You're safe now" Lucifer told her, pulling her closer, as he wrapped his arms around her shoulders.
Kami let out a shaky breath as she pressed herself against Lucifer's chest, feeling one of his hands rubbing down her back. She blinked away unshed tears and tried to regain control of her breathing as Lucifer held onto her tightly. She had never seen anything like that. Not since…
"The look in his eyes, Lucifer. It was just…pure madness" Kami mumbled, against his chest.
"Well, once Maze catches up with him, I don't think Malcolm will causing us trouble anymore" Lucifer pointed out.
Twenty minutes later, Kami found herself in the bathroom of the club, splashing cold water over her face. She had tried to call Chloe as soon as she could hold a sentence together, but her sister's phone was off. Leaving her a voicemail, stating she knew who was responsible for the recent murders and to meet her in Lux, meant Kami had nothing more to do than to wait. She could have simply phoned 911 but she wasn't sure if they'd listen to her, or even believe her. Chloe was the one she could rely on. Always had been. Brushing a hand through her hair, Kami tried to rid the image of Malcolm's crazy eyes from her mind, but it was to no avail. And the things he'd been saying? That she was one of them? What the hell did that mean? Ever since she came back to L.A, nothing made sense. Shaking her head, she exited the bathroom and made her way back towards the bar. She came to a halt when she saw her sister was already there…with her gun raised at Lucifer.
"Chlo? What the hell are you…" Kami trailed off when she spotted a body by Chloe's feet.
The Preacher. Kami had been so distracted by Malcolm's crazy antics, somehow she had managed to miss the body of the man behind the bar. With a singular bullet wound to his head, Kami had no doubt in her mind who must have killed the preacher. From the stiff appearance of his body, he had been dead for some time. When they first got into Lux, Maze, Lucifer and herself ventured up to the penthouse, only coming back down twenty minutes later when Lucifer insisted he needed some time alone. Was that when Malcolm had killed the preacher?
"Kami, stay back" Chloe warned her, as a group of uniformed officers rushed down the stairs of the nightclub.
"Lucifer Morningstar, you're under arrest" Chloe exclaimed, with shaking hands.
"Come on, Detective. You can't seriously believe I killed that pathetic malcontent" Lucifer exclaimed, his hands raised in the air.
"It doesn't matter what I believe" Chloe retorted, as the other officers all raised their guns at Lucifer, who barely seemed to notice.
"Yes, it does. I thought you were different...but you're just like all the others" Lucifer muttered, throwing his hands down angrily.
"He didn't kill that man! It was Malcolm, he's been framing Lucifer since the beginning!" Kami exclaimed, coming to stand by her sister's side.
"Malcolm's a cop. One of our own, he wouldn't do that" An older officer insisted, as Kami glared at him.
"Right, cause' a corrupt cop is such a rare thing?" Kami scoffed, glad when she saw Chloe slowly lowering her gun.
"Lucifer, come peacefully. We'll go to the station-" Chloe began, but Lucifer cut her off quickly.
"No. We won't. You really believed I could do all those awful things...I thought things would be different here, that I could finally be my own man. But what's the point? I'm the Devil, it's time I accepted my role in all of this" Lucifer spat out, marching towards Chloe, who instinctively raised her gun.
"What are you waiting for? You wanted your bad guy. Well, here he is, gift-wrapped just for you!" Lucifer exclaimed, holding out his hands, watching as the officer's twitched.
"Lucifer, stop! You're gonna get yourself killed!" Kami cried, panicking.
"You! Newbie. Come on. Riddle me with bullets, so you can go home, drink an ice-cold beer, and feel better about yourselves!" Lucifer goaded, pointing at an officer who had only been on the job for a couple of weeks.
"Don't shoot him. He's unarmed" Chloe stated, as she watched the officer's finger edge towards the trigger.
"Oh, you don't know that. Maybe I have a gun-" Lucifer exclaimed, placing his hand into his suit jacket.
"No!" Kami yelled, suddenly rushing forwards, coming to stand in front of Lucifer.
"What the hell are you doing?!" Lucifer gaped, his eyes wide.
"He's innocent, why can't you see that?" Kami told them, holding a protective arm out in front of the older man.
"Put your guns down. She's a civilian, stand down!" Chloe ordered, her voice thick with panic, taking a step closer to the pair.
"Decker, we can't just let this guy go!" The older officer pointed out, as none of them lowered their guns.
"If you want to shoot him...you're gonna' have to shoot me too" Kami warned, a determined look in her eyes.
"Go back to your sister...I'm not worth losing your life over" Lucifer mumbled, placing his hand on her shoulder.
"This is not the time for your self esteem issues, Lucifer" Kami retorted.
"Please, Kami" Lucifer all but begged, trying to push her behind him.
"H-hey, let go of her!" The newbie officer warned, thinking Lucifer's intentions were malicious.
Kami opened her mouth to tell the officer to put down his gun, when a figure at the back of the club caught her eye. Maze. A look of fear flashed over Mazikeen's face as she saw the position the two people she cared about the most were in. She was taking her daggers out a second later, as Kami gave a quick shake of her head.
"You're all so blind. You can't see...what's really going on" Kami exclaimed, gesturing towards the far wall as Maze gave her a confused look.
"There's a way out of this...if we're plunged into darkness" Kami went on, waving her hand at the wall again.
"What?" Maze mouthed silently, still unseen by the officers.
"Oh for God's sake, Maze turn out the lights!" Kami yelled, as Maze instantly threw one of her daggers at the light switch.
The next few moments happened in slow motion, as all the officers bar the newbie, whipped around with their guns raised on Maze, just as the lights went out. Lucifer's gaze had never left the new officer and saw how his finger twitched on the trigger instinctively as they too were plunged into darkness. Kami heard a loud bang, when strong arms suddenly wrapped around, pulling her to the ground, as a bullet whizzed towards them.
Author's Notes: I hope you all enjoyed this chapter! I hope you're enjoying the love triangle, but I'm definitely still planning on Lucifer/OC endgame. I'm halfway through watching the new season, I've heard it's a tearjerker near the end! Please leave a review:)
NicoleR85: Thanks for reviewing!
unlimited21: Yes, the main pairing is Lucifer/OC but there will be some Maze/OC too!
CJ/Oddball: Thanks for the review:) I like your theory, and you're definitely on the right track. Kami's difficult relationship with her parents is going to come into play a lot more in future chapters.
