"You two are nauseatingly adorable" Linda grinned, from where she was sitting at the bar in Lux.
"Take that back" Maze huffed, with a grimace.
This only made Linda grin harder, a fond look on her face as she watched Maze pour a drink of her girlfriend, her other arm wrapped over Kami's shoulders. She couldn't help but be impressed with how Maze was settling into a rather domestic lifestyle. Not to mention the fact that she seemed genuinely happy.
"Hmm, maybe cute is a better word?" Kami teased, as Maze handed her the drink.
"I hate you both" Maze exclaimed, making both women laugh.
"On a serious note, I really do admire the steps you're making, Maze. Changing old habits" Linda congratulated, as Kami took a sip of the drink.
"Well, don't admire too much. I'm still coming to Lux" Maze pointed out.
"Baby steps are fine. Plus, the view here is…nice" Linda smirked, her gaze falling on a bartender a few metres away, who caught her eye.
"Yeah, it is" Maze agreed, only having eyes for her girlfriend, leaning in to press a chaste kiss to Kami's lips.
"So, this is serious then?" Linda inquired, as the pair pulled apart.
"Yeah, I mean…neither of us have been in a relationship before, so we're taking it slow but…it's going well" Kami grinned, as Maze's hand wandered down to slap her ass.
"Really well" Maze added, pulling Kami closer to her.
"You two remind me of me and my first girlfriend. Now, that was a crazy summer…" Linda trailed off, with a raised eyebrow.
"Uh, you can't just leave it like that. Spill the beans, Doctor" Kami insisted.
"And don't forget to leave out any of the dirty details" Maze told her, excitedly.
"Well, it was my first year at medical school and—" Linda began but was cut off by a chipper voice.
"Hi, Maze" Charlotte Richards announced, walking past the three, numerous clothes bags in hand.
"Human" The blonde nodded to Linda before her eyes fell on Kami.
"And…you" Charlotte mumbled to Kami, before making a speedy exit, appearing uncomfortable all of a sudden.
"She's still here?" Kami questioned, as Maze nodded with annoyance.
"Who was that?" Linda frowned.
"Lucifer's step-mom. She's hell in heels basically" Kami stated, making Maze scoff.
"You have no idea how true that is. I'll be right back" Maze informed them, before following in Charlotte's footsteps.
"No maiming anyone remember!" Kami called after her, not sure what Maze was planning to do.
"So, Lucifer's mother…well, stepmother really is in town? I suppose not everything he says is a delusion after all" Linda murmured, as Kami's phone beeped, a message popping up on the screen from her sister.
Kami let out a sigh when she saw what the message said. Her sister had been blowing up her phone for the last hour, seeming as incessant as ever. Linda gave her a questioning look, ever the therapist.
"Chlo wants me to talk to Lucifer. He's blown off their latest case" Kami explained, as Linda nodded.
"And you don't want to?" Linda asked.
"No, it's not that. I just don't understand why she's asking me. I mean, she's his partner. It's not like I'm the Lucifer-whisperer or something" Kami huffed, as Linda looked away with an amused expression.
"What?" Kami inquired.
"Well, you and Lucifer do have a connection. In fact, I'm a little surprised to see you and Maze together considering that…bond" Linda admitted, using her words carefully.
"Meaning?" Kami pushed, a defensive tone to her voice.
"When we were working on that case together a few months ago, I thought there was something going on between the two of you" Linda confessed, as Kami let out a loud scoff, her eyes wide.
"That's…that's ridiculous! Lucifer doesn't like me. Not in that way" Kami retorted, as Linda pursed her lips.
"And if I said he did? Would that change things for you?" Linda pushed, as Kami shook her head.
"Okay, I came here to drink, not for a therapy session. And besides, the only person Lucifer has a thing for is my sister—" Kami began, when a voice boomed from behind her.
"I don't" Lucifer exclaimed, making Kami jump out of her skin, as she whipped around.
"…You don't?" Kami frowned.
"No. Of course, if the case arose where the Detective wanted a quickie in the—" Lucifer began, when Kami cut him off this time.
"Nope. No, I do not want to hear the end of that sentence. But speaking of my sister, what have you done to piss her off now?" Kami asked, as Lucifer gave her an incredulous look.
"I merely pointed out that the newest serial killer in L.A is doing excellent work ridding this world of some of its vile filth" Lucifer explained, as Kami let out a long sigh.
"And by vile filth you mean…?" Kami pushed.
"Our latest two victims. They posted some illicit videos on Wobble, a rather humorous online company, you should this one video of a man jumping on top of a rhino. Very amusing" Lucifer chuckled.
"And because they posted some videos you think they deserve to die?" Kami huffed, crossing her arms.
"One which video resulted in a 27-year-old third-grade teacher killing herself. It's justice" Lucifer retorted.
"It's still murder, Lucifer. And whoever is doing this isn't just going to stop. They're going to keep killing until they run out of people they think deserve to die and move onto everyone else" Kami went on, as Lucifer's forehead wrinkled.
"…I suppose you do have a point" Lucifer mumbled.
"Look, I understand that sometimes the cops get things wrong and try to hunt down people they shouldn't but this killer? They need to be stopped, Luce" Kami insisted, reaching out to touch his arm, as Lucifer's eyes softened a little.
"Alright, alright. I'll go back on the case, if…you join me. Come on, don't pretend you have anything better to do" Lucifer grinned, as Kami rolled her eyes, pulling her hand away.
"What's in it for me?" Kami asked.
"Well, my marvellous company, of course" Lucifer smirked, making Kami giggle softly.
"How could I say no?" Kami replied, with a soft smile.
"Well, I better go make sure my mothe…step-mother hasn't got herself into any trouble and join you shortly. Oh…hello, Doctor. Have you been there for long?" Lucifer frowned at the blonde, before walking towards the steps to his penthouse.
As soon as his back was turned, Linda quirked an eyebrow at Kami, who gave the older woman a shrug, not sure what she was getting at. She had almost forgotten what they were talking about before Lucifer arrived.
"Like I said. There's a connection there" Linda stated.
"Lucifer has a connection with a lot of people. Like…thousands of people probably" Kami scoffed, amusedly.
"But he doesn't listen to them. In fact, I don't think he really listens to anyone but you, Kami" Linda suggested, making the younger girl halt.
"He listens to you" Kami retorted, as Linda scoffed loudly.
"I think our whole relationship is defined by how my advice goes in one ear and out the other. Speaking of which, if you have feelings for…and she's gone…" Linda trailed off, when she turned around to see Kami making a speedy getaway.
"Why do I even bother?" Linda muttered, signalling to the bartender to pull her another drink.
Kami had been pacing outside the office of Wobble's moderators for the past ten minutes, trying to focus on the case, but something else was getting in the way. Something six-foot, and as well dressed as ever who was walking towards her. Surely if Lucifer really had feelings for her, he would have said something?
"So, do we really think the killer is one of these misanthropes?" Lucifer inquired, stopping Kami in her tracks.
"You really don't like Chloe?" Kami blurted out, as Lucifer's mouth hung agape for a moment, trying to think of a reply.
"…No? What does that have to do with the case?" Lucifer queried.
"It's just…you always gave the impression that you had a thing for her. I mean, that's why you started consulting for the police, right?" Kami pushed.
"When I first met Chloe, I was interested. She was very different from anyone I ever met. I wanted to get to know her better, find out what was so special about her" Lucifer explained, as Kami nodded slowly.
"What changed then?" Kami asked, as Lucifer opened his mouth but closed it again after a few seconds.
"…My interests moved on" Lucifer shrugged, not meeting her eyes.
"Why keep doing this job then?" Kami asked, making Lucifer falter.
"I don't know" He admitted, his forehead wrinkled.
"And I can't seem to figure out who this killer is. I mean, serial killers usually start with someone they know. If the killer worked here, they knew one of our victims, maybe that made them snap? It awakened something in them. Something that was always there, just fighting to get out…" Kami trailed off, a far off look in her eyes.
"But...they were just trying to do a job. A job no one else wanted. No one wants to be the custodian of the world's filth. Why would they? Absorbing the worst humanity has to offer, day in and day out. Changes you" Lucifer mumbled, as Kami broke from her trance.
"You think this job turned them into a killer?" Kami questioned.
"People don't arrive broken. They start with passion and yearning till something comes along that disabuses them of those notions" Lucifer explained, as Kami's eyes softened.
"We're not talking about the case again, are we?" Kami guessed, watching Lucifer nod slowly.
"Look, I don't know much about your past and what you've done, Lucifer, but I know who the man in front of me is. You're nothing like this killer" Kami insisted.
"I've done monstrous things too in the name of punishment" Lucifer went on, as Kami wanted to reach out to him.
Seeing someone who was usually so bubbly and confident as Lucifer looking so downtrodden was hard to watch. He hid it well, but Kami knew Lucifer was full of self-hatred. More than anyone she had ever met.
"But that is why you do this job, Luce. Because you have changed. You want to see people punished, but in the right way. Because you, Mr Morningstar, are a good person. You just need to start believing it" Kami told him, watching his brown eyes practically light up.
Neither moved for a few seconds, their eyes still connected, until Lucifer leaned forward a little. Before Kami knew what was happening, Lucifer had pressed a soft kiss to her cheek, causing her heart to flutter almost painfully in her chest. As Lucifer pulled away, a small smile tugged at his lips when he saw the blush rising up her cheeks. He opened his mouth to speak, finding words were desperate to flow from his lips when a middle-aged man in plaid suddenly appeared from nowhere.
"Hi, you wanted to talk to one of the moderators?" He announced as Kami ran a hand through her hair, hoping her cheeks were less red.
"Uh…yes. We, um…who's had this job the longest?" Kami stuttered over her words, as Lucifer's grin grew wider, endeared by her reaction.
"Um...maybe me. I've been at it two whole months" The man chuckled.
"Not exactly the template for a serial killer" Lucifer mumbled, taking in the man's dirty clothes and glasses.
"Anyone else?" Kami asked.
"No. Other than Leila, of course. My boss. She started as a moderator before the company blew up. She was the first of us" He informed them, as the pair shared a look.
"Thanks" Kami nodded to the man, who gave them a quick smile.
"You guys are super cute by the way. Remind me of me and my wife when we first met" He stated, as the blush was instantly back on Kami's face.
"I highly doubt that" Lucifer scoffed, making the older man pout before he walking away in a huff.
"I spoke to this Leila with the Detective earlier. If she is the killer, she's known what we've been doing every step of the way" Lucifer warned, in a serious tone.
Kami wasn't surprised when Chloe told her she was off the case as soon as their call ended. She understood Chloe's intentions, that she was just trying to protect her. That, of course, didn't mean Kami was going to listen. It was easy to follow Lucifer's flashy car the Wobble server warehouse, and even easier to follow her sister and Lucifer into danger. She stayed hidden behind one of the servers while the true killer, a man around his thirties who Kami had never seen before, revealed himself. He forced Leila, who was tied up, to pour gasoline over herself, a lighter in his hand. There was no bluff in his eyes as he approached his latest victim, pulling a gun out of the waistband of his jeans. Kami's own eyes widened when Lucifer suddenly popped out of nowhere and approached the man, calling him Ray. Kami looked for her sister, and soon found her creeping up to the second floor of the building, obviously having a plan in place. But would it be too late to save Lucifer?
"You had big plans to go on a vengeance quest until we came nipping at your heels, at which point poor Leila took the fall. An innocent!" Lucifer exclaimed, as Ray kept his gun on Lucifer.
"No, you're wrong" Ray shook his head.
"And then what, you'd stop? Get away scot-free? We both know you can't stop because you love it! Just like the people you punished" Lucifer explained, as Ray's face contorted in rage.
"I don't! I...I do. I-I like seeing them beg for forgiveness. Just like I'll enjoy watching you do the same!" Ray yelled, his finger itching to pull the trigger of his gun.
"Hey!" Kami cried, jumping out of where she had been hiding, as Ray whipped around to face her.
"The Detective was right…you really are trouble" Lucifer sighed.
"Guess I just can't help myself" Kami shrugged, as Ray took the safety off his gun.
"Who the hell are you?" Ray exclaimed, his hand shaking a little.
"Someone trying to stop you making a mistake, Ray. You don't know him. You don't know me. We don't deserve punishment, let alone to be punished by the likes of you" Kami told him, as the older man grit his teeth.
"We all deserve it! We're…we're sick! The whole fucking world! I'm just cleansing it of it's filth!" Ray shouted, becoming angrier in her presence.
"Then your part of the problem, Ray. If anyone deserves punishment…it's you" Kami insisted, as the man stiffened.
"N-no…I…I'm not a bad person…I'm just…I…I don't know…" Ray trailed off, his arm lowering, as his eyes went out of focus.
Kami took a step forward, her eyes on the weapon in Ray's hand, planning to grab it from his hand. Her eyes flickered to the lighter in his other hand, wondering if she could make it before they all went up in flames. He could kill them all in a heartbeat.
He was the one who deserved to die, she thought to herself.
"…You're right. I do deserve to die" Ray spat out, looking Kami square in his eyes.
Before Kami had time to react, Ray suddenly brought the barrel of the gun to his chin and pulled the trigger. She let out a gasp as blood sprayed over her face, the lighter falling to the ground as Ray's body went limp. A second later, white foam cascaded down from the ceiling, extinguishing the lighter flame before it could reach the gasoline. Ray's body fell to the ground with a thump, as blood pooled out from his wound, staining his shirt in a matter of seconds.
"Kami? Kami, are you alright?" Lucifer questioning, rushing over to her, taking a hold of her arms.
"I didn't mean…I didn't think he would…" Kami panted, beginning to shake.
"It's not your fault. He made his choice. It's not you" Lucifer insisted, rubbing away some of the blood on her cheek with the back of his hand.
Kami shook her head, feeling her eyes beginning to well with tears, causing Lucifer's chest to tighten. He quickly reached out to pull her into his arms, his hands rubbing soothing circles against her back. Kami gripped at his white shirt with her fingers, sniffling softly as she shut her eyes and let herself melt against him. When Lucifer held her, it felt like nothing could hurt her. Everything just faded away. Lucifer pressed a soft kiss to the top of her head, as his eyes flickered up to see the Detective walking towards them, her head tilted as she spotted their embrace. There was a question on her lips, but she seemed to think better of it after a moment, which Lucifer was thankful for.
"Maze, I'm not sure I'm really in the mood for a girl's night" Kami admitted, taking a sip of her beer.
"Well, too bad. Linda is already on her way and your sister won't be far behind" Maze pointed out.
"You invited my sister?" Kami frowned.
"I…may have googled how to be a good girlfriend again. It said I'm supposed to…bond with your siblings" Maze grimaced, as Kami had to bite her lip to stop herself from laughing.
"Ooo, maybe you can make friendship bracelets next time" Kami teased, as Maze made a gagging noise.
"Oh my god, I love the sound of that!" An excited voice exclaimed from behind the pair, as they twisted around in their chairs, finding Ella standing there with a beaming smile.
"What are you doing here?" Kami questioned.
"Lucifer's always talking about his club, I wanted to see what the big deal was. This place is amazing, right?" Ella suggested.
"Who the hell is she?" Maze inquired, her eyes narrowed and the smallest hint of jealousy in her voice.
"Oh, sorry! Hi, I'm Ella" She replied, leaping forward to pull Maze into a hug, who instantly stiffened.
Kami had to hide behind her drink to cover the laughter leaving her lips, seeing how Maze was having to use every bit of restraint she had not to throw the small woman across the room. Ella seemed not to notice this, only hugging the other woman tighter.
"This is Maze. She's not a hugger…or a talker, to be honest" Kami stated, as Ella pulled away.
"Wait, the Maze? As in your scorching hot girlfriend?" Ella gasped, watching Kami nod.
"Kami talks about you all the time!" Ella exclaimed, as Maze quirked an amused eyebrow.
"I mean, not all the time…" Kami trailed off, blushing lightly.
"And I can see why! I mean you are…wow. Just wow" Ella added, with wide eyes.
"Thanks" Maze smirked, smugly.
"Oh, look! There's Lucifer…looking like he's about to get lucky" Ella grinned, spotting the club owner not far away.
Kami followed her gaze, finding Lucifer walking towards them, two attractive brunettes on either arm. They were both giggling lightly, running their hands over his chest, clearly with one thing on their mind. Kami's jaw tightened at the sight, as she tore her gaze away and downed a whiskey shot on the counter.
"I'll be back in a minute" Kami announced, pushing herself off her stool and strolling towards the older man.
"Huh" Ella mumbled, as she watched Kami come to a halt in front of Lucifer.
"What?" Maze questioned, dryly.
"Those girls look a bit like Kami, don't you think? Hell, they could be sisters…" Ella trailed off, when she saw the expression on Maze's face.
Ella flinched when the beer bottle in Maze's hand suddenly shattered under the strength of her grip, her eyes never leaving Lucifer's form. Ella decided it would be smart to keep her mouth shut until Kami came back.
"Hey" Kami exclaimed, after Lucifer had simply stopped in front of her, opening and closing his mouth a few times.
"…You look…" Lucifer trailed off, his eyes raking over Kami's form.
It was only then she realised he was taken aback by her appearance, as she never usually dressed up so much. Or wore Maze's clothes. The leather dress was skin-tight, and left little to the imagination, the hemline finishing high up her thighs. She had even allowed Maze to do her makeup, giving her a smoky eye that caused her blue eyes to stand out more than usual. It was a good look…albeit a little different than what people would be used to.
"…Nice" Lucifer choked out, a few seconds later.
"Nice?" Kami repeated, as Lucifer gulped before nodding.
"Uh, do you have a minute?" Kami asked, her eyes flickering between the brunette's on hip.
"I was actually just about to show these ladies the original stairway to heaven—" Lucifer informed her, watching Kami purse his lips.
"Right. Well, I just wanted to go through the results of your last STD test. And no, it can't wait" Kami smirked, as the two brunette's jumped away from Lucifer immediately.
"Ladies, she's joking!" Lucifer insisted, as Kami shrugged.
"Genital herpes is no joking matter, Lucifer" Kami retorted, having to hide her smile as the two women were quick to back away.
"Are you happy now?" Lucifer huffed.
"Very" Kami grinned, clearly amused.
"Jealous, perhaps?" Lucifer pushed, as Kami let out a scoff.
"Please, I'm not the jealous one. You…you're the jealous one" Kami stuttered over her words, making Lucifer grin.
"And why's that?" Lucifer asked.
"…Because I'm going out on a girl's night, and you don't have anyone to invite on a boy's night" Kami shrugged.
"I have plenty of people—" Lucifer began, but she cut him off.
"Not guys you want to have sex with. Just friends" Kami responded, as Lucifer's mouth hung agape for a few moments.
"I have lots of friends! There's…Hyun, at the front desk of the station…" Lucifer trailed off.
"Hyun? The guy who burps in every sentence?" Kami clarified.
"He's actually very intelligent once you get to know him" Lucifer muttered.
"Okay, who else?" Kami pushed, crossing her arms.
"Tony" Lucifer replied, as Kami gave him an incredulous look.
"Tony, the janitor?" Kami asked, as Lucifer tutted her.
"Who also happens to be hilarious" Lucifer insisted.
"And?" Kami went on.
"…Detective Douche" Lucifer muttered, after a few seconds, making Kami laugh.
"You hate Dan!" She pointed out.
"Well, I like him more than you!" Lucifer responded, childishly.
"Yeah, well…right back at you!" Kami exclaimed, as they stared at each other for a few moments.
All of a sudden the pair burst out laughing, realising just how ridiculous they sounded. Kami ran a hand through her hair, as an idea came to mind.
"I was actually coming over to say thanks for the over day. Guess I could use some work on my thank you's" Kami laughed.
"They're certainly unique" Lucifer chuckled, almost shyly.
"I've decided I'm staying out of police business for a bit. Doesn't exactly seem to end well when I'm involved" Kami stated, as Lucifer's eyes softened.
"You know that man's death had nothing to do with you, right?" Lucifer pushed, as Kami gave a small shrug.
"Maybe not but…I think my sister's right. I keep raring ahead into these situations, not thinking about the consequences…" Kami trailed off, with a frown.
"Sounds like my life motto" Lucifer pointed out, making her giggle.
"…You want to make a deal?" Kami questioned, quickly changing the subject.
"I'm listening" Lucifer said, with barely concealed excitement.
"You go out with your new besties, and actually have a good time…and I'll…get my sister and Maze to get along for the night" Kami suggested, as Lucifer held out his hand.
"Deal" Lucifer exclaimed, as they shook hands.
"Any chance you want to seal the deal with a kiss?" Lucifer suggested, cheekily.
"In your dreams, Luce" Kami laughed, before turning back towards Maze, who had been watching the interaction intensely.
"What was that about?" Maze frowned, as Kami approached.
"Just making a deal with the Devil" Kami grinned to herself.
