Author's Note:-
Hello, my faithful readers! As you can see I have come with another update. I will try to keep it weekly, and make it interesting to you guys as well.
Please leave reviews, it really helps me whether I have places to improve and it also keeps me motivated.
This chapter is most of exposition dump so if you are bored please tell.
Without further ado let's begin with this chapter.
Qrow looked at the old man in front of him, and then looked at his surroundings. Confused at what just happened he asks, "What happened?", he looks at the old man and asks, "Did you do something?"
With a straight and serious face, the old man explains, "No, it was one of your powers. As a Hellspawn, you have a multitude of powers. While I was sure that you would use them in an offensive way first, seeing the teleportation really surprised me." Suddenly a bright light starts appearing, removing the darkness of the night away. The old man and the Spawn look at the light and notice that the sun started rising. The old man then looks at the Spawn and says, "The morning has arrived", Qrow looks at him, "Let's get somewhere first", he then walks towards the confused Hellspawn and grabs him by the shoulder, "preferably somewhere isolated". Then from the shadows that were dwindling under the rising sun, they vanished.
"RUBY ROSE! Explain yourself!?", a woman with a black dress and white hood spoke. She has shoulder-length black hair with rose-brown tips, but the most striking feature was her silver eyes. Eyes just like her daughter, Ruby Rose. This was Summer Rose, a former/retired huntress. Right now she was currently angry at her daughter, who was innocently munching over her favorite cereals. Taiyang, a muscular blonde man, who is her husband, and Yang, a blonde girl who is her step-daughter, looked at her with an 'uh oh' expression. The two looked at the other two, fearing what Summer was going to do. Summer continued, "All I did was just sleep early last night and when I wake up I hear you took on Roman Torchwick alone, not only him but his goons too, and let's not forget about Ozpin offering you an admission to straight to Beacon which can make you skip 2 years of study!", Summer stopped her rant and started taking some deep breaths. Her children, both Ruby and Yang were troublemakers in their younger years, but now as they are older. They are more than just trouble makers. After taking enough deep breaths she finally decided, "You are not allowed to go outside just like Yang till I say you are good to go. And just because Ozpin offered you a seat at Beacon doesn't mean you are going"
Nearly choking on her cereal Ruby shouted, "What!?", not believing what she just heard, "but... but..."
"No buts", Summer countered, "I will take my time and think if this is best for you or not. Am I clear?"
Ruby gulps, "Yes mom", she finishes her cereal and goes to her room. Summer then sits on a chair and lumps over the table. With her hand holding and massaging her forehead, she releases a deep breath of a sigh. Taiyang goes over to Summer while Yang goes over to her sister. He takes a seat near Summer puts an arm around her shoulder to comfort her.
Summer says, "I, I can't", she wants to continue but she is tired to say anything
"Well she is your daughter", Taiyang said, "after all, you went to Beacon with the same goal as her"
"But at least I went when it was my age", Summer countered, "you of all people should realize why Ozpin took Ruby in"
"That, I know", Taiyang agreed on that one. After all, it wasn't just Ruby's talent that got her in. It was her eyes. Her silver eyes.
"Then you should also know what weapon she wields", Taiyang's eyes widen at that, and look at Summer. Summer continues, "she reminds me too much of him, Tai". He sees tears coming out of her eyes, "I can't see it again. I just can't"
Taiyang holds her tight. Ever since Qrow died Summer had to go to a therapist, Raven who was already adamant about not coming back distanced herself away, even more, she neither checked up with her own daughter nor her former teammates for over 15 years. It left Tai to cheer up Summer, which led to another thing, and then Ruby happened. It all went fine for many years. Until Ruby started learning about her mother's old career as a Huntress and dedicated herself to becoming one. It was already hard for Summer to not go hyper at Ruby's choice due to her fear, and her choice in weaponry made it even harder. Once Ruby learned, heard, and watched every weapon and technique Team STRQ did in their days, she decided to build one weapon that nearly gave Summer a heart attack. Crescent Rose, a sniper-scythe combo weapon. Taiyang wasn't taking this any good either. The only positive point that he could think of is that 'at least it isn't exactly like Harbinger'. But still, seeing Ruby mimicking Qrow's moves was hard for Summer to watch. After all, it isn't easy for an emotional wound to heal. Some stay forever after all. How Ruby turned out like this, is a question they both thought about it for days.
Qrow was horrified and nearly threw up when he saw the environment of the place he stood at for a split second. Apparently, to teleport between shadows Qrow has to come to this place for a moment and then get out of there. It will take a lot of time before he could do it comfortably. But besides that, the place where he appeared was a warehouse. An empty one at that. It had nothing, just proper lights to not let it fall in complete darkness. The man stood in front of him and looked back at Spawn. He started, "You were looking for me right? Here I am. What is it that you want to ask me?"
Without wasting any time, Qrow asks, "You know all about this. So tell me this first, what the hell did I see in my grave!?"
The old man replies, "The body you saw in that coffin was your old body. Once you die your soul gets sent to either heaven or hell. Once you become a Hellspawn you are given a new body."
Agreeing on it, somewhat, he continues, "This suit?"
"It's sentient. Call it a costume, uniform, or a demon, it's up to you. But it is a symbiotic being that latches onto you."
"The green liquid?"
"That green liquid is called Necroplasm. You see unlike your original body which was made of flesh and bones, this one is made of Necroplasm. Think of it as a demon's flesh and blood. Every being from hell is made of it. Except for the suit, it feeds on you"
Qrow backs up and shouts, "What do you mean it feeds on me!?"
"The suit is symbiotic. It feeds on the Necroplasm of your body. In exchange, it gives you enough strength and power to match others", Qrow looks at him with an unchanged horrified expression, "Don't try to take it off. Without it, you won't be able to even walk properly", Qrow, despite not having any consolation from the explanation, calmed down, "Though you should be careful with how many hits you take and how much use your powers. A Spawn can only have limited Necroplasm and cannot replenish it unless proper training"
"What happens when it's finished?"
"You will be dragged back to hell and will never see the human world until the apocalypse begin"
"Great. Even in death my Semblance didn't leave me", Qrow said sarcastically. His Semblance was the worst anyone could think of. All it did was just give him and the people around him a heavy dose of Bad Luck. This resulted in many going wrong in missions and barely making it out alive. The worst part? He didn't have any control over it. It worked on its own.
"It's a stupid concept if you ask me", the old man said, "Soul protecting the body? It's preposterous! It's a direct invitation to the demons to become a meal!"
Qrow looks at him flabbergasted, "Meal!?"
The old man continues, "The concept of Aura is to protect one's body by using the soul. When it comes to creatures of heaven and hell it becomes a liability. Their entire weapons are built around destroying the souls or harvesting them. You break their Aura using a weapon from those worlds and they are good as dead"
Qrow looks at him with an unreadable expression. The mask did a very good job at it, "My Aura..."
"It's locked because of this very reason", the old man warned him, "Unlock it and you become the most vulnerable Hellspawn of all time"
The talk continued for a while. The old man explained how this all worked, how hell and heaven worked. Qrow on his part was surprised beyond his initial thoughts. There was a similar concept of heaven and hell here, but it was tied to the 'Two Brothers' who were said to be the creator of humanity. Not this Satan and God. It soon lead to Qrow having information overload, which made him take a seat, sit over it, and process all of it. Lastly, Qrow asked an important question, "How come we never knew of this?"
The old man answered, "As I said before. We are part of a whisper"
Qrow got up and walked towards the old man, "Yeah... well guess what? I knew of many whispers in this world. But I never heard of yours. Oz would have told us"
The old man gets a surprised expression on his face. He turns it back into a serious one and asks, "So you know about those two then", out of all the things, he didn't expect this Spawn to be aware of this.
"Yeah. I know all that. I know how The Brothers existed and how this war goes between those two", he then looks at the old man in a threatening way, "Then how come we never heard of you and any of this shit!?"
The old man stays silent. Thinking of what to say. He says, "It's because the connection that was once between this world, and heaven and hell was severed by a barrier created by those Brothers. They made sure that in the war between them your world would not get into a crossfire. Their barrier acted as a means to separate the worlds. But since they left this world long ago, Remnant as you call it, has its barriers weakened from erosion through time. Your arrival only means that the barrier is breaking, and soon Remnant will be bought back to become a part of their battlefield", the old man took a deep breath, "I was left behind as the barrier was erected. Leaving me in this world"
Qrow felt some sympathy towards the old man. He asked, "So... you are an angel or a demon?"
"A demon", the old man answered truthfully.
Qrow remarks, "You don't look like one?"
"Benefits of having demonic powers", the old man answers as his face suddenly changes and becomes horrifying to look at. After Qrow taking a good look at it, the old man's face changes its appearance to look like a human, "but all I want is a way to go back home. The main reason why you never hear of us is that if those last two wizards ever hear that a single creature from heaven or hell lived, they will forget all their fighting and set their goals to eradicate us. It happened a lot in the past once the Brothers left. They made sure not even a 'fairy tale' existed showing them"
The silence came again and filled the nearly empty room. The two creatures from hell, one who was born there and the other who was created with a human soul, looked at each other, with the latter giving a sympathetic look over him. The old man then walked away from Qrow and went towards a shadow within the warehouse. Looking back at the Spawn he warned him, "I am not the only one from hell who survived all this time. There are others. Some from hell while some from heaven. Beware, not every individual you meet is as friendly as I, and even with the times and circumstances against us, they will not hesitate to kill you at the first sight. Your arrival has already warned many that the barrier is breaking, they will want to have a piece of you. And lastly, do not go to any of those wizards. Not only will they kill you if you see them, but also because if you go anywhere near them, others will notice it and will do anything to drag you before they notice you."
"Where are you going!?", Qrow exclaimed as he understood what the old man was going to do. But without any reply, the old man vanished into the shadow and left Qrow alone in the warehouse. He only held one thought in his brain, "Shit! I forgot to ask his name!", no one can blame him though, he was still in information overload after all.
Qrow went back to sitting at the corner of the warehouse and processed all he heard. It was weird. In his human life, he was a bandit and tried to learn Huntsman's ways to not only protect his tribe but also to kill Huntsman to steal better loot. Then Ozpin came and opened his eyes to the bigger world and battle, Salem, the queen behind the Grimm, magic, which was real and he could become a literal crow (no pun over his name intended) when he wanted to, and lastly the two Brothers. Now, he is back from the dead and now his eyes have opened to a bigger war. A war between worlds where Remnant was nothing more than a place that can get stuck in a crossfire of all things. Qrow needed help in this. Even though that old man did come when he wanted to, it came with the cost of Qrow getting a beatdown, but the second he spoke everything, he left without telling Qrow any means of communicating him. Qrow was pissed at this. He stood up and circled around the warehouse. He needed to know more, and not just more about heaven and hell, but more about his powers. The old man mentioned it that teleportation isn't the only power he had. He had more. He needed to learn it. He looked at his red gloved hands and wondered what else he could do. He thought of channelling energy over it, and just like that as if he were a natural at it, toxic green light came over his hands. It's flame like appearance felt mesmerizing to him. Lifting his head and looked around him he focused on a wall and aimed his hand towards it. Using as little power as he could imagine he sent a blast over that wall. A green bolt of energy collided with the wall infront of him and destroyed a hefty portion of that wall. Seeing that happening with little amount of power, Qrow went to work and started experimenting on it. He had much much to learn.
Author's Note:-
As you can see now, Remnant has had a history with heaven and hell and has many demons and angels trapped in it. And you can also see Qrow has started to train with his powers. To be honest I would have easily left Qrow to handle his powers by himself as many Spawns in the comics have done, but since this is a fanfic and I am the author, so I can do whatever the hell I want. But he won't be learning all of it just with this small montage. It will take a while to learn everything he can.
Plus, it would have been troublesome for me to write it in such a manner where Qrow has to learn the ropes by himself without any support. Especially how the setting is placed.
At least he has this old man for the support.
