The Arrowverse is one of the series I really struggle to write for. I think this story is an amazing place to start to master that...
I dedicate this chapter to a freind of mine, a constant reader... Wiccan-Demiurge. They are an awesome kid and their reviews always make my day.
Devlin hated the Glades, who didn't, and he wanted nothing more than to leave it forever... issue was, that took money and means he just lacked. It didn't matter that he had graduated at thirteen and was smart as a whip. It didn't matter that he wanted to become a nurse and help people. It didn't matter that he had been paying bribes since he was seven to avoid beat downs and the overall violence of the Glades. It didn't matter that he had six scars when he couldn't pay those bribes. It didn't matter that he had lost his parents to abandonment by the time he was ten. It didn't matter that he was miserable and hateful and kind and warm all at once... none of it mattered. The world was unfair and he was it's bitch.
His only solace was the library, where he spent countless hours studying and readying himself for college and a life outside of Starling City. He found peace among the books, among the countless shelves of fantasies. He felt at peace there, at home...something he didn't feel anywhere else.
So maybe it was that peace that led him to something that would change everything...
It was getting close to closing, he would have to leave for home and that was just a miserable thought... he decided to go through the shelves one last time, curious if he could find another fantasy book to read, anything to escape his dry life. He let his fingers drag along the spines of various books, making a list of the various titles offered.
"Read that one... hate that... love this... boring... Ow." Something, static probably, zapped his fingers. Sucking on his fingers, which stung like a bitch, he kneeled down and looked at the title, or rather the lack of one. Curious, he grabbed the book and opened it. "The Mystic Arts for those in need... huh... why not, I've ready basically everything else."
Within twenty minutes he had the book checked out and he walked to his crappy apartment. Settling onto his couch, which also served as his bed, he opened the book and started to read.
A force that goes beyond good or evil, magic is the pure manipulation of primordial energies. It cannot be mastered through just learning, one must experience and connect with mystical energies on a physical and spiritual level. For one learning it without the innate spark, this book can act as a talisman, allowing for focus until you gain the sensitivity to mold primordial energies.
Magic, for humans, starts out as a matter of will and verbal confirmation. To begin mastery of the craft, you must first channel it through your voice and your will. Focus with all your might on that spark you first felt when you touched this book. It was the might of your desire to possess the means to change your future that first allowed you to come into contact with this book, Devlin Schmidt.
Cold terror washed through Devlin at that last part. " How... how does it know my name, there is no way this could be a prank... is magic real?" Shaking, he continued reading.
I know this must be terrifying, but magic is a rare and dying art. So few practice it anymore, it is vilified despite its vast potential. This book was spelled and placed in the Glades Library for anyone with the potential to master magic and stop it's death if only slightly. It is designed to find those that need it's power, it's knowledge... you must be that kind of person if you have found this book.
You have a choice though, magic is all about choice. If you choose to not learn magic, close the book and it will vanish entirely. The memories will fade and you will return to the life you have chosen to lead. Or you can choose to continue on, add a drop of your blood to the book and bind yourself to it. It will allow you to harness this book's magic until you gain the means to do so on your own. It will allow you to read the magic in this tome, which is vast but only really tapping into the basics. It will give you the means to get you started...
So what say you... will you bind yourself to this tome and learn the craft, or will you allow fear to rob you of the chance to become truly great?
The choice was easy for Devlin. Pulling out his pocket knife, he poked his finger and allowed a drop to fall onto the page. He felt a rush of strength, of warmth and cold, the moment the blood hit the page. The world spun for a moment and he felt a magnetic pull connect him forever to the tome before him.
You made the right choice. We will begin immediately. Before you sleep you will have access to the most basic aspects of magic. Spellwork, Telekneiss, and sensing mystical forces. It is actually very simple now that you have access to a talisman, the power of this tome, imbued with magic and knowledge, will act as a conduit for you. By the months end you should be able to do quite a bit without my assistance. However, know this, you are a novice and this book can only channel so much power. It is made for beginners and that means you must be careful to never overplay your hand...
Your safety matters if you are to pass on this knowledge.
Be careful...
Now, to begin... we are going to cast a simple protection spell over your home. It only requires a few drops of your blood, a bowl of water and a spell... oh and a paint brush. You will be painting sigils around your home and casting a spell to create a binding field over your home. This will keep it safe from those that wish you harm. I saw that you were in danger, it was part of what drew me to you...
Lets get started!
Chapter end, tell me what you think in the reviews.
This was a blast to write but very hard.
Love, your Ninja Overlord,
Mika.
