As Hawks watched his sister's breath slowly escape from her lips, he couldn't help but smile to himself from the doorway. The man had just checked in to see if she was doing alright but just seeing her alive was something Hawks could hardly believe.
Everything still felt like some kind of fever dream, that he would wake up in the morning and find that he had imagined everything. He couldn't even really sleep with the fear that when he opened his eyes the world would continue to be cruel, that it would take her away again.
Closing the door behind him, Hawks then walked towards the window before lifting his wings up and placing his signature yellow glasses across his eyes. Sweet dreams Hikari. I'll be back before you even know I'm gone..
Then the hero took off into the sky before finding himself in front of the public hero safety commission a moment later, his eyes traveling up the tall building silently. Man did he wish he could have stayed in that apparent all day but sadly that's not what he was allowed.
No, whether he liked it or not there was still work that needed to be done.
Sighing to himself, Hawks immediately slapped on his happy go lucky persona before stepping into the building, giving finger guns to whoever was passing by. God, this was exhausting.
True be told, he hated the act. He hated forcing himself into a character the commission had built but a long time ago. But they told him that the world would despise who he used to be, that the stupid little child he once was wasn't enough. So he changed.
A hero was supposed to be strong, a hero was never supposed to break. They were indestructible. That's what the world wanted to see, that's what he was conditioned to be for years after all.
So he believed it with every fiber of his being. In every action, every conversation he knew that Hawks had to be in every single decision he made. Because otherwise, he was useless. Keigo was useless.
And that was partly why he was afraid when Hikari was curious about him last night.
Perhaps it was because somewhere inside, the man knew that she'd be disappointed by his actions, by his sins and mistakes that were always slapped in front of his face.
He loved his sister but it was better to keep her at a distance, for her to only see the very best parts of her brother, the ones she had admired for so many years.
The last thing he feared was for her to get corrupted as he was, with a lost look in her eyes that could never return. No, his sister had to be safe in that little bubble that he protected her in, she had to be okay.
And perhaps it would have been better if she lived somewhere else but Hawks also knew he was too stubborn to ever let her go again. He would protect her, he had to after failing to save her so many times.
As he approached the president's office, Hawks heard a conversation on the other side, opening the door slightly as the president and a male agent turned in his direction. "Oops, sorry I didn't know you all were talking. I'll just wait outside and…"
Although the woman only sighed before sliding a file over to the agent with a huff. "It's alright Hawks, stay. We were just finishing up here. Shadow, finish your report.."
At the order, Hawks felt his feathers twitch before remaining still as a good dog would do, now hearing the other end of the conversation with perked ears.
"Right, so as I was saying. We think a high profile villain has entered our area. They have a large following in the underground and have assisted in various cases across the board. I believe they go by a client bases with no real target in mind…"
Shoving his hands in the pocket the agent then pointed to the file on the table. "But the strange thing is, there have been hundreds of clients although none of them claim to see the ring leaders face. The only thing I've gotten is they go by the alias "Valkyrie" and that they are extremely dangerous and feared across many gangs. That's all."
Hawks couldn't help but take in the information with interest. He had never heard of this Valkyrie person before but they did seem pretty dangerous. Although it wasn't really anything too special, just standard villain behavior. They kind of sounded like his dad and his past crimes actually.
Perhaps that's why the man felt a slight chill up his spine at the description, picturing his father force Hikari and him into these kinds of jobs all the time. He hoped whoever this person was, they would be caught quickly.
The president seemed to soak up the information before staring at the agent with narrowed eyes. "And you think this villain should move up on our profile list, is that it? If I do that, what actions are you going to take towards the case?"
Bowing in response, the agent replied. "I'm going to follow up on their other victims. Lucky for us, Valkyrie has never displayed the interest to kill, only to exploit, with severe beatings. Someone has to have seen their face."
The woman seemed satisfied enough with that, pushing the file closer to the man before snapping. "Then do it. That is all."
Nodding, the agent bowed once more before making his way out of the office, glancing at Hawks and giving him a nod as he went.
Sure, the case was interesting but that wasn't what he had come for.
Almost immediately, the president's ice cold voice cut through the space, making the bird flitch internally. "I expect you have some good news for me Hawks."
Feeling his defenses kick in, the bird threw up a sly smile in order to hide his own anxiety. "Ah, it's great to see ya too prez. How have you been? It's been a couple weeks, right?"
Although it seemed it was obvious that he didn't indeed have "good news", causing the woman to hiss back. "Hawks, now is not the time for idle chat. The fate of the hero world is in your hands so I expect you to tell me something positive. Unless you've been dragging your feet again.."
Widening his eyes, Hawks changed tactics quickly, the fear of getting kicked off this case and shunned in the forefront of his mind. "Ah well you see, Dabi's a hard nut to crack. I've been trying for months but he still won't trust me. He only gives me tasks to complete in order to get that trust but it seems nothing changes."
He was quickly cut off as the president slammed her hands on the table, causing Hawks to externally flitch this time. "He's playing you and you are falling for it like the idiot you are. Don't let him control the situation. That's not what I taught you Little Keigo.."
At the sound of his old name, the man felt a wave of manufactured shame build up into his throat before replying back softly. "No, but you have to know it's not that easy…"
Yet the president still wasn't pleased still. "Easy? I don't care if it's easy or not. I put you on this case because I thought you could handle it. The orders were to find out the league of villain and their plans in order to take them down from the inside, did you forget that as well?"
Recalling the mission at hand, Hawks replied. "No, I haven't but.."
Although only again he was cut off, the bird shutting his mouth as soon as the president's cruel voice returned.
"But nothing. I asked you to complete an order so you better start showing some progress or I will kick you off of this case and find someone far more capable instead. You do want to be a capable hero don't you?'
Nodding his response, the bird felt his fears twitch before recalling all of the training and reasons that he became a hero for in the first place. He needed to pull himself together, before everyone around him suffered, before his sister suffered. "I do."
Yet the woman only turned down her head before spitting back with venom that was all too familiar for the man.
"Really? Cause all I see right now is the son of a murderer that is playing dress up in order to be a hero. Is that what you are Little Keigo? Are you just your sorry excuse like your father or are you something more than that?"
And once she had mentioned his father, flashes of unpleasant memories and actions crept into his mind before the bird immediately shut his eyes at them.
No, no he wasn't his father. He wasn't that terrible horrible man. He was better, he was a hero. He wanted to be a hero..
Seeing his wings raise out in growing anger and anxiety, Hawks lost his composure, now speaking out with a far louder tone, the broken part of him extremely evident. "I am. I am not that man, I will never be. I am not useless, I will get Dabi to trust me, whatever it takes.."
The president then looked at his unhinged words before finally humming back in satisfaction, her hands clasped under her chin. "I sure hope so. Don't disappoint me again Hawks, unless you want to find yourself out of a job."
Thinking about something in particular, the woman then smiled lightly, a cruel gleam to her eyes. "Or perhaps you need some more training. In that dark little room with your eyes blindfolded, being beaten until you finally become useful. Do you want Little Keigo? Or do you want to follow orders?"
A sharp shiver appeared across his spine at the mention of his past training, the pricks of the intensive years still lingering in the back of his mind, the ones that erased Keigo. "No, that won't be necessary. I can do it. I won't disappoint you anymore president."
Knowing that her words had gotten under his skin, the woman then leaned back into her chair before finally looking away from the scared little bird. "Very well. I will be awaiting your next update then. We are done here."
Hawks knew that sign anywhere, not wanting to displease her again before bowing once and turning towards the door, his mind still in chaos from the past conversation.
He needed to be better, he needed to stop being such a coward. Take more risks, get more answers. That's what a hero did. He needed to stop being Little Keigo and be the person that the world actually wanted.
Lowering his eyes in shame, the bird then opened the door before hearing the president call back on him plainly. "Oh and Keigo, that broken look in your eyes is unbecoming. Fix it before you leave."
That caused the bird to immediately stop, the hero letting out a shaky breath before slapping his Hawks persona backup in order to hide his inner turmoil, the ones she caused.
Then he did exactly as told, curving his lips into a fake smirk before glancing back at the president in order to show the side she wanted him to display.. "See ya prez."
As she felt fingers touch her wings, Hikari slapped them away before turning around only to find more hands pushing her down onto the ground as various strangers stood over her, cruel and sickening smiles to their faces.
Their hands traveled across her body as the girl closed her eyes in agony, wanting to scream but not finding the words before they began to forcibly dig their hands into her wings, ripping a handful of feathers out, one by one.
It was tortuous, the agony, shame and pain mixing together as hot heats blurred inside of her vision. She wished for someone to save her, for anyone to hear her cries and get these strangers away from her.
Just then, a metal chain appeared around her neck, the girl suffocating as more laughing and excruciating pain filled her mind, the girl's fingers clawing at the chain in order to break free with no avail. Kei-chan! Please...please someone...help…
Hearing small footsteps creep closer, Hikari closed her eyes and let out a whimper before the stranger crouched over her, his voice so sickenly familiar that he made the girl want to throw up. "Well well well, what do we have here?"
She looked up immediately before laying eyes on her brother, his hero costume fully visible in the dark alleyway as Hikari finally found her voice, a breath of relief in her tone. "K-Keigo…"
At the same time, one of the strangers from above her called back to her brother lazily. "You know her Hawks? She says she's your sister."
Widening her eyes, Hikari raced forward, forgetting about the chain around her neck as the metal dug into her skin, the girl reaching her arms out towards the boy that was just a couple feet away from her. "Kei...Kei it's me...please...please help me…"
Although her hopes were soon dashed when the person that looked so much like her brother only smirked before lifting her chin with a cruel glint in his eyes, the same one as those strangers who were tearing her wings wore a couple minutes ago.
"Sister? Hmm nope I don't have any family. Carry on."
A horrible wave of devastation crashed into her before the hands started to circle her wings again, Hikari screaming back as her hands reached out into the open air. "N-No, no no please. D-Don't touch me, please please stop it..! Kei-chan...Kei-chan please tell them...tell them to stop..!"
As red feathers dropped in front of her, Hikari began to scream, the feeling of the strangers ripping her wings apart as Hawks watched in gleeful joy, almost like he was one of them.
That's right, he was one of them.
Gasping awake, Hikari immediately felt her breath shorten, the girl's own sweat dripping into her eyes as she whipped it a second later.
Her entire body was shaking, Hikari looking up at the ceiling as the adrenaline started to dissipate painfully slowly, not fast enough though.
Almost immediately, her hands traveled to her back and then to the crystal pendent on her neck before letting out a breath of anxiety. Stupid nightmares, she thought she had gotten over them.
Just then, the feeling of hands on her body caused the girl to immediately sit up, already racing towards the bathroom so she wasn't lying down anymore and slamming the door next to her.
Gripping the sink with a shaky breath, Hikari then splashed a handful of water on her face before finally calming down, the girl sighing heavily at the attack. It must be because of that conversation last night. Stupid Kei, you see what you did?
Hikari then started back at the mirror before recalling the horrible nightmare. Well, it was more of a memory then a nightmare but it still scared everything out of her. The only thing that was different was a few details although she could still feel her back twitch in a shiver at the very idea of that horrible night.
Fuck, she thought the panic attacks had gone down. That's just great.
Already this mission was messing with her head and Hikari didn't know how long she could take this if her brother was going to keep bringing up things she'd like to forget. She'd have to watch out for that.
And speaking of the devil, Hawks' voice echoed back a moment later, his insanely chipper attitude causing the girl to roll her eyes already. "Hika-chan, I'm so glad you're up! Come out so I can give you a little surprise!"
Taking in a breath of courage, Hikari then took one last look in the mirror before slapping up her fragile personality and meeting the bird in the living room. "Is everything okay Kei-chan?"
Immediately turning around, Hawks beamed before running up to her, the girl taking a step backwards as he did so because of that terrible nightmare. "Of course it is! I get to come home to my cute little sister after all! Come on, I have something to show you.."
His over the top personality immediately caused Hikari to cringe as her brother grabbed onto her hand, pushing her towards her bedroom happily. Is it just me or does he seem extra idiotic today?
Once they reached the room, Hawks' winged flapped in excitement before placing his hand in the doorknob. "I know this is a long time coming but after our talk last night you got me thinking about something and well, I may have gone a little overboard…"
Not fully understanding, the girl threw up a small smile, batting her eyelashes to seem cute and more innocent than usual. "What do you mean?"
Then the bird beamed before throwing open the door, the contents inside causing Hikari's mouth to drop open in surprise, and it wasn't a good one..
Because standing in front of her was her closet, now filled with the fluffiest, pinkest and girliest clothes Hikari could ever think off. It was like a pastel cloud threw up in her room, that's how bad it was.
Being frozen in disbelief, Hikari immediately began to think of a hundred different ways to murder her brother, just the color alone bringing a sense of nausea to her lips.
She hated pink, and not only that, she hated literally everything this closet represented. The girl would have rather died then be seen in anything like this and it seemed like the clothes didn't stop. There were so many of them.
Taking a step closer in order to calm her disgust and anger, Hikari touched one of the outfits as Hawks beamed behind her, misreading her movements as amazement. "Sooo, am I good or am I good?"
The girl touched the light pink fabric between her hands, little fluffy white hearts on the skirt before Hikari had to close her eyes in order to not lose her cool. It's for the mission, It's for the mission, just be calm, don't break your character, just stay calm...
Then the girl turned around to face her brother before giving him the best impression she could, Hikari already feeling her teeth grit together as it physically pained her to say the words.
"I love it Kei-chan. You really shouldn't have."
Completely disregarding the hidden intent in her words, Hawks only ran up to the pink hell before pulling out a sweater with light blue clouds on them. "Aww don't be so modest sis, you deserve it! I know you wanted these things when we were kids so now that I can get em for you, you can have all the princess dresses you want!"
His words were supposed to be sweet but all Hikari could think about was how utterly misguided the actions were.
Kei, I used to like this stuff when I was seven. What the hell are you thinking?! If you think you are going to catch me wearing any of this crap then you are sorely mistaken.."
Of course that's not what she responded with though. "Aww that's so sweet. You really thought all of this out, didn't you? I'm honored."
Although it seemed like someone in the universe hated her because just as she thought that, Hawks pulled out the girliest strawberry dress with giant red hearts and ruffles before pushing the object at her. "Well, go ahead, try one on! I know you're dying too..!"
I'm dying, but in a different way then you think
Staring at the horrible dress, Hikari's smile dropped a fraction of a second before turning her head in question. "Oh, are you sure?"
And internally, the girl begged Hawks to say she didn't have to, to say that she was free from the torture she was about to endure.
Although once again, luck was not on her side as Hawks practically shoved the dress into her arms before using a feather to open the bathroom door and push her inside a moment later. "Don't be so modest! I wanna see how cute my little sister is..."
Then before she had a say, the door shut behind her, Hikari immediately throwing the demon dress on the floor before a list of curse words played in her mind towards the closed door.
It will be a simple mission he said, just go along with it he said. Fuckin Dabi, I swear the next time I see him he's gonna regret saying those two faced lies to me..
Yet she paused when Hawks spoke over her, his voice overly cheerful as his sister slammed her head against the wall with the groan. "How's it going in there? Are you too shocked to move, is it really that cute? Come on, don't hog it to yourself, I wanna see too!"
Knowing she didn't really have a choice, Hikari then regretfully started to undress before putting on the pink dress, hating her life as she did so in order to please her annoying and clueless brother.
Once she was done, the girl didn't even look at herself in the mirror for fear of throwing up before her small heeled steps made their way into the living room as Hawks gasped at the sight.
"Oh my goodness Hika-chan, you look just like a princess! I knew good looks ran in the family. You're so pretty!"
Although the only thing Hikari could think was the same mantra that kept her from cracking all together, her lips twisted into a plastic smile. It's for the mission, It's for the mission, just be calm, don't break your character, just stay calm...
Spinning in the circle around the girl, Hawks then spoke happily.. "So what do you think, how do you feel? Is it everything you dreamed it would be?"
And his words were laughable cause internally Hikari felt absolutely the most uncomfortable she had ever been. In fact if this was anyone other than her brother she knew they would've been sorry for even suggesting this stupid idea.
Giggling to herself, the girl still tried to stay calm though, a bit of a malice sneaking through with her word choice, knowing it wasn't enough to pick up on.
"Words can't describe how I'm feeling right now."
And Hawks only lifted his wings in excitement, seemingly satisfied with his choice before walking over to his sister gleefully. "Glad to hear! Now, we can't have you looking all cute for no reason. Let's go out, it's on me!"
Yet all Hikari could hear from those words was more terror. Fuck, no no I can't go out like this. What if someone recognizes me?! My reputation will be completely destroyed!
So much so, the girl pulled her arms around herself in order to act traumatized about something so that Kei would feel bad and cancel the plans. "B-But Kei, I'm scared..what if those people are still out there...I don't want to be hurt again.."
And that broke Hawks' heart sure, his eyes lowering with concern before placing a light hand to her arm and giving her the wrong response. "Aww Hika-chan. It will be okay. I'll be right next to you the whole time. I swear, I won't ever leave your side the entire time..."
Twisting her eyes in disbelief, Hikari couldn't help but curse to herself, knowing she had failed. That's not what I meant stupid. I don't want you breathing down my neck, I just don't want to be out looking like an idiot. In fact, I'd like you as far away from me as possible..
But after realizing she had already lost, Hikari closed her eyes in acceptance before removing her arms in order to stop her traumatized act for now. "Alright."
Although that was quickly wiped away when Hawks started to take her towards the balcony, his wings outstretched. "There ya go. Now come on, I'll fly us there and..."
And just as he said those words, Hikari's persona broke for a split second, fear taking up her features as she forcibly stopped her brother with her arm. "No!"
Stopping, Hawks then turned around to see her fragile expression before he watched her try to hide it a moment later. "I-I'm afraid of heights. Please, can we walk..?"
Hikari hated it but this was something she couldn't act about, this wasn't something she could just plainly cover up. Yeah, call it pathetic and weak but the girl just couldn't do what he had asked.
No, honestly she was terrified to fly, but it wasn't because of the heights..
Yet Hawks seemed to notice this, placing a gentle hand to her head before speaking with heavy concern. "Yeah no problem. You don't have to hide it. It's okay if ya don't wanna fly."
Then he quickly changed the subject before grabbing her hand and moving her towards the door instead. "I know what you need. A nice meal of chicken. Come on, let's go little sis.."
And for the first time in the day, was happy to follow him if it meant forgetting about her moment of weakness.
The one that she couldn't let anyone see.
Sitting at the small cafe, Hikari kept her eyes in a constant search for any familiar faces that would inevitably ruin her life if they saw her in this girly strawberry dress like she had feared. God, please just let me go home already..
Although Hawks seemed to notice her discomfort, looking in the direction she was staring before he lifted his wings up protectively. She seemed nervous about something, almost on edge.
"You okay Hika-chan?"
Snapping her eyes back to her brother, Hikari then placed a spoon into her tea before swirling it into a circle twice with anxiety. "Hmm? Sorry, I guess I'm just nervous."
Hawks assumed it was because of the comment she made before she left, wondering what kind of torment she had gone through while she was missing.
He looked into the report this morning and the only thing the police could get out of her was that they found her in an abandoned building calling for help.
She didn't have any major injuries besides a couple broken bones that were quickly healed while she was unconscious. They hypothesized that it was because she fell from somewhere but that's the only information he had.
And Hawks was dying to know what happened to the girl, noticing her small twitches, nervous energy and fragile demeanor in the last day with heavy concern. But he also didn't want to push her with the fear that she'd never open up to him like that.
No, he had to wait until she was ready. That was the smart thing to do. Until then, Hawks knew he would support her silently. She was so incredibly fragile right now and the last thing he wanted was for her to break entirely.
So much so, her brother only gave her a small smile before reassuring her the best she could. "I already told you Hikari, I'm right here to protect you. Don't worry."
He watched as Hikari stopped her hand from swirling her tea before looking down at the table with a moment of silence. Stupid Keigo. It's too late for that.
But the only thing he saw was a small head nod before replying lightly. "Thanks Kei."
And that was enough for the bird, living in his own reality before bringing up the one topic he was scared to actually start, hoping that he could get the words out right. "Actually, there was something I've been meaning to talk about with ya.."
Her head snapped up, wondering what the hell he was going to say when Hawks replied back a moment later. "You see, I'm really happy you're here and everything. I swear, it's a dream come true that I get to have my little sis back.."
Then the bird sucked in a breath before trying to give her enough information without actually giving anything away. "But the business I'm in, it's really dangerous and I don't want you to get hurt.."
Hikari resisted rolling her eyes at that, finding irony in the fact that she had been in the center of danger her whole life without him even knowing.
Although that's when Hawks said something that made the girl stop, staring at her brother as he replayed a memory from her past. "So uhh well, I think it would be better if people didn't know we were related just yet. Just until I get everything straightened out.."
The room became immediately quiet as Hikari stared at Hawks silently, continuing to swirl her spoon in her drink before bitterly smiling on the inside.
Shit Kei, I already knew you were ashamed of me but hearing you say it again still hurts.
And it was true that Hikari already knew that Hawks didn't like saying that he had a sister, wanting to claim that he was an only child in his eyes but did he really have to say it again like that?
It was like a sword had pierced her chest, all those horrible past feelings plowing into her immediately as she dipped her head down towards the floor.
Hawks seemed to notice this, his eyes immediately panicking before trying to explain the best way he could. It wasn't that he wanted this. It was just with Dabi and the league, she was such a weak easy target, he didn't want her to get involved.
"I just mean that with the commission and everything, I don't want you to get wrapped into something dangerous. By being related to me, you'll have a target on your back with a lot of bad people and I just want you to stay safe that's all. It's not like I want you to leave or anything. I love having you here..."
But he was quickly cut off when Hikari spoke over him, a small smile of acceptance on her face. It seemed warm but Hawks couldn't help but feel a hint of sadness in it as well.
"I understand Kei-chan."
Blinking in surprise, the bird couldn't help but question. "Are you sure? I don't want you thinking that I don't.."
But once again, he was cut off by Hikari's kind voice, taking her spoon out of her drink before placing it on the table. "I get it. This is your job, right? You do what you think is best."
Although what the girl was thinking was just newfound clarity, knowing that he'd always pick the commission over her, that's how it was when they were kids and that's how it was now. She wasn't surprised.
It's okay. I realized what was important to you the day you left me and never came back. I already know how you feel. Stop trying to find excuses already. Don't you know that's really cruel big brother?
Lucky for her, their food came a moment later, the conversation dropped immediately before Hawks glanced towards his sister with concern as he dug into his fried chicken.
Sure, Hikari said denying their relationship was alright, but if that was the case then why did he still feel so shameful about it?
And unknowing to the two siblings, a group of boys seemingly looked over in their direction before widening their eyes in disbelief at the strawberry dressed girl, quickly getting the attention of his friends as he muttered back. "It can't be..."
The minute they left the cafe, Hawks was about to bring up their strange conversation before someone's voice called back excitedly, phone and pen already in hand. "No way, you were right! It is Hawks, I can't believe it!"
Almost immediately, the entire parking lot bursted with screaming as dozens of people surrounded them all at once, a camera flashing in their face. "I hear you're getting promoted to number two soon! Congratulations, can I get an autograph for my kid?"
And that caused Hawks to throw up his over the top personality before giving one of the kids a wink and reaching forward to grab the pen a moment later. Whether he liked it or not the bird had kept the public happy, even if he wasn't feeling up for it.
"Thank ya very much. And of course you can, who should I make the name out too?"
Hikari couldn't but watched with narrowed eyes, now seeing the complete opposite of her brother's original personality displayed in front of her.
When they were kids Keigo hated crowds, he hated talking excessively and he hated being the center of attention.
But she supposed that the commission changed that also.
Now the person in front of her hardly looked like her brother, so much so that it made Hikari sigh out in hidden sadness. She missed Keigo, her real brother Keigo..
Although she was quickly taken out of her thoughts when a couple of girls pushed Hikari away a moment later, obviously wanting to get closer to the bird as they gushed. "Oh Hawks, you're so cool! Can I get your number?"
And that was the start of everyone seemingly pushing the girl out the way, like she was utter trash that needed to be removed from Hawks' side, the hero too distracted with answering multiple questions in order to notice what happened.
It continued until she was pushed out the circle entirely, the girl standing from the outside watching the faint flicker of her brother shine so brightly in the center as someone gushed. "Hawks, who was that girl that was with you, are you guys dating?"
Watching his movements, Hikari then watched as her brother publicly said the words she had already known. "What? Nah, she was just a fan. Definitely not as pretty as you baby bird.."
The girl screamed and Hawks seemed satisfied as his sister stood off in the corner, that same sword piercing her chest at his careless words.
Yeah, they just talked about it and she knew where his intentions were but hearing him completely deny her every single time was just as painful as the last, even when she tried to hide it.
And that was because every time he said it, she couldn't help but be brought back to the orphanage, the one where no one would look at her other than the murderer Takami's daughter. Of course he'd be ashamed, of course he wouldn't want to be related to her.
That's right brother, no one wants to be related to a villain. That's exactly what the orphanage kids said too. Probably why you changed your name, so you could cover up your shame. Can't say I blame you though.
Sighing to herself, Hikari willed the sadness away before someone from behind her forced his hand over her mouth, the girl gasping before his large body pushed her into the nearest alleyway.
Once they were alone, the girl frowned before jamming her elbow into his side as he groaned as Hikari turned around and jammed her other foot into his a moment later with no hesitation.
It was enough for the man to let go, Hikari backing away a couple feet before scoffing. "What the hell.."
Yet she stopped when another seven or so people appeared in front of them, twisted smirks on their faces. "No way, it really is her. You were right Matsu, it's Dabi's side whore.."
At the unpleasant name, the girl couldn't help but cross her arms in disgust. This is exactly what she didn't want to happen. Well, at least they didn't know the other half at least.
"If you know me then I'm pretty sure you should be on your knees begging and apologizing right now. I'd hurry to, cause I don't' ask twice.."
The boy couldn't help but burst out laughing though, already pulling out their phones and taking pictures of the pastel pink blonde girl. "Yeah sweetheart? Well I hate to say it but your threat doesn't really mean anything when you're dressed like that. Is this what you do in your free time?"
Another one of his friends added in. "Pretty pathetic if you ask me. In fact, I think everyone would love to know about how "scary" Dabi's little side piece actually is. You know, there are plenty of people out there that really don't like him, people that would love to see him suffer. Maybe they could start with you..."
Snapping a picture, Matsu smirked before Hikari growled under her breath, all of her composure used up from Hawks. "I wouldn't do that if I were you.."
Yet once again, the boys only laughed, circling her like prey. "Oh yeah? You gonna stop me? Nah, you know what I don't think you will, you wanna know why?"
Leaning forward, Matsu, continued coldly as Hikari glared. "Cause I don't think you are actually as scary as you claim to be, Princess.."
At the nickname, the girl's control finally snapped, Matsu not even getting a second to process before his face was crushed into the wall next to him, the back of his neck being held by the girl in question.
"You don't get to call me that."
She hated that goddamn nickname as it was but hearing it from someone other than Dabi made her skin crawl, and she supposed that was probably what he meant to do in the first place. Bad move.
Her tone was laced with cruel hate as the rest of his friends immediately approached, quirks at that ready. "Let him go before you regret it."
Glancing between his friends and the man that she was holding against the wall, Hikari felt the sense of a challenge in the back of her throat, her hand already reaching towards her necklace.
"Will I? Because I'm pretty sure you will be the one regretting it. You see, I'm already pissed off from today as it is. So, don't make me ask again or else you'll know why you shouldn't have screwed with me."
From the unhinged tone in her voice, a couple men lowered their hands while others weren't that smart, their quirks burning stronger than ever.
And Hikari was ready, she was so ready for a fight.
Although that's when Hawks' annoying voice echoed through the space, worry and anxiety laced in the tone. "Hika-chan! Where are you?!"
Groaning immediately, Hikari then let go of Matsu before he crumbled to the ground in a cough as his friend rushed to him immediately.
You really have to ruin all my fun, don't you Kei?
Then she looked down at the deplorable men before scoffing in their direction. "You're lucky I can't do shit right now, but don't think that means you can just do whatever the hell you want. I'd think very carefully about your next decisions if I were you..."
The few boys cursed something in her direction but Hikari could barely hear them as she walked away, their voices laced with disdain and anger.
"You bitch, you're going to regret that!"
"You'll pay for hurting my friend!"
All of those cliche lines and more were uttered before the girl scoffed under her breath, turning the corner as Hawks finally caught sight of her, his eyes frantic and scared. "Hikari, there you are! Thank god, where were you? I thought something happened.."
Bringing her into a hug, the girl ignored the feeling of his warmth before replying back with that same sweet tone that he had come to know. "I-I got lost. I'm sorry Kei-chan. I didn't mean to make you worry."
And that was enough for Hawks to immediately soften, his shaking arms quieting down before muttering into her hair with relief. "It's okay, let's just go home.."
As Matsu grumbled under his breath, his friends seemed just as pissed off for him, already pulling up the picture of that girl before stumbling to his feet.
"That bitch, she's going to pay. I'll have everyone I know teach her listen. That way we can wipe that pretty little smirk off her face and she can be the one begging to apologize to me."
One of the men nodded in agreement. "Yeah! What the hell was she even saying anyways? Like we'd beg and apologize to her. That girl is all talk I'm telling you. We are the ones she should look out for.."
Feeling the energy in the room, the group began to walk away before another one of the boys added. "A full frontal attack would be nice. That will take her down a few pegs for sure. Let's get our men on that.."
Although, he quickly stopped when they turned the corner and found someone leaning against the wall, blocking their pathway, a slight shiver down their spine at the sight.
"Oh? And can I join in on this little party you're having?"
Immediately shutting their mouths, they watched as the man lazily threw a hand up before his cerulean eyes bore into them a second later.
"What? What's with the silence? Weren't you all so giddy a second ago about making my Princess beg for you? I'd like to hear more of that.."
Knowing they were screwed, the group pushed Matsu in front before he gulped, trying to make the crazed villain understand somehow. "Y-You got it all wrong man. You see, she threatened us, injured one of our own. You know how that is, right?"
Although he was slowly stopped when Dabi raised his eyes into a smirk. "Oh yes, I understand completely. But you see, you had the stupid idea to go after her first, so where does that leave us then? Suddenly, your words don't mean shit now, do they?"
Gulping in response, Matsu stuttered. "W-Well, that's not it either. We were just doing you favor man. Yeah, that's it."
This caused Dabi's brow to raise in question, genuine curiosity in his tone. "A favor?"
Nodding back, the boy quickly spoke. "Y-Yeah man. She's no good for you. I mean we saw how weak she was. Do you really want a girl like that? It's obvious she's just using you to get stronger. Pretty pathetic if you ask me. You deserve better I think.."
The boy then watched as the villain took in his words before laughing under his breath, kicking himself off the wall in the process to get closer. "You're so wrong it's hysterical. What was it you called her again?"
Snapping his fingers, Dabi then widened his eyes with fake realization. "Ah yes, my whore. It seems you don't know her at all sadly.."
Then he took another step closer as the boys started to back away at the same time, the villains steps being the only sound in the space. "But you know, I'm feeling generous. So I'll let you live. But instead, how about we enlighten you, give you a little lesson you won't forget?"
Knowing they didn't really have a choice they watched as Dabi's fingers started to spark with blue fire before speaking with utter unhinged amusement, a sadistic smile on his face as he moved towards the boys once more.
"Come on, I know you want to know more about her, my whore."
Laying on her bed, Hikari sighed to herself before her phone began to go off in her pocket, the girl pulling it out before looking at the screen and finding a singular text with no name.
I have a present for you Princess.
She twisted her head in slight curiosity before quickly sneaking over to Hawks' room and finding him completely passed out, a bottle of alcohol by his bed. Well, he'd be out for at least the next couple hours at least. Now was a good enough time as any..
Her phone dinged again with an address before Hikari looked at the closet of frilly clothes and immediately turned away from it, opting for the plain black tank top she had worn when Dabi pushed her from that railing.
Yeah it had blood stains on it but anything was better than that stupid dress she wore before. She'd never hear the end of it if he saw her like that anyways.
Quickly sneaking out of the apartment, Hikari quickly reached the location before pushing the old metal door open, revealing the man in question sitting at a small broken chair.
"Took you long enough, Did you have a hard time giving that bird the slip?"
Narrowing her eyes, Hikari walked over to him before kicking the chair out from under him, the villain falling onto the floor a moment later as she shouted back.
"I fucking hate you, do you know what I've had to endure these past two days? Literal torture, and I would know cause I've had the real thing I'd prefer that over what the hell I have to suffer through next. He's driving me crazy, I feel like I"m losing my damn mind!"
Although the only thing Dabi did was give a small chuckle, not helping her anger at all. "Really that bad huh? I mean I knew that shitty bird was annoying but it seems you've experienced something else entirely. Don't blame me. He's your brother."
The fact he was actually enjoying her rant made the girl ball her hands into fists. "You have no idea. Every second with him I want to rip my own hair out. This better be over quickly or I don't think my sanity can take it.."
Standing up from his place on the floor, Dabi then shoved his hands in his pocket before replying. "You find anything yet?"
Although Hikari only shook her head. "No, the guy is just as locked up as you said he'd be. I'm going to have to dig further and a part of me is dreading that cause who knows what else that could bring.."
Dabi watched her through narrowed eyes, seeing her utter turmoil before speaking back plain. "Give me something to prove that."
Turning around in disbelief, she watched the man make his way toward her as Hikari scoffed. "Excuse me? Why the hell would I have to do that? I already told you I haven't found anything.."
Although that's when Dabi reached forward to grab her neck before pinning the girl to the wall behind them, his fingers very lightly holding her throat. "Because like I said before Princess, you're his sister. Because of that, I can't trust you either. I need proof."
Hikari wasn't intimated in the slightest, staring at the man's eyes before scoffing. "The proof is in my words Dabi. You don't' need anything else but that."
Yet the man only narrowed his eyes at that, bringing his hand up from her neck to brush a few fingers across her skin. "It's not enough. I don't trust anything unless I see it, and the same goes for you.."
She knew where this was coming more, from his trauma as a child, from the everyone in his entire life screwing him over. Even her own brother was probably trying to as well. Hikari couldn't blame him for his feelings but still felt bothered by them nonetheless.
And it had been a few years since they had seen each other as well so she was sure that didn't help anything, the two leaving on the rocky note the last couple of times.
"Is this about last time? Cause you were the one that went behind my back. If anyone should have trust issues it's me asshole.."
Frowning at her words, Dabi replied coldly. "And who was the one that walked away? Cause it wasn't me.."
Hikari couldn't help but think about the time she was referring to, glancing towards the villains lips before closing her eyes in shame and pushing his chest back.
"I thought we said we weren't ever going to talk about that."
Yet that seemed to give Dabi back his confidence, his hand grasping the wrist that she tried to push against. "I don't know. How can I not talk about it when you keep eye fucking me from across the room?"
Scoffing out in disbelief, the girl huffed. "And you don't think I notice you check out my ass every time I turn around? Grow the fuck up Dabi. Yeah we hooked up, so what? Get over it already. It's been years.."
Dabi then looked down at his hold on her wrist before smirking to himself. "I am. Are you?"
Widening her eyes at his words, Hikari then shoved her hand away before turning to hide the irritating blush on her cheeks, recalling the nights that they had shared with each other prior.
"Yeah, I am. Glad that's resolved."
Then she angrily shoved her hand away before reaching into her pocket and lifting a single red feather out of him. "Here, are you happy?! Take it, now you speak to me through the feather anytime you want. I won't be able to answer obviously but it's faster than texting through the phone and looking suspicious."
Giving him what he wanted, Dabi looked at the red feather before taking it in his hands, his fingers playing with the bristle as he watched Hikari immediately shiver. "H-Hey, stop it or I'm taking it back.."
There was a small crack to her tone, signally that she was flustered as the villain smirked, blowing on the soft feather once as Hikari gasped before sticking the object of her trust into his pocket. "Too late. It's alright mine."
Then he pointed towards the door to his left a moment later, amusement taking up his entire features at the entertainment he was going to receive from this.
"Now, are you ready to see your surprise Princess? I have a feeling you're going to like it."
Struggling with the ropes behind his back, Matsu looked around the abandoned warehouse with fear and confusion. Dabi had just left him here so who knows what the hell he was thinking of doing to him?
Just then, the door began to open as a dozen people filled the space, all forming in a line before bowing towards each other a moment later. What the hell was going on?
Although that's when he heard the light footsteps approach, the stranger all muttering under their breath as they passed. "Welcome boss."
Already feeling intimidated, Matsu and his friends immediately began to struggle once again before one of the men placed a chair in front of him as the steps approached. "Well well well, what do we have here?"
Her voice caused shiver to appear up his spine as the girl seated herself in front of the scared boy, her amber eyes piercing his very soul. "I told you you should think about your decisions. Looks like you didn't listen very well, did you?"
Gulping in response, the boy laid eyes on the same eyes he had tormented just hours before, the pastel pink blonde haired girl that he vowed to take down.
Although now she looked completely different, her black tank top replacing any amount of pink as she leaned forward with interest. "Hey Matsu, have you ever heard of Valkyrie before?"
The name made the boy immediately widen his eyes, recalling stories of the villain but never actually meeting them. He wasn't sure if he wanted to from the horrors he heard. No one even knew their face. "Y-Yeah, why are you asking that?"
Yet that's when the girl smirked under her breath, her amber orbs mocking him slightly. "You see, I'm not just Dabi's side whore. Oh no, I'm so much more, and I tried to warn you but you didn't listen so you know what I have to do?"
Her fingers then trailed to her necklace as Matsu connected the dots in his mind. Wait, that was impossible. This girl, this blonde haired girl is the Valkyrie, the bringer of misfortune and death? No no, it couldn't be..
Although that's when Hikari's hands gripped the crystal pendant on the end before meeting his eyes with a cruel glint. "I have to ask again."
Then she ripped the object off of her neck before Matsu's eyes widened all at only, taking in the monster before him as Valkyrie laughed cruelly.
"I think you should start that begging and apologizing now."
Oop. This was super fun to write and I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. Hikari does some choice things as we said before but she is a villain with a messed up past so that's to be expected. She doesn't murder though, that's where she draws the line.
But man, if she isn't a badass though.
It's cool cause both Hawks and Hikari are living a double life, lying to each other to keep them in a small little bubble of happiness for now. Two sides of the same coin.
Next chapter: Hikari takes it up a notch with digging into Hawks' life.
