Hue knew today was going to be a good day. In fact, it was going to be a pretty amazing day. Because he was going to be spending it with a certain redhead.
Liberty had always insisted that she was far too busy to focus on a relationship. And honestly he could understand. With everything going on in the city, he couldn't imagine she found much time to set aside for casual lunch dates and the like. So, while he made his feeling known, he never tried to press her on it.
But lately it seemed like she was becoming more open to the idea of them starting something. Maybe it was because she felt like she could relax just a tiny bit with the Vanguard handling things, or maybe her mothers had finally talked her into just going for it. Whatever the cause, he was grateful for the fact she was willing to set aside more time for herself. And even more so for him.
When he'd asked her if she wanted to spend valentine's day together, he had been worried she would turn him down. After all, their little lunch dates could be passed off of just a casual meeting between friends. This might have been taking things a step too far on his end. But when she shrugged as said she didn't have anything else to do, he was elated.
He intended to make today perfect.
He'd found a nice charming little cafe that was out of the way enough they didn't have to worry about being recognized at. He'd gotten her a gift, nothing too expensive. She would have given him an earful if he'd tried to go too big. But when he saw the bracelet he thought she would like it, and it wasn't like it was out of his budget.
And he had cleared his schedule. He'd been a little concerned about taking the day off for a simple valentine's date, but when he'd told Ms. Keane did what he had planned, she practically ordered him to take the day.
Everything was in order, and he'd planned out every step.
"We've just got word of a giant monster rampaging through Townsville, the Vanguard have managed to contain it to a certain area and evacuate it, but reports say.."
Except that. He didn't plan for that.
Hue almost cursed himself for leaving the TV on as he was getting dressed. He had just been about to leave and make his way to pick up Liberty when he'd overhead the breaking news. While the Vanguard had managed to prevent any casualties and contained the monster to an isolated area, it seemed they were having trouble actually bringing it down. He didn't see the usual heavy hitters among them there. Astro and Cayenne were typically the go to among the members to deal with such creatures.
Were they busy? On another mission? Maybe they were on the way there at this very moment… but, he didn't feel right rolling the dice on something like that. He sighed and made his way out of the door, pulling out his phone as he did. He dialed in Liberty's number as he sprinted down the sidewalk, a blue glow overtaking his body. He focused most of his blue go glow on his lower body, increasing the muscles in his legs and moving at a rather shocking speed.
"Hey Hue. What's up?"
"Hey Libby, I just uh… I wanted to let you know I might be running a little late. It's nothing to worry about really. Should just take ten or fifteen minutes." It wouldn't take him long to get downtown, and he wouldn't have to stick around after he brought this monster down. He could let the Vanguard take it from there.
"That's fine. How about I just meet you there?" Liberty asked.
Hue was about to say it wasn't necessary. He could still pick her up when this was over, but… better safe than sorry, right? "Sounds great. I'll meet you there. And I'll be sure to pay you back for gas," he assured.
Liberty let out a chuckle. "Hue, not to brag, but I'm the mayor of the city. I can afford gas money. It's like a fifteen minute drive."
Hue smirked. "I guess you can. Guess this whole valentine date thing is making me feel nostalgic. Like back when we were teens, right?" he asked.
"I never said this was a date," Liberty pointed out.
"But you never said it wasn't either," Hue countered.
"Aren't you cheeky. Just get it in gear big guy. I'll see you later."
"Yes ma'am."
Hue hung up the phone and continued running, a determined look in his eye. One little throwback wasn't going to ruin today. He'd deal with this, get to the cafe, and everything else would go as planned. He saw the taped off area the police had set up for the Vanguard, and headed towards it.
His glow spread over his body, and changed him into his costume. The officers saw him approaching, but he slipped by them. "Good afternoon officers! Doing a great job as always! I'll just be going on ahead to help my students out!" he shouted as he leapt over the barrier, giving them a smile and wave.
He could see the monster from here. It really was a rather large one. A lot like the ones who used to rampage back with the Powerpuff Girls were active heroes. He saw a few members down on the ground, setting up what looked like a blockade, while the members who could fly were up and buzzing around it, trying to keep it busy.
Micah blasted lightning at it, and though it seemed to at least feel the attack, the dense scale covering its body ws protecting it from any real harm. "Man, where are you guys…?" Micah muttered. He, Persi, and his little cousins were doing everything they could to keep this guy occupied and busy. But even with all of them, they didn't have enough raw power to put him down for good.
The most they could do was keep him off balance. They needed Cayenne or Astro to put this guy away. "I'll take it from here kids!" Micah turned around just in time to see a blue blur rush by him. Hue had once against focused his glow on his feet, kicking off the ground and propelling himself towards the monster.
He brought his fist back, swinging upwards and nailing it right in the chin. The creature was rocked, and it's head snapped back as he stumbled from the blow. Hue kept going., turning his body and landing on another building nearby. "My, you are a tough one! I'd hope that one would've taken you down. Looks like I'll have to put my back into this!"
He jumped off again and Micah and the other's watched as his fists began glowing. The monster roared and turned towards him, swinging one of it's claws. "Slate…!" He swung one of his fist, easily knocking the claw away from him as he continued towards the monster's face. "Slugger!"
Hue swung downwards, hitting the monster right on the front of it's long lizard-like face, and sending it straight down to the ground. The ground shook as it landed, it's teeth shattering and a dent in it's upper face from the force of the blow. Hue landed on top of it as the others looked on in awe. "Holy crap…" Micah muttered.
"Whoa, that was so awesome!" Hank said, beaming as he made his way over.
Levi whistled. "Now that there is some top notch monster wrassling."
"Nice job Mr. Go… oh, I mean, Blue Bull," Renee said amused. She knew he liked to go with his hero persona on the job, even if his 'secret identity' was anything but.
Hue laughed, ignoring the slip up. "Well, I just happened to see it on the news and thought you all might need a little help. Now, I don't need to be rude, but I sort of have to get going now. You kids can handle the police report, right?" he asked.
Renee nodded. "Sure, we'll take care of it. You go on ahead."
"Leaving already? What's the rush, teach? You got a hot date or something?" Raleigh asked, smirking. Hue flinched, rubbing the back of his head. His reaction did not go unnoticed by the others at all. "Holy shit, I was just joking! He reall does! You got a valentine's day date?!"
"Oh, do we know her?!"
"Is she pretty?!"
"Is it another teacher?!"
Hue held his hands up. He was on pretty friendly terms a fair number of the Vanguard, both as a hero mentor and a school teacher, so it wasn't surprising that they'd bug him about his personal life. And he honestly didn't mind all that much. But he was still on a timetable here. "Sorry kids, you can grill me on it later. For now I have to get going."
Before they could ask him anything else, he turned and leapt off, landing and rushing off once more. The cafe was on the other side of town, but if he booked it he could still get there in a pretty reasonable time. He just needed to make sure-
"Help! Thief! My purse!"
Hue slid to a stop. Looks like he was going to be a bit later than expected. He looked over and saw an elderly woman pointing up into the air. He followed her gaze and then saw what looked like a man on… a hoverboard? Not the faking one with wheels, but an actual flying hoverboard.
He quickly ran after the figure, focusing his glow on his hand. More specially his finger. With the force he'd have to jump with to tackle them from the air, he might have ended up seriously injuring the guy. He had to find another way to bring him down. He raised his hand up and took aim, then flicked his finger.
The force of the blue glow enhanced flick sent an air cannon like force towards the figure, knocking them off balance and sending them tumbling. The man screamed as he fell towards the ground, and once he got closer, Hue leapt up and caught both him on the board. He landed on a rooftop nearby.
"I'm going to assume that this purse isn't yours sir. At least I hope it isn't anyway. I'm not a fashion expert, but even I can tell it really doesn't match with the rest of your outfit."
The man looked panicked for a moment, then turned towards him and went wide eyed. "Ah! You! You're the Blue Bull! I saw you on the news!"
Hue nodded. "Yes, I am. Now would you like to tell me what exactly you think you're doing stealing purses? And where did you get that hoverboard?" he asked.
The man frowned. "I'm not in the mood to be lectured by some big-shot hero. Not all of us are as lucky as you. I needed the money, so I took it. And that board was supposed to help me make a quick getaway, but I guess that's a bust. Built it for nothing…"
Hue raised an eyebrow. "Wait, you built that?"
The man looked at him confused. "Yeah, why?"
"In a lab?"
"In my basement."
Hue narrowed his eyes. "So let me get this straight. You say you need money?" The man nodded. "So, you built a full functional hoverboard in a basement. And your first thought after that was, I'm going to go steal a woman's purse?" he asked.
"Well, yeah, I just needed… ugh… huh…"
Hearing him say it like that, not it sounded kind of stupid.
Hue set the man down and sighed. "Okay, listen. I really do have to be somewhere. So I'm going to let you off the hook just this once, and give you some advice. You seem like a… relatively, smart guy. So instead of stealing purses, why don't you get a patent or sell your hoverboard tech. Or better yet, apply to a tech company. I'm sure they could use someone like you."
The man scratched the back of his head. "You really think I could get a job out of this?" It would probably be a lot easier and pay more than petty theft.
"I'd be shocked if you didn't. Seriously, put in some applications for a tech company. There's plenty of them around. Now I'm gonna go give this purse back, and… I'm also gonna break this because I'm not entirely sure I should trust you with it," Hue said before stepping on the hoverboard and snapping it in two.
The man winced at the sight. "That's… fair I guess." He picked up what was left of his board as Hue turned to leave. "Thanks for the advice Blue Bull."
"No problem! Hope to hear good things from you in the future! Please don't do this again or else I really will have to take you in!" He leapt off the building and back down to the street, making his way back to where he saw the woman. He ran up to her, offering her her purse back. "Here you are ma'am."
The elderly woman smiled. "Oh, thank you so much young man. I had no idea what I was going to do," she said, taking it back from him. "Here, let me give you a little something as a reward. It's the least I can do."
Hue shook his head. "No reward is necessary ma'am. I'm just happy to help," he assured. "I hope I don't come off as rude, but I really have to get going. There's a certain lady I can't afford to keep waiting."
The old woman laughed. "Well, she must be quite special to have you in such a rush."
Hue nodded. "She really is. I hope you have a pleasant day ma'am," he said waving back at her as he ran off again. "Okay, a few minor setbacks, but I should still…"
An explosion went off in the distance, followed by a scream.
"Are you kidding me…?"
He pulled out his phone again to call Liberty. It seemed like he was going to be a couple more minutes late than he planned after all.
Hue wondered if he had done anything wrong recently. He couldn't think of anything off of the top of his head, but he must have done something to collect all this bad karma.
Incident after incident seemed to occur every time he tried to make his way to the cafe, and before he knew it half the day had seemed to go back. He'd ended up having to call her quite a few times to tell her he was going to be delayed, and while she didn't sound upset at him, eventually she just said they could call it a day and reschedule.
He was pretty disappointed honestly.
She'd assured him she understood, and while he knew they could find another day to get together… today was supposed to be special. It was Valentine's day after all. Call him sappy, but he could have liked the chance to romance the women he held affection for on the holliday.
It wasn't like he regretted helping. He was a hero, that was just part of the job. And moreover it was just part of his nature. He couldn't bring himself to ignore someone when they called out for help. It just wasn't in him. He just wished things could have worked out differently. Well, next year would be better.
He sighed as he made his way up to the door of his apartment, and then opened the door. Then he looked surprised as he saw the table in the middle of the room, which was already set up with candlelit dinner. Liberty smirked towards him. "What took you so long, big guy?" she asked.
Hue looked shocked. "Libby? What are you doing here? When did you…?"
Liberty rolled her eyes. "I get news updates on my phone Hue. Just like everybody else does. I don't know why it was today of all days, but there were accidents happening all over. I figured there was no way you were going to make it to the cafe. I left after your third call if I'm being honest," she said. "So, I figured I might as well get ahead of the curve and set up a little something here."
Hue looked at her confused, but then chuckled. "Wow… that's actually pretty amazing. I mean… Did you cook all of this?" he said, looking at the spread of chinese food.
Liberty scoffed. "Hell no. I ordered takeout. Hope that's alright."
Hue laughed. "That's fine." They used to order takeout all the time back when they were teens. They practically kept the place in business. He pulled a chair out and took a seat. "I really am sorry about not being able to make it. I just… I had to help the kids, and then all of this other stuff started happening and…"
She raised her hand. "Don't start getting all apologetic on me big guy. You're a hero. I know sometimes you get swamped with that type of stuff. Besides, I'm the last person who's gonna be mad at someone for having a booked schedule," she said. "You had people to help, so you helped them. Simple as that. It's part of your big cheesy charm."
"You do admit it's charming through…" Hue pointed out.
"In it's own ridiculous sort of way, yes."
"You really went all out with this. The candles and wine are a nice touch. I was thinking of something like this but I thought it might come on a little strong."
"Oh, it's definitely cheesy and sappy. But that's right up your alley, so I figured it was fine."
"Aw, thanks for thinking of me Libby."
"Just eat your food…"
The two smiled playfully at one another as they began digging in. This certainly wasn't how Hue planned Valentine's day doing, but he couldn't say he was too upset about it. It was hard to be disappointed about anything when he was with her after all.
"Happy valentine's day Libby."
A/N: Some Hue and Liberty fluff for Valentine's day! I know the Queen really likes these two and I needed to do some more writing for Hue anyway. Hope you guys enjoy!
