"Okay, let's try this again from the top."

"Yeah, we got it this time!"

If you wanna run away with me, I know a galaxy

And I can take you for a ride

I had a premonition that we fell into a rhythm

Where the music don't stop for life

Glitter in the sky, glitter in my eyes

Shining just the way I like

If you're feeling like you need a little bit of company

You met me at the perfect time

Mei and Rain spun around as they approached one another, moving perfectly in sync. Rain twirled Mei around and then spun her a few feet away, and Mei perfectly came to a stop and before they pointed at one another.

You want me, I want you, baby

My sugarboo, I'm levitating

The Milky Way, we're renegading

Yeah-yeah-yeah-yeah

During one of their last visits to Mewni, Rain had hit the dance floor when she heard a song she liked. She had danced like she usually did, which was apparently how she was supposed to. Delphine had sighed and mocked the girl about how she didn't know how to dance properly at these types of events, and of course Mei had to step up and defend her friend.

This had led to a few words being exchanged, and of course Mei promising they would come back with a performance that would blow everyone away at the next event. Rain was just excited getting to dance, while Mei was out to prove the princess of the waterfolk wrong. She was going to make her eat her words. Nobody came at her friend, or insulted her dancing skills. Or any skill that involved social graces.

Mei had planned out the steps, and now it was just perfecting them. They'd been doing pretty good so far, and if they kept it up they were going to show both Delphine and everyone else at the next party in mewni up.

I got you, moonlight, you're my starlight

I need you all night, come on, dance with me

I'm levitating

You, moonlight, you're my starlight (you're the moonlight)

I need you all night, come on, dance with me

I'm levitating

They started to approach the part of the song where they'd planned their big move. If they were going to impress the royals and nobles at the next party, they had to add some flare to the performance. Mei ran towards Rain, who braced herself and prepared to throw her in the air.

Mei leapt towards her, but as she did she saw a figure standing off to the side. Her eyes went wide as she saw a tall blue skinned man watching them. Her whole body seemed to lock up, and when Rain caught her she stumbled backwards. "Whoa, you okay?" she asked, looking worried.

Mei quickly stood up and began straightening her shirt out. She couldn't believe she spaced out like that. That jump should have been easy to nail on her part. "Yeah, I'm fine. I just didn't see…" She glanced over to where the man was standing, and Rain followed her gaze and then smiled.

"Oh! Grandpa Oberon, hey!" Rain said as she rushed over towards him.

She jumped up and Oberon reached out and caught her. The former ruler of Avalon hummed as Rain smiled at him. "Great-granddaughter," he greeted casually. Out of all of his granddaughter's offspring Rain was the most… affectionate. Oberon himself wasn't one for close contact, but that seemed to fly right over her head.

He found himself indulging her because… it wasn't like she would stop even if she asked. "Watcha doing outside of your study?" Rain asked.

Oberon set her down and then patted her on the head. "Simply taking a walk, little one. Even I will still take time to admire the beauty of Avalon," he explained. "But you and your companion caught my eye with your performance. At least I assume it was such."

He didn't really understand the fascination with earth culture, so this… music? He supposed, that's what it was. It was odd and sounded like nonsense to him. But their movements were rather impressive. To move in sync so well was a talent that could be put to great use outside of… whatever this was.

Rain nodded. "Yep! Me and Mei are practicing at a party!" she said before realizing something. "Oh, you haven't met Mei yet, have you?" she asked grabbing his hand. Her grandpa didn't get out much, and when he did he never left Avalon. So she never got to introduce him to any of her friends.

Oberon sighed as he let his great-granddaughter drag him along, and Mei seemed to lock up as they approached. "Grandpa Oberon, this is my friend Mei. Mei, this is my great-grandpa Oberon," Rain introduced.

Mei felt herself begin to panic. She had heard about Oberon. Before Nia took over he was the former leader of… well, pretty much everyone. All of the pantheons answered to him, and whenever the gods stepped out of line he was the one they answered to. Even now with him having stepped down, his name carried a lot of weight.

This was someone she wanted, no, had to make a good impression with. Not just for the sake of her reputation, but because he was Rain's great-grandfather. She curtsied towards him. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Lord Oberon," she said politely. "My name is Mei. Mei Long. I'm the daughter of Basteta and Junji."

Oberon stared down at her blankly. He didn't recognize the latter name, but Basteta… ah, the vessel of Sekhmet. Yes, he could see a bit of a resemblance. She was smart enough to greet him with the respect his name carried however, which meant she probably wasn't as foolish as some of the others his grandchildren tended to bring around.

"A pleasure to make your acquaintance little one," he said, nodding back to her. "I assume that whatever little performance you and my great-grandchild have planned is commonplace in the mortal world?"

Mei nodded. "Well, the song is popular where I come from, but the routine is something I came up with. Rain and I are going to outperform every single person at that party," she said, holding her head up proudly.

Oberon hummed. So the girl carried herself with a sense of pride. It made sense considering her lineage. Though many of the offspring of his granddaughter's company didn't seem to carry it. The attitude of the mortal realm had rubbed off and affected them, and they thought themselves equal to them. It wasn't something Oberon really understood, but he had long since given up arguing with them.

This one however seemed to at least take some semblance of dignity in her status. "As well you should. Especially if this gathering of your is one filled with mortals," he said casually. "The Children of Oberon should not falter or fail in any respect."

Rain tilted her head. "Huh… technically aren't we the Children of Titania now?" she asked, looking up towards her great-grandfather.

There was a long awkward moment of silence, and Mei wondered if she was about to see the angry sign of the former ruler of Avalon, but instead he sighed. "Yes, I suppose it would be," he said, folding his hands behind his back. "Though your mother has never been fond of the name as I recall."

Mei cleared her throat. "Well, for what it's worth Lord Oberon, I think it's still pretty obvious to everyone just how much your reputation still precedes you. I mean you've kept all the gods in line for ages. And even though Queen Titania is doing an amazing job, nobody is going to forget what you did for them. Or how powerful you are," she said.

Oberon looked amused. "My, such sweet laced words. Had I not known any better I might think you were trying to flatter and impress me," he said. Mei blushed a bit. Had she laid it on a little too thick. "But I imagine that you're just as skilled at spitting venom as you are honey."

"If you mean that she's good at insulting people, then yep. She's really good at it, especially when she gets angry," Rain said laughing.

Mei narrowed her eyes at her friend, and then turned back to Oberon. "Only when it's warranted," she pointed out. "Something, people just need to be put in check."

"Agreed. Knowing when and where to do it is a talent in itself. Especially for one so young," he said before turning around. "I will take my leave now. Please continue your routine. It was a pleasure, child of Sekhmet. Tis good to know my great-granddaughter keeps good company."

Oberin began walking off, and Rain waved after him. "Bye grandpa!" she said smiling. She turned around and then looked at Mei. "Good to see him outside his study. He's almost always in there all day… well, he does come out to play CTF sometimes."

Mei looked a bit surprised. "Wait, he plays…?" The former ruler of the gods playing a silly game like capture the flag? She had a hard time imagining it. "Huh… do you think I made a good impression?"

Rain reached up and rubbed her chin. "I guess so. I mean most of the other people he sees around here he usually just ignores. And then he makes this face," she said, rolling her eyes and making an exasperated expression. She went back to normal and smiled. "So yeah, I think you're good."

Mei smiled, looking relieved. "That's good." Her reputation was important to her, but there was a very small list of people she felt like she had to win over on a one on one level. Oberon definitely was on the list though. For a number of reasons.

She was pretty sure Nia would never allow it, but she hadn't wanted him thinking she wasn't good enough to hang out with Rain and trying to shoo her away. The girl was important to her, and winning over her family might not have been essential, but… it was still something she felt she needed to do.

"Wanna get back to practice?"

"You bet."

After they had finished practicing their routine, the girls had sat down so they could have some tea. Oberon who had been walking back spotted them, and when they invited him to sit down with them he found himself indulging his great granddaughter yet again.

"Would you like some milk and sugar with your tea, Lord Oberon?" Mei asked politely.

Oberon sat back in his chair. "Would you recommend it?" he asked, curiously about how the girl would respond. He had spent quite a bit of time traveling the mortal world during everyone's banishment away from Avalon, and he had picked up a thing or two about tea himself.

Mei smiled back at him. "Well… considering this is Assam tea and you're eating quiche, I believe it's best to go without them. Without sweeteners, Assam tea pairs up nicely with flavorful savory foods. Also, if you aren't a fan of the sweets I brought, I recommend trying the smoked salmon with crème fraiche finger sandwiches. The culinary arts have come a long way and it'd be a shame not to sample them."

Oberon hummed. So she wasn't just playing pretend it seemed. He took a sip of his cup. "Delicious…"

Mei nodded. "Thank you and if you find the tea to your liking feel free to take the tin. I can always order more," she said before looking towards Rain, who was stuffing sweets down her face. "Ugh… Rain, you have icing all over yourself."

She grabbed a napkin and tried to wipe the frosting off, but Rain ended up pulling her into a hug. "Hug time!" she cheered happily.

"Hey! You're getting icing on my clothes!"

Oberon looked somewhat amused as he watched the two. Perhaps his granddaughter would pick up some manners from this one… or perhaps not. Either way he was glad to see she was keeping some sort of good company.
