Rain whistled as she walked along the log, hopping from foot to foot to keep her balance. A few paces behind her was Mei, who had her arms crossed and looked at her with a mix of curiosity and annoyance. "So you really didn't see that?" she asked, not able to comprehend just how she'd missed the figure rising out of the lake.
"Nuh-uh," Rain said, shaking her head. Mei had said something about some lady being in the water while she had her back turned. She was pretty sure she had just mistaken it for another mermaid or something. Especially since one of them threw a sword at her. She threw it back into the water like always… dumb mermaids.
Mei shook her head and sighed. "This island is so weird…" Every time she came here there was always something nuts going on. Gargoyles, or mermaids, or trees that could talk. She was used to seeing strange things back home, but this island was much smaller and somehow had much crazier stuff going on than Townsville did.
"I got it!"
"Not quite."
"Over here!"
The two girls both looked up as they heard voices in the distance. They quickly followed the sound of them and then came upon Oberon. The former king of Avalon was moving around as his two of her great-grandsons, Dawn and Dusk, moved around him and tried to grab the flag from around his waist.
He moved out of the way just before Dawn could get a hand on it, a smug smile on his face. "If you continue to telegraph your moves so openly I'm afraid there's little chance you'll ever get your hands on this flag dear boy," he said.
Dusk teleported behind him, looking ready to try and snatched the flag from him, but then he noticed his sister and Mei. "What are you guys doing out here?" he asked.
Rain smiled and began making her way towards them, and Mei followed. "Just taking a walk," she said, looking excitedly. "You guys are playing capture the flag with great-grandpa? How come you didn't tell us? We want to play!"
Mei raised an eyebrow. "Says whom?" she asked. Running around the outside in the woods trying to grab some flag wasn't her idea of fun. She was honestly surprised that Oberon was doing it. But she guessed he was just being a good grandpa or something.
Dawn crossed his arms. "Because it's just supposed to be us and grandpa Oberon," he explained. That was the whole point of it. He and his brother's polished teamwork against either their great-grandpa, mother, or cousin Umbriel. "And because you'd just slow us down anyway, so…"
Rain pouted while Mei narrowed her eyes. "No we wouldn't! We'd totally be able to help! Let us play too!" Rain whined.
"No. You can play with grandpa Oberon later. After we're finished," Dusk said. "We're training right now, and we don't want you and Mei getting in the way."
Mei scoffed. "Excuse me? We would not be getting in the way! We could play this stupid game just as well as you two could," she argued.
Both Dusk and Dawn smirked at the claim. "You're kidding? No way," Dawn said, shaking his head. "Me and Dusk have super tight teamwork. There's no way you guys could keep up. You'd just throw us off."
"Wanna bet?!" Mei challenge.
Dawn shrugged. "We don't need to bet, we already know we'd win."
Oberon looked at the four children, an idea growing in his head. "Well children, perhaps some competition will indeed settle things," he stated. They all looked towards him as he took the flag off of his waist. "Your sister and her friend against you two."
Rain looked excited, and Mei huffed. Dawn and Dusk both tilted their heads, looking confused. "Why grandpa? You already know we're gonna win"
Oberon walked over towards them. "Perhaps. If you're so sure then there's nothing to concern yourself over. You can win and we can return to our game." He then knelt down and handed the flag towards Dusk. "You will bear the flag. Rain and her friend will try to take it from you."
Dawn hummed while Dusk just shrugged. He figured they would have to be the one to hold the flag. If they were the ones taking it would be over in like two seconds. "Fine. I guess we can spare like five minutes," Dawn said.
Rain clapped her hands. "Alright! Yeah! We're totally gonna win!"
Mei pointed towards them and then spoke. "You two should start off somewhere else. It wouldn't be fair if we all started right here," she stated. She knew that Dusk could read minds, so she didn't want him trying to pry into her head when she thought up one here.
Dusk rolled his eyes. "Fine. We're gonna go over near the castle gates and wait for you there. Dawn is gonna be the one holding the flag." He figured they would need the handicap if they were going to have any fun.
The twins turned and walked off, and once they were far enough away Mei turned towards Rain. "Okay, here's the plan. As soon as we go near them then-"
Rain raised her hand. "If we go near them then Dusk is gonna read our minds and figure out the plan," she pointed out. "I think we should just rush in and try and take it!"
Oberon hummed. "I don't think that is wise dear Rain. Your brothers' abilities at this point in time exceed your own. And your friend stands no chance against them."
Mei hummed. "So we can't get near Dusk because he'll spoil the plan, and we can't go in guns blazing… okay, we're gonna have to be clever about this." She could be clever. She was all about being clever. She may not have been a god like the twins or her oldest siblings, but she was smart.
Dawn and Dusk stood in front of the castle gates as they waited for their sister and Mei to show up. "What's taking them so long?" Dawn asked, annoyed.
"They're probably trying to come up with a plan or something. Don't worry about it," Dusk said, waving his brother's annoyance off. He knew they'd be able to handle whatever his sister and Mei came up with. After dealing with their grandfather and mother for so long this would be a cake walk.
"Coming through!"
Both of them opened their eyes as they sensed their sister coming towards them. Rain rushed at them at full speed, and Dawn smirked as he got ready. "Direct approach huh?" Dusk muttered. It made sense since he'd just read whatever plan they'd come up with in their minds.
Rain headed right towards Dawn, who put a hand over the flag and got ready to move. But suddenly Rain broke hard to the right, tackling Dusk. He was clearly caught off guard, and Rain smiled up at him. "Got ya!" she said, flying forward and pushing him away. She blasted air from her feet, going full speed ahead.
Dawn looked confused. He was the one who had the flag, so why was she going after Dusk? His twin on the other hand caught on immediately. "Divide and conquer huh?" he asked. Rain just kept pushing him along, and he didn't bother pushing back.
If they thought separating them was going to work, they were dead wrong. Rain would have a hard enough time taking on either of them, and Mei… well, she definitely wasn't going to be able to take on Dawn.
Dawn watched as they flew off, seemingly unaware that Mei was sneaking up behind him. She jumped forward and reached for the flag, but Dawn frowned and then jumped over her. "Nice try…" he said, flying up above her. "Seriously? Rain would have been more fun."
Mei's eyes turned sharp. "Because Rain's too nice. I'm not gonna take it easy on you…"
"So?" Dawn asked.
Mei leapt up at him again, but Dawn flew out of the way. Mei kept going after him, but he skilfully avoided her. She was really quick and light on her feet, but not so much that he couldn't avoid her. "Seriously, if you were trying to split us up you should have had Rain come after me."
She smirked. "I get why you'd think that. Dusk is the smart one after all, so you wouldn't catch on," she teased.
Dawn looked slightly annoyed. "Oh really…?" He raised his hand and a number of fireballs formed around him. "Guess I shouldn't hold back then."
"Uh-oh…" Mei frowned and quickly began moving. This was still in the plan, but she was going to have to keep moving until Rain got to her part.
Dusk looked annoyed. He had scanned Rain's mind to see what she and Mei were planning, but what she'd told his sister was absolutely absurd. Rain may have believed it, but he didn't buy it for a second. She'd had to have lied to her about it to throw him off. And she had Rain drag him away so he couldn't read hers.
"Seriously. That's so annoying," Dusk said, teleporting out of the way as Rain tried to grab him again. "Seriously Rain? Didn't you think the plan she told you sounded even a little stupid?"
Rain huffed. "It sounded crazy! But so what? We do crazy things all the time that work out!" she said, rushing after him again.
"Yeah, well this isn't gonna be one of them," he said, moving out of the way again.
Rain kept rushing at him, but he managed to move out of the way just before she could grab him. He didn't know why she was still bothering to try and catch him. He didn't have a flag to steal, and she couldn't have restrained him if she wanted to.
Rain reached for him again, but he sidestepped her. Rain was pretty agile and springy, but with him being able to read her mind he could stay a step ahead of her. Rain looked like she was about to jump again, but then she smiled. "It's time…"
She began taking in a deep breath, and Dusk kept his guard up. Part of the crazy plan that Mei had told her was that she was supposed to scream and signal for her to grab the flag from behind. This was nuts for two reasons.
The first one being that Mei wasn't anywhere near them right now, and the second was because Dusk didn't have the flag.
"NOW MEI! DO IT NOW!"
He voice boomed, echoing through the air and most of the island.
It was loud. So loud in fact that Dawn heard it all the way from the castle gates. He turned his head back towards where the voice was coming from, and Mei grew a devious look on her face as she jumped at him again. "Got you!"
Dawn suddenly moved back and out of reach. "Yeah, not you… what?" When he jumped back, he hadn't realized he'd gone right through a portal.
He popped out where Rain and Dusk were. All three siblings looked confused. Mei had told Rain that Mei would pop out of the portal when Rain opened it. But why was it their brother? Rain snapped out of the daze first however, reaching out and snatching the flag from her brother's wasit.
"I got it!" she cheered.
"What?!"
"No freaking away!"
"Told you we'd win," Mei said, holding the flag up proudly.
Dawn and Dusk both scowled at her. "You didn't do anything. All you did was use the fact that Dawn and Rain were airheads," Dusk argued.
"Hey!"
"First of all, if Rain is such an airhead then what does it say about you, a person who can LITERALLY read minds, that she got past you. Secondly, the loss is entirely your fault for thinking you'd be better than us. I may not have your fancy god genes or whatever, but that doesn't mean you can underestimate me. Finally, if you boys are so upset, then Rain and I would be happy to beat you two again after the picnic is done."
The twins both rolled their eyes at her, while Oberon hummed. He honestly didn't think his great-grandsons were going to lose, so he was rather surprised. "Well, take this as a learning experience. Cunning can be just as important as raw power or talent," he said.
Mei nodded. "That's right. Would anyone care for a celebratory tea party?" she asked, wanting to cement her victory with some tea.
"I want skittles in mind!" Rain said, raising her hand.
"I hate tea…" Dawn asked.
"Tea sucks…" Dusk complained.
Mei rolled her eyes. "Sore losers."
Mei took a sip from her tea as she and the others sat around the table. Rain stuffed her face with the small cakes they had sitting out, but then Dawn tried to reach for one Mei smacked his hand. "Ah, cake is for winners…" she said.
Dawn scowled at her. "You didn't win! Rain won!"
"Same team."
"She carried you," Dusk argued. "We're still better."
Mei shot him a look. "If you were the best, you would've won." She offered Oberon a cup of tea and a piece of cake. "Here you are lord Oberon."
"Thank you little one."
"Hey! How come he gets cake?!" Dawn argued.
"Because he didn't make me angry by questioning our win!" Mei snapped back.
"And a clever win it was."
"Thanks grandpa!" Rain said, smiling.
Mei smiled and nodded. "Why thank you. That means a lot coming from someone as important as you."
"Traitor!" Dawn shouted.
"We are so gonna win the next round!" Dusk snapped.
