Chapter 4 of Spear and Shield

"I'm going to send you to hell with a smile on my face."-Kane Stone Spear Hero.
It's been about five days since Kane's little fiasco with the troll, he's been taking it slow for the time being to try and let himself recover from the status effect. Kane still does some jobs mostly harvesting and collecting jobs to ensure he has cash flow unfortunately due to him taking it slow his leveling has slowed down drastically.
Kane is sitting at a table in his room experimenting, he decides to sort of follow Naofumi in making potions but instead of making HP potions and medicines, he decides to go for potions that give buffs and resistances, while he still makes HP potions due to how much cheaper it is compared to buying them he still mostly focuses his efforts on experimenting. 'So I think I can fuck with the alchemy system just like you could fuck with the alchemy system in Skyrim, I'm going to make me the most OP potions to ever exist in this world.'
Kane continues making the potions with his crafting menu, while he waits for the potion to finish making he decides to check his status to see if anything changed.

'It's looking better then before at the very least but I still rather not have it but oh well.' He looks at the timer for his potion creation. 'ugh a few more minutes, god the waiting fucking sucks. Guess I'll just go through my status and check all the new Spears and skills I got.'

Silver tongued Spear Hero: Due to your easy going and friendly personality people can't help but find you charismatic making it easier to convince people to your side whether that be making friends, making deals or making someone give up information they wouldn't normally give, this is less effective on certain people.
Quick study: You were always a quick study when it came to things but now that the Waves are upon the world and how it's your duty to save lives and to also stop the Waves you gotten even better at picking things up as such you can learn and performs things easier that would take others hours perhaps even days.

Kane rolls his eyes at the little comment left behind his Spear "Well find me someone that does know how to use a Spear." The Spear doesn't react but he knows it's grumbling in some shape or form.
Royal Guard Slime Spear-Slippery Agility: Increase spellcaster agility by 25% when activated, drains SP while active.
Royal Guard Slime Spear-Seismic Leap: Jump into the air and hit the ground with a seismic force which deals physical damage, this skill becomes even more powerful the higher you are as such when using this skill falling damage is heavily reduced.
Latex Spear-Protective Seal: Protect yourself with a seal which can ward off poison and diseases, drains SP while active.
Phone Spear-Spear Flash: Emit a bright and sudden light from your Spear to temporarily blind your foes.
Phone Spear-Spear Light: Emits a constant light.
Phone Spear-Spear Photo: Takes a photo which can be magically recreated.
Speaker Spear-Spear Deafen: Emit a sudden loud noise to deafen opponent.
Speaker Spear/Headphone Spear-Spear Player: Play music, either random songs or specific ones through your Spear either out loud or so you can only hear it.
Mom's lessons (Cooking): Your mother taught you a few things to help you in life, one of those things was knowing how to cook as such the food you make is extremely tasty, it also gives boosts depending on what type of ingredients is used.
Mom's lessons (Counter): Your mother taught you a few things to help you in life, one of those things was how to counter grabs/tackles. When an opponent grabs you they'll be surprised to see at how hard it is to hold you in place, as such escaping or even countering grabs/tackles is easier.
Mom's lessons (Hold): Your mother taught you a few things to help you in life, one of those things was how to grab people in holds. Opponents have a hard time getting out of your grasp whether it be man or troll. This skill only works for humanoid opponents.
Adult Cave Troll Heart Spear-Berserk: Increases Attack and Magical Attacks by 30% but suffer a 30% reduction to Physical Defence while active.
Adult Cave Troll Finger Spear-Lance Toss: Summon a large lance to impale your foes this lance can skewer multiple enemies and stick them to walls until the lance disappears.
Adult Cave Troll Toe Spear-Stand Your Ground: Activating this skill requires you to be perfectly still when doing so all stats gain a buff apart from your Agility stat which will gain a reduction due to your feet being planted into the ground, this skill is broken when moved either intentionally or not. This skill drains SP while active.
Warrior Usapil Foot Spear-Spear Jump: Charging a jump causes you to jump extremely high, the more you charge the higher you jump.
Kane nods his head at the new skill 'It may seem really situational, but if I can combine it with Seismic Leap then it will probably become one of my most used moves.'
Warrior Usapil Tooth Spear-Rebounding Thrust: When striking an opponent with this skill it rebounds straight out, letting you thrust continuously. The longer you use this skill the more expensive the SP cost becomes.
Butcher Spear-Harvest Monster: Harvest a monster for all of their materials, this costs SP.
Novice Buff Potion Brewer: You specialize in making buff potions, as such all buff potions when made by you are improved depending on your skill.
A notification pops up which stops Kane from reading onward. Kane pulls out the new potion he made, he takes a look at it's effects.
Strange Potion: +20% to all stats, Medium HP regeneration, Low fire resistance. Effect duration 45 minutes.
Kane's face splits into an evil grin 'Unlimited Powaaaa.' Kane quickly puts the potion into his inventory. 'Alright so I can actually break the system a bit but it's gonna be a long road before I make my magnum opus.' Kane stands up, excited at the experiment going well and finally being well enough to take more serious jobs. Kane begins to leave and goes straight to the guild to pick some jobs.
10 minutes later.
He arrives at the guild, he walks in going straight for the job board and checking what quests are up, quite a few are either considered too dangerous for his current condition or too easy to give him any worthwhile rewards but one takes his fancy.
Exterminating the pack: A group of wolves have built a den in the forest this would normally not be an issue but a few dire wolves have been spotted amongst the pack meaning the pack has a Dire Wolf Alpha we ask for any brave adventurers to assist us in exterminating the pack before they can do any harm to the civilians near the forest.
The quest continues on about the general area of the den, how the pack must be hunted at night as that is when they are all together. Kane takes the bounty, while also taking a few simple harvesting jobs. He goes to receptionist to activate the jobs, "Spear Hero, I see you're taking a bounty out on the wolves." Kane nods to which the receptionist sighs "Stay safe out there Spear Hero." The receptionist stamps the jobs and passes them to Kane.
"I always stay safe, well apart from when it comes to trolls but other then that my track record is great." she shakes her head to which Kane smiles. "Anyway see you later." He leaves the guild, deciding to kill some time he checks out the market place browsing the items, to see if anything catches his interest.
He eventually decides to enter Erhard's shop to talk to Erhard, asking for tips and the best materials for gear the two keep talking; Erhard mentions a bunch of villages he could check out for XP and materials, Kane to Erhard's annoyance asks him if he can smash some of the metal with a hammer, Erhard response was 20 silvers per hit. Kane shakes his head "Not worth it anyway, I gotta go Erhard need to complete my jobs, peace." Erhard crosses his arms.
"See you later Spear Kid, try and bring back some high quality monster materials if you want to make new armour." Kane gives a thumbs up as leaves the shop and proceeds to go about his day.
20 minutes later.
Kane picks up another plant but to his aggravation he hears rustling to his left to which he sighs and prepares a skill and as he expected a Usapil jumps out of the bush trying to attack Kane who huffs "Spear Toss." To the Usapil's horror, a massive Spear impales it while mid-air killing it instantly.

'God these fuckers can be so annoying, oh well at least I got something to cook later.' Kane moves towards the Usapil and activates his Harvest Monster skills to cut up the Usapil perfectly. Kane goes back to harvesting plants until the sunsets.
A few hours later.
It's finally become night and Kane is already moving to the location of the wolf pack to start his extermination. He moves through the forest keeping an open ear listening for anything, he keeps walking forward to the supposed location of the wolf's den. He enters a clearing with a hill that has a hole in the side. 'Is this the place? What does a Wolf Den even look like?' Kane hears the grass around him being disturbed by something walking on them.
Kane looks around to see yellow eyes glowing in the dark, he slowly pulls out the stat potion he made earlier and quickly downs it, he begins to walk closer to the wolf's den to try and provoke the wolves into attacking. A few wolves jump out blocking Kane's way to the den to which he counters with a skill
"Spear Toss!"
The large Spear impales one of the wolves straight into the den, this caused all the other wolves to intervene due to the den suffering damage.
One wolf pounces going straight for Kane's jugular to which he responds with another skill
"Rebounding Thrust!"
Kane steps the wolf three times in mid-air but due to it's momentum it's body still crashes into him, stumbling him a bit: Before the wolves can act upon the opportunity Kane uses Slippery Agility and runs towards the wolves directly behind him charging up a skill as he runs.
"Spear Jump!" He jumps about ten feet into the air to which he quickly uses another skill.
"Seismic Leap!"
The impact kills two out of the three wolves to which Kane follows up with a slash to finish off the last one.
The wolves become more wary due to him killing so many of them without suffering any injuries but they seem to suddenly become more confident, Kane is confused at the random surge of confidence until he sees a group of large wolves each one about as large as tiger. 'Jesus those are some big wolves, bet the Alpha is massive.' he waits for the wolves to make the first move, unsure of how strong a dire wolf really is.
As if it wasn't bad enough another wolf comes forward but this wolf in particular is about the size of a bear maybe even bigger

The Alpha stares at Kane and howls
Alpha Dire Wolf uses Rally!
All the wolves around the Alpha seems to become energized. Kane grumbles and activates Hold Your Ground. Some of the wolves decide to charge thinking that with numbers and the boost given to them by the Alpha the intruder would be easy to slay, Kane does his combo with Spear Jump and Seismic Leap, killing the wolves that attempted to pounce on him.
Kane decides to charge to try and make sure the wolves can't group up, one of the dire wolves decide to meet Kane's charge
"Rebounding Thrust!"
he stabs the dire wolf multiple times but doesn't kill it an average wolf comes in to help the dire wolf but he slices the two of them. While Kane is preoccupied with the wolves, the Alpha charges forward trying to knock Kane to the ground to which he responds with a dodge but is pounced upon by a dire wolf trying to go for his jugular. Kane shoves the Spear into the wolf's mouth piercing it's brain, the wolf slumps dead. He tosses the wolf towards the Alpha to try and give him some time to recover but the Alpha hits the corpse with it's paw. The wolves surround Kane, 'I need to kill em quickly.'
Kane uses Berserk and charges the dire wolves to try and cut down the Alpha's pack. He kills one of the wolves before the others back off, all that remains of the Alpha's pack is the dire wolves. Kane prepares to kill the dire wolves quickly to ensure he isn't outnumbered by the pack but before he can try the Alpha pounces at him to which he sidesteps and slashes the Alpha as it flies by.
The wolves group up together, only 4 are left; the Alpha and three dire wolves. Kane charges up his combo to try and lower the pack's numbers.
"Spear Jump!" he leaps about 12 feet into the air.
"Seismic Leap!"
The Alpha dodges and while the dire wolves try to dodge they were too slow and died from impact or were severely injured making it easy to finish them off for Kane. The Alpha stares at him with rage in its eyes due to how most of it's pack was killed. The two circle each other, he charges Deafen and runs toward the Alpha which gets into a stance ready to pounce upon him.
"Spear Deafen!"
The Alpha whimpers at the sudden noise, Kane slams into the Alpha.
"Rebounding Thrust!"
The Alpha suffers 6 stabs from Kane before trying to pounce on him but due to the Alpha being disorientated it is easily dodged, Kane punishes the failed pounce with a slash to the Alpha's back leg. The Alpha shakes off it's disorientation and hits Kane with it's paw. Kane quickly recoveries and stands up, The Alpha charges at him taking the opportunity presented to it.
"Spear Jump!"
He hops upward and lands directly on the Alpha's back, he quickly turns himself around before the Alpha tries to buck off Kane but he responds to the bucks by repeatedly stabbing the wolf in the neck. The Alpha's struggles get weaker and weaker as Kane stabs it over and over again until finally the Alpha stops and drops to the ground, whatever life was left in it is quickly bleeding out.

Kane puts the leftover monster materials in his inventory some for Naofumi and maybe some for his armour down the line, opens his skills to see if anything has been unlocked.
Alpha Dire Wolf Tooth Spear-Spear Chomp: The Spear transform into a wolf's head that chomps on it's opponent, this skill costs SP.
Alpha Dire Wolf Tooth Spear-Rally: This skill buffs your party's stats, depending on how much SP is used.
Alpha Dire Wolf Heart Spear-Heart of the Pack: Your presence gives allies a sense of confidence boosting their Attack and Agility stats.
Kane nods his head at the new skills. 'Not too bad honestly, shame that those two skills needs a party to be useful.' He walks to the entrance of the wolf's den and activates Lance Toss to block the main entrance of the den. He begins to make his way back to town to give in the jobs. He continues walking until he hears laughing and what sounds like chains.
"Come on you dirty demi-humans I want to hear you scream!"
Kane begins to quietly walk towards the sounds to hear what's going on, to his horror and disgust he finds a group of children in a cage with three men, one of them standing right next to the cage and mocking them. Anger fills Kane at the sight and he walk forward "Hey! Leave those kids alone you sick fuck." The three men all turn with surprise but for the man next to the cage his surprise turns into a fowl grin.
"Ho? Looks boys we got ourselves a young lad getting involved in our business, maybe ya should leave kid if you know what's good for you."
Kane scoffs and walk closer "And leave those poor kids alone with a demented fuck like you? Not happening."
The leader shrugs and pull out a mace the other two men pull out short swords. "Well don't say I didn't warn you." The men with short swords charge at Kane raising their blades to cut him down, Kane blocks one with his Spear which shocks the swordsman at the revelation of him being the Spear Hero but the other one slashes him, Kane responds with a sidekick to the swordsman's chest knocking the air out of his lungs making him drop to the ground. The other swordsman grabs in a bear hold leaving him open to attack, the leader steps forward coming closer to Kane. "You should of listen to me and left while you could kid, now we get to have our fun with you."
The swordsman holding Kane speaks up. "Uhhh boss?"
The leader gives the swordsman an annoyed look. "What?"
The man continues. "This is the Spear Hero are we allowed to kill him?"
The leader shrugs. "Anyone asks say it was self-defence and he tried stealing my property."
Kane starts laughing to the leader's annoyance. "What's so funny?" nearly standing face to face with each other.
He gives the leader a grin. "You activated my trap card dipshit." Kane jumps up and kicks the leader in the face with both feet, the leader falls to ground screaming in pain due to the most likely broken nose. The sudden weight and force makes the swordsman holding Kane fall onto his back letting go of him, Kane while on his back quickly takes the opportunity and elbows the person holding him in the head, he gets upright and proceeds to pummel the swordsman on the ground until he falls unconscious.
The person he kicked early starts to get up and finds both his leader and his comrade on the ground with the stranger repeatedly hitting his comrade in the face to which he abruptly stops and looks at him with an angered look. The two stare at each other until the other swordsman decides it's not worth it and runs into the dark forest. Kane shakes his head and stands up and walk towards the leader who's on one knee struggling to stand as blood spews out of his face.
"Why the fuck is one of the damn Heroes getting involved in my business?" The leader speaks with venom and anger in his tone.
Kane keeps walking forwards to the leader "I'm getting involved because a group of innocent children are being tormented." he kicks the leader again in the centre of his face, if his nose wasn't broken before it most definitely was now, blood covers the leader's face; his nose is bent in horrible angle, his orbital socket is shattered, and he seems to have also just lost missing a few teeth if the bleeding gums were to go by anything. "Man seeing you get thrown in jail for abuse of children is gonna really make my day."
The leader guffaws at what he said "HAHAHA You're an idiotic goody two shoes, they're demi-humans, me having fun with my property isn't illegal you fool."
Kane's eyes open widely at this "W-What?"
The leader laughs even harder "You're a fucking idiot, once I get back to town I'll be sure to tell the law on how you assaulted me and tried to take my property and once you get thrown in jail I'll move on with my life with my property and there's nothing you can do about."
Kane gains a dark look and his grip on his Spear tightens, he walks to the leader "What are you gonna do oh so legendary Hero kill me? HA look at you acting all heroic, saving the filthy demi-scum, you're too much of a bloody 'Hero' to kill me." Kane grabs his by the collar, he shoves the Spear right into the leader's throat. The leader's eyes widen in shock and fear as he begins to choke on his blood he holds onto the Spear keeping it in, trying to desperately cling to life.
Kane gives the leader a scowl. "I've never killed anyone before but for some reason I'm pretty sure I won't be too torn up about having killed you, hope you're ready to make some new friends in hell." He rips his Spear out of the leader's throat which causes his throat to gush with blood, Kane stands up and begins walking to the cage while the leader begins hacking up blood, making wet gurgle noises as his esophagus fills with his blood, his struggles eventually stop as the lack of oxygen makes him pass out then a few moments later die.
Kane walks up to the cage and sees four children in rags with chains around their hands and ankles, one of the children is unconscious laying down in the cage, he notices a weird purple mark on their chests. Three of the four children stare at him with fear in their eyes but with an undercurrent of hope at the Hero, he sighs "stand back kids I don't want you to get hurt." The children all take a step back from the cage door while Kane raises his Spear and thrusts at the lock, to his surprise breaks the door in one thrust leaving it easy to open.
Kane enters the cage and walks up to the children, he gets to one knee to look at the chains on their hands and ankles. He notices a hole for a key in their chains he looks to the leader's corpse "I'm guessing that fuck has got the key on him." The children nod to which he sighs, he leaves the cage to check the leader corpse 'Man either he's decomposing really quickly or he's always smelled this bad.' He finds the key in the leader's leather pouch. He walks back to the cage and frees the slaves but he begins to become concerned at the unconscious one who had, she looked like she has fox ears but due to how matted her hair was Kane couldn't really tell. "Hey kid come on wake up I'm getting you out of here." He grabs the sleeping girl. "hey come on kid it's time to wake up."
The girl feels extremely cold to Kane's touch he tries to check for the girl's pulse but feels nothing. Kane deludes himself into thinking he did it wrong and with a slight hesitation puts his head on the girl's chest to try and hear a heartbeat. The silence is deafening, Kane keeps hoping to hear a heart but to his growing horror it's a constant dead silence. Kane puts the girl's body down and looks at the others and shakes his head, they look down in sadness some begin to tear up. "Look at me." The continue to look at the ground "Look at me." They slowly look up and Kane looks them all in the eye "I won't let any more of you die, I promise I'll free you all, okay." They all slowly nod one of them coughs as she nods, Kane leaves the cage helping the slaves down, he was just about to pick up the poor girl's body before he hears groaning he turns around and sees the swordsman he knocked out slowly coming to, he leaves the girl's body for the time and walks to the man slowly waking up. To the man's misery he wakes up to Kane standing over him who picks him up by the collar.
"Well good morning starshine." Kane has a grin on his face but he's clearly angered. "So you mind telling me what that purple shit on their chests is, or do I need to beat you again?"
The man gulps in fear "I-It's the slave crest they all have it."
Kane hands clench around his collar "How do I get rid of it?"
The man quickly responds "Y-You can get rid of by using holy water."
"Where do I get that, I'm guessing the church?"
The man nods to which Kane strikes him, knocking him out again after answering his questions. He walks back to the children. "Let's get you guys somewhere you can rest, do any of you need help walking back?" The one slave girl coughs and raises her hand. Kane smiles at her and walks to her, he gets one knee "come on kid I'll let you ride my shoulders." The girl comes closer and hesitates.
"A-Are you sure?" She said with a meek voice. Kane nods to which she comes closer and climbs his back, once she's climbed Kane stand to which she holds onto his head for support.
"You good up there?" She nods "Alright how about the rest of you, are you sure you can all walk?" They both shake their head to no-one's surprise since they're all skin and bones. Kane finds a way to carry all three of them as well as carrying the dead slave girl. He begins to walk back home with both his arms preoccupied with carrying the slaves.
50 minutes later.
The walk back to the town was to Kane's relief uneventful, he takes the three children to his room and lets them sleep in his bed "I'll be right back I need to go give this girl a proper burial. What's her name?" The three look down.
"We don't know her name, I don't think even she knew her name." Kane looks at the girl's body with sorrow, he sighs.
"R-Right I'll think of name up for her then I guess, you three get into bed and rest I'll be back." The kids all nod and get comfortable and try to go to sleep. Kane walks through the town while holding the girl's body, the streets are mostly dead only a few people walking around some guards and some walking along the street either to get to home or work, he decides to go to Erhard to ask for a shovel or something to help with the burial.
Kane knocks on the store's door while holding the body one handed, Erhard opens the door his eyes aggravated which quickly turns to surprise and confusion at seeing Kane holding a extremely skinny demi-human girl. "Spear Kid? What's going on?"
Kane looks at him with a sad look. "Erhard I need a shovel, I gotta dig a grave for this girl."
Erhard's eyes widen even further in shock and nods his head and lets him into his shop, Erhard goes into the back to look for a shovel while Kane stands at the counter. Erhard comes back with a shovel and he hands it to Kane "You need a hand in digging her a grave Stone?" Kane shakes his head.
"Nah I'll do this myself, let you get back to sleep but do you know any good spots for a burial?"
Erhard looks at Kane for a bit before sighing "There's a hill about ten minutes north-west if you leave at the north exit of the town, a good spot for burial there." Kane nods his head and leaves the shop saying goodbye to Erhard.
10 minutes later.
Kane arrives at the spot the hill has a tree at the top, the spot is extremely beautiful Kane would stop to take in the sights if the situation wasn't so depressing, he wasn't expecting to bury a dead slave girl and he wasn't expecting to have to take care of three slaves who have been abused and starved. Kane finds a good spot and places down the girl gently, he begins to dig a hole.
30 minutes later.
Kane has finished digging a small hole, Kane decides to pull out his red jacket from his inventory to cover the girl as he buries her. He places her in the hole and kneels over her grave. "Apparently you don't know your name so… I was thinking of calling you Evelyn, although we've never even meet each other before I feel like I failed you in some way." he sighs "I-I'm sorry kid you had your entire life ahead of you and you never got to experience it so from the bottom of my heart I'm sorry." Kane begins to fill the hole back up, after filling the hole he gets some stones to start placing them on her grave.
He begins to walk home on the way back he enters the church to get some holy water for the slave crests, as he enters he walks forward he never actually entered the church he passed by it thinking on how big it looked on the outside. The floor looks to be made of high quality marble or something along the lines Kane's thoughts are interrupted. "Greetings Spear Hero it is rather late but we are always willing to help one of the three Heroes." A group of nuns approach Kane.
Kane looks at the nuns. "I need 4 bottles of holy water please sisters."
The nuns bow. "Of course but you will need to pay 80 silvers for 4 bottles, Sir Spear Hero."
Kane counts out 85 silvers and passes it to the nuns. "That's 80 silvers and 5 extra as an apology for coming in at such late time."
"We are pleased to serve one of the Heroes, do not feel guilt for asking as for aid." One of the nuns turns to the other one and speaks to her, the nun bows and leaves to get the holy water. They wait for the nun to come with the holy water which after a while she does come back with 4 bottles of water and even a bag strangely enough, the nun hands the items to Kane to which he takes with a thank you.
Kane takes the bottles and put it into his inventory, he opens the bag and looks inside to find… sand? "Uhhh I'm not sure what this is suppose to be, sisters."
The nun looks at Kane "It's sand from the Dragon Hourglass."
Kane nods his head, acting as if he understood. "Uh thanks? Anyway have a goodnight sisters."
The nuns all bow. "Goodbye Sir Spear Hero."
Kane turns around to leave having gotten what he wants.
A few minutes later.
Kane enters his room and looks straight to his bed to see all the children still asleep, he pulls out a chair to sit down, as he sits he pulls out one of the holy waters to absorb and the bag of sand weirdly enough.

'Well I'm not too far off level 40 but God this shit with me having to shout skills names just to use it getting really fucking annoying, the thought of having to shout teleport and probably the name of the location just to use the skill ugh, I need to find a way to stop saying skills out loud makes what I'm doing so obvious.' Kane grumbles and turns off his status and tries to get comfortable in the seat trying to get to sleep, he closes his eyes but has difficulties due to the fucked up day that today turned out to be.
The end of chapter 4, Kane's now seen dark side of the new world he's in I mean sure he already knows about slaves due to Naofumi but to actually see one dead and the others tormented it's a different thing entirely.
