Chapter 39. The Hokage
The Hokage stood with a kunai pressed against his throat, as the Kazekage ripped his face off revealing Orochimaru, "I told you, you should have picked a fifth," Orochimaru sniggered, and yelped as Nami sank teeth and claw into his hand he pulled away dragging the cat with him as he swung his hand round hoping to dislodge the feline. With a rather violent swing Nami was sent flying skidding across the ground landing inside the barrier, appearing around them. Nami darted forwards as Hikaru ran towards the barrier, sending an icy glare back stopped the ANBU short as the barrier formed in front of him. The dull thud, thud, drew his attention upwards as he recognized Naruto's broken staff ends sticking out of the barrier he turned noticing Naruto on the roof opposite a black bird flying off into the sky as the Naruto on the roof ran over the edge out into the village splitting into three as he fell.
Hikaru's attention was drawn back to the barrier as he heard sizzling, looking up to where the staffs were sticking out he noticed flames flickering at the points touch the barrier. Hikaru pooled water into his hand, glad that he had mastered that technique quickly pulling it into a dragon which he sent up to slam into the weak spot that Naruto had created. Orochimaru looked up at the barrier frowning, a mere genin should not be able to do the things that Naruto did.
"Would it please you to know that have chosen a fifth? Or would it strike a nerve that it once again isn't you?" the Third smirked pulling his hat and robes off covering Nami's approach and revealing his old battle armour underneath.
Orochimaru snarled, "As long as it's someone better than the last, he didn't last very long now, did he?" Orochimaru smirked glad that he had hit a nerve. "Don't you think the world is a bit dull stuck at a standstill like this, a stopped windmill isn't worth watching at all is it?"
"Passed on my long windedness to you as well I see." The third sighed.
Orochimaru's smirk dropped, as he ripped off the Kazekage robes turning to face the waiting Hokage, "you should have killed me when you had the chance." He stretched his head up twisting it around his eyes fixating on Hikaru as he attacked the barrier. "Look at Hikaru out there trying so valiantly to get in, how beautiful he is even in anger, much like your little fox, so beautiful yet those whisker marks, such a shame, he's almost as beautiful as Sasuke." Orochimaru chuckled, watching the old man's face warp into disgust. "Kuku I wonder who's better Little Prince or Little Fox?" Orochimaru licked his lips.
The third throw a shuriken in anger running through hand signs at speed that was equally matched by his former student. The single shuriken he had thrown multiplied with the use of the shuriken kage bushin no jutsu hurtling towards Orochimaru as he finished his own set of hand seals. "Summoning: Impure World Incarnation." Orochimaru counted as one coffin slowly followed by another rose from the roof. The third's eyes hardened, knowing he had to stop the third coffin from rising at any cost.
Hikaru screamed out when he recognized the jutsu that Orochimaru was using, a forbidden jutsu unique to the leaf.
The shuriken that the third had sent towards Orochimaru embedded into the coffins, the third failing to rise fully, and being hit by more shuriken, which was lucky for him. The eerie creaking of the coffins drew the Third's attention, as well as the ANBU team that had just arrived next to Hikaru, Hikaru frowned spotting the older cat masked ninja, there were three in rotation, Yugao, this captain, (Otomatsu he thought the name briefly) and the mask currently sat on Naruto's shelf, each with slightly different markings but he still frowned seeing the cat masks around. The coffins fell open revealing the old battered bodies of the first and second Hokage. The red armour of the first was dusty and rusted with age, as was the blue armour of the second holiday.
"It can't be the Lords?" Otomatsu gasped.
"Who are the lords?" the young ANBU with a green square over his mask asked.
"You're kidding right?" Hikaru turned his attention to the young ANBU.
"They're the first and Second Hokages, the people that built this village." Otomatsu stated.
"And the forbidden jutsu that Orochimaru is using," Hikaru added.
Inside the barrier the former Hokages were getting reacquainted with their former pupil.
"It's been a long time, Monkey." The taller grey haired ninja spoke.
"You've grown old." The one with long dark hair sighed.
"YOU FILTHY SNAKE!" Hikaru shouted another water dragon forming as the first dissipated around them.
"Kuku," Orochimaru laughed watching the Third's face.
"I am sorry Hikaru," the third turned his head glancing at Hikaru before returning his attention to the former Hokages. "I'm sorry that this happened, please prepare to be defeated." The two Hokage looked at each other then slowly turned to see the ANBU attacking the weak point of the barrier, cocking their heads as something struck them about him.
"Did he say sorry Hikaru?" the first turned to the second, having a private conversation with his brother.
"Indeed but we can only wonder why?" the second frowned.
Orochimaru pushed the battered and empty coffin's aside, stepping forwards drawing the former Hokages attention.
"Edo Tenshi, the forbidden Jutsu I created and used by this youngster to summon, must be quite something." The second acknowledged looking back at Orochimaru.
"But if that's so then that would mean that Sarutobi we have to fight against you." The first answered.
"What are you signing old man it won't help you? Now I've had enough of the old time chatter, let's get this started shall we." Orochimaru brought out two kunai with tags attached.
"No matter the way the world changes there is always fighting."
"Making tools of the dead." The third sighed finishing his signed message. "Nothing good will come of playing with time."
"Don't just stand there, break that weak point Naruto created!" Hikaru shouted, moving his mask to the side of his head.
The ANBU team jumped forwards, one of them throwing themselves at the barrier, hitting the staff with his shoulder as well as the barrier and bursting into flames.
"Why do you think I was using jutsus?" Hikaru sighed, turning as Orochimaru stepped forwards planting two kunai into the backs on the former Hokages' heads.
"Shall we begin?" Orochimaru chuckled.
"He looks like..." the First didn't finish his sentence as the tag on the kunai took over his consciousness.
Orochimaru moulded chakra returning the two former Hokage's body's to how they were before they died, their skin steamed as the cracks and decay burned away revealing new flesh underneath, the rust flaked down around them, their armour becoming like new, regaining vitality, while losing their personalities.
"Kukukukuku! The pleasure of hurting a former mentor, I thought we'd share in this final experience. You won't be walking away from this battle old man." Orochimaru licked his lips hungrily. "Maybe I'll find a use for Naruto after all." He laughed.
The Third shot forwards charging at the two former Hokages, bringing his hands together running through seals taking a deep breath and exhaling a fire jutsu that ran forwards like a wall. The second ran through hand seals creating a water barrier, exhaling the water from his mouth and spraying it out at the flames as they advanced towards the two. They watched as the water rose up twisting and turning into a dragon bearing down on them. Orochimaru turned his head seeing Hikaru controlling the dragon.
"Clever, getting the Prince to take control, shall we see which of you is better, the original or the pretender?" Orochimaru chuckled, as Tobirama the Second Hokage switched hand signs wresting control of the water dragon away from Hikaru and turning it into the water dragon missile jutsu sending that back towards the third. The third countered with an earth jutsu creating a wall of mud as Hikaru failed to control that attack. The water hit the mud wall and splashed out covering the surface of the rooftop. Hikaru moved his hands forming a sphere of water around the first's feet quickly rising up and surrounding him in a water prison, as the first began running through seals for his wood release jutsu. The second sphere rising up around the second's feet, and staying there as the second fought for control, the second smirked pushing the water down the First's body freeing his hands as he finished his jutsu.
"Mokuton: Deep Forest Creation." Saplings sprouted from the ground growing upwards turning into trees, as they grew.
The third created another mudslide barrier spewing it out in front of him attempting to stop the trees. The trees however grew through the mud, but the third had already moved onto summoning Enma. "Summoning: Monkey King Enma!" Who appeared as the third got entangled in the trees; a streak of yellow caught his attention as it weaved through the legs of the former Hokages, darting up into the trees as the tags started to burn through. Enma climbed up into the tree, looking down at Orochimaru and the former Hokages.
"You should have killed him when you had the chance." Enma growled.
"I have been told that many times recently." the third sighed. "It is my biggest regret that I plan on making amends today."
"A little too late, but finally you've gotten past the attachment to your student."
"There will be a lot of hard things I have to get past today, now Enma Transform!" the third ordered.
Enma transformed into a staff made from adamantine, smashing through the branches constricting the Thirds movements. Orochimaru chuckled to himself tilting his head back, opening his mouth so a snake was exposed; the snake opened its own mouth as an object moved up its throat, the rear end of a sword handle appeared. Orochimaru reached up grabbing the handle and pulling the sword out of the snake, as though it was the sheathe.
"Even in this form the blade of the Kusanagi is going to hurt."
"I know old friend but this must be done." The third jumped down swinging Enma.
He flew over the heads of the first and second Hokages both turning to watch him. The water rose up behind the second and formed a tidal wave as Hikaru controlled it sending it into the backs of the two Hokages, the tags Nami had planted exploding taking off a leg from each of the former leaders, Orochimaru's eyes widen as Naruto appeared out of nowhere kicking the first into the second as the wave hit them all. There was a shink as Enma made contact with the Kusanagi, his head pulling out of the staff as he reared up to bite Orochimaru's throat. Naruto floated to the top of the wave trusting Hikaru to keep him separate from the two Hokages as he once again held them in a water prison; Naruto spun two kunai into his hand as the wave dissipated and he was lowered to the ground, he turned using the water as a spring board aiming for Orochimaru.
Naruto was over taken by a blue blur and red blur, the former Hokages had broken out of the water prison heading to intercept the Third. The Third felt Enma being pulled backwards The second had grabbed the end of Enma and yanked backwards sending the third into the path of his brother who kicked away into the moving form of Naruto. The impact of the Third hitting Naruto sent them both back together they skidded and hit the roof of the building rolling back, Naruto grimaced in pain.
"You're bony grandpa," he coughed before popping out of existence.
The third looked up from his crumpled heap on the floor slowly righting himself and pulling up into a standing position, looking at the spot on the Hokages' legs where the explosive tags had been placed, watching the legs reassemble before his eyes.
"This isn't like you," Enma answered from the staff.
"You're getting heavy old friend." The third spoke fondly, his stare hardening as realized what he would have to do.
"Using others to help you how very unlike you, and so disappointing too, what happened to the man that was known as the Professor, for knowing and being able to use the all the jutsu that exist in the leaf village?"
"He grew old." The third admitted.
The third let go of Enma moving him to lean against the wall of earth and trees behind him, as he placed his hands together gathering chakra.
"My you have, haven't you?" Orochimaru laughed. "It's so pitiful, you who were hailed as a god of the shinobi cannot defeat old age." Orochimaru clawed his face, pulling it off much as he had done in the forest when he faced off against the rookie nine. Underneath revealed a youthful face with feminine like qualities, large round eyes, perfect skin and a fuller face than before all softer features than he had originally been sporting.
The ANBU team outside the barrier paused in the attack of the barrier confusing showing in their stances. Hikaru panted staring up at the staffs sticking out of the barrier one good hit would send them flying inside smashing the barrier. He looked back at the ANBU team and back to the weak point, glancing up over to the Third who had begun gathering his chakra.
Orochimaru chuckled. "Is it really that hard to tell, it's still me, Orochimaru."
"He's finally done it." Enma's voiced sounded from the staff.
"It's been more than ten years since I left this village, I suffered quite a bit.
"You terrifying inhumane creature. One of the reasons I didn't choose you to become the Fourth was because of your twisted ideology."
"Come now Little Prince, I think I'm almost as beautiful as you in this form." Orochimaru chuckled as the water rose up around him whipping out to slash across his face, creating a nice open wound. "This immortality jutsu is where you anchor your spirit to this world forever, basically it's a reincarnation spell where you find a new body, enter it with your spirit, and gain possession of it. The only reason I disguised myself as my old self was the sense of nostalgia I wanted you to feel. To grow old and pitiful as you have done, what a destitute waste, when I look at you I am glad I followed this path, now you will die here and I will obtain a youthful, beautiful more entertaining body. The leaf, really are full of potential. Like I said if it wasn't for his whisker marks and the beast sealed inside I think Naruto would have great potential." Orochimaru licked his lips, sending the hair on Hikaru's neck to stand on end.
"A reincarnation jutsu that steals the body of another and makes the spirit immortal, huh, what number body is that one?"
"The second one I believe, I intend to possess Sasuke after he grows up a bit more, and he'll only be perfect for my tastes for so long." Orochimaru sighed. "But I want you cursing fate and regretting your life as you die so this face will have to do, staring down at you as lie there in a pool of your own blood." Orochimaru turned his face back into his original face.
The first moved his hands much like Hikaru had been doing the rooftop rumbled as the trees exploded out creating more and with dense foliage, making it hard for those outside the barrier to see inside. Hikaru closed his eyes concentrating, taking calming breaths as he sought out those inside the barrier with his chakra.
"You mustn't let your guard down now Sensei!" Orochimaru chuckled. "You always were too soft."
The Third stood behind Enma who had created a prison surrounding the Hokage protecting him. "What's the matter with you? You aren't yourself."
"Sorry."
"Sorry, you've never been like this, stop living in the past Old man!" the third and Enma turned seeing Nami slipping through the bars.
"Now's the time to correct your mistake. To relieve yourself of that guilt inside you feel, it's hard letting go of people especially those that were once important to you, but you need to snap out of t and do the right thing, he's not that talented little boy anymore, he's more monster than man now." Nami scowled climbing up the third's leg and wrapping around his shoulders.
"Right! We end this now. Thank you Nami." The third's resolve returned as he gripped Enma.
The two former Hokages disappeared in a blur, the third released Enma his hands sitting in a familiar cross shape, "Shadow clone!" he created to more versions of himself each with a Nami on their shoulders, quickly running through the hands seals; snake, boar, ram, rabbit, dog, rat, bird, horse, snake and clapping his hands together. Enma's eye widened as he recognized the jutsu that his old friend had used. Orochimaru laughed at the blatant waste of chakra not understanding what jutsu had just been performed.
The hairs on the back of Nami stood up on end as a great wave of cold descended around him. Nami glanced back, ears flattened to its head at the figure it saw. The Shingami was stood behind them, a giant translucent gaunt spectre with a demonic visage, it had long shaggy white hair with two red horns protruding, and its skin was a dark greyish blue. White garments are draped across it along with a set of prayer beads in its left hand it's tanto held in his mouth. A spirit was held suspended in front of it, which Nami soon realized was the Third's, all this was seen as the third glanced back to view the ominous figure behind him.
"It's already too late; no matter what you do I've won! The leaf will be demolished!" Orochimaru smirked.
"The leaf is my home! My village! I am the Hokage the one who protects it with everything they have; I am the main pillar of strength for the village."
"What nonsense you spew. You are just another name in history, a leader of an organization called Leaf, eventually the rock that is your face will crumble." Orochimaru smiled, knowing the end was close.
The first stepped forwards hands running through symbols." Genjutsu: bringer of darkness. The barrier was filled by inky blackness no one could see anything. An attack ripped through the Third's shoulder, before the darkness started to lift, the third looked to Hikaru outside the barrier, and he had managed to cancel out the first Hokage's attack. He smiled glad that Naruto would always have Hikaru buy his side.
"You are wrong; the leaf village isn't just an organization. Memories flashed through the Thirds head as he remembered every defining moment in his history. "Every year people are born into this village, they are raised here, they live here, some learn to fight, to live but all learn to protect what is precious to them, and for that they will gladly go to their deaths. Even though we are not all related by blood those of the village with the same ideals are to me the most the most precious, most important of all, they are family."
"Then I'll break you the main pillar in half and that will destroy the leaf." Orochimaru advanced as the darkness receded.
"No. I'm the man who inherited the will of the leaf, from the First and Second Hokages, my mentors, I am the Third Hokage! No matter how much you target the village another will come to inherit my will and become the pillar to protect the leaf," his mind lingered on the fourth Hokage; he was hit in the face by a blonde tail. "The fifth has inherited that will! I'll show you a special jutsu even you don't know about." His hands came up into a seal again. "Dead demon imprisonment."
The third was hit repeated by his former mentors as he waited or the Shingami to begin. Slowly the hand with the prayer beads was raised so the beads slipped down its wrist. Cursed seals appeared running from its fingers down past his wrist as he reached forwards into the spirit of the third. Blood pooled in the corner of the Third's mouth at last the darkness cleared completely, the two clones darted out catching the First and Second, holding on tightly as the Shingami's hand passed through his stomach reaching forwards into theirs.
"Sorry Sarutobi." Hashirama spoke his personality reappearing.
"We caused you a lot of trouble" the second smiled, his body returning to his old decaying look.
"Hikaru the boy, he's..." Hashirama asked.
"Yes." Hiruzen interrupted.
"I see." Hashirama smiled, as his soul was pulled out of his body, travelling through into the third as did his brother's.
"Forgive me, Hashirama and Tobirama sensei's. Fuuin." He coughed and spluttered more blood dripping from his mouth.
The two former bodies decayed like paper revealing the dead bodies of Zaku and Kin the two sound shinobi from the chuunin exam.
"Even the lives of your subordinates, you cast away so effortlessly." He remembered the words of wisdom his teachers had passed onto him as tears pooled in his eyes.
"How long to you intend to sprout nonsense? Show me this jutsu you claim I don't know about."
The third held his hand out summoning Enma to him, releasing his clones and heading for Orochimaru who picked his sword up again and blocked every attack the two performed, finally Enma's hand knocked Kusanagi away, forcing Orochimaru to summon snakes from his hands as Enma reached out for him. The snakes entwined themselves around Enma's arm travelling down the staff stopping his advance, but allowing the Third to grab Orochimaru, pulling him close so their foreheads met.
"This is the end!"
The Shingami's hand reached through the Third again reaching out for Orochimaru, who finally felt the cold sensation, he was rooted to the spot but managed to move two fingers commanding Kusanagi to strike out as the Shingami started to pull his soul from him. Enma transformed back into himself dismissing the snakes and lunging forwards to grab the sword. His hand dripped with blood as he caught the edge of the blade closest to the hand, blood dripping from the other end as it impaled the Third.
"Why didn't you avoid it?" Orochimaru bit out.
"Because there is no coming back from this jutsu." Nami supplied, surprise everyone there.
"Yes, in exchange for this jutsu to work you hand over your soul to death; it's a fuuin jutsu you pay for with your life. So there was no need to avoid it, I'll die anyway. Once the fuuin is completed my soul will be consumed. It's the jutsu used by the fourth that saved this village twelve years ago, but you will die as well."
"This is the jutsu that sealed the Kyuubi?"
"Yes, I'll drag your soul out of your body soon and seal you."
"You should see it soon."
"Your soul's about halfway out so," the third agreed with the cat.
Orochimaru finally saw the Shingami behind them, reaching up with its right hand to remove the tonto from its mouth, its serpentine tongue dashing out rub its lips, as four souls began to get dragged in to the spirit hovering in front of it. He swiped the tonto through the souls of the first and second devouring them in one bite.
"I won't go so easily you old fool." He moved his two fingers urging his sword further through the Third's body. Causing more blood to flow from the wound as well as making him lose the strength required to seal Orochimaru.
Hikaru's eyes snapped open; his eyes gaining a dark pigmentation the pupils become horizontal lines and his olive iris' turning yellow. He pushed up flying up to where the weak point in the barrier was, spinning in the air he kicked out at the staff remains, pushing them through the barrier, he spun round using his other foot to kick the second half into the final barrier, both shattering as he fell down to earth.
"It would appear I don't have the strength to finish this as I had hope, but I have enough to stop you ambitions!"
The Shingami's arm retreated back into the third holding onto Orochimaru's arms, pulling away trying to stop the process, he pushed his fingers higher pushing the sword higher. Nami sprung from under the Thirds hat biting down on Orochimaru's fingers, drawing blood, stopping the movement of the sword, Enma holding on trying to pull it back.
"I've ordered the hidden sand shinobi to come and infiltrate the village, your Leaf shinobi will be annihilated, down to the last woman and child, the leaf will crumble." Orochimaru spat, in pain as Nami continued to dig teeth and claw into his hand.
"Look around you Orochimaru; you should never underestimate the shinobi of this village. True strength is not about the mastery of ninjutsu, when they are protecting something important that's when the shinobi's true strength appears."
"A boring speech."
"This is the perfect way to punish you, one who's obsession with Jutsu has turned him into a monster. Your arms are going to be sealed." The third gurgled a laugh.
Nami let go of Orochimaru's fingers dropping to the ground. The Shingami's tonto rose into the air swinging down cutting the partially revealed soul of the snake ninja.
"I want a day, just a day to say good bye." Nami's choked voice met the Hokage's ears.
"Nami, did I ever tell you why I call you Nami?" the third smiled falling back, as the blonde cat ran over.
"My arms won't move! What have you done to me Old Man?" Orochimaru screamed.
"Please don't go, don't leave us." Nami cried. "Just let me say good bye, just a little more time." The cat's pleading blue eyes turned to the Shingami, his mouth swallowing the spirits whole but still closing his eyes and inclining his head as the Third landed back on the roof Nami ran to his head, where the third was whispering listening closely as he passed on his dying words. Enma pulling the blade from his prone body as Nami nuzzled his cheek mewing in a distraught keen.
The sound four moved grabbing the exhausted form of Orochimaru as the barrier collapsed around them. He fell into their arms exhausted managing to look up as Hikaru's body fell towards the earth, his body slowly turning to stone as he plummeted to earth.
The ANBU team that had been stuck outside the barrier leapt after the sound four, Kidomaru turning and using a jutsu to create a giant spider's web to stop their advance. They sprung over the roof tops helping their fallen leader make a retreat.
"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" screamed out causing all heads everywhere to turn in the direction of the stadium at the broken scream of Naruto's voice echoing around the village.
