Chapter 40. The Shinobi.

Naruto's clone fell from the roof of the stadium a black bird flying off into the distance, he ran off the roof creating two clones as he did so, the wind whistled through his hair the smile that was normally on his face gone his lips were pursed as he landed, his two clones either side of him, they nodded and each split in a different direction.

Team Takeru had dispelled the genjutsu easily enough looking up seeing Naruto on the roof of the stadium they automatically followed him out knowing that the other ninja present would handle things in the stadium. Takeru stopped turning as Riku and Ume caught up with him, and Naruto moved up next to them.

"The gates, Ume you sure you can do this?" Naruto asked.

"I'm not leaving you." She nodded.

"Good, let's move." Naruto nodded, jumping up onto the roofs his team following behind him.

The almighty boom coming from the border turned all their heads as they saw the enormous three headed snake taking down their walls as though they were made of paper, a second Naruto appeared running through hands seals and summoning a few toads. Gama his familiar orange skin shining in the late afternoon sunlight and another toad he'd previously never summoned before. This toad was only just taller than Naruto, with a dark blue body, a white underbelly with black markings on its legs, carrying a sword.

The second Naruto spun two kunai into his hands and darted off to where the enemy ninja were pouring through the holes the snakes had created. Team Takeru followed the snakes down the village another wall destroyed in their wake. Ume ran through hand seals taking a breath and breathing out a large fireball, Naruto quickly combined a wind based jutsu with it, allowing the flames to become bigger, and brighter enhancing the jutsu as it engulfed many of the swarming Sound ninja. Riku jumped forwards following the wave of flame catching and slamming any ninjas that tried to escape the destructive path of Ume and Naruto's combined jutsu.

Takeru glanced back at Ume, watching as Naruto stuck close to her side, he ducked as a ninja escaped Riku's watch, catching him by the ankle and sending him into the receding flames. Looking up as Ibiki dropped down into the fight, Ibiki glanced at Naruto smirking before tapping Takeru on the shoulder and moving towards the enemy sand ninja.

Kakashi glanced around noticing the other ninja that had dispelled the genjutsu he watched team Takeru move out, Kurenai woke the students setting them the task of getting the civilians to safety, both in the stadium and in the village. Ino, Choji and Tenten nodded jumping over the railing and up onto the roof and out of the stadium. Kakashi's hand came down on Sakura's shoulder as she went to move past him.

"Sakura, I need you to do something else for me, grab Naruto and Shikamaru," Sakura ducked down as a sound shinobi appeared behind her, Kakashi quickly making sort work of the ninja with a kunai, the second ninja she hadn't noticed also dropping thanks to the kunai to the head. "Stay down for a moment why we even the odds." Kakashi nodded as Asuma moved his chakra enhanced trench knives onto his hands and started knocking away the enemy ninja.

"This is a lot to ask of you all, this will be your first A Ranked mission since wave, you are to get Shikamaru and Naruto, and follow after Sasuke. He's in pursuit of Gaara and his siblings from sand. I'm concerned about Gaara no doubt Naruto knows more about Gaara than I do, it will be a four man squad."

"But sensei Shikamaru and Naruto only make up a three man squad who's the fourth person?"

Takeru ducked low as Riku came flying towards him, Riku grabbed the shoulders edge of Takeru's flak jacket, and spinning around running through hand seals, and firing a fire jutsu at the ninja advancing towards them, he smirked at his sensei and followed the flame by throwing shuriken into the flames as he moved off. Takeru glanced back at Ume and Naruto noticing that they had fallen behind. His heart leapt into his throat, when he saw Ume dancing around the fire spinning on her hands as she became separated from Naruto, he went to fall back towards them when Naruto kunai glowing took out the person about to attack Ume, Naruto looked up making eye contact with his team leader, his head tilted as he realized why Takeru was more panicked, he glanced back to Ume before looking back at Takeru he nodded stepping back so he was level with Ume not prepared to leave her side. Takeru let out a breath, the panic leaving him as he stepped up to Riku using an earth wall to knock the jumping sound ninja away. Riku looked up at him the smile on his face faltering as he looked at his sensei he glanced back to Ume and Naruto understanding appearing on his face as he cottoned on to what Naruto was thinking.

Ibiki and his team of ninja's were dodging round team Takeru as they fought off the invaders, ending up on a roof as another set of giant snakes appeared slithering through the already destroyed walls and heading further through the village.

Naruto turned as the cries of the civilians close to the walls sounded, he shook his head as they panicked, he looked further back through the village to see Tenten, Ino, and Choji moving the civilians out of danger, he tapped Ume on the shoulder as she ducked under his arm spinning away from the shuriken sent flying at her.

Naruto and Shikamaru skidded to a halt in front of Sakura as Kakashi summoned one of his Nin dogs.

"The last person is this little doggy?" Sakura sniffed as Naruto and Shikamaru crouched down.

"He's not just a cute little dog Sakura he's one of Kakashi's ninken," Naruto smiled as Pakkun moved over to Sakura.

"Don't call me cute." The dog grumbled.

"Pakkun be nice, I know I've already used you guys once today but I need you to take these kids to Sasuke, he's pursuing Gaara."

"That idiot he'll be killed." Naruto growled.

"Come on lets go we don't know how much time before Gaara loses control." Naruto dropped as Asuma slammed a sound ninja into the wall causing it to crack his trench knives glowed as they pushed through the ninja and a hole appeared in the wall. The team dashed through the hole the moment the sound ninja dropped, disappearing into the distance.

"Where did you send them?" Asuma asked as he moved closer to Kakashi being pushed back by two ninja.

"After Sasuke." Kakashi supplied slicing the throat of two more ninja frowning as he watched nine sound ninja who had escaped onto the roof darted after the team.

"Asuma!" Kurenai shouted as she appeared out of tree behind an enemy shinobi slicing his throat as she spotted the ninja in pursuit of the team.

"Got it!" Asuma shouted dashing after the kids.

Ibiki and his team dropped back as the giant snake Orochimaru had summoned continued to cause destruction while their attacks did nothing to stop them, Ibiki glanced around looking for Naruto and the other younger ninja that were in the middle of the battlefield when a shout and a cloud of smoke drew his attention away from the flash of blonde he had finally spotted. He and his team turned to look up at the giant aquamarine twin katana wielding toad, which was now sat atop one of the giant snakes.

"Long time no see Ibiki." Jiraiya called down from atop the toad's head, "Aren't people supposed to grow up in mind and body, I couldn't stand to watch you anymore."

"Jiraiya-Sama?" Ibiki was shocked.

"Where's the Hokage?" Jiraiya asked.

"At the test arena." Ibiki answered solemnly.

Jiraiya opened his mouth to respond when Naruto cut across him, "No time for chit chat old man, these snakes need to be killed while we brush away the sand!" Strange that Naruto wanted to refrain from killing the sand ninja. Ibiki turned watching as Ume spun in her purple vortex surrounding another of the snakes, Naruto jumped down into vortex grabbing Ume and pulling them both out as the fire raged across the snake, a cloud of smoke appeared as the snake returned to where it had come from. Naruto and Ume landed on a roof top, Naruto pulled Ume close as she lost her footing and her vortex spun into a small fire.

"We need to get you out of here you weren't fully recovered from our mission." Naruto started pulling towards the mountain where the civilians and hospital patients and academy students were being moved to.

"I'm a ninja of this village Naruto I'm going to help protect it!" she shouted at him.

"You've done enough; even Tenten, Choji, and Ino are falling back. I'm not willing to have ninja needlessly die because they feel they have to protect the village, if you're injured get back don't risk your life for the sake of buildings, they can be rebuilt, but life can't be replaced. After this attack we're going to need all the able bodies we can get, no one needs to die unnecessarily we have enough competent and skilled ninja to handle this, no one is going to look down on any ninja that is injured, the village could be turned to rubble as long as the people that make up this village are safe, that's what counts." He grabbed Ume by the shoulders as Takeru and Riku landed on the room next to them.

"There's nothing more we can do here," Takeru confirmed as several more injured ninja joined them on the roof, creating a small perimeter where they could easily pick off any enemy that broke through the main defensive line.

"You could inspire the masses to do anything you know that Naruto." Riku walked over easing the tension between the two.

"I don't care what people do as long as they remember their lives are more valuable than buildings." Naruto sighed, as one of the buildings he had helped to refurbish was squashed by a snake.

At the Hokage monument, the academy students were being ushered into the shelter inside the mountain.

"Listen carefully, when the enemy ninja's appear remain calm, just keep making your way into the secret shelter." Iruka called out. "As your teachers, we'll protect every one of you."

"Even Naruto?" a young student asked.

"Don't worry I'm entitled to keep you alive as long as possible too." Naruto smirked counting off the students as they made their way inside.

Naruto and Konohamaru both looked up before Iruka as slight taking noise ripped through the air followed by the Third's face on the monument cracking. Iruka and Naruto made eye contact across the sea of heads, Konohamaru finding his hand as he stopped next to him.

"He promised it would be okay," Konohamaru whispered.

"Right now I'm more concerned about you guys, grandpa's the Hokage, he can handle himself, he's the strongest person in the village," Naruto hugged Konohamaru in a one armed hug.

The shinobi in the stadium had finished their fights and were looking down at the stadium floor that was now littered with craters.

"I'm surprised how many sound invaded even with the aid of the Sand." Gai stated.

"When you get down to it is war." Kakashi glanced back towards where he had sent his team.

"They'll be alright Kakashi." Kurenai stated noticing his glance.

"Besides it appears not all the enemy are down." Gai stated point to Genma facing the sand sensei and an ANBU.

Out in the village Naruto was right the injured ninja had been replaced by more competent ninja taking over from their comrades. The lord Hyuuga had taken position using his family jutsu to attack five or more enemies as they advanced towards him. the ground shook as Choza grew to giant proportions flattening the enemy as he moved while, his team Shikaku used the advanced version of the shadow bind to eliminate several ninja all at once and Inoichi took control of an enemy turning him against his fellow ninja, with no idea why his body wasn't responding to his movements.

Out in the forest Shino had been found by his father, who was using his own bugs to draw the poison out of his system. He turned as he saw Temari passing over head.

"Naruto wanted to help them," Shino mumbled, his father nodded leaving the two siblings be.

"Temari!" Kankuro called out as she passed above him.

She dropped down to his level helping him to his feet. "Got beat huh?"

"Gaara?"

"He unleashed Shukaku but Naruto's trying to stop him, I think it worked," she turned looking back in the direction she had come.

"We should go back I guess then, it takes a lot to stop Shukaku." Kankuro nodded as Temari slung his arm over her shoulder and they headed back towards their brother.

"He changes everyone," Shibi commented keeping an eye on the siblings as he worked.

Kiba's mum and sister smirked as they faced off against their own enemies.

"Kuromaru Go!" the giant one eared eye patch wolf lunged forwards ripping into the enemy.

"That's what makes us exceptional shinobi," Naruto commented watching as the leaf ninja all worked together to defend their home.

He popped out of existence startling those around him as Ume and Riku shared a look of worry.

"He'll be okay," Takeru assured as he looked out at the village.

Kakashi and Gai dropped down next to Genma staring at the Sand Sensei, Baki. All heads turned as Hikaru shattered the barrier and the sound four grabbed Orochimaru.

"Stay put Gai; we need to stay here, who knows what enemy traps there are hidden out there." Genma stated sensing the man about to follow after the fleeing enemy.

"Besides we have a rat to deal with, isn't that right Kabuto?" Kakashi narrowed his eyes as the ANBU pulled off his mask to reveal the smirking face of Kabuto.

"Rat is such a harsh term Kakashi, I'm sure your little fox wouldn't appreciate the term as much as I don't." He smirked.

"Stay away from Naruto!" Kakashi growled stepping forwards.

"But he's such an interesting person, if it weren't for the fox he may have been the one to catch Orochimaru's eye." Kabuto laughed. "You might want to work on keeping him out of the frontline though," he hinted glancing up to where Naruto's clone had appeared on the roof.

"What do we do now?" Baki asked.

"Slowly retreat, no point fighting now, he'll just steal all our moves, anyway, even if he has a sharingan it will never be as good as an Uchiha's." He smirked disappearing in a cloud of smoke.

Kakashi turned looking up to where Kabuto had looked spotting Naruto there, his eye narrowed as he thought about what was said.

"Hey the sand's falling away!" Pakkun called out as Sakura fell away from the tree Sasuke jumped forwards and catching her, carefully laying her down on the branch.

"Stay here, look after!" Sasuke ordered as he ran off to find Naruto.

(Line)

Iruka turned to Naruto as his head snapped round he smiled before popping causing the children to look round at him in worry.

"He was in the middle of the exam don't forget, I'm sure he's fine, he had more than one clone around the village today." He tried to calm them down.

"But it only pops when it gets it or he runs out of chakra." Konohamaru stated worry evident in his eyes.

"He fought a monster, he probably just used up all his chakra, monsters are hard to beat." The little red haired girl stated.

"How'd you know that Akane?" Iruka asked.

"I can sense monsters, Naruto has one inside of him, and he was fighting someone who unleashed their monster. My sister had one too, that's how I know what they feel like, and Naruto is very strong to hold back a monster." She bit her lip, her red hair falling into her face, covering her blush.

'Looks like someone's joined the Naruto fan club. I hope he's okay.' Iruka thought.

"Temari, Kankuro, I'm sorry." Gaara reached out for his siblings as they helped to get over the border back towards their own land.

The siblings shared a shocked look.

"It's okay," Kankuro voiced.

Jiraiya felt the familiar pull of chakra he turned as the toad he was stood atop crushed another snake causing it to return to its home, he jumped away as the toad also returned to its plain of existence he landed in the stadium seeing Hikaru falling as he slowly turned to stone. 'Impossible!' he thought jumping forwards and catching the young man, he turned seeing Gama and a young blue toad bouncing on to the roof calling them down as he landed.

"Get him seen to by the toad sages!" he ordered handing over Hikaru to the young blue toad, watching as the reversed summoned him to their home, before a heartbreaking scream drew his attention to the young blonde on the roof, he turned back to where Naruto had been looking jumping onto the roof arriving just as many other shinobi did, all staring down at their fallen leader.

Naruto and the two toads pushed their way back towards the stadium, Naruto, and the blue toad finding perfect balance between one another completely trusting that the other would be there to watch their back. Gama glanced up feeling a familiar chakra take over someone in the stadium, Naruto stopped just short of a blade as he looked up at the stadium feeling Hikaru's chakra fade out. He pushed up dancing off the enemy ninja that had tried to slice him, hitting him in the back of the head knocking him out as he darted up to the roof of the stadium he watched as Hikaru fell back after shattering the barrier surrounding where the Hokage was, he watched in horror as Hikaru slowly started to turn to stone as the sound four who had been creating the barrier retreated back to Orochimaru grabbing their leader and retreating away, his eyes zeroed in on the prone form of the Hokage.

"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" screamed out causing all heads everywhere to turn in the direction of the stadium at the broken scream of Naruto's voice echoing around the village.

He felt himself pop the scream falling from his lips as the last thing he saw was the fallen form of his grandfather and the Shingami slowly returning to where it came from.
