Hello, everyone! The previous chapter saw Touma and Mikoto's initial encounter with the High Priest. In this chapter, the chase between the High Priest and our couple begins.
Also, I'm starting my new job next Monday, so updates to this fic will probably be slower from here on out.
Rekuta: Yeah, I had a few free days to quickly do some writing. Mikoto's friends won't be directly joining the fight against the High Priest, but like in canon, Kuroko and Uiharu will be involved in evacuating areas of the city as Judgement members. And here, they'll know that the damage is being caused by a Magic God.
Mugersu700: Thanks, I'm glad you're enjoying the story, and especially Mikoto and Touma's relationship dynamic.
dragonghoul9707: Yes, Touma and Mikoto will face some challenges in the upcoming events, but their relationship will become stronger as they work through them. Mikoto won't get her friends directly involved in the fight, but she herself will face some challenges in the fight against the High Priest. Nephthys and Niang-Niang will still be mischievous towards Touma, but it might not be as blatant as in canon, and they definitely won't kiss him. Noukan was the one who killed the High Priest in the end in canon. It will be interesting to see what happens in GT5 regarding Alice and Accelerator's punishment.
xellos540: Kumokawa was trying to impress Touma, even though she does know that he's taken. Touma didn't know that the High Priest was a Magic God yet, so it does make sense for him to be confident. I think it is canon that the Magic Gods's desires resulted in Imagine Breaker gravitating towards Touma. Now that you mention it, I wonder how Imagine Breaker would relate to Einstein's theories of relativity. It is an interesting choice between forcing people to be "happy" and letting them be free but also potentially unhappy. Yeah, Mikoto is used to that sort of thing by now. Aleister is the one who weakened them.
Touma pedalled the bike as hard as he could towards the school's front gate, with Mikoto pressed up against him from the back seat. She was sitting sideways on her seat, rather than straddling it, not because she cared about being elegant or ladylike, but because it allowed her to more easily see behind them. This gave them a better chance at fighting back against the High Priest, who was pursuing them.
The school gate was closed, but thanks to the documentation that Komoe-sensei had provided, he was able to perform a trick that sent the bike leaping over the chain-link gate. There was then a wall immediately in front of them, so Touma prepared to make a sharp turn and shouted, "Hold on tight, Mikoto!"
The girl tightened her embrace and pressed her head against his shoulder, and Touma successfully made the turn and continued driving forward. The High Priest was right behind them, but he didn't care about crashing into anything. He broke through and destroyed the gate, and then crashed into a truck, breaking all the way through. He then made the same sharp turn, swatting aside a car that was in his way, and continued running towards the fleeing couple, chuckling all the way.
Touma gritted his teeth and muttered, "He's just messing with us!" Although the bike was moving at over 50 kilometers per hour, their distance from the High Priest wasn't growing, and the old man didn't even seem to be taking them that seriously. It was as if he was letting them get away for a little while just so he could demonstrate how hopeless the situation was for them.
Mikoto groaned against his shoulder, also feeling annoyed at the situation. She had been hoping for a fun day with her boyfriend during the event, but now they were running away from a Magic God, by far the strongest opponent she had ever faced, perhaps aside from Touma himself. She wryly said, "We're on a bike ride together, fleeing from a monster. It's like a romantic action movie. If I'd known this was going to happen, maybe I would've worn a white dress."
The boy chuckled and replied, "Well, you looked really pretty in that white dress at your violin performance. Though that long dress would be inconvenient for bike riding and fighting. Maybe a short white dress could work."
The girl smirked and said in a teasing tone, "Oh, I bet you'd enjoy seeing me in a short dress!" Her boyfriend chuckled in response. But she then adopted a serious tone and said, "So what are we going to do? If we keep running away from him, he might end up harming some unrelated people!"
Touma winced and tried to think of what to do, since she had a good point. He decided to try making a large series of turns through smaller roads and alleys, hoping to shake the High Priest off their tail.
However, Mikoto, who was keeping a lookout from her seat, noted, "It's not working, he's still following us!" Indeed, they both heard the old man's mocking laughter. The High Priest was able to make the sharp turns just as quickly and accurately as Touma, and he didn't have to push himself hard to do it.
Touma clenched his teeth and exclaimed, "This isn't going to cut it. I guess we'll have to attack him somehow!"
The girl wondered, "But how?" Her boyfriend didn't immediately respond, since he was thinking of a way to do so. He decided to leave the alleyway and return to the main road. Touma then glanced around, and soon made a decision after noticing something.
He quickly warned, "Hold tight, Biri-Biri!" As she did so, the boy made the bike jump up several meters. This allowed him to "borrow" a bucket being used by a window-washer, and he then dumped the cleaning solution across the street below.
The acrobike landed back on the ground, and the High Priest's feet slipped as he tried to make the sharp turn out of the alleyway. The old man then rolled along the asphalt at 60 kilometers per hour, scraping across the road and eventually colliding into a car. Touma twisted his head to check the damage and asked, "Did that get him?"
Even as he spoke, he knew what the answer was. Someone equally or even more powerful than Othinus would never be taken out with a simple trick like that.
The High Priest created another giant mud arm, using it to pick up the car he'd crashed into and fling it towards Touma and Mikoto. The boy quickly maneuvered the bike to dodge the giant projectile, but then the mud arm propelled the High Priest into the air.
He landed on the bike's handlebars. While pointing his golden sword in Touma's face, he cackled, "Ho ho. Is that all you have, Kamijou Touma? Then I suppose it's time to-"
His speech was cut off as Touma pedalled the bike directly under a large electronic sign jutting out from an adjacent building. The old man's head collided with it, destroying the sign in a burst of brilliant sparks, and also forcing him off of the bike.
This time, Touma didn't bother wondering if that had defeated the High Priest, and instead pedalled away with all his might, muttering, "Damn it, what are we going to do? We'll just be summoning that monster to wherever we run to."
Mikoto pressed up against his back and said into his ear, "Touma, look!" Touma turned to where she was pointing and saw a bunch of Anti-Skill vehicles passing their bike and heading towards the High Priest.
Touma brought the bike to a sudden stop and exclaimed, "Anti-Skill? Those idiots!"
Indeed, Anti-Skill was sending a bunch of unmanned vehicles, including armored cars and attack helicopters, after the High Priest. But he easily crushed them, both with his own body and with his mud arms.
Touma and Mikoto were very upset with the carnage, and how the High Priest had chosen to use violence instead of settling things peacefully. Thus, they came up with a new plan. The boy made the bike jump over one of the falling helicopters, which was about to hit some of the injured Anti-Skill members. Mikoto used her magnetism to redirect the helicopter, preventing it from harming anyone.
Meanwhile, Touma had grabbed a piece of thick wire from one of the crushed armored cars. As the bike landed on the ground, he threw it towards the old man, so that it wrapped around his neck. The wire had also been wrapped around the helicopter's rotor, so the spinning of the blades swung the High Priest's body around and around at tremendous speeds. And since the helicopter was on its side, he was repeatedly smashed into the ground and flung back into the sky.
Touma took this opportunity to warn the Anti-Skill members, "Get back, he's too dangerous! That isn't enough to kill that Magic God!" The officers paled as they heard what kind of being the High Priest was, and some of them even fainted.
Since it would be dangerous to remain there, Touma continued their flight on the acrobike, and the High Priest threw the helicopter away before continuing his pursuit.
Touma knew it was only the beginning, but nothing they had tried so far worked. He griped, "Damn it! None of those attacks worked! Even Saints and other powerful magicians try to protect themselves from attacks, and even Accelerator reflects them. But this guy doesn't even do anything to protect himself! How are we supposed to fight against a monster like him?"
Mikoto wore a grim expression on her face as she thought about what he said. She eventually made a decision and said, "Well, we have another monster right here."
The boy's eyes widened as he realized what his girlfriend was suggesting. He shouted, "Mikoto, no!"
She grimly replied, "I have to at least try." She removed her arms from the boy's waist and jumped off the bike, using her powers to abruptly come to a stop. She pulled out an arcade coin from her pocket and also used her magnetism to pull over some large metal pieces from the wrecked Anti-Skill vehicles.
Touma frantically turned the bike around and brought it to a stop, looking over at his girlfriend. She knew that a Magic God was unfathomably powerful, so she slipped straight to her ultimate move. Mikoto first fired the coin towards the High Priest at thrice the speed of sound. However, the High Priest simply swung his arm and casually deflected the railgun away, all while continuing to run towards them.
Mikoto frowned at her signature move being swatted away so easily. Saints like Acqua and Brunhild had been able to dodge her railguns, but this was even worse. However, she had fully expected something like this to happen against a Magic God, so she tried again with her larger metal projectiles, punching each of them towards the High Priest.
This time, the High Priest made no effort to dodge them, and fully took each hit head-on. But when the smoke cleared, he remained looking at Mikoto and Touma with a smirk.
Mikoto gritted her teeth and muttered, "He really is messing with us." After all, she knew he could have probably deflected the larger projectiles as well, but he had deliberately chosen to get hit, just to demonstrate how hopeless her efforts were. She glanced over at Touma, who also didn't look that surprised with what had happened. She continued, "I guess we can't just use brute force."
Now that her attacks had failed, it was now the High Priest's turn to attack. He detached a nearby building at the base, and used a newly created mud arm to swing the building down towards Mikoto.
The girl immediately used her abilities to attract herself to the side of the building, as well as to slow and eventually stop its descent. When the High Priest noticed this, he mused, "Quite the interesting trick. Is that magnetism?"
Mikoto snapped back, "Shut up! If I hadn't done anything, who knows what would've happened to everyone inside the building?"
The High Priest replied, "Hah, I see, so you are here to save those people! Which means you must have done more than simply catch the building with magnetism."
Before he could speak any further, Mikoto showed herself in front of him. The High Priest was a little surprised, since it had seemed like her voice had come from under the tilted building, but she had vibrated a thin metal panel to reproduce her own voice. After all, if she had actually stayed beneath the building, she would've had pieces of broken glass raining down on her.
Mikoto then gathered some iron sand into a whip, and immediately used it to cut the mud arm at its base, before sending the whip directly towards the High Priest himself.
The High Priest said in an unconcerned tone, "Watch out, that's dangerous." He created a second mud arm, and used it to grab another building to shield himself. Mikoto unintentionally slammed the iron sand whip into the building, though she made sure it wasn't sharp enough to cut through it.
The old man said to her, "Now then, young lady, there are different ways to save people. The people in this building will die without pain or fear, and won't know what happened to them. Isn't that a form of salvation?" As he spoke, he also grabbed more and more buildings and threw them.
Even Mikoto had a hard time holding them all back. She focused her powers on saving lives by pulling water pipes and rebar from within the buildings to use as cushions, but it was unclear how long she could keep it up, preventing the buildings from crushing her and from crushing the people inside.
Therefore, she went for a different tactic. She once again swung her iron sand sword, but not directly at the High Priest. Instead, she cut out the ground beneath him, which sent him falling into the empty subway tunnel below.
The High Priest just laughed and allowed himself to sink down, as if delighted that she'd been able to set up such a pitfall. But though his attitude annoyed Mikoto, it did allow her to use her magnetism to set down the pile of buildings.
Once that was done, Touma approached her on the bike and used it to literally sweep her off her feet and back into the back seat. Mikoto immediately wrapped her arms around him again, while he told her, "See, we can't just attack him with brute force! Even if he's somehow been weakened to a billionth or a trillionth of his full power, a Magic God is still a Magic God! Now hang on tight, he'll be coming after us right away."
Indeed, the ground immediately swelled up and opened, and the High Priest reappeared on the surface. As Touma fled from him on the acrobike, the High Priest spread out his own arms, as well as two new mud arms, and questioned while charging towards them, "What will you do now, Kamijou Touma?".
Touma continued with his now customary fleeing tactics. He made many sharp turns with the bicycle, rolled down the railings of stairs, cut across a park, and maneuvered through narrow alleyways. With its powerful suspension, gyros, and motor, he was able to successfully pull of tricks which would've been near suicidal in a normal bicycle.
The boy then frantically asked his girlfriend, "Where's the High Priest?"
Mikoto played her role as lookout and replied, "He was at that corner...now he's at that corner...Ah, here he comes, he's still after us!"
In response, Touma pedalled even harder. The current alley had a pile of trash on the ground and a giant air conditioner unit jutting out of the wall. He was forced to perform an advanced trick, which involved making the bike jump and then turn horizontally in midair. This allowed them to clear both of those obstacles and continue driving forward.
Mikoto asked in a pretty impressed tone, "Hey, wasn't that a major trick? How did you learn to ride this so well on your first try?"
Touma answered, "It's actually pretty easy once you get the hang of it. It's the machine that's amazing, not me. It'll stabilize itself no matter what you do."
After making several more narrow turns, Mikoto again looked behind them and announced, "I think we're safe for now. We can't let our guard down, of course, but at least I can't see him anymore." Even if they couldn't outrun him in speed, as long as they made him lose sight of them, it would still leave them safe, even against a Magic God. Or at least, that is what they hoped.
Touma was afraid to come to a complete stop, but he did slow down his pedalling, and returned to a main road. He panted heavily and said, "So...now what do we do?"
At her full power, Othinus had been able to destroy and remake the world over and over again. The High Priest may not have had as much power currently, but he was still a Magic God. If they continued playing tag with him, there was no guarantee that Academy City would remain intact. Other villains had intentionally threatened lives, but the High Priest didn't care if his casual attacks took millions of lives, as long as he accomplished his goal. The boy thought, "What happened to him not wanting to cause any trouble? What a lie!"
Mikoto squeezed her arms around her boyfriend's stomach and rested her head on his shoulder, asking, "He's not going to throw a tantrum and indiscriminately destroy the city now that he's lost sight of us, right?"
Touma took the opportunity to enjoy the feeling of her soft cheek and hair against his face. He then answered, "I can't be sure, but I doubt he'd do that. Not because he has a conscience, it's just a matter of his tastes. If he liked that kind of method, he would have taken a hostage at the very beginning and forced me to come to a stage of his choosing."
The girl nodded against his shoulder, "I see, that makes sense. He's mainly threatened people to try to get you to agree with his demands, but he went for the peaceful discussion method first."
The boy then said, "Still, we can't just run away forever. We need to think of a way to turn this around."
Mikoto mused, "For now, we need to try to prevent collateral damage, right? Is there somewhere in this city without a lot of people, or buildings for him to grab? Like a large park or maybe the mountains?"
The boy chuckled at her comment, before replying, "Mikoto, even if we did find such an environment, we still need a way to beat the High Priest. His morals give no thought to human life, so we need to be certain we can defeat him. He won't spare us if we beg for our lives."
Mikoto groaned and retorted, "I know that! But how can we defeat that monster? Throw him in a garbage disposal plant's incinerator? Run him through a print shop's rotary press? Tear him to pieces with a giant lawnmower? I can picture him surviving all of those with a smile on his face!"
Touma turned his head and smirked at his girlfriend, saying, "Wow, you have a lot of gruesome ideas in your head, huh?"
The girl glared at him and said, "Hey, I only gave those examples because you brought it up!" However, she then sighed and muttered, "Though maybe I should lay off on the horror movies."
Touma thought back to his fights against Othinus. He hadn't actually defeated her in battle in those infinite hells, and his victory over her in Denmark only happened because she had been weakened by the fairy spell. He couldn't fight the High Priest over and over again billions of times until he gave up.
At that moment, they both heard a male voice say, "Honestly, you really are hopeless." When Touma and Mikoto turned towards it, they saw a red paper airplane flying alongside the acrobike.
At first, Touma thought it was some tracking device sent by the High Priest. But the voice continued, "I am the member of God's Right Seat corresponding to red, fire, and the right. That should be more than enough to tell you who I am."
Mikoto's eyes widened, and she exclaimed, "Fiamma?"
The paper airplane vibrated to produce his voice, "I know the situation, and I have a countermeasure against the High Priest. I can use the fairy spell that Ollerus and I used to weaken Othinus. By honing it and increasing its speed, I can obtain a spell that destroys Magic Gods. All you have to do is get yourself to District 5's park."
Touma questioned, "District 5? The one with lots of college students?"
Fiamma replied, "How would I know? The High Priest will continue chasing you no matter what, so just guide him to that point. Then, I will take over. This isn't my first time facing a Magic God, so there's nothing to worry about."
As soon as he heard this, Touma's entire body relaxed as he was released from the seemingly endless chase. He slowed down the bike to a stop, and rested his foot against the ground. They could finally breathe sighs of relief and gain a respite.
But in the very next moment, the ground next to the bike suddenly swelled upwards. A giant mud arm shot up and swallowed Fiamma's paper airplane. Touma and Mikoto reacted in shock, but the worst was yet to come. The arm then crumbled, revealing the High Priest once again. He immediately ran towards them and chortled, "Ho ho, missed me?"
Touma immediately sprung into action. Instead of pedalling away along the road, he performed a wheelie and launched the acrobike up into the air. Meanwhile, the High Priest summoned countless mud arms to try to crush them from above and below, and these attacks damaged the surrounding trees and sent a wind turbine blade flying into a nearby building.
Mikoto gritted her teeth at how unreasonably one-sided the fight was. The High Priest wasn't trying to keep it to a one-on-one (or technically one-on-two) fight. He would tear through the entire landscape and hope his target was crushed in the midst of it all. It was less of a fight and more like hunting down his prey.
Touma clenched his teeth as well and decided, "We'll have to rely on Fiamma. He was able to damage Othinus with the fairy spell, so he's perhaps the most knowledgeable person when it comes to properly fighting a Magic God!" He continued pedalling furiously for some time before asking, "Hey Biri-Biri, could you look up the fastest route to District 5?"
The girl quickly pulled out her phone, launched the map app, and looked at their current location. She then muttered, "Let's see, we're on Leaf Street now, so turn right at the intersection 500 meters ahead! That'll take us straight to District 5."
However, Touma's focus turned elsewhere as he saw his girlfriend on her phone. He suddenly had an idea, and exclaimed, "Oh! Could you call Index from your phone? If we speak with her and Othinus, maybe we can find a weakness in the High Priest! It might not be much, but we just need to stay alive until we get to Fiamma!"
For some reason, Mikoto found herself feeling a bit despondent as she heard his request. But she knew that it was a good idea, so she quickly made the call. After dialing the number, she heard it ring a few times, but it then went to the answering machine. The girl announced, "Sorry Touma, they're not picking up."
Touma sighed and muttered, "Just my luck. Guess we'll just have to go there as fast as we can and leave the rest to Fiamma." The intersection soon came up, and Touma sharply turned at it, getting onto a main road headed straight for District 5.
However, when he looked back, he saw the High Priest running after them, and he seemed even closer than before. The boy exclaimed, "Oh hell, did choosing the shortest route come back to bite us? He's faster on a straight road!"
Mikoto protested, "But you told me to check the shortest route!"
Touma replied, "I didn't say it was your fault! It's just a crappy situation."
They rode past a sign announcing they were now in District 5. He then asked, "Mikoto, how far is it to the central park?"
Mikoto quickly checked her map and answered, "About two kilometers." That wasn't too far away, but it was still enough of a distance that the High Priest could catch up to them. And taking evasive maneuvers to cut off the High Priest's view would only make them take longer to reach the park.
Having gathered her thoughts during the chase, Mikoto quietly spoke, "Hey, so we win if we get to the park before he catches up, right?"
Touma nodded, "Yes, but we don't have any way of doing that. The bike is already going at max speed, and I don't think the motor could be safely boosted with your powers."
Mikoto then said in a determined tone, "Right, we can't go any faster. Which means we just have to slow down the High Priest instead."
The boy turned back towards her and incredulously asked, "Are you serious? Even your upgraded full-power Railgun wasn't enough to-"
The girl buried her face into his shoulder and groaned, "Yes, I know! I know I don't stand a chance in a head-on battle!" She felt depressed about the whole situation. Even she had known it was hopeless for her to directly fight the High Priest, but being shown direct proof was still gut-wrenching.
Mikoto was Touma's partner, and was currently right by his side, but he knew that nothing the two of them could do together could work. Instead, he was placing all his hopes on Fiamma, a third party who had butted in.
Touma noticed how his girlfriend seemed to slump against his back, and how she had suddenly gone quiet. He looked back and saw that she seemed a little sad, so he asked, "What's the matter, Biri-Biri?"
The girl paused for a moment before letting out a small sigh, saying, "It's nothing." This was not the time to sulk. She couldn't give up, because the High Priest wouldn't wait around for her, and Touma couldn't either.
She gathered strength in her arms and said, "I'm not going to be that reckless this time. I know I can't win, so I'll stick to buying us some time."
Touma was somewhat relieved to hear that, but he asked, "How can you slow him down?"
Mikoto looked back with a determined expression and told him, "It isn't impossible if I just have to do it once."
Meanwhile, the High Priest was about 100 meters behind them, and was steadily narrowing the gap. As he closed it, he created a few more giant arms from the ground, and sent one of the enormous fists hurtling towards the acrobike.
However, Mikoto had devised a counter strategy. Having covered the area with iron sand, she used her magnetism to control the arms from within and twist them around each other, completely trapping them.
This didn't stop the High Priest for long, since she could not surpass him in pure strength. With a simple command, the giant arms ripped themselves apart from each other. Having retrieved his weapons, the High Priest wanted to send them after his targets, but he was interrupted by something.
He felt a small breeze at first, but that wind quickly grew faster and faster. From her back seat, Mikoto smirked at the old man and gave him a finger gun gesture, boasting, "A vacuum might sound like something special, but you can make one with a rubber suction cup, or even with your hands in the bath! And in wind tunnels, the vacuum tanks can generate supersonic wind speeds, just like now!"
Indeed, the gigantic palms pressed together had created a vacuum between them. Now that they had been pulled apart, a violent gust of wind directly hit the High Priest, while Mikoto and Touma were far enough to be safe.
The High Priest was lifted off his feet and sucked towards the point in space where the large hands were disintegrating. A normal human would have their eardrums and organs crushed by the pressure difference, but a Magic God like him might still survive.
But that didn't matter, since Mikoto and Touma had a different goal in mind. They just needed to buy a few seconds, not defeat the High priest themselves.
The boy shouted, "I see it! The central park's entrance!" He pedalled with all his might, sacrificing his remaining stamina, and stopped thinking of what would happen later on.
The High Priest soon broke free from the supersonic wind and continued the pursuit. The same trick wouldn't work a second or third time, so it now all came down to if they could reach Fiamma in time.
Mikoto and Touma's efforts paid off, and the acrobike raced through the gate and into the open park. The boy was completely drenched in sweat, but he relaxed a little as he passed by Fiamma, who seemed to have prepared a giant stake to use against the High Priest. It would all be up to Fiamma now.
As Fiamma had told Touma earlier, he had prepared an enhanced version of the fairy spell he had used on Othinus. The stake was 500 meters long and cut across the park. Since his right arm had been cut off, he held it in his left hand. All he had to do was swing it against the High Priest, and shove it directly at the center of his body, and the Magic God would rapidly be destroyed.
He would apply the same spell over 2 million times in a row, widening the distortion, until the High Priest's body was completely obliterated. Now that the Magic God was in range, Fiamma swung his arm and delivered the blow.
Soon afterwards, Touma and Mikoto heard a deafening sound behind them. The boy braked as hard as he could, and when the bike didn't slow down fast enough, he also pressed his shoes onto the ground to provide more fiction. With this, the acrobike came to a screeching stop with a burning smell.
The giant clash was soon over. Both of them gulped as they saw the result, plain as day. They couldn't believe their eyes, and they felt dizzy, but they had to accept what they saw.
Laughter reached their ears, and it did not come from Fiamma. Touma gritted his teeth and shouted, "Damn it, Fiamma!" That giant stake of light had stretched across the entire park, but it was shattering like glass and vanishing.
But it was more than just that. The one-armed man was thrown upwards, his body rotating through the air. He then slammed violently into the ground. Not even Fiamma of the Right, or his prized fairy spell, had been able to do anything against the High Priest.
Touma berated himself for causing this to happen. He could not have known what would happen, and Fiamma may not have wanted him to blame himself. But if Touma hadn't relied on him, this wouldn't have happened.
Mikoto took this difficult moment to ask, "What are we going to do? Was that really our final trump card?"
Touma was worried about Fiamma, and wanted to go over to check on his injuries. He wanted to at least make sure that the man was still breathing and had a pulse, but he didn't have the time. The High Priest was still going all out, and staying put would only get others caught in the old man's rampage. And if that happened, the odds of saving Fiamma would drop even further.
Thus, the boy said, "Mikoto, call an ambulance here." She already had her phone out, so she was able to do so quickly.
Touma was very afraid, and his heart was beating erratically. But he said in a determined tone, "We can't let anyone else get hurt like that! So we'll have to do whatever it takes to defeat the High Priest ourselves."
He immediately started driving the acrobike once again, and cut through the park at tremendous speed. With that, the chase continued anew.
