As the other ninja and citizens of Ninjago City regrouped, Yakunan scanned the damage that the Oni had created. His heart sank at the burning cityscape and the bright purple flames that were set ablaze. Sirens were blaring in all corners of the city.
Kai sighed at the destruction, then glanced at Yakunan. His expression was conflicted and extremely distressed.
Nya remained silent, searching the battlefield for something miraculous that could help rein in the incidental damage. "Our home…" she whispered. She looked at the devastation above the city in a daze, her hands feeling weak. What were they to do now? They didn't know.
Yakunan couldn't stand it. He was deeply saddened and had to restrain himself from crying again. Xenudah had been his only family for so long, and now…now he was gone to the darkness that corrupted him. Yakunan fell to his knees, not caring that the ninjas watched him, and let out a piercing shriek. He was bawling as the others tried to help him.
"I'm so sorry about what happened to Xenudah…" Kai sighed. "But it's not your fault…"
"But I left him there alone!"
"Yakunan, don't you think it would be wrong of you to hate yourself? You had no influence on the decision at all. If you had spent all of your time with him over these years, he would have turned evil because the Oni corrupted him. You can't blame yourself for what happens through the force of will of others."
A wave of guilt washed over Yakunan, and his heart panged more than anything else. He frowned at the ground, and he began to choke on his sobs.
"Nya, what do we do now?" Kai leaned down to the ninja, trying to catch his breath. "It's not over! Even without Xenudah, we can still do this!"
"I can't! Don't you understand!?" Yakunan cried. "I can't continue without him...not without my child..." he sobbed as his cries were filled with despair. "He was my family… He was everything to me…"
"Yakunan…" Kai kneeled down to the ninja, concerned about his sanity. "You need to calm down!"
"He's my family! He…he was everything…" he wailed loudly. "He was my only child…my only light…" He held his head in his hands. "He pushed me aside!" He looked up at the ninja and their mentors. "I fought for him…but now it doesn't matter…does it!?" He sobbed even more loudly. "He won't accept my help…"
"Yakunan, you have to calm down," Kai said.
Yakunan began sobbing more, and he was ignoring the world around him. "What do I do without him…" He looked at the others with a distraught face. "What do I do without the only family I have left…?"
Yakunan couldn't control his emotions anymore. He continued to cry, calling out for Xenudah, but nothing he said or did could change the outcome. His pain and anguish were only growing, and he began sobbing more, eventually curling into a ball.
"…this is all my fault…" he cried, and he hugged his knees tightly. "Everything is my fault…" He began to cry more. He reached out his arms for his son. "Xenudah…"
Kai caught the distress of the former Overlord and tried to comfort him. "Yakunan…you have to calm down!"
"I just…I just want my son back…" He held his head in his hands and tried to collect himself.
"We're going to try our best to stop the Oni, and get your son back, but we need your help, Yakunan." Nya pleaded.
"I…" Yakunan couldn't handle this anymore. "I can't… I just…can't…" He wept over the loss of his son. "I miss you, Xenudah…"
"Don't cry, Yakunan…"
"I miss you, Xenudah…I can't take it!" He covered his head with his arms and stopped crying. He had lost his will to move on. "I can't do this… I can't…" He shut his eyes, trying to remember his son. He loved his son so much; he didn't know how he was going to move on. He didn't have the will to. His body was shaking violently, and he was visibly emotional. His cries had no end in sight.
Yakunan had reached his breaking point. "I can't handle this…!" He screamed at the top of his lungs and began to sob. His ugly sobs echoed around the ruin that had once been the beautiful city. He was completely broken. Yakunan didn't even try to stop his sobbing or composure—he was too distraught.
"Yakunan, please don't cry…" Lloyd tried to get his former adversary to stop crying, but it was in vain.
Yakunan's cries were only growing.
"You can't give up!" Lloyd told Yakunan desperately. "We need your help to fight!"
"He was…my family…he was everything…" Yakunan continued to shake, and he held his face. He felt like he was going to tear himself apart. "My heart is broken…" He continued to sob. He tried to hold his sadness inside of him, but the pressure was too much. He could barely get the words out. "My son…"
"Yakunan, you have to calm down!"
Lloyd leaned down to his former adversary and tried to calm him down. "Yakunan, we can do this, but we need your help."
"What am I supposed to do?" He sobbed. "What am I supposed to do!? I don't know what I want to do anymore… I don't want to be alone…"
"You don't have to be alone." Nya kneeled down beside him. "We're here if you need to talk."
"Why…why did you leave me, Xenudah!?" Yakunan began to shake again. "I can't do this…!" He held his head. "I can't do anything right…!" He shut his eyes; he was trying to hold himself together. "I can't even protect my own family…"
"Yakunan…" Nya placed a soothing hand on the former Overlord's shoulder. "I know it hurts, but we need your help to fight the Oni. To get your son back."
"I can't do it…" He opened his eyes, and he looked up at his comrades. It was clear that he had reached his breaking point. "I can't do anything… I never could…" He continued to cry, and his sadness was amplified. "I never could protect what I loved… I always broke my promises…"
"Don't say that." Lloyd stepped up and tried to reassure Yakunan. "You're strong, okay?"
"I'm weak…" he shook his head, crying even harder. "I'm weak… I know you guys hate me… I know everyone despises me…" He sobbed even more, taking everything out on his friends. He couldn't stop himself. "I killed people… I abandoned my own son… How am I supposed to go on…? How…?" He shook, and he started to cry even harder. "I knew this would happen… I'm done… I'm sick of fighting… I'm so sick of this!" He sobbed.
Kai and Nya tried to comfort him. "No, Yakunan, you are strong… You are a hero…"
"No, I'm not strong… I broke my promises… I never kept my promises… I never could do anything right…"
"You're strong… You're a hero…" Cole continued to try to console him. "Your son needs to know you won't stop fighting to get him back."
"It's going to be okay–"
"No!" Yakunan cried. His voice was more desperate. "Don't touch me!" He held his face, and he began to sob. "I can't do this… I can't leave Xenudah! I can't live without him… I can't do this…"
"You have to, Yakunan." Nya said, trying to encourage him. "We have to."
"No… I can't…" He continued to sob. "I can't do this, please don't ask me to… I can't… I can't…" He curled into a ball and sobbed hard. "Xenu, come back to me!"
"I'm with you, Yakunan. We're all with you." Jay said, and he placed an encouraging hand on his other shoulder. "We'll be here for you."
"I know your path was rough," Garmadon sighed. "But please don't give up. You've shown you deserve a second chance. We need you on the team. We need you to help us fight."
Yakunan continued crying and shaking. He was trying to hold himself together. He was trying so desperately to hold back his overwhelming shock and agony. He had limited his self-sobbing to a few times, and he was able to calm down, but this was his breaking point. All he could really do was mourn the loss of the child he knew and adored so deeply.
"I'm sorry. I never meant for this to happen," he whimpered. He struggled to fight through his tears, and he continued to whimper. "I never meant for you all to get hurt. I never meant for this to happen to anyone..."
Jay tried to comfort him. "We're going to try our hardest to get your son back. We will succeed."
Yakunan allowed his eyes to shut as he took in Jay's statement. "You're right… I shouldn't be wallowing in the shadows for so long. Xenudah needs me… I need to stay strong, and I need to be here for him…" He glanced at everyone. "I don't want to be a burden; but at the same time, I want nothing more than to be near him again…" He continued to cry. "I want him back so badly…"
"I know you miss him greatly, Yakunan. We'll work together and get him back."
"It won't be easy, but we have faith in you, Yakunan."
"Let us not give up," Garmadon said. "We'll take down the Oni and get your son back."
"Please, help me fight! I'm so close to being free!" He continued to cry. "I need to be strong… I need to fight for Xenudah. I have to get him back."
