Renascence 2010 | Chapter 09: Yggdrasil

"Mai! P-Please, no, n-no!"

.

. .

. . .

A.R. 325. Garderobe Academy.

"Keep quiet! She's coming!" Shoving the two into the nearby classroom, Mai silenced them. For a tense moment, they heard the clicking of footsteps across marble. A shadow appeared under the crack of the door, and paused.

What was Miss Maria doing here so late?!

It was what? Almost midnight?

Squirming from the corner, one of the girls she had shoved covered her mouth. It was to avoid huffing in utter irritation. Eyes glared at Mai within the dark, waiting for the footsteps to continue on.

They finally did so; Miss Maria moved down the hall opposite from whence she came. Once all was quiet, the girl spoke. "Mai, where are you even taking us?"

"Beats me." Mai shrugged. "Where do you want to go?"

"Y-you don't…—" Clenching her hands by her sides, Natsuki opened her mouth. Flabbergasted, she stared in the darkness, the trio's appearances barely visible within the moonlight.

Calmly, Sarah stood between them, much to Natsuki's absolute confusion. How could the Coral be so relaxed about this?! "Sarah!" She harshly whispered, attempting to gain an answer.

"W-well, it's better than not being able to sleep." Sarah stammered, her hands wringing together.

"Mai, why did you even bring her? She's a young girl, she needs her sleep!"

"Says Natsuki, who made her junior do her homework…" Mai shot back, snickering to the muffled noises of the older girl's stuttering.

"She offered." Her only defense, Natsuki scowled and crossed her arms. "Can we at least get out of this room, now?"

"Who are you? The Princess?" Rolling her eyes at the Ariesian, Mai shook her head. She manoeuvred towards the windows of the classroom, and looked outside. Upon this movement, Sarah slinked after her, the girl twitching as Natsuki barked.

"The door's this way!" Swinging an arm towards the barrier, Natsuki gaped at them as she was ignored.

"Yukariko-senshi keeps this window unlocked, dumbass." As if by magic, the Zipang-royal deftly swung the window open. It'd be a tight squeeze, seeing as it opened within the middle. But they were all thin enough. Not to mention, this classroom was on the ground floor anyhow.

Scoffing at the name, Natsuki begrudgingly met them at the window. "Stop calling me names, Tokiha." The older girl grumbled, shooting another glare at her.

Sarah shifted; Uncomfortable as she peered out of the window. "Who goes first?"

"Volunteer." Mai snickered, ignoring her grumpy girlfriend in favor of helping Sarah through the window.

Jumping through the window, then landing upon the pebbles of the path, Sarah glanced around quickly. On this side they were right beside the forest; even from here, she could hear nocturnal insects. They sang away, and swiftly she gestured to Mai to follow. "It's clear, Senior."

Natsuki huffed, edging closer to Mai to help the younger woman Otome through the window. "Don't scrape your knees, Princess." She shot the petty insult back, holding onto Mai until she was safe.

Checking the classroom behind her, the eldest of the three scrambled through the window. She fell, rolling once she hit the pebbles. "Ow…"

A loud snort released from Mai's nose, whilst Sarah hurriedly covered her mouth. The two quietly laughed, and Natsuki hissed. "Nothing! Say nothing, you didn't see anything!"

"Don't scrape your knees, Princess." Mai parrotted, impersonating the elder. She propped her hands to her hips, then leaned down to level their gaze. "It seems you slipped."

Glaring, Natsuki pushed herself up and shoved the younger woman back. "If you'd slipped, I wouldn't have laughed." She jut her thumb to the redhead, crossing her arms tight.

"Trouble in paradise?" Hearing that voice, Natsuki stiffened up. Oh, no…

Stood just by the corner, barely in view, was the newly appointed Archmeister. Shizuru's back was facing them, and her arm was loosely folded across her stomach. Just slightly, she peered over her shoulder to them. An expression of mirth was plasted upon her lips, amusement highlighted within her eyes. "Gallagher, Tokiha… Kruger?"

The way she said her name… Natsuki shuddered, feeling creeped out. "Have you just been… standing there?"

"It appears so." Shizuru seemed to enjoy her reaction, not to mention Sarah's when the blonde tried to duck into a bush.

"Er…" Natsuki turned to see the elder woman better, rubbing her hands together nervously. "Are we in trouble?"

"I am not Miss Maria." Shizuru confirmed. She looked around carefully, then spun on her heel. Heading towards them, her lips curled as Sarah paled. "No, you are not. But only this once." Within her hand was a cigarette holder. It was around ten centimetres in length, and was made of… jade? Natsuki's eyes shot towards it instantly, and she frowned. Shizuru smoked?

Lifting the holder to her lips, crimson kept firmly locked to the three. Taking an inhale, the cigarette at the end lit up the darkness around them. Lowering the device, Shizuru smiled as she exhaled; Silvery smoke trailing out in a curling ribbon.

Natsuki felt uncomfortable watching this.

"If none of you get caught." Shizuru started, glancing towards the tip of the cigarette. "My lips shall be sealed." Tapping the device gently, ash was pushed from it, and onto the floor. Slipping it back to her lips, she crushed the glowing ash under her foot.

"T-then we're free to go?" Sarah questioned.

"If we don't get caught, Sarah." Natsuki repeated, glaring at the blonde girl. "When did you start smoking?" She murmured to Shizuru, stepping a little closer to the elder woman.

"Natsuki is so cute." Shizuru avoided the question, watching the younger woman turn back to Mai. There was no doubt a flush to her cheeks and a glare now…

Getting a funny look from Mai, the Archmeister cocked a brow. She looped an arm across her middle, breathing in more of her cigarette's smoke. Shizuru held her breath calmly, then slowly released the smoke from between her lips. "Well then. Off you trot, before Miss Maria begins her patrol outside."

. . .

. .

.

"Mai!"

Air poured into her lungs, but the burning sensation around her didn't relent. Shooting her eyes open, Mai coughed. Her throat, it was constricted, it scorched, tore at her throat…!

"Don't move." Sarah inwardly scrambled, wanting to move the injured woman but knowing it wouldn't be best. What could she do? Yohko couldn't come to them to help; That damned dragon and those clones.

"S-Sa…?" It was a jumble of words which tore from Mai's throat. This caused Sarah to backtrack on herself. Instead, she neared Mai silently. She dared not touch her; Mai looked so delicate, so… broken.

"Mai…?"

"Pathetic." The voice of Rena above her jarred Sarah from her thoughts. Glaring up to the clone for a moment, the blonde trained all her attention back to Mai. She could be gone in a moment…

Ayane peered down upon them, lifting her gaze to Rena. "This threat is taken care of." She announced, tilting her head as she hovered closer. "What is our next priority?"

The clones zoomed together into the real Rena. Upon this action, they disappeared from existence. Angling her head towards Ayane, then back to Mai, and Sarah, she spoke. "Kagutsuchi will lead us to the next HiME." Whoever that was.

Ayane nodded to her, eyes set on the dragon now. Sarah stared up to them, a little shocked. How could they… just ignore her, ignore Mai, now? Kagutsuchi gave a soft noise, though loud enough to startle the blonde.

The dragon began to move high into the sky to find the new HiME. Ayane followed, Rena beside her as they rose. Sarah stared until she couldn't see them anymore, eyes dragging back to Mai.

"A-ah—" She needed help, but… who wasn't busy? Wracking her mind, Sarah input a link into her GEM. "Laura, Rosalie?!"

"Hey, whoa, whoa." Faint static was heard as Laura was fed into the intercom. Concern was held within her voice, and so she spoke quickly. "Sarah? What is wrong?"

"I-it's Mai! She needs help… now!"

"Where are you?" Laura asked, holding Rosalie's hand as they stalked the corridor. She had just tugged the blonde away from a nasty crumbling wall… They must have sustained damage to the academy, which meant…

"On the steps leading to the Gakuenchou's office!" Sarah looked around again, eyes back on Mai. "It's clear, Mai needs to be moved!"

Fragments of Mai's robe had crumbled off entirely. Underneath this materialised armour lay her scorched clothing. Across the right side of her body, from her torso to her face, it was burned. The blood was almost slimy, it made Sarah want to throw up…

"S-Sarah…" The Meister ragged. "I don't th-think I can…"

"J-just, stop talking, okay?" Sarah swallowed thickly, meeting Mai's eyes once more. "Laura and Rosalie are going to help us, okay? Just… Please, stay with me."

"Blondie, we're helping Sarah and Mai." Laura could still hear the Column through the link, leading Rosalie cautiously outside. They weren't far from the steps… No one was around. What was happening?

Either way, they took this chance whilst they could. Making a mad dash towards the steps, the pair got a glimpse of the retreating dark-valkyrja and dragon. Rosalie hesitated, but Laura dragged her. "We can't stop!" Laura hissed.

Tearing across the corner of the cliff edge, and towards the steps; they were both derailed from their tracks. The steps were completely smashed up and scorched along with a section of the cliff face. Quickly amongst this chaos, their eyes pinpointed Sarah, the Ariesian cooped close to Mai.

Mai's head was tilted upwards against the stairs. Her spine rested uncomfortably against these steps. Upon their arrival, she didn't notice them, simply huffing out, staring up into the clear sky.

"Whe—"

Ending the link, Laura let go of Rosalie's hand and walked over carefully. Was Mai-? No, she saw the shuddering of her chest; The Princess was breathing. Looking back to her former junior, the Romulus Lutecian gestured she stay back.

"Sarah, I'm here."

Picking her head up, the Column rapidly gestured to Laura closer. "W-we've got to… check her…"

"Just calm." Laura spoke, kneeling at the wounded woman's side. Those burns looked frightening. "Mai, can you hear me?" The older woman spoke softly, trailing her eyes down to the Princess' legs. Was her spine injured?

Could she breathe properly?

"Sarah? Has she been breathing well?" Swiftly she asked this, her stern violet eyes locking to Sarah's emerald. "Sarah?" She repeated, making the blonde jump.

"N-no she h-hasn't."

Mai's breathing was ragged. Burns trailed across Mai's throat, which determined her worries.

"We need to get her to Yohko. Fast."

Laura looked back to Rosalie, ushering her closer again. The blonde checked their surroundings as she bustled over, determining it to still be clear. "I'm going to pick Mai up, you need to take a hold of Sarah." The elder spoke to her, the Column quirking a brow.

"Ah…" She guessed she may need to be restrained; If Mai screamed… she might panic again. Sarah nodded to Rosalie, the younger blonde gently taking her hand to help her up first.

"I've got you, Mai." Laura murmured, gingerly slipping one arm under the Princess. Her forearm was around Mai's neck tenderly, and gently, she touched along her back. "Tell me if it hurts, alright, Mai?"

Mai nodded woozily, her arms limp against her sides. She couldn't feel any pain, it was just cold. Mai could feel herself slipping… "N-no…"

"You hold on." Laura ordered down to the Princess, curling as she picked her up. "Rosalie, alert Yohko."

"We'll lead the way." The youngest volunteered, steering Sarah with an arm as she initiated the link. "Yohko, Mai has been badly injured and burned." She tried to speak lowly, eyes scanning the sky for any enemies.

"I'm not sure how long she has." Laura added, adjusting her stance, Mai was deadweighting her. An arm was hanging, whilst her head rested against Laura's upper arm.

"What is the state of her throat? Is she breathing?"

Rosalie looked back to them, speeding up a bit with Sarah in tow. "She is not breathing well, this is of the utmost of importance… Unless the Gakuenchou is down there with you?"

Laura glared at the youngest's back, comforting Mai as they hurried.

"The Gakuenchou is safe, get Mai down here quickly!"

Oddly enough, there was no rumbling to be heard of. Taking this as another advantage, Laura tried to speed up as best she could. "Rosalie. You're going to have to keep the door open for me." She called over to the curly blonde.

Keeping her arm delicately around Sarah's form, Rosalie nodded.

"Mai." Laura spoke down to the redhead quietly. "Are you keeping with us?"

"Y-yes—"

"I've got the door." Rosalie had ushered Sarah in, informing Yohko of their arrival. She held the door as promised, worried for the Princess in Laura's arms.

Yohko could fix her… Right? She was their resident mad scientist, basically. If she couldn't… No, that wasn't even an option at this point.

Wait. The underground was their most protected area of the academy.

"Oh, no…" Laura muttered. "Rosalie, the lift. Quickly." Sharply, they huddled into the cramped area; luckily it was already awaiting them. Had Yohko sent it up ready for them? Either way, she was thankful, and gently adjusted Mai in her hold. "Mai?"

Laura was beginning to feel a sickening dread.

Rosalie kept a hand on Sarah, trying to keep the older blonde calm. Was the Princess…?

Laura heard her weak breathing, relief filling her briefly. The lift was slow in its descent back to the underground, the Lutecian inwardly cursing it. Yohko needed to make them faster for emergencies…

"Can't you make the lift quicker?" She heard Rosalie hiss.

"You do realise what Mai's reaction would be?" The doctor scolded them through their intercoms. She wasn't playful; Yohko was serious, and determined. This side was only ever shown during intense emergencies.

"Right, alright…" Laura held Mai gently, still able to feel the troubled breathing. As long as she was alive, there was a chance for recovery…

As long as Mai was alive, there was a chance for their survival.

The lift finally met its destination, the doors opening to reveal Yohko crowding the entrance. "Try to keep the students back!" She barked to the others, beckoning Laura to follow.

Yukariko, Carla, and Shizuru were down here. They backed up towards them, backing the students away. Carla's eyes momentarily caught Laura's - they held concern. Laura nodded, frown marring her features. She wasn't sure if the students that saw would be the same again, yet this was the way of war.

Noticing Shizuru, Laula mouthed a question. "Natsuki?" They definitely didn't need the Gakuenchou seeing Mai like this.

"Bring her to the ward." Yohko ushered frantically. Entering the room which had previously been used those months ago, she switched the lights on. They hummed into life, and upon those moments, she strode to the bed. "Get Sarah out of here."

She was going to have to manually switch Mai's GEM off. They needed her out of that robe, and quickly.

Rosalie grasped onto the older blonde's sleeve and tugged her from the room. "W-wait, but-!" Sarah was quieted with a free hand, and tried to break away.

"Sarah, please… Calm down. Mai is safe now." It wasn't Rosalie's voice in her ear, but Shizuru's instead. Sarah succumbed to the restraining, nodding against the hand covering her mouth. It was removed, the younger Column sucking in a strained breath.

"How about I take you to Natsuki?" Shizuru spoke quietly. She held onto the younger Column, and ignored the burning stares of students. Honestly, she wasn't sure this was the best route to go. But… Sarah's best place would be beside Natsuki right now.

Whether good or bad.

Staring as Yohko rushed around Mai who was placed down atop the bed, Sarah nodded. She softly shook, then sharply turned her gaze.

"Alright… Let's take you to Natsuki." Shizuru gingerly helped Sarah stand fully, waving Rosalie off to deal with the students. She was also eager to see the Gakuenchou; Not having been able to since this moment.

"T-the… Rena said that they were targeting another HiME." Sarah informed, trembling from worry still. Shizuru's brows furrowed, nodding to the statement. "You did a fine job, Sarah."

Led away and into the crowd, Sarah abruptly realised she was still materialised. But most of the Otome were. Should she stay in her robe? What if the dark-valkyrja made it down here? Surely not? The lift had a trigger mechanism, nothing co-

"Sarah." Shizuru's voice met her ears once more, the two standing still. "Without your help, Mai would have died. You rescued her."

Still, Sarah closed her eyes and released a thick breath. A faint trickle of calmness and relief hit her. The younger Meister nodded along before she opened her eyes once more. "Thank you, Shizuru…"

"I think it was Meister Mai…" "Meister Mai? How could she fall that easily?" "But isn't she super-powerful?" The murmuring hovered amongst the students, and Sarah had to force herself to not snap. It wasn't the students fault.

It was Schwartz's fault.

Further away and the whisperings were no longer able to be heard. A tapping starts to echo, with interval stops along with a harsh murmur. Sarah relaxed a little more, knowing it was more than likely the Gakuenchou.

"Kruger. Stop tapping." They heard Mahya growl, getting closer to where Natsuki was being watched.

"Shut it, Blythe."

Natsuki didn't want this as much as anyone else! Surely Mahya knew this? Her ears twitched upon Shizuru, and Sarah's arrival. Her path derailed, she shot her gaze to them. Her features twisted, instantly noticing Mai wasn't present. "A...aa." Looking away, she latched her teeth to her inner-cheek.

"It is not what you think, Natsuki." Shizuru spoke softly, Mahya quirking a brow as she stood from the floor. Kruger was driving her crazy… Maybe she could leave her with Sarah?

"It… isn't?" Natsuki somehow doubted that immensely. Looking at the blonde Column, she strode closer for an explanation. Shizuru caught her arm, edging her from touching Sarah.

Holding a breath for a few moments, Sarah peered away. She couldn't bear to look the elder in the eyes. Let alone explain it straight away.

"I-I can't. Not yet."

"What?" Natsuki's brows furrowed, her gaze switching between Sarah and Shizuru. If the Column couldn't say what was wrong with Mai, then… Natsuki stared between the two, Mahya noticing and catching the Gakuenchou before she could try to break past them.

"She's stable…!" Sarah managed. "Yohko has her…" Pushing from the Archmeister, the Ariesian strode away to the back of the chamber. Before long, she climbed down the stairs which led underneath the lab platform.

Mahya felt Natsuki relax, and let the younger woman go. "Is she going to be alright?" Natsuki asked quietly, searching for Shizuru's gaze. The Archmeister gave a soft smile, though the younger woman could see she was unsure.

"We've got Mai, that is the good news." Mahya muttered. Inhaling, then letting the breath go, Mahya paused. "Miss Maria still hasn't shown up."

"Monica is keeping her busy?" Natsuki suggested, hunkering back toward the floor and wrapping her arms around her knees. "Shizuru, you're okay, right?" She asked, seemingly already assured that the Archmeister was fine.

"I am doing my best." Shizuru smiled sadly. Really she wasn't sure. Everything was far too chaotic; they were currently under attack. At any moment they could be wiped out.

"..." Natsuki stood, rubbing a hand along her jaw and fiercely furrowing her brows. "We have to go up there." She decided, easily shoving Mahya away when the older Column tried to stop her from charging towards the corridor.

This was a suicide mission, wasn't it? But what could they possibly do? Die like dogs underground, or die fighting? The world would see them as cowards if they didn't fight at least.

The ground trembled, this time even underground. She staggered, but managed to barely catch herself. Mahya, and Shizuru were on her tail, the two refusing to give up.

The Gakuenchou stormed halfway down the hall before she was grabbed, this time by both the Column and Archmeister. "Natsuki!" Shizuru harshly whispered into her ear, pulling the younger woman closer to her and from Mahya's grip.

"Natsuki, you cannot go up there." The elder's speech changed, touching anxiously as she gripped onto the younger woman's jacket sleeve. "You will die."

"Shizuru, I'm a HiME. They're looking for others, they will find them no matter what. Maybe… I can distract them, enough for something to happen that can save us?" Natsuki tried to pull from Shizuru, but the elder held tight.

"That doesn't matter!" Shizuru hissed. "You're the Gakuenchou, a Column, the leader of Garderobe! If you die, all of us do!"

Natsuki winced, hanging her head as she tried to think. "No… If Fumi goes, we all do. Garderobe can handle losing a leader if there is another to take its place. Garderobe will not survive with no one to rise to the ranks." She tried to reason, but knew Shizuru would never let her leave the underground like this.

"If you go, I'm coming." The Archmeister insisted.

Growing tired of their little argument, Mahya groaned. "Let's have the best Otome go to the surface." She spoke, and the pair looked at her flabbergasted. "You wanted a suicide mission?" The Column eyed the students carefully, hoping they wouldn't hear into their debate.

Natsuki stared at Mahya, scowling at the interruption. "Just who do you think is the best Otome?" She snarled, obviously upset at the inclination that it could be Shizuru. If the Archmeister went, so would she.

"Christ… this isn't the time for arguing, Kruger!" Another rumble sounded, this time far too close to home. What were they doing up there? Mahya peered up to the ceiling, her brows knitting together.

"...Archmeister, Gakuenchou, you need to see something." A link in their GEMs, Natsuki caught Shizuru's glance. What was that?

"Securing Garderobe." A foreign voice also sounded, monotonous and feminine. Natsuki was sure she had heard it before.

Shizuru grasped her sleeve, dragging her towards the dispatchers and their monitors. "What is happening?" She asked, though the scene playing out on the screen quickly answered her questions.

Boisterously, a woman stood in a heroic stance; The fallen Kagutsuchi laying before her within indented stone. "Haha! Not even a good fight!"

Wearing a trench coat of sorts, from what the imagery depicted, the woman carried a… rocket launcher…? The Gakuenchou brushed past the crowding students, and Meister alike. Who was thi- "E-eh." Shock-still, Natsuki stiffened, then pointed at the screen. "Why is my mother here?!"

"Multiple Intellectual Yggdrasil Units, proceed with the capture of Schwartz minions." Saeko Kruger's voice emitted throughout the underground lab. The voices of confusion thundered around, many staring between the imagery, and the Gakuenchou.

"Capturing targets. Proceeding with code Valkyrja." Abruptly, dozens, if not hundreds of gynoids swarmed behind Saeko. All appearing the same, these feminine droids rushed down the hill at top speed.

The camera jolted to and fro, almost as if it was embedded into a gynoid's chest. This was confirmed, the camera abruptly changing to another.

Clasping her hands to her temples, and rubbing them, Natsuki shook her head. She wasn't sure whether to be proud, ashamed, embarrassed, or concerned for her mother.

"My mother… is outside. She just took down a dragon. I've… I've got to go help her, I think." Natsuki seemed at a loss of what to do, almost laughing at the manner that her mother was saving them. "We are being saved by my mother and a gynoid army."

It was so ridiculous, it was amazing.

The gynoids, Natsuki noticed, were all dressed in odd, blue robes of some kind. For a right limb it consisted of a blade; was this…-

"Miyu. She made Miyu into an army?" Too busy within her own shock, Natsuki registered nothing but the footage. The more she stared, the more baffled she became. Miyu. Their longtime guardian and protector had been mass-produced into a death-bot army.

"I think I need to sit down…" A sponge… Did Yohko have one? Anything to relieve this migraine coming along…

The doctor was too busy with Mai- Mai! Natsuki whipped her gaze back, but Shizuru blocked her sight from the room. The Archmeister seemed just as surprised as she did, if not impressed.

"It seems a… very effective strategy." Shizuru murmured softly, others watching with a slack-jawed expression.

"Shizuru, should we… go up and help?" Her eyes nonetheless drifted over Shizuru's shoulder. She found the doorway blocked however, sheets of metal protruding across it.

Was it too dangerous? Would the… err… Does the Miyu army recognise her? Would-

"Deploying search party for survivors." Saeko's voice boomed. She was then seen kneeling down, restocking her rocket launcher. Or whatever that thing even was.

"Is there a way to speak to her, up there?" Natsuki asked one of the dispatchers, trying to find the intercom when the woman proved baffled and useless.

"Calm down, Natsuki…" Shizuru grasped her shoulders, giving a firm rub before pressing a button on the keyboard.

The students huddled closer to them, trying to figure what on earl was happening too.

Staring at the microphone awkwardly, Natsuki breathed out slowly. "... Mother?" Her tone was hesitant, and she stared at the figure still preparing her weapon. The form paused, and clasped her fingertips close to her ear.

"Natsuki? Are you hurt, where are you-?!" Saeko waved a hand, a Miyu gynoid taking care of what had distracted her. Whatever it was, was silenced with a muffled explosion.

"Mother! I'm… fine, I guess. We're underground, how are you even here?" Natsuki questioned back, watching her mother wave her hand and laugh this time.

From the distance of the camera, she could barely make out the glint of the elder Kruger's glasses. "That's for me to explain later once these Schwartz minions stop causing chaos." Least she had a use for this army she had created in her spare time. Saeko had honestly feared her Miyu bots would go to waste.

"...Alright, um… Do you need help?" Natsuki felt foolish for asking; Her mother had taken down that damned dragon! She just felt an overwhelming urge to see her, in person.

"Not quite yet. I think your old teacher-what's her name… Miss Mariya? I think she's fighting one of the valkyrja."

"A-ah, her name is Miss Maria, mother. She's fighting Monica Julen… Speaking of them, are you fighting against Rena?" Natsuki was utterly just astounded that Saeko was here at all.

The intercom was sounding throughout the whole zone, so everyone heard it. Upon the misidentifying of their strict teacher, some students laughed. Others cringed, many Meister on the other hand were silent.

Nobody could keep up with what was happening.

"Ha! That's her name!" The Ariesian scientist lifted her palm, signalling some gynoids to her side. Moving this hand, she then brought it just above her glasses. "... I don't see anyone. But no, I wasn't fighting any valkyrja. Seems they ran - or in their case, flew the moment I arrived."

That was a relief… Natsuki sighed out, feeling Shizuru massage her shoulders a bit more. So the valkyrja were gone? Except, seemingly, Monica? "Mother, what exactly is happening up there?"

She wanted to go up and see…

"Nothing, no-... ah, there's an Otome fight. Up in the sky, might be your teacher and that Monica person." The beams of light swerved in and out above her head. She was more than sure it was those two. The battle had seemed to be going on for a long time before she had even arrived.

"If Monica is the only one still here…" Natsuki looked up to Shizuru, turning to be able to see her. "Can we go out, and help?"

Brushing her fingers to her lips, Shizuru thought. Her arm curled around her middle as she mused, staring down to the metallic floor. Ayane and Rena had been their biggest concern. Other than the dragon, of course. "Within a group, then yes. We cannot let our guard down with her, however."

A dark-valkyrja was still a dark-valkyrja, after all.

Slowly, Natsuki nodded, and then sighed. "Alright."

"Mahya, Shizuru…" Sarah couldn't, she was no doubt far too worried. Natsuki sighed, a little nervous. "It's just us, then. Us… My mother, and her army. I like those odds."

"Gakuenchou…" Yukariko stood by, comforting one of the girls, clasping her hands in front of herself. "I would like to accompany you." The elder seemed determined, and Natsuki smiled, nodding her permission.

"Alright… Let's go up and help."

Hopefully they got to do something before it was all over.

With Shizuru heading out with her closely, Mahya, and Yukariko followed after. Gradually, as they reached the lift, the noise of chattering decreased. It has been so loud within that old chamber… Natsuki felt as if her brain would implode.

"Your mother is still as frantic yet resourceful as ever." Yukariko commented, the four of them awaiting the lift.

Natsuki smiled, tilting her head. "I wouldn't really… remember any other spastic thing she's done lately. But, this doesn't seem to be the craziest thing she's managed."

Mahya balked, almost forgetting that the Gakuenchou's mind was a little… funny still. Saeko would definitely have fun with that. Mahya cleared her throat, nudging the Archmeister as the lift finally reached them.

Arching a brow down to Mahya, Shizuru tilted her head in question. This curiosity of hers increased, the Mauryan-native hushing into her ear. "Make sure to keep Kruger out of her head, battle might spring forth a few memories and distract her." Mahya whispered, stepping after the Gakuenchou and into the lift.

One Kruger was bad enough. Let alone two? Mahya wasn't sure how she was going to comprehend with this situation. She hadn't personally met Saeko, but she sure damn well knew of her.

Shizuru nodded in mute agreement. Bringing herself to her full height, she side-glanced Yukariko. The teacher had overheard, and just as cautiously, Shizuru scanned Natsuki's back.

She was much more relaxed than earlier. Ever so faintly, the Archmeister smiled.

Natsuki was shifting her weight from foot to foot, eager to see her mother for the first time in ages. She couldn't quite pinpoint the last time… Shaking that away, the youngest of the group stepped close to the doors as the lift started.

Shizuru grasped onto her shoulder, gently tugging her back into the fold of them all. "Don't be so eager." Mahya spoke up again, nudging the Gakuenchou playfully. Natsuki huffed, crossing her arms stiffly over her chest.

This was at least a distraction away from Mai. But they would get to that later. Yohko would be knee deep trying to keep Mai stable. With that thought being pushed away tensely, Mahya wet her lips. "Where're we going to keep all the gynoids though?"

They didn't exactly have the room for this many… visitors.

"We'll figure that out." Natsuki murmured, though rubbed at her chin at the thought. How did Saeko get them all here? She doubted they just marched along; Though the image of that was hilarious…

The lift came to a stop, its doors opening with a quiet hiss.

As expected, the classroom corridors were deserted. Upon entry, the group peered around anxiously nonetheless. It was quiet…

Looking out of the window, Natsuki squinted. In the distance along the path, she could see a group of gynoids. They appeared to be motionless for the time being. Maybe they could guide them to Saeko?

"Let's make it to that group." She advised them, Yukariko silently agreeing with a nod. "I'm sure the gynoids won't attack me." Would they? Hopefully not.

If they did, she could just freeze them… Maybe not all of them, but Shizuru would surely get the rest. Natsuki listened hard as they made their way out of the corridor, Mahya flagging them to a nearby door to exit the building.

They were soon out, and instantaneously, the Miyu bots targeted them. Without a moment's hesitation, the gynoids swarmed Natsuki, surrounding her. "Natsuki, Natsuki, Natsuki, Natsuki! You have grown significantly since the last we saw you! Natsuki!" The bots patted her down quickly, and before the Gakuenchou knew it, she was being dragged. "We'll take you to to your mother!"

"A-ah—" Natsuki was quickly picked up, the group of them carrying her. "Hey! Put me down- Whoa!" The order was obeyed at a rapid rate, and the Gakuenchou was set down carefully.

"Natsuki, are you hurt? Natsuki, afraid of heights again? Natsuki, didn't you outgrow that at age seven?"

The three left behind stood motionless. All they could do was blankly stare, unable to register what precisely was happening. Before long, the Miyu bots picked Natsuki up again, and zoomed to wherever Saeko was.

"This is… too insane." Yukariko muttered, skimming her fingertips along her forehead. "I feel like I'm in a dream, an alternative universe where everything is wrong. Was I drugged in my sleep?"

"No… But we might want to save Natsuki. I'm sure this is overwhelming her just as much as it is us." Mahya seemed amused, but also a little put off. "Let's follow them."

Natsuki at least felt safe; Gaze rising into the sky to watch for the battle overhead. If Rena and Ayane returned… She hoped her mother and these gynoids could save them. "Natsuki, your brainwave pattern is damaged. Natsuki, does your head hurt?"

"Wha—" Broken from her train of thought, Natsuki opened her mouth. Brainwaves? Oh. "Err. No. Not now, I'm fine… thanks." She blinked, and without warning, the gynoids halted.

Yelping, the Gakuenchou flew from their hold, and landed smack-down in front of Saeko.

"My Natsuki!" The gynoids surrounded them in a circle, the rocket launcher falling from Saeko's arms. Tackling her daughter to the ground, the elder rubbed their cheeks together.

"M-mother, no, your glasses are digging into my cheek!"

Having caught up with the Gakuenchou, Mahya snickered softly to the reunion. "Well, it seems like Miss Kruger has everything- Er…" The gynoids had separated to let them see, Saeko's glasses having been shoved off.

Staring, Mahya could barely tell who was who, save for the trench coat.

Adjusting herself and reaching for her glasses, Saeko cleared her throat. She stood at her full height, her height barely taller than Natsuki. "I apologize for making it so late. You see, transporting my little army here was quite the challenge."

Cleaning her glasses on her trench coat, she propped them back in place. The feat appeared unsuccessful however, and she took them off. "Natsuki!" She pouted. "My glasses are broken!"

Ah. This woman. Yukariko stared at the CEO. She was absolutely befuddled.

"Well, you broke them on my face!" Natsuki pouted back; Cheek red with irritation from the spectacles digging into her skin. The agitation didn't last long, the younger woman now tackling her mother.

Mahya snickered, making sure to keep a look out around them. Though, the gynoids seemed to have that job covered…

"Nat-tan!" Saeko happily held her daughter close, easing her back and checking her over. "I just couldn't believe it! No one lays a hand on my Natsuki."

Now that Natsuki thought about it, she understood why she had desperately wanted to enroll into Garderobe. This woman - she was crazy!

"A-aa. Mother. Please, I am alright."

"Hm, Gakuenchou." Yukariko spoke, catching the youngest Kruger's attention. The teacher's hands were still clasped, but she peered up into the sky. The Miyu gynoids were doing the same, following two beams of light.

One fled, but the other halted.

Something strange was happening.

"Huh…" Natsuki stared up to the beams of light, her mother doing the same. "I hope Miss Maria is alright…" The Gakuenchou murmured softly, watching the fleeing light. There was something familiar about the sight…

"Natsuki, does your head hurt? Natsuki, your breathing has changed. Natsuki, are you alright?" The gynoids instantly turned their attention to the youngest Kruger, swarming in on them a little closer.

"Natsuki?" Shizuru softly inquired, laying a hand onto the younger woman's shoulder.

"Ah… It's fine, I'm fine." Natsuki assured the gynoids and the elder, shaking off the faint pain between her temples. The burn at her hip was back, and she covered it with a furrowed brow. She needed to have it looked at…

Once the retreating beam was well away from the grounds, the last lowered slothfully. The group of Miyu bots gave it no regard, so they could only assume it was Maria.

"Hey, she's on her way." Mahya spoke up. The rest who hadn't noticed, followed her gaze, and gradually, Miss Maria came into view.

With her young appearance full fledged, Maria floated a few feet above them. Suspiciously she regarded Saeko and the gynoids. She was unsure what action to take.

Amazingly enough, the retired Otome had barely any injuries. The most evident wounds of what she did have was a mere gash across the temple. She appeared extensively tired however, her eyelids drooping ever so slightly. "Gakuenchou, Columns, Steinberg." She nodded. "... Saeko Kruger, and… company."

"Miss Mariya—" Natsuki covered one of the gynoid's mouth, the others following suit and falling silent. "It's Miss Maria." The Gakuenchou firmly enunciated, the gynoids murmuring among themselves.

"...Miss Maria!" They spoke again once they achieved the right pronunciation, Saeko grinning proudly.

"Are you alright? That was one hell of a fight." The CEO spoke, winding an arm around Natsuki's waist. She tugged her daughter into her side, giving no mind to the struggling younger woman.

"Says the woman who took down a dragon." Natsuki heard Mahya mutter under her breath.

Yukariko, in response to Maria landing, hurried towards her. The elder woman planted a palm against her arm, as if to refuse help. This was disregarded by the fellow teacher, Yukariko having nothing of it.

"Miss Maria. You're worn out, you need to rest."

"Sorry to butt into this lovely reunion." It was Yohko. The group except for the bots, and Maria almost flew out their skin. The intercom blared from one of the Miyu gynoid's, the bot inhumanly still. "But I thought I might add that Tokiha is perfectly stable."

"Mai's alright?!" Natsuki barked, forcing Saeko to cover her mouth. "Natsuki, not so loud." Her mother snickered, though let her go quickly.

"Saeko, are you alright-?" The questioning ended quickly, Saeko grinning at the gynoids. "Miyu, don't you love them?" Natsuki quirked a brow, trying to find the named one in the sea of gynoids.

"Miyu is here?" It couldn't have been the one with the intercom, so…

"No. I do not." Within the group of bots, the gynoids reacted to her. They sharply turned, surrounding Miyu. "They are hive-minds and do not share my intelligence programming."

"Miyu is wrong! We are not hive-minds! We're your sisters, Miyu!"

From within the cluster, Miyu replied only once. "No."

"Oh! Miyu!" Natsuki was relieved to see the original android, and grouped closer to her as if agreeing. "They are a little… intense, mother."

"I like them intense." Saeko grinned, light reflecting off her glasses once more as she cackled. "Besides, the army worked perfectly! Oh, here comes more!"

Haphazardly the bots ran in formation. Their arms were lifted above their heads, and without a moment's hesitation, halted.

"G-get your hands off me!" The screech came from atop them, and the Miyus stared upwards.

Tilting her head, Mahya stared over to the bundle. She recognized that voice… if only from Butou. That seemed like ages ago, now.

"Shiho?!" Natsuki barked, glad the girl was alright. She left the group, with a struggle as the gynoids tried to take a hold of her. To keep her safe? Surely, she would be fine going from one group to another, right?

"Gakuen-chooou?!" Dropped, Shiho was winded as she landed upon the dusty floor. Coughing, and propping herself upwards, she shot her gaze up. Staring first at Saeko, then Natsuki.

"Saeko, Saeko, Saeko!" The group which transported the student scurried towards the elder Kruger. "We rescued her from Hazakura Ayane! However we confiscated a dangerous item from her! A… Faki-Faki?"

Saeko's brows furrowed, a bit of confusion being shown. "A what?" She questioned the girl, Natsuki, at her side. Shiho didn't answer, too busy looking between the two Kruger women.

"Oh! It's her weapon, a… Maki-Maki?" Natsuki offered, though she seemed unsure. Was that even the name, or just what she said when she used it?

"What's going on?!" The group looked back down to Shiho. She looked absolutely dumbfounded. Her expression alone was one of shock, her eyebrows furrowed with her mouth agape.

"My mother… and her army saved us." Natuki tried to explain in a minimalist style; Even she didn't know the full details. "Oh, uh, give Shiho back her Maki-Maki. Please."

"If Natsuki insists." The one gynoid with the device manoeuvred out of the crowd. Once doing so, she leant down and passed the Maki-Maki over. The exchange was awkward, Shiho taking it cautiously.

Removing her gaze from the bot, and over to the two Krugers, Shiho opened her mouth. Closing it abruptly, she shot up, brushing her uniform down. "Eh- but the dragon?"

"Taken care of." Saeko.

"The three… women?"

"Retreated." Saeko.

"Wha—" Shiho blinked. Silently, she moved back slowly, falling in place beside Shizuru and Yukariko.

"Mm… Sort of all… safe, now." Natsuki murmured, still a little shocked from it. "Mother, how did you even manage to get out of Aries?"

"Heh… That's actually a really funny story, my Natsuki!"

"...Mother, don't call me that, please?" Natsuki flushed darkly, trading a glance with Shizuru. Her mother spoke like her lover did! That was… weird.

The Archmeister was gracing an odd expression. She appeared to be deeply in thought, almost not noticing anything. Shizuru was in her neutral thinking position, fingers grazing her lips. Looking down to nothing in particular. She blinked when Mahya propped a hand to her shoulder. Honestly, Shizuru couldn't make heads or tails of this. For years she had known of Saeko's eccentric behaviour. But this was something entirely different; yet Natsuki had said this was nothing?

Were these gynoids truly more powerful than Otome?

It was… concerning. She frowned.

"Shiz!" Mahya hissed at her, and she jumped.

"Back on earl, Viola?" Saeko asked, snickering to herself as she stood beside her daughter. Natsuki and the elder Kruger had their gaze on Shizuru, one with a frown and the other with a smirk.

Shiho was still glancing between the two. She was confused as to how the Gakuenchou's mother seemed to have their invaders running. "Are we safe?" She asked, looking to her side for the Archmeister.

"Not yet." Maria spoke. She ignored the gash across her temple, even the blood which dried in her hair. Whether it was through being hardened by battle, or sheer determination, Shiho didn't know. Her teacher appeared… off almost. It was stranger still to see her leaning her weight against Yukariko.

Had that battle with Monica affected Maria more than she liked to admit?

"The enemy might have retreated, yes. But this means nothing. They may attempt another strike the moment our backs are turned." Miss Maria pushed away from Yukariko. The fellow teacher shot her a pointed look, but this wasn't taken note of.

"That is true. I suggest we retreat back to the underground, and rest." Natsuki spoke softly, raising a hand to her temple. There was an underlying ache; How long had it been there? Something was trying to break free… A memory? More anxiety?

Saeko noticed, frowning as she snapped a finger. The gynoid closest to Natsuki stepped even closer against her back, raising its hands. It cradled the Gakuenchou's brow and back of her skull, seemingly emitting a scan.

"Ah- No, no thank you." Natsuki slipped from the odd hold, nudging the gynoid away carefully. "And mother…" She locked emerald to emerald, Saeko tilting her head. "We don't have much room, these bots might… scare the students."

"Alright. Fine." Exterior broken, Saeko sighed. Lifting a hand up gradually, this signalled the gynoids to focus upon her. Abruptly, they swarmed behind her, slotting perfectly in single-file.

"I suggest underneath the lab itself." The true Miyu spoke. She halted beside Saeko, and clasped her hands together. She took no notice of Natsuki's staring. She knew why, after all, seeing as she wore a maid's outfit. "Please stop staring, Natsuki." Side-glancing the Gakuenchou, she narrowed her framed crimson eyes.

"Mother… why is Miyu dressed as a maid with glasses on…?"

"I thought she looked the part for Garderobe." Saeko shrugged. Slipping her fingers to her lips, she whistled. Without a moment's notice, the army of Miyus began marching towards the academy.

"Our students aren't dressed like maids…" Natsuki murmured, almost falling into line with the gynoids before she stopped. Addressing the real Miyu once more, the Gakuenchou hummed. "...You look good in that."

"Natsuki, please, not in front of your wife." Saeko gasped obnoxiously, tracing over her daughter's jawline as she passed.

"W-what?!" Natsuki flushed, rubbing her face to get rid of the touch. Urgh, her mother… Always so embarrassing!

Her mother and Shizuru? This was going to be her death! Hesitantly, Natsuki glanced towards Shizuru. She was still cupping her jaw in wonder, but their gaze locked. Something within those ruby irises highlighted something within Natsuki.

But what?

"Ah… Mahya, make sure my mother gets set up, and safe." Natsuki spoke to the elder Column, the Mauryan-native nodding. "Yukariko- Ah, actually… Miss Maria, could you escort Yukariko to the infirmary, please?" The Gakuenchou knew that the epitome wouldn't willingly go herself, so perhaps that little bit of change would do it.

Maria sent a confused glance her way before stiffening, and nodded sternly to the younger woman. "Come." She murmured, leaning into Yukariko as they walked.

Natsuki edged close to Shizuru, looking at a stunned Shiho and beckoning her close. "Let's get safe, and we'll try and piece together what just happened."

Slowly Shiho nodded, Shizuru faintly smiling.

"You don't want to see Mai first?" Shizuru asked quietly.

"I am unsure if I could handle that." Natsuki answered just as softly, looking up towards the sky. Has this war just begun? Her mother couldn't protect her for the rest of her life…

"I just… want to know if she's okay." Rubbing the back of her neck, Natsuki pointed after the trail of others. "Come on."

Looking between Shiho and Natsuki carefully, Shizuru's brow furrowed ever so gently. The Gakuenchou encouraged her to continue, and for a brief moment, Shizuru closed her eyes. "Do you want the full details?"

"Might as well know before I see." Natsuki reasoned, clearing her throat. She mentally tried to prepare herself, hoping for the best.

"This is not the place, Natsuki." She peered down at Shiho. The student didn't seem to notice, too focused upon the gynoids in front. "I will tell you later. Alone."

That didn't sound good. She hadn't been alone with Shizuru since before training with… Forcing the memory from her thoughts, Natsuki cupped her brow again. Mai was alright, Mai was alive.

She followed after the others, unable to keep Mai from her thoughts for long.

From what she could assume, Mai was currently on life-support. Everyone was skittish around her, almost like they were avoiding the answer. In the back of Natsuki's mind, she knew what had happened.

Eventually, she, Shiho, Shizuru, and a cluster of Miyu gynoids were packed into the lift. Natsuki wondered if the given weight was even safe, but shoved it to the back of her mind. Instead, Mai quickly took over once more.

What would happen if Mai died?

"Natsuki—" The gynoids were silenced, picking up on the Gakuenchou's mood. Instead, they respected her space, not speaking another word. Natsuki sighed softly, appreciating the reaction.

If Mai died… She wasn't sure if all of Earl would be the same.

The metallic doors slid open smoothly, and what lay before Natsuki surprised her.

Students - many of them were interacting with the gynoids curiously. Some were even having conversations with the death bots. Exchanging a look with Shizuru, Natsuki's brow creased. Scanning her eyes across the lab quickly, forest irises latched onto her mother, and Yohko.

They were beside the computer, chatting away as if can be.

How… strange yet perfect they looked together.

"Two mad scientists…" She muttered under her breath.

A noise at her side startled her, Natsuki shooting her gaze over. It was that girl, Nina… Tomoe too, and the latter did not seem pleased. "You stupid-! Don't get sick on me!"

Grimacing, the Gakuenchou shuffled away from them quickly and bumped into another. This was way too crowded!

"Oh… Gakuenchou. Sorry." She had bumped into Nao; A gleam of irritation quickly settled into emerald as the redhead avoided her gaze.

"I'm… sorry about Meister Mai." The Diamond student spoke awkwardly. Lime irises caught sight of Tomoe, and Nina, Nao cringing just as harshly as Natsuki had. "I heard she stalled Schwartz long enough that… these freaks saved us." Nao's eyes darted again, to Natsuki, then to the real Miyu.

Finding her between Yohko, and Saeko, she glared. Stoic crimson greeted angry green.

"She did." Natsuki murmured, finding Nao's line of sight. "I used to think they were odd too, but… Be grateful for them. Without them, we would all be dead." The elder whispered to the redhead, clasping a hand to the younger woman's shoulder. She squeezed, trying to comfort before patting and easing past her.

Staring at where Natsuki had touched her, Nao slowly brushed at her shoulder. She gave the Gakuenchou a weird look as she passed, followed by Shizuru. What was that all about?

Cocking a brow, but then spotting Shiho trailing them, Nao's confusion heightened.

Just what was going on around here? Her head felt like it was spinning, and not just because she was looking at Shiho.

"Redheaded girl!" One of the bots exclaimed. Nao reeled, overwhelmed and dizzy. She fainted, falling back into the gynoid's arms. Upon the impact, she flinched before losing consciousness.

Natsuki winced, having heard the fall. Reaching her hand back for Shizuru, the Gakuenchou tried to find a private spot to talk.

Under the platform would probably be for the best. The chattering was loud enough that their voices wouldn't be overheard. Not to mention, Natsuki doubted there wouldn't be many there.

"Shizuru… when do you think we can lift this lockdown?"

"I do not know, Natsuki." The Archmeister murmured almost instantly. She looked tired - they all looked tired.

Natsuki exhaled slowly, raising her hands to cup her face. This war… She wasn't sure if they would survive it. "Alright… Tell me what happened?" She lowered her hands, looking Shizuru in the eye.

Leaning against the pillar of the platform, Shizuru settled her hands together. Sliding her fingers together mindlessly, she exhaled quietly. Smoking sure could be a stress reliever right now… batting the thought aside, she began.

"Mai is in a critical but stable condition. During the battle she was severely burned down her right side. Yohko is more than sure this requires skin grafts." Shizuru paused, waiting for Natsuki's reaction.

"She… Needs skin? D-do we… Do we have what's necessary for her to… improve?" Natsuki forced herself to speak, immediately clamping her teeth to her cheek after. Mai had been burned… No doubt from the dragon; But, she was stable?

Staring at the metal floor, the wrinkles of Natsuki's forehead intensified.

"She was unable to breathe properly, so Yohko had no choice but to inject a tube into her throat." Adding the information, Shizuru was unsure whether it had been a good idea. She studied Natsuki for any sign of increased negativity. What she feared was answered, and her mind argued with itself.

Graphic details had never been Shizuru's best option. Nor was it for Natsuki hearing them. But it was needed for this situation.

Natsuki remembered the feeding tube that had been down her own throat, and suppressed a retching. The sort of tube in Mai's throat was of course different, no doubt inserted directly through her neck-

Covering her mouth, the Gakuenchou dry heaved and stiffened. She could not react like this…

She felt a calming, yet rough hand graze her shoulder. Looking up, it was Shizuru - of course it was. The Archmeister stood before her now, worrisome eyes greeting her. "Natsuki. I know hearing that she is on total life-support is difficult. But please, hear me out on this."

Swallowing thickly, Natsuki closed her eyes after blinking back hot tears. She slowly nodded up and down, uncovering her mouth. "What else?" She asked, keeping her eyes closed and trying not to become sick.

"She is in a medical coma within the Otome Stasis Chamber." It was a simplistic answer, but it held far too much meaning.

Stasis…? Natsuki opened her eyes, staring up at the elder. "...Does that mean she'll be alright?" That chamber was used to keep them alive, and heal them, right? She couldn't be sure.

"I cannot answer that for you, Natsuki." The Archmeister smiled faintly. Instead of planting another hand to Natsuki's opposite shoulder, she lured her in. "That is why you must see her." Wrapping her arms around the Gakuenchou, Shizuru held her in place tenderly.

"I-I… I have to see her?" Natsuki stammered, unsure if that was the best thing. She leaned against Shizuru; Content to be comforted with the physical touch and affection.

Controlling her breathing to be less haphazard, the younger woman wet her lips. "Okay."

For better or for worse, she would get through this.

A.R. 323. Garderobe Academy

Why was this place so ridiculously big? What was with the horrific uniforms? They were supposed to be soldiers of some form? Not prissy girls with feather dusters! Just why were all of this girls fawning over the older ones-

So many questions filtered through Natsuki's head haphazardly. Was this honestly the renowned Garderobe?

"Mama… I don't think I want to be here anymore." Tugging at the hem of her skirt, which was far too short, Natsuki puffed her cheeks out. "Mother, did you hear me?" She grumbled upon no response, looking up to the woman at her side.

Saeko had heard, but was too busy fawning over the way Natsuki looked in her uniform. "Nonsense, sweetheart, look at you!" Fixing the skirt and nudging the girl's hands from it, the elder cackled.

With her eyebrow twitching, and her skin flushing, Natsuki scowled. "You're a creepy mother, you know that?"

Surrounding them were students and Meister alike. All were within uniforms, and none of the Otome were materialised. It felt strange here. Almost ceremonial. Of course it was a ceremony, but even so…

"You came from Zipang all on your own?" The tone of voice was incredulous, and Natsuki peered over to the two girls.

One was a carrot-redhead with purple eyes. She had a short but bulky appearance; for some reason she instantly annoyed Natsuki. The other was much taller, perhaps more so than Natsuki. Her skin was a dark bronze, which made the turquoise of her hair clash oddly. These two together looked like a culture shock waiting to happen.

"Do you want everyone finding out?" The Zipang girl replied. Her accent was heavy, yet all the pronunciation was correct.

Studying the other two, Natsuki bristled when her mother tried to fix her hair. "It is fine!" She hissed, not wanting to be embarrassed in front of potential rivals.

"Natsuki, your hair is getting a little bit wild. Far too long… You're sure you don't want mommy to cut it?" Saeko asked, fussing over her more.

"Mother!" Natsuki grumbled again, slapping the hands away and fixing thick coal from her eyes. She hoped no one had overheard that.

This woman would be the death of her one day.

Ignoring her mother for the time being, Natsuki took in their environment. The architecture was definitely… classy. Garderobe appeared how it had with all the information she had been given back in Aries.

Why did it have to be so big though?

Judging by the system here, there would only be twenty-four fellow Corals? Hopefully she wouldn't end up at the bottom. Although Natsuki doubted that. Some of these students looked like wimps.

"Ah, there's Maria Graceburt. You be good, Natsuki, stand up straight." Saeko whispered urgently down to her daughter. She fussed over her hair once more before Natsuki managed to fend her off.

"Mother, please—" Left alone now, Natsuki sighed with relief and straightened up subtly. There was another woman at the Gakuenchou's side, one she didn't recognize. She doubted her mother did, either…

She wore a similar dress to the elderly teacher, but in the colour blue. The brunette appeared nervous, sky-blue eyes cautiously watching Maria. Was she a new teacher? Natsuki pondered, staring at the woman unconsciously.

Natsuki wasn't sure what to make of her.

Looking around, she noticed that she was one of few who had a parental figure accompanying them. Others must be… orphans. That made her feel uncomfortable.

"Mother…?" What was she going to ask? She didn't know.

"I wonder if we should go speak to them, hm, Natsuki?"

But who? Natsuki didn't like the looks of some of these people. But then again, she was going to have to make friends somewhere. Garderobe Academy wasn't the place to be alone. Natsuki would find herself crushed within months, if not weeks.

"What is your name?" The redhead asked the taller girl from those few seconds ago.

"Laura Bianchi. I'm from Lutecia: Romulus."

"Ironic." Another voice intruded, and Natsuki spied upon them. This newcomer was shorter, barely so then the redhead. She propped her hands to her hips, and stared up at this Laura figure. "I'm from Lutecia… Remus." The girl had pointed pigtails framing either side of her side. These black locks would waft around, sometimes making the student appear ridiculous. "Carla Bellini." She added quickly.

Laura appeared to stiffen, the redheaded girl seeming uncomfortable. "That so…" The taller of the three murmured, hostility sparking between them.

"I think I might go over to those girls, mother." Natsuki looked up to Saeko, pointing discreetly to the group.

"Mm? Alright, Natsuki, play nice. I may have a talk with Maria myself."

Nodding to the elder Kruger, Natsuki could only hope Saeko didn't embarrass her further. Awkwardly, Natsuki trailed over to the three girls. It was the vermilion-redhead who spotted her first, and in response, smiled.

Barely managing to stop herself from flushing, Natsuki made a stop between Carla and Laura. Doing so might be a mistake on her part.

"I do not think it would be wise to start a fight on the first day." Natsuki spoke, taller than Carla but barely shorter than Laura. The latter regarded her with a huff, but nodded in agreement.

"I have better things to do at any rate." Carla dryly responded, leaving the group without another word. Laura glared after her, but seemed placated once she was gone.

"Who are you?" The taller girl tilted her head, finding the other to be faintly familiar.

"I am Natsuki Kruger, from Aries."

Echoing her name, Laura furrowed. The redhead on the other hand, blinked.

"You're the daughter of Saeko Kruger? The CEO of Kruger Industries?"

Why was it always the company, and never their nobility? Natsuki nodded, pointing to her mother preying on a few other girls. "She is over there."

Laura seemed a little stunned, looking between Natsuki and Saeko.

"Please don't say you can't tell the difference…" Natsuki groaned. She covered her forehead, then looked away. It was just glasses! Why did people find it so difficult?! Sure, the natural genetics were there, but she wasn't a… clone! That'd be too creepy.

"Oh! Natsuki!" Saeko strode towards her, grinning softly. "You didn't think to pack your reading glasses, I found them on your dresser before we left." Offering over the case, the elder ignored the stifled groan of her daughter.

"I do not need to use them, mother…" Natsuki hissed through her teeth. The tone was merely taken no notice of, and Saeko arched a brow. "I will be leaving you to your own devices Natsuki. I will see you later at the ceremony." With a kiss to the cheek, and another disgruntled struggle after, Saeko was on her way.

Glaring at the two before her, Natsuki exhaled. "What are your names, anyway?" She may as well play the part. Being sussed out for eavesdropping on the first day would do her no good.

"Oh. Laura Bianchi." The taller girl nodded to her, nudging the redhead at her side when she was too quiet.

"Ah- Tokiha Mai." Natsuki's reaction was cute. Mai smiled, bright violet eyes focused on the noble girl.

"Please, just call me Mai, Natsuki-s-." The Zipang-native caught herself, then paused. "And please, you too, Laura."

Mai grinned. "I hope we become good friends."

"I… am sure we will." Natsuki smiled back. There was something about that redhead…

. . .

. .

.

By the doors which led to the ward, Natsuki uncomfortably inhaled. She wasn't ready for this. But Natsuki doubted she ever would be.

Catching sight of the soap dispenser beside the large doors, she strayed towards it. "Shizuru… did Yohko say when Mai will wake up?" Pushing the device so the pasty fluid ran into her hand, she looked at her.

"...No." Shizuru murmured quietly. She focused upon a group of students - Diamonds. Chie, Akane, and Nao were comforting an Amethyst. Irina Woods? What was she doing inside here instead of with Yohko?

Then again, she must've been removed after catching sight of Mai. And didn't Nao collapse? Shizuru narrowed her eyes towards the fiery redhead. Unsurprisingly, the nominated student indeed looked rough.

"Shizuru?"

Blinking, the Archmeister returned her gaze back to Natsuki. "Are you ready?" She asked quietly, watching the younger woman massage her hand nervously. She must be mentally preparing herself…

"I think so." Natsuki quietly murmured, taking a deep breath. The air tasted colder down here; With the scent of stinging astringent. Nor did the mixture of so many people down here help.

Activating her GEM's intercom, Shizuru spoke softly. "Yohko. May we come in?" There wasn't an answer for a moment, Shizuru frowned. This concern was broken however, the doctor piping up.

"Ah, sorry."

The buzzing of static still dominated the intercom, but Shizuru took no mind. The huge doors grinded open slowly. It was just enough for them to slip in, the barrier quickly being closed after.

It smelt stronger of medicine in here; The far too clean scent burning at Natsuki's nose briefly. Covering it for a reprieve, the Gakuenchou looked to Shizuru for her to lead. She remembered this place; Where she had woken from her coma.

"I wouldn't enter too quickly." Yohko warned through their intercoms. The humming of machinery was heard, soft beeps accompanying it. The scientist was as straightforward as ever.

What did that mean? Natsuki traded another cautious glance to the elder, uncovering her nose and mouth. She had gotten used to the strong smell, and nodded faintly.

Within those few seconds of absorbing this information. Natsuki's eyes directed to the centre of the room. She spotted Sarah - her back was facing them, and she was sitting down.

Natsuki had never even heard a thing from her. She stared down at the bed; or in this case, the Otome Stasis Chamber. Wires and machinery were scattered all about the place. It was much alike to how it was when Natsuki awoke. Yet more…

Desperate.

Mai was inside… Natsuki forced down a swallow, clutching the edge of her sleeves within her palms. She was frozen in place, unsure if she should step closer or let Sarah be there alone.

"I must start the surgery soon. So you only have a few minutes." Yohko issued. Honestly, with such a big job ahead of her, Yohko wasn't sure if it was even possible. They had no time for external help here, let alone bringing in more people. Garderobe didn't have the room nor the resources. "Sarah…" Yohko propped her hand to Sarah's shoulder.

The blonde barely reacted.

"If anything happens, shout for me?"

Only faintly did Sarah nod.

Natsuki swallowed hard again, stepping closer to be at Sarah's side. Eyes staring at the wall opposite them, the Gakuenchou slowly lowered them onto the chamber. Mai… She must have looked worse before being entered into stasis; Even so, she looked lucky to be alive.

Watching the younger, Shizuru thought better than to lay a hand on her shoulder. She directed her gaze to Yohko instead, the two having a silent conversation.

"I am unsure of her condition." Yohko spoke quietly to her. They stood some feet away from Sarah, and Natsuki, out of earshot. "I've shut her GEM off completely for her own safety. The nano-machines were manipulated." Discreetly glancing at the two Ariesians, Yohko strode to a selection of counters.

Wafting her fingers for the Archmeister to follow, Yohko activated her laptop. The holographic screen came to life, and upon this happening, Shizuru frowned. On the screen were three separate images.

One was of Mai's torso, whilst the other two were of odd markings. They were both red, but had major differences.

"I found these a few minutes ago." Yohko altered the screen, zooming on one image. The marking was circular with a spot within the centre. On the top of the curve lay an angled line. "I have come to believe this is an ancient HiME… birthmark, of sorts."

"Birthmark?" Shizuru furrowed her brows, tilting her head. "Surely, she was not born with this?" She had never seen it before, after all. Though, Natsuki would have more experience in that department.

Not that she was jealous, or angry, but it was true. Looking over her shoulder to the Gakuenchou, Shizuru started to speak. She stopped, however, at the odd way Natsuki was holding herself.

The Gakuenchou had a hand to her left hip, gripping almost as if in pain. Her face, however, was utterly smooth of any emotion. In fact, she almost looked… confused. Had the weight of the situation not hit her, yet?

"Natsuki?"

Continuing to stare down through the glass of the chamber. Natsuki's eye grazed across the burns of Mai's skin. They were covered by a thin sheet of nano-machine encased cloth. It protectively wrapped around Mai's form in a way where it didn't harm her.

Was Mai in pain? Did she feel anything…?

Tracing her eyes upwards, Natsuki's eyes remained upon the breathing tube. It was sickening how it had just been… impaled into Mai's throat. Whether or not it was aiding Mai with her breathing, it was still so…

"She isn't ready yet." Shizuru concluded with Yohko. Her tone was steady, but worrisome. Ruby irises lowered to Sarah; the fellow Column had made absolutely no reaction.

"Agreed." Yohko sighed softly, returning her view to the monitor. "Now, this one…" She began, directing Shizuru's gaze to the other marking.

It was constricted in appearance, and red. It was alike in kin to a star zooming through a square. This image, unlike the other, appeared to be of a photo instead of a sketch. Was this from a living HiME?

"Earl HiME marks are much sharper and smaller." Yohko said. She pointed to the image, and abruptly Shizuru realised who this was. "This mark belonged to Rena Sayers." It was barely underneath the breast, and was faintly glowing. "This one… is Mai's."

This particular mark was atop the right breast, the same pattern. Shizuru's brows furrowed as she studied it, a low hum escaping. "This is quite interesting; Though, Natsuki does not have a mark as such."

"I wouldn't say that." Yohko whispered, giving a gesture to the Gakuenchou. "The Founder said she was a HiME, and look at how she is holding herself."

Glancing over again, the Archmeister nodded faintly. "I will… Investigate when appropriate."

Yohko nodded, agreeing as she documented the shots and minimized them on the monitor. "I am afraid it is time for the surgery, Gallagher, Gakuenchou." She spoke, turning back to them.

Neither reacted as if they had heard, or even as if the other was there. Shizuru's brows drew together in worry, delicately laying her hands upon their shoulders.

"Sarah, Natsuki, it's time to leave."

It took a pull from the Archmeister to knock sense into them. Sarah was confused, just as much as Natsuki. But she unconsciously stood. Staring down at Mai for a few separate moments, the blonde turned. She disregarded Shizuru almost completely, hesitantly heading to the doors.

Natsuki didn't seem pulled, leaning close to the chamber. With a soft murmur, she stood and straightened up. "Good luck, Mai." She whispered, turning to meet with Shizuru.

Blinking at the older woman, something seemed to lighten emerald eyes. "Come, Shizuru… I suppose we need to discuss our next move."

All the Columns needed to be present. But judging by Sarah's condition, they were going to be one short.

Upon their exit, Natsuki stared. Many of the students were now gathered by the door. Hopeful eyes stared up to the stunned Gakuenchou and Archmeister, rooting them to the spot.

Clearing her throat, Natsuki took a quite cursory glance around. Sarah must have run off… Attention back to the students, she spoke lowly. "Mai is in critical condition, but she is stable. Our hope is surgery at this point, so we will need everyone not to intrude or crowd around."

A few looked a bit dejected to the news, but the Gakuenchou spoke more. "The best thing we can do is busy ourselves, and wait."

Things were beginning to feel heavy again. The abrupt arrival of her mother had saved them, but hanging around wouldn't. "Shizuru. I need to make phone calls."

She hadn't even thought of that. Shizuru sighed, nodding as she clasped Natsuki's hand on her own. Leading her back to privacy as the students dispersed, the elder thought hard about the markings.

Noticing a lack of the gynoids, Natsuki assumed they had gone further under the lab. More space, at least… "I have to call in to Mashiro, and… Takumi."

This was going to have a negative impact on both sides.

Setting the receiver of the phone back into its cradle, Natsuki slowly sank into a metal chair. They were everywhere; Uncomfortable and unyielding. She hoped the beds were better…

Those were two harrowing phone calls, of which she would never want to repeat. Nor would she ever want to receive… Natsuki lifted a hand to her head, rubbing the pressure from a temple. She needed a distraction, and badly.

She had never heard Takumi in such a way. Which was something else she refused to experience once more. Staring at the upper platform of the lab, Natsuki lightly rubbed at the bridge of her nose. "...Shizuru." She called over to the Archmeister.

She heard the elder straighten up; No doubt the woman had been leaning against the wall just outside. "Natsuki?" Shizuru spoke quietly, entering the area. She clasped her hands together in front of herself, looking the younger woman over.

Natsuki gave just a soft smile, but it didn't reach her eyes. "I just got off the phone with Takumi."

Their exchange was silent, neither saying anything. Shizuru didn't know what to say, but began to lift her hand. As she was about to touch Natsuki's cheek, a spark of realisation hit Natsuki.

"What about Ribbon?" Where was she? Natsuki hadn't seen her at all.

"She is fine, Yukariko is now looking after her." Shizuru smiled, though she had forgotten as well. "She does not know the full extent; To her, Mai is just… sick."

Lying to the girl didn't sit right with Natsuki, but what could be done? Ribbon didn't need to be worried, not yet. Relieved, the younger woman breathed out a soft sigh. "Good…" Scooting up in her chair, she rubbed at her back with a look of disdain.

"We have to get better chairs once we're out of here."

"Yohko purposely did it." Shizuru chuckled quietly. "Natsuki knows how anti-social that doctor is."

Upon the thought of the science-engineer, Natsuki quieted again. Resting her elbows atop her thighs, she stared down at the floor.

Yohko was operating on Mai right now.

Forcing that from her mind, the Gakuenchou hummed as she stood. There had been something else bothering her, before Mai was hurt. What Mahya had said when she had been dragged away…

"—step down, or work harder to remember what you are."

That memory didn't sit well with her; In fact, it pissed her off. She was trying her best, damn it! The stiffening of her body caught Shizuru's attention, the elder turning to her.

"Natsuki is upset?" She asked, lifting a hand for the younger.

"Mahya said something that pissed me off." Natsuki grumbled. "I only just remembered i—"

"—I can't believe you threw up on me!" Prying their eyes from each other, they shot their gaze to where the voices came from. It was on the other side of the bottom floor where they were positioned.

It was Nina, and Tomoe.

"I didn't mean to!" Nina hissed back to Tomoe, looking embarrassed. A hand was hung along her stomach, the girl no doubt still feeling ill. They were clean, however, and changed. They must have showered…

"To think you of all people would get flustered with a bit of blood…" Tomoe shook her head, then quickened her pace.

"H-hey!" Clutching at Tomoe's sleeve, the younger student halted the elder in her tracks. "I-um… don't really feel…"

"You're not going to vomit again, are you?" Tomoe questioned, though the queasy look on Nina's face answered that. "Hrmph. Sit, sit down. I'll… find you some medicine." The older girl forced her down against the wall, gesturing to stay.

Natsuki's eyebrows lifted upon the interaction. Although she hadn't heard some of it, she was pretty certain what it was. "...What are those two up to?" She narrowed her eyes from Nina to the retreating Tomoe.

Shizuru smiled at the Gakuenchou, hoping that the flare of anger was gone. "Seems as though something may be starting." The elder whispered, taking Natsuki's hand in hers as they watched.

Tomoe rifled in a few drawers, careful with things she didn't recognize. Test-tubes and the like weren't touched, for fear of contaminating… whatever was there. "Ah, found something." She snatched a small package, making her way through others before returning to Nina.

"Take this."

"Shouldn't we be doing something?" Natsuki stared at the scene.

Nina shot Tomoe a look, then peered at the pack suspiciously.

"I can read it." The elder knelt down, holding the package closer. "It's an anti-nausea medicine. You don't want to throw up again, do you?"

"No." Nina immediately winced at the idea, holding a hand out. Tomoe inwardly sighed; Would she have to do everything?

Opening the small blister pack, Tomoe popped two small orange pills into the younger woman's palm. "Under your tongue. They won't taste good, but it will help."

Even from here, they saw the absolute disgust on Nina's face. She cringed, her features twisting. After a few more moments, the medicine melted. "...Gross." She hissed.

"I know." Tomoe shared the disgust in an expression, shaking her head. "Let's get you some water, you'll feel better after."

Natsuki tilted her head, watching after them. That had been… cute, but she wasn't sure if Shizuru was correct. "It can't happen just so easily as that." She insisted, tugging softly at the elder's hand.

"Of course it can, Natsuki… These events bring people together, no matter how far apart they seemed at first." Shizuru smiled, giving the younger woman's temple a soft kiss.

"Some gross medicine compared to a deadly mission sounds lame to me." Natsuki muttered, Shizuru pressing Natsuki against her own body.

"Not just the medicine, silly Natsuki… Their fighting, the stress of this situation." Shizuru tried to explain further, playing with one of the younger woman's hands. "They realized what they mean to each other, just as Natsuki and I did."

Natsuki tilted her head against the taller woman's shoulder, nodding once. "I suppose…"

"...But." Natsuki huffed, then pushed away from Shizuru. "I want to fight, Shizuru." Natsuki felt that had come out wrong; but either way that's what she wanted. "With Mahya."

"Natsuki wants to fight Mahya?" She could practically hear the elder's brows furrow. "Why is that?"

Rubbing her hands against the thighs of her slacks, Natsuki repeated what the older Column had said to her. Shizuru stared at the Gakuenchou, her stare turning a little hard. "Well, I think Natsuki should go fight Mahya, then."

"I'm going to do it whether you- Wait, what?"

"I said Natsuki should go fight." Shizuru chuckled softly, relishing the younger woman's look of utter confusion. "If Natsuki does not, I may feel compelled to do so for her."

She wasn't expecting that. "Oh. Well… Good, then."

Absorbing the detail of Natsuki's expression, Shizuru turned away. Covering her lips, she laughed silently. "Let's meet with her." Though here Natsuki wasn't going to have any privacy. "But you do know it means fighting in front of the whole academy? Including your mother?" Cocking a brow, Shizuru glanced over her shoulder, gently pulling the Gakuenchou along.

"Well… Can you distract her? My mother's obnoxious cheering can get a little… intense." Natsuki murmured, clearing her throat. In front of the whole academy? She definitely wasn't about to back down from this.

Furrowing thin brows, the Gakuenchou firmed her expression.

They climbed the stairs around the platform which Tomoe had used a few minutes ago. And ironically enough, met her halfway.

Glass in hand, the teal-haired student paused midway down a step. Staring at them, Tomoe blinked, then straightened. "Er-. Gakuenchou, Archemister."

"Tomoe…" Natsuki paused, turning to the girl and holding herself with pride. "If you want to see how I can really fight, grab Nina and follow us. I'm about to challenge Mahya."

"W-what?" Tomoe gawked, remembering how she had sparred with the Gakuenchou. The student had won, or rather… it had ended, after the elder's head had hit the ground hard.

She stared off after the two Columns, wondering just what had happened.

Still within her confusion, she ventured down the steps and towards Nina. Her first priority was making sure Nina didn't throw up - then again, why did she even care? A batch of annoyance filtered into her head.

It was all so… irritating.

"Nina, here." Tomoe spoke upon seeing the girl again, still against the wall. She knelt, offering over the glass of water.

"Ah- thank you…" Before Nina could take it, the elder girl drew it back an inch.

"Go slow, or you'll be sick." Tomoe passed the glass over, watching Nina take her advice to heart. "The Gakuenchou is going to fight Meister Mahya soon." She spoke to fill the odd silence, unsure of what was happening.

Forcing down a swallow after surprise, Nina tilted her head. "What? Why?"

Shrugging, Tomoe simply stood. She brushed past and instead leaned against the wall. Glancing up to the large platform before them, she eyed several Miyu gynoids. "I don't even know why I am helping you, Wang."

"...I don't know either. I kind of thought you would beat me up for throwing up on you." Nina flushed, wiping her mouth with her sleeve as she shakily stood. "I'm glad you didn't though… I feel a lot better." The younger woman smiled, taking another slow sip from the glass.

Tomoe bit along her inner cheek, clearing her throat. "Good." She looked over her shoulder, meeting Nina's gaze. "Finish that, then we'll go watch the fight."

Then again, wouldn't a tolerable relationship be better than outright hatred, Tomoe pondered? She still couldn't remember why precisely she started hating…-ah. Of course. Being embarrassed.

Violet-steel subtly edged towards Nina, and Tomoe's wonderment increased.

The younger girl finished her glass, unsure of what to do with it. Tomoe turned, taking it from her after a moment. "Come on… I want to see which one wins." The elder girl smirked, Nina nodding eagerly.

Perhaps this was something to think more on when there wasn't an ever present danger lurking. Though, it wasn't as if she could shut the feelings or thoughts down. Still… Tomoe turned and led the way where the Columns had gone.

"But if you do throw up on me again…" Tomoe murmured, catching their gazes. "I'll throw you through the library window."

"I-I… I won't." Nina flushed only briefly, catching up to the older girl. They heard a few people murmuring, and Tomoe wondered if the fight had already started. Then again, nobody would be stupid enough to cause a commotion on the platforms. Far too much technology was lying around; Yohko would murder them.

Literally.

Searching for Mahya, Natsuki only became angrier. The words resonated in her head… Shizuru became slightly worried, but was sure the two wouldn't go too far. Hopefully…

Ah, there was Mahya… The Gakuenchou squared herself up, striding up to the older woman. "Blythe." She hissed to get her attention.

Ending what conversation she had with Yukariko, Mahya turned. The two women peered at her within confusion. Sky-blue held worry, brown narrowing.

"Oh, Kruger?" She asked, arching a brow. Looking behind the Gakuenchou, Mahya saw the crowd gathering. "Don't tell me I did something wrong?" A cattish grin etched onto her features. Patting a palm to her chest, this transformed however. "So you've decided?"

"I've decided, alright." Natsuki growled softly, the students around them surprised no hackles visibly raised. "I challenge you, Blythe. We're going to fight." She spat, glaring at the older woman with a sneer.

Mahya seemed confused, if only for a second. "You sure about that, Kruger?" She didn't much like the Gakuenchou's tone.

The white noise of their crowd heightened to the point it made Natsuki cringe. Just at that moment, a sound pierced the lab. It was enough to make the large group groan, sounding like a screeching microphone.

"Judging by the noise someone is fighting. If you dare break even one thing, you're straight into the Founder System."

Natsuki narrowed her eyes at that, though definitely did not want that to happen. "Where can we fight?" The Gakuenchou murmured around herself, a few of the students offering suggestions.

Actually she was surprised that none of them wanted a fight. Not with the chaos which had taken place already.

"Downstairs!" "Outside!" "In my bed!"

Natsui whipped around, mouth open and barely biting back a bar. "Why would we fight outside?!" She turned back to Mahya, the older Column's cheeks red with laughter. The Gakuenchou stared, confused, until she registered the comment.

"Teenagers." Natsuki huffed to herself, shaking her head. "Downstairs, then. Let's go, Blythe."

"You aren't going to butcher that one student?" Mahya questioned, following after her. If it had been a year ago, the Gakuenchou would've burst a fuse. Or if anything, retreated. Mahya had an idea who that might've been…

Naturally some of the younger students tried to follow down the steps. They were deftly stopped by the gynoid army, however.

"Miyu… Miyus. Don't interfere." Natsuki ordered, the gynoids nodding their agreement. "Shizuru, you too." She spoke over her shoulder, slipping her cobalt jacket off.

Watching after Shizuru for a moment, Natsuki spied the woman head towards her mother. Sighing, Natsuki hung the jacket against the stair railing. At least Saeko would be out of her hair now.

Not even a foot off the last step as she turned, Natsuki realised her failure. Finding herself on the floor, the ceiling greeting her, she heard Mahya gloat. Blinking, she winced, her cheek stinging.

"Hurry and stand up, Kruger." Mahya bit. She ignored their audience, straightening herself out and quickly stretching her arms. Once finishing this action, she raised her hands, tensing them into fists. "You wanted a fight. Now you have one."

"Now I have one, indeed." Natsuki growled lowly, working a finger at her jaw before she stood. Barely able to sink into the squared stance she had established with Mai, the younger woman dodged another punch. She followed it with one of her own, to Mahya's ribs, connecting strongly.

The elder Column was winded, and staggered backwards. Hooking her balance back in check, Maya instead scrambled forwards abruptly. The veteran knew how to manipulate people in battle. Whether it be through action or dialogue. "Don't drop now."

Don't drop? Natsuki furrowed her brows, clasping her hands together and lifting her arms up. She intended to drop her elbows into Mahya's back, and hard. That damned woman, thinking she had the better of her…

Perhaps it had been on purpose that Mahya had run straight into the hit. Maybe it had been a sacrifice for her next tactic. Mahya had never been this reckless; yet for some reason, she was here.

Juttering down against the floor from the hit, Mahya outright tackled her.

Falling back to the tackle, Natsuki's head met the bottom stair. The gynoids flinched, stiffening in response to the Gakuenchou's order from before. Stars exploding in her vision, her body felt heavy before she succumbed to a heated rage. Lifting her head up, Natsuki struck her brow to Mahya's with a growl.

Watching the scene, Shizuru held a deepening concern. She wasn't a fool, she knew very well this wasn't training. It was an outlet for the two. But even so; if this went too far, would she intervene?

Mahya reared back, trying to blink the pain away before the Gakuenchou shoved her back. Natsuki scrambled to her feet, the sharp sting reverberating through her skull. The room was already beginning to spin, but she cared not.

Squaring her stance again, Natsuki let out a paced breath. Frost danced along the edges of her exhale, emerald eyes turning cold. Shizuru was unsure if the power tap was intentional, worriedly watching.

Perhaps even as it went unnoticed to the Gakuenchou. Even as Mahya herself attempted to warn the younger woman of the underlying danger. Yet it continued, and the fifth Column had no choice. "Natsuki!" Mahya hissed.

Of all times; of all days. Why did Kruger have to lose control? Gritting her teeth sharply, Mahya lent her form downwards. If any Otome materialised and fought down here, the whole lab would go up in flames! Let alone a hybrid with no recording of power!

It was a danger she wasn't going to allow.

The GEM. She needed to disable it.

Natsuki seemed to ignore her attempts to get further attention. The Gakuenchou pursued her with an anger that had no place between them. This fight wasn't just about the two of them, anymore.

Planting a strong stance, Natsuki gripped along the older Column's shoulders. While Mahya tried to reach for her ear, she was stopped; A hard knee drove into her gut. Kruger was… stronger, now.

"S-Shiz!" Scrambling back, Mahya gasped into the intercom. She couldn't see the Archmeister, her eyes solely upon the Gakuenchou.

"What is it? What is happening?" The Archmeister leaned against the railings. That concern had pitted itself into her stomach entirely now. Hesitantly, she looked towards Saeko beside her.

"Your little girlfriend is going batshit."

The feed ran into her intercom, and Shizuru's brow furrowed. "How serious?" From the looks of it, it had been a stupid question. Regarding Saeko's own concern, Shizuru's gaze shot back down to the two Columns.

"Extre" Mahya's voice cut off, Natsuki's hand clenched around her throat. She could feel the cold seeping in; the Gakuenchou's skin exuding it. Hands clutching along Natsuki's wrist, the Column began to panic.

"If this is too much for you, step down." Natsuki hissed, GEM beginning to glow.

The audience grew ever more uncomfortable. By now Saeko had rushed to the Miyu gynoids. She ordered them to make way for the Meister. Perhaps even as students were moved back, that organisation went into reverse instead.

"Seriously…"

Mahya barely heard the scientist's voice blare out, slamming her knuckles to Natsuki's ear. She was sure she had done damage.

The Gakuenchou glowered, abruptly letting go of her neck. She clutched at her ear, leaning down. Yet looked at nothing in particular. Natsuki merely leaned down, an overload of nano-machines swarming the faintly chipped GEM.

A beep screeched within the lab, forcing many to cover their ears.

"Dangerous overflow detected in the Ice Silver Crystal. Proceeding with Lockdown of this GEM."

If Natsuki heard this, she did not seem to register it. Simply, the Gakuenchou rose once more and set cold eyes onto Mahya. The older Column was still struggling to breathe, on the floor where she had been dropped.

Advancing on her, Natsuki raised a hand in the air. The moisture within the oxygen around them swirled around her open palm. Mahya stared, noting the manipulation was exactly the same from the survival hike.

What was she doing? Not a weapon, no… Mahya's breath turned into fog, feeling as though that icy grip was back on her throat.

"Commencing Lockdown."

"Materialise!" Azure illuminated the area, clothes were covered. Nano-fabric was formed to curve over the Gakuenchou's form. Yet this robe was only sustained for a few moments. The levitational bands weren't even incorporated as the Founder successfully intervened.

"Lockdown successful. Overriding the Ice Silver Crystal."

The Founder's voice invaded every intercom within the lab. Yet everything was still a daze.

Mahya stared at Natsuki as the younger Meister collapsed headfirst; even once everything became deathly silent. With her hand still against her throat, Mahya gently massaged it, standing cautiously.

Saeko stared over one of the gynoid's shoulders, deciding to override them herself. Before she had the chance, one crumpled; Sockets iced. Only now did she realise her breath turned to fog as well, and the decreased temperature.

Has Natsuki really done all of that? Carefully, Saeko shoved a few more gynoids out of the way to let Shizuru pass.

"It'd be best if you didn't follow." Shizuru warned her, quickly striding down the steps. Uncaring of her change in speech, she proceeded to near the two Columns.

Mahya was still on the floor, a little shocked. She would think twice about being so short with Natsuki again…

The Gakuenchou lay crumpled; On her stomach in the middle of the floor. Shizuru regarded Mahya with a faintly hard glare, kneeling. Natsuki seemed fine, bruises mottled along her jaw.

Slipping a hand into coal, the Archmeister gingerly felt for the seam at her skull. There was a faint wetness; Whether it be blood or melting ice, she was unsure.

Honestly, Shizuru felt this was all her fault. Bringing her hand upwards, she breathed a sigh of relief. It was just water, nothing more. "Yukariko, please help." The Archmeister rushed into her GEM's intercom.

In truth, Shizuru didn't know what to do.

Would Natsuki need to be… Contained? If so, where could she possibly be held? Shizuru sighed softly, a hand rubbing circles along Natsuki's back.

Mahya finally stood, wincing to the immense pain in her ribs. "She got me." The fifth Column murmured, deciding to sit back down.

Unsure with what to say to the older woman, Shizuru simply stared at her. Ruby irises studied the Mauryan-native, her eyes narrowing. It wasn't like they could ask Yohko, she was still operating on Mai. Who was ironically enough, another hybrid.

Hybrids…

"What happened?" She quietly asked Mahya.

"I think… that hit to the head caused this." Mahya spoke back, referring to her first punch. "She hit the step hard… Kruger was too strong, stronger than she should be." She tried to explain, massaging at her sides.

It was almost as if the nano-machines controlled…-

Thinking on this concept, Mahya stared at the floor. Why did this remind her of something? Has she seen this before?

Wait, wasn't this just like-

Mahya lifted her gaze to Natsuki's body, then to Shizuru. The elder seemed to follow her thoughts, but gave a hard stare in return. This was not to be discussed aloud.

Yukariko gingerly slipped down from the platform, kneeling beside the Gakuenchou. Shizuru shook her head, gesturing to the elder to help Mahya instead. After all, Shizuru wasn't sure how Natsuki was going to react. If anything, she could swing a blow at her.

Everything suddenly felt so…

Wrong.

Natsuki still hadn't moved; The Founder's dealing, no doubt. Shizuru gently caressed the back of the Gakuenchou's head, and sighed. Natsuki would no doubt be hurting when she woke.

Slipping her arms under the younger, Shizuru gingerly lifted Natsuki. She felt… heavier; Though obviously the elder could carry her no issue.

She wasn't underweight anymore.

"Yohko." She softly spoke into her intercom. "There has been a… disagreement. Is the other platform available to use?" She looked towards the lone platform. It had pretty much been abandoned for the past few months. So surely?

"It's free."

"Mahya, do you require medical attention?" Yukariko softly asked, helping her to stand. The younger woman nodded, holding tight around her ribs.

"Yeah, I think I should be looked at." Mahya replied, wincing softly. Shizuru strode towards the platform, cradling Natsuki close to herself.

Shizuru felt a need to protect the younger Meister. Her old habits were coming back to the surface, tainting her exterior. Her mask. She knew it was slipping. Yet… Shizuru didn't care.

If anything it should be Natsuki who gets the medical attention…

The urge to smoke returned to Shizuru, fingers twitching. The jade item was in her pocket; She always kept it with her, though she had been cutting back. Watching over Natsuki, the Archmeister sighed and withdrew it.

Running her fingertips over the item, Shizuru closed her eyes. The color always reminded her of Natsuki's eyes…

Yet, here she was next to Natsuki, unable to see those eyes. It had been a good hour since the Lockdown, yet Natsuki hadn't awoken. Needlessly to say, she jittered her fingertips across the holder. She didn't register the action, simply far too busy thinking.

If Natsuki didn't awaken, what would she do?

Having laid Natsuki against the thick, green carpet, Shizuru could only hope it was comfortable enough. The Gakuenchou's head was against her lap. She could only hope it wasn't irritating the younger Meister.

"I should not have let you fight." Shizuru softly spoke, slipping the jade item back into her pocket. "My dear Natsuki… just what happened to you?"

She knew Natsuki may not even know she was awake to hear the question. Placing her hands along the younger woman's arm, Shizuru rubbed gently. The Founder had done the right thing… Hadn't she?

Would Natsuki have seriously harmed Mahya if not for the Lockdown?

If given the chance, Shizuru believed this may have been the case. Thinking of what Yohko had spoken of, a sudden thought entered the elder's mind. Moving to it,

Untuckling the white dress shirt from Natsuki's slacks, Shizuru skimmed her fingertips against skin. Which side had it been? Reaching her left hand to join the other, Shizuru's expression tightened.

A HiME mark…

She would've spotted such a thing in seconds. It couldn't possibly exist on Natsuki.

Feeling an etching of rough skin against her left fingertips, Shizuru paused. A strange sensation within her head took place; was what she was touching, what she dreaded? Slowly, she peered down to the Gakuenchou.

Natsuki did not react to the touch along the bright red mark on her skin. Not a twitch of a cheek muscle, or a brow. Her features were utterly smooth; peaceful. Watching her, Shizuru smiled softly.

Natsuki had not slept as relaxed in some time.

Perhaps after all this would be good for Natsuki? A Lockdown completely shut the nano-machines within the body down. Going dormant, they would knock the Otome out completely for a set period of time.

Had her HiME nano-machines… taken over her Otome ones? Had they attacked each other? Had Natsuki unconsciously started reprogramming her GEM? There were far too many questions which Shizuru wanted—needed answering.

Leaning Natsuki onto her side ever so gently, the Archmeister looked upon the reddening skin.

The mark didn't give off a feeling; No raised skin or even a heat behind it. The patch of alabaster bearing it is as smooth as the rest of Natsuki's hip. Shizuru sighed, running her fingertips over the mark again.

Had Natsuki's fall led to this? When she struck her head upon the step… Would she lose memories, once more? Remember everything, or not be changed at all?

Just like the imagery of Mai and Rena Sayer's markings, this one was no different. Shizuru felt an alien familiarity to it, a pull. Slowly, she traced the sharp points of the marking, and wet her lips.

So much had happened within a short period of time that… Shizuru simply couldn't keep up. Her shoulders sagged, but carefully rested Natsuki's head against her lap fully again.

What on Earl was happening?

Either way, she would be here when Natsuki woke. However long that took.

"Stop it… all of you, I am fine." Sat against one of the uncomfortable metal chairs, Arika stared down at the floor.

Many of the Miyu gynoids were still frozen in place, adding an atmosphere to the platform. It didn't help to settle Arika's feelings, nor that her friends also huddled close to her.

"Obviously you aren't…" Nina grumbled. What kind of lie was that?

Tomoe was standing directly in front of the younger girl, arms crossed. "No one would be fine with that." The eldest huffed, staring down to Arika.

Least of all seeing that person destroy everything in sight…

Tomoe wasn't even sure why she was here. She didn't exactly like Arika all that much, after all. Why? No clue. But that wasn't the point.

Violet glanced over to russet, and out of the corner of her eye, Tomoe watched Nina.

Erstin seemed to be trying to think of something to say. The blonde hadn't spoken all day, or night. What time was it? Tomoe bristled, starting to get annoyed.

If they were safe, couldn't they exit the underground now?

Nina noticed the eyes on her, picking her gaze up to meet with Tomoe's. "Hm?"

Having not expected the younger student to notice, Tomoe veered her gaze. Even as Nina's eyes narrowed, her gaze burning into Tomoe, she didn't return her gaze. If anything, it confused her actions further, and frustrated her.

What was even wrong with her?

"If it helps…" Erstin spoke. "... I overheard the Meisters saying they seemed hesitant. Like something was wrong."

"Like something was wrong?" Nina repeated, looking at the blonde now. Erstin moved closer, resting a hand onto her shoulder. "They acted as if… they knew what they were doing was the wrong thing to do."

Tomoe noticed the touch, returning her gaze to Nina. She didn't like that. It was childish to do so, yet what could she say? Tomoe had hated this fellow Amethyst for such a ridiculous reason.

She was absolutely flabbergasted. If not becoming obsessive to… do something. Tomoe was desperate to get out of here. It was far too cramped. Not to mention, all these students were getting on her nerves.

Why? Who cared less.

Pulling from Nina, Erstin turned to Arika with a soft smile. "It will be alright, okay?" She spoke lowly, gaining a nod from the younger woman. "Good."

But… How could it? Nina rested her head back on the wall, frowning. Now the Gakuenchou is out…

Not only that, Meister Mai was too. What was going to happen next? Would Miss Maria drop dead out of nowhere? Perhaps even the Archmeister. Cringing upon the idea, Nina discreetly shook her head.

That wouldn't happen. It couldn't.

"I could use another shower." Nina abruptly blurted, flushing as everyone's eyes trained on her. "I-I mean… It's something to do. I feel cold, anyway. I want warmth."

Tomoe stared oddly at the girl, shaking her head. "Where will we be sleeping, if we can't go back up for some time?" She didn't quite like the idea of sleeping on the floor. Especially not if there was going to be snoring keeping her up.

"I suppose the floor…" Erstin mumbled. Shifting a chair up beside Arika's, she quietly attempted to console her. She wasn't very good at it, but she could listen.

"What? You have cold hands and feet or something?" Tomoe muttered to Nina.

"Well… I guess? I just feel cold." Nina shrugged, feeling a bit of her hair slip free of its hold. Sighing, the younger girl eased out the rest, shaking it free along her shoulders.

Watching the feat, Tomoe wasn't sure what to make of it. Not once had she seen Nina with her hair down. It was surprisingly long. Awkwardly looking Nina over once more, Tomoe removed her gaze. Hesitantly, she guided it towards the opposite platform.

She wondered how the Archmeister was feeling…

When will the Gakuenchou wake up? Soon, she hoped…

The pain in her body was overwhelming, but not unfamiliar. Thin brows pulled together to furrow and crease; Keeping eyes firmly shut. "—suki? Natsuki?" Shizuru's voice filtered in, soft and fuzzy.

Like her ears were covered with mittens. Natsuki grunted; the noise little more than just assurance that she was awake. Feeling the elder's rough hands along her cheeks, she heard her speak a bit more clearly.

"Do not move, Natsuki…" Was she checking for a neck injury?

"S-Shizuru…?" Her words came jumbled, yet what she wanted to say sounded perfectly fine. It just came out… awkwardly? Natsuki wasn't even sure how to describe it properly.

"Are you in pain?" Shizuru whispered down, petting through the hair prickling at the start of her brow.

"Uh… A lot of pain, actually." What sort of question was that? She shouldn't be short with Shizuru… Natsuki refrained from opening her eyes, already feeling the effects of the bright lights.

They were still underground, weren't they?

Remembering the particularly nasty bump to the head, along with the fight, she sank. Whether her dead-weighting affected Shizuru, she wasn't sure. But oh, she sure felt… pissed off.

"I really do feel like punching Mahya right about now." She grumbled. But Natsuki felt that would be a bad idea in her current condition. Lifting her hands to her temples, she groaned.

She had a splitting headache…

"I think you've punched her enough." Shizuru chuckled softly, relieved that the younger woman remembered. "Do you… Remember anything else?"

"Anything new, you mean, right?" Natsuki raised her hand, feeling the elder grasp her wrist. She had wanted to cup her brow, but it seemed Shizuru had other plans.

"Your knuckles are scraped…" Shizuru murmured, putting them to her lips. Eyes remaining closed, the Gakuenchou sighed. "Figures… and no, no magical memory restoration."

"Natsuki always did have a hard head…" Shizuru commented.

The Gakuenchou let out a gruff breath, one eye opening to glare up to Shizuru. "Stop being mean to me." She grumbled, eye closing again.

A chuckle sounded, and Natsuki opened an eye once more. "...What are you snickering about?"

"Nothing. It is nothing."

"Sure…" Covering her eyes with a forearm, Natsuki dared to open her eyes fully. Protected by her limb, she paused. "I don't know why I lost control. I was conscious of everything, yet… couldn't do anything."

"You were… impressive." Shizuru whispered softly, unsure of what to say exactly. "So much so that… your little army of Miyus are completely frozen."

Natsuki peeked from under her arm briefly, burrowing her gaze away again. "Heh… I was so formidable, the Founder forcibly turned me off."

Though being next to the Founder's vital electronics was bound to happen to any Otome. But either way, to be considered such a threat was definitely a… boost for Natsuki.

Shizuru smiled, petting over Natsuki's arm now. "I am glad you are alright." Humming, the elder tugged a bit at her sleeve. "But, Mahya is very hurt. I think you made your point, and need to apologize."

By the looks of it, Natsuki may have broken a rib or two against her. Shizuru cringed at the thought. "Are you ready to get up?"

"No, not yet… I don't see why I should apologize, I think the fight called it even." Natsuki grumbled, though knew she may apologize either way. "My jaw…"

"Natsuki is lucky it is not broken."

They were lucky Mahya and Natsuki didn't kill each other. Let alone blow up the academy!

"I should have not let Natsuki fight." Shizuru murmured. Skittering her fingertips across Natsuki's jaw, the Archmeister remained this way. Contently, she rubbed her rough fingertips across the bruise on Natsuki's chin.

"No… it was good, still. That'll shut Mahya up." Natsuki chuckled, grasping Shizuru's hand to hold. "And… anyone else."

"Grumpy Natsuki…"

"Anyway… why are we speaking so quietly?" Natsuki asked. She leaned into Shizuru's hand, and closed her eyes. Why was this woman - even when she was angry with her, so calming to be around? Even during those times they had argued, Natsuki felt so…

"Shizuru… why are you so loving to me?" Natsuki lowered her arm, gazing up at the elder. Shizuru smiled, no doubt thinking it was a silly question.

"I love you, Natsuki. I never want you upset, or to fear me." Shizuru hummed, leaning down to gently peck the younger woman's brow. "But, Natsuki… I will not be letting you be so reckless again."

Natsuki sighed, nodding as she let go of the Archmeister's hand. "I know… thank you." The younger woman grasped onto tawny locks instead, snuggling into her hair.

But, what time was it? There were no clocks down here, and by the looks on it they were on the abandoned platform. Looking somewhat awkwardly, Natsuki found this to be true. "Say, Shizuru. Are we even going up to the surface?"

By now they'd be on the international news. If anyone, especially the media, took notice of this…

"I am unsure of that, Natsuki. Another attack could come." Shizuru had leaned down to allow the younger woman more of her hair, but straightened. "It feels late." Testing the volume, she frowned when Natsuki winced.

"Still need to whisper?" Shizuru lowered her tone again, petting along Natsuki's brow. The Gakuenchou sighed, closing her eyes for a brief moment.

"No… I think I'm okay." Covering her face with a hand, the younger woman hummed lowly. She felt as if she had… been drinking.

It felt like a hangover, yet twice as worse. Perhaps her nano-machines really hadn't agreed with her? Why had she even attempted to materialise? She had so many questions.

But Natsuki couldn't help but stay here. She didn't want to move whatsoever. Just wanted to… lie down. "Shizuru… is this what Yohko had warned about? Was my GEM going to overload?"

"I believe so, Natsuki. It is… very good that we were not in true battle when it happened, and that the Founder stopped you. You could have killed us all." Shizuru spoke so detached about it, petting along Natsuki's head again.

"You would have stopped me, though?" The younger woman questioned, watching the elder shake her head. She wouldn't or couldn't?

.

. .

. . .

A.R. 325. Garderobe Academy.

"So yesterday you risked our necks for nothing?!" Whether they had managed to slip past Miss Maria wasn't the point here. Why had Mai dragged them out at night for nothing? Natsuki couldn't get it around their head. And what made it even more confusing, was the fact Shizuru had played along.

She was the Archmeister right? Shizuru was supposed to be the symbol of the Otome. It was no good letting people break rules, right?

Natsuki glared while Mai just laughed it off, the redhead shrugging as they cleaned their room. "I couldn't sleep; Neither could you!"

"Could have done something a lot more fun…" Natsuki softly grumbled, unaware that Mai had actually heard. The redhead paused in making her bed, flushing as she glanced over.

"Yet you followed anyway." Mai recovered, though just. Briefly she watched Natsuki out of the corner of her eye, studying her. Upon Natsuki sighing, she jabbed a finger at her. "Besides, last time we tried anything, you freaked out."

Still, the elder's expression was funny. Mai had wondered if the Ariesian had burst a fuse. Perhaps several. Thinking about the memory, she stared through Natsuki. Though after a few seconds realised, and quickly pulled her gaze away.

"W-well… You made that joke." Natsuki weakly replied, tucking the blanket in. She sat upon her made bed, sighing. That was a weak excuse…

"It didn't… feel okay. Maybe because we spent the whole day apart before that?" She shrugged, toying with a strand of coal hair. "If we managed to spend a whole day together and then tried…?"

She had no idea why it was so difficult for her. This sexual stuff was… weird. It was almost distasteful. The idea of a body was simply… scary-no, disgusting for her. Honestly, Natsuki wanted these feelings to change, she really did. But how was she supposed to do that?

Having no interest with sex was difficult.

But Mai seemed to want to do it. So if she was able to make her happy…?

Natsuki tugged at her earlobe, clearing her throat. Mai was understanding, but… Sighing, the older girl looked down to the floor. She wanted to…

"Natsuki…" Mai frowned, stepping to be in front of her. She knelt, placing her palms atop the elder's knees. "It's fine… but if you want to try again, we can."

Sure it was the late afternoon, but still… Natsuki felt uncomfortable about it.

"I don't know." She murmured. Planting her hands against Mai's, she glanced away. "...Maybe… sparring will help." Natsuki's tone quietened, refusing to meet the royal's gaze. "As I said, I really don't know…" Her expression twisted into a frown, and she flushed.

"Mm… We can spar. I noticed that after last time, you were a little more… open." Mai reddened; A memory of the elder pinning her down resonating in her mind.

"Oh." Natsuki blushed, clearing her throat. "Then… I would like to try."

Easing back on her knees, Mai hummed softly. "We can't very well spar in the arena, but I wonder if our room is too small for such a thing?"

There was only one way to find out, Natsuki supposed. "Maybe we can… err." Scratching her cheek, Natsuki paused in thought. How was she supposed to say this without it sounding… lame? Or even cheesy to say the least? "If it leads to it, can I try… touching you this time?"

Cringeworthy.

Mai didn't laugh, but merely smiled and leaned up to kiss Natsuki's brow. "Whatever you feel comfortable with, Natsuki. Though, we cannot spar here. Maybe… wrestling?"

Mulling the idea over, the older girl nodded. "Okay… There's enough room on the floor for that, at least."

Slipping her hair clip off and onto the night table, Natsuki wet her lips. "Okay. I think I'm ready." Standing from the bed, Natsuki brushed her uniform down. Though she wondered why she bothered, seeing as…

Shaking her head, she looked down to the floor. "Let's just not do it on the floor, Tokiha." Who's idea was it to make the dorm floors wooden instead of carpet? Then again, wooden floors got noticeably dirty - and quickly.

Was it a ploy made by the academy long ago? A subtle way to keep them on top of cleaning? Then again, who needed a floor when Miss Maria could smell a speck of dust from a mile away?

"We could lay an extra blanket down." Mai tried, though the implication made her flush. "F-for wrestling." The redhead gazed along the floor, returning her gaze to Natsuki.

"That would work…" The older girl nodded, opening the closet door to search for one.

No one ever pestered one another during this time. Most people knocked - well, except Haruka, but she was no longer a student. Natsuki felt they'd be safe doing this. It was just… getting to it.

"This one?" Natsuki asked, sliding the blanket from the closet. It was a spare, but was pretty thick.

"Mm, that one looks like it will work." Mai nodded her approval, checking the door and subtly locking it. If Natsuki was to be comfortable, no one could just barge in.

Natsuki noticed, and flushed, nodding. Spreading the blanket down over the wooden floor, she stood upon it. "This does work…" Who would… start at the bottom? She had to even rephrase that in her mind to stop from cringing.

She guessed it was the one who won the overpowering side of things. They were always rivalling in strength however, so who would win, Natsuki didn't know. It was all about the surprise tonight, it appeared.

"A-are we starting this?" Natsuki hoped she didn't sound impatient.

"Mm. I'll start down." Mai smiled, settling into place on the blanket. Her stance on all fours, an old-fashioned wrestling starting point. Natsuki flushed even so, clearing her throat as she knelt behind the redhead. Wrapping her arms around Mai's shoulders, the elder girl counted softly.

"On three… One, two, three!"

With as much strength as possible, Natsuki pushed. The muscle in her legs tensed upon the manoeuvre, along with the rest of her body. This feat was challenged just as powerfully, the younger female struggling against her.

"You need to put more into it than that."

Natsuki grumbled softly, gripping tight around Mai before throwing her weight to the side. This led the younger girl to become unbalanced; The redhead squeaking softly. Landing on her back, Natsuki blinked in surprise when Mai quickly pinned her.

"H-hey! How did that happen?" The older girl gasped.

"Magic." Mai chuckled, slipping atop her, she trapped Natsuki's arms under her legs. "I'm surprised, Natsuki. Shouldn't you be stronger than this?" Propping her hands to the elder's shoulders, she snickered.

That was surprisingly easy.

"W-well… I'm not done!" Natsuki gazed up at her, swallowing harshly. This position was a little awkward, but…

Mai tilted her head, persimmon hair slipping over her ear. "Natsuki?" She lifted a hand from the older girl's shoulder, poking her brow. "Still there?"

"You're… really pretty, Mai." Natsuki whispered, lifting her freed arm to tuck the lock back into place. Before the younger woman could react, she had been laid onto her back with Natsuki atop her.

"Haha! Never let your guard down!" The elder girl was straddling her hips, having rolled Mai over.

"O-oi! Sor" Biting her tongue, arms outstretched, Mai stared up at her. Blinking, Mai abruptly frowned. "That's cheating." Mai murmured quietly. She made no attempt to free herself, merely lying there underneath the elder. If anything, this might even help Natsuki.

She wasn't sure; but it was a risk she was going to take.

"Sneaky." Mai spoke instead, raising her arms. Natsuki flinched, as if preparing for a takedown, but it didn't come. Instead, the elder girl found Mai's arms wrapping around her neck.

"O-oh." Natsuki flushed, a little embarrassed for flinching. Settling down closer to Mai, she wet her lips anxiously.

Personally, Mai was shocked. She had expected there to be more… rough and tumble. In a way, she was disappointed.

Locking her wrists loosely, Mai spread her legs so the elder slipped against her. "So, Natsuki. What are you going to do now?" She grinned up to the Ariesian noble, regarding her silently.

The way Mai asked that made her face redden worse. "I… I don't know." Natsuki answered, clearing her throat as she beared down upon her. "Should there be more?"

"There doesn't need to be any, Natsuki… Whenever you decide you're ready." Mai smiled, stroking gently along the nape of her neck. The elder felt… relaxed; Utterly so, now. Taking a breath, Natsuki lowered herself further and captured Mai's lips.

. . .

. .

.

Forearm covering her eyes again, Natsuki slowly woke up. Why had that memory chosen this time to seep through? She missed Mai terribly, hoping upon hope that she was alright. Her sleeve felt wet; Had she been crying?

Noticing a blanket was covering her messily, she sank her head back. A pillow was underneath her head, and…

Guiding her eyes to her side, Natsuki absorbed Shizuru's appearance. The Archmeister had her back facing her, asleep.

Ah… Shizuru.

The lights had been dimmed, simulating night around them. Natsuki's head continued to ache, though the pain had diminished. Her jaw ached less as well; Mottled bruising minimized.

"Shizuru?" How long had she been out? She couldn't even remember falling back asleep. Natsuki stayed still, rubbing along her brow as she felt Shizuru stir.

"...Natsuki?"

Watching the Archmeister awkwardly readjust her position, Natsuki cringed. Shizuru rolled her shoulder slowly, the liquid pockets snapping in response. Looking over her shoulder, Shizuru blinked away and slept slowly. "Are you alright, Natsuki…?"

"Sorry for waking you." Natsuki was determined to avoid the question, but sighed. "I had a… dream. Or rather, a memory… about Mai." Discussing it was awkward enough, the details not even said yet.

The younger woman tried to sit up, her head beginning to throb halfway there. Laying back, she sighed and cupped her brow again.

Was Mai out of the surgery? Would she be on life support? If she was to die, would Schwartz…

Shizuru had barely turned around when Natsuki abruptly pressed up to her. Opening her mouth, but quickly closing it, she changed her mind upon speaking. Ever so hesitantly instead, she carefully wrapped her arms around the Gakuenchou. She simply said nothing, and held Natsuki delicately.

She had her suspicions for what it was. Shizuru closed her eyes, and propped her chin to Natsuki's head. Natsuki didn't react to her whatsoever, which puzzled her. "Natsuki?" She bent down, whispering into her ear.

"I'm sorry." Natsuki muffled a reply into her throat, drying tears upon her cheeks. Shizuru felt the wetness, and frowned more. Holding onto the younger, the Archmeister began to rub down her back.

After a moment, Natsuki spoke again. "Shizuru… I'm scared." Her voice was husky with sleep, the crying no doubt having added to that.

"Natsuki…" Shizuru's heart sank, and she quietly murmured soft nothings into the Meister's ear. She never settled her hand against Natsuki's back, only continuing to rub it soothingly. "Tell me?"

"I don't know if Mai will be alright, or… if we will." The younger woman murmured again, sniffling once. Anger started bubbling in her chest, her fingers curling into Shizuru's clothing. "Schwartz will never be heard from again if Mai dies."

Faintly, Shizuru smiled. Moving her hand from Natsuki's back, to instead clutch at her hand, she breathed. "And what would she say if she caught you becoming vengeful?" Shizuru inquired. Unclenching Natsuki's hand from her clothing tenderly, she tilted the Gakuenchou's chin with a lone finger. "She would not like it. Neither would I." With her rough fingertips, she gently wiped the tears away from Natsuki's face.

The only reason why they were still here was precautionary. There had been no detection of any Schwartz members; but this was something Shizuru knew Natsuki didn't want to believe.

Grumbling, Natsuki finally relented and sighed. "You're right… though it would be hard to keep that in mind once it happens." The younger woman reasoned, letting her face be cradled by Shizuru. "If anything ever happened to you… The Harmonium couldn't match the destruction I would deal with."

Shizuru stared at her, a little perturbed by the thought before she started to snicker. "H-hey, why are you- It's not funny!" Natsuki hissed to her, pulling away from the elder and wiping her face. "Shizuru is mean."

"Surely not?" Biting back a chuckle as Natsuki rolled onto her other side, Shizuru exhaled. "Mai's skin grafts were successful. The skin was taken from her thighs for the largest damage." Pausing, Shizuru carefully studied Natsuki's reaction. "Tonight is her riskiest. Yohko believes however…"

"…There is a good chance she will survive."

Natsuki wiped at her eyes, twisted back around, and stared at Shizuru. "Mai… She might be alright?" The younger woman whispered, stifling another sniffle. She was given a nod, and the Gakuenchou sighed in relief. Now she felt a little… silly…

"I really hope she recovers. But… we might not want to let anyone in the outside world know."

Hopefully they could get away with no one knowing Mai was even injured. Mai was one of their top tier Otome. If anyone knew…

"They will not." Shizuru murmured. Smoothing her fingertips through a lock of Natsuki's dark hair, she caught her eye. "Give her time, Natsuki. She will wake when she is ready."

Shizuru of all people knew how fragile these words were.

"Mm… I will." Natsuki bowed her head, sitting up fully to rub at her eyes. Her head did not ache as much now, but there was still a fuzziness. "Any word on… Mahya?" She asked, though the question was laced with venom.

"Natsuki…" The elder sternly spoke, tutting. "Mahya will be fine, though as I said earlier, Natsuki broke a few of her ribs."

How had she even managed that? Maybe she should ask the… Founder about it? Natsuki's expression twisted upon the thought of artificial intelligence. "Shizuru… given the Founder's name… she was a HiME, right?"

Himeno Fumi.

Fumi of the Hime.

"Yes." Shizuru spoke, sitting closer to rub at Natsuki's back. What was she thinking of, now? "She… Perhaps Natsuki should ask her herself?"

Natsuki gave a flinch to that, unsure if that would be a good idea at all. "She shut me down, she may be angry at me." The Gakuenchou tugged at her ear, sighing softly.

"The Founder sensed your lack of control. I am sure she would not be angry." Shizuru said. Although to be honest, Shizuru wasn't too sure. The Founder was awfully… odd with Natsuki. But what was Shizuru supposed to say? Natsuki was in a big enough state as it was already. Intensifying those feelings would be…

Horrible.

"Maybe I should go speak with her. She certainly would know more about HiME than I do." Natsuki reasoned, looking to find the time. "When my head feels less like exploding, perhaps." She finished, pinching the bridge of her nose to wake up further. "What time is it, anyway?"

"I am unsure." The Archmeister mused.

Ah, that'd be a good idea, Natsuki realised. "... Intercoms should have clocks." Skimming her fingertips against her GEM, she froze. "Shizuru. What if—"

"—Natsuki." Shuffling closer to the Gakuenchou, Shizuru silenced her with a mere fingertip to the lips. "You're panicking. Calm down."

Silenced, the younger woman closed her eyes and nodded. "Alright… My GEM is shut down, I can't access it now anyway." Natsuki realised, huffing softly as she took Shizuru's hand from her mouth.

"Are you sure they'd even be up…?"

"In case they aren't, shut up."

Rosalie… Laura…?

"You should not be so rude to me!" Rosalie hissed quietly, sounding muffled however. Natsuki could picture Laura's hand over the blonde's mouth, and snickered.

"Yes, yes, you're a very pretty Princess and I should worship you. Anything I left out?" Laura dryly responded, though let go of Rosalie. "Oi… Kruger, you up?"

Sitting herself up beside Shizuru, Natsuki cocked her brow at the Archmeister. "...I am." She never looked at the incoming pair, simply watching Shizuru oddly.

Shizuru mirrored Natsuki's expression, wondering what was on her mind. "They are together often." She tried to insinuate.

"Aa… but… together-together?"

The two Columns focused their attention upon Rosalie, and Laura, the two climbing the stairs. As the two women locked gazes with Shizuru, and Natsuki, they blinked in surprise.

"Oh, hey. They are both up." Rosalie instantly strode over to them, and plopped herself down in front of them. "Laura." She hissed over. The elder woman hadn't followed her, simply stared at her stoically.

"Uh, right." The Romulus Lutecian cleared her throat, climbing the remaining stairs. "Forgive little Rosalie, she might not have known if you were discussing something." She teased, sitting beside the blonde either way.

Natsuki chuckled softly, lifting a hand to her mottled jaw. The bruise must be so dark, it was so tender… She noticed Laura stealing glances at her, and furrowed her brows. "What, what is it?"

"Most of the students can't sleep. They've also been asking about you and Shizuru."

Natsuki felt this wasn't the entire truth. But then again, she sensed something was off with Laura.

But who wouldn't behave strangely having to carry your dying friend? Wincing, Natsuki slid her fingertips against her temples, attempting to soothe her mind in any way possible.

"Should we go over there?" Natsuki asked, looking over to Shizuru. The elder seemed lost in thought, directing the Gakuenchou's gaze elsewhere. Rosalie seemed to be fine with this, rather, hiding it well. She was like Shizuru in that aspect; A facade in place.

Laura was much more like herself; Emotions lay bare in her expression. The older woman was drumming her fingers along Rosalie's thigh, not seeming to notice.

Peering down to the movement, Rosalie stared at the fingers. "You're doing it again." She muttered, tearing Laura's attention back to her.

"W-what?" The darker woman eyed her, realizing. "Oh, sorry." She didn't remove her hand however, just stilling her fingertips. Natsuki eyed between them, connecting it slowly.

"Oh. Are you two together?" Natsuki watched as the stoic expression on Laura's face dropped slightly. In place of that, the Lutecian's face softened, and she glanced towards the blonde.

"Sort of…" Laura muttered.

"What do you mean 'sort of'?!" Rosalie snapped. Flinging her own eyes to Laura, she narrowed them. "You agreed to it!"

"You wanted to do it." Laura hissed through her teeth, barely heard.

Blinking at the pair, Natsuki slowly brought her focus upon Shizuru. As Natsuki had assumed, Shizuru was characteristically laughing at the two. Her hand covered her mouth lightly, muffling the mirth she displayed.

"You wanted to, too!" Rosalie hissed, wringing an arm around Laura's neck to bring her close. Natsuki opened her mouth to stop her, before she noticed the blonde merely nuzzling. "Mean Laura."

This was almost sickeningly cute… or just sickening. Natsuki chewed her lip, shaking her head and focusing on Shizuru. The elder tried to sober up, brushing tears from her eyes from laughing.

Even within such an event, such exchanges could still be found. Natsuki was… grateful for it.

"So what was the reason you came here?" Natsuki inquired. Sitting up straighter, she tried to ignore her splitting headache. "Surely not because you couldn't sleep?" Running a hand through her hair mindlessly, Natsuki paused.

Her hair clip was still in her hair. She was pretty sure her hair was messy right now. Natsuki must look quite ridiculous at the moment. But she didn't really care, honestly.

Gently taking the clip from coal, Natsuki held it in her palm. Mindlessly tracing over it, she returned her gaze to the other two. Laura escaped from the blonde's lock, planting a kiss to her cheek before.

"I wanted to talk to you, Natsuki." The older woman spoke, running her fingers over the thigh of her own slacks. She seemed anxious; Something the Gakuenchou could identify with as well.

"What about?" Stupid question. Natsuki winced at it, leaning into Shizuru's side.

"Since Mai isn't… Well, Ribbon hasn't got anyone to care for her." Allowing Natsuki to absorb this information, Laura continued. "The Meister has been taking it in turn to look after her, but I feel she is getting tired of being swapped around."

Nodding slowly, Natsuki nibbled her bottom lip briefly. "No one has told her about Mai, right?" Laura shook her head, hurriedly denying.

"No, the most she knows is that… Mai is sick." The older woman sighed, running a hand through short hair. "I thought I should ask you, if it is alright if Rosalie and I volunteer to take care of her."

Why were they asking her…? It wasn't as if Natsuki were the godmother, or something. Maybe it was just out of respect. "Of course, Laura. I think that would be best, though make sure Rosalie doesn't steal her away and put her in a desk drawer."

"Why would I put her in a drawer?!"

"Seeing as you always steal paperwork…" This response from Laura was quickly countered with a death glare, and then a pout. "...Still I wouldn't be surprised if you used that ridiculously big bag of yours…" Spoken with a straight face, Laura stared at the blonde.

"It's a designer bag, and I would never put a child in it!"

"But a dog?"

Quietly, the Archmeister chuckled. Brushing her knuckles to her lips, she leant closer to Natsuki. "I think we should leave them to their own devices here." She whispered silently. Capturing Natsuki's little finger, she gently tugged at her. "Come… we should let Natsuki's headache go."

"You're unbelievable!" Rosalie huffed at Laura.

What was Shizuru up to, Natsuki wondered? There was something in her eye which made her suspect. What could it possibly be? Reacting to Shizuru's hold, Natsuki moved her hand further into Shizuru's hold. Was Shizuru wanting to sneak away somewhere? Be somewhere private?

"A-ah, take good care of Ribbon." Natsuki spoke out as Shizuru led her away. "Where are you even taking me?" The younger woman questioned, though had an idea. Quietly, the Archmeister led her into the washroom and switched the lights on.

Blinking at the harsh intrusion, Natsuki covered her eyes. "I am sorry, Natsuki, but I need the light to check her head." She heard Shizuru murmur, the elder leading her to bend against the counter. Rough hands swept through dark hair parting it.

What was she- Oh. The seam at her skull, that's right… Shizuru may not have wanted to check it before she was awake. Her head pounded still, and she sighed. "After, could you find me something for this migraine?"

"A-and there's something else I want you to check, Shizuru." She added, feeling Shizuru pause. "Lately I've been getting this weird burning on my left side."

"Yes." Shizuru uttered, restarting her checking. "I saw you having trouble with it earlier, so I checked. I hope you don't mind."

The way Shizuru had said it… it sounded strange to Natsuki. Frowning, she caught Shizuru's wrist, then twisted around. Upon doing so, she then captured the elder's other. "... What is it?" Searching ruby irises, Natsuki leaned the small of her back against the counter. "Shizuru?"

"It is… a mark. A birthmark." Shizuru bluntly spoke, watching as the younger woman's expression furrowed. Natsuki's grip on her wrists lessened, and she darted her gaze down to her hip.

"I don't have a birthmark." Releasing the elder's wrists, she reached for her untucked button-down. Stopped by a hand on hers, Natsuki met Shizuru's gaze once more. "...Shizuru, I want to see it."

She wasn't sure if this was the best thing, but… Shizuru let go, giving a nod to allow Natsuki to continue. The younger woman gingerly eased the left half of her shirt up, shifting her slacks a bit. Her thumb brushed over the mark before she saw it, and Natsuki jumped.

Emerald traced over the mark. Crimson in colour with arched lines, it looked like a shooting star flying through a square. It was like a tiny tattoo inked onto skin like a joke. A symbolism which was supposed to mean so much, yet was misunderstood. Natsuki…

She… She didn't like it.

The Black Valley.

Mikoto had felt the disturbance. She hated it, she had sensed that something horrifying had happened. What was going on? What has happened to Mai?

Hopping up onto the overhang of a gigantic crater, she peered across its landscape. Crouched, with her hands against the sandy rock, her eyes pinpointed her shadow descending the crater. It was morning. She could make it.

Standing to her full height, she carefully listened out. Her feline ears detected nothing, merely the tickle of the desert air. "Mai…" She murmured.

"Miroku!"

Immediately, obelisks began to emerge from the ground around her. Spewing earth around their base, a creature began to rise up. Mikoto didn't move, rising instead of the creature as well.

Alabaster rope was tightly coiled around it, knotted almost in a bow upon its back. Mikoto grasped onto the knot as Miroku rose, the golden eye below her spearing its sight across the way.

As red as an oni, as humongous as a skyscraper, this was her CHILD, and element.

"Miroku… we are going to save Mai."

No matter who got in their way, they would cut them down.
