Renascence 2010 | Chapter 13: Crimson Vestige

Unconsciously, Natsuki stood, and her thigh screeched in protest. "S-Shizuru?!" She yapped, another rumble blurring in the distance.

If a wall had been standing by their far right, it certainly wouldn't any longer. The two stared dumbfoundedly. Directly above them, was a crimson, and black… SLAVE? It veered its gaze down to them, spikes protruding from it.

"What is… that?" Shizuru asked, mostly to herself.

"As long as it can die, I don't care." Natsuki glared up to it, the pain from her thigh throbbing more. How could she fight if she could barely stand…?

"Mai!" A small voice yelled out, one they hadn't heard before. The creature knelt, almost in a surveying pose. Atop it, a girl stood with one hand leveled to her brow; searching?

"...What?" Natsuki blankly stared up, somehow garnering the girl's attention.

Who was…

That…?

A HiME.

"Hey!" The girl shouted down to them, causing the pair to jump out their skin. The cat within Shizuru's lap made a run for it; bolting. Meanwhile the girl leapt from her companion, and landed upon the wall. Dust and stone crumbled under her feet, but she took no notice. "Do you know Mai?! Is this Cantaloupe?!" She continued in a rushed notion. Crouching down, her elbows were angled atop her thighs.

Brows furrowed tightly, Natsuki just continued to stare. "...What?" At the mention of Mai's name, the Gakuenchou paused. Didn't Mai say something about this… whoever this was? A… catgirl, cat goddess? Something like that, she was sure.

Shizuru stared, more from the medicine than actual shock. "I…" She clutched the arms of her wheelchair, sparing a glance around. Had that SLAVE damaged anything else? "Cantaloupe?" Shizuru continued, more to herself than anyone. Blinking, she glanced at Natsuki, the younger woman doing the same. "Cantaloupe? A melon?"

Garderobe…? Guadeloupe…? Cantaloupe…?

"Melon Academy?" Natsuki hushed to the other, the two of them twitching again.

"Where's Mai?!"

Natsuki stopped herself from pointing just barely. "Are you… Who are you?" The haziness of her medicine was starting to annoy her. She gazed at the SLAVE again, hearing the faint murmur of students around.

"Whoever you are, that… that has to go." Natsuki pointed at the SLAVE in an unsure manner.

"Miroku?" The cat-girl arched a brow down to them, then regarded the monstrous oddity. She nodded firmly to him, and it phased out of existence. With that, a faint glowing of emerald followed. Slowly she turned to the Columns, tilting her head.

"So… you're?" The Gakuenchou pried, trying to ignore the students grouping behind them.

"Mikoto."

"Just Mikoto?"

The cat-girl nodded again.

What was… even happening? Sighing harshly, Natsuki rubbed her forehead. "... What's even happening anymore…"

Shizuru cleared her throat, catching their attention. "Mikoto, was it? Mai was… very injured during Garderobe's breach. She is either asleep, or has since woken up." The Archmeister lifted her hand, delicately pointing in the infirmary's direction.

"R-right… We would escort you, but you seem to be in a hurry." Natsuki pointedly stared at her cane, then to Shizuru's wheelchair.

Mikoto gave them both a slow blink before grinning. "Then Mai's that way?"

Natsuki cleared her throat, nodding to where Shizuru had pointed. The Archmeister now had a finger to her GEM, speaking lowly.

"Miss Maria… a strange girl has arrived at the back of the gardens...—yes, we're here with her. She is insisting to meet with Meister Mai in the infirmary—yes, she appears dangerous. Please have our Otome take caution and watch her. Helene should be informed immediately."

Mikoto had dashed away, gaining a cult following of cats. Natsuki stared off after her, leaning into her cane. "Shizuru… What in the world is going on? I feel… like this shouldn't have happened?"

"I… I do not know." Shizuru murmured quietly, ending her call to Maria. They never noticed the students rushing after Mikoto. Instead, the pair stared at the damaged wall. "Is it the medicine? Surely not. What we have witnessed…"

"No, that was… that was real. So were her ears, so… She really has cat ears?" Natsuki scratched at her head, just as confused as Shizuru. "Should we head over there, or stay away?"

"Perhaps… go?" The Archmeister suggested. She was just… so confused! They were high on their medication, so surely making decisions was out of the question? But this Mikoto was somebody who needed to be watched over. It didn't matter if other Otome were on the case already. But they at least knew the cat-girl's motivation for being here in the first place.

"Mm, we should follow." Natsuki gave Shizuru her cane to keep safe, taking the handles of the wheelchair. "Wait, wasn't that girl the one who… kidnapped Mai? What if she takes her again?!"

"Calm down, Natsuki… I would rather not be tossed from this thing because she was hurrying too fast." Shizuru teased, though made a note of the possibility. What if it was indeed true that this girl intended to kidnap Mai?

Touching her fingertips to her GEM once more, Shizuru murmured softly to her. "The staff know what to do in this situation. We did not have such drills for no reason. Especially not after Yumemiya's amusing arrival." She piped, connecting into Miss Maria's intercom again. "We are heading to the infirmary, Miss Maria. We should warn that this Mikoto girl has an unsummoned SLAVE."

Natsuki calmed down, at least enough to stride slowly. Her thigh pulsed with faint pain, but it was ignored. So much was happening, and now this? She sighed, catching Shizuru's attention. The elder raised a hand, petting down along Natsuki's arm.

"I'm just ready to sleep again." Natsuki muttered, pausing the two of them. She clasped a hand atop Shizuru's for a moment. "Still up for that holiday, Shizuru?"

Clutching hold of the Gakuenchou's cane, Shizuru smiled, leaning back. "Only too ready." Shizuru chuckled, sliding her thumb over the younger woman's knuckles. "But, until that holiday comes, we're obligated to deal with this."

"Damned obligations…"

But with such conditions in place, who was to say more wouldn't follow? For the past few months since Natsuki's awakening, this precise thing had happened. They still didn't know who had attacked them, nor was Schwartz making their move. Was Schwartz and their almost-assassins the same people? There were so many questions which were unanswered.

"The girl has arrived." Miss Maria's voice flooded into their intercoms, making them jump.

"Is she… behaving?" Shizuru asked, pausing as she waited for Natsuki to open the door. Propped open by the Gakuenchou's shoulder, the elder was wheeled in carefully.

"Controllable, but questionable." The epitome sounded irritated. Such a notion wasn't surprising, but Mikoto was a newcomer. A situation which Maria felt she didn't have any control was a worst case scenario. They would need to make sure this wouldn't happen.

"What I don't understand is how she got down there so quickly." Natsuki muttered, leading them towards the elevator.

"Natsuki, it did seem she was riding that SLAVE." Shizuru reminded her, positioning the cane better. The younger woman gave an irritated hum, standing beside her after hitting the button.

"To be honest, I almost thought that was a hallucination… Her riding it, not it itself. What had she called that thing anyway? Miro...ku?" Did such a name have a meaning? Just now, a realisation hit Natsuki. "She seemed… Zipangese."

"The SLAVE… indeed felt Zipangese. But the girl's clothing?" Shizuru mused, sliding a hand at the back of her neck. "Definitely Zipangese too. Though I cannot imagine she is from any civilization."

Mikoto had a… nomad sensation around her? Shizuru wasn't even quite sure, to be honest.

"You don't think she'll hurt Mai, do you?" Natsuki asked softly, the medicine making her groggy. "She kidnapped her the first time…"

"Is Natsuki remembering when Mai disappeared?" Shizuru was having a hard time recalling the finer details. Had the two younger women been together at the time? She had always assumed so. Perhaps later when this died down, she could ask? "There will be several Otome stationed in the infirmary. I doubt she would get past them even if she tried."

"Mm, you're right…" Then again, weren't most of them injured or otherwise preoccupied? Mahya was still recovering—Ah, damn… Now that Natsuki remembered, she had to apologize. "Wait… did I bite Laura or am I imagining that? It seems like something I would do…"

Shizuru chuckled lowly, though was unsure herself. "If Natsuki thinks she did, she probably did."

"What am I… a dog or the head of Otome?" Natsuki muttered under her breath. Shaking her head, she felt her weight drop as the lift lowered. For a few moments this continued, until the elevator came to a stop.

"That… almost made me vomit." Natsuki admitted, easing Shizuru from the lift. The Archmeister looked in the same condition, lips pursed faintly. Perhaps this wasn't the best idea; Confronting a cat-goddess while high on their medication…

But what else were they supposed to do? Whether this Mikoto was dangerous or not, they weren't letting her out of their sight.

"So you're… from the Black Valley…? From… the Cat God… Mountain?" Yohko was heard throughout the laboratory. Her voice echoed within the metallic area, and they caught sight of her. She was slouched in her seat with an elbow grounding to her armrest.

Dumbfoundedly, the scientist stared at Mikoto. What was this girl even on about? Her hand supported her jaw, regarding her oddly. "You're after our Zipang Meister, Tokiha Mai…? Who was your close friend…?"

"Uhm!" The cat-girl nodded firmly. Crouched atop the desk Yohko was sitting.

Shizuru was starting to feel worse, raising a hand to hold Natsuki's again. The Gakuenchou blinked at the scene, wanting nothing more than to turn around. Yukariko had a tissue pressed against her nose, backing away from Mikoto.

What in the hell was happening?

Was their teacher… allergic to this girl?

"And you're the… Cat Goddess of that region?" Yohko continued to question, getting a nod in response. "Along with being a… HiME?" With yet another nod, the woman groaned, covering her face with her palm.

"Are you alright?" Mikoto inquired, her head sharply turning to the two Columns. Her cat reflexes were noted by the Otome within the room cautiously. Just who was this girl?

"A HiME?" Laura frowned from beside Yukariko, urging Shizuru and Natsuki closer.

"Are we supposed to be whispering?" Natsuki asked, eyeing them all a little strangely.

Yohko cocked a brow, chuckling dryly to herself. "Fantastic, the Gakuenchou and Archmeister are still high." She snickered, shaking her head.

Natsuki gave her a look but shrugged, taking her cane back from Shizuru to lean on it. "You're not wrong… We feel a little sick, too." Natsuki admitted, fighting the urge to lean against Shizuru.

"Well stop it!" Mikoto huffed, her voice flooding the facility. It caused the two Column Otome to groan silently, and Yukariko sneezed. The group took to watching the teacher, the woman hectically spluttering into a handkerchief.

"D-don't mind me t—" Sneezing again, Yukariko loudly moaned.

Yohko nudged over a packet of caplets, giving the woman an odd look.

Natsuki leaned into the counter, stumbling before she righted herself. "Is Mai awake yet?" She asked, her temple leaned into the wall.

This seemed to perk the cat-girl up, Mikoto hopping from the table. Strangely enough not a paper was disturbed. Much to Yohko's relief, but her gaze still hawked after her suspiciously.

Having leaned in her chair to hand over the tablets, Yohko straightened out again. This only took a moment until she stood, regarding the women carefully. Yukariko, Natsuki and Shizuru were the most vocal. But other Meister were with them currently.

Miss Maria, Nao, Laura, Rosalie, Mahya and Sarah had taken to staying by the railings. They were absorbing the situation much alike to herself. With confusion and discomfort.

"She is exhausted from her medication and recent surgery." She warned, heading towards Mikoto. The odd girl barely came up to her chest. She was barely five feet, if anything.

Peering down to her, Yohko's frown deepened, Mikoto merely tilting her head. "I will bring you Mai. But we are to be present, and it will be here you meet her."

"Mai!" Mikoto nodded in understanding, hands adjusting her robes.

Natsuki leaned into a wall, wanting nothing more than to sit somewhere. What she wouldn't give to be asleep right now… But, it was probably best that she was alert. "What are you still doing here?" She grumbled up to Nao, the redhead cocking her a smirk.

"Visiting." Leaving it vague to annoy the elder, Nao ignored her.

"Visiting who?"

"The King of Annam, obviously." The fiery redhead rolled her eyes, grinning up to the elder. "Oh, she's glaring. How scary. Now she's marching towards me all Altain style—ah, Mahya? Help?"

Quickly manoeuvring away from the Gakuenchou, Nao snickered. She strode towards the eldest Column, Mahya's gaze veering sharply from Natsuki. Standing behind her, the Altain's eyes narrowed before ducking. "You've got to apologise!"

"I already did!"

"No you didn't." Mahya argued, huffing as she crossed her arms. Natsuki paused, teetering on her cane and between the railing. Brows drawn together tight, she eyed the older woman.

"I didn't? I could have sworn… but I wasn't sure. I haven't?"

"...No." The Mauryan native denied, watching Natsuki oddly. That must be some medicine for the Gakuenchou to be so… loopy.

"Well then… I guess I'm… sorry?" The Gakuenchou grumbled, Nao snorting from behind Mahya.

"Gotta try harder, Kruski."

"My name isn't Krus—"

"-Gakuenchou!" Miss Maria bit, finally interrupting them. Latching the redhead, and older Column by the ears, she barked. "Must I truly treat you like children?! Must we include chairs and detention?"

"I am not apologizing to you until I get one first!" Natsuki growled over to Mahya, leaning onto her cane. The elder Meister gave an incredulous look, squaring her stance.

"Apology for what?!"

"For saying all of that… stuff! About how I was weak." The Gakuenchou glared, thankful for once that Maria was holding her back.

"Because then you'd get the motivation to prove me wrong." Mahya pointedly stared at them. Regarding Miss Maria, the epitome released her, and she eased away from the pair. Shaking her head, the Mauryan's mind drifted for a moment. What was wrong with this woman? Of all people, she would've expected Kruger to understand the meaning.

Well, apparently not. Obviously.

"You couldn't have picked a shittier time to say it!" Natsuki wrenched away from Maria, staggering on her injured leg. "I almost killed-!" She stopped herself, all eyes in the room on her. Pursing her lips, she resorted to a scowl tossed Mahya's way and turned back to Shizuru.

Anxiety. Depression. Esteem.

Suicide.

If only people were as aware and sensitive as Shizuru. Retreating back to the Archmeister's side, Natsuki sighed. "Shizuru… why are people such asses?" The question was genuine, and she didn't believe the elder had an answer. She ignored the burning of eyes upon her back, awaiting Shizuru's reply.

The expression lit upon Shizuru's face confused Natsuki. Was this through musing, or of mistrust? Did Shizuru not trust herself to reply? The idea of the thought confused the Gakuenchou further.

"People are… misunderstood. We do not know one another entirely." The elder spoke, finally. She studied Natsuki, then slowly drifted her eyes towards Mahya. The two's eyes locked, and the Archmeister frowned.

Nao seemed rather surprised, then shifted to hide a guilty expression. She clasped a hand to Mahya's shoulder, faintly shaking her head.

"...Mai?" Mikoto asked again, disrupting the current mood. Yohko sighed, grumbling softly as she walked off down towards the wards. With all that was going on, she envied the wounded Princess.

Natsuki's ears felt hot from her almost-confession, but she ignored it. Her free hand laid over Shizuru's shoulder, fingers toying with tawny hair. She hoped the elder woman wasn't angry with her…

Surely not? The idea of Shizuru being angry with her—Natsuki had to remind herself to stop. But she simply couldn't stop thinking of the worst case scenario. This, and the medication weren't mixing well either.

"Will you shut up, Wang? It was nothing!"

"You say that now…" Two students skittered around the corner, almost bumping into one of the Columns. Nina jumped back, startled by the sudden appearance of them all. She hid her broken wrist behind her back, hair still down.

Brows furrowed at Nina, Tomoe remained silent. She came to a stop by the younger student's side. What is even happening down here these days? Every time they came here, there was something going on. But they had come here to escape-

"Say what now? It's not my fault you…" She trailed off, watching Maria slink over. Closing her mouth quickly, Tomoe stood her full height. "Miss Maria?" She questioned, glancing at Nina from the corner of her eye.

The Altain… she was blushing.

"What are you both doing down here?" The epitome questioned, hearing scampering footsteps.

"Aha!" Irina came around the corner, disheveled and minorly out of breath. "I caught them—"

"Shut up!" Nina turned on her, flushing brighter. "It wasn't anything!"

That sure didn't seem to be the case. Irina arched a brow, turned to Maria, and opened her mouth. About to say something, her mouth closed almost immediately. Tomoe was outright glaring at her. She exchanged a pointed stare, lips twitching upwards.

She was sure she had seen something happen between these two. Whether Tomoe appeared stoic or not, there was something. Oh, and Irina would find out what that little detail was.

"Is there something you wish to share…?" Maria interrupted the group, eyes narrowing upon them freezing.

"No!" Nina quickly denied, cradled her wrist more. She seemed the most embarrassed, and the most easy to crack. Maria stared at her, and merely that almost caused the girl to spill.

"No, miss Maria." Tomoe adamantly spoke, expression relaxing. Behind her back, she swiped a tablet of pills. "Just had to escort Wang for her medicine." Thankfully, they were in pain.

Without another chance to reply, Maria almost jumped. Mikoto had shouted, Yohko had replied with annoyance, and a shuffling sounded. The large group turned to the commotion.

A confused Mai was led into the room. She leaned against the doorway slightly, staring at Mikoto dumbfoundedly.

Taking this moment to disappear, Tomoe grasped Nina's wrist and led her out. It was far too crowded there…

Natsuki eased forward for Mai, only stopped by Shizuru's hand on her arm. Giving a frown to her lover, the Gakuenchou nodded reluctantly. Mai was no doubt overwhelmed by Mikoto's sudden appearance.

From their distance, Mai appeared more shocked than anything. The doctor had ushered her inside the lab, leading her towards a chair. This chair was the one Yohko usually sat in.

The idea of the elder offering such a thing. For some reason, it amused Natsuki.

She leaned against the wall further, distracting herself with Shizuru. "Do you need anything?" Natsuki asked gently, brushing the cat hair from the elder's lap. She idly wondered if Shizuru missed the thing, or had just been teasing her about the identical remarks.

When it came to Shizuru, she had no idea.

"You already know that answer." The Archmeister murmured, capturing the younger woman's hand. She gladly added weight into the Gakuenchou's palm, massaging the skin. "I feel like an old woman complaining about my hip." She chuckled almost humorlessly.

"Now you know how I feel… and felt." Natsuki leaned further against her, softly kissing Shizuru's head. Her cane was given over again, and the Gakuenchou paused. If Mai was awake, and Mahya and Nao were still here, then-

"Natsuki!"

Damn.

The Zipang redhead; though baffled upon Mikoto, almost glared at Natsuki. Carefully she veered over towards them, and Natsuki frowned.

"What?" She gruffly muttered, glancing between Nao and Mahya suspiciously. One of them had told her, hadn't they?

"You broke Mahya's ribs, and didn't apologize?!" Mai hissed, taking the Gakuenchou's earlobe. Natsuki winced, wanting to escape but not wanting to wear out the younger woman.

"S-she started it!" Natsuki grumbled, though got a pinch for her efforts.

"It does not matter! You are the bigger Otome here!"

"Bigger?" Mikoto tilted her head. Sizing up the Mauryan and Aries women, the girl pondered. The two weren't that much different in size though? Becoming bored with the thought, she sat down then and there. Uncaring of the odd look Yohko gave her, she crossed her legs.

"Not literally, Mikoto…" Mai advised, glaring at Natsuki. She let go of the elder's earlobe, sighing as she briefly leaned into her. "You've got to stop being so angry with everything." She murmured, as if she had told her this plenty of times.

She most certainly had.

Natsuki glared but worked to relax her features, gazing over Mai's head for the others. "Mmph. I'll… apologize later."

"Though." Shizuru started, catching the two's attention. "She has certainly improved recently." Confirming this, she softly smiled. The notion tempted Mai to calm somewhat, though she wasn't falling for it entirely.

"Even so." Mai insisted, Yohko guiding her back to the chair. Or at least attempted to; but again, Mai had nothing of it. "Tell us when something is up. Don't just hide away all the time. How many times did I remind you of this?"

"...Alright, then. Let's see… Apparently there is HiME and I'm one, so are you… Shizuru too, since we found her mark in privacy—Er, n-not what you think." Natsuki faltered, shaking her head. "And I apparently went berserk on a SLAVE when people tried to kill us earlier."

"What?" Mai seemed confused, glancing at the doctor. "HiME? You are su—"

"-Where's the cat-girl I've been hearing about?! The students said she has a magical melon that summons cats!"

"We're sure." Natsuki murmured before the door above was slammed open. She covered her face, not in the mood nor mindset to face her mother. "I think the medicine is really… starting to kick in."

"Where is she?!" Saeko sounded from above them on the stairs. She grasped hold of the railings, her gaze locking on her target. "There!" She pointed in exclamation, dragging Miyu down the stairs.

The gynoid was as stoic as ever, utterly blank as she was ushered.

"Mother…" Natsuki groaned, at least grateful that the elder's attention wasn't on her. This place was quickly becoming crowded. It seemed Mai had Mikoto under control, though exactly what the latter was she didn't know.

"I think Shizuru and I have had enough fresh air, we need to rest."

Anything to escape this place. Anything.

"Mai—" Sarah at last revealed herself. She paused, glancing down at Saeko and Mikoto. The spiky girl stared at her suspiciously, and she frowned. ...Why? She regarded the desert wanderer oddly, becoming more confused.

Natsuki gave Shizuru her cane, grasping the handles of the wheelchair. "Far too much for one day." She muttered, guiding the elder towards the wards. They still needed rest, after all.

Would leaving be fine though? Could Mikoto be dangerous? Though they had plenty of security around her, so-

"-Such excuses." The Archmeister bit playfully, though took it to their advantage. To say the least she was exhausted, and she was sure Natsuki was also. With the noise of the lab silenced once entering the wards, relief flooded them. Shizuru was sure they would both sleep well tonight.

Suddenly, a thought came to mind as Natsuki opened the door, and she spoke. "Do you wonder what this Mikoto wants with Mai, and how they know each other?"

"Mai told me that Mikoto was the one that… took her. Now that Mai is back, perhaps Mikoto wants to take her again. Or does she want to help? I'm… clueless, dear." Natsuki sounded weary, but smiled as she parked the wheelchair by Shizuru's bed.

"Here…" The younger woman gathered the Archmeister into her arms, lowering her under the sheets.

"Hm… you're sure your leg is alright to do that?" Shizuru questioned, her arms remaining around Natsuki's shoulders. She pried the younger Otome closer to her, fingers mindlessly brushing through hair. Skimming her digits through strands, they met with the Gakuenchou's scar. "Tomorrow let us work things out."

"Mm." Natsuki winced just barely, lying Shizuru into the bed. "Just rest… Hopefully we'll feel better, hm?" She leaned down, pressing her lips to the elder's gently.

"Such a pain." Murmuring softly against Natsuki's lips, Shizuru lured her in closer, minding her thigh. With the Gakuenchou's knee resting beside her uninjured hip, she muttered. "Come, Natsuki. Do not be boring now." She jabbed, uncaring of their clothes.

"Ah, I have to take off my shoes…" Her protest was weak and utterly smashed when Shizuru tugged her again. "Alright, alright…" Gingerly, careful of both their wounds, Natsuki came to lie against Shizuru. She shifted, toeing off her shoes before resting her chin atop the elder's shoulder. "So insistent."

"So obeying."

"I am not obeying, Shizuru."

"Oh, I think so." Shizuru smiled widely, nudging her nose into Natsuki's hair. She loosely wrapped her arms around the Gakuenchou's hips. "...Stop denying it. We both know the truth."

"Hmph… I only obey you." Natsuki firmly murmured, curling a hand to cup the nape of Shizuru's neck. She brushed away the hair draped there, stroking along warm flesh. Even with the scent of the stinging clean, the elder still smelled so good.

"Liar." Straying, her hands lazily smoothed along the small of Natsuki's back, Shizuru grinned. Natsuki stiffened from the gesture, and threw a glare her way. "Oh?" She urged, fingertips sneaking past fabric.

"Shizuru!" She flushed, batting the hands away. Or at least attempting to.

"Hm?" The elder teased her more, but Natsuki grasped her wrists.

"W-we can't… Not here!" The younger woman hissed softly, flushing darkly. Shizuru gazed with adoration, finding the assumption utterly darling.

"Why ever not?" Shizuru pouted, fingertips drumming along bare flesh.

"What if… Yohko has cameras here?" Natsuki picked her head up, glancing around.

"Hm… but no one would come in to bother us. They think we're resting." Shizuru teased more, watching a flash of consideration pass in emerald. Oh, really now?

"And yet I had only teased. Natsuki truly is a pervert." Shizuru jabbed further, digging the padding of her fingertips into smooth flesh. "Would you think it is sensible? We are rather… stuck with mobility."

"Don't say it like that." Natsuki's skin felt like fire, and she was certain it looked like it. "We're… supposed to be resting." She continued to protest, but was silenced when Shizuru's nails drug along her sides.

"Mm?" The elder bit into her own lower lip, grinning softly. She simply adored watching Natsuki's reactions to everything. It was simply a sight, and I was truly thankful only she experienced it.

"Hm, what?" Natsuki peered away sharply, arching her head towards the door. She was almost suspicious of it, expecting it to fly off its hinges. "I-I'm not sure about this, what if—"

"I was only teasing."

"...Oh." Natsuki's cheeks only seemed to darken, lowering her head back to the pillow. She fidgeted; Shizuru's still moving hands were the culprit. Damn it, now she wanted to…

The elder watched happily, feeling fatigue wash over her once more. "Let us sleep, Natsuki, hm? Perhaps later, I will indulge her?"

"M-more like me indulging you!"

"All of this because I touched her b—"

"-I don't know why, but that word really annoys me."

"What, bu—"

"Shizuru! Just..." Groaning, the Gakuenchou covered the elder's eyes. "Sleep, woman! Sleep!"

Shizuru chuckled softly, giving in this bout. She wrapped her arms around the younger woman, guiding Natsuki's head down to rest. "Yes, my love…" Closing her eyes, a mixture of weariness and the medicine led her into sleep.

Natsuki sighed, nuzzling in against Shizuru. With the Archmeister's nanomachines down from the wound, she wondered if it would heal safely. Hopefully, Yohko will find a solution. Soon, the Gakuenchou drifted off to sleep, clinging to her lover.

At this point, Natsuki wondered why she always woke in the middle of the night. It has become more than a habit now. If anything, it was a daily routine within her life.

With her nose pressed against Shizuru's throat, she grumbled. Both of her arms were on either side of Shizuru's head. The elder's natural scent swarmed her, along with her heat.

It was a sensation she would never get used to, nor fall out of love with.

She truly loved Shizuru so much… Feeling needy, Natsuki laid her ear to the elder's chest. Her heartbeat was steady; Strong and healthy. Closing her eyes to listen, Natsuki held gently onto soft hair.

Her eyes felt so heavy and dry. She was sure that at that moment, she would fall asleep. With Shizuru's heartbeat added, how long would this take? She was sure that in a moment, she could.

With her body lifted, Natsuki hummed. The elder woman had sighed deeply within her own sleep.

In moments like these, everything about Shizuru seemed utterly darling. Natsuki stroked along tawny hair, curling impossibly closer to the elder. Her thigh didn't hurt as much, though she hadn't shifted her legs.

Briefly, she wondered if Shizuru was like this when the tables were turned; Was Shizuru as clingy and needy when she was awake and Natsuki asleep?

She hoped so. In a way, she also knew the elder did. But how? Maybe her unconscious mind somehow knew? Either way, she was going to ask Shizuru next time she remembered.

Wondering what time it was, she turned her head slightly. Within the darkness, the clock was utterly cloaked. Frowning, she exhaled once more. Either way, she wasn't moving.

It must still be late at night, they did retire early after all. Returning to her earlier position, the Gakuenchou let herself be lulled back to sleep by her lover's heartbeat. It was so soothing, and unable to help herself, her mind strayed.

Natsuki thought back to a time less stressful. To a time the two of them were only friends when students. It was a… strange experience to have known Shizuru only as a friend. She couldn't imagine her as anything but a lover.

. . .

. .

.

"Natsuki! It's not fair. Senior-Haruka is so hard to make happy." Mai was complaining to her, seeming to think she had it easier.

The older student huffed, a hanger in her hand and a bag draped over her shoulder. "Shizuru likes her uniforms dry-cleaned. Such a pain."

"Least you don't have to iron out the… frilly… shoulders." Mai frowned, unable to find the precise wording. "Why is western clothing so complicated?"

"Complicated, are you nuts? You haven't forgotten it takes you people an hour to get into your clothes?"

"Traditional, not casual, and besides, I could take the same for these ridiculous outfits."

"We're wearing uniforms! Big difference!"

"Not really." Mai huffed, carefully hanging the blonde's uniform over her chair. "Besides, aren't you forgetting something, Natsuki?" She arched her brow, glancing over her shoulder to her. Gesturing to the clock, the Ariesian paled. "Somebody is laaaate." A lie.

"A-ah, damn you, Mai!" Natsuki adjusted the bag carefully, tossing a glare before she hurried off. If she was late, she would make Shizuru late… "Fuck." She softly cursed to herself, free hand in her pocket for the keys.

"Remember to greet her first." Mai snickered just as the student closed the door. The statement was ignored, and her lips curled further.

Zipping past idle students, the Coral ventured up the stairs to the Pearl dorms. These rooms were slightly bigger than their own. This was due to there being only half of them compared to the Corals.

It had always made Natsuki wonder; where did the failed students go? What became of them? Surely they went into different branches of the military? She couldn't begin to imagine what it'd be like. Nor was she about to find out.

Within only a moment, she found Shizuru's door.

Fiddling with the keys, Natsuki was startled when the door opened. "S-Shizuru—" She cut herself off, backing away from the door. The elder student stood there, and blinked at her. Their height difference didn't consist of much, but Natsuki was level with the Pearl's eyes.

With hair disheveled, she stared at Natsuki blankly for a moment or two. Nightwear covered by a simple dressing gown, she moved aside. "Did you get distracted again, Natsuki?" She grinned, though exhaustion was clearly etched into her.

"...I did. Sorry, Mai was complaining." Natsuki flushed, edging into the room past Shizuru. She turned once inside, unsure of herself before offering the bag over.

The older woman cocked a brow, still looking mildly amused. "I see…" She took the bag, setting it away without another thought.

Confused as to why Shizuru wasn't bustling about to be ready, Natsuki stepped forward. "A-are you sick?"

"Sick, me? Oh, no. Haruka was just giving me a rough time during practice." The elder remarked, shaking her head in amusement. "She insisted on fighting me, but the more she lost, the angrier she became."

"I can picture that… You don't seem to be eager for class." Natsuki spoke, furrowing her brows as Shizuru softly laughed.

"Does Natsuki not know what day it is?" The older woman covered her mouth, tilting her head. The Coral seemed utterly confused, trying to count back the days.

"It's… Friday?" Natsuki frowned, counting from thumb to finger. She stared at Shizuru, the taller student laughing softly, and sitting on her bed. She patted the blanket beside her, tempting Natsuki to sit. Instead Natsuki remained standing, awkwardly peering over to her by the door. "I'm sure it was…?"

"Saturday." Shizuru clarified, watching Natsuki with a faint fondness. She shook her head, chuckling one more time. "I am glad I will have a number of pressed uniforms ready after the weekend." She teased, tilting her head.

This girl. There was just something about her that Shizuru couldn't understand. But she felt a connection which was natural. Yet at the same time, this sensation was so close, yet so far. It was hopeless to imagine, yet here she was doing just that.

"Oh." Natsuki dumbly stared at the smooth floorboards. Sliding the heel of her shoe against them, she picked her head up. "What was Haruka on with this time? She couldn't still be holding that grudge from last week?"

Turning her face to hide that she had been admiring Natsuki, the elder grinned. "Haruka is always content to contend with me. I am afraid I will not have much company today, Natsuki."

"A-ah, of course. You need to rest." The Coral cleared her throat, rubbing at the back of her head. "Sorry for interrupting your day, then. If you need me…"

"I will call for you." Shizuru promised, standing to see the younger woman out.

"Mai tricked me again…" Natsuki grumbled under her breath, though the elder certainly heard it. Hearing Shizuru laugh softly once more, she glanced over her shoulder. "You… stop laughing."

"What can I say? Natsuki is somewhat gullible." The brunette grinned, pensively drifting her hands to Natsuki's shoulders. The notion had the Coral stiffen, though her hands only remained for a moment. She straightened out the ridiculous frills of the shoulders, and eased back. "Try not to get in trouble with Miss Maria again?"

"She is out to get me." Natsuki grumbled, opening the door. Pausing, she glanced back at Shizuru. "Rest up, okay? We won't hear the end of it if Haruka actually wins."

Delightfully amused, Shizuru chuckled softly and nodded. "I will keep that in mind… enjoy the day, Natsuki."

. .

. . .

Why she had remembered such a memory, Natsuki had no idea. But she was content to have even acknowledged it. It was such a simplistic memory, yet oddly enough she adored it. It had been back in a time when things had been so… relaxed.

Whether or not she had taken medication even back then, it was still… soothing.

The elder grumbled within her sleep, shifting underneath Natsuki. The movement disturbed the younger woman, but she remained atop the elder.

What time was it? It was too dark to search out a clock, even if she had the mind to open her eyes first. Natsuki grumbled back to Shizuru softly, an upwards twitch of her lips to the replying snuggle. The older woman stayed asleep, content to lie against Natsuki.

Was Shizuru dreaming? Whenever it occurred, Shizuru always did seem to shuffle within her sleep. There were always the most subtle of hints to broadcast this; the faint twitch of the eyebrow, to the jolt of the fingers.

Yet even so, these were also hints for a nightmare. Which was it tonight?

Opening her eyes groggily, Natsuki surveyed her. Her nose was brushed up against the elder's throat, constricting her sight within the darkness.

Shizuru's warmth did nothing to help this studying. Instead of concentrating upon her, Natsuki found herself zoning off.

As usual in the wards, it was quiet. Natsuki was surprised her mother hadn't barged in yet, or even Mai. Slowly, she pushed herself to sit up and wipe her eyes of sleep. Maybe they should wake up soon?

Between the cat invasion and Mikoto, Natsuki was sure that Garderobe needed its Gakuenchou and Archmeister… Injured as they were even still.

But what time was it? It was no good to get up at such a ridiculous time. But without a clock, it was hopeless. They didn't exactly have a window to spy the time of day.

Pushing the sheets from herself, Natsuki carefully swung her legs over the edge of the bed. Her thigh was healing, but it was frustratingly slow-paced. If anything, Natsuki wondered if having no nano-machines would increase the rate.

Shaking her head, a grumble released from her throat. She glanced down to Shizuru, her back facing the elder's torso.

Suddenly, a thought came to mind. When had they last eaten? Biting her lip, the Gakuenchou then mindlessly chewed her inner-cheek. A sigh instead overwhelmed her, and she turned from Shizuru.

Either way they would need to eat soon. Whether or not Natsuki felt hungry.

Brushing fingers through her bedridden hair, Natsuki hesitantly stood.

Regret was immediate, as was the pain. She gripped the counter by the bed, cursing the darkness inwardly. Where had she put her cane…? Ah, Shizuru had had it last, right?

Screwing her brows together, Natsuki recalled the events before bed. Her admitting enough of that incident with Mahya… Ugh. Oh, she had picked up Shizuru to place her in bed… Rather easily, at that. She was getting stronger, wasn't she? Much stronger than before the coma…

But why hadn't her leg protested? That didn't make sense at all. Were her nano-machines beginning to ward pain away? That wasn't possible. It couldn't be possible.

The Otome hadn't been given a tolerance to pain due to their destructive nature. An unfeeling Otome… that would only spell disaster.

Catching herself drifting off into these thoughts, Natsuki's eyes pinpointed her cane. It was propped within Shizuru's wheelchair, on the other side of the bed. Keeping secure hold of the counter for a moment, her mind caused havoc.

Should she risk moving? Then again, what was she even thinking? Frowning, she leant on one leg, and sat herself back down.

Mai was right—again.

She took things far too seriously, and was always so angry. But again, she realised her mistake, and derailed her own train of thought.

Instead, Natsuki regarded Shizuru quietly. A hand lightly clasped to her own thigh, she winced, leaning back. Upon doing so, a free hand swept across the Archmeister's forehead. She peered down Shizuru's form slowly, thinking.

The elder woman was still asleep, and no doubt would remain so for some time. Natsuki was restless, but staying at Shizuru's side seemed her only choice. If only her mother would pop in , but that would be too convenient, wouldn't it?

Dare she believe her mother may pop in the one time she would have welcomed it? Natsuki grumbled under her breath, carefully sinking back into the bed fully.

With an abrupt thought coming to mind, Natsuki's fingers traced her GEM. Without even registering it within her mind first, she found herself on the intercom.

"Please select an Otome ID."

At this time… would she be…? "M.T. Fire Stirring Ruby."

The connection buffered on her side for a moment, and she wondered why. Before she was able to reason, Fumi's voice piped up.

"Establishing a connection. Gakuenchou, you should be sleeping. It is 3:28am."

"I'll sleep after." Natsuki huffed softly, unable to fight the blush on her cheeks. Reprimanded by Fumi? That was almost comical, in the way it was done. "I've already been asleep for hours." She tried to reason, but the connection cemented and she was through.

"Eh… wh—" The disgruntled muttering of Mai's exhaustion drifted into her ears. A few soundless seconds passed, before the redhead spoke again. "Natsuki…? It's, what…? Half three in the morning? Why are you calling me…?"

She didn't have an answer to that. Natsuki parted her lips, furrowing her brows. "Did I wake you?" What a stupid question, of course she had!

Natsuki heard Mai give a low sigh on the other end followed by a chuckle. "You never stop overthinking, do you?" The younger woman's voice murmured, the rustling of sheets heard.

"No, Sarah… Go back to sleep."

"Sarah's with you?" Natsuki quirked a brow, resting back against her pillow.

"Shizuru's with you, isn't she?" Mai sounded tired, but managed to tease.

"I'm with Shizuru. That's the difference. Or are you and…?"

"Natsuki. It's too early for this." Mai dodged the question, sighing again. "Between Mikoto and whatever else has happened, don't you think we both should rest?"

"You especially—" Natsuki was interrupted, Mai scoffing.

"Not especially. Just because I was hurt doesn't mean—We're getting off track. Natsuki, I know you need rest. Just try and sleep, alright? Take your medicine if you need to."

And with that, the connection was broken.

Staring at the ceiling, Natsuki opened her mouth. Forcing her gaze across to the door, then back, she closed her mouth. "Rude." She grumbled under her breath, huffing tensely.

Now what was she supposed to do? She wasn't exactly going to risk overdosing. Let alone taking the damned medication. That stuff made her… feel strange!

She would just… relax, and try to sleep again. No doubt she would get her dose in the morning. Natsuki eased the covers onto her legs, wincing at the pressure in her thigh. She hoped Shizuru wasn't uncomfortable, but the elder hadn't stirred much.

Closing her eyes and snuggling into her lover, Natsuki sighed.

Natsuki would… at least try.

332. Garderobe Academy, the Arena Facility.

"Irina, are you sure this is fi—"

"-It's fine. Jeez, Erstin. Just commentate already."

"Bu-UAGH!"

Throughout the arena, the microphone sharply screeched through speakers. Students, Meister, and politicians alike groaned, covering their ears. As quickly as it had begun, it had ended. Relief swarmed the audience, until another interruption was announced.

"Woods, Ho. What are you doing?!"

"Eh—Miss Maria?!"

"Just get on with it." From the ground, Haruka crossed her arms tightly. Tapping her foot with an undying patience, her gaze shot to Natsuki. "You!" She accused, pointing over to her. "Why do you insist we use this… talking?!"

"...Commentary?" The Gakuenchou supplied, her eyes drifting to the index aimed at her chest. She flicked the finger away, making sure to exaggerate brushing her chest off. "Because it lets people know how the match is going. It's been a tradition for years, or don't you remember?"

"If I don't go senile from waiting an age." The blonde muttered, casting her attention to the audience. Within her own frustration, she scanned the crowd for the President. Wouldn't she be in the Column's booth…?

With the mousy woman pinpointed, she grinned widely. "Yukino!" She shouted, uncaring if not heard. With a hand directed in front of herself, she stuck her thumb up, beaming.

Bemused, Natsuki stared. Her ears twitched upon the loud invasion from the audience. Wait… they were cheering?!

If they liked that, then maybe they would enjoy it if she made a gesture to—No! She wasn't a damned prized show dog. Plus, Haruka already had a crazed fanbase. Natsuki stood straight, curling a hand into the side of her hair to brush it away. Unfortunately, this had just the same effect as Haruka's gesture; Applause and shouts resonating.

She hadn't done anything!

Flabbergasted, she swung her arms back either side of herself.

"Hey, Kruger." Haruka said, snatching back her attention. "The popularity polls are coming in soon. It'd be a… shame if I came on top?" She outright smirked over at the Gakuenchou. Facing Natsuki fully, she propped her hands to her hips. "Right?"

"Unfortunately for you, Haruka, the polls aren't just taken from Aries." Natsuki icily spoke, adjusting her silver hair clip. The Aries Otome had been annoying her for quite some time, even as much as Shizuru was being annoyed. Was the blonde now trying to one-up the Gakuenchou?

She couldn't let that happen.

"Of course I know that." The Brigadier muttered.

"With today's joining, we have a friendly match! The Gakuenchou of Garderobe, and the Aries Brigadier General! Natsuki Kruger, and Haruka Armitage!"

Instead of Erstin speaking, it was Irina. The Pearl student quickly issued the rules, and then the information.

The sky immediately split open and heaved rain upon them. Haruka jumped, startled and outraged by the rain. Natsuki stood still, almost as if she had been expecting it.

"Aha! With the announcement, the weather has changed! Say, Erstin, don't you think it's a bit… suspicious?"

"It never rains here? We are on the edge of the desert."

"Exactly."

Feeling disgruntled, Natsuki shook her head. Were they implying she could change the weather again? "Figures." She muttered under her breath, scooping a hairband out her pocket.

Tying her hair back securely, she unconsciously fiddled with her hair clip. Thinking against it, she left it in. This thing would be her death. Either way Shizuru would make fun of it.

"Scared of a little rain, Haruka?" Natsuki side-glanced her, the blonde huffing.

"You seem prepared." The Brigadier gave her a fierce glare, one that paused Natsuki before it disappeared. Instead, it was replaced by cheekiness. "Hah! You can only win when it rains, can't you?"

"I haven't won yet… Nor can I make it rain." Natsuki implored, glaring sourly.

Why did everybody-?! Cutting herself off, Natsuki strode to one of the central pillars. The blonde elder chased after her, selecting the one before Natsuki.

"We'll see, Kruger." Haruka stated, stretching out her arms above her head. With this, she rolled her shoulders, and tapped her GEM. An automatic connection? "Yukino. When will my robe materialise?"

Natsuki almost felt amused. Of course Haruka needed permission, and yet she herself had it right at her fingertips. Fumi did need to approve, obviously, but still. The power was always there to summon; Thrumming in her veins like her blood.

On her pillar, the Gakuenchou wiped rain from her brow. Readying herself to call on her robe, she waited for Haruka.

"Thirty seconds…?" The blonde nodded, glancing at Natsuki quickly. "I'll prove it to you." She grinned. Wiping a forearm across her forehead, she wet her lips. "See you later."

Rolling her eyes, Natsuki couldn't help but smile. The notion tugged at her lips, and she turned her head to the side, snickering.

"The Butou will begin in sixty seconds!"

"Materialize!" Natsuki shouted, a few strands of hair sticking to her face. Her GEM lit up, its series of menus opening to allow her robe to be summoned. The sudden display of power gave a shockwave; Exploding outwards and not allowing the rain to touch Natsuki nor her pillar for a moment.

The audience reacted with awe even though it was common. Then again, not many true Butous took place in the rain. Just… all of Natsuki's had, for whatever reason.

With blue, grey, and black now covering her form, Natsuki hovered for a moment. Setting her feet back onto the pillar securely, she awaited Haruka. In the meantime, she looked into the ground.

Unconsciously, like Haruka did, she searched the Column's booth.

Shizuru was there, looking thoroughly amused. Wondering why, Natsuki remembered that the audience could hear them. She had to refrain herself from seeming nervous, lest that be the photo some magazine would use that year. Instead, she steeled her resolve and set her eyes back to Haruka.

At last Haruka was able to materialise. Doing just that, a blinding green and yellow transpired. Throughout the arena, the audience reacted in much the same way as they had for Natsuki.

To this day, Natsuki was unable to take Haruka's robe seriously. Her eyes drifted between the spikes, then back to the general's face.

It was clear that Haruka was having trouble with the rain. It weighed her hair down and soaked it, but the Brigadier only seemed spurred on by it. This can't have been her first time fighting in such weather.

Natsuki would have to stay out of her range; Both close and from the range of her weapon. That damned morning star would hurt just as much as one of the blonde's punches, no doubt.

She was unsure whether she would be given time nor space to summon her cannon…

But like she ever had a chance to summon such a cumbersome weapon? Couldn't the stupid thing just change?!

"Thirty seconds until Butou!"

The pillars rose gradually. This last half minute transpired perfectly with this notion. As the pillars reached their full height, the audience silenced.

Natsuki supposed she could summon her weapon now, but… It wouldn't have a stylish flair, would it? Butous weren't just fights, after all. They had to be dances of grace and style…

Grace and style… her ass. Natsuki scoffed, but piped down quickly. The image of Miss Maria pinching onto her earlobe came to mind, and she winced. If only these students could see a true battle.

But that would probably get them killed.

"Fifteen seconds until Butou!"

Natsuki rolled her shoulders, sinking into a stance. The first thing she would do was commence flight. Haruka could summon her weapon right at the second it started, and she didn't want to get caught. Through the rain, she could see the other woman almost vibrating with excitement.

The boisterous Otome was practically getting ready to leap off the pillar.

"Don't jump without your robe." Natsuki snickered over to her. "We know what happened last time!"

Opening her mouth, Haruka was interrupted at the last moment.

"Commence the first match of Butou!"

Irina's voice pierced the arena, and the audience roared. If thunder was to follow, would they hear it over the cheering?

Immediately, Natsuki launched herself into the air. The chained morning star smashed atop the pillar she had been standing on—just as she thought. The Gakuenchou huffed, taking advantage of the time allotted for Haruka to pry it out. She dove down, attempting to strike the older woman.

The debris of the pillar scattered within the air. Within moments it oozed into the rain, chaotically merging with liquid. This made it all the more difficult to see the general who leapt into the cloud.

"Don't get cocky, Kruger. Stairs aren't your friend."

"Stairs?" What the hell did that mean—"Haruka!" Natsuki flushed, almost distracted. She avoided a punch with the morning star, managing to tag the elder in the back before increasing distance.

"Oh! Even with the sudden embarrassing memory, our Gakuenchou has scored the first hit! What do you make of this, Erstin?"

"I-I think it's g-good."

With the commentary blurred out, it was sent to the back of their minds. It was further dulled by the adrenaline and rain.

"Oh, come on, Ers! You can do better than that!"

"T-then! G-Gakuenchou! You can do it! Knock her out!"

"That's not… that's—"

"She's doing her best." Natsuki smirked softly, relishing in the fact of someone solidly on her side. Well, someone other than Shizuru. She deflected the next swing of the chained morning star, dodging to the left to keep out of range. She doubted she would be able to summon her cannon at all during this bout…

What a useless element…!

"It just makes me more determined!" The Brigadier stated, charging forth. Even with the counters sent her way, this didn't stop Haruka. If anything, the resistance spurred her on even more. "I'll beat you yet, Kruger!"

When was the last time she had even sparred with Haruka? Surely there was a time, yes? Natsuki couldn't remember, but she knew who would win. "What did you say earlier, Armitage? Don't be so cocky?"

"I never said I would win this Butou, did I?" Haruka was proud and confident. But she knew not to get too prideful. That was any Otome's downfall. Instead of charging forward again, she retreated a fair amount.

Wrapping her element closely to herself, she drifted. Mindful of the Gakuenchou's ranged abilities, she kept dodging incoming blows.

Haruka retreated? Natsuki eyed her contemplatively, wondering if she should try to summon her cannon.

"I think the Brigadier might be taunting the Gakuenchou to reveal her element! Erstin, your take on this?"

"I-I don't know what you mean, they just… moved away from each other?"

"Come on, Erstin! When has the Brigadier General backed off?"

"I'm not sure how to answer this… G-go, Gakuenchou!"

"Erstin…"

The audience's laughter to the commentary was beyond the duelists. Far too busy with concentrating on one another now, the two lunged. With another bolt of power, the rain was blown up, and away from the arena. Sand, debris, and rain clashed, forcing the two to back away again.

Suspended within the sky, Natsuki sought out the blonde Aresian. Where was she? Shooting her gaze from either side of the arena, she couldn't find her. The Brigadier, hiding?

Damn it. Natsuki surveyed around, going so far as to spin horizontally to view above and below her. Where was Haruka…?

Suddenly, a crumbling pierced through the rain. Shooting her head to the side, Natsuki's eyes widened. Arching backwards, a pillar was launched past her by millimeters. The stone fragmented through the impact, and debris was sent toppling in on itself.

"T-the Brigadier… threw a pillar?"

With the pillar having smashed into the arena's side, Natsuki stared. W-wha-

"Dynamite. Crusher!"

Oh no. Natsuki stumbled even in the air, dodging the debris. Haruka's chained morningstar had done much damage; Stones the size of the Gakuenchou herself being lobbed at her.

"Wow! The power behind that attack! I bet the Brigadier could even wield one of those pillars like a sword!"

"B-but she'd rather throw it, right?"

"There you go, Erstin!"

All Natsuki could think of, outside of dodging, was how much this would cost to fix. Leave it to Haruka to try and destroy the arena! Growling under her breath, Natsuki kicked against a larger piece of stone. It turned, as did she, the two horizontal in the air. Heels landing on it, she ran across the flat chunk of rock.

The smoke from the debris was hard to see through, but she managed it. "Haruka!" She shouted, hearing an amused snicker. Natsuki launched herself off of the stone, cutting through the smoke. Heaving an arm, she struck the older woman atop her head.

Stumbling in mid-air, Haruka's vision clouded. She flailed backwards, her hand shooting to Natsuki's collar. With the robe's collar grasped, Natsuki nearly choked. The blonde's weight added, the Gakuenchou and General were sent plunging into sand.

"Oh! A graceful move from the Gakuenchou ruined! The Brigadier used their own weight against them!"

"I-I don't think she meant to…"

Utterly annoyed, Natsuki wrenched herself from Haruka's grasp. Standing from the sand, she planted a heel atop the blonde's chest to keep her down. "You realize you're paying for this, right?" She asked, crossing her arms.

"For what? The nut on my—"

"Nut…?"

"...Nuts?"

At this point it was more than probable the two commentators stared at one another. The audience was brought into an awkward silence, before Haruka's intercom blared.

"E-eh?" Haruka grumbled, shoving Natsuki's foot away. The Gakuenchou pried away from her, the blonde sitting up. Pressing the intercom, she frowned.

"Her foot, Haruka! Her. Foot!"

The President's voice desperately corrected through the arena.

"I—I said that!" The Brigadier insisted. Shifting her gaze throughout the crowd, then up to Natsuki, she huffed. Jumping back onto her feet, she poised, pointing at the Gakuenchou. "We aren't finished!"

"I have the most points." Natsuki pointed out, though readied another stance. "You've absolutely made a mess of this arena."

"That's the point, Kruger! Arena's are for wars!" Summoning her element, the blonde grinned widely. With wild intention, she swung the flail around herself. The morning star barely hit the Gakuenchou, Natsuki flinging herself away.

"Haruka!" Natsuki gave her an incredulous glare, dodging behind a pillar. Pleased when it wasn't automatically smashed, the Gakuenchou rounded another to create space. She couldn't hear Haruka following, nor flying. What was her game?

Nevermind that, she didn't need to know. Jumping out into the clearing, the Gakuenchou summoned her cannon with nary a moment to spar; Heaving it onto its tripod.

Dread entered her stomach suddenly however. Haruka was charging right at her! Where had she come fr-

"The Brigadier's got a-!"

Debris from a pillar was plunged into the barrel of the Gakuenchou's element. Right at that moment, the whole arena was flooded with heated ice. The explosion pulsed, whipping up sand completely from the floor.

"Natsuki!" "Haruka!"

The Archmeister immediately left the booth, descending down upon the arena. As the sand and frost cleared, the scene was almost comical if it weren't so serious. Natsuki's arms were coated in crystal, the Gakuenchou knocked out.

Haruka was much the same, unconscious with frost coating her robe. Shizuru stared at the both of them, twenty feet now separating them.

"Wow! That was a bold move! Erstin, what do you make of that?"

"I—I—I'm—I… are they alright?!"

They could practically see the Annamese student on the edge of her seat.

Stuck where she stood, the materialised Archmeister stared. The two were still standing in their positions. The boulder was still shoved into the barrel, and Haruka's body was arching away.

Suddenly, the ice cracked and began to melt. As quickly as it sounded, the two collapsed into a heap.

"Argh!" Natsuki gripped onto Haruka's shoulders, stabilizing herself. Her element lay forgotten by her feet, much the same for Haruka's. "You could have killed us both, are you crazy?!"

"That went exactly like I wanted tit too!" Haruka defended herself, proudly standing. "I won!"

"No you didn't, buffoon! You lost!"

"It is a stalemate." Shizuru exclaimed, stopping their argument. "Haruka's last move racked up her points to match, but it seems a flash-freeze put a stop to the Butou."

The two stared at her blankly, and Shizuru sighed. Floating over towards them, she rested a palm atop Natsuki's shoulder. Ignoring the commotion of the audience, she murmured softly. "This was a friendly match."

Natsuki straightened herself, brushing frost and sand from her robe. "It was… Why the pillar, Haruka? This is going to cost a lot to fix…" She grumbled, leaning against Shizuru to survey the Brigadier.

"Don't be so gloomy, Kruger." Haruka dismissed her. The rain was beginning to die down now, and the blonde glanced up into the sky. Odd, it was a cloudless day… Jumping out of her skin, her intercom blurred at her.

Almost within reflex, the general linked herself automatically.

"Ha-ru-ka!"

Natsuki smirked but it was quickly wiped off as Shizuru nudged her. She instead took a stoic expression, cocking a brow.

Haruka flushed darkly, trying to sputter an excuse but it was no use.

"The amount of damage you've caused is twice the incident of last month!"

Through her own nerves, the Brigadier surveyed the chattering audience. The Meister and teachers alike tried to calm them. But such a thing seemed impossible with what had just transpired.

With hawking violet, Haruka's heart sank further into her chest. She caught sight of a flustered Yukino prowling down the stairs in the distance. Even this far away, she could tell the President wasn't impressed.

Noticing the Brigadier's expression, Natsuki sighed softly. With a raucous laugh, she startled the audience and faculty into silence. "Haruka! That was a fantastic fight, and one that has definitely prepared me for different opponents." She grinned, slapping the blonde on the shoulder.

"Our pillars should really be stronger than this." She added, knocking against one with her fist. How the hell did Haruka pull them out?! Sliding out of Shizuru's hold, Natsuki abruptly realised her mistake, and cursed under her breath.

This meant she would have to pay for it?! It… it was just a wall and a few pillars though. She shouldn't worry but-

"Natsuki?" The Archmeister hushed into her ear, pulling back close.

The mere action calmed Natsuki instantly, the Gakuenchou sliding a palm down her cheek. "I'm alright…" She grumbled in reply, the three of them glancing over to Yukino who halted before Haruka.

"U-um, Yuki—"

"Radio silence, please." Natsuki asked, the microphones being shut off. "President, I'll handle the costs." She spoke to Yukino, though eyed Haruka.

The general appeared genuinely surprised. Haruka opened her mouth, glancing at Yukino. "You will?"

"Haruka." The President pleaded, casting a pointed look at the blonde. "Gakuenchou. Please allow me—"

"No, President."

.

. .

. . .

There was noise around her when Natsuki woke again; Light filtering in as well. Screwing her brows together, the Gakuenchou opened her eyes. "Ah!" She reeled back, jerking her leg with a wince. Mikoto had been right in her face, the cat goddess springing back as well.

"Mikoto!" Mai admonished her, sending a faintly apologetic glance to Natsuki.

"Where's Shizuru?!" Natsuki glanced around the room, but the elder was gone. As was the wheelchair…

"She's with Yohko getting a checkup, stop worrying." Mai arched a brow, but smiled either way. She sat upon Shizuru's bed, and patted the blankets, prying Mikoto over. "She's been gone for about twenty minutes. She should be back soon."

The cat-girl shot a strange look to Natsuki, parking herself beside the redhead. With her legs crossed underneath herself, she regarded Mai silently.

"...Why are you both in here?" Natsuki calmed down, gently easing herself to lay normally. She rubbed her thigh, wincing strongly. Yukariko's arrows sure could hurt. "You wouldn't happen to have my medicine, would you?"

"What, with Mikoto here?" The royal tilted her head. Received with an odd look from Natsuki, the Zipangese leaned back. With her hands supporting her weight, she mused; her burned expression relaxing.

With such body language, Natsuki paused, studying Mai's appearance. Being reminded of their time as students, the Ariesian chewed her lip. "What about her?" She gave the wanderer a cautious glance, dragging her gaze back to Mai.

The younger Otome's skin was healing gradually but surely. The scarring which tore along Mai's face was permanent, that much was obvious. But reddened flesh was mending.

The wild fringe of the Meister's hair covered some of the burns. Though Natsuki was sure there was much more beneath clothing. In fact, she wondered how the redhead hadn't lost her hair. Let alone…

Derailing her train of thought, Natsuki shook her head.

"She eats everything."

"I get hungry." Mikoto's innocent response almost made Natsuki roll her eyes.

"Alright…" Then who did have her medicine? "Why are you… in my room, though?"

"I'm not the one who called in the middle of the night, now am I?" Mai pointedly scolded. "Sarah was called by Yohko a few hours ago, so I was moved in here. Don't bother asking me why, I wasn't told. Ah." She uttered, tracing a nail over burned skin. "Yohko has your medication in safe keeping."

"I… couldn't sleep." Natsuki gruffly murmured, crossing her arms. "I kept having these strange dreams. Rather… memories." She glared up to the ceiling, though her anger was soon lost to weariness. "Have I become a better or worse person than I was before all of this?" She suddenly questioned, lowering her gaze onto Mai.

"But it's good you're remembering." Shifting, Mai adjusted her footing. Sliding the heel of her foot against the smooth, cold floor, Mai mused. "You're doing it again, you know?" Locking their gaze, Mai leaned so she no longer supported her weight behind her.

"Doing…?" Did Mai know the true extent? "I don't remember a lot more than just what happened at Aries." Natsuki spoke, lifting a hand to her head. "I'm missing… so many pieces of my life. Even from far before that, when we were students. Every time I do remember something, it's either embarrassing or terrifying."

She quieted before mumbling, barely able to be heard. "Sometimes I think it would be better to not remember at all."

Watching Natsuki quietly, Mai regarded her. "Our student life wasn't always that bad. Do you remember anything from our hike?" Watching Mikoto boredly shuffle the sheets, the redhead exhaled. "Shizuru said sometime before you woke up that you were obsessed with the past. There were things which you just couldn't get out of your head. Though that doesn't sound all that different?"

"...No." Natsuki frowned, "It d—"

The door opened, and the three women glanced up.

Sarah returned, looking between all of them. She clung to the door slightly, before sharply tearing her gaze down the corridor. "Princess Mashiro is on her way. It's about the cats—"

"-Not again." Natsuki groaned, covering her face in her hands.

Not only did she have to deal with the cats, but the Princess?! "I'm going back to sleep." Natsuki declared, her sour mood only worsening. She threw the covers over her head, ignoring the other three.

"Don't be a baby, Natsuki." Mai scolded, shrugging as she laid back. "Thank you, Sarah… Can you bring in her medication? She really should take it soon." The younger Otome didn't seem to calm upon her question. If anything, it concerned Mai. Frowning, she continued to watch the blonde who shifted uncomfortably. "Sarah?"

"Hm? Oh." Looking down the corridor again, Sarah slipped inside. "It might take some time to get it. Doctor Helene is obsessing over the database again."

"Database?" Mikoto piped up, curiosity shining.

"It's being… buggy."

"Bugs?" Mikoto piped up again, but Mai shook her head.

"Not real bugs, Mikoto… Then, can you ask Shizuru to bring them back when she's through? I'm sure she knows which ones are Natsuki's." The Princess sighed, leaning back against her pillows.

"I'll tr—" "Sarah!" Interrupted, Sarah opened the door again, and leaned through.

"Sarah! Get back here, the firewalls are activating again!" Yohko's voice pierced through the wards.

The blonde paled, shouting back in reply. "What am I supposed to do about it?! I'm not the scientist!"

"Just get here!"

"I'm sorry." Sarah hurried. "I'll ask her—if I get the chance." She grumbled, rushing out of the room, and down the corridor. "Hold on then!"

Natsuki sighed lowly, still buried beneath her covers. Perhaps this was only a side-effect from the medicine? Her… anxiety medication, that is. It did list depression, among other things. Was this just an effect, or something more?

How could she ever begin to tell?

Minutes passed, and Natsuki said nothing to the other two. Mikoto, and Mai spoke quietly, though she didn't bother listening. In the end, Natsuki was sure hours had passed by the time the door opened again. Peeking her head from her covers, she suspiciously eyed the newcomers.

"Shizuru." She breathed in relief, though wondered why she was leaning against Laura. The Lutecian's arm was wrapped around Shizuru's waist, supporting her. Just before the door was closed, she also heard machinery bleeping.

Was Yohko still freaking out over the computer?

"You… can walk?" Natsuki gingerly sat up, rubbing her thigh. Shizuru gave a throaty chuckle, the elder sounding tired.

"I believe I was able to walk before, was I not?" Crimson winked, but Shizuru relented early. "It seems my nanomachines have finally re-awakened."

"About time. Just seeing you in that wheelchair was… weird." Laura made a face, escorting the older woman to Natsuki's bed.

Watching the two women, Mai spoke. "But you are barely using your right leg."

The statement brought Natsuki's attention to Shizuru's limb. It was indeed the case, the elder limping upon the faintest weight.

"We might be Otome, but we do not heal that quickly." The Archmeister chuckled softly. Nodding to Laura, Shizuru's form somewhat relaxed as she sat.

"I better go before Yohko has another panic attack." Laura rolled her eyes, but smiled either way. Waving simply to Natsuki, and Mai, she retreated out of the room.

"A-ah, Laura!" Mai called sharply, the Lutecian shoving her head through the door. Blinking, she arched her brow.

"What?"

"Can you get Natsuki's medicine? Sarah didn't."

"Yeah, of course. Shizuru just had her dose, so… She'll be a little out of it." Laura snickered, obviously having objected to it already. She left the room, returning a few moments later with the pills and a cup.

"Thank you, Laura." Taking them quickly, Natsuki drank the water messily. Shizuru rose her sleeve to clean the droplets spilled, smiling faintly.

"My Natsuki is still so messy…"

"Stop teasing me, Shizuru." Natsuki mumbled, turning slightly to the elder as she leaned against her. "Shizuru?" She murmured, the brunette's head resting against her shoulder.

"So a high Shizuru is basically a drunk Shizuru?" Mai inquired, looking between the two women. She grinned, Mikoto pointing.

"That's gay!"

"When did she learn that?" Natsuki narrowed her eyes, almost forgetting Mikoto's age. Or… her supposed age. How old was the cat-goddess?

"Mikoto, that's not polite. Though, absolutely accurate." Mai snickered, ruffling the shorter's hair.

Natsuki flushed, leaning back against Shizuru. She had missed the elder, even within the short time spent apart. Closing her eyes, she breathed in the Archmeister's scent even with the stinging aroma of sterile surroundings.

"Who's gay?" Shizuru's eyes opened, regarding Mikoto oddly. The cat-girl grinned wildly, and she arched her brow. "Oh?"

"We once had a vote, you know?" Mai spoke, fiddling mindlessly with her sleeve. "It was when me and Natsuki were Corals."

Natsuki quirked a brow, not remembering this either. "What?"

"It came down to a close vote, but it was determined that Shizuru was the biggest gay in existence." Mai spoke matter-of-factly, prompting a snort from Mikoto.

Shizuru merely stared, as if only hearing the statement seconds later. She chuckled, leaning her head against Natsuki's to nuzzle against. The Gakuenchou flushed, sputtering as she tried to return the affection in a private way.

"I don't remember that at all." Natsuki murmured, holding one of Shizuru's hands.

"You don't?" Mai tilted her head into the pillow to regard them further. "Though then again…" Smoothing her fingers against her lip, Mai snickered. "You were practically half asleep that day. Something about… Miss Maria and homework."

"Always Miss Maria." The Gakuenchou muttered, playing with Shizuru's fingers. The padding was still so rough. Sliding her thumb across Shizuru's knuckles, she sighed. "Who were the runners up then?" Who could possibly be as… gay as Shizuru?

"You, of course. Then, believe it or not, Rosalie."

"M-me?!" Natsuki flushed even darker, gaping.

"Everyone knew you paid for Rosalie's tattoo… Plus, your closeness with Shizuru. Didn't take a genius." Mai winked, chuckling softly.

Natsuki felt bad, especially since she had been… dating the Zipang woman at the time. There was very little she could actually remember of their past relationship. Except… that time they had almost… Flushing brighter than a lightbulb, she groaned. Hiding into Shizuru's neck, she grumbled. "How am I gayer than you?"

"But Natsuki lost to me." Shizuru reminded, kissing the younger woman's head. She still found it utterly hilarious that Laura had gotten Natsuki drunk… She thought that feat was impossible.

"Mai… Has anyone but Laura ever managed to successfully get Natsuki drunk?" The Archmeister suddenly asked, Mai appearing thoughtful.

"Hm… No, I don't think so. Then again, I never drank. I saw her drink a lot one night, though. I thought I might have to carry her back, but she was fine. Huh…" She glanced over at Shizuru, a sly grin coming across her features.

"Are you thinking what I am?"

"Please enlighten me." Natsuki groaned, covering the Archmeister's mouth. She hid the full fledged smirk which cast upon Shizuru's lips handedly. "I'm pretty sure I have gotten drunk. Even if I only have half a memory." She rolled her eyes, jumping when she felt Shizuru's tongue against her hand. "Shizuru!" She exclaimed, a throaty laugh sounding from the brunette.

"We can get Natsuki drunk…" Shizuru smirked, wrapping an arm around her lover. "She needs to relax, yes?" The elder snickered further, gently pinching Natsuki's cheek.

"I don't think getting drunk at a time like this would be very good…" Trying to object, Natsuki was quickly hushed.

"I think it's perfect. You do seem tightly wound, more than usual and much more than you did before the invasion. You may just need to… let go, and forget. At least for a few hours or so, hm?" Mai smiled, though Natsuki could still see deviousness.

"What makes you think that?" Natsuki mumbled, clasping her hands to Shizuru's shoulders. Frowning at Mai, she pulled her attention to Shizuru. "And you can stop smirking at me!"

"I am?" The Archmeister grinned further, brushing their lips together.

"S-Shizuru!"

Rolling her eyes, Mai sighed, Mikoto pointing haphazardly again. "Mikoto, now will you tell me why you're here?"

"No way!" The goddess exclaimed, grounding her hands into her knees. Rocking backwards and forwards, she intensely stared at Natsuki.

"S-s-s-stop staring at me, runt!" The Gakuenchou yapped, having a high Shizuru steal her lips once more.

"Shizuru…" Natsuki leaned away, wincing. The elder stopped immediately, though pouted.

"Ara, Natsuki's medicine has not kicked in yet?" Sympathetic, Shizuru kissed her head instead. The overflow of open affection wasn't exactly new, but it made Natsuki flustered all the same.

"It's been literally two minutes, you mad woman!" Huffing, Natsuki shook her head. Instead, she curled an arm around the Archmeister's waist. She was tempted to pull the elder over, and was about to. At the last minute, she relented, remembering Shizuru's hip. "How is your hip now…?" She asked, stretching over so she could look at the woman's other side.

It was covered by clothing, so either way she saw nothing.

"Healing, now that my nanomachines are waking up again." Shizuru lifted up the hem of her shirt, though a little too high for Natsuki.

Laughing nervously, the Gakuenchou grasped the hem and lowered it. "That's fine, then." She murmured, peeking at the area and the bandages. Her thigh was still annoyingly painful, but she figured it was because of an Otome's weapon instead of a bullet.

"You show me yours, and I'll show you mine." Mai snorted from her bed, Mikoto grinning toothily.

"Mai! Don't give her ideas!"

"Whatever do you mean?" Mai questioned, tilting her head, though a subtle grin betrayed her.

"Perhaps I do need to see Natsuki's wound…"

"That's what." Natsuki huffed softly, shaking her head and gently urging Shizuru to rest.

"Has my mother been by?" Emerald shifted over to Mai again, a hand in tawny hair to pet through. It was… odd that Saeko wouldn't have come to see her.

"Oh, she's tried." The redhead sounded. "She was practically clawing the door before someone dragged her out. I don't think Yohko is allowing anyone down again." Flashing a glance to the door, Mai shifted in her bed slightly.

Well, that certainly made sense. "Oh." Natsuki was glad to hear the reasoning behind it, rubbing the nape of her neck again. "I wonder if the campus is still flooded with cats, or if we got them all down here?"

"Most were in the arena but... " Glancing at Mikoto, Mai paused. The cat goddess caught her eye, and she changed her mind from whatever she thought. "I heard something about the Princess being contacted. She should be coming to fetch her cat after the meetings."

Though there were multiple Mikoto-cats.

Mai still found it hilarious how the royal cat had the same name as Mikoto.

"The Princess… Of course." Natsuki narrowed her eyes, sighing. "I had forgotten she would be here… Wait, Sarah said… she was on her way?" The Gakuenchou started to panic, obviously about to stand. "T-then we need to prepare!"

Shizuru's arms linked around her just in time, and she was forced in place. "Bad, Natsuki. She knows panicking will get her nowhere."

"B-but, Shiz—"

"No buts." Shizuru smiled, tapping a fingertip to the Gakuenchou's lips.

"Uh…"

Mai snickered, having to fan her face lest tears stream down it. "I forgot how funny you two could be." She took a breath, still rather amused. "I'm sure someone will be along to help us all prepare soon."

The Gardens, Garderobe Academy. Three hours later.

"Mother! I told you, I'm fine." Natsuki insisted, prying Saeko's hands away from herself.

They all sat amongst various chairs and tables within a clearing. Practically all of the Meister, teachers, and staff were here. It was annoyingly crowded, but at least Natsuki wasn't underground.

To and fro assistants ran. They organized the area with palace servants instructing them. It was still a strange concept to Natsuki. Many of their Otome were royals, yet they never got special treatment.

Shaking her head, Natsuki sighed, giving into Saeko. "I know you're worried, mother." She muttered, the elder Kruger clinging to her instantly.

"Naaattttsssuuukkki!"

"No." Natsuki hissed softly, toying with the flute glass in her hand. Technically she wasn't supposed to drink on her medication, but she had an insane tolerance to alcohol after all. Her cane was propped up against the side of her thigh, draped in a careless way.

Before they had convened to the gardens, Saeko had demanded privacy with her. Natsuki shifted her legs, sighing to herself. Privacy had meant to be given another uniform. She had tried to tell her mother that there was nothing wrong with her simple suit, but…

There was no telling a countess that a simple suit was fine. At the very least, Natsuki was thankful it was no dress. The thick black trousers were almost completely obstructed by the tall silver boots that stopped just below her knees. They were shined and buckled with gold; Saeko fussed that she did not set them in the dirt.

They were in the garden, dirt was everywhere! Natsuki tugged at the collar of her jacket, wincing when Saeko fixed it.

"I feel ridiculous!" She yapped, pulling her short jacket further around her waistcoat. What even was this uniform?! It was like that horrific dress of hers merged with her previous Gakuenchou uniform!

"Natsuki, please don't be so fussy. This is the Kruger Regalia!" Saeko smiled happily, adjusting her glasses. She fixed what Natsuki had missed, and even fixed the gold aiguillette ropes that decorated her right shoulder.

"Don't you think this is a bit… much?" It was clear the elder did not. Saeko wasn't even dressed as elegantly!

"Your dual importance of positions as Gakuenchou and Countess means a lot. Even if you won't use them." Saeko sighed, fussing a bit over her. Natsuki pointedly stared at Shizuru to her side, silently begging for help.

Tugging at her armband, Natsuki shot another glance at Shizuru. She was ignoring her!

Feeling excessively uncomfortable, Natsuki grumbled, and shifted in her seat.

"Besides." Saeko spoke, pointing a lone finger to Miss Maria. "The boots, trousers, waistcoat, and jacket are now in your dress code." The elder Kruger grinned deviously. "Your wife—" "We aren't even married yet!—" "Oh, Natsuki? How daring!"

Practically the whole of the garden had heard her. Sinking into the garden seat, Natsuki groaned. She peered over to Shizuru, and caught the elder's eye.

The two of them were painfully sober. For the best, of course, but still… Shizuru raised a hand, the back of it against her lips as she smiled at her lover. "Natsuki is such a romantic." Crimson winked, the elder chuckling.

Shizuru was dressed in new attire too. She wore a thick blouse of sorts which had a folded design etched into it. The blouse was rather fitting on her figure, though the bottom buttons were purposely undone. Not as in a way to tease, but for her own comfort due to her hip.

With a crimson bow around the collar, it contrasted nicely with her eyes.

Even though the black trousers Shizuru wore were simplistic, they impacted upon her new uniform perfectly. They weren't too loose, or too tight. Again, purposeful due to her condition.

Staring at Shizuru, Natsuki couldn't help herself. Even a few chairs away, she picked up the whole detail. "U-um. I like the new uniforms, actually." She yapped, her eyes dropping to Shizuru's boots.

They were as tall as Natsuki's own… Someone cleared her throat, to which Natsuki responded slowly. Dragging her gaze from Shizuru, the Gakuenchou blinked to regain focus. She adjusted her white gloves, glancing around to find who had wanted her attention.

Saeko was the culprit; The elder woman had taken her champagne flute too! "You were about to spill it." Her mother winked, passing it back.

Face utterly red, Natsuki nodded and took a sip. Well, it wasn't her fault that Shizuru was… distracting. Yes, that was the word.

"Somebody's got bedroom eyes." Was whispered into her ear, and she choked on her drink. Coughing, the Gakuenchou shoved the glass to the table, and twisted around.

"Z-Zhang?!" Natsuki flustered loudly, the redhead smirking as she took a step back. "Where did you come from?!"

"Hiyooo…" The Altain drawled, waving absently. Tucking an arm under her breasts, she tilted her head, smirking. "Like my dress, Kruski? I've had it since last year." She lazily traced the corner of her lips, taking care to not smudge red lipstick.

Getting a blank look from Natsuki, she rolled her eyes. "It's a cheongsam." She informed, allowing her arms to drop to her sides.

"Yes… I can tell." Natsuki muttered, pinching the bridge of her nose.

The Altain dress was red and black in colour. It was of the traditional style from the looks of it too. There was a slit in the side so one of the student's legs was revealed. Upon the redhead's feet, were simple flats.

"Anyway, what are you doing here?" Natsuki blinked, not trusting her.

"I'm a part of the Five Columns now, remember? Whole secret underground initiation…" Nao at least had the decency to whisper, no others hearing. "In reality, or at least to everyone else, Hexade membership."

Natsuki narrowed her eyes, though remembered having reached a stalemate with the redhead. "Mm… Your cheongsam is very pretty." She murmured, turning faintly to better see Nao.

Nao cocked her brow. "A compliment?" Propping a hand to her hip, she glanced over to Shizuru. The Archmeister was staring directly at her. Wafting her fingers to the elder, she grinned. Having crimson narrow in response, she snorted. "Anyway, enough tormenting the pup. I have a feeling Viola might fly out her chair at me—busted hip and all."

Drifting away from the Gakuenchou, she waved. "Ciao."

Returning her gaze to Shizuru, Natsuki cleared her throat softly. She drained her flute and set the glass away, still quite taken with the elder's appearance. She glanced around, emeralds falling back to her lover. "I love you." She mouthed, face flushing.

So content with one another, Natsuki wondered if they would pounce one another at this rate. Even amongst the crowd of women, Natsuki took notice of only Shizuru. Settling her cane onto the ground, she steadily stood.

Ignoring the sting of her thigh, she edged over to the Archmeister.

"Why are you not seated at my table?" Natsuki pouted, stealing an empty seat. Ignoring her mother's whispered huffs, the Gakuenchou subtly fixed her draping side-cape. What did Shizuru think of her new uniform?

"My, Natsuki. You're lucky that it is Sarah's seat." This was the section where the Columns were positioned, after all. "Any more of that blushing, and you might explode."

"I'd have you to blame for it, then." Natsuki turned the tease around on Shizuru, grinning. "Where has this little number been hiding, hm?"

"Natsuki honestly thinks my clothes are so good?" The Archmeister questioned, smiling. She had noticed the switch of personality the moment it happened. Watching the younger woman carefully, she hummed. "Wherever is your mind flying to, Natsuki?" She brushed her fingers to her own lips, grinning.

"I'd say we need to find some proper alone time, later." Natsuki's eyes flicked down to Shizuru's lips. "Perhaps put this aiguillette to better use?" She cocked a brow, watching for her lover's reaction.

"Hmm…? Surely she knows my strength?" The Archmeister playfully replied. She leaned in closer to the younger woman teasingly. "Not that I would deny such an activity."

A beep trespassing into their ears, the two women paused. The intercoms were automatically connected with another's, and the Otome silenced.

"This is Maria Graceburt. The Princess will be arriving shortly. I am about to escort her from the gates."

"I suppose I will see you later…" Natsuki rose, kissing Shizuru's cheek before she returned to her table. She already missed the elder, and wondered if it was normal. Straightening her regalia, she sat proudly and waited.

"Like a kicked puppy." Shizuru chuckled softly. She watched after the younger woman, carefully adjusting herself.

This new uniform was surprisingly comfortable. It was probably a lot more practical too. Though skirts had indeed been part of the dress code, they had been…

Distracting? No. An ignorance. Though personally Shizuru couldn't believe she was even thinking such a thing. Shaking her head subtly, she nodded as Sarah greeted her. The Ariesian sat herself down beside her, the fellow Column momentarily cleaning her glasses.

"We're having Natsuki's mother sit next to her." She confirmed, wiping her glasses with a cloth. "I doubt she would appreciate Mahya sitting next to her."

"Definitely not, no." The Archmeister nodded in agreement.

The servants and assistants had all but disappeared. Where to, Shizuru had no idea. Most of the participants had seated themselves, many hurrying to their seats.

One was Mahya. The darkly skinned woman eyed Natsuki cautiously, sitting beside Shizuru.

Natsuki caught the cautious look, giving a wave of her fingers to the older woman. Shizuru wasn't sure if it was to be at peace, or antagonize Mahya more. She leaned in to speak softly to the other two either way.

"Natsuki's personality switched again. I am… not sure if it is the same now, or another."

The Mauryan nodded, staring at the garden table in thought for a moment. Regarding Shizuru silently, she leaned in closely. "How long ago? Will it endanger the meeting with the Princess?" As she studied Shizuru, Mahya watched Natsuki from the corner of her eye.

"Moments before, when she returned to her seat. I believe it could help the meeting. The personality she switched to is one I have seen before, and is more… confident." Shizuru hummed lowly, then frowned. "Just do not confront her."

"You think I am insane?" Mahya arched her brow. Her stoic expression relaxed, and she breathed a laugh. "Whatever the case maybe, we know the worst she can do is get embarrassed."

Or at least she hoped so.

"I just hope she does not pick a fight." Shizuru smiled faintly, happily leaning against her chair. "Or… demonstrate her new abilities."

Natsuki hadn't played around with her crystal-making in days. Had she forgotten about it, or simply chose not to indulge herself? It could truthfully be either…

On the other side of the table, there was a servant who appeared. Shizuru instantly recognised her as being Mashiro's personal maid. From the looks of it, the brunette seemed incredibly confused.

Perhaps it was due to the numerous cats prowling around the grounds?

Though as meowing and purring sounded, many women looked around the gardens. Abruptly sneezing too, this no doubt being from Yukariko.

"The cats!"

Shizuru sighed, chuckling only softly. Why did the Princess have so many cats? Surprised when one brushed against her leg, the Archmeister looked down. It was the one that had reminded her of Natsuki earlier! With a glance to make sure no one watched, Shizuru deposited the small kitten into her lap.

Instantly the small feline shuffled within her lap before settling. Planting her hand atop its back, she leaned into her chair.

"Aoi!" The Princess called as she strode into view. For what mumbling which had transpired, it had all but diminished. Silently the women watched as the royal strode up to the table.

Making a stop beside the maid, Mashiro appeared mystified. "What's with the… cats?" She asked, looking around at the felines and Otome. Feeling awkward from the staring, the Princess hawked her gaze to Natsuki.

"Gakuenchou." She greeted the Ariesian noble who nodded in regards.

"Princess. Are… these cats not yours, then?" Natsuki cautiously tested the waters, standing from her seat. She grabbed one carefully, holding it up for Mashiro to see. It was identical to her Mikoto cat, as was the one the Gakuenchou pointed at next.

"Eh." Staring, Mashiro's mouth opened. Frowning, she quickly closed her mouth. "M-Mikoto had disappeared but…" Looking between the multiple cats, the Princess stood stunned.

"So… no?" Natsuki supplied, blinking as the fat cat began to screech and fight in her hold.

Setting it away, the Gakuenchou clasped a white glove to her jaw. "Well, then…?" Wait. "Mikoto…" The Cat Goddess. It all made sense.

Feeling an annoyance and mild anger ooze into her gut, Natsuki paused. Sliding a hand down her cheek, she sighed. "Please, Princess. Sit." She gestured to the chair next to Aoi. Though she pointed to the one beside Mashiro, Aoi shook her head softly.

The maid simply stood beside the seated Princess, her hands folded before her.

She just didn't understand Aoi. Natsuki took her seat once more, adjusting her jacket as she did so. "An influx of cats have come along with the aftermath of the… failed assassination." She explained, watching Mashiro carefully.

"There are many overweight cats which we had suspected to be yours. But that no longer seems to be the case." Thinking, Natsuki continued. "As you were informed, this double assassination attempt was located in Wind City."

"Do you know who these guys… were?" The royal asked, awkwardly looking towards some of the fat cats. All of them looked like Mikoto! What was even happening anymore? Her brow twitched, shooting her gaze back to the Gakuenchou. "I've seen the video but—"

Should she say that even though she hadn't seen the footage yet? Most likely not. "No doubt they were connected to the Schwartz invasion…" Natsuki sighed, rubbing over her thigh. "It is very… complicated, Princess. We barely escaped with our lives as it was."

"It would definitely suit the Schwartz to be the ones. Only they know how to control SLAVES, as far as I'm concerned."

Natsuki winced. Oh, wouldn't this girl have a field day if she knew about the Cat Goddess?

The gardens were all but silent, except for the occasional sneeze, and meow. Many of the Otome had taken to ignoring Yukariko's misfortune. Though by Natsuki's distance, she caught sight of Miss Maria.

Miss Maria offered tissues to the brunette teacher, Yukariko gladly taking them.

"... Garderobe and Windbloom have always had close ties." Natsuki murmured, pulling her focus from the two, back onto the Princess. "With your aid, we're wishing to make an agreement."

"I am willing." Mashiro cocked a brow, adjusting her seating. "To one condition."

Natsuki sat straight back against her chair, resting her hand atop her wound. "That being?" She asked, brows furrowed just the slightest. If what Mashiro wanted was too outlandish, as she was wont to do, they could never reach a plateau.

"I am looking for an Otome. Preferably the one who uses either the Lofty Crimson Jade, or the Sky Blue Sapphire." Mashiro spoke calmly, arching a brow when Natsuki paled. "Is something the matter?"

"Of course not." Natsuki tersely denied, raising a hand. "Why those two, precisely?" She adjusted her hair-clip, putting on an amused expression.

"Why not? They have traditionally been used by my family's Otome. They're definitely powerful GEMs too. That is, if you have a better idea?" Though honestly Mashiro felt no need for any other GEMs.

"Powerful GEMs doesn't necessarily mean the Meister given it knows how to use it. But, if you insist… the Sky Blue Sapphire you shall have." Natsuki hid a smile, all the more amused. Arika absolutely drove Mashiro up the wall, and they would have a stronger alliance. So all in all, it was the perfect package for her. Though honestly there was something she felt she should be remembering about that GEM…

Shrugging it off, she sighed, and called for the blonde Column. "Sarah?"

The fellow Ariesian was by her side quickly, handing over a pile of documentation. Nodding to the younger woman, she spoke once more. "These documents detail Aries key movements, and possible strategies. We've had many Otome watch the Hexagon closely for any suspicious activity."

"If possible—" Natsuki cut herself off, frowning lightly. It was against her that she had not yet seen the footage of the attack. "Might we discuss the attack itself in length sometime later?"

"Hm, of course." The Princess spoke, taking the documentation carefully. Scanning the papers, she turned a page at a time. "... As for the cats, I have no ide—Eh?" Dumbstruck, the royal stared over Natsuki's shoulder.

Many of the other Meisters had followed Mashiro's actions; surprise cutting across the grounds.

"Hm?" Natsuki quirked her brows, gingerly shifting her legs to look over her own shoulder. What was causing all this-? Jaw dropping faintly, Natsuki watched as the hordes of cats seemed to file neatly towards a woman.

The woman was of average height, and had her hair tied back. From Natsuki's distance, it appeared to be in a neat bun with ribbons loosely hanging. Two thin strands of hair framed her face; loosely hung.

Hang on. Natsuki frowned, gaping at the same time. The woman was also sporting a white kimono with crimson flowers-

"Lady Hinagiku?" Shizuru sounded, most of the crowd's attention being snatched to her.

"Shizuru's nanny…?" Natsuki murmured to herself, attention back to Mashiro. "Excuse me, Princess." She gave a small smile, checking around for her cane. Right as she went to grab it, a fat Mikoto cat batted it away and rolled it over the grass.

"H-hey!" The Gakuenchou huffed after it, grimacing as she stood without it.

Fighting the urge to kick the feline, she pawed at her seat. The Columns around her made a move to help her, but the Gakuenchou shook her head.

"Is the… Gakuenchou alright?" The Zipangese noble loomed closer to Natsuki. The way she held herself was very similar to Shizuru. Except for this noble, there was an… overpowering sense to it.

Her fingers were threaded together just below the sash tied around her middle. Once prying closer to the younger woman, she kept a respectable distance. "The staff were… rather surprised to see me." She declared, momentarily searching the area.

Shizuru immediately perked up, though felt a stab of guilt as Natsuki struggled to pick up her cane. Pressure relieved, the Gakuenchou straightened out her regalia and smiled at the older woman. "I will be fine…" She glanced back to Shizuru, giving a slight bow to the Zipangese noble.

Limping to Shizuru, Natsuki noticed that Tomoe was staring harshly at the new arrival. Was there something wrong?

Thinking nothing else of it, she guided the Hinagiku towards Shizuru. She assumed the Zipangese noble would want to sit beside Shizuru, given their relationship. But—Sarah stood up before she could stop the younger woman Ariesian.

The blonde gestured to her own seat by the Archmeister, nodding to the Gakuenchou. "Don't worry Natsuki, it's just a seat." Sarah acknowledged the elder, shaking her head lightly.

"Thank you, Sarah." Natsuki nodded, turning back to the noble woman. "Then, welcome to Garderobe, Lady Hinagiku…" She was unsure of how to address the Zipangese noble; Subtly bowing her head. It wasn't as if she could pull off a formal bow to the woman with her thigh…

"My." The elder drawled, an accent drifting into the Gakuenchou's ears. It brought Natsuki to a halt, and she glanced back up to her. "I have heard a lot about the battle pup." She grinned softly, pinching Natsuki's cheek delicately, she tugged. "Shizuru here has absolutely gushed her heart out."

Natsuki stared, ears turning red as well as her cheeks. Battle pup…? She had forgotten all about hearing that nickname. With what confidence she had left, the Gakuenchou sent a fairly shy smirk to Shizuru.

The elder was also flushed, fingertips covering her lips. Oh, so someone could embarrass Shizuru…? Natsuki smirked wider, feeling triumphant. "I hope to meet expectations, then."

If Natsuki's and Shizuru's embarrassment didn't show, she'd be amazed. Pulling back from Hinagiku, Natsuki sighed. With the noble seated, Natsuki hobbled back to a confused Mashiro.

"I think that might solve the case of the cats…" She still wasn't sure, however. Natsuki gingerly sat back down, draping her cane close. "Forgive the interruption, Princess. Please, go on?"

Cautious of Hinagiku, Natsuki watched her from the corner of her eye. The cats were still hanging around the Zipangese woman. For whatever reason was completely beyond her. But either way, this would hopefully get rid of their infestation.

Somehow?

What had they been discussing earlier? Natsuki took a sip from her glass to remember, but only seemed to recall something about the cats. "Well, if this solves our problem, we should be burdenless very soon."

"Which are you talking about, Gakuenchou? The cats, or Schwartz?" Mashiro cocked a brow, snickering. Her expression relaxing after a moment, the royal sank back into conversation. "I'm surprised. The rest of you sure are quiet." She aimed at the Meister, some being pulled out of their daydreams.

"Forgive me." Mahya smiled at the Princess, bowing her head. "Some of us are still reeling and recovering, Your Highness." She held an arm across her stomach, Natsuki inwardly rolling her eyes.

How could her ribs still be hurt?

"From the recent attacks, I'm not surprised." The Princess acknowledged. She too was curious about Hinagiku, and watched the woman out of the corner of her eye. Who was this noble? Was it a good idea to have her listening in? "For the most part I've managed to keep Aries at bay. But who's to say they won't make an alliance with either the Schwartz or Altai Principality?"

"There has been evidence throughout the years that Altai is working with Schwartz." Natsuki stated.

The Altai Principality controlled most of the Golden Mountain border. It was the landmass which separated the Principality from Southern Altai. "If we can support Southern Altai then…"

"Overthrow the Duke?" The Princess supplied, startling Natsuki. "He's corrupt. I wouldn't be surprised if he had enslaved the Altai Otome who went missing those years back." Mashiro shrugged.

Missing? Natsuki frowned.

Did she not remember this, or was this something she didn't know? What a stupid question. Of course she would know. She would have to ask Shizuru about that later…

"Ah, so you would be behind Garderobe in the event of another attack? We can watch the footage of the last one together soon."

At this point, would it be a good idea? She had already started her intention however. So either way there was no getting out of this. Leaning into the chair, Natsuki exhaled, and leaned towards Saeko.

She was immensely surprised her mother hadn't uttered a word. With the elder Kruger being so silent, Natsuki would've assumed she was ill. "What time is it?" She whispered to Saeko, the countess pushing her jacket sleeve up.

"It's 3:47pm."

"Thank you." Natsuki felt her mother gently pat her shoulder, and returned her attention to Mashiro.

Shizuru was conversing happily with Lady Hinagiku, their voices hushed but utterly accented. She wondered what exactly they were discussing… Would it be good for her to see the footage for the very first time with Mashiro? There was no taking back her offer, however.

"I assume you're aware of my newfound abilities, then?"

"You're lucky Wind's anti-terrorism forces got in so quickly. The whole world would've known otherwise." Mashiro rolled her eyes, luring a fluster from Natsuki. The Princess ignored the reaction, continuing. "I do know, and trusted advisors do. Although there were reports of…" The Princess paused, thinking back. "Aries suddenly had a national blackout just after the first Garderobe invasion. Only briefly, but it might suggest they were either attacked, or aided."

"I… cannot actively imagine President Chrysant aiding such terrorists. That is, if she still clings to power." Natsuki answered, an edge in her voice. That wasn't fair, or was it? They still had no idea what spurred Haruka to attack her…

"The broadcasts we've sent seem to have only infuriated Schwartz. Their attack, however, was… sloppy. Both, that is."

But either way they had both been effective. But if Schwartz were to catch them off guard again, they'd have to do it properly. There seemed to be a pattern emerging that Natsuki was sure they were quickly learning. For what that was…

"They make their biggest impacts with what power they have. The first invasion were dead Otome, and the assassina-

The dragon. Mikoto's SLAVE.

Could they be… the same? SLAVEs? But, they acted so differently from the ones with Masters. Defeating the dragon hadn't killed anyone, at least, not anyone she saw. Mikoto's SLAVE seemed utterly devoted to her will, and not at all mechanical…

Natsuki brought a gloved hand up to cup her chin, thinking hard. Could this mean that there were organic SLAVEs? Living beings? But the sheer idea seemed absolutely insane! But so was the concept of an extinct species such as the dragon attacking them.

"Gakuenchou?"

Derailed from her train of thought, Natsuki stared at the table. "... How much information does Windbloom currently hold for the Schwartz? Is it possible we lure them into a killing zone?" Taking another slow sip of her champagne, Natsuki set the glass down once more.

"Smith seems to be the ringleader. If we manage to sever his ties with the rest, they may fall back." Of course, severing that meant his death.

Natsuki would thoroughly enjoy that.

Shizuru watched, focusing on Lady Hinagiku a moment later. To have the elder here was perfectly surreal; Despite the Archmeister having been the one to invite her. Or, had the Zipangese noble invited herself…? Truly, who would ever know?

"How has Shizuru been since… the assassination attempt? I am so relieved to see her recovering so well." Hinagiku murmured, smiling. For a split moment, she surveyed the grounds, looking for another. Catching her daughter's eye from her distance, there was a quiet acknowledgement. For only a moment this transpired, Hinagiku focusing upon the Archmeister. "I have never seen such security like this. Though it does not feel… threatening? Like an officer with a rifle?"

"I have been well." Shizuru bowed her head faintly, smiling. "Natsuki has been having… a much harder time." Though to look at the Gakuenchou now, one would hardly believe that. The Archmeister wondered if her personality had switched back yet, or was still changed? "We have thankfully persevered to keep a closer eye on things." With the Windbloom Princess here, they had no excuse either. Not that endangering themselves and the public was an excuse. But still. "Admittedly it has become the norm; our defence still fails to rival what it had been decades previous."

A few servants had returned with a large screen, and Shizuru let surprise and worry fall onto her expression. Mashiro must want to watch the footage again, and this would be Natsuki's first time witnessing it.

"I would hardly say your defence fails… After all, the little battle pup did well to take down opponents far beyond her kin." Hinagiku gave a mysterious smile, holding herself proudly. "Shall we watch and judge once more?"

A panic rose within the Archmeister's gut. Unconsciously she nodded, and inwardly cursed. Natsuki hadn't seen the video! They were surrounded! How was-

"Shizuru." The Gakuenchou called, tugging the elder's attention to her. Natsuki smiled softly, and slid her glass away from herself. "Are you coming to see?" She asked, gradually bringing herself to her feet.

Prying over towards the brunette, Natsuki set a hand atop the elder's chair. "Shizuru?" She frowned, watching her expression. Was something wrong? "You seem… troubled?"

Natsuki was still set within her other personality, Shizuru realised. Glancing up to the younger Otome, she smiled. "She will have to help me, I am afraid."

"Of course." The Gakuenchou smiled, handing her cane to Shizuru. "Pardon me, Lady Hinagiku." She made sure to bow her head, gently helping the Archmeister to stand. Taking her cane back, Natsuki offered her free arm to escort the elder over.

"How is your pain?" Walking with Shizuru towards her table, Natsuki made sure not to exert herself.

Her pain? The Archmeister echoed internally. For some reason, such a sentence sounded as if it didn't belong to Natsuki. Had she swapped again? "No. Nothing unbearable." Shizuru murmured, leaning into the shorter woman for support.

"Let me know if that changes." Natsuki murmured, giving Shizuru her own seat. The screen was set up completely, the remote given to Mashiro. The Gakuenchou nicked an empty seat and took her place, nodding her readiness.

How these servants had set the TV up and the wiring so quickly was beyond them. But then again, they were the servants of this Princess. Sliding the chair up beside Shizuru, Natsuki sat.

Mashiro was sitting on Shizuru's opposite side. Shizuru wondered why she was in the middle. Surely Natsuki would…? Brushing the thought aside, the Archmeister glanced across the area.

It was almost as if she was entertained without viewing.

Natsuki noticed this, and would've asked. That would have been if she hadn't been interrupted by the video.

The Gakuenchou leaned forward carefully, an elbow against her uninjured thigh. The hand of the arm propped supported her jaw, and she watched as the footage began.

Shizuru worried for Natsuki, but never let it show on her face. There were so many ways the younger woman could react; most deemed too violent to entertain. How would she react to this? Shizuru could only imagine it would be negative. But in all fairness, she believed Natsuki—she had to.

As the video continued, Natsuki frowned. She absorbed the scene set before her; it felt more like a film. Let alone a memory which had recently happened to her, and Shizuru.

"...My." Hinagiku spoke from behind them, causing Natsuki to jump.

"I have no doubt that I have never seen someone so determined." The noble woman softly spoke, her voice oddly calming to Natsuki. She felt her ears redden, focusing on the footage once more. She had just used her cannon to level the building the sniper had been on-

That SLAVE nearly had her jumping again! The size of it… She fought and won?

With the footage ending, Natsuki stared at the blank screen. She had done that? Honestly? Even though she had solid proof in front of her, Natsuki still couldn't believe it!

"Is she alright?" Shizuru inquired, settling a hand atop Natsuki's forearm.

Natsuki twisted, shooting her gaze from the TV, to the Archmeister. "A...aa. Yes." She murmured, frowning.

Those hand-cannons, though… She wondered if she could possibly materialize them instead of her solitary cannon? What a game changer that would be…

The Gakuenchou cleared her throat, sitting back against her chair. She turned towards Mashiro, addressing her softly. "Your thoughts, Princess?" They had watched the footage for ideas, of course.

"They have an army. Though it wasn't used well, from the looks of it." Mercenaries? From the distance of the sniper, and their cover, it was impossible to tell. If they got a hold of the weapons, then…? "The quality of their gear would give us a clue for how well… supplied they are."

Taking a glass from Aoi, the royal grumbled to herself. "Of all places, it had to be there… Why didn't they use their heads…" Taking a sip from the drink, she cringed, putting it onto the table. "What is this?" Her face twisted with disdain.

"Champagne." Natsuki murmured absentmindedly, though took Mashiro's glass to inspect. "Just that." She confirmed, setting the glass flute away as well. "Perhaps we can… gather you something more appealing?"

"I—I don't like alcohol. Don't give me that look." She huffed to Natsuki, and Shizuru. "I know being royal and not liking alcohol is weird. But still…" Seeing the devious expression setting onto the Archmeister's features, the Princess paled. "Hey now." She grumbled. "Get whatever is in your head out!"

"This is my tenth glass." Natsuki murmured, downing the dregs of her champagne flute. She lifted it to the air, a servant replacing it handily. She started to sip that as well, glancing at Mashiro from the weight of her stare. "It is… exceedingly difficult to get drunk, for me."

"It is." Shizuru confirmed, though shared a glance with Lady Hinagiku. The Zipangese noble smiled almost too wide, reeling it back as she addressed Natsuki.

"My, the battle pup can even outlast my dear Shizuru?"

"Your dear Archmeister gets drunk off a few glasses." The Gakuenchou scoffed, receiving a light hit from the brunette. "Who would've thought her one weakness was alcohol." She smiled almost too sweetly to the elder.

"Shizuru, weak to alcohol? When did this change?" The Zipangese noble asked with curiosity.

"It's not always like this?" Natsuki cocked a brow, both their gazes on the Archmeister. For as long as she had known Shizuru, she would get drunk so fast…

Actually, thinking about it, wasn't it a little too easy to get a new flute of champagne here? Natsuki suspiciously eyed Shizuru, halfway through her eleventh glass. She barely saw the flicker, but she watched as Shizuru's lip twitched.

Oh, that was it, wasn't it…? Narrowing her eyes, the Gakuenchou huffed. "Princess. With your Meister, and your corporation, we need information. Do we know of any Schwartz supporters? If so, how do we neutralize these key targets?"

She couldn't believe Shizuru had chosen this time to try and get her drunk. Still, she felt utterly nothing. Leveling her gaze to Mashiro again, Natsuki focused on her answer.

"Smith is…" Mashiro frowned, looking at the ground. "He's a pretentious wine taster. He's bad at it, as well. Most have… completely shut him down from even owning their wines."

"A wine taster?" Natsuki's eyebrow cocked. Was Mashiro serious about this? She studied her, and found that the royal indeed was. "So if he's a wine taster then…" Cupping her jaw, Natsuki stared down at the table. "Umh… pretend we're a… wine company…?" She hazarded a guess, scoffing at the very idea.

"It's so stupid, it might just work."

Wait, what? She eyed Mashiro, the younger woman speaking with one of her servants.

"Go fetch some wine. Any will do. Preferably get back in twenty minutes."

"Twenty?!"

Natsuki watched in mild disbelief, a few servants running off. She wasn't about to say so, but she thought that the plan was utterly idiotic. Shizuru must have thought so as well, the Archmeister covering her lips.

Shizuru had noticed the personality change; Noting that it was her original Natsuki this time. Only the proper Gakuenchou could think up an idea so… silly, and somehow let it be believed.

Why was this even a thing, Natsuki wondered? Clasping her hands to her face, she grumbled. "... Shouldn't we introduce some spies to Schwartz? As… haphazard that he is, I can't see him falling for wine."

"Believe me, we know." The royal muttered over, Natsuki blinking in response.

"So… it's to be a joke?" Natsuki caught on, humming lowly to herself. That would no doubt insult Smith, yes? Which would be a plus…

Why had she only just got this information though? Surely such a topic would be an international craze? Given that the media went ballistic if, Founder forbid, she stuttered in an interview?

"Think, Gakuenchou." The Princess rolled her eyes. Getting a pointed look from Natsuki, she snickered. "Create a fake wine company and get Schwartz around that finger of yours."

"That… would be unbelievably amusing." Natsuki finally smiled softly, chuckling to herself. "Then we will do that." The Gakuenchou confirmed, relaxing in her chair. She straightened the aiguillette along her right shoulder, nodding to Mashiro.

"Just like that, all planned and set?" Hinagiku murmured, making the group jump. They had forgotten the noble was even there. Her hands were clasped before her, and she leaned over Shizuru slightly. "... No cause of action in case of… miscalculations?"

"How can we miscalculate a fake winery with bad wine?" Natsuki's eyes faintly narrowed, and Shizuru slipped another glass into her hands. The Gakuenchou drank solely on instinct now, though did at least seem to enjoy it.

"Do not mind Natsuki; She may seem rude, but is only confused." Shizuru gently kissed the younger woman cheek, hearing her grumble.

"How am I being rude?" The younger Otome grumbled, leaning into Shizuru. "I'm just asking a question." Pushing gently from the Archmeister. "Who in our ranks is best for this… winery? And please, don't say Anh." She groaned to Shizuru. They needed someone who was unknown within their ranks.

As impossible as that sounded.

"We will have to see." Shizuru leaned back into her own chair, trading a smirk with her nanny. Natsuki eyed both of them, finishing her… What was this, her fourteenth glass of champagne?

"I'm starting to think this might be non-alcoholic." Natsuki murmured softly, staring hard at the glass in her hand.

"Hmm? Is it?" Shizuru hummed, tilting her head. She regarded Natsuki silently, watching the younger woman Column drink. What would her reaction be if Shizuru told her she was currently experimenting on her? The drinks weren't particularly strong, but many people were at least drunk…

Natsuki didn't even seem tipsy!

"Then, you would care for another?" Shizuru gestured, and the empty glass was replaced.

Natsuki stared, wetting her lips. "At this point, I doubt I have much choice, somehow." The younger woman shrugged and took a sip. "Just who could we use for this wine trickery?" She asked, quirking a brow to her mother.

No, Saeko wouldn't work… Lady Hinagiku? Perhaps, but would she even agree?

But did wine suit Zipang? She had never even set foot in the country. Having a basic knowledge of the Locked Country was pretty impossible in that aspect.

She would have to ask Mai. Asking Hinagiku seemed… rude. But then again, it was apparently rude to ask questions these days. Shaking her head, Natsuki stiffened suddenly. "Why do I get the impression Zhang is the most reliable for this…?" She muttered under her breath.

The champagne abruptly felt necessary.

"Juliet Nao Zhang? My, that is quite the idea. Could this be her first mission?" Shizuru suggested, stifling a smile when Natsuki whirled on her.

"This?! Something so easy? I had to…" The Gakuenchou paused, turning faintly in her chair so as not to yell. "I had to kill my uncle for my first mission. There is no way Zhang is getting off so easily like this." It was clear resentment lay within Natsuki's tone, but there was something else as well.

"Because the Schwartz are a walk down the garden, Gakuenchou." The Princess eyed her, taking a hesitant sip of her drink. Regretting it instantly, she pushed it aside again. "... We have no general pinpoint on their location. But you guys think they're in Altai?"

Hell if she knew. Natsuki just simply couldn't get it into her head. Why Zhang of all people? Why were people taking this wine business seriously? "This needs more planning…" She cupped her jaw, leaning into the table. As much as she couldn't take this seriously, she didn't want casualties.

Shizuru smiled faintly, resting her hand against Natsuki's shoulder. "We will let Zhang be aware of this plan, and see what she says." The elder trailed her fingertips against the nape of Natsuki's neck, watching her suppress a shudder.

Damn her. The Gakuenchou downed her fifteenth glass, watching it be replaced again. "Either your servants are impeccable, or my mother hired a few as well." It may just be the latter, actually.

"No, no. I'm quite fine with Miyu and my gynoids." The countess piped, Natsuki slowly turning towards her.

Oh.

Of course. It was unlikely a servant would know advanced maths, robotics and computing, wasn't it? Who knew in this day and age though, considering it was rude to-

"Let's say the servants are playing along…" Saeko implied, causing Natsuki to solely focus on her.

"What? Play along with what?"

"Nothing." The countess cooed, forcing Natsuki to wince.

"Please stop it, mother." Downing the glass this time, Natsuki mumbled. "...Can we please detail this further another day…?"

"Of course." Shizuru smiled, watching her closely even still. The Gakuenchou narrowed her eyes, apparently still not affected by the multitude of glasses.

"I'm watching you." The younger woman Column mindlessly pointed at her. Shuffling in her seat, she delicately stretched her uninjured leg. "Princess. What day would be most suitable for you?"

"For further discussion?" Mashiro looked up to Aoi, watching her maid for a moment. "I suppose sometime this week. Just make sure you've got all the details worked out ahead of time. In the meanwhile, Windbloom will do its best to protect Garderobe. We do not want another incident."

They had gotten this far without work. Resisting the urge to lash out, the Gakuenchou itched her cheek in self distraction. "We will. I will contact you when I have the information together." Natsuki reported, smoothing her oddity of a uniform out.

"Natsuki, don't wrinkle your regalia." Saeko scolded softly, receiving a sharp glare. "My, so grumpy…"

"Mother." Natsuki warned her, attention back on the Princess. Mashiro flicked her gaze between the two, giving a soft chuckle to herself.

"Sometimes, I forget our Gakuenchou is a Countess." Mashiro admitted, standing once she was sure no cats were in her way. "See to it that we find a solution to this… feline infestation, as well." With her palm against the chair, she paused. "Oh, and… there was a girl… Arika? Tell her to stop speaking so loudly." She huffed, gathering her servants and Aoi.

"I will alert Arika to be more quiet." Natsuki seemed amused, though another servant gave her one last glass. Sixteen? If they kept coming, who knows when she would even begin to acquire even the smallest of buzzes.

Or more preferably, a visit to the bathroom.

"Ah…" Mashiro paused again. "...The tunnel still needs excavating." She reminded, jogging the Gakuenchou's memory. "My staff took a look; whatever's down there is centuries old."

"Oh, yes… We had planned for an excavation months ago." When she still needed to use her cane after that wheelchair. Natsuki lifted a hand, pinching her brow. "The plans got buried once everything started happening. Thank you for the reminder."

What had it been about, again? Something about a tunnel, obviously. All Natsuki could remember was something about Yohko showing maps. The maps had definitely shown the indication that something was down there. But… What precisely?

"It would be important to excavate soon. Send word when it begins." Mashiro looked to Aoi once more, nodding to her maid. "And, tell me when this cat problem dissipates?"

"At this point, I doubt it'll happen." Natsuki shook her head.

"Natsuki." Shizuru sounded, tearing the younger woman's attention from the royal.

Shizuru was standing, but leaning against Lady Hinagiku. The noble guided her over towards Natsuki, the two halting once near. "Thank you, Hikari…" Shizuru smiled softly at the noblewoman.

"My… Hikari? That is a name I haven't heard for a while."

Hikari?

Natsuki tilted her head, searching for her cane for a moment. Had her mother taken it? If so, why? "Lady Hinagiku." The Gakuenchou smiled at the older woman, slipping a palm atop of Shizuru's good hip.

"Battle pup." The noble smiled sweetly, causing Natsuki to flush again.

"Please, stop calling me that." Natsuki chuckled nervously. Looking around quickly for her mother, she shook her head. Nowhere in sight. Of course. "What do you need?"

"Hm, I wonder?" Hinagiku lifted a hand to her mouth, fingertips brushing her lips. Natsuki watched the motion, finding it far too familiar. She shifted her weight, leaning closer to Shizuru.

"Oh, perhaps… When shall the wedding be?"

"W-what?" Natsuki scolded herself inwardly for stammering, clearing her throat. Tips of her ears bright red, she opened her mouth to speak. "That's not—"

"I've been trying as well." Saeko manifested at her side with a cattish grin.

"Mother!" Natsuki hissed, a soft, silent laugh escaping the Archmeister. Shooting her gaze towards the smiling elder, Natsuki opened her mouth. Feeling something inside click, she closed her mouth. Three vs one?! "Shizuru!"

"Oh, oh? What is it, Natsuki?" Shizuru smiled deviously, leaning into Hinagiku. The viridian-haired woman had entwined their arms, yet still supported Shizuru.

Saeko needled Natsuki's side, passing her to stand by Hinagiku. "Last I heard, they talked about it!" She stage-whispered, the Zipangese noble covering her mouth as if in shock.

Natsuki furrowed her brows, idly fixing her Aiguillette. "We…" She switched her gaze to Shizuru, clearing her throat. "We aren't even engaged… yet."

"She said yet!" Saeko nearly squealed, Natsuki regretting her words instantly.

"Shizuru, help!" She half whispered, half squeaked. Latching a hand to Shizuru's wrist, Natsuki pried her closer. The elder tilted her head in ponderment, slipping from Hinagiku.

"They're going, they're going!" Saeko sounded.

"That is what I imagine will happen when my mother meets yours. Or, worse, when I meet her." Natsuki led Shizuru away towards the long buffet table. Why had they… catered this little event? Well, at least it distracted the staff…

She took up another champagne flute, draining it without effort.

"That makes seventeen, my Natsuki." Shizuru winked at her, thoroughly amused.

"What are you, my personal spy?" Natsuki inquired, sitting the glass down onto the table as they continued. "I know what you're up to." Since that ridiculous conversation, everyone was trying to get her drunk! But at least she… liked the drink? "The only reason I'm partaking in this little game of yours is because I like the taste."

"So threatening."

"If it had been anything but this, I would have stopped with one." Natsuki pressed again, eyeing the bubbly alcohol in the next glass. "It's… really good."

Shizuru's brows perked slightly, but the elder reined in her expression. Was Natsuki finally showing signs of being tipsy? "It is; At least, it was the last time I partook of it. I am afraid I have not been able to sample it just yet today."

"Probably because you're too much of a lightweight?" Natsuki suggested, getting a light slap to the shoulder. "Lightweight."

Was that fair though? Shizuru had been out of her mind keeping the academy running. Let alone restructuring the whole foundation of the Otome. Biting her lip, Natsuki pondered.

"Ah, Natsuki worries too much." Shizuru smiled, offering up another glass. Natsuki noticed the one in her grasp was now empty, staring dumbfounded.

"What did you do with my champagne…?"

The Gakuenchou was definitely getting drunk… "Ara? She drank it."

"No, no… I could've swore that…" Continuing to blankly gaze at the flute glass, she was tugged. "Eh—oh. Sorry." She grumbled, now holding an empty glass with a full flute. Awkwardly she stood, Shizuru leaning into her for support. "Where exactly are we going?"

"We are moving the event inside, Natsuki." Shizuru smiled, guiding the slightly tipsy younger woman. "So Mai can join us."

"Mai's going to-?" Natsuki blinked, helping support the Archmeister. So that the Zipang could see her drunk…?

"Curse you, Viola." She muttered under her breath. "Having one of you against me is hard enough. Let alone both of you." Almost forgetting to drink this last glass, Natsuki groaned. "Founder, pray for me."

"I will be sure to let the Founder know." Shizuru smiled, too amused for Natsuki's taste.

Where was Lady Hinagiku, and her mother for that matter? She doubted they were helping… but what if they were? Given their personalities, Natsuki wouldn't be surprised in the least. Lady Hinagiku certainly seemed like she would be a piece of work. But hadn't that been predicted? She was Shizuru's nanny, after all.

But, surely Lady Hinagiku had more manners than that? Then again… she still had been Shizuru's nanny. Natsuki resigned herself quietly to her fate, watching as people moved the tables and buffet into the building. Sipping at her drink, she watched as the students began to emerge.

Being huddled into the cafeteria, they moved towards the wall. Here they were able to avoid the chaos of tables and people alike. Many of the students appeared baffled as to what was happening, a muttering transpiring.

"Somehow this reminds me of my college years." Saeko muttered, having appeared out of nowhere by the Gakuenchou's side.

"M-mother?!" Natsuki yapped, practically flying out of her skin. Shooting her gaze to her glass, she opened her mouth. "What did I tell you about doing that?!" Having eyes burn into her, she flushed, pushing into Shizuru slightly.

"She jumps, and checks her glass first to see if she's spilled! How cute is that?" Saeko smirked, waving off Natsuki's concern. "Miyu wants to get a picture of you."

"W-what? Why?" Immediately off put, the Gakuenchou glanced around for the gynoid. Where was she?

"I'm sorry, but she insists." Miyu droned from behind her, causing Natsuki to twitch again. Gritting her teeth, she slowly glanced over her shoulder, a stoic Miyu staring at her blankly.

"It will not be too bad, surely?" Shizuru urged, crimson locking onto emerald.

"Don't lie and say Miyu wants to do it when it's really you who wants to!" Natsuki barked at her mother, draining her glass. She handed it off to Saeko, adjusting her regalia to not appear unkempt. "Wait, what is this photo for—"

Once Miyu raised the camera, Natsuki silenced and took on a stoic pose. Saeko snickered softly, moving out of the frame.

"Smile, Natsuki!" Another gynoid appeared out of thin air. Clinging to her arm, the short gynoid barely reached Natsuki's chest.

"W-what?" Oh, it was this one again. She hadn't seen her for a while. "M-12?" Natsuki raised her up a bit, finding the gynoid adorable again.

"Get out of the photo." Miyu droned, the smaller gynoid seeming offended.

"-So mean!"

"It can't be helped." The Gakuenchou snickered, the shorter version of Miyu practically hanging on her. They were remarkably light, Natsuki noticed suddenly, peering down to M-12.

Was it simply because M12 was smaller than most of the others?

"Remember to blame yourself when you get into trouble." The forever unamused Miyu stated. Taking a few photos of different angles, she glanced over to Saeko, frowning.

"Hiyooo." The Ariesian waved, drawling. It forced Miyu's furrowed brows to deepen, the gynoid frozen.

"Photos?" A voice came from behind Miyu, the crimson-eyed woman glancing over her shoulder.

"It's Mai!" M-12 pointed with a free hand, the other coiled around Natsuki's arm. The Gakuenchou studied her still, lifting the gynoid up and down.

"She's so light…"

"Or, you're very strong." Saeko pointed out, seeming thoroughly amused. She glanced at Mai, mouthing something. "She's had a bit of champagne."

Absorbing this information, Mai swung her arms around Miyu, confusing the tall gynoid. "Miyu, you aren't going to take a photo of everyone?" She asked, her mouth close to her ear. Characteristically a reaction wasn't given, but Mai didn't falter. Instead the Zipangese Princess regarded Shizuru, the elder remaining quiet by Natsuki's side. "Anything to distract these kids." She chuckled quietly, almost pleading with the Gakuenchou. "They won't stop staring at me."

Opening her mouth, Natsuki's arm remained idle in the air. M-12 hung loosely, and she grumbled in defeat. "Fine… fine."

"Natsuki loves having her photo taken." Shizuru whispered, not so quietly. M-12 seemed completely enamored with the idea, eyes wide with excitement.

"If you two don't grace me with grandbabies, I suppose M-12 is a good substitute." Saeko teased, entering the frame long enough to pinch Natsuki's cheek.

"How would we even do that?" Natsuki wondered aloud, cocking a brow.

"Never underestimate science, Natsuki. How many times have I had to remind you of this?"

"Urgh… please stop." Natsuki muttered, Saeko pushing into her side, the Archmeister on her other. The two women wrapped their arms around her, and she flushed deeply. "Stop it!"

"Oh… oh." Mai snickered, her arms around Miyu's shoulders still. She watched from over the gynoid's shoulder, grinning. "Don't be like that, Kruski—"

"Not you too!"

"She hates that." Shizuru covered her mouth with a free hand. "Now, now, Natsuki… Smile, hm?" The older woman winked to Natsuki, the Gakuenchou blushing. Natsuki gave more of a predatory snarl than a smile, prompting Miyu to snap the photo anyway. "That is going on the wall." The gynoid droned.

Much to Natsuki's torment, their little activity had sparked attention. Students were hesitatingly hanging around, and were gradually edging towards Miyu and Mai. The students bickered amongst one another, many of the younger students unsure where to look. Did they stare at the people in the photo, the gynoid, or the heavily burned Princess?

"...The field of view for the camera isn't—" The gynoid was ignored, the students shuffling towards the group. "..." She stared, a brow faintly twitching. "Saeko—"

"Then get the future family." Saeko winked, exiting the frame to be by Miyu's side. Natsuki quirked a brow, holding up M-12 higher.

"Future family—Mother!" The Gakuenchou blushed, though did absolutely nothing to dispute it. M-12 even swung her legs, prompting more amusement from Natsuki. That reminded her; She and Shizuru needed to have a proper discussion about marriage later…

But everything was so—derailing the thought, Natsuki stiffened. Nao stepped in front of her, the redhead beside Chie. Staring harshly at the Altain, Natsuki didn't even realise she was doing such a thing.

"Stare any harder and the camera will freeze over, Kruger." She muttered under her breath, her underling students clambering onto her. "Oi—hey, what are you doing?" Nao was surrounded by the younger girls, the redhead being clung onto.

"Hah!" Natsuki smirked, feeling something tug the sleeve of her free arm. "Hm?" Glancing to her side, she was surprised to find Erstin. "Oh, hello Erstin. Are you alright?"

"E-excuse me." The blonde seemed shy, still holding onto her sleeve. She pointed to M-12, and Natsuki grinned softly.

"Okay, come on." The elder chuckled, lowering her arm for Erstin to cling on. Natsuki lifted the girl easily, M-12 happy to have a playmate.

"I have to admit, this feels like a Zipangese animation." Saeko commented, receiving a snort from Mai. The Princess had joined the ever growing group, fitting between Hinagiku and Saeko.

The noble appeared mesmerized with the fellow easterner. The royal caught her staring, and Mai arched her brow. The notion settled before her lips tugged; smiling at the older woman. "I have heard about you, Lady Hinagiku."

"My, I hope I have exceeded expectations." The elder Zipangese woman smiled back, covering her mouth as she softly chuckled.

"Shizuru, should I be this strong?" Natsuki questioned aloud, lifting both M-12 and Erstin higher. "You weigh nothing!"

Shizuru fought hard and valiantly to stifle her laughter, managing to overcome it. "Natsuki is so strong!" She teased, enjoying the behavior greatly. It was refreshing to see Natsuki so carefree for once. At last the alcohol was running through the Gakuenchou's system too. It supplied her with enough to enjoy the moment, but not make her mindless.

Miyu was snapping photos as well as recording a video, making sure to capture everyone. Natsuki happily grinned, lowering both M-12 and Erstin after a moment. "Well, that was cute." The Gakuenchou chuckled, patting the blonde girl's shoulder.

"You know, I remembered back to a battle Haruka and I had. You were one of the commentators."

"O-oh. You remember that?" Erstin stuttered. "All I remember is Meister Armitage… blocking your cannon?"

"I remembered you rooting for me." Natsuki chuckled softly, letting her hand fall from the girl's shoulder. Shizuru watched her, pleased to find the Gakuenchou slightly tipsy still. A few more glasses, and-

A solemn alarm sounded out, startling them all. "Gakuenchou, Archmeister, please come down as soon as you can!"

Yohko? The Archmeister frowned, staring off into the direction of the alarm. All thought forgotten, she urged Natsuki to follow her quickly. "We must go."

Was this something to do with the strange firewalls?

"Now what?" Natsuki grumbled, letting Erstin down gently. She apologetically gave the student a glance, heading towards Shizuru. "You don't think it's an emergency, Shizuru?" She hushed, supporting the elder's side.

"This is not an alarm I have heard before." Shizuru murmured back, leading down towards Yohko. Whatever the matter was, it must not be so dire.

But what was this alarm? It was low; almost dull in fact. Shizuru couldn't remember having heard it before. She most certainly would've memorized it too. All Otome underwent the training of different alarms.

"-Maybe it's an alarm from the Founder System?" Natsuki murmured out loud, pondering. Reaching the elevator to the lab facility, they paused. A bleep from the lift droned, and the doors opened. Out came—nobody?

Had Yohko sent the lift up ready?

"It must be urgent." Natsuki mused again, stepping in with Shizuru. She helped brace the elder's side still, watching her for a moment. "How's the pain?"

Shizuru cocked a brow, eyeing her. It seemed her surveying was far too public; The younger woman frowning. "What? Did I say something weird?"

"No, of course not…" Why did Shizuru find this so baffling? Pushing the thought aside, she leant into the Gakuenchou. "Your breath smells of champagne." She teased; amused. Momentarily she rested her head on Natsuki's shoulder, then sighed.

"You made me drink so much." Natsuki scoffed, a little offended. She grumbled softly to herself, glancing at Shizuru.

"Oh? I have no idea what Natsuki means by that…"

"Don't go pretending you don't know anything." Natsuki rolled her eyes. Regarding the elder suspiciously, she mumbled. Shizuru curled her arms around her, luring her into the hold. "You sure you aren't the drunk one, Shizuru?"

"Do not be so mean." The brunette muffled into her throat. The elevator hummed around them, the cramped area quiet. At least in this facility there was a peaceful silence.

Once the lift reached its designated floor, the doors opened. Natsuki eased out of the embrace somewhat, helping Shizuru from the elevator. Now, where was-?

"What took you two so long?!" Yohko faced the monitors, hands in her pockets as though she wasn't panicking. The scientist was practically twitching where she stood. With a foot bobbing, she shot her gaze to the two Columns. "Here! Come over here!" She insisted, removing her hands from her pockets, and resting them atop the computer keyboard.

"What, what is it?" Natsuki seemed rather alarmed now, instead of amused. The Gakuenchou helped Shizuru to Yohko's side, the two of them gazing at the monitor. What had the older woman so strung up?

With an assortment of pop-ups across the screen, they looked more alike to malware. They flashed out their existence to them, blaring messages. Completely scripted in a programming language, Yohko only seemed to understand them.

"These have been setting off the mainframe for the past several hours. For whatever reason it was reprogramming the framewo—"

"Ari, Yohko. Let's speak the international language here." Natsuki groaned. "Shizuru and I aren't quantum scientists."

The elder woman gave an incredulously tired glance to the Gakuenchou. "If you had continued on with your studies…" She trailed off, sighing before she started up again. "A framework is what makes an application. Without it, it's game over."

"...Oh." Natsuki gazed back to the monitor, trying to make sense of the images. "How can we stop it?" She asked, quirking a brow.

Natsuki may have had just a bit too much champagne to truly deal with this… Worried, Shizuru moved closer to her lover's side and took a hold of her wrist. "Where are these coming from?"

"That's the thing." The doctor muttered, leaning over the keyboard. "They're coming from hard-coded programming; the machine language, no less—"

"-Yohko."

"How isn't that understandable?!" Yohko huffed. "It's coming from the Founder System!"

"Why didn't you say that?!"

Sighing, Shizuru tugged at the younger Otome. "Natsuki, calm down."

"Well… should we go down there? See if she's alright?" Natsuki cleared her throat, catching Yohko's eyes. The doctor stared at her, seemingly realizing something.

"Viola, you've gotten her drunk?"

"Tipsy is the more accurate word, and barely that even."

The elder of the lab stared unbelievingly. Forcing herself out of it, she shook her head. "No. If this is a virus, it's unquestionable what she may do." Who was to say she was even functional right now? Regarding the screen again, Yohko frowned.

It was as if the messages mocked her in their scripted code. But why would a virus be hard-coded into the Founder System? Had one of the original lab teams created backdoors in frustration? Had she stumbled across an ancient attempt to hack the Founder?

Natsuki gazed at the screen, wondering if she could possibly figure this out. Gently leaning Shizuru against a chair, she approached Yohko's side. Raising a hand, she hovered it over the keys with a ghost of an idea.

"Natsuki Kruger! Don't you dare touch my buttons!"

Flying out of her skin, Natsuki literally flew backwards, cursing. "W-what?!" She stared at the keyboard wide-eyed, her gaze then shooting to the monitor.

The three of them blankly stared at the screen. Neither were able to judge what was happening.

"Ctrl-Alt-Delete me, and we'll have another thing coming!"

"W-well, why would I try that first?!" Natsuki yelled back, completely unhinged for a moment. "Yohko, what the hell is this?" She growled, ears red at having been startled. She swung an arm to the screen behind her. Upon it was a virtual Fumi.

Uncharacteristically so, the pink-haired founder narrowed her eyes at the notion.

"Please tell me we have some sanity left here? I was programmed into the System by Fumi herself—"

"What?" Natsuki gaped at the screen, completely confused. With a glance to Shizuru, it was clear the elder felt the same. Exactly what were they supposed to do about this?

"So… let me get this straight…" Natsuki started, glancing over to Yohko. The scientist was dumbfoundedly staring at the virtual Fumi. With her hands in her pockets, she blinked, catching the Meister's eye. "The messages… or whatever they were, activated this… AI?"

"Excuse me, I have a name!"

"U-uh, of course you do." Natsuki stammered, almost taking to hiding behind Shizuru. The elder stared at the screen, brows furrowed slightly.

"Why the activation now, after all this time?" Shizuru asked politely, tilting her head.

The AI—or whatever it was, was genuinely surprised by such a question. Fumi appeared to relax, and fell more into character like her creator. The imagery behind her was the same scene from the Founder's portrait. As she cupped her hands before her, anyone would think she was the real deal.

"Exactly three hundred years ago, the Migration Era ended. It was then that the Twelve Nation War was sparked. The organization, Schwartz insisted they could 'unlock' a hidden power from the Wind Weavers. Instead they slaughtered the Wind family, and enslaved nations with poor technology."

Natsuki stared, brows furrowing together. "What...?" Was that true? The information for the real cause had often been... Muddled. "Weavers?" That title again... From the Harmonium incident? Still, what were they, and what could be... Unlocked?

Why was it always Schwartz? They were always cropping up within history. If anything, Natsuki wouldn't be surprised if they had originated on Earth. Though wouldn't this make them absolutely ancient?

"The Weavers were—or are, the true descendants of Kazahana Mashiro, the first Queen of Windbloom."

"The Weavers are the descendants of...?" Natsuki lifted her hand, cupping her chin to think. The Harmonium incident had been caused by the Weavers, so...? That would be incredibly devastating if it got out.

The Wind family had already suffered far too much as it was. They had never recovered since the King and Queen's death during the Schwartz…

"The Schwartz still exist and are thriving." Shizuru stated, the virtual Fumi seemed horrified from this information.

"They've... Just attacked us, recently." Natsuki added, hand at her thigh to rub.

Could Schwartz be testing the waters? Did they have a Weaver within their ranks they didn't know about? It was possible, considering royals tended to have little secrets sometimes. For Natsuki, it turned out overthinking was a positive for once. She edged towards Shizuru, and glanced over to Yohko. "... What makes Weavers so important? Are they… Super Otome?"

Yohko glanced at Shizuru, unsure if she should divulge Natsuki fully. The Gakuenchou furrowed her brows, gaze switching back to the screen. "If you all keep up this secret keeping, we may be overrun."

"The Gakuenchou doesn't know about the Weavers?"

"She did, but…" The scientist piped up at last, finally feeling the need to do so. The virtual Fumi regarded her silently, and Yohko felt at odds. Communication had always been via either programming or messaging. To speak with the Founder System like this, it was…

Yohko couldn't even describe it.

"We only have Sifr Fran for a recent Weaver, and she died almost twenty years ago." She finished, Fumi appearing further concerned with this.

Had they supposed to know more about this subject?

"I'm so confused." Natsuki sighed, covering her face. Weavers, those damned cats and now... Groaning against her palms, she felt Shizuru adjust her aiguillette.

"Calm down, Natsuki." The elder smiled softly to her, brushing off her hanging jacket.

"I can only cope with so much information at a time." She huffed, allowing the clothing and cloak to be taken from her.

"Kazahana Mashiro was a HiME. Naturally when a HiME has an offspring, there's a chance they will be a Weaver. No matter the sex, this always seems to be the case. Weavers can control many of the ancient weapons and machinery of Earth. One such item is the Pure White Diamond. My feeds from the System suggests that the GEM was lost, however?"

"...yes. I'm also a HiME." Natsuki murmured, easing the tail of her dress shirt from her trousers. She lifted one side up to show the red mark on her hip. "Or... Oto-HiME."

"A CHILDless HiME."

With it stated so plainly, Natsuki couldn't help but feel baffled. Why did she feel… remorse? She watched Shizuru from the corner of her eye. Shizuru's mark—it was forming. Natsuki was more than sure that the elder was also HiME. But… what if she wasn't?

"I was programmed to activate at this time due to the Weavers and HiME. The Schwartz cannot be allowed to find the Pure White Diamond or Harmonium. If these are corrupted, then it's truly the end for Earl."

The Harmonium, there it was again. Natsuki lowered her shirt, brows drawing tight. "Then... Do we need to destroy it?" Alternatively, they could harvest it for themselves... If they used Mashiro. Natsuki snapped from her thoughts, shaking her head. Frost formed at her fingertips, and she pressed them into her temples for a distraction.

What was she thinking? Was she insane? If anything was corrupted, it was her-

"Natsuki." The Archmeister murmured, capturing her attention. The elder Meister already knew what was wrong. She lured the younger woman closer, leaning into Natsuki's side. "You're overthinking again." With the Gakuenchou's clothing hung around her free arm, her other dug into Natsuki.

"I know, but I can't exactly help it."

"The Founder had hoped to bury the Harmonium away forever. Such a weapon brings nothing but death and destruction."

"We have an excavation planned..." Lowering her hands, Natsuki gazed back at the screen. "Where was it buried away?"

The virtual Fumi paused, almost as if hesitant. She was unsure of this Gakuenchou. Not suspicious exactly, but curious as to why the Meister knew so little. It was difficult, as she was still feeding off the data from the Founder System.

As more of this information downloaded, she replied at last. Her chosen words echoed throughout the lab, stilling the three women.

"Under Windbloom Castle."
