Hey! This is the first of two parts to my New Years chapters. Hope you enjoy.

Disclaimer: I don't own Divergent.

Today is New Year's Eve, and Tris finds herself in an unfamiliar place; Uriah's apartment. She's never been over here before, but she rather likes the homey feel of the place. What it lacks in space, it makes up in character.

She was not about to turn down Uriah's invitation to hang, she needs all the friends she can get, and she likes him. He's friendly, charming, and very funny. He and Marlene are also very smitten with one another, which Tris finds very sweet. When she met him, Uriah was a total player, flirting with her relentlessly- so she's glad he's found his match.

Upon arriving, Tris found out there was an ulterior motive to Uriah inviting her over. Yes, he did want to spend time with her, but he also wants her to help him navigate Hana's strictness and sneak him out for Zeke's New Year's party tonight. Tris agreed, and they made a plan that also involved them picking up Marlene from The Pit on their way there. Hopefully it goes off without a hitch.

Tris also finds herself excited to see Tobias. After Christmas, they haven't had the opportunity to spend any more time together in person. Tobias was busy with plans for his gallery, and Natalie was getting ready to release her new line and needed Tris's assistance with things… and that included modeling. She reluctantly complied.

These past few days she's been so close to telling her mom about college, but decision letters come out soon so she decided once she knows where she's been accepted she'll have a conversation with Natalie about it. Though she already has an inkling that she's going to postpone that conversation too. Whatever, she won't think about it right now.

"Okay, I know everyone says that Frozen is better than Frozen 2, but I honestly have to disagree," Uriah says through a mouthful of popcorn.

"Mmm," Tris responds. She honestly hasn't been paying much attention to the film, her mind has been mainly focused on seeing Tobias again. She doesn't know exactly what they are- they just kissed a few times on Christmas. It doesn't make them official, and she keeps telling herself that, no matter how much she wants it to be true. Besides, it's not exactly practical, is it?

No matter where she ends up going to college, it won't be in the city, meanwhile Tobias is opening a gallery here. She should stop obsessing over it, and just enjoy their time together. Yeah, that's what she'll do.

The front door of the apartment opens, and Hana strolls in, her face lighting up when she sees Tris. "Tris! How lovely to see you again, dear."

She brings the groceries she's carrying into the kitchen and begins unloading them. "Hey, Hana. I'm so glad that Uri invited me over to hangout, you have a lovely home by the way."

"Thank you so much for saying that."

"Do you need any help with the groceries?" Tris offers.

Hana waves a hand, "Don't you worry about that, dear. Keep enjoying your movie."

Uriah nudges Tris and gives her an imploring look. Tris understands that now is the time to act. "Hey Hana," she pipes up.

"Mmm?" Hana responds as she places items in the fridge.

"My mom is having this New Year's charity gala thing… I was wondering if you might allow Uriah to accompany me?"

Hana turns to face them with narrowed eyes, "A New Year's charity gala, huh?"

"Yes ma'am."

"Please, please, can I go mom? It's New Year's Eve and it's so depressing in here."

"I thought we agreed you could invite Marlene over and have a nice night in."

"She… is going to this thing too! All of our friends are, including Zeke and Tobias!"

Hana bites her lip, glancing between Tris and Uriah for a few moments. Tris feels guilty for lying to Hana like this, but poor Uriah, he really deserves to have some fun tonight. She knows that Hana is rightfully protective of her boys given what happened to their father, but come on, it's New Years Eve.

"My brother Caleb has a suit that he can borrow and everything," Tris adds on.

"Mmm… okay…" Hana nods, and Uriah makes a 'woop!' sound. "How late will this event go?"

"Maybe till like, 11:30ish?" Tris says.

"And… we were talking about going to watch the ball drop at Zeke's after… so I guess it would make sense for me to sleep over there, huh?"

"I suppose that would be the safer option," Hana muses, though she still seems a bit worried, "Text me every half an hour with updates, Uriah Pedrad."

Uriah salutes to his mother, "Will do. Now come on, Tris. Let's get over to your place so we can find a suit for me."

Tris and Uriah went over to Tris's place, not to get a suit for Uriah, obviously, but instead so Tris could change for the party. Uriah claimed he was fine in the clothes he was wearing, a solid colored t-shirt and jeans.

As soon as they entered the penthouse, he marveled over its size and decadence. "This is your kitchen?" He exclaimed, when Tris popped in to grab a snack.

"Yep," Tris answered.

"Where's the maid?" Uriah jokes.

As if on cue, Maria pops up, "Hello Miss Tris, who is this?"

"Hola Maria, this is Uriah. He's a friend."

Maria greets Uriah and offers to take his coat, which he allows with wide eyes. When she's gone, he turns to Tris, "I was just kidding about the maid thing! How many do you have?"

"Just the one. She lives with us permanently, she's practically family."

"Yeah, I'll bet. Jesus Christ, Tris."

Tris isn't sure how to respond to the comments about her wealth. She's never really thought of it as hers, anyway, more her mother's. But she knows she benefits from it a lot, which is why she tries as much as she can to give back. Speaking of, Tobias notified her via text that he's already gotten to sell a lot of her jewelry, and donated the cash to the places they decided on. That's something.

"This is your bedroom?" Uriah questions again, once Tris shows him inside. Tris doesn't answer, because clearly it is her bedroom.

Uriah plops down on her bed and picks up a novel strewn across it, flipping through the pages as Tris enters her closet, trying to find something to wear. "So, rumor has it that Natalie Prior is your mother," Uriah states.

"Uh… where did you hear that?" Tris asks nervously. She was hoping to keep that from Uriah, especially since her mother isn't home this evening. Though, what's the point? He's seen where she lives now, clearly he's aware that she's very well off. Still, it's not something she really likes to advertise.

"Zeke."

Great. Tobias must have told him. She can't fault him, it's not like she told him not to, but still, she thought he would understand given that he kept his own wealth a secret from Zeke for two fucking years. Whatever, it was bound to come out eventually. "Yeah, she is," Tris admits as she changes.

"Tris! Why didn't you say anything?"

Tris shrugs, even though Uriah can't see her. "I dunno, it's not something I really talk about. There are more interesting things, I feel like."

"Your mom is like… an icon and inspiration to so many girls. I love her documentary, by the way!"

"I'll pass the message on."

"Is she here?"

"No, she's a busy woman."

"I see… think you could get me an autograph?"

"Um…"

He barks a laugh, "I'm joking, Tris. But I'll have you know, if I ever get to meet your mom, I will fangirl. Immensely."

"Noted," Tris steps out from her closet in her planned dress, "How do I look?"

Uriah instantly makes a face and shakes his head, "Nuh-uh, that color… is all wrong for you."

Tris's mouth falls, "Excuse me?"

"Tris, trust me, I'm an expert on this stuff."

"I like royal blue!"

"It washes you out."

"Fine," She huffs, marching back into the closet and ripping the dress off.

It takes four outfit changes until Uriah finally gives his approval. Tris isn't sure why she cares about his opinion so much, her mother is a world renowned fashion designer and she has dressed herself for years… but still, Uriah is a guy, and she's going to be seeing Tobias tonight. A prospect which makes her feel warm and fuzzy inside when she thinks about all of the kisses they've shared. She's hoping for another one tonight, when the clock strikes twelve.

"Perfect!" Uriah claps his hands and makes Tris do a spin for him. The dress he decided on is a skin tight black corset band number. The skirt has lace that wraps around the thick material, making it look far more suggestive than it already is, and Tris keeps pulling up at the straps as she feels like they're sliding down.

She forgets where she got this dress from, but she knows if Natalie could see her going out like this she would say that she looks like she belongs at a brothel. Even more so when Uriah skips into her closet to look for shoes and he shoves a pair of the highest black stiletto heels he can find into her hands.

"Okay, yeah, you look good Tris," he winks at her after she's put them on. She knows he doesn't mean it like that, though, he's with Marlene, and even though he doesn't know about the kisses between her and Tobias, Tris is sure he's aware enough of what's been happening between them. All of their friends are more observant than she gives them credit for. "One thing, though, take your hair out of that bun. Otherwise you look like a MILF at a PTA meeting."

Tris glares at him but does as he says, shaking her hair out. "Woooo!" He fans himself, "Tobias is going to be hard in front of everyone when he sees you like that."

Her cheeks redden, "Shut up, Uri."

He laughs, clapping Tris's shoulder, "Hey, mind if I take a leak before we get going?"

"Sure, it's just one door down from here on the left."

He thanks her and heads out of the room while Tris gathers her things for tonight.

"This is your bathroom?" She hears him exclaim from the room over.

Tris suppresses an eyeroll.

Alex drives the pair to pick up Marlene from the pit, and Uriah freaks over the fact that Tris has a driver for another five minutes. She gets it, he's not used to this life at all, but it still makes her feel a bit uncomfortable. Tris doesn't really know what she did to deserve any of these luxuries and amenities, what has her contribution to the world been? Nothing, and that's why it saddens her when she sees hard working women like Hana who deserve her money far much more than she does. When it's pointed out to her how crazy her life is, all she wants to do is ask whatever higher power is up there what she did to deserve all these great things… and how she can possibly ever pay all of it back to people who need it.

Marlene must have kept a change of clothes at work, because she exits The Pit looking like a million bucks in a deep purple romper. She gets over the fact that Tris has her own personal driver much quicker than Uriah does, and even begins making sweet conversation with Alex and asking him about his daughter and wife.

Uriah holds her close the entire ride over, pausing for kisses occasionally. When they're near their destination, Tris spies him texting his mother a bullshit update about what they're up to. Hopefully Uriah pulls this stunt off tonight, because she really doesn't want to deal with Hana hating her.

They arrive at the apartment complex, and the three of them thank Alex before heading in. On their way up the elevator, Tris thinks about her last time here. She got Tobias through a panic attack… she still feels like an idiot for never noticing his claustrophobia before, but glad that she could help him in any way. And then… when they got into the apartment… how he pressed her up against that wall and kissed her like there was no tomorrow. Jesus.

She had never felt as at peace as when she cuddled up next to him on that couch and fell into a deep, deep slumber. She hopes they can fall asleep like that again sometime, except without the interruption that they had faced on Christmas.

Still, Evelyn showing up ended up giving a possible happy ending for Tobias. Things between them definitely aren't solid… but at least he's giving her a chance, and she seems genuinely remorseful. The entire Christmas was chalk full of things that Tris didn't expect to happen, but she wouldn't change that day for anything.

She enters Tobias and Zeke's apartment with her head held high, now, a purpose in her step. "Tris! Holy shit! You look amazing!" She hears a female voice shriek, and is all of a sudden face to face with Christina who is giving her a massive hug.

Tris laughs, returning it, "Thanks, Chris. How was your Christmas?"

They spend the next few minutes catching up, Christina grumbling about how Will's mom still doesn't like her but she had fun with his family anyway. Eventually Will approaches too and greets Tris, and he has a very different story of how their Christmas went, insisting that his mom does like Christina and she's just being paranoid.

Tris represses a chuckle at the encounter. It's plainly obvious that Will and Christina are a match made in heaven, though. Where Will is soft spoken and logical, Christina is bubbly and passionate. They really even each other out.

Tris brings Uriah and Marlene up and introduces the two couples to each other, since she doesn't think they've met yet, and her eyes scan the apartment for Tobias. She doesn't find him, but she finds the next best thing, which is Zeke, so she excuses herself from the group.

"Tris! You look great!" Zeke says jovially, opening his arms for a friendly hug.

"Thanks Zeke, you too. Thanks for having me!"

"Yeah, of course. And I see you managed to smuggle Uriah out," he nods his head towards his brother.

"Mhm. I'm not sure if your mom bought the story we told… but here we are."

"Oh yeah. She texted me asking if I was really going to that charity thing. I just played along to be safe."

"Well, thank you," Tris tells him gratefully.

"Yeah, of course."

"Uh… where's Shauna at?" Tris asks, glancing around the apartment.

"Went for an ice refill, cuz we ran out…" He gives Tris a knowing smirk, "I'm pretty sure Tobias is in his room, though, if you wanna say hello."

She raises her eyebrows. How much could Tobias have told Zeke about Christmas? She doubts he'd share anything about Evelyn… but did he tell him that they kissed? Tris doesn't really mind if he did, but it'd be nice to know who knows. "Thanks, I'll go say hi," She says as nonchalantly as possible, shrugging her shoulders.

Zeke says goodbye to Tris, and Tris feels her heartbeat in her ears as she makes her way over to Tobias's door. She feels like a giddy school girl, wanting to jump up and down from excitement.

The door is already slightly ajar, so she nudges it open, ready to greet Tobias. Nothing could prepare her for the sight in front of her, though.

Tobias Eaton is sprawled back on his bed, and a tan, curvy woman is straddling his waist, their lips on one another's. Tris instantly recognizes this woman as Nita, the one they ran into at the bar. No…

This is the most humiliated that Tris has ever felt, and what would make it even more humiliating is if they were to catch her gawking at them.

Her heart cracks as she runs away from the door, and she can feel tears start to stream down her face. She doesn't know where they came from or why she let herself get so attached to this stupid boy. The whole reason she didn't kiss him that day at his gallery was because of all the uncertainty behind Nita, and then she threw all of her logic out the window and kissed him anyway on Christmas. He had seemed… so genuine, so vulnerable with her… but that doesn't mean he wasn't just playing her like a fiddle.

She shoves through guests at the party, passing a concerned looking Zeke and yanking the door open. She needs to… God… she doesn't know what she needs. The world is caving in around her, and she can feel her heartbeat in her ears and she just wants to throw up and cry.

She knows deep down that he was always too good for her, she wasn't the prettiest, or the smartest, or the most attractive. Tobias Eaton really put on the performance of the year.

She throws herself out the door, the world swimming through her eyes as she blinks more tears from her gaze. A few voices behind her call out her name, and she recognizes them as Christina and Uriah. She doesn't think she can face them like this, Jesus Christ, and she feels a sob bubble up in her throat as she runs down the hallway and curls up into a small ball against the wall.

She hates herself for feeling this heartbroken, this lost, after they only shared a few kisses together. After all, Tobias probably has a much longer history with Nita that he never even told Tris about.

"Fucking mistletoe," Tris grumbles to herself.

"Tris?" She hears a gentle voice call out from behind her. She turns to see Uriah and Christina, gazing down at her with concern and pity.

Great.
