Heroes
As night had come in Gotham once again, an explosion went off in 1 of the digital buildings before 4 thieves with jetpacks flew out and began making their escape. "Ah, the D-7 chip. Digital gold." 1 of the thieves said while looking at the chip.
"Sweet." The thief beside him said with a smile as they continued to fly off.
But unknown to them, Batgirl was ready to make her move. "Not tonight, boys." She said before using her grapple to get 1 of the thieves, pulling him back and punching him unconscious before flying out to deal with the other 3. But another thief flew right into Batgirl and knocked the Dark Knight hard into a rooftop before joining the others.
But as Batgirl was getting back up, a gaseous, freezing female being suddenly flew up to the thief before asking. "What's your hurry, handsome?" And froze him with her power with just a touch of her finger.
As the last 2 thieves tried to get away, a big magma-like being broke off a large piece of bridge and threw it at them with superhuman strength, disabling their jetpacks and making them fall. But another superpowered being: a two-dimensional being with the ability to stretch his body to incredible lengths caught them and put them with the other captured thieves while joining his teammates.
"Scratch 3 losers." The magma being said as the crowd cheered for them.
While this was happening, Batgirl was watching from a distance while throwing the 4th thief to them. "Whoa. Who the hell were those guys?"
Later
A newsflash was being shown on tv about the three new superheroes in Neo-Gotham. "Magma, Freon and 2-D man. Who is this Terrific Trio? Tonight, we got the exclusive insight story. Several months ago at the Bay Rich Research center; prize winning physicist Doctor Mike Morgen, his fiance Mary Michaels and lab assistant Stuart Low, were accidentally exposed to dangerous levels of radiation during a particle fusion experiment. We warn viewers that the tape we're about to show may be intense for children."
That was when Terry, who was watching the insight story with his brother Matt on tv said. "Let's change the channel."
But Matt tried to stop his older brother. "No! I wanna see it! I wanna see it!"
Terry gave him a look first. But then he shrugged. "Well... alright. But if you get nightmares for the next few weeks it's your own fault." He warned before turning the volume on.
As the video showed how the three scientists were hit by a large radiation beam, all three screamed in agonizing pain.
Matt however smiled brightly. "Cool!"
The news reporter continued saying as the scientist transformed after gaining superpowers. "The result: Their bodies went through dramatic changes. Now, these heroes have promised to use their incredible abilities to clean up Gotham."
The image then showed the Terrific Trio's new headquarters in Neo-Gotham. "The government has spared no expense in establishing their new base of operations: The Trio Tower. United in their war on crime, here comes the Terrific Trio!"
Meanwhile in the Batcave
Max and Bruce were watching the same insight story on the Batcomputer before Bruce turned it off as Max said with a small smile. "Well, with these new heroes in town, I guess I have a lot more time to do my homework, or have time for myself for now." Before she suddenly got serious. "But something tells me that this won't last."
"I know. I have the same feeling." Bruce stated with his usual untrustworthy look on his face, as even the old Batman had his doubts if these new heroes would be here to protect Gotham from crime forever, maybe a lot sooner than they both thought.
The next night
A hostage situation was going on and the police were trying to reason with the ones that were holding a woman and her little girl. "Wait. Just a little more time. That's all I'm asking." A police officer said as Barbara Gordon was driven onto the scene and he gave her the phone. "Hope you have better luck."
"This is Gordon." She said.

The officer went to his boss and asked. "Should we go in?"
"We can't take the chance. That's councilman Green's family in there." Gordon answered with regret.
Meanwhile, inside the building
"She'll cave." The leader said with confidence.
"And if she doesn't?" 1 of his henchman asked.
"Plan B." He answered while placing an explosive in the chair the family was tied up to.
But suddenly, the 2-D Man's arms came through the floor and wrapped around the leader, restraining him. "Guess who." He said.
Just then, Freon came through the ventilation system and avoided the laser fire before she froze the guns and the other 2 henchman's legs up to their ankles. "What's the matter, boys? Cold feet?"
The last henchman tried to flee but when he opened the door, Magma was behind it, making him gasp. "Wrong door, Einstein.* He said before punching him in front of the little girl, who screamed at seeing him as he got the bomb and squeezed it in his hands.
The police, who were ordered to move in after hearing the girl's screaming, pointed their guns. "Freeze!" 1 of the offices said before they looked dumbfounded at the scene in front of them.

A bit later
As the police were walking out of the building with the wife and child, Magma walked up to them, much to the little girl's fear. "Don't let him hurt me!" She pleaded.
Gordon heard this and quickly got between them. "We'll take it from here." She told the hero.
Magma looked at the little girl, who was still afraid of his appearance and said sadly. "Right." He said before walking away, destroying a police vehicle while he was at it.
Later at the Trio Tower

"You wouldn't have to imagine if you'd been there." 2-D Man said with a raised eyebrow.
"Yeah. I'm still trying to figure out that budget meeting you went to that night." Magma said with suspicion as he walked up to Hodges.
"What are you implying?" Hodges asked.
But Freon got between them before it could escalate. "Calm down, Mike. It's not like he knew this was going to happen."
"Mary, you know how much I care for you, all of you. And we're doing everything we can to find a cure." Hodges assured his friends.
"You should let me help." Magma said, wanting to help with finding a cure.
"Michael, you can't even touch a test tube without melting it. Better you stay here where you can do some real good." Hodges reminded his friend before walking away, leaving a sad Magma behind.
As Hodges walked out of the tower, he walked up to a car that opened to reveal the military general Norman, who clearly wanted the Trio killed outright. "How are they?"
"Angry, frustrated, confused." Hodges answered.
"You promised you could control them."
"Give them time. It's a big adjustment." Hodges said as he got in the car.
"I hope you're right, Dr. Hodges, Cause heaven help us if you're not." General Norman said as the car left the tower.
Sometime later

Matt said with excitement as he thought so highly of both the Dark Knights, both past and present.
Max was grateful to hear that Matt thought so highly of both Batman and the new Batgirl that he thought they were better than anyone with superpowers. When Hodges put them under his microscope, he saw that the DNA was slowly deteriorating. "Has anyone seen this?"
"No, sir."
"Well run them again. We've gotta be absolutely certain." Hodges told him.
"Yes, sir." The assistant said before walking away.
But Hodges knew that general Norman needed to know about this, so he contacted him. "General Norman, we've got a problem."
But as the assistant went to do his job, he was assaulted by someone.
Meanwhile
Batgirl was patrolling the city in the Batmobile while talking to Bruce. "I don't know why you even bother sending me out. With the Trio around, there's not even a purse snatcher in sight. And it's been weeks since they first appeared. Maybe we were both wrong about them this time." She said before she picked up something. "Wait. I'm picking up something in the inferred scanner."
"A fire?" Bruce asked.
"Maybe. I'll check it out." Batgirl said before heading to the location of the heat spike. When she got there, she looked around and saw strange footprints that were melting the floor. "Oh no."
"What is it?" Bruce asked.
"If this is who I think it is, then we've got big trouble." Batgirl answered, thinking that there was only 1 thing that could make melting footprints like these as she walked further in, seeing a melting wall... before Magma stepped out, holding a special case that contained the DNA cube. "Magma, what are you doing here and what's that?"
"Out of my way." Magma said before swatting Batgirl into a wall.
When he tried to leave, Batgirl got up, got out her sword and got in front of him while pointing it at him. "Whatever you're thinking, Dr. Morgen, rethink it. I don't wanna have to fight you!"
But Magma still didn't listen and just grabbed Batgirl before throwing her into a wall again before getting into his car and taking off. Batgirl knew that she couldn't let him get away and quickly got into the Batmobile before following him while keeping her distance until Magma got back to the Trio Tower and she quickly got inside.
After Magma got to the others and gave 2-D Man the cube, his teammates were confused by this. "I can't believe you broke into the lab."
"Why would you take such a risk?" Freon asked.
"I had to know the truth." Magma answered.
"But Hodges said-"
"Hodges lied. See for yourself." Magma said while pointing to the nearby scanner.
After 2-D Man put the data cube in the scanner, with Batgirl watching from a distance, they saw that the DNA was deteriorating, meaning their conditions were irreversible, much to 2-D Man's and Freon's shock and sadness. "We'll be like this forever." 2-D Man said with sadness as he looked at himself.
"No, it's worse than that." Magma said with even more sadness, knowing that it was far worse than being like they were forever.
But suddenly, missiles drilled into the tower and exploded before the screen showed them that military vehicles were advancing on the tower. "We're under attack!" Freon said.
Magma recognized the bigger aircraft and knew who it was. "It's general Norman! We've been double-crossed!"
As general Norman and his army were firing on the tower, Batgirl was avoiding anything that would fall on her. "Great. Now the army's attacking them. Someone must have told them about the Trio's deterioration and as usual, they want to kill them so they don't become a threat. Typical."
"Gibson, get out of there now!" Bruce told his protege.
As the army continued to fire on the tower, groups of soldiers were ziplining in and engaged the Trio, who held them off with their powers while trying to escape. After sealing a hanger door and heading for it, their car flew out of the tower and was flying away until an assault vehicle fired missiles at it, destroying it!
"This is Eagle 1. Target has been eliminated. Station your men at all the entrances, I want that Tower secure." General Norman ordered his men, who did just that.
"You heard the general. Those freaks are history." A soldier said to the others.
But Batgirl knew better. "I don't think so, soldier." She said while looking at a block with smoke coming from under it.
"The car was just a decoy?" Bruce asked.
"See for yourself. It's not over yet." Batgirl said while moving the block out of the way to see a molten tunnel, made by Magma. "And I know just where they're going."
Later at the research building
Hodges was talking to general Norman, who was somewhat sad for the doctor but knew his duty came first. "I know they were your friends, Dr. Hodges, but you yourself said that their condition was deteriorating and eventually they would have become dangerously psychotic." He said before the screen went black.
Hodges was worried and quickly got his gun out from under his desk before his hand got frozen by Freon! "Hello, Howard."
That was when Magma ran in and smashed a part of his desk. "We have to talk." He said before they took him to the radioactive machine that turned them into superpowered beings that night.
2-Man then put the DNA cube on the scanner part of the machine as Freon said. "We've been reviewing the data on the particle fusion experiment."
"According to your notes, you knew about the danger." 2-D Man said while looking at the screens that showed the danger of the experiment.
"No! I had no idea this would happen." Hodges said, obviously lying.
"Just a freak accident?" Magma asked while getting close to his former friend.
"Yes. One in a million." Hodges said before Freon froze his legs before they turned on the radiation machine. "What are you doing?"
"Finishing what we started." Magma answered.
"But you can't!"
"Why not?"
"You'll kill us all! Once it reaches critical mass, the radiation can't be contained." Hodges revealed, admitting what they already knew.
"Then you knew all along." Freon said while getting close to him.
"Yes." Hodges admitted.
"That's why you weren't there that night."
"Yes, and you weren't supposed to be either." Hodges said, telling her that she wasn't supposed to be there that night.
"What?" Freon asked with confusion.
"Michael had it all: the brains, the success, your affection. I figured with him out of the way, I'd have a chance." Hodges admitted, revealing that he only wanted Michael dead so he could have what he did.
"You figured wrong." Freon said while backing up to her friend and her lover.
As the radiation was increasing, Hodges pleaded. "Please, turn it off."
"No." Magma told his former friend, all 3 of them determined to destroy themselves and take Hodges, General Norman and all of Gotham along with them.
"But the whole city will become a hot zone! You're crazy!"
"I believe your words were 'dangerously psychotic.' 2-D Man corrected, recalling the words their former friend said to general Norman.
"We are what you made us." Freon added, all 3 having lost any care for the city.
But that was when Batgirl, who had followed them called out. "Party's over, you 3!" She said before firing 2 batarangs from her wrist that Freon froze before flying up to the Dark Knight to attack her, with one of the frozen batarangs shattering when it hit the floor, allowing Hodges to grab it.
While Batgirl was gliding to avoid getting hit by Freon's freeze blasts, 2-D Man made the new Dark Knight flick into a wall like a rubber band, allowing Freon to freeze her arms and Magma to punch her, much to Bruce's surprise before Batgirl got free and kicked Magma away from her by using the suit's full strength. When Batgirl avoided Freon's blasts again, 2-D Man restrained her with his body. "Finish her, now!" He said before Magma tried to punch Batgirl but accidentally hit his teammate instead when the new Dark Knight got out of the way, making the rubber being let go of her before she led Freon's blast to restrain Magma's legs!
"No!" She said before Batgirl activated the nearby venting system that sucked 2-Day Man into it, trapping him inside before it sucked up Freon, whose body was broken apart and sucked into the shaft, killing her!
But this only enraged Magma, who broke free from the ice by breaking it before he stopped Batgirl from reaching the emergency abort switch on the radiation machine.
"I've gotta shut that thing off. Thousands of people will die, and I won't let that happen, Dr. Morgan. And you can't let it happen either. You're a hero, remember?" Batgirl asked, pleading with the former hero to stop this madness.
"No, I'm an accident. Real heroes like you, they make a choice. And I never did." Magma retorted, having embraced the monster he was turned into. When Hodges got his legs mostly free, he tried crawling to the exit, which Magma noticed. "No! You're staying for this." Before he then threw a large column at the doorway, blocking it.
And with that, Batgirl was forced to spray Magma with a nearby fire hose, cooling him off enough before the new Dark Knight then punched him several times before kicking him away before he was cooled into a normal-looking rock.
Batgirl then quickly deactivated the radiation machine through the emergency abort system, shutting it off before she moved the large column out of the way of the exit door and looked at Hodges with a glare. "Satisfied?"
"No. You don't understand, I was their friend." A guilt ridden Hodges answered.
"Yeah right." Batgirl said with disgust before walking away, leaving a regretful and mourning Hodges behind.
