Chapter 9

Wait, What

As soon as Hyde laid eyes on Kelso, he had a million emotions going through his mind at the same time. Anger was the most prominent by far. It was the first time since receiving his beloved Camino that he never gave the car a second thought. Barely bothering to come to a stop before slamming the parking brake on and jumping out of the car. With all the rage he was feeling and the fact that he right now possessed zero zen, he was walking rather slowly to face the taller Kelso.

"Hyde, I can explain man" Kelso stammered.

"Say ow" Hyde practically growled to a now very confused Kelso.

"Why would I say ow" questions Kelso.

Hyde's fist connects with Kelso's face . He should have done this a long time ago. It might be the only way to get through to some as dumb as Michael Kelso. He should feel bad about laying out a close friend, but he doesn't.

"Ow, oh now I get it" yelps Kelso.

Jackie, having jumped out of the car, runs up to Hyde. "Oh my God Steven, are you ok?"

Hyde hugs Jackie back and leaves a soft kiss to the top of her head. He can feel Donna's eyes boring into him. He's not known for his public displays of affection, but he knows he's going to have to change if it means keeping his chick.

Hyde helps up a surprised Kelso. Kelso probably deserves a real ass beating, but he just doesn't have it in him. "Kelso this is the thing that I need you to understand. Jackie is with me. I will mess up, I mean look at me, I'm a guy. I'm not letting her go again, so if we are going to remain friends you need to stop trying to sleep with my girlfriend. It is the last time I'm going to ask you again to butt out of mine and Jackie's personal business."

Kelso looks at his friends, standing in each other's arms and he realizes that while he was mostly joking with Jackie when he walked into her motel room naked talking about "doing it" a part of him truly hoped that she would have said yes. Not because he was still in love with her but because he wanted to believe that she had never gotten over him. He liked to think that he held a special place in Jackie's heart. After seeing how devastated Jackie was after Hyde took off he came to the conclusion that she really truly loved Hyde in a way that she had never loved him. The love he and Jackie shared was puppy love, but the way she felt about Hyde, that was real shit. Maybe everyone is right, it really is time to grow up.

"Hyde man your right. I was mostly joking when I walked in that motel room. I get it now, and I'm sorry. I mean it, I'm really sorry. It won't happen again." Kelso, feeling somewhat better having cleared the air between him and Hyde. What he wasn't expecting was the wallup of Jackie's hand across his cheek. "Damn, Jackie. I said I was sorry" Kelso squealed.

"Michael, you said that you were mostly joking. My life is not a joke, and I'm serious so you better be listening. We are never going to DO IT again!" Jackie screams. Growing tired of all this drama Jackie grabs Steven's hand and turns to walk into the Forman's kitchen.

"Steven I just want to wash up, get something to drink and then take a nap."

Donna and Fez walk in behind the reunited love birds and can't help but overhear what Jackie is saying. "Jeez midget it's barely afternoon you seriously can't be that tired already" Donna quips.

" Listen lumberjack, I hardly got any sleep last night. I could hear you sawing logs half the night from all the way over here. Seriously Donna you should go to the doctor or something, that can't be normal" Jackie snaps.

Kelso screams "Burn" from the driveway.

"Jeez Jackie I was only joking." clammers Donna.

"Oh My Goddess is Finally Back" Fez happily exclaims.

Hyde and Jackie go to the living room so she can make her way to the upstairs bathroom to wash up. He finds Mrs Forman watching her daytime stories in the living room. "Mrs F can I ask you something?" Hyde asks.

"Why Steven, you know that you can ask me anything."

"Well it's more for Jackie. I guess you know that her Mom flaked again. I know Jackie is technically grown up now, but do think that you could check her out or maybe take her to see one of your doctor friends at the hospital. She got sick today, and I guess she said she's not been feeling well for a while. She thinks it's just stress but I don't know. Maybe it's like when she was sick a couple of months ago. Could you maybe make it your idea, you know how she gets when she thinks people pity her."

" Oh Steven don't even get me started on that woman. She doesn't deserve to be called a Mother. It just makes me sick the way she treats Jackie. You know I knew she hadn't had much of an appetite lately, but I thought it was because… well you know what I thought. I'm going to call Dr Carpenter and ask him to check Jackie out. He owes me a favor. I'm sure it won't be any trouble. I'll go call him now."

Jackie makes her way downstairs and sees Steven sitting on the couch. She looks at him. She's so happy that he's finally home and at the same time she's so sad and angry that he didn't trust her again. She's even more angry that he betrayed her again. She can't say that she's forgiven him. Somehow being without him is worse than forgiving his betrayal. There has to be a way to get through to him.

She makes her way to sit beside Steven on the couch. "Hey Puddin Pop, whatcha doing?"

"Waiting for you." Hyde replies as he puts his arm over her shoulder.

Jackie sits close to Steven and lays her head on his shoulder. She is starting to feel a little better and maybe actually starting to feel a little hungry. Just as soon as she thinks about what she wants to eat Mrs Forman comes through the swinging door.

"Hey Jackie dear, you look better, but you know what I was thinking. Maybe I could take you to see one of my friends from the hospital so that he could check you out and make sure that everything is ok."

"I don't know Mrs Forman. I think that it's probably just stress."

"Well Jackie it would make me feel so much better if you let me take you to the doctor. I just called him and he said he could squeeze you in right now if I brought you down to the hospital. What do you say sweetie, do it for me." Mrs Forman asks.

I turn to Steven. He knows how much I hate people feeling sorry for me but I guess I could go for Mrs Forman's sake. "I guess it couldn't hurt anything. Maybe he could give me something to help settle my stomach. Steven, do you want to go with us?" I ask hopefully. I guess I'm just scared that if I go without him he might not be here when I get back.

"Sure grasshopper, if that's what you want."

"Ok Mrs forman I'll go to the doctor if it makes you feel better"

A little later in the Doctor's examination room

"Hello Kitty, who are these nice young people you brought in today?" Dr Carpenter asks.

"This is my son Steven Hyde and his girlfriend Jackie Burkhardt. She hasn't been feeling that well lately."

"Ok Miss Burkhardt, can I have you jump up on the examining table so I can check you out. Do you want Kitty and your boyfriend in here or would you like them to wait outside?"

"I want them to stay if that's ok." Jackie replies somewhat shyly. Doctors and hospitals always make her nervous.

"That's perfectly fine. So what exactly has been going on" he asks while beginning her examination.

"Well for the last few weeks I've been feeling a little sick to my stomach off and on. I have also been a little more tired than usual but I think it's just stress." She hates the worried look on Steven's face. She knows that he blames himself for whatever is wrong with her.

"I see. So what has a pretty girl like you stressed out" the doctor asks while taking her pulse.

Jackie looks down, " I had a misunderstanding with Steven. We are working it out now, so I kinda thought that my stomach would have settled by now."

"I see. Have been sick recently or taken any other medications other than the birth control you listed in your file."

"No," Jackie replies.

"Doc she had the flu or something a couple months ago. That couldn't be what's wrong could it?" asks Hyde.

"Oh I completely forgot about that Steven. That other doctor gave me some medicine, but I forget what it was called."

"Do you recall if it was an antibiotic of some sort, maybe penicillin or amoxicillin?" asks Dr Carpenter.

"Yeah it was penicillin." Jackie replies wondering what the big deal is about since it was like two months ago. Surely that has nothing to do with what's wrong now. Then she had a fever, and everything. Surely it's not related.

"Miss Burkhardt can I ask are your menstrual cycles regular, and when was your last cycle"

All of a sudden Kitty is sitting on the edge of her seat, Hyde has a look of disbelief, and Jackie is actively counting backwards. She has to start over several times.

"My periods are always regular, but they were a little lighter the last couple of months. My mother always says that happens when women are stressed."

Hyde looks relieved now that he knows she in fact did have her lady problem last month.

"I see. Can I get you to lay down please." Jackie complies. The Dr begins to feel Jackie's abdomen and off to the side Mrs Forman can barely hold herself together.

"Miss Burkhardt, you can sit up now. Did this other Doctor mention that while you were taking your penicillin you should use a different method of birth control?"

"No, what does that have to do with why I'm here today?

"Well Miss Burkhardt while your mother is right stress can cause change in your cycle.I don't believe that is what is causing all of your symptoms."

"What is " Jackie and Hyde ask at the same time. He walks over to the table where Jackie is sitting, to give her support and take her hand. To be honest Mrs Forman is starting to freak him out a little. She has a huge smile on her face.

"Well mind you I'm going to order a blood test to confirm, but it appears Miss Burkhardt that you are about two months along in your pregnancy." Dr Carpenter says to a shocked room.

Mrs Forman squeals in delight.

At the same time Hyde and Jackie are looking at the doctor dumbfounded. Both speaking simultaneously, "Wait, What?"
