It took Rose a while to release her daughter and sit back down… she couldn't believe her eyes!
"I don't understand? What happened?", was all Rose could say through tears.
"After I eloped with Tulsa things started to get hard, we fought a lot. Too much really. I made it in a small town theater for a while. I made good money, but then I lost everything because of a fire in our apartment. I was the only one working, so it wasn't enough to pay for all the damages, which resulted on me writing to Grandpa. I heard about Louise, how is she?" June asked hoping that her sister was okay.
"It took you that long to come back? Things have changed…" Rose sniffed.
Rose had her own life as Louise had hers. Louise was successful in Burlesque, although Rose never thought that 'successful' and 'burlesque' would go together in the same sentence. Yet here she was! Taking a few deep breaths, she managed to calm herself.
"Mama?"
Rose felt her heart begin to race
Oh my poor baby! she thought to herself, wiping away more tears. The hormones were not making it any easier for her to calm back down…
"Then why did you not come back home? When things got bad with Tulsa.'' Her voice was shaking with emotion.
Herbie took Rose's hand in his, he was worried about how upset she was. He was worried about her and the baby.
June sighed in exasperation because Rose didn't say a word. No one did.
"How could you be so selfish?!" June snapped, suddenly very angry with her mother.
"W-what do you m-mean?" Rose choked.
"I mean how could you be so selfish! You ripped this family apart for your own benefit!"
Rose knew she was not the best mother in the world, she knew what she had done, she knew! She used to be able to handle it, but now? Her head hurt from crying and the baby was kicking violently, it was making her stomach upset again.
"I-I did it for you, June…" Rose whimpered, her chest was heaving and her shoulders were starting to shake.
"Rose... you need to breathe, please?" Herbie was desperately trying to help Rose feel better, but nothing was working.
June huffed and rolled her eyes. She was angry at Herbie for supporting Rose when no one was there for her. June had no one… She loathed Rose and Herbie's happiness. She wanted that too. June knew her mother meant well and yet she was still angry and hurt. But after seeing her mother's reaction, she knew that Rose had changed in some way.
"H-Herbie? Honey? I don't feel well…" Rose admitted, resting one hand on her bump.
"You should drink some water…" He handed her a glass of cold water and made her take a few sips.
"Better?"
"Much! I sometimes forget that cold stuff calms me down…"
"Rosie, you need to eat, I think we all should put this aside until dinner is over 'cause we haven't even ordered yet…"
Rose was starting to calm down and to feel hungry instead of sick. They called a waiter over and tried to talk like a normal family.
"Mama, I'm sorry… I didn't mean to hurt you that much."
"Oh, June, it wasn't just you, I've not been feeling well lately…" Rose mumbled,
"Herbie, honey, please pass the salt?"
Herbie chuckled at how absorbed Rose was with her food. He handed her the salt shaker and kissed her cheek.
"Yeah, like your feeling so sick, you just ate like half a pizza and a bowl of pasta!" June chuckled.
Rose just rolled her eyes and ordered some chocolate cake for dessert.
"Hey, Rose? Can I talk to you? It'll just take a second." Herbie asked.
The two both stood and Herbie guided Rose to the back of the restaurant.
"Rose, how are you?"
"What do you mean, I'm fine!" she smiled softly at Herbie's concern.
"You just had a huge fight with June! You were so upset just a little while ago… I'm worried…" he sighed, pulling Rose into a hug.
"Oh, Herbie… I feel better now because of you!" She smiled and brought him into a tender, sweet kiss. Herbie rested a hand on Rose's belly.
"Is the baby sleeping?"
"Hmm?" Rose murmured, still distracted by the kiss.
"The baby, is it sleeping?" He smiled against her lips.
The moment they broke apart, Herbie felt a movement under his hand.
"Well, I'll take that as a no, then…"
It was the first time he had ever felt his baby move. His baby. He wanted everyone to know how happy he was. Happy to have Rose and happy to be starting a family with Rose. They headed back to the table.
"Should we tell June about her new sibling?" Herbie asked as they walked back.
"I don't know… How well will she take it?" Rose whispered worriedly.
"Well, if she'd get mad, she'd get mad at me. I did it." he smirked.
"Fine… I think she's already suspecting something… Oh, and you. Are. A. Dork.-" Rose laughed, "but you're my dork!"
"That's right! I'm yours!"
They sat down and Rose took a deep breath.
Alright, Rose, hope for the best. But prepare for the worst. Right? You can do this! Rose told herself.
"June? Papa? Herbie and I have some very important news to share." Rose sighed and took Herbie's hand, squeezing it under the table.
"I-well, we... We got some very exciting news! Herbie and I, well, we're having a baby!" Rose was smiling so hard it hurt her face a little bit, but it felt so good to feel such happiness! Now all that was left was to keep it that way…
