Interlude

Dick cut the call, a sad look on his face. He had just gotten off the phone with Tim, and even though he was telling him everything was fine, he could hear the opposite in his voice. He knew something was wrong and he wanted to intervene, but he was afraid of making things worse. He knew that sometimes Tim could shut down very quickly when he wasn't ready to talk. And obviously, he was.

He hoped it was going better than before with his team. No less than two weeks after Clark's return to life, Bruce had decided that it was time for the apprentices to resume their group, and thus join their base at Mount Justice. This was Bruce's way of exiling Tim so that he could focus his research on Cadmus and Clark.

It had been months since Clark had disappeared from all the screens and if Bruce had not wanted to track him down at first, his concern had won over his stubbornness. He now spent most of his time following up every possible lead on Cadmus and Clark. He was convinced that the two of them were closely following each other, and for this purpose Bruce traveled to the four corners of the world.

This time, he followed a lead and flew to Chile. Dick was once again in charge of Gotham and had to deal with Jay as well. Or rather, keep him from killing bad guys, beating up passersby on the street, or alienating the rest of the world.

Jay was acting this way because of him, Dick knew. Since the events with Cadmus, Jay had become much more protective of him. If it bothered him at first, he'd come to terms with it. In any case, he could not make anything against, then as well to get used to it.

He sighed, wondering if one day things would get back to normal. If it was even possible. Clark had certainly left a void and his departure had affected many people around him. No one knew what had happened to him since he said he wasn't coming back. Bruce had asked Clark's boss for information. After pretending to be interested in the locals, he had managed to find out what had become of Clark Kent: he had quit the paper and never returned.

For his part, Dick had tried to reach Clark on every means of communication he knew, but he had never gotten a response. It was Jason, who had insisted that he stop and leave Clark alone. After much thought, he'd finally understood why. Why Jason was telling him that. So he'd let it go. But sometimes, like now, he hesitated to reach out to him again. Maybe, because he wasn't Bruce, Clark would get in touch with him. But things didn't work that way.

Now the only connection Clark had to anyone was his mother. Martha Kent had returned home three months ago. Bruce had gone straight to her in his suit and was met with a gun and Krypto, who was obviously keeping a constant eye on Martha.

Dick knew that Bruce could easily neutralize Krypto with kryptonite, but he wasn't going to risk being hostile to Martha. Attacking her would mean alienating the Kryptonian for an eternity. Besides, the farm girl wouldn't be intimidated by a man dressed as a flying rodent who had betrayed her son. It was a certainty that she knew what Batman had done to her son, Clark had certainly warned her.

He wondered what Martha's reaction would be if he went to the farm. Krypto had seen him a few times before and the animal hadn't seemed to dislike him. Maybe he would remember him. Maybe on the spot he would learn more about where Clark might be. Again, his desire to find Clark resurfaced and he couldn't keep his thought to himself:

"Maybe we should go to Smallville and try to talk to Martha, if Bruce has come up empty again."

Behind him, he heard a growl.

"It's Bruce's job to handle this. He has to do it alone. "

Dick turned around in the Cave chair and looked at Jay, arms crossed over his chest. He was already dressed to go out and holding his Red Hood helmet in one hand.

"Bruce is going to go crazy! This whole thing is turning into an obsession. "

Jason shrugged.

"He's only reaping what he sows. "

Dick looked at him in total bewilderment. He was talking about their mentor and his father !

"I think you're being a little harsh, Master Jason. "

Both men turned to the butler. Jay's response was immediate:

"Not harsh, but realistic, Alfred. "

His scathing tone embarrassed Dick.

"Bruce is doing the right thing. All he wants is to protect the Earth and its people. "

"Protect them from Superman ? Big deal ! I'm sorry, but he can say what he wants, I don't agree with what he did. Clark was right to leave. "

Dick reacts immediately:

"How can you say that?! You don't know what that means, Jay. "

The man looked at him coldly, his eyes turning green rather than blue as they always did when he was angry.

"You don't know what you're talking about. " He paused. "Let's go before we're late. "

And with that, Jay put on his helmet and left. Dick glanced at Alfred.

"I'll stay here, Master Richard, if you need me. "

Dick nodded and went to get ready.

They arrived on the roof of the building ten minutes before the exchange was to take place. Dick looked down the alley and spotted two guards at the entrance and exit of the restaurant they were above. Barbara had given them some tips on drug dealers who were selling real crap to people and she had asked them to intervene in Gotham.

Barbara was following this organization closely with Huntress and Black Canary. Tonight, he was doing them a favor, as they apparently had another intervention to make that they didn't want to miss. Not wanting to step on their toes, Dick had accepted without question. After all, he owed it to Barbara.

He snapped out of his thoughts when Red Hood waved. He saw a delivery truck pull into the alleyway near the restaurant's exit door and open its doors. Dick pulled out his small pocket camera, the latest high-tech acquisition, and took several shots, pointing out the delivery men's faces, the license plate and the men loading the truck. Seriously, it was burned for miles that it wasn't Cantonese rice.

He put the camera away and signaled to Red Hood that he was done. Red Hood waited for the right moment to shoot the truck and insert a bug. Dick didn't think it was very discreet, but as long as it worked, he had no problem with it.

They both left the roof they were on and went to their respective motocycles, which were not in the same place. As agreed, when the truck left, Red Hood followed it, keeping it in sight, while Dick received their location on the GPS screen of his motorcycle.

Nightwing waited several minutes before deciding to take over from Red Hood. As soon as he was behind him, Jay changed course. That was how they had decided they would follow the truck undetected: change occasionally so as not to arouse suspicion, but without making too many changes.

They both had black motorcycle helmets on their heads, one on a bike with red and the other with blue. Dick had a camouflage system on his vehicle that could make it change color and he decided to save that feature for later if needed. Jay, on the other hand, had planned to remove his helmet on the second change: this guy didn't care if he could be seen with his face uncovered.

The truck took them to the edge of town and they had to drive further away from the truck. They came to an old paper mill and Jay could see the truck going inside. Dick arrived a few minutes later, also looking around. The whole area around them was open, and while there didn't seem to be anyone there, no doubt there would be people inside.

"We need to know how many of them there are," said Dick, as he readied himself.

Red Hood shrugged, checking his guns.

"Well, I say we go for it. "

"That's stupid, Jay. If there are twenty guys with guns, we're screwed. "

Red Hood sighed.

"So what's your plan? "

Dick frowned.

"I'm thinking about it. "

"Then we'll do it my way. "

"Your way is suicide. And we're not killing anyone, Jay! "

Red Hood put on his red helmet and looked up.

"What a headache you can be! "

Dick saw him get on his motorcycle and before he could react, he saw him speeding toward the paper mill with the engine roaring.

"What a fucking asshole !" Dick said as his gut tightened.

Without thinking, he climbed on his motorcycle and started up as the Red Hood drove into the opening door. He heard the gunshots and ran inside, not knowing what to expect. A gunfight. He ran into the middle of the gunfire and stopped behind the delivery truck, surprised that he hadn't been shot. Then he went into action.

He neutralized the first man who was pointing a gun at him and cut off the breath of a second man with a well-placed blow. Pulling out his electrified sticks, Dick began to practice his stick fighting skills. Punching the men in hand-to-hand combat while Jay covered him, they soon found themselves side-by-side to take on the group of smugglers.

It was fast. Dick didn't even have to use his best techniques and spins to neutralize them. He was almost disappointed. There could have been more of them! Then he heard Jason comment:

"We would have had them, and you could tell from a mile away that these guys weren't trained. It was a piece of cake. "

Dick looked around at all the men spread out around them. He sighed, then contacted the police. From there, they only had a few minutes to leave. For his part, Jay searched the men on the ground.

"Pfff, look at them, besides having shitty weapons they didn't know how to aim. Talk about a bunch of drug dealers. "

"They're just henchmen, Red Hood. Oracle just wanted us to stop the delivery, she probably wants to attack on several fronts. It's up to her to handle the rest. "

Jay sighed and returned to his bike.

"We've got to get out of here. I hope they didn't screw up my paint job, I just had it redone. "

Dick shook his head and picked up his bike. His bike had a few bullet holes.

"Yeah, well, they screwed up mine," he said wearily.

Jay started up.

"Yeah, but yours is ugly. "

Dick followed him down the road, thinking that he was still wondering how he could stand a guy like that.

"Your clothes, Master Richard. "

Dick quit the bathroom wipping himself off and turned to the butler at the door.

"Oh, thank you, Alfred. "

He retrieved the belongings and caught a glimpse of an intruding element out of the corner of his eye.

"And for you, Master Jason. "

"Ah, great Alfred! Thank you. "

Dick turned to Jason, who was settled on his bed, completely naked with just a towel around his waist, checking his things.

"What the hell are you doing here, Jay? "

The interested party gave him a big smile.

"I love to watch you when you get out of the shower. "

Dick couldn't help but blush as he held his towel firmly in one hand and his things in the other. Now he had noticed Jay's body and couldn't take his eyes off it.

"It's so easy to embarrass you, Birdy. "

Grayson glared at him.

"Screw you Jay, and go get dressed in your room! "

The Red Hood widened his smile even more.

"Why can't I get dressed in here? Are you afraid to see me naked? "

Dick gritted his teeth, but when he saw Jay get up without his towel, he turned his head away and grabbed the things he was missing from his room and headed for the bathroom.

"We're going to be late!" Jay shouted into the wind.

Dick locked the door and leaned against it as his briefcase fell to the floor. Jay had a way of getting him off his game at any time, even though he was known to be pretty patient and cool. But Jay was the guy who really drove him nuts. The only one who could make everything he thought or felt about him contradictory. He'd never known anyone who could make him feel that way.

Sighing, he got dressed and buttoned up his midnight blue shirt. Tonight, he was going to be able to relax quietly, see his friends and go to a club. Roy had proposed the idea for a while and in the end, it was the kidnapping of Kori and the others that motivated them all to get together outside of "work". So when Roy had sent an address, a date and a time, they had all agreed. Atlanta could be fun. It was a change.

Dick smiled as he fixed his medium-length hair. Besides, the coolest part was that Garth could come to Earth. Since the Prince's birth, things in Atlantis had moved around quite a bit, but now it was quiet, for a while. So Arthur had allowed him to take some time off and Garth had taken the opportunity to come back to Earth. He would have come with Tula, his girlfriend, but she was still on duty for a while.

Glancing at his mirror, he thought he was handsome enough to go out tonight. Alfred had really had good taste in giving him this shirt, it really brought out the blue of his eyes. The shade went hand in hand with his look. For a moment, he wondered if Alfred had not done that to favor his chances. Knowing the butler, it was not an option to exclude.

He then left the bathroom to put on his shoes. He noticed with some joy that Jay had left his room and that he had not left his wet towel on his bed, as he did every time he came into his room after a shower. Dick sighed and thought to himself that this was never the first time in anything Jay did. He was sure the Red Hood was just doing this to piss him off, because he wasn't bothering Tim as much.

Passing his pretty shoes that Alfred had obviously polished, he took his tux and his things then, once equipped, he went down, gratifying the butler in the passage. Then he went to the Cave. He needed to use Bruce's personal teleporter to get to Atlanta.

"Well, it took you a while to get ready. Shall we go? "

Jay was visibly waiting for him next door. Also well-dressed, he looked at Dick while his hands were in his pockets. Dick frowned.

"Wait, how do you know I'm going out? "

The interested party rolled his eyes before answering:

"I saw the messages on your phone. I'll go with you. "

Dick gave him a suspicious look.

"You're only coming if you promise not to mess with me. I really want to relax and you're stressing me out. "

Dick had to be honest with him. It was the rare time when Jay stopped himself. The latter shrugged his shoulders, with a little chuckle.

"Promise. As long as no one comes near you, it's okay. "

Dick rolled his eyes, then walked towards the teleporter, wondering why he hadn't just said no to Jay.

Dick looked at his watch. They were a few minutes early and it looked like no one had arrived yet. Jay had lit a cigarette and glared at him when Jay took a drag. Dick didn't like it when Jay smoked. The smell of the cold tobacco encrusted his clothes and afterwards, it was hard to smell Jay's perfume. Not that he liked smelling Jay, mind you, just his scent.

He then observed the Red Hood, who was smoking his cigarette while looking thoughtfully at the street. He too, was really well dressed. Dick hadn't had many opportunities to see him dressed like that outside of social events and big parties. He was wearing black pants and a green shirt casually pulled out of his pants, and like that, Jay was really good looking. The glint in his eyes stood out in the light of the street lamps and his hair moved in the wind. When it did that, Dick just wanted to stick his fingers in his big white lock and tangle his hair.

He snapped out of his contemplation when he felt a presence behind him. If he hadn't been used to it, he probably wouldn't have noticed it. He turned around with a big smile:

"Rachel! I'm glad to see you! "

The young woman addressed him a grin. She was definitely competing with Jay to smile as little as possible in society.

"Hi, Dick. I'm glad too. "

He wanted to point out to her that it wasn't obvious from her totally neutral face and her platonic voice. He came back to reality:

"Ah, and this is Jay. This is... uh... "

He didn't know how to introduce Jay. Everyone knew the Red Hood, but not his face. Jason tossed his cigarette butt to the ground and took out his pack to light another cigarette, barely looking up at Raven.

"Hi. "

"Hi. "

For a moment, Dick looked at each of them in turn with dismay. Why was he bothering to introduce two sociopaths? Really, these two would get along.

"You're making a face," Garth said as he and Koriand'r arrived.

"Garth! Man, am I glad to see you! "

Dick and Garth hugged each other.

"Me too, buddy. How are you? "

They both pulled away.

"As usual. Hey, Kori. "

"Hi Dick. "

There was a moment of awkwardness, but they didn't know how to say hello. Dick finally kissed her on the cheek and quickly stepped aside to let Raven through.

"Uh, this is Jay. "

"Oh, the famous Jay," Kori said cheerlessly.

There was an immediate tension as they greeted each other. Dick wasn't sure why, but it was awkward.

"Has anyone heard from Roy?" he asked to break the cold.

"He sent me a text message," the Tamaran woman replied. "He is a little late, he tells us not to wait for him. "

"Roy is always late. No surprise. "

Raven had a certain gift for keeping things cool. Dick and Garth gave each other a knowing look and entered the bar first.

The atmosphere was nice and warm. The music that was playing wasn't too loud and really, it was just what they needed for their early evening. Roy had indicated this bar because an acquaintance of his had recommended it to him and for eating it was just as nice. The other reason was that if there were strange people at the table, no one would ask questions. That was a real bonus.

Dick looked around the table at the others; Garth was wearing a blue collared shirt that hid the gills in his neck, which wasn't too bad, and in and of itself, he had no other visible features that indicated he was from the sea.

Kori had learned to take on the appearance of an earthling, hiding her orange complexion, luminescent green eyes and flame hair. Underneath her earthy appearance, she had a matte skin tone, green eyes reminiscent of Jay's and absolutely gorgeous red hair. Tonight she was wearing a plum tight dress, a darker purple than she usually wore.

Then he smiled by seeing that Raven had made real efforts. She had aged her appearance of a few years, to match theirs. This way, it would have avoided many questions and a refusal in box. Raven had made a loose braid with her beautiful hair with purple highlights and wore a black dress also tight. A true walking bomb, if she did not pull a head of three feet long.

Dick reflexively glanced at the menu, then thought about what to get. In the end, the Titans ordered pints of beer to start, while Jay preferred a soda, to Richard's astonishment. He didn't care for it any more: he was there to enjoy the evening, not to worry about him.

Roy arrived about fifteen minutes later, with a big smile:

"Hey everyone! Sorry for the delay, I made a more than improbable meeting on the way. "

He ordered a beer and sat between Dick and Raven.

"Who did you see?" asked Kori.

Roy frowned when he saw Jay at the table but turned to Koriand'r to answer:

"Harley, a girl who went to high school with me. She's gone off the deep end, she looks like a total freak. "

Dick smiled.

"I met a Harley, she was pretty crazy too. "

Roy laughed:

"That must be the name! Anyway, how are you all doing? "

"We're not too bad," said Garth.

The redhead drank a little of his beer.

"Good, so much the better. Not too complicated at home? "

"Let's just say the vacation was welcome. "

Dick smiled ruefully. The situation was not really calm in Atlantis. He really felt sorry for Arthur. After all his troubles, his people weren't even understanding of him.

"And you, Dick, do you know how the "Great Ones" are doing? "

He was the only one in the group who still got along well with his mentor and had a personal relationship with him. At the same time, Bruce was his adoptive father. But Bruce was still Bruce.

"Batman is still looking for Superman. "

"Ah, still no sign of him ?" Kori asked.

Dick shook his head.

"None. "

Roy shrugged and leaned back in his chair.

"Maybe he really has gone off the deep end and things aren't going well up there. "

Roy pointed to his head and mimed a fool. Dick put his glass down a little too hard on the table.

"Superman hasn't gone nuts, Roy. He's dead, he needs time. "

"Well, if I were him, I'd just be glad to be alive, I wouldn't shirk my responsibilities. "

Richard was about to react when he heard Jason's forced laughter.

"You really don't know what you're talking about. You really should shut up. "

The end sounded like a threat. Garth, standing next to Jay, turned to him:

"You should be careful what you say," he said warningly.

"Who the hell are you anyway? "asked Roy.

Dick gave Jay a warning look, and Jay stood up, taking out his pack of cigarettes.

"I'm gonna smoke. "

"I'll follow you," Raven said as she left the table.

Dick sighed. The evening was off to a decidedly bad start.

"So who's this guy?" asked Roy again.

"He's the Robin after me. Now it's Red Hood. "

Roy frowned and Garth interjected:

"Red Hood is the second Robin? But wasn't he dead? "

The acrobat nodded.

"Yes, he was. Before the Lazarus pit. "

Roy clutched his face in his hands.

"Oh, the idiot ! If I'd known Dick... "

"Leave it, he's always in a shitty mood. He already held Superman in high esteem, so with the events... he's a little more irritable. "

Dick then realized that the change in his behavior lately with him went hand in hand with what had happened with Clark.

"But then, he's your brother ?" Garth asked.

Dick laughed.

"Him, my brother? Certainly not! He's the only one of the three of us who wasn't adopted, even though he lived at the Manor for a while and B. took him under his wing, there was never more legally speaking. And then Jay as my brother is... unthinkable. "

"Your family is beyond weird, you know?" commented Roy.

Grayson widened his smile:

"Well, I'll go get our two sociopaths. "

The rest of the group laughed. Dick enjoyed teasing Raven about it. He was more than happy that tonight she had made the effort to change her appearance.

He joined them at the entrance to the bar, both with a cigarette in hand. Dick frowned, turning to Raven:

"Since when do you smoke? "

"It's occasional. Your friend is pretty straightforward. "

Dick turned to Jay, totally scandalized:

"You hit on Raven! "

Jay frowned.

"No, why would I do that? "

Dick didn't know what Raven was talking about. He turned to her:

"Direct in what way then? "

The half-demon rolled her eyes.

"In the sense that he doesn't mince words when he says what he means. You're even more pathetic than I thought. "

He scratched the back of his head, both embarrassed and trying not to take offense. Raven could be so scathing sometimes! He tried to change the subject before dropping even more in the esteem of the two people.

"Yeah, well, are you coming back? "

Jay threw his cigarette on the ground.

"Yeah. "

He then reached into his pocket and pulled out a twenty dollar bill, which he slipped to Raven as they walked back into the bar. Dick didn't understand why, but he was sure that somehow it concerned him.

The evening was well underway. Dick had decided to take his mind off things that night and let loose, so he, Roy and Garth took the liberty of having as many beers as they needed and throwing around bets like they used to do. Jay and Raven were drinking less loudly next to them and had switched to hard liquor. Only Kori seemed to be the wisest of all, sipping her beers more quietly.

The time passed quite quickly, and once the group had had plenty of time to eat and drink, Roy decided it was time to move on to another bar, where there was more atmosphere, and « more to do », in his opinion. Koriand'r and Raven were reluctant to follow them, and Jay wasn't planning on giving Dick a break.

Dick wanted to enjoy the evening with his friends. After a long reunion, they had a lot to talk about and they took a lot of time to talk and drink. Roy spent part of the evening talking about his love affairs, Kori about his sister and Garth about Atlantis. Dick talked a bit about Tim and Jay, who was mostly silent with Raven.

As the evening wore on and the drinks flowed, Dick watched Jason. He didn't get much of a chance to see him in these conditions, going out in a group, with other people who weren't trying to kill them or that he wasn't going to kill behind. Going out in a group to relax. Jay was making an effort. Dick could see him smiling every now and then, making a few comments, trying to say something funny. If there had been any tension at the beginning of the evening, Jay had mellowed a bit.

Dick could see that sometimes Jay was itching to make a scathing comment. But he appreciated the effort he was making with his demeanor, and with his attire as well. The shirt Jason was wearing brought out the color of his eyes, which were bottle green in low light. Dick had never noticed that he had such deep, bright eyes. It was almost mesmerizing. He wondered why he didn't wear this color more often, because it really made him good looking.

At times during the evening, their eyes would catch. Jason's was intense, bright, and seemed to see into the depths of his being. It was pleasant as it was terribly embarrassing, because it was Jason. And yet, he was looking at him. All the time. Dick felt that sometimes it even made him blush. He blamed it on the alcohol, and preferred to order more to get Jay and his gaze out of his head.

He managed, for a while, not to think about Jason. But just the thought of it unsettled him. Why did he have to think about him all the time? He thought about it so much that he didn't even pay attention to the conversation that had taken place, and barely reacted when they all got up to change places: they were going to a nightclub.

Dick was hot. Really hot. He left the dance floor and went to the counter to order another drink. The bartender seemed to hesitate for a moment before preparing his order, which he downed in one gulp. Jay had danced. With Raven. Dick had seen him smile at the young woman several times, laughing with her, while he had danced alone, watching Jason do it.

He ordered another drink, which he downed just as quickly. His head was spinning, but he didn't care. A few feet behind him, Jason was hitting on one of his friends. Maybe Dick would have to go home alone. Maybe Jay would be able to get her back to the Manor.

He didn't look up when he felt a presence next to him, sure it was Roy coming to order another drink. Instead, it was just a whisper in the hollow of his ear, so close he could hear it despite the loud music.

"You should stop drinking, Birdy. We should go home. "

"Leave me alone and go chase Rachel, she's waiting for you. "

His tone was clearly bitter. When Jay didn't answer, he turned his head towards him, to see a small smile on his face. It pissed him off that he was so hot. He understood Raven.

"Rachel is going to take Roy home. She offers to help us get home. "

Dick shrugged.

"I'll stay here with Kori and Garth. "

Jay frowned.

"They left an hour ago. You waved at them. "

Grayson squinted, trying to think. Was that why Garth had come to talk to him and Kori? He hadn't been paying attention.

"Come on. "

Jay grabbed him by the arm, paid the bill at the counter and led Dick out. Outside, Raven was waiting for them with Roy. They went to the nearest alley, which was dark enough for her to open a gate for them. Dick barely had time to greet her before Jay rushed them through the darkened doorway.

His head was spinning as he felt he was drunk. He vaguely saw Alfred open the door for them, he wasn't sure if he had greeted him or not. Then he felt Jay lay him down on a bed.

"Why didn't you go home with her?" he asked, closing his eyes.

He felt Jay take off his shoes, then heard him take off his own.

"Because I want to go home with you. "

Jay placed a kiss on his forehead. Dick could smell his cold tobacco and powder. He loved that smell on him.

"And I love seeing you jealous. "

Dick didn't understand right away. He straightened up as Jay sat next to him removing his shirt. He'd meant to say something. He couldn't remember what. His gaze was fixed on Jay's torso, his scars, his pecs, until it became a blur.

Dick toppled forward and Jay caught him against him. It didn't bother Dick in the least. With his eyes closed, he inhaled Jay's scent deeply. Underneath the gunpowder and tobacco, he could smell that citrus scent of his shower gel. He let out a sigh of contentment as he let himself inhale the scent of Jay's neck. Carried away in his momentum, he put down his lips, having the sudden urge to want to taste his skin. He felt Jay's throat tingle as he began to speak:

"Shit... why do you have to be drunk at that moment…"

Dick continued his excursion down his neck, until Jay stopped him.

"You need to get some sleep, Birdy. "

Grayson groaned in displeasure as Jason pulled him away and laid him down in the bed, but Dick continued to grab his arm. Giving up rather easily, Jay lay down with him, taking Dick in his arms: he would get him all eventually, and sober.
