''Matt…'', she finally mustered. He wasn't sure what she was thinking, her face just confused and surprised.
''Can we talk?''
Finally, he managed to say something, just in awe that Gabby was standing in front of him.
''Just…not here, okay?''
''Sure, wherever feels good for you,'' Matt immediately said. He didn't want to make her uncomfortable, knowing that he had put her on the spot by showing up.
He followed her outside. He immediately regretted coming here, seeing that it upset her.
''I am sorry Gabby for just showing up,'' He said as he put his hands in his pockets, moving forward and backward on his feet, something he always did as he got nervous. Looking at Gabby, he was still not sure how she felt.
She scratched her arm, not looking at him.
''If you want me to go back to Chicago, I can leav-''
''No, it is good you are here,'' she sighed.
She pointed over at one of the benches beside the hospital building.
''Want to sit down for a second.''
''Sure.''
Sitting beside each other, he wished that he had planned what he would say when he would finally see her. He knew that it would mean that there would be a lot less awkwardness between them.
''There is this bar near the hotel you are staying that is nice…we can have dinner and a drink there if you want?''
''Sounds good to me,'' Matt smiled, glad that things were going to the right way. He knew that it might not amount to anything, but for now he was glad that she would even talk to him.
He knew he had done nothing wrong and neither did she. But he also knew that there was a lot of confusion and hurt between them.
She gave him her new phone number before walking back inside. Matt waved just a little as she walked back inside. Honestly, what had happened just now was all that he could have hoped for.
Laying on his hotel bed, he started at the ceiling. He had walked around San Juan for a while, but couldn't keep his mind on the sightseeing. He was getting more and more nervous for tonight, worried what Gabby was going to say.
Or maybe, they would sit together and there would be nothing to talk about. All the worst scenarios were going through his mind. Walking around here, he wished that they had taken the time to go on a honeymoon to the Dominican republic as she had wanted. They hadn't done it as it had caused hard to get time off of work, but it seemed silly now as they should have taken the time.
Getting changed, he walked out of the hotel and towards the bar. It was hot out and as he walked to the bar, he was a bit worried that she wouldn't show up. He knew that she didn't owe him anything, but he did worry that she wouldn't be there.
He arrived at the bar, which was party inside and had a terrace outside.
Sitting down by one of the tables, having a view of the entry of the bar. He had gotten a table outside, enjoying the weather here. Especially now he wished that they had taken that vacation with Gabby. It was all still strange to him, but he hoped that someday he would share this with somebody. Especially Gabby.
Looking at his watch, he saw that Gabby was running late. He was concerned, knew that it might as well be that she wouldn't show up.
For a second he wanted to call her, but although she was running fifteen minutes late, he wanted to give her so more time. Her was worried that if he would bother her, she would get upset about it.
As he doubted over to call her, he spotted her at the gate though.
He waved at her, Gabby smiling as she spotted him and walking towards the table.
''Hey, you came,'' he blurted before he realized what he had said as she joined him at the table.
''Yeah, I promised I would.''
''I was not sure if you are even happy to see me, sorry I showed up Gabby,'' Matt said, knew that he had put her on the spot.
''It is fine, really,'' She said with a small smile as she sat down. They were quiet for a bit, not sure what to say or do. Gabby shuffled around on the chair, nervous.
When she had spotted Matt in the hospital, leaning against the door she had not sure how to feel. It was exciting, as she had missed him. Even though she had left him to go chase her dreams here on Puerto Rico, Matt still had a part of her heart. Although she was happy here, she did sometimes doubt if she had made the right choice, as she missed him terribly.
Looking at him, she thought that he looked tired and weary. He clearly had not been doing well the last few weeks.
It hurt her to see him like this. As much as she knew that when she had left that they were going to divorce, she did care for him. They had been through so much together that it was hard not to.
''Brett said you will be staying here – I can see why, it's nice here – so far I have seen,'' Matt tried to break the ice. Although he had not seen much of the island, he could see she was happy here. Seeing her happy, made him happy in return.
''I don't know, I haven't decided yet.'' Gabby said as she fumbled with the menu in her hands. Matt looked down as well, but had no idea what to order.
''Think you can help me out with ordering? I think I can make out most of the dishes, but some are mystery,'' Matt asked as he put his menu down again.
Gabby laughed for a second, moving her chair a bit closer.
''I think you will really like this – it's a bit like the chicken I made for our anniversary.''
''Sounds good,'' Matt smiled.
''I am amazed you are here Matt, first time leaving the country and doing it alone,'' Gabby said and for a second Matt thought she was teasing him, but she was being genuine as he could tell from her face.
''First time for everything.'' Matt said as he put the menu away, not doubting for a second that Gabby knew him well.
They got their food and drinks as Matt told about how things were at the firehouse and Gabby told about the house that she had been renting since a week, not wanting to stay in a house with the other volunteers anymore.
''How has the volunteering here been?''
''It's been good, I volunteer with medical relief in the smaller villages that have been affected by the hurricane and been helping in the hospital. They offered me a job in the hospital I might eventually want to take when the project is over and flies in new volunteers,'' Gabby explained and Matt nodded at her. He was so proud of her for following her passion and helping people.
''I am really proud of you, I hope you know that,'' Matt said and it was nothing but the truth. He was so proud of her doing this.
''I have missed you,'' Gabby smiled as she looked at him, a smile on her face.
Seeing that smile on her face, made him the happiest he had been in weeks. They chatted a bit more, mostly about life in Chicago. It hurt Gabby to see how Matt had been dealing with her leaving. Although he didn't let much on, she knew that he had been in shambles.
As nice as it was, Gabby had to call it a night soon as she had to work in the hospital again tomorrow.
Walking out of the café with her, Matt walked with her to her car. Although she had assured him he didn't need to. Opening her car door, she got in, smiling at him still.
He had been worried when he had seen her at the hospital, still not sure if she was happy to see him. He knew that this wasn't
For now he was just happy they had had such a nice evening together just now.
''If you come to the hospital tomorrow, we can have lunch together.''
Matt nodded, just eager to see her again tomorrow.
''I will see you tomorrow,'' He nodded. Closing the car door, he waved as she drove off. Looking as the car disappeared in the distance, he let out a sigh of relief. He knew that they had a long way to go and he knew that there was no way to know that it was going to be okay.
But for now, he was just so happy to finally have met with her again.
