Immediately, all the firefighters outside came into action as the house collapsed. Although the walls and roof kept standing, they heard the floor collapse.
''Casey!''
There was no answer and the beeping indicated that he wasn't moving.
As they rushed to secure the roof so they could go find him amidst the rubble, Boden grabbed Kelly as he wanted to run inside, clearly upset. Kelly stopped as Boden was calling in other units, upset that Boden had stopped him.
''Kelly, you are too involved, stay here!'' Boden told Kelly, knowing that even though Kelly could be so professional, he knew that Kelly would do well with his best friend trapped inside a collapsed house.
''We gotta call Gabby chief,'' Kelly sained concerned, to unsure to stand still as he jumped from one foot to the other, so scared for what was going to happen. He knew Boden was right and that he was too involved to search in the collapsed house.
''Just wait until we found him Kelly – we don't know in what shape we will find him.''
''You mean – if we even find him alive.''
''She is legally his wife, we will need to call her, but it's better to know what we need to tell her.''
Nodding , Kelly stood there, his stomach hurting as he was worried about Matt. They looked at the firefighters scrambling to secure the building, hoping to find their brother soon.
Gabby sat on the edge of the bed, her phone in her hands as she thought about calling Matt back. She felt guilty about the talk they had just had. She knew deep down inside that he was partly right. Although she had never meant to hurt him by leaving Chicago without him and giving him much of a choice, she knew that he was right by saying that she had left him.
She knew it was something they had to talk about, although everything was unsure between them, she knew that she had to do a lot go gain his trust back.
She really did want them to work.
Jumping up, she called him back, knowing that he might not pick up as he was at work. Soon she ended in his voicemail.
''Hey Matt, I don't feel good about the way we left things….''
Looking out of the window, she just hoped that once she was in Chicago, she could really work things out with him.
''Just call me when you hear this okay? Love you to the moon…''
Kelly weas pacing around a rescue unit arrived from another house. The others were still in the building, careful as it was still instable. They had put up beams to secure the roof and Cruz and Herrmann were making their into the rubble of the basement.
Hearing a baby cry, they finally were alarmed to his location amidst the rubble and the darkness.
Holding onto the baby, they heard his shallow breathing, barely able to look at them, the baby still in his arms as he was pinned under the concrete.
''We found him! He is still alive!'' Herrmann said he walked over to Boden.
''He conscious?''
''Yes, he is pinned under a piece concrete. It is going to be hard to get him out,'' Herrmann said upset.
''Medical helicopter is on the on the way.''
''Alright, I am going to call Gabby!'' Kelly said as he ran back to the truck to grab his phone. Looking at Boden as he called Gabby, he looked at the collapsed house, worried. He looked as Cruz came out of the house, holding the baby in his arms and running to one of the ambos.
Before Kelly could keep on looking, he heard Gabby say her name.
''Hey it's me, Kelly.'' He said nervous, his hand in his hair as now that he had to tell her, he was nervous to say it.
''….what's going on,'' she said concerned, knowing that Matt was on shift, immediately concerned as Kelly was calling her, and not Matt.
''Gabby, Matt had an accident on the job. I don't know how things are between you and I understand if you don't want to come, but it's not looking good-''
The last words only came from his mouth as he looked at the medical helicopter that landed at the end of the street now. Looking as a doctor came out, quickly met up with Herrmann and Cruz, they rushed back inside the house.
''I am coming to Chicago,'' she finally managed to say, ''What happened?''
He could hear her grabbing some stuff together.
''He was getting out of a housefire, the house collapsed, he fell into the basement. He is pinned down there.''
''Okay, I am leaving for the airport – call you when I am there Kelly.''
''Keep you updated Gabby,'' Kelly said, hanging up the phone and grabbing his radio.
''Cruz?''
''Yeah?'' He heard over the radio.
''Tell Matt Gabby loves him, please, she is on her way to Chicago,'' Kelly said as he walked back to Boden and Herrmann.
''He is unconscious.''
In the dark basement, only lit by their flashlights, Cruz sat close to Casey as they were waiting for the piece of concrete that was pinning him down was secured and could be lifted away. Matt's eyes were almost closed as the trauma surgeon checked his blood pressure.
''Matt, I need you to stay with us.'' He said concerned, Casey struggling to stay awake. It became harder to breath, the concrete pressing on his chest.
''Get a trauma team on standby at the hospital for when we fly him in, I think he is bleeding internally,'' the surgeon said as he looked at Cruz, whom had his radio still in hand.
Matt coughed for a second, just shortly before his eyes fell shut again.
''Matt, Gabby is on her way here, she loves you.'' Cruz said, moving closer to Casey. Just for a second, Matt's eyes fluttered open at the sound of his wife's name. Only for his eyes to fall shut again as he found it harder and harder to breathe.
Gabby didn't even look at the meter of her car as she rushed to the airport. She had quickly grabbed a bag before heading into her car and to the airport. Parking the car haphazardly, she jumped out and ran into the airport, straight away to the desk to buy a ticket for a flight to Chicago.
Arriving at the airport, she kept on checking her phone every few seconds, hoping for another message or call from Kelly. These messages and calls where the only lifeline she had to Matt.
At the desk, she immediately asked for a flight to Chicago, only to be told that there was no direct flight leaving today.
''You can get a flight to Miami and change planes there, that is the fastest way to get to Chicago.'' The attendant told her.
''That is fine, I just gotta get to Chicago,'' she said as she took her credit card from her wallet, not caring about the cost of the ticket.
''Okay, the flight to Miami leaves in our, you got 45 minutes to change planes.''
Nodding, she quickly paid and had the tickets printed, running towards the gate. She got through security and to her plane just in time, calling Kelly as she walked into the walkway to get on the plane.
''I am about to board the plane, can you give me an update before we take off?''
''We are still trying to get him out Gabby, the building is unstable. We need to be really careful.''
''Anything change?''
''There is a trauma surgeon with him now. He is very hopeful about getting Matt out soon.''
''Is he stable? How long as he been down there?''
''Yes, he is stable.'' Kelly lied, Matt having lost consciousness multiple times so far and barely hanging on. Even the trauma surgeon had voiced his worries as he was trying to keep Matt stable as they were waiting for the piece of floor to be secured and moved.
''Any word on injuries? Is he talking?''
''Gabby, if I knew I would tell you.'', Kelly said. Although he knew that Matt wasn't conscious and not stable, the last thing he wanted was to tell Gabby when she still had a whole two flights to go.
''Gotta hang up, plane is leaving, talk to you later – please tell him again I love him.''
Kelly rushed over he saw the gurney being lifted out of the house and he rushed over as they pushed it towards the helicopter. He caught a glimpse of Matt, his jacket covering most of his upper body and most of his face covered by the oxygen bag Herrmann was diligently pushing.
His eyes just slightly opened, Kelly came as close as he could as they kept on walking.
''Gabby is on her way, you gotta hang on Matt.'' Kelly managed to saw before the trauma surgeon pushed him back to put the gurney into the helicopter, the blades loudly turning over them.
He wasn't able to do or say anything else before the helicopter flew away.
Landing in Miami, she called Kelly as soon as she got off the plane, rushing to get to her connecting flight to Chicago. Grabbing her bag as tight as she could, she started to run as she only had 45 minutes to make it to her next flight.
As she ran through the airport, she grabbed her phone, calling Kelly.
''I just landed in Miami, please give me an update,'' she panted as she ran.
''He had been airlifted to Lakeshore about an hour ago, he is still in surgery. He is going to be for a while.''
Gabby felt a wave of relief. Although she knew that this didn't mean he was out of the woods, she was just grateful that he had made it out of the building and had been stable enough to go into surgery. Especially if it was a long surgery. It gave some hope that he would pull through. She knew that they wouldn't take him into surgery if they thought he wouldn't.
''Call me as soon as you land in Chicago, okay?'' Kelly asked her.
''Kelly, I've got another three hour flight ahead. I need to know how he is doing.''
''We haven't gotten an update, but the trauma surgeon said that his lungs collapsed and there may be damage to his ribs, pelvis – his blood pressure kept on dropping when he was pinned down there, they are careful because he might be bleeding internally. Other than that, it's too early to tell Gabby.''
''Thank you,'' Gabby said, worries filling her chest as she thought of all the damage this may have done.
''Call me when you land in Chicago, okay – I will jump in my car and come and get you.''
''No – you should stay in the hospital, with him. I will order an uber.''
''Okay, see you when you are here,'' Kelly said as he sat down on the bench in the waiting room, ''take care Gabby, it is going to be okay.''
''Thanks Kelly.''
Her stomach was still hurting as she got on the plane, she sat down in her seat. All she wanted was to arrive in Chicago. She wanted to be hopeful that the fact that he had been taken into surgery was a good sign.
Taking out a notebook, she tried to contain her tears as she wrote down everything Kelly had said.
Writing down everything Kelly had said, she wrote down everything she knew from her training and what she knew it meant for the surgery, as well as for his treatment and recovery.
More and more tears filled her eyes, knowing that this was bad. She had no idea how she would find him when she got to Lakeshore. Closing the book, not wanting to think about what all of these injuries could mean for him, she grabbed her wallet, as there was picture of them together.
Grabbing the picture from her wallet, her thumb caressed over his face on the picture. The picture was one of them at molly's, looking so happy together. The idea that she might never speak to him again, especially after their last talk wasn't a good one.
Scared about him, she realized more and more that no matter what they were going to do, all she wanted was to be with him, the love of her life. Puerto Rico, their near divorce and the difficult talk they had today, it suddenly didn't seem to matter anymore. All she needed was for him to be okay and be with him again.
Hope you are happy with this first chapter after the cliffhanger and still interested in more! Thank you so much for reading and please let me know what you thought of this chapter before leaving!
