"Hey dad?"
"Yeah, son?"
"About Godzilla."
"You worried about whether or not he's passive too, huh?"
"Yeah. I mean if he's that big and fights with other monsters then there's no way he's just a big teddy bear to humanity."
"Mm… Well, we haven't seen him yet so there's really no way to tell about his behavior patterns. But if these parasites are as dangerous to us as I think they are, then we'll see Godzilla soon enough. And we'll get a better idea of how to judge whether or not he's a threat."
"Not really comforting to think about seeing him given what we saw in that power point."
"I know. But we don't have much choice but to watch and wait for now."
"Okay."
The father/son duo continued waiting for their train to the airport as the world went by without a single thought or care to what was waiting in the darkness beyond the scope of the media. MONARCH was keeping the Titans under wraps really well if they'd still not seen anything about a giant flying insectoid like that. But it wouldn't last. Ford knew that, somehow.
After helping Joe into the train, Ford sat down and gripped the rail next to him as it began moving along the track.
"Feels weird, huh?" Ford whispered.
"Hm?"
"Sitting here riding a train knowing what's out there?"
"Oh. Yeah."
Ford noticed a certain distance in his father's tone, and looked around before moving just a tad closer.
"Hey, what's up?" Ford asked.
"Hm?"
"You're zoning out. That's not like you."
"Oh, sorry. I guess I'm just a little overwhelmed is all."
"By the monsters?"
"Mm. That too. Mostly about how they live and function, biologically speaking."
"Why's that?"
"According to the doctors these Titans feed primarily on naturally occurring radiation. Our nuclear reactors and weapons around the world are going to be like super food to them. And if they started going for nuclear reactors around the world to feed we could see entire cities being leveled and rendered uninhabitable."
"Jeez. I didn't think about that."
"The US alone has more than 40 nuclear power plants east of the Mississippi. And we don't know enough about the Titans to determine what feeding on them would do. Would it just cause fallout? Would it increase their power or make them grow larger? Both, perhaps? I should have thought of this before we left so I could've asked Serizawa to explain."
"Damn. Well, no use crying over spilt milk and all that."
"I know."
Suddenly, a massive pulse knocked out all electricity on the train which screeched to a halt. Ford grabbed hold of Joe's wheel chair to make sure it didn't slide away. And the pair shared a glance before looking out the windows.
Silence.
All the lights throughout the city had gone out. Everyone on board the train was murmuring or arguing about what the hell just happened. And Ford felt his stomach drop as he watched the nearby forests along the mountains for any sign of movement. He felt the pulse hit from that direction. So if it was that thing again, he'd see it here first.
Meanwhile, back on the USS Saratoga, Doctor Serizawa stood on the deck watching the island in the distance.
"Sensei?"
He looked at Doctor Graham.
"Admiral Stenz confirmed before the EMP that the creature's been spotted on the island in the mountains. He's calling it a MUTO. Short for massive unidentified terrestrial organism."
"Thank you Vivian."
"Certainly."
"Did it have anything with it?"
"Yes. A Russian nuclear submarine."
He grumbled in response.
"According to the Admiral's satellite footage the creature appears sluggish."
"It must be feeding to regain its stamina after escaping Janjira." He replied.
Power on board the carrier returned, and the radios crackled to life with radio checks. The power on the island seemed to be slowly returning as well. Though so far it only returned to the far side.
"What do we do now, sensei?"
"Now we-…"
Serizawa noticed something strange in the way the ocean was moving. Moving closer to the edge of the deck, he looked towards shore and saw the water level slowly creeping further and further away from the tide markers.
His eyes went wide, and he sprinted to the other side of the deck.
"Sensei?!"
With binoculars up, Serizawa gazed out across the water as his radio crackled to life.
"What the fuck is that?!" Came the voice of a patrol chopper pilot.
"Some kind of giant coral reef is… I shit you not. It's swimming towards shore!" Called another.
"Sensei?"
Serizawa's binoculars came down.
"He's coming."
Doctor Graham looked out to sea following Serizawa's eyes. And she was stunned to see a giant mound of water rising in the distance.
"Oh God." She whispered.
Lights from the patrol choppers shone down into the water illuminating three massive rows of maple leaf shaped spikes slicing their way through the ocean towards the carrier. Alarms began blaring through the vessel along with flashing red lights indicating everyone should get below deck. A fruitless effort given the speed with which the spines were approaching.
"Sensei! We need to go!"
Serizawa remained unmoved. Instead, he stood up straighter and took a deep breath.
"Do not be afraid, Vivian." He said calmly.
"What?"
The spines were about on top of the carrier, and Doctor Graham nearly lost her balance as she moved back and away from them before they slid downward with the ship being lifted up on the wake as the creature swam underneath the carrier. Tilting back and away with the wake, Serizawa turned around and watched as the mound rose dozens of meters with the spines continuing to slice a path through before falling down around a giant reptilian shape he knew all too well.
"Sensei…"
Serizawa smiled with a short, firm nod.
Back on the train, power returned at long last and lit up along the length of the tracks as the train lurched to life and started moving again. But as it did so, Ford happened to glance off to the left towards the woods in time to see a pair of red eyes in the darkness approaching.
"Oh shit." He whispered.
Joe spotted it a moment later, and so too did most of the people on the train with them resulting in complete pandemonium. As the creature stalked closer, the screaming and panicked running about grew more and more intense. Ford could barely even stand up from his seat due to how many people were crowding him. And Joe could forget moving unless he wanted to run over everyone's feet, which he wasn't about to do.
A moment later the sounds of missiles flying through the air caught Ford's ear. Looking outside he saw the missiles via their exhaust trails and afterburners as they flew forward and struck the parasite in the side knocking it to the ground. The creature's screech was ear-splitting. And its flailing arms knocked out part of the track ahead.
"Oh no." Joe whispered.
"Dad! Come on!" Ford yelled.
Ford forced himself to his feet and helped push a path for Joe as they moved further towards the far end of the section they were in right as the creature's flailing arm smashed down onto the front of it, taking it off completely and sending the rest of it down to ground level. Ford grabbed the handle of Joe's wheel chair and held onto the rails as people began sliding down and out of the car to the ground before being crushed as it all then fell on top of them.
The creature righted itself a moment later and looked up towards the skies spotting the planes and growled. Its wings opened wide, and a moment later a massive flap sent the cart tumbling end over end knocking Ford and Joe around. Joe fell out of his wheel chair, but Ford managed to grab his arm and pull him in while holding the rail to keep them as steady as possible.
When it skidded to a halt, the two of them were on the floor of the cart with Joe's wheel chair being damaged nearby. Other people around them were unconscious or dead from the trauma of the tumble. And the creature was flying through the air chasing down the planes.
"It's on my ass!"
"I got it! Bank left!"
The pilot banked as another behind him fired a missile at the MUTO. With swiftness and agility belying its size, the MUTO tucked its left wing and barrel rolled left to avoid the incoming strike while smashing the first plane with its extended wing.
"Shit! On me! Let's get this thing!"
The remaining pilots regrouped in formation and began chasing the MUTO.
"Sierra One, fox two!"
Another missile launched from the lead plane and struck the MUTO's back between the wings.
"Bullseye!"
The MUTO faltered in flight for a moment before beating its wings and ascending rapidly.
"Stay on it!"
"Roger!"
Arcing through the skies and roaring over the building rooftops of the now thoroughly panicked city below, the MUTO and fighter pilots blazed a path of chaos and fear throughout the island of Oahu. The MUTO practically scraped the tops of buildings with its belly as it dove and circled around in an attempt to lose its pursuers. If it wasn't happening right above their heads, most of the island inhabitants would think it was a video game boss battle playing out above their city.
The MUTO suddenly ascended again. And with the fighters hot on its tail, it threw its wings out to the side to stop its ascent almost dead in its tracks. One plane slammed into and crashed against its hide while the others flew past it. With a flap of its wings, it accelerated and began to hunt the hunters.
"Fuck! How'd it do that?!"
"Doesn't matter! We gotta get it off our tail!"
The fighters pulled every maneuver they could possibly think of without endangering the city below. But it wasn't enough. The MUTO stuck to their tails and managed to bite one of the planes right out of the sky. Two more were destroyed as it flew by them at top speed causing them to lose control and spin out before crashing into the city below.
Now alone, Sierra One darted through the skies taking all evasive maneuvers necessary to keep himself alive.
"Saratoga! This is Sierra One! I've lost my squad and the MUTO's right on my ass!"
Silence.
"Saratoga! This is Sierra One! I've lost my squad and the MUTO's on me! Repeat! I've lost my squad and the MUTO's-"
A flash of blue, and a massive beam shot through the air and slammed into the side of the MUTO with pinpoint accuracy. The MUTO screeched in agony as it was propelled through the air away from Sierra One and sent hurtling towards the Earth below.
"What the fuck?!"
Banking hard left, Sierra One froze when he saw the source of the beam he'd just seen. A titanic reptilian with maple leaf shaped spikes along its back, a massively long tail, and a powerfully built frame stomping through the city. It was ankle deep in water which could only mean a tsunami had followed it from the ocean. And sure enough, that was true. The city around was flooded all the way to the still hidden coastline as the water spread throughout the city around the creature.
"Saratoga… This is Sierra One… Respectfully, what the fuck am I looking at?!"
"Sierra One, this is Admiral William Stenz. You are to avoid all contact with the MUTO and Godzilla."
"God-what, sir?"
"Godzilla. That's big lizard's name, Sierra One. Return to the ship, immediately."
"Roger! Sierra One inbound to the Saratoga!"
Banking away, he left the battlefield as Godzilla came to a stop near the airport. Over in the woods, the MUTO rose to its feet with sizzling flesh along its body where the beam had struck.
Godzilla reared his head back and roared with fury splitting the skies with a concussive burst of wind force from his mouth and rattling the city for miles in each direction. Even from their position near the downed train, Ford and Joe felt the tremors of the roar and covered their ears before continuing their effort to escape the area.
The MUTO, meanwhile, growled as the lights within its eyes and along its body began flashing. Godzilla's spines illuminated and started smoking in the cold night air. And the blue light from before gathered in his eyes and mouth. The MUTO raised a claw into the air, and slammed it down into the ground as Godzilla began taking in a deep breath. A new EMP erupted from the claw as it struck the ground.
As the pulse struck Godzilla his eyes opened wider and his mouth slammed shut. Steam escaped his gills, mouth, and spines as he began seemingly coughing and choking with small flares and embers of blue radiation which fell to the ground and disappeared.
The MUTO croaked a growl in Godzilla's direction before flaring its wings and roaring in challenge. Godzilla turned his head, lips curling back in a snarl as he stood fully upright. He reared his head back, and blue light flickered in his spines before he opened his mouth and lurched his head forward. But the only thing which emerged was a puff of blue smoke.
Godzilla snorted a plume of blue steam through his nostrils and roared at the MUTO as it leaped into the air flying directly at him.
Godzilla's right arm came up. The MUTO's claws came up.
And the battle began.
