I don't have a hope in hell
Two women lay on a futon naked, after a night of passion. One of the women caressed her lover's back, gazing into her eyes.
"I love you Nika." She said.
"I love you too Aya." Nika replied.
"How much do you love me?'' Aya asked
"This much" Nika said, spreading her arms wide to show her lover, only for the sheets to fall and reveal her breasts.
"I want to be with you forever" Aya said, before pulling Nika in for a passionate kiss.
Nika lay on her futon thinking about the past, and what had just transpired between her and Aya. She felt betrayed by her ex- girlfriend , and how she threw their relationship down the drain. Aya had forgotten about her and she thought it was time she did the same.
Breakfast was eaten in dead silence. Aki felt the brewing tension in the room. Aya and Nika did not say, a word to each other, not even good morning, the two women even avoided eye contact.
"What's going on between you two?" Aki inquired.
Aya pulled her aside and explained the ordeal.
"She got mad at me in a drunken rage, last night. Then she moved all her stuff out this morning ".
"That's strange, you two have always been close" Aki replied.
"I don't know, what made her act like that" Aya said.
"Are you not feeling well, Nika -Oneesan?".
"I'm okay, I just have a little headache, that's all Shizu-chan. It's nice to know someone cares for me." Nika said, while shooting a glare in Aya's direction when she returned to the dining room with Aki.
"Nika, I would like to talk to you" Said Aya.
"I have nothing to say to you" Nika said, before exiting.

"Nika what's wrong?" Tachibana asked, as the two women sat outside while eating lunch.
"Nothing." Nika said indifferently, before taking another bite of her rice ball.
"Nika I know you, there is definitely something wrong. Please tell me"
"The person I thought, that was in love with me, doesn't love me anymore." Nika said, as a lone tear trickled down her cheek.
"Ah guy trouble huh, is he a client?"
"No, it's not a client " Nika replied.
"I know you won't like me to say this, but you should forget about him and focus more on work. You know you have to forget about having a love life when you become a geisha."
"You're right Tachibana, I should focus more on work." Nika said, trying to hold her tears back.
"Now that's the spirit." Tachibana replied. Taking her handkerchief to wipe Nika's tear stained cheeks.

"Isn't he cute!" Mother gushed while holding a furry white kitten.
"Mother we have fishes in our backyard, I don't think it's wise to keep a cat."
Aki replied.
"How can you reject such a cute little face? Don't worry he will be an indoor cat." Mother replied.
"Mother where did you find this kitten?"
"I picked him up on the street, the poor thing was all alone." Mother said, while filling a bowl of food for the kitten, which it ate greedily.
"Please, keep him away from the koi."
"Frosty-kun, don't go near the koi pond okay?" Mother said, picking up the kitten and turning him to face her.
"Yes Sadako-sama, I will not go near the koi pond. I don't want to upset Aki-sama and Shizu-chan. Kitten's honor." Mother joked,while she raised the cat's paw.

"Ah what a nice bath." Said Shizuma, while sitting in the bath tub with Miyuki.
"Do you have to work tonight?" asked Miyuki.
"Yeah." Shizuma replied.
"Mother told me, when I become a minarai, she will let my parents come visit me. I miss them so much"
"Is that why I found you crying last night? I know we all get home sick Miyuki, but you have to be strong to survive in a place like this." Shizuma scolded.
"Will mother let your parents visit any time soon?" inquired Miyuki
"My parents are dead." Shizuma replied in a somber tone.
"I'm sorry."
"It's ok. You did not know."
"I can't believe you got all those gifts for your misedashi, I can't wait until mine starts." Miyuki said trying to change the subject.
"My favorite is this gorgeous white kimono with large purple fans on it that Konda-san gave me. Oh, and the obi is so beautiful. It has red rectangles on it with white roses. I'm going to wear it tonight. "Shizuma boasted.
"I'm so jealous, I want to wear fancy kimonos and get paid go to tea houses."
"Oh, there's more to it than that." Shizuma giggled.

"Utamaro, wants to meet Shizuma!" Aki gasped.
"Yes" replied mother
"Why?"
"What else He wants to draw her, in one of his Ukiyo-e paintings. You should know more, than anyone he had already featured you several times in his Bijin-ga series. That girl is something, she just became came a maiko and she's already getting attention of an artist."
"My little sister." Aki smirked.
"It's all thanks to your hard work and reputation." Mother smiled.

"It's nice to meet you Himeka. When I saw you on the first day of your misedashi, dressed in that beautiful black kimono. I just had to draw you, you looked so elegant. I would really like to feature you in my Bijin-ga series. I have previously drawn pictures of your older sister and it would be an honor to draw you as well." Utamaro asked.
"Yes, I would love to be featured in the series." Shizuma replied.
"Now, I want you to sit right at the front and face me." Utamaro said, as he took out his art supplies.
Shizuma sat at the front of the, room with her kimono sleeves resting upon her lap, as Utamaro began to draw. Aki watched in awe as he painted in the designs on Shizuma's kimono. Making sure not to miss a single detail; when the artist was done he showed the picture to Shizuma.
"I love it Utamaro-san."
"I'm very glad that you do. I would like to draw one featuring the both of you next time."
"I look forward to it, Utamaro-san" Shizuma replied.
"Thank you for a wonderful night." Utamaro said, before leaving.

The next clients on Aki and Shizuma's list to visit, were Adachi and Daisuke. Inside Nika played music and sang as Aya and Tachibana danced. The two men were so engrossed in the performance, that they did not notice Aki and Shizuma had entered. Daisuke and Adachi sang along and clapped their hands to the rhythm.
"Hello, Himeyuki and Himeka." Adachi whispered, finally noticing the two as they sat down.
When the song was over, Adachi introduced Shizuma to Daisuke.
"This is Himeyuki's younger sister Himeka, that I was telling you about."
"Nice to meet you Himeka." Daisuke said.
"Please take care of me" Shizuma replied.
"Just as sweet as her big sister" said Daisuke, as Nika, sat down next to him before pouring sake into his cup.
"But, not as sweet as my Yatsuha; she always knows what I want." Daisuke said, while stroking Nika's back.
"Your Yatsuha, are you planning on becoming her Danna Daisuke? asked Aki.
"Danna? No, I want Yatsuha to be my wife." Daisuke replied, making Aya almost choke on her sake.
"Oh, don't worry Tamakichi, I'll invite you to the wedding. Since you two are best friends." replied Daisuke.
"Thank you, Daisuke-san" Aya replied
"Aren't you already married Daisuke?" Adachi interrupted.
"Well, a man can dream." Daisuke giggled.
"Daisuke-sama, I'm flattered that you would want me to be your wife, but as you know I am married to my work." Nika replied.
"Poor, Daisuke rejected by his favorite geisha." Adachi teased.
"Poor Himeka, must be bored listening to all this." joked Daisuke.
"Oh no, I'm not bored at all Daisuke-san, it's quite interesting." Shizuma smiled.
"Shall we play a game Himeka? "asked Daisuke trying to change the subject.
"What kind of game do you have in mind?"
"I'll let you choose Himeka-san."
"I would like to play, Tosenkyo."
Everyone helped set up the room for the game. Shizuma sat in the middle since she was picked to be the referee, while Aki sat in the middle across from Shizuma with Adachi sitting on the left side and Daisuke on the right.
"The rules of are simple each of you will try to knock the target down with your fans, the person that scores the highest points after 10 turns wins." Shizuma explained, while holding a royal blue fan shaped figurine, with golden butterfly decoration on the side, which she placed on a pedestal.
"When I say rei, the game will begin. Himeyuki- Oneesan could you please, give them their fans."
"Hai" Aki replied handing some fans to Daisuke and Adachi.
"Good luck, Daisuke-sama" Nika cheered.
"For this round Adachi-san will go first." Shizuma informed the group.
"Everyone understood?"
"Hai" the two men replied giving her a nod.
"Rei!"
Adachi held his fan balancing it on his thumb and pointer finger, as he studied the distance.
"Oh, come on! Hurry up! By the time you toss that thing, I'll be an old man!" Daisuke complained.
Adachi ignored him, and just continued to stare at his target, until he gently released his fan knocking it down.
"Yugiri 5 points" Shizuma said, tallying Adachi's score.
"Now, it's Daisuke's turn" instructed Shizuma.
Daisuke held the fan then threw it, only to not even come close to the target.
"You call that a throw?" said Adachi.
"Tenarai o points."
Adachi took his time again, anticipating the distance, then throwing the fan, knocking the target once again.
"Musugumo 8 points."
It was Daisuke's turn again. He tried hitting the target for the second time only to do worse than before with his fan flying over the target.
"By the time Daisuke gets a hit, everyone in this room would be old." Adachi joked.
Which caused everyone in the room to laugh.
"Yatsuha, you're laughing at me too?"
"I'm sorry Daisuke-sama, but what Adachi-san said was very funny."
"Don't get mad at Yatsuha, it's not her fault you can't play." Adachi laughed.
"You're going down, you watch and see!" Daisuke shot back.
The game went on with, Daisuke not scoring a single point for five rounds. The two men then switched places and began tossing fans again. This time Daisuke went first only to miss the target yet again.
"You said, just watch and see and yet I see nothing, but your failure." Adachi said belittling the samurai.
It was Adachi's turn, he knocked the target down, with the fan touching both the target and the pedestal, which gained him a hundred points.
It was Daisuke turn once again. This time he was extremely nervous. His hands were clammy and shaky as he held the fan; frustrated he threw his fan, this time hitting the target but failing to knock it over.
"He doesn't have any points for me to deduct" Said Shizuma
"Just give him another zero. That's what happens when you're always in such a hurry to do things. You can barely hit the target, I hope that you aren't like this when it comes to pleasure."
"I hope you are not saying, what I think you're saying."
"And what if I am?"
"Let's take this outside right now! You may be my older brother, but that won't stop me from kicking your ass" said Daisuke, pulling out his sword from it's brown casing and pointing it straight at Adachi. Which caused the silver-haired girl's body to go stiff as a statue.
"Don't start, what you can't finish Daisuke." Adachi warned.
"Gentlemen, please don't do this" Aki pleaded.
"I'll send you flying through the wall.
"Well, then pick a wall Daisuke, pick a wall." Adachi said, sitting cool as a cucumber with a smile across his face.
"Please don't fight, it's just game. Please don't Daisuke-sama "Nika cried out.
"Fine. I won't fight." Daisuke said, sitting back down with his arms folded.
"It's childish to get mad over a game." muttered Adachi.
"Look, I have put up with your belittling, but that was hitting below the waist."
"Gomen gomen." Adachi said, tossing the fan and scoring eight more points.
"Adachi scores 121 points, and Daisuke with zero points. Adachi wins the game."
"Don't feel down, Daisuke-sama you tried your best. We all can't be good at everything. Tachibana is a better dancer than I am, but I have never gotten the urge to kill her because of it."
"I wasn't going to kill my brother over a game, I was just gonna to kick his ass."
"You shouldn't be mad at me, you should be mad at yourself and you scared poor Himeka-chan when you pulled out your sword."
"I didn't mean to scare you Himeka." Daisuke apologized.
I'm just glad he's not mad at me, I felt like started a war.

When Aki, Aya and Shizuma returned home late that night, they were exhausted. Luckily for them Miyuki was there to help.
"Where is Nika?" asked Aki
"She said, she had another engagement and won't be returning home any time soon.'' Aya said, while searching the room for something.
"What's the matter?"
"I think I left my purse at the tea house, I'll go back to go look for it." She said, before rushing back to the tea house.

Aya searched several rooms, but she could not find it. So, she asked the Okaa-san if she had seen it.
"It's a red purse" Aya proclaimed.
"Ah, you are the owner of that red purse. I kept it in my room, for safe keeping." She said, returning the purse to its rightful owner.
"Thank you, Okaa-san." Aya bowed.

Aya decided to go to the basement since she had a late-night craving for sweet sake. As Aya reached the last step, she heard strange noises. Her heart began to race, and a cold sweat ran down her back.

There is no way a mouse could make such a sound.
Burning with curiosity Aya, used her lantern to search for the source. That's when she saw two figures in the distance. She crept closer to get a better view. Then she froze, when she heard one of the figures cry out.

"I won't say a thing. What you two do is of no concern to me." Aya said, walking away.

Sitting in the bathtub Nika stared at Aya, trying to figure out what was on her mind. Aya seemed unbothered, by what had taken place. They were all alone in the bath house, which made Nika feel uneasy. Could she be upset? Nika just wanted to know, so she decided to break the ice.
"You're not going to say anything right?" Nika interrogated Aya.
"I told you I won't say a word. What the hell were you thinking? Having sex in the basement. You could have been caught." Aya scolded.
"I can have sex, where ever I damn well please. It isn't any of your business " Nika prattled.
"Are you selling your body?"
"No, I'm not having sex with him for money. Daisuke and I were just having fun." Nika replied, despite being annoyed at Aya's question.
Who does she think I am? I don't need to sell my body for money.
"Fun huh? I don't understand what you see in him. I know you're bisexual, but ..."
"What's the matter Aya, are you Jealous?" Nika said, her lips forming a devilish smile.

"Nika you are going down a slippery slope, I can't just stand by and watch you fall and disgrace yourself".

"That concludes the lesson for today; make to practice when you go home."

Aki greeted Shizuma as soon as she stepped out of the room.
"How was class?" she asked
"a … it was okay" Shizuma replied indifferently.
"That response tells me a different story."
"I don't like drums."
"I see. How about we go home and grab a bite to eat before work. "said Aki.
"Sure. Neesan where is Miyuki?" Shizuma said, looking around.
"She went home early with Nika."
"I see."

"Mother have you decided, who will be Miyuki's mentor?" Aya asked, sitting across from her mother in the living room.
"I think Nika will make a fine choice." Sadako replied.
"Mother, I don't think Nika will make a good choice. I think you should choose someone else."
"Is there something I don't know about Nika, that would make her a bad choice?" Sadako said, turning to face her daughter, resting her pipe down.
"No mother that's not it. I just think Miyuki should be placed with someone more skilled."
"And who might that be?" mother asked with a sly grin sailing across her face.
"Me"
"I will give it some thought." Mother said waving her daughter away, so she could be left to smoke her pipe in peace.

"Not only are you heartless, you're a backstabber too!" Nika roared.
"Look Nika … I'm just" Aya said, trying clam her down.
"You of all people knew, how much I wanted a younger sister and now you want to take it all away from me. Haven't you done enough?" Nika bellowed.
"Let's go somewhere more private to talk about this " Aya said, pulling Nika's arm.
"I'm not a child. Just lead the way." Nika snapped.
They both entered Aya's bedroom, Aya checked to see if anyone one was around before shutting the door.
"Nika, I'm worried about you. Your drinking has gotten worse and then you are having sex in the tea house basement. I don't think it's fair for Miyuki to be exposed to that."
"So, you think that I'll be a bad influence."
"I just don't want Miyuki to pick up your bad habits."
"You don't think I can do it can you?" Nika said, glaring at Aya.
"Nika you are a talented geisha, but if you really want to have a little sister you need to change your ways."
"You act like drinking, and sex is such a bad thing. No one judges anyone for having a little fun."
"Maybe you should pick better places to have fun."
"Maybe, you should mind your own business and stop sticking your nose in mine."
Nika said brushing Aya aside.

Tensions were high again; the two women have not spoken to each other since their argument. Aya was too scared, to say anything to Nika, fearing that she might make things worse. Shizuma looked at the two strangely, trying to figure out what was going on.
"Is something the matter Shizu-chan?" Nika asked.
"No nothing at all. "
"I can ask you two the same question." Aki replied, before placing her chopsticks back into her bowl.
Aki please don't make stuff worse, Nika hates me right now.
"What do you mean by that?" Nika inquired.
"Oh nothing." Aki said, while using her chopsticks to play with her food.

"Mother what is it that, is so important that you had to call me down here in the middle of getting dressed?'' Aki asked.
"A little bird told me that a certain someone's portrait had become quite popular." Mother said, before puffing on her pipe.
"You mean Shizuma's?"
"You were right about that girl."
"you don't mean…" Aki's gasped surprised "No, so soon?"
"Shizuma has become quite popular, it's all thanks to your hard work, I have so many requests for her. I am going to cash in on my investments."
"Who are these clients?"
"Most of them are your regulars, but a few are new, here are the lists of clients you all have to visit." Mother said, giving it to Aki.
Aki smirked as she scanned it.
"I almost forgot Utamaro gave me a copy of Shizuma's picture, he said she should have it." Mother said smiling back at Aki.

Aki and Shizuma entered the room to visit their client. She was surprised to see, the little girl, that gave her a flower on her first day of her misedashi. The girl's eyes sparkled, when she saw Shizuma enter the room.
"She's here mother!" The little girl cheered.
Aki, and Shizuma both greeted their clients.
"My little, Hana just couldn't forget about you. She insisted on meeting you maiko Himeka." The mother replied.
"I'm honored that you remembered me." Shizuma replied.
"Of course, I would remember you Oneesan, you are so beautiful."
"Thank you, Hana-chan." Shizuma replied, smiling at the little girl.
"Your make up is so pretty."
"My big sister Himeyuki did for me." Shizuma said to Hana as She looked in Aki's direction who was chatting with Hana's mother.
"Your older sister is just as pretty as you are nee-san." The little girl smiled
"If you keep buttering me up like that Hana-chan, I will just have to spoil you." Shizuma giggled.
"If you're going to spoil me, please spoil me with a game."
"Do you have one in mind?" Shizuma asked.

"No everything is fine." Aya said, while wiping up the spilled sake.

"Me too, I'm sorry for being distracted Ryu-san."
"No, it's fine. "
Frosty is not sick, Aya is such a liar. She only got distracted because Daisuke-sama said he wanted to be my Danna.
"Nika will you join me later?" Daisuke whispered into Nika's ear.
"As long as it's not in the basement." Nika whispered back.
"Don't worry I found a better place." Daisuke replied.
"Just wait for me after work at the Kasama tea house, that's the last place I have to visit for the night." Nika replied.

After stepping out of the tea house, Nika bowed to the Okaa-san and wished her a good night. Before meeting with Daisuke who was waiting for her outside.
"Where shall we be going?" She asked.
"Let's go to the inn up the street, we won't be interrupted there." He replied.
"I'll get a change of clothes and clean up, then meet up with you there."
Nika rushed home and then raced to the bath house, where she cleaned up, removed her makeup, and changed into a black and white striped kimono, with a plain black sash then headed out to meet Daisuke.
"I almost got worried that you wouldn't come".
"Daisuke-sama, you seem to be in such a hurry. Don't worry, you will get it soon enough." Nika flirted causing the samurai's cheeks to turn bright red.
They held hands as they entered the inn, inside there was a woman who sat at a desk.
"We would like a room, please." Said Daisuke
"That would be three ryo please." The woman said holding out her hand.
Daisuke reached into his pocket and gave the woman three large golden coins.
"Right this way." the woman said, directing the couple to their room.
As soon as the lovers were alone, they kissed each other passionately. Nika began untying Daisuke's sash, as they inched their way to a large futon. She quickly

A/N Tosenkyo was a popular game during the Edo period invented by a gambler in Kyoto named Kisen who was trying to take a nap but a butterfly kept bothering him. He used his fan to hit it each time but it would escape causing his fan to land in different positions. This reminded him of an old Chinese game played with arrows used to hit targets so he made the rules for this game . The points of the game is based on The tale of Genji chapters .
