-The Ninth Child-
xX-A Fallen Friend-Xx
-Hamasaki Academy; Computer Lab-
"Time for a snack!" DemiVeemon grinned, opening his mouth wide.
Summer vacation was slowly coming to an end, but the school was still left open for remedial lessons, clubs and the faculty. The group had just gotten back from the Digital World after having destroyed another of the Digimon Emperor's Control Spires.
"Is that all you can think about?" Kari asked, giggling.
Kari wore a light-pink v-neck tank top with three magenta diamonds printed below the neckline, a pair of magenta shorts with a dark-brown belt around the waist, and a pair of white sneakers with yellow accents paired with a pair of white ankle socks.
She wore a watch around her left wrist, a bracelet around her right, and a yellow bandana around her neck. Her hair was still clipped to one side with a single red barrette.
The~Ninth~Child
T.K wore a green T-shirt underneath a khaki sleeveless shirt with the zipper down to a little past his collarbone, a pair of olive shorts, and navy ankle socks paired with beige-hued shoes with black accents.
He wore a brown-band watch around his left wrist while his usual white bucket hat sat atop his head.
The~Ninth~Child
Davis wore a navy short-sleeved shirt that had a one thick white stripe running across the chest, a blue vest left open, dark-brown shorts with a black belt, and a pair of black sock with white senacks that had red accents.
A tennis wristband was wrapped around one wrist while a watch and a few loose bracelets hung on the other. The goggles gifted from Tai sat snugly in his hair.
The~Ninth~Child
Yolei wore a lime-green T-shirt with some kind of design on it, a pair of jeans capris, and a pair of olive-green socks paired with purple and navy sneakers.
She wore a red beret on her head and a lime-green wristwatch n her left wrist. Her hair was left down.
The~Ninth~Child
Cody wore a beige T-shirt with a tiny design or two done in orange around and just below the neckline, a pair of kahaki pants, and a pair of beige shoes.
The~Ninth~Child
Kagome wore a pale-blue off-shoulder shirt that had somewhat bohemian pattern with a white camisole underneath, a pair of short darkwash denim shorts with a black belt and a small chain hanging off the side with a few charms dangling from it, and a pair of knee-high peep-toe boots with a two-inch heel that laced up the front.
She wore a pair of white wrist-length fingerless gloves, and half her hair was pulled back into a messy bun with the rest left down.
"What?" DemiVeemon blinked. "Traveling between the Digital World and this one works up a real appetite!"
"Well, we do deserve to celebrate a little after our latest victory," T.K grinned.
"Hey, there's a rad new pizza joint down by the beach!" Yolei exclaimed. "Why don't we go there?"
"Half anchovies and half mustard'll hit the spot!" Davis rubbed his hands together gleefully.
"Gross!" the rest of the group made faces at the maroon-haired boy.
"Cody?" Kagome looked concernedly at the young boy. "Is everything all right?"
"It's nothing," Cody answered before sighing. "It's just that, I don't think we should celebrate when we don't know what the Digimon Emperor's up to…"
"He brings up a good point," Kagome nodded.
"Maybe we should hold off on the celebrations until we can figure out what we should do next," T.K agreed.
"Oh come on, T.K!" Davis pleaded. "You know we can't fight him on an empty stomach!"
"But starting tomorrow," Kagome reminded them, "we probably won't be able to use this room."
"Huh?" Yolei looked clueless. "Why not?"
"That's right," Kari piped up, "The detention room's been moved so starting tomorrow, all detentions are in this room."
"All the bad kids'll be in the computer lab!" T.K snickered.
"Hey!" Davis said indignantly. "We're not all bad!"
"We never said anything about you, now did we, Davis?" Yolei commented slyly.
"Besides, we won't be able to go tomorrow anyway," Kagome spoke up, "T.K, Kari, and I, that is."
"Why not?" Cody asked.
"Oh yeah!" T.K nodded excitedly. "We've got plans tomorrow!"
"Y-You mean l-like a date?!" the maroon-haired boy burst out.
A nearly imperceptible flush spread across T.K and Kari's cheeks. "No, it's nothing like that!" the brown-haired girl shook her head.
"And it wouldn't be much of a date if I were there anyway, now would it?" Kagome added. 'Interesting…looks like someone's been keeping secrets…'
Kari took out her agenda book and showed tomorrow's date to Davis. "So you have a date to do fractions? That's it?" he scratched his head confusedly.
The group looked at the maroon-haired boy incredulously for a moment before bursting into laughter. Davis and DemiVeemon only looked at the group, clueless, not understanding what was so funny.
"No, that's a date, not a fraction, Davis," Kagome chuckled, "Tomorrow's the four-year anniversary of the day the DigiDestined defeated Myotismon."
"And Davis thought it was a fraction!" Cody wheezed.
"Well, how was I supposed to know they started putting math in calendars?" Davis muttered.
"Then why don't you come with us," Kari suggested. "In fact, why don't you all join us?"
"On your date?" Davis eyed the blonde and his crush.
"For the last time, Davis," T.K sighed exasperatedly, "It's not a date!"
The~Ninth~Child
"You two have been keeping something," Kagome sang softly as they all walked out of the Computer Lab. The raven-haired teen hung back with her sister and her young blonde friend, watching them with a glint in her eyes.
"N-No we haven't," Kari giggled nervously, "Right T.K?"
"Y-Yeah," the blonde stuttered, "What gave you t-that idea?"
"The fact that you two blushed when Davis mentioned that tomorrow could have been a date for the both of you," Kagome said cheerfully. "And it doesn't hurt that there's physical proof in your hand holding~!
The duo looked down at their clasped hands and blushed; it seemed that they must have done it unconsciously.
Gatomon and Patamon just looked at each other with a small smile.
"Is it safe to say that you're going our now?" the raven-haired teen asked.
"W-We're kinda just p-playing it by ear right now," T.K flushed, "So it's not really official or anything right now…"
"And I suppose you don't want anyone to know?" Kudamon asked.
The duo just nodded, faces flushed heavily by now
"Whatever the case," Kagome smiled at the two, "I'm happy for you; but I do have something to say to you, T.K. "She looked at the young blonde who stiffened at her words. "Hurt my little sister in any way and it won't be just me you'll answer to, understand?"
"Y-Yes Ma'am!" T.K yelped as Kari hid a smile behind her hand.
-The Next Day; Kamiya Residence-
"Mimi!" Kagome smiled.
"Kagome!" the caramel-haired girl squealed as the two girls tackled each other into a tight embrace. "Oh I missed you so much!"
The~Ninth~Child
Mimi wore a pale-pink strapless dress that flowed down to about mid-thigh, a pair of brown knee-high boots with a two-inch heel, and her signature pink cowboy hat over her caramel hair that was left down.
The~Ninth~Child
"Not as much as I missed you!" Kagome denied.
"Not that I'm not happy to see you, Mimi," Tai spoke up from behind his sister, watching the proceedings with a lopsided grin, "But what are you doing here? Weren't we all supposed to meet up in front of the school so we could all walk to the park together?"
The~Ninth~Child
Tai was wearing a navy T-shirt that had a yellow logo with pale-brown shorts, a yellow tennis band around each wrist, and a pair of light-blue socks paired with white sneakers with dark-blue accents.
The~Ninth~Child
"Yeah," Mimi nodded, "But I couldn't wait to see Kagome so I rushed over here as fast I could so we could go together!" She blinked. "Speaking of going together, where's Kari?"
"Kari went on ahead with T.K to meet Yolei, Davis and Cody," Kudamon spoke up from inside Kagome's messenger bag.
"Really?" the caramel-haired girl tilted her head. "Oh well! Let's get going!" She linked arms with the raven-haired girl and with that, the trio and one Digimon headed off.
'They're awfully close…' Tai stared at his sister as she talked and giggled with Mimi, Kudamon giving his input now and then, 'I wonder when that happened?'
The~Ninth~Child
-Hamasaki Acadmey-
"Kagome! Tai! Mimi!" Joe called out, waving to the trio "Hey!"
"Hey guys!" Tai grinned, watching as Sora, Matt and Izzy came up to them.
Matt wore a black short-sleeved button-down with a pair of navy pants and black shoes. On his left wrist was a black-band wristwatch.
The~Ninth~Child
Joe wore a dark-blue short-sleeved button-down with Khaki pants and black sandals.
The~Ninth~Child
Sora wore a magenta T-shirt with an orange logo, a short red skirt, and a pair of white ankle sock with magenta and white sneakers.
The~Ninth~Child
Izzy wore a red and orange striped tank top underneath an open green button-down, a pair of dark-brown shorts, and dark-brown sandals on his feet.
"So you guys ready to go?" Matt asked when they'd gotten their greetings out of the way.
"As ready as we'll ever be!" Sora nodded with a smile.
And with that said, the group of seven took off for the park, chatting amongst themselves.
"Hey, Kagome," Mimi said slyly, "Where're those picture you promised to show me?"
'Curse you Mimi!' "Um, what pictures?" the raven-haired teen asked, her gaze shifting around their surroundings.
"Yeah, what pictures, Kagome?" Tai asked, genuinely curious.
"What pictures?" Kagome said nervously. "There aren't any pictures!"
"Oh come on, whatever they're about, they couldn't be that bad," Joe placed a hand on her shoulder as he tried reasoning with the girl he considered a younger sibling.
"Oh they definitely aren't; even if I haven't seen them yet…" Mimi agreed, "Anyway, they're from Kagome's little trip to Kyoto!"
"Kyoto?" Matt blinked. "Wasn't that a while back? For your Archery Tournament?"
"You took pictures and you didn't bothering sharing?" Tai looked at his sister. "Wait a second, you didn't do something you weren't supposed to did you?"
"What? NO!" Kagome said immediately. "You know I'm not that kind of person! No, we had a day where we had no tournaments or training, so we were allowed to go out around the city. I took pictures of a few places—"
"And she played dress up, too!" Mimi squealed.
"Kagome? Dress up?" Sora stared at the raven-haired teen like she was a gorilla in a pink tutu. "Are you sure you're talking about the right person, Mimi? You know that Kagome doesn't like going all out with clothes and makeup."
"Well of course I am!" Mimi sniffed. "You know how there's a lot of shops and boutiques where any person can dress up like a Geisha or a samurai or something? Well, one of Kagome's teammates dragged her and two others into one down in Gion where they all got to dress up!"
"Is that all?" Izzy asked amusedly. "That's nothing to be embarrassed about! I'm sure you looked wonderful!"
"That's not the problem!" Kagome huffed. "I was pushed around by squealing women that did nothing but comment on how 'adorable' I was before doing me up like I was some—some doll!"
"Oh come on, Kagome!" Mimi begged. "Pretty please?" she flashed puppy dog eyes at the raven-haired girl, much to the amusement of the rest of the group.
"You know that won't work on me," Kagome closed her eyes, peeking one open at her friend.
Mimi looked at the raven-haired teen for a moment before a mischievous glint shone in her eyes. "How about you show the pictures and we'll go out for a lunch date before I leave at that Oden place you're always talking about?"
'Oden?' Kagome perked up at the sound of her favourite food. 'What to do? Potentially embarrass myself in front of my brothers and friends while getting a delicious meal out of it? Or not embarrass myself and lose my chance at a dream meal? Oh to heck with it! I want that Oden!'
"Deal," Kagome sighed. She fished out her cellphone from her bag and started swiping through and tapping until she found the pictures she was looking for. Hesitating for only a second, she finally handed over the phone to a bouncing Mimi.
The caramel-haired girl cooed at the group and pair shots Kagome had taken with her teammates. "I don't see why you were so embarrassed! You look absolutely radiant!"
"She's right," Joe nodded as he and the others looked at the photos over Mimi's shoulder, "There wasn't any need to be shy about these."
"I know Mom, Dad, and Kari'll love seeing these," Tai added. 'Except dad might start howling about how his daughter's growing up and how he won't lose her to some 'wolf'…'
"Oh…" Mimi breathed out, "Oh Kagome, this one is absolutely stunning!"
"I'll say," Sora nodded.
The photo in question was a solo shot of Kagome, who appeared to have been caught in mid-pose, her kimono and hair whirling around her, her fan accenting the scene with the makeup giving Kagome the raven-haired girl in the photo a mysterious air to her.
"That was an accident," Kagome chuckled, taking back her phone from Mimi, "They couldn't figure out how they wanted me to pose for the photo without making it look all scripted or something so Mrs. Yui just kept telling me to try out different poses while fiddling around with her camera. I think her finger slipped or something, 'cause the next thing I know, this was the picture that came out from that whole scenario."
The raven-haired girl stilfed a gasp when she felt a shiver travel up her spine. An image of the TV Station flashed through her mind as did an image of a very familiar Digimon. 'What the—What could this mean?'
No one noticed, but Matt hadn't said a word through the entire viewing, save for his comment before Kagome gave in. 'I never knew she could look like that…' the blonde thought, the final image flashing through his mind.
Had he been paying attention, he'd have noticed the shy glance Sora had thrown at him, a very faint flush streaking her cheeks.
-Park Near Fuji TV Station-
(AN: I've tried researching the geography of Odaiba to help with the real-world reference, but to no avail, at least for this instance. All I know is that the Fuji TV Studios gives a good view across Tokyo Bay and is near a giant Ferris Wheel. I couldn't really find any more about the area around the actual building.)
"Hey!" Tai waved to the his sister and her friends when they came to the park near the Fuji TV Station. "Happy anniversary guys!"
The new DigiDestined came over with T.K and Kari to say their hellos.
"What a reunion," Joe whistled.
"I'll say," Sora nodded, "It's been a while since everyone's been together."
"Especially since I've been away…" Mimi trailed off.
"It's not your fault and we understand that you didn't have any control over the situation when your parents decided to move," Joe smiled down at the caramel-haired girl.
"Thanks, Joe," Mimi smiled softly, effectively stopping a blush from having made its way to her face.
"You know," T.K commented, "I think we have enough people here to start our own soccer team!"
Everyone, including the young blonde, burst out into laughs at the comment.
"So storytime, anyone?" Kagome suggested.
The~Ninth~Child
"So you see," Tai spoke, "Not all of the corrupted Digimon we came across we really ever even bad. They were just under the influence of Devimon's evil Black Gears."
"Eventually," Sora picked up, "We found out that we could destroy the gears with our Digivices and free the Digimon from that awful spell! And before we knew it, they became our friends and in the end helped us defeat the four Dark Masters."
"Man," Davis commented, "Those Dark Masters sound like my math teacher!"
"You could make a movie or a book out of this story!" Yolei exclaimed.
"You guys need to stick together no matter what," Tai told the new DigiDestined, "Remember that friendship is the key, or you're all toast!"
Cody stayed silently for a moment. "Hey, Kagome?"
"Yes, Cody?" the raven-haired girl looked at the younger boy.
"When did you and Kari join Tai and the others?" the young boy asked. "I mean, it sounds like it was only Tai, Sora, Joe, Matt, Izzy, and Mimi at first."
"That's because it was," Mimi answered. "When we came back home during the whole Myotismon bit, we were told to find the Eighth DigiDestined. It wasn't until after we got another message from Gennai did we find out that there was a Ninth as well."
"We actually found Kagome and Kari together," Matt added, "Back when everyone in town was herded off to the Community Centre, Kagome, Kari and I hid out in a warehouse down in Aqua City. I couldn't believe it at first; that the last two DigiDestined we were looking for were right under our noses and we never suspected a thing!"
The~Ninth~Child
"That was an incredible story," Cody said as they all stood watching the sunset. "I'll admit, I'm kind of afraid that we won't be able to live up to the achievements of you original DigiDestined."
"You wouldn't have been chosen if you couldn't handle it," Kagome pointed out.
"What she said!" Davis struck a pose. "I'm ready to fight! Bring it on!"
"You're so brave, Davis," Sora commented sarcastically.
"Tai," Kagome whispered, "Can you ask Matt, Joe, Sora, Mimi, Kari, Izzy, and T.K to stay behind when Yolei, Davis, and Cody head on home?"
"Is something the matter? Is it another vision?" her older brother asked. "Then shouldn't we have Davis and the others listen?"
"I think they'll find out sooner or later," Kagome shook her head. "But there's a reason why I want you all to stay behind."
The brown-haired teen looked at his sister long and hard before eventually giving a single nod.
The~Ninth~Child
"Bye! See you tomorrow!" Davis called, waving back as he, Cody, and Yolei walked home.
"See ya!" Tai called back.
"So what's up?" Matt asked.
"I think you should ask Kagome," Tai told him, "She's had another vision."
"Then shouldn't Davis and the others hear about it, too?" T.K asked.
"They should find out soon enough," Kagome replied. 'But that's not the reason why I wanted you all to stay behind."
"Then why?" Kari asked.
"Wizardmon," was all the raven-haired girl said.
"W-What?" Gatomon's eyes widened. "What about him? He's g-gone, remember?"
"That's what I thought so, too," Kagome nodded. "But I saw Wizardmon in my vision," she cut across Tai when he tried speaking, "And it was our Wizardmon; I don't know how, but it was him."
"Did you see anything else?" Izzy asked.
"Just the TV Station," Kagome answered, "But that's all."
Everyone fell silent at the news.
"For now, we should be on our guard," Joe suggested, "Kagome's vision never steered us wrong before and they wouldn't now."
"Right," the group nodded in unison.
-The Next Day; Aqua City Shopping Centre-
"This place really does bring back memories, doesn't it?" Kagome asked.
"It was the first time I Digivolved to Chirinmon," Kudamon nodded, "It was also the first time your Crest reacted. I remember that Your brother and everyone else's Crests, not including Kari's, reacted a while after they got them. But you…your Crest reacted quite quickly compared to them."
"Is that supposed to be a compliment?" Kagome sweat-dropped.
"Are you still worried about eh vision you had?" Kudamon asked after a while.
"I just don't know what it could mean," Kagome sighed, "Wizardmon is gone and has been for four years now. Why am I just suddenly getting a vision of him now? And around the time of Myotismon's defeat at that?"
"And coincidentally enough," Kudamon's eyes narrowed, "it's come when during the Digimon Emperor's reign of terror of the Digital World."
"I guess we'll find out soon," Kagome said quietly, "C'mon, we're supposed to meet up with the rest of the gang at the TV Station."
The~Ninth~Child
-Fuji TV Station-
"Whoa," Davis said in awe, watching a dark cloud swirl into existence above the TV Station, "What the heck is that?!"
"It just came out of nowhere!" Kari gaped, holding a neatly wrapped bouquet of roses.
"It figures," T.K commented, "You can't trust weathermen nowadays to give a correct prediction!"
Suddenly a strong bolt of lightning crashed into the TV Station, thunder creating a huge crashing noise in the process.
"This isn't an ordinary cloud," Izzy observed with narrowed eyes.
Kagome's figure suddenly snapped up straight, her eyes growing blank before glowing brightly. Before anyone could say anything, the raven-haired girl sped off into the building, running faster than anyone had ever seen her do before, leaving her bag and Kudamon behind.
"What the—KAGOME!" Tai called out to his sister.
"Ga…t…G…a…"
The feline Digimon's ears perked up and she took off into the building straight after Kagome.
"Gatomon!" Kari called out.
"Come on, let's go after them!" Davis exclaimed.
And with that, the rest of the group set forth into the building doing their best to catch up with Gatomon and Kagome.
Eventually, the group found themselves in the room contained within the large globe-like structure of the building. Kagome stood in the centre of the room, facing them, underneath the chandelier pinned to the ceiling while Gatomon stood a few feet behind her.
T.K gasped, pointing up to the ceiling. "It's that shadow! The one dad was talking about!"
And sure enough, there it was. A long shadow with what looked like a pointed hat swirling about the room aimlessly before making several quick passes around the chandelier and repeating the pattern all over again.
"Ga…to…m…Ga…t…m…n"
"What does it want?" Sora asked.
"Me," Gatomon stepped forward, "It wants me. Well, if you want me, I'm right here!"
"Ga…t…mo…G…to…m…n"
"Davis, I think she's flipped her lid!" DemiVeemon squeaked.
"Wha—" the maroon-haired boy looked in in confusion when his Digimon as did Yolei's and Cody's hopped down.
"We've gotta do somethin'!" Upamon said.
"Are you sure this is a good idea?" Yolei asked hesitantly.
"We've got to save Gatomon!" Poromon bounced.
"DemiVeemon Digivolve to: Veemon!"
"Upamon Digivolve to: Armadillomon!"
"Poromon Digivolve to: Hawkmon!"
"I'll assume that this is a servant of the Digimon Emperor sent to frighten us," Hawkmon spoke.
"No!" Gatomon cried out, standing in the trio's way. "Wait a bit more!" She turned around. "I'm here…Wizardmon!"
The original DigiDestined gasped in shock, one by one as they heard the name of their fallen friend. However it was what had happened as soon as Gatomon said the Digimon's name that interested them.
A twister of air whirled around Kagome's form, whipping up her hair and shirt a bit. The twister started out slow, but quickly grew faster and faster until Kagome's form was just a blur to them all.
"Kagome!" Tai, Kudamon, and Kari shouted together.
Eventually, there was a flash of light and with it, the twister pulsed out, sending a strong breeze in the group's direction.
"Kagome?" Tai breathed out when his eyes fell on his sister's form. Gasps erupted from each and every member of the group as they took in Kagome's form.
The~Ninth~Child
Kagome was no longer wearing the outfit she had been. Now, she wore a cream-hued high-collared thigh-length dress with a tulle-layered skirt, long poet sleeves; the dress had zipper patterns straying over the fabric. She wore a long purple cape secured by a skull ornament with symbols etched on the inside, purple wrist-length gloves, and dark-brown knee-high boots with a two-inch heel.
Her hair was left down with half pulled back into a braid and a large purple witch's hat sat on her head.
The~Ninth~Child
"W-Wizardmon?" Gatomon asked, unsure of what had just happened.
"Gatomon," Kagome said, her voice layered with Wizardmon's. Her face grew soft towards the feline Digimon. "I'm glad you came."
"Wizardmon?" Kari asked hesitantly. "Are you inside Kagome?"
"Who's he?" Davis asked. "A friend or foe?"
"It was the only way I could speak with you," Kagome replied, "Kagome will be returned unharmed when I've passed on my message."
"What is it, old friend?" Gatomon inquired.
"A Great Enemy approaches," Kagome spoke, "And you cannot defeat him as you are."
"Does she mean the Digimon Emperor?" Yolei wondered.
"Bring Darkness back to Light where only Kindness will release the Golden Radiance," the raven-haired girl told them, "Truth lays hidden deep within, buried under sorrow, anger and grief; controlled and overtaken by malice. Kindness will be your aid in the trials to come."
"Is she talking about Ken?" Cody questioned.
"I hope that doesn't mean we have to be nice to that jerk!" Yolei huffed.
"I see…"
"You do not have much time, my friend," Kagome said loudly, "You must hurry!"
"W-Wait!" Gatomon called out, running up to her old friend. She reached a paw out at the same time Kagome reached out a hand to the feline Digimon. Their hands touched and for just a brief instance, Gatomon could feel the warmth of the friend who'd stood by her for so long. "Wizardmon…"
"Goodbye and good luck, Gatomon…" Kagome said, her voice trailing off.
Sparks erupted from the quickly dissolving hat to whirl around the raven-haired girl, raising her into the air, slowly changing her back into the way she was before the transformation.
"Wiazrdmon!" Gatomon cried.
"Gatomon…" Kari took her Digimon into her arms, having passed off her rose bouquet off to her brother.
"I got her!" Matt ran up and caught the raven-haired girl in his arms as she was lowered to the ground.
"How is she?" Sora asked as she and Mimi ran over, checking their friend over for any visible sign of injury.
"Just drained, I think," Joe said as he looked her over, "Being possessed isn't something easy, I'll assume."
"Who was Wizardmon?" Davis asked quietly.
Sora's voice was husky as she stifled the tears that threatened to come out. "Four years ago we battled a very evil, dark Digimon named Myotismon. In this very place, he launched an attack at Kari and Gatomon, an attack that was meant to destroy them. But Wizardmon jumped before Myotismon's Grisly Wing and paid the ultimate price. He sacrificed his life for Kari and Gatomon! And for that, we'll never forget him."
"He stayed with me, protecting me, helping me," Gatomon wept, "And even now, he's still watching over me!"
"Will we ever see him again?" Kari asked quietly.
"We will," Tai nodded, "I know we will."
"You will," a voice spoke hoarsely. The group looked down to where matt was supporting a weak Kagome. "His time…here is over…but he…will be…reborn…once…more…"
