-The Ninth Child-
xX-The Wind Blows To the Future-Xx
"Cody what are you doing?" Yolei asked in shock, watching as the young boy tried heaving a now slightly-normal-looking Owikawa through the hole in the wall to the Digital World.
"It's just a little further, Mr. Owikawa, don't give up now!" Cody pleaded as he did his best to keep his balance with the weight of the older man bearing down on him.
"Should we help him?" Mimi asked Kagome quietly.
"Even if we did, it would be too late," Kagome shook her head, "As much as it pained me to say that, it is true. He doesn't have much time left; I can feel his aura dimming with each passing moment. And even if we brought him here, there's not much to see right now as the Digital World needs time to grow back to what it had been before Myotismon's involvement."
They could only watch as the rest of the DigiDestined preteens made their way over to Owikawa and Cody. They couldn't hear what was being said, but they knew the man was on the last few lines of his life.
"Why don't we show him some of the Digital World we knew?" Kagome asked Mimi.
"Which one?" the caramel-haired girl asked, catching onto Kagome's idea.
"We'll show him a wind that blows into the future," the raven-haired girl made her way with her Digimon and Mimi to where Owikawa, the preteen DigiDestined as well as a small Datrimon.
"Is that the Digital World?" they heard Owikawa ask. "It seems so unfinished…"
"Much power was used to defeat MaloMyotismon and as a result, the Digital World itself had been weakened," Gennai told the weak man, "I'm afraid it's going to take a lot of work to get everything back to how it used to be."
"Are you sure, you can't make it?" Cody asked desperately. "It's just a few steps away!"
"Cody," Kagome said gently, "MaloMyotismon was using Owikawa and his life force to feed his own, so when he formed his own body, he used up a great amount of Mr. Owikawa's life energy. I'm afraid he doesn't have much time left."
"But he never even got to see the best parts of the Digital World!" tears bubbled up in the young boy's eyes.
"Except we can show him," Mimi gestured to Kagome and herself.
"Can you?" Owikawa's eyes widened and a spark of excitement lit up within his dark eyes, despite his dimming life.
Kagome snapped her fingers thrice once more and music started filtering through the air as the scenery around them all changed.
Kaze wa Fuiteiru – AKB0048/AKB48
*Oh-oh
Oh-oh
Oh-oh*
*Here in the void of this desolate land
I stopped in my tracks, unable to speak
Amidst all this, where should I start?
Surrounded by despair, I seek light*
Everyone, including the international DigiDestined watched in awe as the scene around them changed to show different aspects of the Digital World, such as the forests, Primary Village, vast fields of flowers, and much more.
*If there is a God somewhere out there
The please, let me establish once more
A new world in these lands*
*Even so to the future the wind is blowing
I feel on my cheek, the breath of life
Even so I will live on with courage
Come, let's start by placing the first cornerstone*
"I wonder, did you notice that they've been singing Masquerade's songs the entire time?" Izzy whispered to Tai and Joe. "And it's pitch or pitch, note for note at that! Very suspicious, if you ask me…"
"Since when do you know so much about Masquerade anyway?" Tai asked with a raised eyebrow. 'I can't deny it, though; there're just too many similarities…'
"Since I got curious when Matt told us how no one knows who they are," the auburn-haired genius shrugged.
*The wounds from my memories are healing over
Kindness being born from pain*
*Was it better to be held before?
To talk about your dreams in such warmth?
I want to carry only as many responsibilities
As tears that have fallen
Onlookers won't be able to do anything*
"It's all so beautiful," Owikawa whispered, "I wish Hiroki could've been here to see this…he would've been so happy…"
*And yet love continues into the future
People want to meet one another
And here I take one step forward
Starting to pick up all the forgotten wishes*
(Music)
*Even so to the future, the wind if blowing
If you close your eyes I'm sure you'll feel it
There's no doubt to the future the wind is blowing
Even if I lose everything and despair for an answer
I'm sure of one thing
I'm right here, right now
I'll sweep aside the rubble that blocks my path and live on*
'She really does have a heart of gold,' Matt smiled softly at the raven-haired girl as she and Mimi sang and danced this last song, their performance keeping the live-slideshow of the Digital World as it should be running.
'I like him,' Sora thought with a light frown, 'But I can't be happy with someone that probably never liked me the way I did him.' She glanced at Kagome. 'Besides, I think Kagome deserves a little happiness in her life…she's always giving and giving, but she never takes anything in return…'
*Even if the wind dies down
There is no world where the wind ceases forever
No matter when, as naturally as breathing
Even if today, the world seems to be against you
Why don't we start by doing what we can?*
"Thank you," Owikawa said hoarsely, his body glowing, "Thank you for making the final moments of my life the best I've ever had since Hiroki died. My body is growing weaker, but…I won't need it…"
"No, you can't go!" Cody cried out.
"There's gotta be another way!" T.K tried stopping the man from what he was doing.
"Hold onto your optimism Cody, and especially your friends," Owikawa told him, his body slowly beginning to disintegrate. "Perhaps, if I'd been more like you, I could've had adventures, too!"
"But you still can!" The young boy tried reasoning with the adult. "You finally made it to the Digital World and found your partner Digimon, didn't you? Mr. Owikawa!"
"You're leaving so soon after we just met?" Datrimon whimpered.
"Don't worry," Owikawa's voice echoed around them as white sparks flew through the air, "I'll always be here in the Digital World, protecting it! Goodbye DigiDestined…thank you!"
As strong as they seemed, no one was able to hold in their tears at Owikawa's departure. Kari huddled in close to T.K as Mimi did with Joe and Kagome with Tai. Sora and Matt stayed apart, though he placed his hands on her shoulders, offering a silent form of comfort. Yolei hugged Cody closer as Davis and Ken bowed their heads in remorse along with Izzy.
-Two Weeks Later; Primary Village-
"Elecmon!" Kagome called out to the caretaker of Primary Village. "We've got a few new hatchlings over here!"
"Again?!" The red rabbit Digimon yelped as he zipped over to where Kagome was giving the Digimon a few bottles to keep them full for the time being. "Man, that's the third batch this week! What's up with all this hatchin'?"
"Maybe since the Digital World is still healing from the damage done by MaloMyotismon," Kagome spoke, "It's also trying to bring new lives to live in a new time of peace."
It had been about two weeks since the final battle with MaloMyotismon had taken place. It seemed that with Owikawa's life force helping out the Digital World, it was restored far quicker to its original state than anyone thought was possible, though no one was complaining about that fact due to their being grateful for the restored scenery and protections of the Digital World.
Tai had certainly given Kagome an earful about keeping secrets from him, but told her he was happy to have such a talent person for a sister nonetheless. Mimi, after a little pressuring from Kagome, had finally confessed to Joe about her feelings for him. Lucky for her, returned them whole-heartedly with a flushing face and a sheepish smile. T.K and Kari were still going on strong, though it looked like their bond with each other had only deepened after the danger had passed. Although Ken's relationship with Sam was still a little rocky, he was just glad to have his together again. Cody hadn't really changed too much and went about life as he usually did, but with more confidence and a bigger sense of justice than they all had ever seen. Davis continued playing soccer and even started trying to cook (though his family swore he was trying to poison them), giving up on Kari along the way as well. Yolei was just going about life and living through it day after day, facing problems as they came. As far as anyone had known, Matt and Sora were perfectly happy spending time together, or at least that's the impression they'd gotten since they hadn't seen then very much in the weeks that followed MaloMyotismon's defeat. Kagome, on the other hand, did her best to ignore her broken heart by helping Elecmon out in Primary Village, where they were apparently experiencing some sort of DigiBaby-Boom.
The children infected with the Dark Spores had no lasting side effects but the heightened intelligence and athletic abilities, though they tried toning it down for the sake of fairness during school. The De-DigiDestined were often seen together or hanging out with the DigiDestined themselves, though Matt and tai often objected to that when Shun, Kyo, and Daisuke often tried flirting with Kagome.
"If you say so," Elecmon flopped onto the ground, "I'm beat! Taking care of these critters is no joke!" He glanced as Kagome as she played with a little YukimiBotamon, all the while keeping an eye on her Kapurimon who was off playing with some more In-Training Digimon. "I don't think I've ever mentioned this to you, Kagome, but thanks for your help around here. The kids definitely love you and having you around doesn't put so much work on me to keep track of those critters."
"Well, I love taking care of them," Kagome giggled as a Nyaromon's tail tickled her under her chin.
"It's still a little hard to believe, though," The red rabbit Digimon looked at the raven-haired girl as she sat on the plushy ground, "That you don't have a boyfriend or anything. I mean any guy would be lucky to have you, so why don't you have someone for yourself?"
Kagome gave him a small smile. "Maybe because the one I love loves someone else…" Her eyes glazed over as her mind drifted off into other thoughts.
'This definitely isn't right,' Elecmon shook his head, 'That girl's a gem of all gems and she's alone?! Man if I ever got a hold of the guy that broke her heart…' "Hey, Kagome, why don't you go on ahead to the nursery and keep the little ones there occupied, I'll take over here."
"Are you sure?" Kagome asked. "I don't mind taking care of the newborns."
"Nah," the Digimon waved off her concerns. "You deserve a good rest, so go on! Shoo!"
Kagome giggled as she took Kudamon and Kapurimon with her as she headed down to the nursery where the In-Training Digimon were.
"Okay, whoever's out there, come out or I'll be getting' one over you soon enough!" Elecmon barked at the bushes.
"Wait, it's just me, Gabumon!" said Digimon ran out of the bushes, holding his hands up in a non-threatening gesture. "Remember, I'm T.K's brother's partner!"
"Yeah, yeah, I remember," Elecmon nodded. "So what brings you here to little old Primary Village? I can't make up back into a baby if that's what you came here to ask for."
"NO I actually—" Gabumon blinked. "Why would anyone want to be turned back into a baby Digimon?"
"I don't know," Elecmon shrugged, "I get the weirdest requests sometimes, you won't even believe what half of them want. Okay, so if you're not here for that, whatcha here for, then?"
"It's about Kagome," Gabumon told Elecmon, "How is she?"
"Doing wonderful," Elecmon reported, "Except, she could be happier. I know she's trying to hide how she's hurtin' from her broken heart, but there's only so much I can do if she doesn't want to talk about it." He sighed. "Who's dumb enough not to see what's in front of 'em, leavin' that beauty of a jewel all alone like that?"
The horned Digimon winced a little. "That would be…my…partner…Matt," he said slowly, trying not to ignite the red rabbit Digimon's anger. 'Oh boy, is it a coincidence that anyone that knows Kagome will would fight tooth and nail for her happiness?'
Elecmon was silent for a few moments. "What in the heck is wrong with that kid, then?! I'm askin' again: Is he too blind to see that lovely little lady?"
"It's more like he didn't see her that way until recently," Gabumon shrugged weakly. "But I do know that the girl h was with isn't with him anymore. I thought this might give them the out they needed."
"So the little gem might have a chance?" Elecmon's ear perked up.
"It's certainly a high possibility from what I've been seeing," Gabumon nodded, "But if push comes to shove, I'll need your help."
"You really want 'em together, don't ya?" Elecmon asked after a moment.
"They're meant for each other, as cheesy as it sounds," the striped Digimon reasoned, "I know they are!"
The rabbit Digimon eyed the striped Digimon for a moment before sighing and giving a nod. "All right, you've got me. But whatever happens, that little gem better not get hurt, capice?"
Gabumon nodded quickly, giving a mental sigh of relief.
The~Ninth~Child
"Gome, can you sing, please?" a leafmon asked, bouncing up and down in excitement.
"Yeah, please!"
"Please!"
"Please sing!"
"Okay, okay," Kagome chuckled. She quickly glanced up at the sky 'Hmm, I should sing something quick, it's about time for their nap…' She snapped her fingers thrice and soft bars of piano began filling the air as the little Digimon as began crowing around her, Kapurimon in her lap and Kudamon wrapped around her shoulders.
Crazy in Love – Elissa Rosselli/Winx Club
Should I tell him? Should I tell him not?
(There are a million things that I can't tell you)
Wrote you a letter that I didn't sign
You turn around, just one look and I'm in heaven
Kagome smiled a little, despite the pang of sadness she felt from the song, at the dropping eyes of the baby Digimon huddled in around her.
I see the flowers bloom when you're around me
I hear the angels sing the sweetest melody
Whenever you call my name
(Whenever you call)
(Whenever you call my name)
She looked at Kudamon and nodded in the direction where she sensed Elecmon before inclining her head to the little Digimon around her, telling him to get get the caretaker of primary Village so they could put the little ones to bed.
Kudamon nodded and zipped off.
If only I could tell you how I'm feelin'
How much you mean to me
Why can't you see that I'm
Crazy in love with you
By the time Kagome had finished her song, all the baby Digimon were snoring away, drifting off into the land of dreams. Elecmon had come just as Kagome had begun singing the final verse and sat back with Gabumon as the raven-haired girl finished her piece.
"Well," Elecmon hopped up to the raven-haired girl who had Kudamon situated back around her shoulders, "At least this'll make getting' 'em into bed easier." He looked at Gabumon. "Hey, you, get over here and help us out; there's way more to tuck in here than I thought…"
-Primary Village; A Week Later-
"Elecmon, what on earth are you doing?" Kagome asked as the rabbit Digimon tied a blindfold around her eyes.
"You'll see," the rabbit Digimon chuckled before looking at the young woman he'd come to care for. 'Man is that kid in for a big surprise!'
The~Ninth~Child
Kagome came to the Digital World wearing a knee-length white off-shoulder dress with one-inch wide straps wining around her upper arms. The neckline was edged off with small gold ruffled lace, a lacy gold sash was tied around her waist with the bow resting on her right hip and decorated in the centre with a silver bejeweled charm, and the skirt had a layer or two of light-gold tulle underneath and little golden roses with vines decorating the hem as well as the straps of the dress. Wound around her arms was a simple sheer lavender wrap decorated with roses stitched in gold.
Around her neck was a simple black silk ribbon tied off into a small knot on the left side of her neck, a thin silver bangle rested on each of her wrists, and a simple pair of silver hoops was in her ears. She wore a pair of strappy black heels that rose up about two hair was parted to the right and curled a bit to add a wave before a the crescent moon haircharm Kimi had used before was used to secure a small section pulled back and her bangs were left splayed over her forehead, but brush a bit to the side to nearly cover her right eye.
The~Ninth~Child
'What's going on with everyone today?' Kagome wondered as Elecmon took her hand and led her in some direction or another. 'First, Sora tells me to have a 'great time', then Mama starts squealing with Kari while Papa and Tai were annoyed about something, Kimi-Mama abducts me and dresses me up again, and now just when I finally come to see what Elecmon wanted, I get blindfolded by him!'
However, despite the questions bubbling up within her mind, the raven-haired teen kept her mouth shut and walked along with Elecmon, who carefully guided her around over whatever obstacles laid in their path. It wasn't until a little later did the rabbit Digimon come to a stop. "Okay, this is where I'm gonna let you go," he told her, "My friend here's gonna take you to where you're needed."
"Who are you—" Kagome began when a large furry muzzle was pressed into her hands gently. She felt around with her hands before looking into who's aura it was and cocked an eyebrow beneath the blindfold. "Garurumon? What on earth are you doing here? What's going on? And why is everyone acting so strange today?"
"Slow down, Kagome," Garurumon chuckled as Elecmon helped the raven-haired teen up onto his back and making sure she wouldn't be falling off any time soon. "I promise you'll get your answers soon enough!" And with that, the wolf-like Digimon bounded off, the sound of his paws thudding on the ground, echoing in her ears through the whistling wind.
They rode on for what seemed like hours to Kagome when they stopped short. "We're here," Garurumon announced, kneeling down carefully so as not to jostle his unseeing passenger. Kagome made to get down but found a pair of wings pushing her forward gently down what seemed like a staircase and a pair of claws pulling her forward to guide her. Suddenly, the same pair of wings that had helped her from behind flew up behind her to release the blindfold to let her eyes gaze upon the place she'd been taken to.
Kagome gasped.
She seemed to be on a short cliff by the beach. Tiny balls of fire that actually were DemiMeramon were floating around in no specific pattern, creating a beautiful scene against the star-studded night sky. And right there, on the edge of the cliff was a large cloth with flowers strewn over it and leading to it as well as a large picnic basket resting simply on the cloth. "What in the—"
"Hey, Kagome," a voice said from behind.
The raven-haired girl whipped around to see Matt stepping out from behind Garurumon. She spotted Tentomon and Biyomon there as well as Palmon and Agumon. 'So they must have been in on it, too…' Kagome thought, referring to the Digimon, 'But whatare they planning?'
The~Ninth~Child
Matt wore a pair of black slacks, a deep-blue polo-neck, and a black blazer over it. He wore black high-tops.
The~Ninth~Child
"Matt?" Kagome asked curiously, ignoring the fact that her heart was beating about a mile a minute. "What are you doing here? What's going on?"
The blonde chuckled at the questions the raven-haired teen fired one off after another. "Calm down, Kagome, I asked Elecmon and everyone else to help me out with this tonight. I wanted to do something for you and they just offered their help."
"You planned this?" Kagome whispered confusedly. "Why?"
"Why don't we have a little dinner first before I answer that question," Matt guided his female friend over to the blanket that was spread out. "I know I didn't mention this before, and I was stupid not to, but you look stunning," he whispered into her ears.
Kagome's eyes widened as a flush ran over her cheeks. She turned shocked icy-orbs towards Matt, not understanding why he said something that like when he never had before. 'W-What? Why did he—He's never—And I—What's happening here?!' But the raven-haired girl's shock passed as time went on, eating the wonderful meal that was revealed to have been made by Matt himself and chatting with the blonde as though the moment a while ago never had happened.
Eventually, they packed up the picnic basket and began walking along the beach, having left their shoes with the basket so as to avoid sinking into the sand. Matt watched with a soft smile as he watched Kagome chase an outgoing wave, only to squeal and retreat from an incoming tide soaking her feet in the cold water. His eyes followed her form as the light of the moon and stars shone down on her, giving her a sort of ethereal slow about her. 'Absolutely beautiful …'
Kagome could feel Matt's eyes on her, but as much as she wanted to ask him why he did all this tonight, she waited for him to speak first. Unfortunately, her wish wasn't granted when the blonde just continued to watch Kagome as she played in the waves. 'I guess I'll have to be the one to start us off…' "Matt…" the raven-haired girl said as she slowly stopped dancing along the shore, "Why did you have me come here tonight? You knew where to find me if you wanted to see me, and yet, you asked me to come here. Why?" She looked out at the ocean waves glowing in the moonlight.
She heard the blonde walk closer to her until he came to a stop a few inches behind her. "Is it wrong of me to want to spend some time my friend?" he asked.
"No," Kagome conceded, "But you didn't have to go through all this trouble just for one night. We could have easily just met up at a café or something back home. You know that."
"I do," Matt nodded, "But I felt that you deserved more than that."
"You're still avoiding my question," Kagome smiled a little, "Why did you ask me to come out here tonight?"
"You know," Matt spoke, ignoring Kagome's question, "They say that we live once, we die once, we marry once, too, and we love…"
(AN: That quote was a translation of a quote from the Hindi film "Kuch Kuch Hota Hain", which really is a wonderful film! Of course, that doesn't mean the quote is true no matter how sweet it sounds.)
"Only once," Kagome looked up at him, finishing the sentence. 'What is he getting at with this?'
"Before Sora asked me out," the blonde continued, "I never really noticed girls all that much. Sure, I knew how rowdy fangirls could get, but I never really looked at a girl and thought 'I like her' as anything more than a friend. I saw how the relationship between my Mom and Dad worked out, so I never really thought about romance all that much. But when Sora asked me out and gave me those gifts, I decided to give it a shot. I thought 'Maybe this might be my chance at love' and I started going out with her."
Kagome could eel her heart breaking with each word Matt spoke, but continued listening, giving to outward sign of her distress.
"And for a while," Matt picked up his story, "I thought I loved her, too. But…I don't know, something happened one night and I just felt like we were…wrong, I guess. That we didn't belong with each other that way; that we were meant to just be friends. I guess Sora picked up on that, too, 'cause she was the one that suggested we break up. And I guess, I realized that I was always in love with someone else, even if I never knew it." His hand touched upon a notecard in his pocket.
-Flashback; Three Weeks Ago-
"Matt?" Gabumon asked, surprised when his partner came into the Digital World with no warning. "What are you doing here? Is everything all right?"
Matt sighed as he took a seat on the ground, Gabumon plopping down beside him. "Yeah, no—I really don't know how I am right now, Gabumon."
"Well, what's happened to get you so confused?" the horned Digimon asked.
"Sora and I just broke up," Matt answered, "She said that she was happy with me, but she wouldn't stay because I wouldn't be happy with her. But the thing is, I should be feeling bad, shouldn't I? and yet, I don't!"
"And why don't you?" Gabumon asked, hope rising within him as he prayed for Matt to confess the thing that he had known for ages.
"Because I like Kagome!" the blonde blurted out. He sat up straight in shock, eyes wide and jaw dropped, a flush going over his cheeks. "I—I—But—"
Gabumon resisted the urge to do a happy dance right then and there. "Why be embarrassed about that, Matt? Kagome is a lovely young lady that anyone would be lucky to be with."
"I mean, she's Tai's sister!" Matt flushed even more. "I can't like her! He'll pummel me into dust! And that's not counting what the Taishos, Joe, or even her dad'll do!"
Gabumon hummed as he eyes his partner for a moment. "What do you like about Kagome?"
"Well," the blonde ran his hands through his hair, "she's beautiful for one, and not just in looks. She's got a heart of gold and cares for anyone and everyone no matter what. She's protective of everyone she cares about, she's great with kids and T.K just loves her. Her voice sounds like a beautiful melody and I just can't get it out of my head. But her eyes…they sparkle and shine so brightly that half the time I forget where I am. She's got an air of mystery around her and I guess it just makes me like her even more."
"Matt," Gabumon told him, "You don't just like Kagome. You're in love with her."
"Love…" Matt looked up into the sky for a moment, "Man oh man, I am! I'm in love with Kagome!"
"So why don't you just go on and tell her?" the horned Digimon suggested.
"Because for all I know, she probably doesn't think of me as anything but a friend!" Matt yelled out in frustration. "I-I guess I'm just scared of getting rejected or ruining the friendship we have…" he trailed off after calming somewhat.
Gabumon hesitated for a moment before reaching into his fur and pulling out a small notecard with a floral border. "I probably shouldn't be doing this," he said slowly, "But I don't think you have worry about rejection." He handed over the card to Matt and let him read it over.
Matt,
I've never written to someone to tell them how I felt, at least not like this.
I don't know how it happened or when it did, but I know that I love you.
I'm just hoping that even if you don't feel the same that you don't laugh or cut off our friendship.
Know that if you have someone else you love, I'll be right there cheering you on.
-Kagome
"Wh-Where did you get this, Gabumon?" Matt asked, looking at his partner with wide eyes.
"Do you remember Kagome's Christmas gift?" Gabumon reminded the blonde.
"Yeah, what about it?" Matt cocked his head to the side a little.
"This note was originally supposed to be part of her gift to you," the horned Digimon explained, "But when she found out that Sora liked you, she asked me to switch this note with the one you found with your gift and throw this one away."
"She did all that for Sora?" Matt whispered.
"She only wanted the two of you to be happy, even at the expense of her own," Gabumon nodded.
-End Flashback-
It took a little effort on her part, but Kagome managed to not let her surprise at Matt's declaration. 'He's not with Sora anymore? And what does he mean he's been in love with someone else this entire time?' The last thought had her heart sinking once more. 'But who could it be?'
"Can I ask you something?" Matt looked at Kagome.
"If you promise to stop avoiding my question, you can," Kagome nodded.
"Why didn't you ever give this to me?" the blonde held out the notecard he received from Gabumon in front of her.
"I—But Gabumon—But he didn't—" Kagome stumbled over her words, shocked at seeing the note she'd told Gabumon to dispose of in Matt's hand. She blushed furiously. "I just didn't want to ruin things between you and Sora," she whispered, head down, still flushing, and wishing that she could crawl into a hole right about now.
"You know," Matt said softly, "If you gave this to me earlier, then a lot of what's happened could've been avoided."
"Huh?" Kagome's eyes widened in confusion underneath her bangs. She felt Matt's finger underneath her chin, guiding her face to look at him. "M-Matt?"
"I told you I was in love with someone else," Matt smiled softly, "And I also told you that I would tell you why I ask you here tonight. I asked you here to tell you that I love you, Kagome. I've always loved you, but it just took time for me to see." He touched his forehead to hers. "Do you think you can forgive me for being such a blockhead?"
Tears began streaming down the raven-haired girl's cheeks. "Always," she whispered to him with a teary smile.
The blonde closed his eyes in relief before leaning down and touching his lips to hers in a sweet kiss.
In that moment, Kagome didn't know how, but she felt that their future and everyone else's would be a bright one to look forward to.
