It took a couple of days for Cole to figure out just how he could bring up the prophecy to the other four. There was a lot to take in and most of it sounded insane, but he still had a feeling that they were going to find out even if he was silent about it. Regardless, his gut told him that he should be the one to tell them.
The first one that he considered telling was Dante since were already friends and he just seemed like the easiest one to approach and handle it the best. Where was he going to say it? None other than the arena during an inter-cabin sparring session, at least that was somewhere that he could comfortably break the news and of course he needed to practice with his new weapons.
Cole arrived at the arena with the same time as the Nike cabin along with the Zelos cabin. However, the Zelos cabin also had one person, Regina Barrett. How convenient, she was there to practice as well with her though her bow was leaning against the nearby edge of the arena. Did she take that everywhere she went? He would have to ask at some point later. For now, he'd pick up a wooden sword and shield for practicing and head out to
"Dante!" Cole called out as he strode over to where his friend was kneeling and fixing his shoelace, "what's up Man? You need a partner?"
"What's going on, Man?" He said before finishing up tying his shoe and looking up. A smile crept on his face at the challenge, normally Dante was casual about being challenged by Cole especially compared to his siblings but since the battle he's had a different look in his eye. "I'm down," he said as he picked up his own training sword and shield. "Just lemme know when you're ready."
"I'm ready now," Cole said immediately, "also… I gotta talk to you about something."
"Oh yeah? What is it?"
"So, like, I talked to Rachel a couple days ago. You know, about my whole thing being claimed and everything." Cole said as he got back to get some space between the two of them, "I got a prophecy…"
"Mhmm…" Dante replied with a nod, "I mean, it's kinda expected that YOU would get one. Big Three kid and all."
"Yeah, I know but like, it wasn't just that." Cole glanced around for a second, his eyes landing on Regina for a moment before looking at Dante. "It was different, she called it recyclable."
"'Cause history repeats itself, yeah that makes sense."
"What the fuck, how did you catch that?"
"Bro, it is not that hard to come up with."
"Okay," said Cole, "so like, the prophecy says that I'm gonna team up with four other people and we're gonna do… something. I dunno, prophecies don't make it all that clear."
"Hm… that's… I dunno. So, like, why you telling me about this? You want me on your team?"
"Yeah, I do. Well, you're also a part of the prophecy 'cause of your mom. It's a lot."
Cole probably would have been able to elaborate on it if Tyler Ford had not interrupted and told them to start sparring. Cole sighed, getting some space from Dante, and readying himself for the charge.
The charge came alright, Cole could never deny that Dante was fast. The son of Nike came in, swinging his wooden kopis at him but only contacting Cole's shield. Cole frowned, shrugging off the sword and countering with a swing of his own. Dante was already out of the way as Cole came in, circling around to get a better angle. Cole kept his footing, watching Dante closely as he would bring his shield in front of him.
Two summers at the camp benefitted Cole well enough to a point. He wasn't necessarily a rookie when it came to combat but that didn't really mean that he was a top tier fighter… not yet at least. For now, everybody who knew him knew that he was talented but still young. The son of Zeus would press on, taking the chance to charge in and deliver a solid thrust at Dante. The didn't bode all too well as Dante would sidestep the thrust as he brought up his own sword, bringing it down as he reached the side. Cole grunted in pain as he felt the wooden blade contact his exposed arm. Just like that, he'd lost. After all, in a real fight, he would have lost his hand from a cut like that.
"Fuck…" he said as he brought his arm back in and straighten up, "I thought today was the day."
"What?" Dante asked as he allowed himself a small triumphant grin, "the day you'd beat me? Nah, Bruh. You either come correct or you get wrecked, no in-betweens."
"Huh," said Cole with a sigh. He made a mental note that one of these days, he's going to beat Dante. Somehow. In the meantime, he would imagine fighting alongside his friend. Hopefully with a better result than what happened at the battle not too long ago. That was something strange, especially considering how well Dante and Regina did. Speaking of Regina, his eyes were falling on her once again as she seemed to be in the process of sparring with another one of the Nike kids. However, their little match was gaining some extra eyes as Regina was… winning?
"Ain't no fucking way…" Dante said as his eyes widened. Cole felt his legs take him over to where she was sparring, much like a couple other people in the arena.
Regina had her sword and shield in hand, facing off against a rather determined Ricky Carmichael. However, it seemed like every moved he used was one that she could counter. Ricky held up his sword to parry her counter slash before he quickly dashed to her open side and thrust his sword in to finish the match. Regina slipped out of the way before, moving back. Ricky would then apply pressure with his sword but that's when the surprise came.
To everyone's surprise, Regina went and gave her opponent the same exact counter move that he had just done. Cole's eyes widened as well as he saw her parry Ricky's sword away, dash towards his open side, and surprise him with a thrust into the underside of his ribcage.
"Daaamn!" A few members from the Nike cabin said in unison as Regina soon pulled her sword back, taking a breath after just winning.
"That's crazy…" Dante said as he looked Regina up and down. "Ricky's kind of a scrub but like… not that much of a scrub."
Cole watched her as well while she took the time to catch her breathe. She was a decent height for a girl her age, standing a couple inches shorter than himself. Her frame was lithe, and she had notably confident posture. Initially, Cole thought she looked impressive but as he stared longer, he was starting to wonder…
"If you wanna ask me to spar so you can avenge ya brother then you can…" she said out loud, her eyes not aimed at Cole but at Dante. Ricky was clearly seething as he doesn't lose often to people outside of his cabin while a few others were nodding respect to Regina. Many of them were sore losers but they're taught to recognize skill and talent when they see it. Cole glanced over at his friend, seeing that Dante was taken aback.
"I mean… yeah…"
"No! I got it! Erm… her!" Cole suddenly exclaimed, his body stepping forward in between the two of them. "I mean, if it's cool with you two."
"I don't care either way," she said as raised and eyebrow and looked Cole up and down.
"Yeah, same." Dante said with a nod though he did give Cole a peculiar look.
The match would start the same as any other. Cole and Regina made sure to have some space between them both before moving in. Cole kept his shield up as he came in, Regina doing the same as her dark brown eyes moved around to think of a way to attack. Cole recalled how she'd beaten Ricky, using the same moves that was just used on her. How was she able to do that? Is that just a coincidence? No, demigods don't get coincidences. Ever.
Cole went to test the waters by slashing at her with his sword only to see it be blocked by her and her shield. No surprise there, it was a test. Regina would give a slash of her own, one that was also blocked. Then, Cole pushed back against her sword, dashing in to deliver a good slash on her more open side. Regina looked to be quick enough to evade his attack and would keep her shield in front of her instead of countering.
Cole furrowed his brow or a moment, he could guess what she was doing, and he felt his gut push him to take the chance at attacking her. He had a feeling about what was going to happen. Once he swung at her again, his hunch turned out to be correct.
Regina had blocked his swing and pushed back against his shield much like he'd just done to her, following that with a dash inside his guard to give him a decisive slash. However, she didn't anticipate that Cole would test her like this and so she was also open to his wooden sword point reaching her abdomen.
"You can copy people's moves," said Cole after contacting her stomach. Regina's eyes widened as she stepped back away from him. "Have you always been able to do that?"
"You might be like, the first person since Chiron to catch that since I got here," she said as she straightened up, rubbing her stomach a little. "But yeah, it's kind of something I can do to get an edge."
"I figured," said Cole as Dante came in, the son of Nike was watching them both rather closely.
"Hey, Cole?" Dante asked, "did you plan that?"
"Yeah," said Cole with a nod as he looked between them both. "I kinda guessed that she was copying so I tested her. Turns out I was right. How 'bout that?"
"Man…" Regina said as rolled her eyes, "I thought I was about to get a little streak going."
"So, you're Regina, right?" Cole asked her, "I think we should actually meet. I'm Cole and this is Dante."
"Hello," she said with a small neutral wave, "I know who y'all are. Y'all are the sons of Zeus and Nike. I remember y'all from that archery session the day of the battle. Nice to meet ya."
"Yeah, you too." Dante perked up.
"Yeah," said Cole. Considering the situation, he felt like now was a really good time to roped her in on the whole prophecy thing. "We were just wondering… okay mostly me… we were wondering if you were trying to come chill with us later on after lessons and shit. I gotta talk to you about something."
"Wait what?" Dante blurted out, "is she in the prophecy too?"
"Prophecy?" She asked while looking at Cole more closely.
"Yeah," Cole said, "it's a whole thing. Can you just meet us by the campfire later on tonight?"
"Yeah, I can." Who else gon' be there?"
"Only five people," said Cole, "us three, Andrew Brock, and Donna Davenport."
