Chapter 15
Dawn gave way to a new day, but for Adelina and Nami, it also gave way to their faces being splattered all over the news.
It wasn't the result they wanted from their heroic efforts, especially with experts coming on the different news channels as the renewed interest in mutants was sparked, surely, but it probably had the effect that they wanted.
When they had arrived at school, the entire place was buzzing with excitement and gossip about these new heroes that had suddenly appeared as though magic. Many of the students were talking about them with the same sort of reverence they used when speaking about the X-men, but there were a few minorities that (figuratively) spat on the 'freaks that broke away from the circus'.
Adelina didn't really care for those in the minority because all of her attention was zeroed in on the X-Men. She and Nami tried to eavesdrop in on conversations, tried to pry their opinion out of them during lunch, but none of it did any good.
They were tightlipped.
"What are we going to do?" Adelina asked as the two young girls lingered at their lockers.
"We'll have to do something tonight to get their attention and draw them in."
"Right."
"How long will practice be?"
Adelina racked her brain. "It starts at four-thirty and will end at around six. Or a little after."
Nami was silent as she watched the crowds of students walk around them. Adelina turned her gaze to the crowds of youths around them. She envied them so much, knowing from the stories that she was told by Kurt and the others that those around them lived a normal life, free from the terror and the worry that came with their lives.
"-et me at the rendezvous point."
Adelina blinked, quickly returning to the conversation. She nodded.
"We'll do a quick sweep of the city, and hopefully, run into the X-Men."
"What if they try to attack us?"
"They won't." Nami assured but Adelina couldn't help but notice the small amount of fear that glinted in those silver-blue orbs. "All we're going to do is just talk. Hopefully, they won't do anything brash."
"Well, just don't go threatening them." Adelina suggested. "I hope we can finish this soon."
"I know. Me too."
The bell gave a hollow ring, announcing the time to return to class. Adelina gave her friend a smile as she bid her goodbye and promised to be at the meeting place as soon as she was finished with practice. Nami watched her go, until Adelina had turned into her next classroom, preparing for another dull day of geometry.
