Chapter 16
The wind blew by, carrying the stale stench of the city. There wasn't any thing going on this early in the night, so Nami just stayed where she was. It would be a while before Adelina joined her on the city rooftops in her outfit.
Below Nami, the city was alive with the nightlife, as students enjoyed the lovely Friday night and the start of the weekend.
Something in the wind caused the hairs on Nami's hairs to stand on end. A warning of some sort, a shift in the atmosphere that her father had instructed her to be sensitive to. It felt very much like as a storm on the horizon with the air charged heavily with electricity and a heavy anger that was threatening to push down on the world before it could be released. Nami didn't like it. It made her very uncomfortable, a very thick and very oppressive pressure of things to come.
She shifted as something exploded down on the streets, moving into action when she heard the screams of a woman and man. Nami didn't want to wait on Adelina to arrive before jumping into action, fearful of what could happen if the young girl didn't get there in time. Nami was on the street, rolling into a crouch and running towards the sounds of the anguish screams as fast as she could. Her heart was pounding in her chest as she arrived at the scene, only for it to stop in shock at the sight.
Two humans, it looked like, curling in fear, their eyes wide in terror at some unseen foe. However, despite their terrified expressions, they lay on the ground, as though catatonic and unable to move. Cautiously, Nami knelt, placing at her hand on the woman's forehead only to withdraw it quickly. Despite her very weak psychic range, she could sense the turmoil that took place within these two people's minds. Her eyes darted to the sidewalk, her heart leaping to her throat when she noticed…a pink substance of sorts.
Nami knelt and dragged two fingers through it.
With one sniff, Nami quickly expelled the powder from her nostrils, shaking the rest of it off as best she could. Her heart leapt up to her throat, and her stomach twisted in a nauseatingly fashion. She became aware of the shadows around her that were closing in as her heart constricted with fear. The one person that was very fearful of who could lurk there, of what could lurk there, it was horrifying.
If she wasn't jumping to conclusions, and the being that she knew indeed could do something like was there, then she and Adelina were in trouble.
Sirens alerted her and brought her back to the present. There was nothing that she could do for the couple at her feet, paralyzed with fear. Nami shook herself out of her stupor before bending some puddle water that carried her to the nearest roof. She waited in the shadows of a brick wall as a police car and ambulance arrived at the scene, the humans working quickly.
Nami sighed before turning and headed back to the rendezvous point. Adelina was there, waiting for her with a curious expression. The blonde turned around with a wide grin that vanished when she saw the haunted look on her friend's face.
"Tsunami? Are you okay?"
"He's here, Ade." She whispered as she sat down on the roof. Her eyes scanned the stars, unable to look at her friend.
"Who?"
"Phobos." She glanced up to see the girl's eyes go wide with fear and the color drain from her face.
"What?" Her eyes darted around crazily. "When?"
Nami shrugged. "Who knows? He could've arrived almost immediately after us. O
