"What did you just say?" Carla said, her voice trembling as she stared at him with wide eyes.
"She put the camera out here," He repeated, tearfully. "I'm so sorry, baby. I can't believe I fell for it."
"When did you find out? Did you know all this time?" Carla questioned.
"She just told me out here," He explained, raising his voice at the thought of Carla thinking he knew this whole time. "And then Lucas came out and she played the victim."
"I can't believe she'd do this," Carla exhaled, moving to the bench and putting her head in her hands. "What did I ever do to her to make her hate me this much?"
Peter followed her, sitting by her side and placing an arm around her shoulders, "I don't know. She's obsessed with me."
"After everything we went through when I was ill...and to have her use that to her advantage to try and take you. That's a new low." Carla shook her head angrily.
"She won't get away with this."
"What are we going to do, Peter? I can't live on the same street as her." She cried.
"We can live our lives happily. Let's not let her win." Peter suggested, tilting her head up and kissing her.
"She's already won," Carla sighed. "Look at everything she's caused. She made you believe I had psychosis again, Peter!"
"We are still together, madly in love. That doesn't sound like her winning, does it?"
Carla bit her lip, looking around.
"What will she do next?" Carla asked, rhetorically.
"She has Lucas now-..."
"You and me both know that she's only with him to make you jealous. And he's hardly a saint is he? You know what he was like in Devon." She interrupted.
Peter had no reply, instead, he raked a hand through his short hair and leaned back.
"I want to speak to her," Carla gritted her teeth together, full of anger. "To ask her why. And to give her a slap."
"I don't think that's a good idea."
"Why not?" Carla's head whipped around, frowning as she looked at him.
"What good will that do? Think about it, love. I just don't think it'll solve anything."
"Are you sticking up for her?" Carla accused.
"Absolutely not," Peter said. "I feel horrendous for not believing you in the first place. But it's going to add fuel to the fire if you go round there all guns blazing. You'll give her a reason to act up again. If we leave it and carry on showing our love for each other, it'll be the opposite to the outcome she wanted."
"Fine," Carla said, bluntly. "I'm not in the mood for this now. I'm going home."
Without giving Peter a single glance, she stood up and left the smoking area, clearly very annoyed. Peter stayed seated for a second, groaning in frustration before walking away.
"You're up early." Peter broke the awkward atmosphere, walking out of the bedroom in his dressing gown as Carla stood making a coffee.
"Couldn't sleep." She muttered, stirring the drink before walking to the sofa in a daze.
"That's two nights in a row now," He said. "If this carries on, we'll have to go to the doctors and see if they can give you-..."
"It's only because of Tina and Lucas." She cut him off.
"Right," He cleared his throat. "I see you're still angry about last night, I am too."
"Of course I am," Carla rolled her eyes. "As if having an affair with my husband wasn't enough, she has used my illness to get back at me. Do you know how that feels? After how hard I worked to get better?"
"I know that. I feel so bad, love."
"You didn't lie about it, did you?"
"But I believed her." He exhaled, sitting next to her and putting his head in his hands.
"But you saw sense, Peter. Don't beat yourself up. Everyone believed her." She shrugged.
"Doesn't make it okay, you must've felt horrible, Carla."
"Can't say it was the best few days," She paused. "It's just...knowing how hard I worked to get better but not only that, trying to make myself known for who I was again. I didn't want to be the woman who turned crazy. I wanted to be Carla Connor again and let people know me for me. And I thought I did that, Peter. And then as soon as someone sets me up, every single person just instantly believed it without a moment of doubt. No matter what I said. It was too easy to get that mad woman title again."
"I understand that completely. And I can't put into words how sorry I am. I guess we were all manipulated too. But everyone will always know you as the sharp mouth business woman that you are, the ice queen. But who is also the strongest person I know. You've been through so much and you're still here. That is something to be proud of, love."
She faintly smiled, looking up at him and grabbing his hand.
"Don't let her win and take us back to square one, when we were frosty with each other. I love you too much." He added.
"I love you too," She sighed. "But I'm just feeling delicate today and need space is all. It's brought up some bad memories."
"Okay," He stroked her hand with the pad of his thumb. "Kiss?"
"Mmmm," She smirked, thinking about it. "Maybe later. I'm having a shower and going to work."
"Work?" He frowned.
"Mmhmm." She nodded.
"Why?"
"Why not, Peter? Do you expect me to sit in here all day and eat crisps because Tina McIntyre has upset me? No, I will be acting normal."
"What if you see her?"
"Then I'll cross the road and go the opposite way," She sighed. "I don't want to see her. It'll take everything in me not to knock her out."
"I know it's tempting, I am furious with her. But that's what she wants."
"I know."
Sat in the factory, Carla stared into space as she bit her nails. The clock was ticking, and the chatter and radio was blasting out from the main factory area but that wasn't enough to pull Carla back into realty.
Sarah continued to type away on the computer, sat opposite Carla where she could see her shift around uncomfortably and she was beginning to get concerned.
"Look, are you okay?" Sarah paused, looking up at Carla.
As Carla continued to look ahead, Sarah tutted and repeated herself...
"Carla!"
"What?" Carla snapped, rolling her eyes.
"If you're gonna be like that..." Sarah muttered.
I'm sorry, I-I'm just...preoccupied today that's all." Carla said, as Sarah softened.
"Do you want to talk about it?"
"I wouldn't know where to start to be honest."
"The beginning?" Sarah suggested.
"Oh, that's going way back. I don't fancy raking up the past from twenty fourteen." Carla scoffed.
"Twenty fourteen? Is this about...Tina?" Sarah's eyes widened.
"Ten points." Carla smiled sarcastically.
"Did she do something at the party yesterday?"
"A few home truths were made," Carla bit her lip. "She arrived at the pub and got drunk. Do you remember when you all thought I'd turned crazy again?"
"Don't put it like that, Carla." Sarah sighed. "We suspected you were ill again, yes. But you weren't crazy as you like to call it."
"Even so, well it all began because I saw a camera watching me in the smoking area. But when we went out to check, it had gone. Anyway, one thing after the other and everyone thought I was ill again. Turns out it was Tina who put it there. She tried to plant a seed of doubt to Peter that I was ill, hoping it would be enough to make him go running back to her. She is desperate for him." Carla explained.
"Are you serious, Carla!" Sarah screeched. "That is absolutely not okay."
"Tell me about it," Carla nodded. "I was more hurt last night. Having worked so hard to get better then someone to just use it against me like that. She took advantage of it. Now I'm angry more than anything."
"I can imagine. It's pure evil," She said, sympathetically. "What have you done about it? I hope she's currently in the morgue."
"I haven't spoken to her."
"Why the hell not?"
"Peter said it would do more damage, I was told to just leave it." She shrugged.
"Why is Peter calling the shots? You can't have Tina thinking she can do this and have zero consequences."
"You know what, I think you're right-..."
"This situation has affected you, Carla. Just you. And what she has done is completely unforgivable so why should you keep quiet? I don't know who Peter thinks he is by telling you what to do, it's almost as if he's siding with Tina on this one." Sarah interrupted.
"Peter just feels guilty with it all."
"Oh, poor him," She rolled her eyes, sarcastically. "Imagine how you must feel."
"I'm going to see her." Carla stood up, her chair crashing into the cabinet behind her.
"Now?" She raised her eyebrows.
"No time like the present." Carla flicked her hair back, holding her head high as she strutted out of the building.
She walked straight into the Cabin and at chance, there stood Tina and Lucas speaking to Rita by the till.
They didn't notice anyone walk in, but all gasped in shock as Carla harshly grabbed Tina's shoulder and turned her over.
"Oi!" Tina snapped, as Lucas pulled Tina away from Carla's grip.
"What do you think you're doing?" Lucas hissed.
"Me? Why don't you ask what she's been doing? Obsessing over my boyfriend."
"Oh, not this," Tina rolled her eyes. "Change the record, Carla!"
"What is this about? I don't want any arguing in here." Rita piped up.
"This slapper set everyone up to think my psychosis is back! She thought it would make Peter run back to her but you were wrong, weren't you?" Carla shouted.
As Tina looked to the ground, staying silent, Carla continued...
"Who do you think you are taking advantage of my illness like that? You have no idea how hard that was for me and my family." Carla added.
"Tina..." Rita shook her head, full of disappointment.
"And you think strolling in here yelling accusations is making you look mentally sane?" Lucas scoffed.
"Oh, shut up. You're only with her to watch me. And she's only with you to make Peter jealous. That says a lot, doesn't it?"
"Me and Tina love each other." Lucas lied, getting annoyed at Tina's ongoing silence.
"Cat got your tongue, Tina?" Carla smirked.
"I don't have to answer to you." She growled.
"I think you have to. Because I am sick of you coming in and ruining my life time and time again. Get over yourself! He doesn't like you. When will you get that into your thick skull." Carla yelled.
"I suggest you stop talking. This is not the place." Lucas warned.
"And when was it the right place for you to stalk me? Have you told Rita about that yet because I'm sure she'd be interested to know." Carla raised her eyebrows, satisfied when Lucas started looking more and more angrier.
"Stalk?" Rita frowned.
"When I lived in Devon," Carla explained. "He became obsessed with me. Following me around and taking photos. He is crazy!"
"The only crazy one here is you," Lucas said. "The past proves that."
"You evil bastard."
"Is everything alright here?" Craig walked in, not expecting such a heated argument to be happening when he only went in for chewing gum.
"No, it's not." Tina said, finding some confidence. "She has come in here throwing accusations about and she's very aggressive. She's scaring Rita."
"That doesn't sound like you," Craig looked over at Carla. "Are you okay?"
"I'm giving them a few home truths for destroying my life is all." Carla said, glaring at Lucas when he scoffed.
"I'm going to have to ask you to leave if you carry on, Carla. This is not the right place."
"Why am I having to go? Lucas threatened me!" Carla shouted.
"She's manic again." Lucas taunted under his breath.
"Will you just shut up!" Carla spun around, looking at the greying man furiously.
"I won't tell you again-..." Craig warned.
"Fine," Carla rolled her eyes, red in the face. "I am leaving."
"An absolute screw loose." Tina sighed, ignoring Rita's blazing gaze on her.
Thank you so much for the reviews on the last chapter, it keeps me writing and I really do appreciate it. Still desperately hoping for carter to come back soo, it has been SO long and I've just genuinely fell out of love with corrie at the moment.
Would also just want to address the review about Tina's character not being right in this. This is a fanfic which means it's not fully accurate and I do my take on things. Characterisation is very important to me though and I try my best to make sure they are all in character but Tina has been away for a few years and has kind of lost the plot and become very fixated on Peter. When writing this, I wanted to make it clear that this is not how it was during the show in 2014 and it is now a lot deeper than that! As time goes on in the story, you might see parts of her character from the actual show return. Hope that makes sense!
I have some very exciting things coming up with this story so this is definitely not the end! Let me know what you think :)
