A/N: Happy Friday my wonderful readers! So what we have here is a shorter chapter, but it's got some cute moments in it. We have Wo and Ro being cute, and Wo and Steve being dicks to one another. Next chapter is going to have all the action in it. This is like the calm before the storm. As always don't forget to leave a review or drop a fav or a follow and I'll see you next week!
Chapter 11
Things had gotten complicated after Wo Fat took his Ro away from Steven McGarrett.
For starters the man had gotten rabid about finding and taking Wo Fat down, which was problematic because he kept finding wherever it was that Wo had stashed Ro.
He had lost two compounds and three safe houses in only four short months. All five building had his Ro in them for some reason or another. The safe houses were where he had her living, the two compounds were housing her between moving safe houses.
It was like the man had some internal compass that led him straight to his sister. Which was stupid because only Wo had one of those.
If it weren't for her powers Steven would have arrested them all by now and found out that Ro was actually alive.
It had gotten so bad that Wo had no choice but to actually move Rowan off island. He put her on his yacht, The Aurelia, took the yacht out into international waters and kept her out there where it was safe.
She hated it. She hated being cooped up in one place for too long, she got bored on the boat quickly, and he wasn't there to run interference as he was still working on the island. The worst of it was that she got motion sick when the boat rocked too much, so on the rough nights it was particularly bad. Luckily, they had lots of sea sickness medicine.
See, Steve wouldn't be able to trace the yacht back to him because it never went into his name. It went into one of Ro's old aliases. And no one knew her old aliases. That was the point.
But Steve didn't quit.
Wo Fat was starting to get annoyed. He kept reminding Ro that she had been clear. If he didn't kill John McGarrett, Five-0 wouldn't be a thing. And yet there they were, dealing with Five-0 and Steven who was always one step closer to fucking with Wo's business, his cover and finding his sister. Every time he brought it up she'd remind him that she didn't know for sure. She didn't even know they were in the pilot until she was in the car.
That up until that point she had completely forgotten the show and Steven McGarrett.
That was fair. After she fell, she had forgotten a lot of things. Like for starters, she couldn't remember the night she actually fell. She remembered going to sleep and then bam, she's in the air falling into the water.
That was a problem, because he was certain something happened. Because those nights, the dark nights, when she was sick and the void was hovering along the edges of her, she'd get flashes. Bit and pieces of memory that would scare her, memories that would leave her as soon as they let her go.
Then she started forgetting things about her life.
She remembered where she came from, but she didn't remember moving from Toronto until Wo Fat took her there. She remembered she was a figure skater, but she didn't remember that she taught lessons until she was helping Con learn to skate.
She forgot people she had met
Like the Stepanovs. All three. Victor the head of the Stepanov crime family and his twins.
Where she came from they had caused her great pain. Victor had forced her to get-away drive in return for not killing her brother over the money they owed. The eldest twin Irina had stabbed her. And she had been in a rather manipulative and he suspected emotionally abusive relationship with the younger of Victor's twins, Roman. Though Ro was in emotionally abusive relationships with everyone in her old life, apparently.
She had not remembered the Stepanovs until Wo Fat introduced them to her. It all came back at once. She shook Roman's hand and just seized. Came to an hour later remembering everything. What she had told him had gotten him so angry that he didn't even care if it wasn't this version of the Stepanovs who had hurt her, he agreed to help them irradicate them.
So it made sense that she didn't remember to remember Steven. But even if she had remembered before she had already been arrested by him so it rendered the point mute.
She figured that the second Wo Fat made the conscious decision to go after John McGarrett Five-0 was destined to start. Except that he had a different theory. He thought that Five-0 became destined to be the second Steve took Ro, because as soon as that happened it meant that Wo Fat was going to get involved to get her back so the pilot was going to happen either way.
And now they were stuck with him and he was driving Wo Fat crazy.
Steve figured out everything. All of Wo Fat's connections, even to the Governor. Wo needed to take him out of the picture.
So he shot Governor Jameson and framed Steve for it.
The man had gone to jail for it and if he was lucky he was going to fucking stay there and Wo Fat could finally get some work done.
But since he had gone to jail, or more aptly since Steve had come into her life, Ro was getting more and more flashes of the TV show she had forgotten about.
But her insisting that he go to the prison to visit with him was not linked to those visions. In fact, she thought he should go to simply gloat.
He was really regretting teaching her all about psychological warfare. Firstly, because she already did that, she just didn't know the name of it, and secondly because she had gotten better at it with his coaching.
He would have preferred it if his sister stayed out of the family business all together.
But that day he had to go to the mainland anyway. He had the Governor's funeral to go to and he to pick up supplies. He also needed to go to the prison to talk to Hesse, who he had personally seen to being incarcerated. He had gotten him out of jail once, but then he went after Five-0 and got caught again, after that Wo Fat refused to help him.
Hesse refused to take that as reality though, kept calling Wo to ask him for help, and after he had said no again, he had brought Ro into the equation again. So, to protect her, he agreed to start working on a plan to break him out. Except Wo wasn't going to play nice about it.
He also figured if he was going to go to the prison then he might as well see Steve. Get some of that gloating in.
So when it came to the morning he got himself ready and then went into Ro's room to tell her where he was going and to ask if there was any last minute things she wanted to add to the list.
When he got there she was still asleep, lying there on her stomach, lightly breathing. She was gripping both her pillow and little white stuffed bunny that she had personally stolen out of her mother's house when they fled Victoria three years ago.
Ro's trauma around being kidnapped and his self defence lessons meant if he startled her awake she'd lash out and he was not getting sacked today. So, he carefully traced the line from the bridge of her nose to the tip of her nose and back up until her eyebrows furrowed. Then he just faintly rubbed the tip of her nose until her eyes opened.
She looked up at him with those narrowed blue eyes of her and he smiled down to her.
"What's the matter?" she asked stretching out carefully. "Are we compromised?"
That was a pretty calm way to ask that question. Especially because if they were compromised, he would have woken her up and rushed her to get ready. Though they all had to-go bags packed for that reason.
Also they were on a boat, so that meant they'd be rushing to get her into the secret stash compartment within the smugglers hold to keep her safe.
"No. I have the Governor's funeral today, I'm going to pick up supplies too, is there anything else you need on the list?"
Ro took the list from him and squinted at it. "Yeah, flowers."
"Everything I buy you, you kill," he said because the girl was the opposite of a green thumb. She also never wanted cut flowers, she wanted the flowers in a pot that you were supposed to be able to keep alive. She just never kept them alive.
Didn't mean he wouldn't buy them for her anyway.
"Not for me. For the funeral. You have to give her flowers."
"I am not wasting money buying that woman flowers…"
"You killed that woman the least you could do is give her flowers if you're going to have the audacity to show up at her funeral like it wasn't you who pulled the trigger," she snapped and he sighed at her.
He wouldn't tell her but he would pick up a tasteful bouquet.
"Fine. Oh, and I'm going to the prison, so I might be late."
"Oh? The prison? Why?" she asked. "Are you going to take my advice?"
"No, I have to see Hesse," he snapped but when she just stared at him he sighed and said: "Okay yes, but no gloating." She smiled and made an x over her heart, to signify that she was promising him she wouldn't. Despite himself he found himself reaching out again to brush her hair back. "Behave while I'm gone. Can you do that?"
"I can."
"Don't give Con any trouble."
"Can't promise that part."
"Well, you better, cause we both know he doesn't like boats, so he's in a really bad mood as is," he reminded her. Ro nodded because it wasn't likely that she'd forget that their highly skilled assassin was terrified of the ocean and water and boats. "If I come back and he's got you tied up because you were being obnoxious, I'm not going to yell at him this time."
"Okay," she said rolling over and away from him. She reached out for her little white stuffed rabbit and tucked it into her chest.
That was a sign that she was tired and getting ready to go back to sleep. She often used her tiredness as a reason why she hadn't heard him and therefore hadn't obeyed.
"I'm serious Ro."
"Okay, Wo," she said again. "Have fun tormenting Steven."
He stood there for a little while, watching as her breathing eventually evened out. He was going to have to see about potentially taking her to the doctor, she shouldn't be as tired as she was. Either she was sick or depressed again, either way she needed someone to look at her.
He leant over her, pressing the softest of kisses to her temple, just so he could watch the way her lips would curl up in a sleepy smile.
She was the only one he was affectionate with. The only one he'd ever be affectionate with, and because she was starved for affection he did his best to give her as much as he could. She was always okay with whatever he had to offer but he knew it wasn't ever enough.
He'd just tell Con to cuddle with her today, and on the way back from the prison he'd pick something up for her. Dim Sum and flowers, or maybe a new dress. Or better yet a new pair of Louboutin red-bottom heels.
He'd figure it out on the way back.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
Steve was in a pretty dark place.
Both literally and figuratively.
For starters he was in prison, Halawa specifically, for a murder he got framed for. A murder he didn't commit.
He was there, stuck, unable to find the man who actually like Governor Jameson, while that man walked free.
His dad had called in his training officer Joe White, Five-0 had been disbanded, IA was after Kono, Chin got promoted to HPD, and Danny had been let go. Still they were trying to find anything that would prove that Wo Fat was the one who killed the governor and not Steve. But they still had nothing.
The man who had been behind his mother's murder, who had almost killed his dad, who had killed Rory, and then framed him and put him in jail was still out there.
Yeah, Steve was in one hell of a dark place.
He kept saying no visitors but people kept coming. Danny, his dad, Joe, they all kept coming and bothering him. He didn't want them in there visiting him he wanted them out there trying to find Wo Fat. But there they were.
And deep down he actually kind of liked getting visitors.
Who would have thought that Steve would look forward to having Danny visiting? What a turn of events.
That day Danny had come in and then surprised him by showing him that Joe White had coerced him into getting Steve out of his cell. The bastard. See, now he didn't like Danny visiting him anymore.
The two of them talked about how the new Governor was moving up his trial because he was a zero-tolerance kind of guy. Convicting Steve of Governor Jameson's murder was going to be his first order of business.
Well, Joe White was there to make sure that didn't happen.
They concluded the visit and Steve was taken back to his cell only for another guard to show up and tell him he had yet another visitor.
Wow he was popular today.
He was walked back to the visitor's room except this time no one else was there. No other prisoners, no other guards, and that meant on either side of the glass, and no other visitors. He was alone and that didn't bode well at all.
He was showed to a booth and he froze when he saw who was waiting for him.
Because it was Wo fucking Fat sitting there phone already to his ear.
That stupid fucking smug smile on his face.
For a long while Steve just stared at him. The gall, the absolute gall this man had to show up there. He wanted to walk away. He really did. Except the man was there, taunting him and the guard was clearly on the payroll because he hadn't backed down.
He forced Steve to sit in the chair and only then did he back away. Steve refused to look Wo Fat in the face. Refused to pick up the phone and Wo Fat just sat their patiently.
Well, he clearly wasn't going away. So, Steve would really have no choice.
Steve eventually picked up the phone and said: "You have got to be shitting me."
"No. I can assure you I am not," Wo said. "And how are you, Commander?"
"I'm in jail," he snapped. "For a murder you committed."
"Well, I did tell you that chasing this line of inquiry would not end well for you," he said and Steve just glared at him.
"What do you want? Why are you here?" Steve snapped.
"Just checking in on progress," he said and Steve knew what that really meant.
"You're here to taunt me."
"Right well maybe I am…" he said with a shrug.
"You think this is going to stop me? You think I won't be able to prove what you did? Governor Jameson, Rory, my mom, I'm going to prove you killed them all and take you down." Wo Fat just stared at him and Steve stared back. Wo Fat didn't seem concerned in anyway. But Steve was burning.
This was the man who took Rory from him and then dumped her in the ocean like trash. And he didn't know why he did it. And he needed to know why, why someone as vibrant and… special as Rory had to die. Not when Wo Fat had seemingly cared so much for her. How had the man who looked at her like she was his world managed to kill her?
"Why did you do it?" Steve suddenly asked. "Rory… why did… how could you? She was…. Basically harmless. She barely knew anything about your operation… and you gave me the evidence back why trade it back for her if you were going to kill her? Why did she…. She didn't deserve to…"
Steve just trailed off because Wo Fat was looking at him confused.
"What?" Wo Fat asked. "Who are you talking about?"
"RORY!" Steve shouted. "Master's girl."
Wo Fat stared at him for a second and then recognition lit up on his face. "Oh! You mean Ro. She's not…" and then he trailed off. His face fell back to that normal passiveness. "Why are we talking about Ro?"
"Because you killed her!"
The outburst didn't phase Wo Fat in the slightest, in fact in only made his eyes narrow at him.
"You have a strange obsession with that girl… is there a particular reason why?" Steve's mouth dropped in shock and then Wo Fat made it worse by asking: "Did you fuck her?"
Steve stared at him, his mouth open in utter horrified shock. This seriously was not happening. Did that man seriously just ask what he thought he asked?
"Did I… no I am not obsessed!" he cried. "I promised her that she would be safe. I promised… and you slit her throat and dumped her in the ocean!"
Wo was looking confused again and then it was like a light went off in his brain. "Right yes. I did do that."
"How… how can you be so… blasé about killing her?"
"It's not exactly an uncommon event, Steven…"
"And what do you think the Master will do when he finds out? That man was lethal about one thing and it was her. What do you think he'll do to you when he finds out you murdered her?"
"The Master doesn't think I did it. He thinks you did. Wonder what he'll do to you when he gets a chance," he said softly with that same dangerous smile on his face. "Well, enjoy your day McGarrett. I hear you're going to be given an hour of sunlight. What a treat. Wouldn't want to keep you from it."
And then he hung up the phone.
Steve was left sitting there stewing in his own anger as Wo Fat walked out of there a free man.
But the joke was on Wo Fat, because that hour out in the yard. It was how he ended up escaping from prison.
