Chapter 15

Two years ago

Sin Nombre was considered the best of the best.

He boasted about his 100% kill streak. That meant 100 percent of the people he said he was going to kill, died by his hand.

He was an expert in hand-to-hand combat and sniper shots. He was lethal, he was a badass, and because of that he got the best gigs, and earned the big cash.

And since he was the best of the best, he wanted to work with the best of the best.

So when he heard that Wo Fat was hiring a bodyguard he was interested.

You see, Wo Fat had made a name for himself. He was ruthless, cold, calculated and uncaring. He usually based his work in China, Japan and Hawaii. But something had happened in China a year ago and he had left. Just dropped all his lines there and moved into Colombia.

At first, he hadn't been taken seriously but then he took out most of Diego's operation and suddenly he became hot shit.

And for some reason he couldn't keep a bodyguard.

No one Sin Nombre asked could tell him why, but whatever happened on that gig was enough to traumatize them. One of his good friend's, a Cartel enforcer with the nickname Chainsaw, had come off the gig less than 24 hours later with two broken legs and unable to walk.

He couldn't say what happened either. Wo Fat had sworn him to secrecy, but whatever it was had scared him. Sin Nombre could see it in his eyes.

So when that offer was finally relayed to him, he was curious. Curious to see what it was about this man's operation that had him losing a bodyguard a day.

He was invited to his compound in the middle of the jungle. The security around it was clearly over kill. There were guns mounted to the roof, roving guards, a large electrified fence.

What was this? A prison?

He was shown into the house by a massive muscle bound man in a baggy suit. He was then taken to a library where Wo Fat was moving around packing a brief case.

"Sin Nombre to see you Sir," the man said pushing Sin Nombre into the room like a wayward child.

"Thank you," he said. "She up yet?"

"Yes, she's on the trampoline."

Wo Fat sighed. "Flips?"

"Yes, I think she's trying to get to three," he said.

"Great, just great," he growled. "She going to break her fucking neck, I just know it."

Wo Fat already wasn't living up to the hype.

On the outside, he mostly looked as intimidating as Sin Nombre had heard him to be. He was dressed in a grey suit, black button up dress shirt, he could tell the man was packing. So while e looked the part, he didn't sound anything like the cool, suave, calm, deadly man that everyone described him as.

"So, have you decided to take the job?"

"I don't even know what it is."

Wo Fat nodded. "Right. They didn't tell you it's a bodyguard position?"

"No, that part I got, but uh… that's it. And uh, judging by your security, I don't know why you need more?"

"Well, I have a lot to protect," he said which was an odd way of saying that. "I'm not going to lie, this job… not only is it very important, it'll probably be the most dangerous job of your career."

"Yeah, I've heard," he said because the offer had come with a description. Simply put this job was being advertised as complicated, difficult and damn near impossible to survive. And he was willing to shell out an amount of money that had a criminal number of zeroes at the end of it. "Doesn't tell me what it is."

"You're going to be a bodyguard," Wo Fat repeated. "So far no one has been able to keep up, so I'm starting to think it might be impossible to find someone suitable for this position."

"I mean… I've been a bodyguard for other Cartel bosses, I don't see how much different working for you would be."

"Uh… cause you wouldn't be shadowing me," he said. Walking around the desk he gestured for Sin Nombre to follow him. "The person you'll be watching out for is uh… special. Stubborn, pigheaded, hyper active, escape artist. I've also been told they're very annoying. I was specifically told to tell others that they're very annoying."

"Okay… that doesn't sound that hard…"

He was following Wo Fat through the house to a kitchen where a door to the backyard was. There was a girl bouncing on the trampoline that seemed to have his attention.

"Yeah that's what everyone says," he said. "You interested or not?"

"I mean… yeah…"

"You sure? Cause if you agree to this, you'll be stuck with her for the rest of today."

Sin Nombre's eyes darted to the girl on the trampoline who flawlessly completed a double flip before going back to bouncing.

This was all about a girl? Wo Fat was trying to protect a girl?

"Yeah, I'm sure I can handle a girl."

Wo Fat simply nodded and then turned away. He opened the door and whistled, which was apparently ignored. "Hey! You!" he shouted and the girl on the trampoline stopped bouncing. "Front and center, right now."

"Kay, give me five minutes, I wanna see if I can…"

"Now!" Wo Fat thundered and the girl groaned and rolled her eyes at him. But she got off the trampoline and jogged over to him.

"Kitchen, go," he ordered.

That earned him another eye roll and then she was heading towards him. She stopped short of the kitchen and just stared at him.

She was small, thin, perky breasts. She had shoulder length black hair that she had to have straightened to get it that straight. She was just this average little college aged white girl. The only extraordinary thing about her was her eyes. They were altogether too blue.

She looked him up and down and then turned to Wo Fat who was shutting the door. She didn't have to say anything to him, she merely had to pin him with a concerned stare and the man just understood what was wrong.

"This is Sin Nombre, he's just agreed to be your new bodyguard." He then looked to Sin Nombre. "This is Ro. You're in charge of keeping her out of trouble."

"His name is No Name?" she asked. "You can't have no name. Everyone has a name."

Ah so she knew Spanish. Interesting.

And he might have harped a little more on that if it weren't for the fact that he felt like laughing. Like literally laughing in Wo Fat's face, because this flimsy little thing could not be what was traumatizing everyone.

"I'm sorry, your super dangerous, impossible mission is watching this… this… barbie doll?"

"I'm not a doll, I'm a real living…" the girl started but Wo Fat just cut her right off.

"Yes. Last guy lasted all of twelve hours. Broke both of his legs in multiple places, please try to at least make it one day?"

"Chainsaw's last job was her?" he cried, he then turned to her with new eyes. "What the hell did you do to him?"

"Nothing," Ro said. "It was just a driving lesson…"

"You threw him from the car and then ran him over. Twice," Wo snapped and then turned to Sin Nombre. "Don't let her drive, and if you do buckle in."

He reached out and gripped the point of her chin. "You. Behave," he ordered and then he turned back to Sin Nombre and put a hand on his shoulder. "Good luck."

And then Sin Nombre was left with the girl who was apparently the impossible mission everyone had been so scared of.

H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O

Well Wo Fat had been right about one thing. The girl was annoying.

And a hazard.

In the seven hours he had been working with her she had literally bounced off of that trampoline and into him when she landed wrong. She walked into the pool because she hadn't been paying attention when on the phone with Wo at Lunch. Then almost walked into a column. He caught her playing with knives that he figured was probably a very stupid thing to allow her to do.

He kept losing her in the house. One moment she'd be behind him and then suddenly she'd be gone. He'd have to search the rooms until he found her.

She talked nonstop. Like literally could not get her to shut up. And she was cuddly. She kept trying to give him hugs or high-fives. She gave him a nickname within the first hour. NA, she said, cause his name was Not Applicable.

And while she was annoying, she hadn't been all that terrible. Nothing traumatizing had happened so far.

Until she locked him out of the house.

She did another one of her disappearing acts, he went out the front door to see if she had gone out that way as he swore he heard the door close. But the second he got out the door shut behind him and then locked.

He banged on the door for a bit, realized that that was stupid. Went around back but she had managed to lock all the doors and the windows. He was going to have to break into the damn house.

How stupid was that?

He went around the front again because that was the easiest place to break in, it had the most windows and the flimsiest door.

But as he was round the corner he heard.

"Alright, nothing to it, all you gotta do is jump."

Now see, that, that was Ro's voice.

Sin Nombre looked around, all around and when he couldn't spot her he looked up. There she was on the roof, a backpack on her back. A really bulky one.

Sin Nombre stumbled away from the house to get a better look at her and what she was doing. But he still couldn't figure out what she was doing.

"What… what are you doing?" he called up to her.

Ro didn't even look down at him. "This is clearly an experiment," she called back.

What? What the fuck that did mean?

"Okay, and what experiment are you performing?"

"I wanna see if this old World War II era parachute works."

What?!

"Okay, no, no, no, let's not do that," Sin Nombre cried. "That thing's over 50 years old. It probably had a 50-50 chance of working when they made it, it's gonna be worse now!"

"Nonsense. It'll be fine!"

"Ro! I'm serious. This is a direct order!"

"Psh. I don't take my orders from you!"

Holy shit this girl was going to kill herself. She was going to die on his watch, the first bodyguard to let her die. Wo Fat was probably gonna kill him.

"Ro! Don't. I'm serious!" he called up to her. "Even if that chute opens it won't be able to hold you up!"

Ro got out of her jump position. She straightened and then put her hands on her hips. "Did you just call me fat?"

"If it'll keep you from jumping, then fucking yes!"

She gasped loudly which was then followed by a cry of: "Rude!"

"Look, my one job! My one job… is keeping you from fucking getting hurt and you're legit about to jump off a building. I don't care if you think I'm rude! Get off that fucking roof!"

"Okay!"

"I don't mean jump!"

"You are literally no fun!" she called down to him and Sin Nombre had to bite back the roar of frustration.

See he couldn't break into the house because he knew if he took his eyes off of this stupid girl she was going to jump. And he knew if something happened to that girl on his watch that dangerous, cold, lethal Wo Fat was going to come right back and make him pay.

"I swear to god if you don't get off this roof I'm going to shoot you. Do you hear me. I swear to god I will shoot you I don't care what that man does to me…"

"What the hell are you doing?" Wo Fat asked and Sin Nombre turned around.

"Uh…. Nothing…"

"You're outside screaming at the roof, did she lock you out?" he asked.

Oh. So this was something she does? She just locks people out?

"Uh… no… it's fine, I've got this handled…"

"ROWAN HAZEL PEIRCE!" Wo Fat suddenly thundered and Sin Nombre turned. That was her real name? Here he was thinking that Ro was frozen on the roof in crouched position. "You get down from that roof, right this instant, and don't you dare jump!"

"Aww…. But… I wanna see if the parachute…"

"That parachute is from World War II! You won't have enough velocity to catch enough air in your chute to float, you idiot, if you jump you're gonna break your legs, or your spine, and then what? hmm?"

"Fine," she grumbled, and then she looked around. "Uh… Wo…."

Wo sighed, hands on his hips glaring up at her. "You're stuck, aren't you?"

"It is a lot easier getting up then it is getting down."

"God I swear," he said storming for the house leaving Sin Nombre standing there wondering what the hell had just happened.

H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O

Once Wo Fat came back it was easier to control his girl. Though she was still as ridiculously wild in that cute-sie sort of way of hers. Wo Fat just kind of let her get away with it, in this frustrating kind of way. In the sense that he was horribly frustrated with her but she amused him.

And yet he still let her get away with almost everything.

Wo Fat also wouldn't let him talk to him until after dinner, when Ro was sent up to her room and he was moving into the library again.

Sin Nombre followed him back into the library.

"Whiskey?" he asked. Sin Nombre nodded and then accepted the tumbler that Wo Fat eventually handed him.

For a moment they were quiet and then he said: "Well, you survived the first day…"

"No offense, but there's something wrong with your girlfriend."

"Nope, not my girlfriend," he said quickly. Nothing about how she's not crazy? Right, so he figured that there was something wrong with her, at least he was aware.

"Where did she even get the parachute?"

Wo Fat was busy pouring himself a drink. "It was uh… it was in the attic."

"You let her go into the attic?"

"No. T-bone did. It's also how we lost T-bone." He then turned back to Sin Nombre. "Want one?"

"Sure." Sin Nombre then blinked his eyes. "Wait a second… T-bone had a broken arm… how did she break his arm?"

"He fell through the attic floor," he said. "She went through first, leg only, of course. He went to get her and went all the way through. He lasted three days."

Sin Nombre struggled to keep back his laughter. T-bone had always had hard luck.

"You did well, considering. It get's easier with practice, you'll do better tomorrow," he said as he headed towards the window for some reason.

"I'm sorry but I'm not doing this a second day. That girl is loco," he snapped. "I don't care how much money it is, I'm not a babysitter. And I'm not equipped to handle that level of crazy…"

"Fine, I can let you out of the contract if you so wish," he said absently as he stared out the window. Sin Nombre scoffed, there was no official contract. He watched as Wo Fat took a long sip of the amber liquid in his crystal glass before saying: "Any chance you can deal with the tactical team we have moving on the house before you go though?"

Sin Nombre frowned, he moved to join him at the window and he saw what Wo Fat saw, people moving through the shadows, all in tactical gear, all heading for the back of the house.

Holy. Shit.

Why was Wo Fat so calm about this? He literally just handed him the glass of whiskey he had poured Sin Nombre as if they didn't have a threat moving in on their location.

"They're heading for Ro's room," he said turning away. He swiped his rabbit mask off the desk. "You sit on her, I'll flank em from the outside."

"There's got to be more than twenty people…"

"I can handle it!" he called before rushing out of the room.

Oh this was going to be fun!

H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O

That twenty person tactical team was easy to take out. He was worried, originally when they got into the house, but Wo Fat dealt with them and even though Ro had been clear that she didn't like blood apparently, she had been more than helpful.

He would have thought that, after that attack, she wouldn't be able to sleep, but no. Ro slept on Wo Fat's lap that night. Or well, her head was on his lap.

He sat in his library on the couch, her head in his lap, an arm draped over her arm while Sin Nombre looked over the clean up.

By morning Wo Fat had fallen asleep in his uncomfortable position, but Ro had woken up.

She came out of the library with a hand clasped over her eyes. "Are all the bodies gone?"

"Yeah, you're good."

Ro removed that hand right away and then she smiled at him. She was always smiling, he was starting to think that this girl just wasn't scared of anything.

"Thanks so much for last night," she said moving in right away to hug him. "You really are the best."

"You're uh… you're welcome."

"Uhm… I was going to make breakfast, did you want some? Eggs? Pancakes maybe?"

"Sure… I'll eat anything," he said.

"Oh great! I'll just make all our favourites!" she said heading towards the kitchen. And then she came to a stop. "Uhm… Sin Nombre?" he turned back to her and she smiled again. "I know I'm hard to handle… and I'm annoying and… well… thanks for sticking around."

And then she skipped away.

Sin Nombre blinked his eyes, wow, what a guilt trip. He couldn't look at that cute little girl and tell her that he was leaving after that. He should have though cause it was going to make things weirder when he did leave.

He could just leave without saying good bye though. That would work. He'd feel like shit but it would work.

He walked into the library and found that Wo Fat was still sleeping, he tapped the man's shoulder and he jolted awake.

"Put down that grenade!" he shouted and then he turned his tired eyes up to Sin Nombre. "She in the kitchen?" He nodded and Wo Fat sunk back into the couch. "She better be making me breakfast."

My god, this girl was running the poor man ragged. Sin Nombre could see flecks of silver in the man's hair, she must have been really stressing him out.

Eventually he got up, stretched out his back before, focusing in on Sin Nombre.

"Am I to assume that the clean up is done?"

"It is."

"Right, let me sort out your payment and then you can go."

"Uhm, yeah about that… she invited me to breakfast…"

"Then you can go after breakfast," he said, moving a painting to reveal a safe. Right so he was going to pay him right then and there.

"How often do people come after Ro?"

Wo Fat paused, turned back to him with narrowed eyes before saying: "Uh… more often then I'd like to admit. I'd love to know what they're fascination with her is but uh…"

"Dude, anyone can see it," he said. "She's your weakness. That's why people keep coming for her."

He expected push back but Wo Fat just sighed. "I know," he whispered. "But if I send her away well… you saw what it's like when I'm not here. Without someone to manage her that girl runs wild. She doesn't make rational decisions, just impetuous ones and well…"

He liked her. Maybe not romantically, but he enjoyed her company.

"It's not all that, I also happen to know a few attempts were made by my ex who's jealous," he said. "Regardless, she's picked up interest now that I've gained… traction…"

Sin Nombre thought about it for a moment. "And I mean… you said it gets easier as time goes on? I mean she's fine with you right?"

Wo Fat hung the picture back up and turned to him. "Yes?"

"Right, so… say I stick around… would the pay stay the same?"

"Uh… yes?"

"Cool…" he said. "So uhm… I'll stay. Just a little longer. Until you can find someone else."

Wo Fat nodded offering the man a hand to shake.

Except there never was anyone else. Sin Nombre signed on and stayed on.

If you had told him then that two years later, he'd be working basically for free and calling Ro his sister and Wo Fat his brother he'd have called you crazy.

He didn't know it yet, but he had just met the two people who would eventually become he only family he had left.

And there wasn't anything he wouldn't do to protect his family.
