Chapter 32
Two years ago
Wo Fat woke up to his head ringing and his stomach protesting. Someone had tazed him, he knew that much, but outside of that he didn't know what was going on.
He didn't know who took him, or where he was, but he knew he was in trouble.
They had him tied to his chair. He was alone in a dark dingy room, which was also worrying because he hadn't been alone when he was tazed.
He had Sin Nombre with him.
Normally Sin Nombre stayed with Ro but Wo Fat had needed him for a meeting. He wanted the extra muscle, and he figured Ro fine on her own for a few hours.
She and Sin Nombre were getting too close anyway. Ro, being the cuddly person that she was, was always all over him, and he was equally as interested in keeping her close to him. Wo Fat had been clear that Sin Nombre was not allowed to sleep with Ro, and the man was adamant that he wasn't interested in her sexually, but the constant cuddling meant he was keeping her close and she wasn't running around getting in trouble.
Also, in true Ro fashion, she had given the man like six different nicknames. Well two, but still that was a lot. Sin Nombre had a lot of aliases as is it was.
First she called him NA, because his name was not applicable. But then she started calling him Conejo which was rabbit in Spanish, before shortening it to the name that she used most frequently now, which was Con. However, only Ro could use those nicknames. Wo Fat wasn't allowed to until Sin Nombre deemed him worthy.
But now, now he was in that room, his head pounding with no idea how long she had been alone for. A Ro that was alone, was a Ro that got into trouble.
Now he was the one in trouble.
He just didn't know how much trouble he was in, or if he could get both himself and Sin Nombre out of this.
He hadn't even made it to the meeting. They had been jumped while in transit. His car had been rammed, both him and Sin Nombre had gotten out to deal with on coming forces and they had been doing well, even though smoke grenades had been thrown at them to throw them off their game. Well, they had been doing well all the way up until someone snuck up on him and tazed him.
Wo Fat was a little worried that all his time with Ro was making him soft.
But then the door opened and in walked in Carlos Diego. Yeah, he didn't have time to worry about going soft anymore.
It suddenly all made sense, Wo Fat had been causing the man all sorts of trouble recently. He would want him to stop, and no doubt thought this was the best way to do it.
However, Wo Fat was uncertain why he was alive. The smartest thing to do would have been to shoot him. Grabbing him and bringing him to wherever they were would serve no purpose. It would also give Wo Fat the chance to escape.
He waited for Carlos to say something, but he didn't say a thing. He did, however, punch him. Right in the face.
Right. So that's how this was gonna go.
And it was how it went.
Carlos continued to beat on him until he felt better. At least that's what Wo figured.
When he finally stopped he smiled down at Wo in this almost cruel way.
"I've got some men in with your pet Rabbit, see if we can teach him some manners," he said. He snapped his fingers and the door opened again. This time to allow someone to wheel a TV in.
He wanted him to watch a video?
He noted that in a room across the hall, another TV was going in.
"Don't worry, your Rabbit gets to watch too."
He clearly wanted him to ask what he was watching, but he wasn't going to give him the satisfaction.
The TV was set up in front of him, and turned on but all that was on the screen was the floor of a van and different shoes.
Carlos took the remote and flicked, same van floor, same different shoes, all front different perspectives.
It was a tactical team with body cameras.
A lot of questions ran through his mind. Why a tactical team? Where we they going? What the hell did they want him to watch?
But then he got it.
He turned his eyes up to Diego, saw that cruel smile on his face, and knew right away that they were heading to that compound in the jungle he had stashed his Ro in.
"Oh that's right. You thought I was beat. You thought I was pulling back. You thought it was safe to leave your puta all alone in that big house out there. But it wasn't. And I'm going to make you watch what they do to her. You're both going to watch."
Oh god, oh god, oh god, oh god, oh god.
This was not good. In fact, he'd go as far as to say that it was worse. So much worse. But he knew saying something, showing any sign of emotion, would be letting Carlos win. Because the name of this game was psychological torture, and it was, honestly the worst kind of torture.
So he just had to sit there, trying to mask his emotions and watch as his worst nightmare unfolded in front of his very eyes.
He watched them get out of the van. He watched them mow through all his security. He watched them break down the door to house and fan out.
He also got to watch the second they found Rowan.
Who had been attempting to climb out the window of her room when they got to her.
That meant he had to watch as they ripped her out of the window and to the ground. It also meant that he had to watch as she tried to fight back.
It did not go well.
She got one stiff backhand to the face and that was her down, probably stunned.
Already he was not doing well, if this video had sound it'd be worse. The second she got hit he winced, his whole body tensed. They might as well have hit him again. He would have rathered they hit him instead.
He hated that she looked that scared. He hated that he wasn't there to help her. He hated that this was happening because he hadn't protected her right.
It felt like his heart was going to rip apart right there in his chest, his stomach was in knots. He was roiling between anger and fear. For the first time in his life he felt the desire to beg.
To beg them not to hurt her.
Illogically he felt he might cry.
Then he watched one of the men pick her up and throw her onto the bed. And that fear turned into icy dread.
Because he knew what they were going to make him watch next and he knew he'd break if that's what it was going to be.
He turned to Diego who was still smiling at him, taking such joy from what was probably the worst form of torture he could have ever put Wo Fat through. He was about to beg when something on the camera caught his eye.
It was a ripple in the feed, like interference.
He turned, eyes narrowed in confusion. The man in front of Rowan moved away from her, which was not expected.
There was a secondary ripple, one that actually put static through the picture, and combined with Wo Fat's confused look, Diego was finally paying attention.
Something was wrong with Rowan, something was wrong in the way she was moving. Jerking like her limbs weren't in her control. She sat up, vertebrae by vertebrae, straightening like something out of the exorcist. Her head was tilted back until it all a sudden tilted forward.
Her eyes were black.
Like the all white he was used to when the void took over, except this time… this time they were black.
Her face contorted into this terrible snarled, and then she charged the man.
The screen erupted into white static-y snow.
Feed was dead. Simple.
Diego switched to a different body cam but it too was nothing but static. He flipped to another one. This guy was on the ground, scrambling away.
Rowan was standing over one guy. She stomped down on his chest and he vanished. Just gone. Completely gone. No portal or nothing, man just disappeared into a ball of strings, coming apart like he was a yarn toy, though the strings vanished before they hit the ground.
She turned, kicked in the camera's direction and it too went dead.
Diego's face was ashen. He was starting to realize that he had made a mistake. He had reasonably thought Rowan to be defenceless without Wo Fat.
She was proving him wrong.
For the next five minutes Wo Fat watched with smug satisfaction as Diego flipped through each body cam feed, watching as Rowan took out each and every man he had sent down there.
Eventually he had nothing but white snow on every channel he flipped to and Wo Fat could sense that he was getting really worried about what was happening.
"What is she? Some kind of witch?" he asked Wo Fat.
"Some kind," he whispered cause, well, let's be honest it was easier.
Diego must not have liked the smirk on his face because he hit him again, but Wo Fat was laughing. He couldn't help it, because now, now Diego was scared.
"She can't get to you here."
But he was wrong.
How wrong exactly? Well…
Across the hall came the tell-tale sound of static, and then screaming that was immediately cut off. Diego turned to the door, shoved the TV before it, as if that was going to keep her out.
He pulled a gun out and pointed it at the door.
Again, like she was going to come through that door.
His Ro was smarter than that.
The portal opened right across from him, and gunshots were heard. Diego went down and Sin Nombre came out first. He crossed to him and shot two more times, and then finally Ro was coming out of the portal, her hands over her eyes.
Great she was worrying about dead bodies now. Now was not the time.
"He dead?" she asked.
"He's dead," Sin Nombre confirmed and then turned to Wo. "She has fucking powers?! Would have been nice if you told me about that."
Wo had no words, he was just happy to see that they were both okay. Or at least he thought they looked okay. Sin Nombre was pretty badly beat up, but he wasn't showing any signs of being in pain.
From the other side of the door they heard shouts echoing down the hallway. Sin Nombre went to brace the door and Rowan went for him.
"Are you okay?" he asked as she came to kneel in front of him. She started first by getting his feet untied.
"I should be asking you that," she said, her eyes refusing to look at him. "You're the one all bloody."
Sin Nombre opened the door, rapid fire shot four times and then closed the door. Both Ro and Wo Fat turned back to him and he stared at them right back, almost blankly. "What? They're down, but we're still in a rush here. You got him untied yet or not?"
Ro turned back around to finish the job, but she also refused to look at him while she got his hands untied. When they were free he grabbed her, pulling her to him and hugging him tightly.
"Are you okay?" he asked again, his voice hitching indicating that he was freaking out about this more than he had wanted to let on. She was always so much better at picking up on those clues because she got it immediately, hugging him back.
"I'm okay," she said but then she started to shake and he knew that, while she was physically fine, she wasn't emotionally.
There came the clatter of more people and Wo straightened. Sin Nombre turned around. "We've got more incoming."
He went to drag Wo out of his chair and instead Wo hugged him. "Are you okay?"
He had the same sort of bruises and bleeding that he had but Sin Nombre hugged him back briefly and said: "Yeah I'm okay… we're gonna be less okay if they catch us though."
He turned to Rowan right away. "Get us out of here," he ordered reaching out for her so she could be beside him.
By the time the men got that door open Ro's portal was open and the three were vanishing through it.
After that, she was given a new name that spread through the criminal underworld like wildfire. And no matter how much Ro wanted to go back to being the Professional, from then on, they all called her La Bruja.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
Wo Fat hadn't wanted to return back to the compound that had just been breeched, so he had called in a favour with Diaz, who he was down there helping in the first place, to use one of his safe houses.
They used Rowan's powers to move everything of important from their compound to the safe house and then Rowan basically passed out. Completely and utterly wiped out from using so much power.
Wo Fat wanted to ask what the darkness was, but she was sleeping and he had bigger things to deal with.
For starters, Armando sent him a doctor to look them over, which he did, and then he had him look over Rowan, just to make sure she was okay.
While the doctor was with Rowan he got to corner Sin Nombre and explain the whole powers thing. Sin Nombre very happily mentioned that the darkness melted off of her the second she dispatched the two men in his room. Then she had seemed somewhat confused as to where she was but she had snapped to it pretty quickly seeing as Sin Nombre had needed her at that time.
He also said that, after this, Wo Fat could call him Con. Wo Fat had been secretly rather pleased with that.
Eventually the doctor came out, told them that Rowan was most likely concussed, and needed rest and that was it for the day.
Sin Nombre, now Con, went off to make food, and Wo Fat was going to do what he wanted to do when this all started. He was going to check on his sister.
"How are you?" Wo asked as he let himself into her room. "Are you… did they…."
"Nope, I'm all intact if that's what you're asking. I did… however… kind of loose track of what I was doing."
"Yes, Con mentioned," he whispered. She hit him with a bit of a quizzical stare and he said: "He says I'm allowed now."
"Ah."
He came to sit down beside her. "Do you know what happened to the men you were dealing with?"
"Uhm… I have a vague recollection of dropping one guy into shark infested waters… uhm… I think… I think I made someone else not… not exist…" that must have been the guy she turned into strings. "And uh… everyone else I can remember, I'm pretty sure are all dead but I'm not sure where they went."
Wo nodded, that sounded fair. "A few got away," he admitted. "They're calling you the witch."
"Great." Well it was better than the alternative. "Did Con ask you about me?"
"He did."
"And… how did he take it?"
"Well, actually." He had been surprised by how well he had taken it actually. "I explained and he just nodded and said that makes sense."
"Wow."
"Well he did witness it first hand, so… I unno…" Wo said with a shrug moving to sit beside her on the bed.
"So uhm…" he started and she turned to him. "I… I'm not good at this, so if I do it wrong, don't get mad."
"Okay?"
"Okay," he said and then took a deep breath and said: "I think I love you."
Rowan stared at him wide eyed clearly having not expected that.
"Okay… uh… really?"
"Yeah. Like… like a sister," he said and she deflated.
"Oh thank god, thought you were saying something else."
"No. Ew. You're like… 15 years younger than me. No," he said. "But you are my responsibility and… well… after all of that… uh… it's clear I more than care about your wellbeing, and uh…. People are starting to realize that… so… uhm… yeah."
Ro immediately hugged him. "And I care about your wellbeing too. And you already know I think of you as a big brother so… now we're all on the same page. Cause… you know… I love you too."
He just smiled at her. She was such a nice person. She had all of this light and love in her, it made no sense as to why the world kept trying to beat her down, why she hadn't been good enough for her mother. Why her brother only seemed interested in using her. Or why the family that pulled her here didn't want her for her.
Well all he could do now was make sure that the world swung a little more in her favour, and that she had someone who wanted her and loved her just the way she was.
"Hey are you two having a heart to heart?"
Both Ro and Wo turned to where Con was standing in the doorway. He too having just finished patching himself up after the beating he had got. He had a bowl in his hand probably filled with pasta as it was his favourite thing, other then fried chicken.
Very nice that he hadn't brought any up for them, but he was usually pretty good about sharing. Their portions were probably still in the kitchen.
"Yeah, what's up?"
"I just wanted to join," he said coming to stand before them. "I uh… I know I haven't been with you guys for too long but uhm… I… I care a lot and…"
"Oh my god!" Ro cried turning a wide grin onto Wo Fat who had no idea what was happening right now.
She kept staring at him like he was supposed to get it but he didn't. "I don't get it."
"He loves me like a sister too!" she cried and Wo Fat frowned at him. Really?
He only had to cock an eyebrow at the younger man and he cracked. "Yeah… well… she grew on me… you… uhm… you both…."
"OMG HE LOVES YOU TOO!"
Wo Fat winced, only because that was so damn loud.
"Jesus, Ro," he snapped. He then glanced at Con. Was that true though? Because… he wasn't all that good at emotions, I took him almost a full year to admit he saw Ro as a sister, and he was only admitting he loved her now, which was a year and a bit later.
He wasn't sure he was ready to have anyone else in his affections.
But Con had gone this pink color which meant that Ro was right and he was embarrassed about it.
Wo Fat reached out for Ro but was too late. She had swooped in and hugged Con without a single pause. "I've got two brothers!"
Yes and both of them were probably better than both version of her brother that she had.
"Right, you, off, he's overwhelmed," Wo ordered, taking a hold of her and pulling her off. "Why don't you go make us tea? Hmm?"
"NAW! I'mma make hot chocolate!" she cried and then scampered off leaving the two of them together.
Con avoided his eyes. "I know you don't…"
Wo just held up a hand to pause him. "I get it. I'm fond of you too. I'm glad that you're okay, but… and I think you might appreciate this, we don't need to talk about our feelings. Especially because she's going to be riding us about them."
Con nodded. "Thanks… but uhm… quick question though… do you uhm… you know…"
Did he feel the same way? For that was what Con was trying to ask. Did he see this person as a little brother?
Maybe not fully, but he did feel a very similar feeling to what he felt for Ro before he realized what that feeling actually meant. He cared if Con was hurt, if he was safe and illogically he cared if he was happy. So maybe he might not have been ready to admit it but it was there.
"Yes, but we never tell Ro. She won't let us live it down."
Con's smile inflated, but he nodded.
"Come on, guys, it's ready!" Ro cried from the kitchen and sighing, the two of them went to join her.
She had made theirs alcoholic. Wo's with his fancy brandy, Con with whiskey. Normally Wo would have been pissed but after what they went through, all that mattered was that she was happy and safe.
And to be fair that hot chocolate was delicious.
