Chapter 33

After Rowan left life sort of went back to normal.

Or as normal as it could be now that his mom had moved back in with him and his dad. She had tried to get her own place originally but John wouldn't allow it. They were still married, technically, seeing as the death do us part thing hadn't actually happened.

It also gave them a chance to get reacquainted to one another on a quicker timeline. Steve could ask his mom whatever questions he had as they came up, and she could choose to answer them if she wanted to.

So far they were at seventy-forty odds that she would answer, so that was pretty good.

Yes, things were going well, until they weren't. He wasn't sure what happened of course, but he came home from work to his dad holding a letter. He had one and Steve had gotten one, and guess what, Doris was gone.

The letter he got didn't explain what was happening, just that there was something Doris had to do and she couldn't take him with her, so she had gone on her own. She promised him she'd be back and that she'd miss him and that there was nothing to worry about, but there was plenty to worry about.

For starters, how could his mom have done this, again? Granted she didn't fake her own death this time, but she still disappeared without a trace, without even a goodbye. And he knew, from Danny's bitching about the letter he had left before running off to Japan to hunt down Wo Fat, that this letter didn't count.

So needless to say he was livid. Absolutely livid that his mother couldn't just communicate with him like a normal fucking person.

He was determined, this time, not to care. If his mom wanted to abandon him again, fine. She was allowed to do that. It wasn't his business anymore.

But then he got home from work to find Catherine on his porch.

He hadn't really ever broken up with Catherine, he had just stopped calling her and seeing her when he had Rowan with him. There were times in between then where he was take Catherine out, if she were free, but really his mind and heart had been on Rowan.

He should have been excited to see her, it would be just another thing to distract him from the fact that Rowan had betrayed him and his mom had abandoned him, but he wasn't excited or happy to see her. He was tired. He wanted to flop down in his laz-e boy, drink a beer and pretend the pain in his chest didn't exist.

She stood up as he got closer to her. "I'm sorry for showing up like this but uh…"

"It's fine, what's going on?"

"It's about your mother."

Steve found himself freezing in place. Great. What happened now?

"My mother?" he echoed, trying to play it off as nonchalantly as he could.

"She's in trouble," she said and Steve had to bite back the urge to groan in frustration. "Last night, Doris tried to break Wo Fat's father out of a CIA blacksite."

Of course she did. Of fucking course this was happening right now.

"The op went sideways. Word is, is that they're holding her until they decide what to do with her. The blacksite is somewhere in Morocco but we're on a time crunch here…"

"I know," he said but now he wasn't quite sure he wanted to go and get her. She had abandoned him again, cause that's what she had done. She could have told him what she was doing, he could have gone with her.

God he wished he could ask his dad what to do, but the man was on the mainland visiting with Mary. He had wanted to get away from the house that was brining up bad memories again. Steve would have gone too if work hadn't caught a case last minute.

But, instinctively he knew that he wouldn't be able to call and him what his father thought. He also knew exactly what it was that he would tell him to do.

"Give me a couple of minutes to pack," he said with a resigned sigh and then he went into the house.

This time, when he left, he was going to call Danny and tell him not to worry. He knew better, now, then to leave a letter.

H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O

Steve never should have called Danny and told him what was going on, because the bastard couldn't keep his mouth shut.

He told Chin and Kono, he even called his dad. And when none of them really knew what had happened other then Steve had left he country for some important, but secret, reason, Danny had tracked his phone.

That's right, Daniel Williams, who was forever going on about how annoying Steve was and how it was an invasion of privacy, tracked his phone, and then had the audacity to fucking follow him. Danny, along with Kono and Chin showed up at the little villa they had rented. They had just gotten the soldier they had snatched up to talk.

They now knew where the blacksite was located and how heavily fortified it was. And let's just say they wouldn't be able to do a full frontal attack like Steve wanted. This was going to have to be a stealth mission.

Danny, Chin and Kono showing meant that they would have more help, which was appreciated. So together they came up with a plan.

Chin was going to cut the power, Kono was going to spot from the vantage point and be their eye in the sky, Steve, Catherine and Danny were going to go into the building. Once the power was off they were going to scale the fence, stick to the shadows and basically get in from there.

And that was exactly what they did.

Kono gave them the go ahead, Chin cut the power, and Steve, Catherine and Danny scaled that usually electrified fence. Once inside they stuck to the shadows, just as planned and made their way to the closest door.

Out of all the things they were expecting when they got there, Wo Fat just leaning against the wall looking around all confused was not one of them.

Steve frowned at him. "What… what are you doing here?"

Wo Fat simply frowned back. "I'm looking for my father, would I be correct in assuming you're here for your mother?"

"I am."

They were all huddled in the dark, trying to make themselves as small as possible. Steve was nervous, his whole team was antsy but Wo Fat seemed far from concerned.

"Seems like we have similar goals."

"No," Wo Fat said, right away. Seemingly understanding where Steve was going with this. "I'm not working with you. You can't make me."

"We're in the same place, with the same goal. It makes no sense working opposite of one another!" Steve hissed and Wo Fat scowled at him. "And look at you, you're alone."

"I am not alone. I have Con here with me and… uh…"

Steve's eyes narrowed at him and hen looked around. "You have Ro here?" he hissed.

Wo Fat just glared at him but said nothing.

"Okay, okay, we're definitely not splitting up, it would be stupid to do so. Especially since we both know the only reason you don't want to work with me is because of Ro."

Wo Fat continued to glare at him, which made sense, because he probably wasn't too pleased with how Steve had treated her the last time he saw them.

"Okay? Agreed? Now… how do you plan to get in there?" Steve asked and then he heard that static again. Wo Fat turned just as the door they were standing beside opened.

Rowan's head popped out and she glanced first to Wo and then Steve. "Huh… when did we team up? I thought you said we'd never."

"Shut up," Wo growled, pushing past her and through the door.

Steve and his team followed. He noted that Catherine seemed far from pleased to see Rowan, but Danny was grinning. He had heard what happened from Steve's mouth himself and he still had the nerve to say: "That's stupid, you love her, why would you have told her you didn't?"

Granted that had been true, but he had wanted Danny on his side, and as per usual he had not been.

Since he had been advocating for Steve and Rowan's eventual reconciliation he must have really been enjoying this.

Steve hadn't quite realized how much he had missed her until this moment. Seeing her again, in black leggings and a black tee-shirt, her red-to-blonde hair up in a high pony tail, was bringing all of those emotions up.

She was ignoring him though, which made it easier for him to focus on the task a head of him.

They were in a control room. There were monitors against the wall, all showing different places in the compound. There was a man on the ground, tied up and unconscious.

"What happened to him?" Danny asked.

"He uh… he got electrocuted."

"Wo Fat gave you a tazer instead of a gun?" Steve asked glaring at them.

"No I don't have a weapon."

"Ro, info please," Wo said and Ro turned around right away.

"Kay, Con's still in sniper position, says we're all good so far, no one on the outside is aware of what's going on right now."

"Good."

"He asked if we met up with the other team, that he's guessing is Steve, and I said yes, and he's laughing," she said. Steve took a good look at her, he couldn't see an ear piece so he had no idea how she was talking to Con at all.

She then pointed to a monitor. "That one's your dad's room. No feed inside though, just the front door," she said and then she pointed a different monitor. "And I was right. Doris is here. That's her room right there."

"That's a cell Ro," Steve said and finally Ro turned back to him.

His faltered under her cool gaze because it wasn't the kind of look he was used to getting from her. "Is that why you're here then? For your mom?"

"Obviously I'm here to help my mom Ro." Her eyes then turned to Catherine who waved at him and then back to Steve. "That's Catherine, you've met Catherine before…"

"Yes I know, I remember. How nice that she was able to come and help you."

"What's going on with these monitors over here?" Danny asked pointing to two black screens.

"Oh… I uh… I cut them off," she said as if that made sense, news flash it didn't seeing as she had literally no tools to do so.

Wo Fat had had enough of this, he clearly wanted Rowan away from them all. He put a hand to her back and ushered her towards the door. "Go get Doris please."

Rowan nodded and went to the door, opening it up again, this time it didn't lead to the outside. She shut the door behind her and Steve followed.

He opened up the door expecting to see the same kind of hallway he had seen when Rowan had opened the door, or the outside where they had been but it was neither.

"I… uh… what's happening?" he asked.

Wo Fat was watching the cameras and Steve noticed right away that the camera that used to show his mom's room was black. How the hell had she fucked with the camera that quickly?

Wo Fat turned to Steve and his eyes narrowed at him in a confused way when he noticed the door in his hands. "Uh… you opened a door?"

"No, this… we went through this door to get inside the building… and now it's a hallway…"

Wo Fat looked him up and down, then to all the face of the people Steve had brought with him. "I don't know what you want me to tell you right now, but shut the door please."

Steve shut the door and no sooner did he shut the door did it open again. In fact it practically hit him as it did.

"Here you go," Rowan was saying ushering Doris in. She then turned to Wo Fat as she shut the door. "We won't be able to do that for your dad though. There's a padlock on the door."

Wo Fat nodded. "That's fine. I didn't want to rely too much on it anyway."

"Rely on what?" Steve cried. "What the hell did she just do?"

Rowan turned back to him that cool look ever so similar to the kind of look that Wo Fat usually gave him as she said: "That's really none of your business."

Steve blinked his eyes at her and Wo said: "Closest door to that one maybe?"

Rowan seemed to think about it before saying: "Yeah I can do that."

She went back to the door, put her hand on the door knob and then paused. She glanced up to Steve who had been standing beside her. He purposely wanted to see what was happening when she did that, because something was going on.

"I need you to get away from me, please."

Steve had no intention of moving, but Wo Fat grabbed him and tugged him away. As soon as he was away, she did it again.

There was a static hiss, she opened the door and ushered them all out.

It was still not the outside. It was still not the hallway he had seen, and it wasn't the hallway that had been there when he opened the door.

They were now staring at the padlocked door that lead to Yao Fat's cell.

Steve waited for everyone to get through the door, Rowan was the last one through. And as soon as she shut the door he went to it and opened it.

It did not lead to the control room.

It led to the center courtyard of the whole place. Rowan shut the door quickly and quietly.

"What are you doing? Do you want them to see us?"

"That's not the control room! How… how… what is happening right now?"

"Oh we don't have time for this!" she hissed.

"Ro, lock please," Wo called having ignored all of this to go to the door that separated him and his dad.

Rowan left Steve's side went to the look, simply put her hands to it and it clicked open. Seriously what the hell was happening.

"Right, all you," she said and for the first time Wo Fat actually looked nervous.

He carefully opened the door and peaked his head in. Rowan actually shoved him the rest of the way in. They all sort of stood by and watched as Wo Fat went to greet his father. They hugged rather awkwardly before Doris got to greet him as well.

Eventually they brought Yao out of the cell he had been in for god knows how long, and then Wo was leading him towards Rowan who looked rather nervous herself all of a sudden.

"This is my sister… Ro," he said and Yao nodded his head to her.

"It's nice to meet you," she said.

Yao might have said more if the alarms hadn't gone off. They all looked up and around and then Rowan and Wo were looking at one another.

"What is that?"

"Uh…. I think they've figured out we're here…"

"What's Con saying?"

"Uh… I'm getting worry from him," she said but again, he couldn't see how she could have gotten that message when he didn't see an ear piece or either rowan or Wo Fat.

"We need an exit strategy," he said.

"I don't think I can pop either," Rowan countered. "Steve's starting to notice."

"Yes, well… that's a problem in it of itself. I think we should just keep things normal until we get out, alright? Any chance you can at least get Con here?"

Rowan glanced back to Steve and then to him. "I mean, he's ready to be pulled but I don't think I should do that here… right now… The more anxious he gets the more pressure it's putting on me," she said and then turned back to Steve. "Could you stop?"

"I don't even know what I'm doing!" Steve cried.

The rest of his team and Doris were all suiting up, pulling out their weapons ready for the onslaught of CIA operatives who were no doubt combing the place looking for them.

"We've got incoming!" Danny cried, and then flinched as bullets were heard followed by shouts. "Yep, they've found us. Can you stop arguing?"

Wo Fat turned back to Rowan who was groaning. "I was hoping to avoid this but uh…"

"Are you sure?" she asked. "Are you sure you want to do this? Because you were the one who said I shouldn't use my powers anymore, specially around the CIA…"

Powers, she was talking about magic powers. He didn't want to believe she had them, he really didn't, but… some weird shit had been happening all through the

It looked like Wo Fat had more to say but a door to the side of them flew open, bullets were being shot at them and none of them were prepared.

Except for Rowan.

There was a hissing pop and suddenly they were surrounded by an orange translucent shield. The bullets pinged off it, the surface rippling with each hit but otherwise nothing was getting through.

In fact it looked like the shield had gone around the whole room.

Steve turned and found that Rowan was standing there, arms up, eyes closed, brow furrowed.

Is this what she meant by powers? She… she actually had powers?

Please god just let this be some kind of technology because if she actually had powers Steve might loose his mind.

There came a secondary hiss of static, and with it came the sound of ripping. Something opened behind Rowan, this jagged oval of space with an orange sparking outline and from it walked out the Rabbit wearing assassin she called her brother.

Con came out, tossed Wo Fat a gun and the two went about loading the guns like this was the most normal of situation in the world.

But it wasn't, it couldn't be.

Steve watched the two men, waiting to see if they'd acknowledge what was happening, but both of them were ignoring him and his team, who seemed to be in the same amount of shock that Steve was. In fact neither man looked the least bit phased or concerned. So either, this happened a lot, or they knew it was coming.

"Right, Ro, on the count of three, you're gonna lower the shield and Con and I will deal with the situation, okay?" Wo said absently as he went about putting on the Kevlar that Con had brought for him.

Steve glanced to his companions who, again, were just as confused as him and then back to Rowan who had not responded.

Finally he got the reaction he wanted from Wo Fat and Con. They finally looked concerned. They both looked up and turned to Rowan.

"Ro?"

She glanced back at them, her eyes orbs of pure white, mist seemingly smoking out of her skull.

That was a terrifying image, and it definitely scared Wo Fat, but probably not for the same reasons it was scaring Steve.

"No. Rowan. Don't!" Wo cried but a portal opened up under her feet and she dropped out of view.

"Shit!" both Wo and Con cried at the same time, while Steve just stood there unsure as to what happened.

"What… where did she go?"

They peered through the orange swirling semi-translucent shield around them, and watched as Rowan dropped out of the sky behind the line of very confused men who had been staring at them and the shield.

They didn't notice her right away, but they sure has hell noticed when the portal opened up beneath them and they all started dropping in.

The ones that hadn't been engulfed in that portal turned on her, shooting at her, but a smaller version of the shield popped up in front of her, blocking where necessary. She spread her hands out like she was against a wall and then just shoved with all her might sending the shield she had popped in front of her into the line of men that were shooting at her.

A man came from behind, hoping to attack her but she just turned around and decked him. She had the shield in front of her fist though so it was what hit him, and judging by the electric crackle and the yelp when it hit him, Steve would have guessed that the man got electrocuted.

"Oh goddamn it!" Wo Fat cried.

"I thought you told her not to do this!" Con cried.

"Well I did, but… well you know how she is…"

And Steve did know, just like Con did. Rowan didn't listen to anyone.

A horrified: "Oh my god," came out of him as he watched someone try to stab Rowan. She popped a portal in the way of the hand, the whole arm sunk in. She opened another so the hand came through and she closed the portal on it, severing it from the limb.

As the man screamed she blasted him back and into a different portal.

He actually came flying into their space, but the second he did both Con and Wo Fat shot him.

Steve and his team watched on, horrified. Wo Fat turned up to look at him, took in his look of shocked horror and then asked: "Uh… you okay?"

Steve blinked his eyes. How could this man be so nonchalant about everything they were witnessing right now?

"No… she uh… she has magic powers…"

Wo Fat turned back watching as Rowan kicked at nothing and a shield flew up and bashed into the four people that had been rushing at her from the left. "She told she had powers Steven. She wasn't lying…"

"I mean you guys have literally lied about everything else."

"True, but we weren't lying about that."

"Is this how… is this how… uh… you guys were… is this why…"

"Yeah that's why you were never able to find us," Wo Fat said. "She can open a portal to anywhere she's ever been."

Aw! That cheater!

Wo Fat glanced up caught Steve's glare and smiled happily at it. "She also has a tendency of just pulling me if she thinks I'm in danger so yeah, that's how I got away from you a few times too."

Lucky.

That man had fucking horseshoes up his ass.

Because if it weren't for fucking Rowan, Steve would have caught him ten times over.

Actually that kind of made Steve feel better. He wasn't incompetent, Wo Fat wasn't better than him. Rowan had fucking magic powers! That's the only reason Wo Fat had gotten away from him.

"Is that how she downed the plane?"

"Yeah her powers mess with electronics. She used them on the plane and it took out basically everything electronic. I wish I could say that's the first time something like that has happened."

Steve shook his head. Jesus. You know, knowing this beforehand would have made his life a whole lot easier.

"Why didn't she just portal you out of Halawa?"

"Because… we're trying to keep her powers on the DL and me disappearing out of a prison would not have been on the DL."

Wow. So basically he had just gotten lucky. Every single time he had managed to catch Wo Fat, it had been luck.

"Kay, why didn't she just portal him out of the prison?" Danny asked pointing to Yao.

"For the same reason she didn't portal me."

"Okay, well the CIA knows now, don't they," Danny said pointing to Rowan who was now in a small shield, similar to the one they were in, she was getting surrounded by the remaining soldiers who were all shooting at the shield as if trying to break it down with bullets.

"Yes… well… we're going to deal with them soon. Can't leave any witnesses you know?"

Great, so the plan really was to kill them all.

When both Steve and Danny scoffed Wo Fat frowned at them. "Okay, look, we try to design our plans with the least amount of void action as possible. We try to limit it's use to emergencies only."

"So her bouncing us around this compound with what I'm now guessing was portals in each doorway she went through was an emergency?"

"No, it was a convenience, and because I didn't really want her wandering around on her own."

That was absolutely ridiculous. If she had these powers they should have just popped Yao out of that cell and gone home. Why did they have to do this long way? He'd think, being the criminal that he was, Wo Fat would use this to his advantage all the time.

Seriously, why hadn't he?

"Oh… she's powering up to do something," Con said just as there was a crackling and their own shield went down.

Oh that couldn't be good.

Wo Fat walked over to Con, gun up and ready, and put his back to his. "You ready?" Con called, adjusting his mask so it sat on his face.

"Just don't shoot me or her this time," Wo shot back and a portal opened, one in front of Wo and one in front of Con that both just seamlessly walked through.

The second they did they appeared in Rowan's own protective bubble just as she lowered it as well and they opened fire.

That left them all standing there watching as these people mowed down all that was left of that CIA team. Not that they believed it.

As they got everyone into the cars they were going to drive out of there, Con had gone around the compound making sure everyone was dead.

This had, simultaneously been the easiest and most stressful rescue or op he had ever gone on. And all he could wonder was what the hell was going to happen next.
