CHAPTER 13: Choices and repercussions
The past few weeks had been rough for Beca and the bureau. The press relentlessly hounded them. The director kept giving vague statements that an investigation was underway and they can't release any more information at this time. Chloe was there for her the whole time. She continues to be supportive and tries to take care of Beca in her own little ways.
It was a Monday and another new week. Beca and Chloe were moving around each other in the kitchen preparing for their day. Chloe's car was still with Lilly so Beca had been dropping her off at the studio before heading to work.
"I'm not complaining. I like driving you to your work and picking you up. But when are you getting your car back?"
Chloe raised an eyebrow at Beca. "That sure sounds like your complaining."
"I'm not." Beca said while reaching for Chloe's hands and kissing her knuckles.
"Oh right that reminds me. I think she said I can pick it up this morning. Can you drop me off at Lil's this morning?"
"Sure."
Beca has wanted to make it up to Chloe. "Hey Chlo, are you free for dinner tonight?"
Chloe turns to Beca with a smirk. "Are you taking me out on a date? What's the occasion?"
"I don't need an occasion to take my lovely girlfriend out on a date. Do I?" Beca leans into Chloe and steals a kiss on the lips this time.
It makes Chloe giddy. "I guess not. Where should I meet you?"
"I can pick you up at yours later? 6:30 sound good?"
Beca still had her old apartment. Chloe already said yes to move in with her months ago but the two of them haven't had the time and have been too busy with work to actually do anything about it. Instead they made a schedule between their two places.
When Beca parked her car outside Lilly's pub. Chloe turned to her to kiss her good bye.
"Do you wanna come in and say hello?"
Beca visibly winced. She still hasn't met Chloe's friend, Lilly, officially. "I can't. I have a meeting this morning. But if it's okay with you, how about we invite Lilly over for dinner sometime this week?"
"I think she'll like that. Your place or mine?"
"My place. I'll cook dinner and stuff for you guys."
"Ooh a Mitchell special. I can't wait. Which nights will you be free?"
"Let her pick. I'll adjust."
Chloe smiled and leaned into Beca again. "You know I'm already in love with you, right?"
Beca chuckles at that. "Remind me again how much?"
"Oh babe, don't tempt me. I'm not the one with a meeting to go to this morning."
"I fuckin' hate my job."
Chloe watched Beca's car disappear around the corner before she walked towards Lilly's pub. When it's this early, the entrance by the alley is the only one open. Chloe had just past her truck when Brett showed up out of nowhere.
"Ms. Beale." Brett greeted her.
"I don't think you have an appointment with me today."
"I'm afraid I don't but I was hoping you would make time for me anyway?"
Chloe crossed her arms and just looked at Brett. There was no point arguing with Brett, he was just following orders.
"Please?" He asked again nicely.
Chloe took a deep breath and breathed out. "Fine. Twenty minutes big guy."
"Thank you. Follow me please."
Brett drove Chloe to a nearby office where she found Carter waiting for her.
"What do you want Carter?"
"Straight to the point. I like it. I have a job for you."
"Okay? And you couldn't just give me a call or shoot me an email or something?"
"No this needs to be discussed in person."
"What sort of project is it? Who's the client?"
"It's not a photo shoot."
"Oh. Okay. Why are you telling me? Shouldn't you be talking to Kommissar herself?"
"That's the thing. Kommissar must not know about this. I'm serious."
"Why? What's the job?"
Carter handed Chloe an envelope. Chloe didn't take it and just looked at it.
"Come on. See for yourself."
"This isn't how it works."
"No no. From now on, this is how it's going to be." He insisted.
"I don't understand."
Carter pushed the envelope to Chloe's hand again. "This will make you understand."
Chloe reluctantly took the envelope from him and almost tore it open. She didn't go through everything the moment she saw who the target was. "What am I looking at? I have no time for your sick jokes. I have better things to do."
"It's no joke and I know you're the only one capable to do the job."
"I'm leaving now. I have to get back to work. This was a waste of time."
"We know it's you, Chloe. You're a professional killer and you're really good at it. So deceiving. We've been keeping tabs on you since we found out."
Chloe thought about denying it but there was no point. She didn't want to be here longer than she needed to be so she decided to not argue.
"It's your men who's been following me then."
"So I see you have noticed."
"I'm not doing this. I'm not going to be a part of this."
"Chloe."
"I'm leaving. I think we're done here."
"At least have it verified by your people then give me a call on this number."
"It's a no Carter."
"If you refuse to do it, they will find a way to convince you."
Chloe scoffed at that. "Are you threatening me right now?"
"No look Chloe, I know how loyal you are to her but this is happening. Our bosses already called it. Kommissar's death certificate is already been signed. You just have to deliver it."
Chloe's non-response was a confirmation for Carter. "You have no idea what I'm talking about. Kommissar left you out of the loop, didn't she? Don't worry we're on the same team. You think they don't know the stunt she pulled?"
"I'm still not following."
"A war is coming. Time to choose your side. You two have remained to be under the radar for years. Unfortunately you caught their attention."
"Who are these people?"
"I'm sure they'll be delighted to set a meeting once you get rid of Kommissar."
"I think you would know by now that if you come for her, you come for me too and you already know what I'm capable of so why don't you find someone else to do the job or better yet convince your bosses to let it go?"
"If we promise to keep your girlfriend safe, will you do it then?"
This was one of the things Chloe feared the most about being found out.
"That's right. Choose. Kommissar or your girlfriend?"
"Are you blackmailing me?"
Carter raised his hands in surrender. "I won't even dare. I'm just saying, there are ways to make you change your mind."
"I can say the same to you Carter. I'm not that kind of killer but don't even think that I will hesitate to do what I have to do to protect the people around me."
Carter broke first. "Now now, let's not get too carried away. At least just think about it."
"I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you." With that, Chloe turned to leave.
"What if I tell you this could be your last job? After this you're free to go."
It was tempting. Chloe has to admit it was tempting but she didn't stop walking. "Take me back to my car please, Brett."
"I'll wait for your call!" Carter called out to her before she disappeared in the corner.
Beca was staring at her own notes that she's prepared since she was a part of this investigation. It was the reaper's criminal profile they prepared and constantly updated.
Profile: single, white female, 28-33, not over 5'8, neat in appearance, can blend into surroundings, military background, not intimidating, probably in a job that's very social with great people skills, reckless but calculated and meticulous, great attention to detail, organised,
Beca's been in her office working on her report for the meeting later. She's been thinking about the profile a lot these past few days.
As she stares at her screen and recalls her meet up with Kommissar, there's that feeling in her gut that she can't shake off.
"She doesn't fit the profile." She muttered to herself.
But saying it out loud only made it worse.
"Hey. I got the report from the surveillance and."
Beca jumped a little when she heard Jessica. She didn't even hear Jessica coming in.
"Woah. Everything okay? Talk to me."
"Sorry it's just she doesn't fit the profile." She repeats.
"Who doesn't?"
"Kommissar."
Jessica looked intently at Beca waiting for her to explain. She knew she was going to go on and ramble but it was her way of thinking and processing these things.
"She's intimidating, she's stands out and she's too tall. Remember with Salazo Sr.? The reaper literally walked up to one of our highly trained field agents and it took him a few seconds to realise who was standing in front of him."
Jessica nods as she listens to Beca.
"The moment I saw Kommissar standing in the middle of my living room, it was instant fear. The hairs at the back of my neck stood up at her mere presence. Alarm bells were ringing all over the place. I didn't even blink and I could tell it wasn't going to be good."
Beca looks away from Jessica and back at their 'reaper wall'.
"There was something so sinister about her. And the way she talked to me, her expressions, she was absolutely insane. A compete and total lunatic. How can someone like that blend in and do what she does? Even our own witness said she looked average."
"Okay. But we both know we make these profiles as a guide. They're not always accurate."
"I know. But I've been replaying our conversation over and over, I've already memorized it in my brain her every movement. Then it hit me. She holds her gun differently and it wasn't a pistol, which is supposedly her favourite gun. She even brought a different gun."
"Maybe she didn't want to risk being caught with it?"
"Yeah I guess that's reasonable. Okay or maybe I'm making something out of nothing."
"No Becs, you're making very good points."
"Sorry you were going to tell me something?" Beca wanted to give her a mind a break about the profile.
Jessica sighed as she remembers the report and handed it to Beca. "I read the report and I don't know. Your call if you want to remove it or not. I don't think we should."
"What do you mean? We can't keep it there forever. Why? Did anything come up from it?"
"Go to page 18. That's the day of the attack."
Beca flips through the pages. "I don't understand. Where's the rest of it?"
"That's the thing. That's it. Most of the day is unaccounted for. Specifically at the time of the attack."
"What do you mean? We don't know where she went or what she did?"
"It's exactly that. There's just that gap."
"Do you think it's a glitch?"
"They're working fine."
"Tampered with?"
"I don't know. I don't think so. I think she just wasn't home or at her studio."
Beca nodded. There could be a number of reasons why Chloe wasn't home or at her studio. That didn't make her a criminal or complicit.
"There's more. We've also been doing some surveillance at the warehouse you gave us the address to and we spotted these suspicious men who appeared to be watching it too."
Beca looked at the photos and studied their faces one by one. She doesn't recognise any of them.
"Have you ran through facial recognition in the system?"
"Yes and there's nothing yet."
Beca and Jessica only looked away from each other when a younger Agent knocked and opened the door. "Ma'ams the director wants you both in her office now."
"The meeting doesn't start in an hour." Beca said.
"We have an arrest warrant. For the reaper."
Beca and Jessica turned to each other then made their way to Aubrey's office where the meeting was going to be held.
Chloe was dropped off back at Lilly's place. She wasn't in the best of moods now. Carter got her a little riled up.
Lilly greets her with. "Good you're here. My office now."
"God what is it with people this morning?"
Lilly just looks at Chloe but doesn't say anything and Chloe follows her to her office at the back.
"Sar what are you doing here?"
"I don't wanna waste anyone's time so I'm gonna cut to the chase. I'm giving myself up to the FBI."
"What?"
"Chloe this is happening. I'm going to give myself up."
"Why? You're not taking the fall for this. I'm not okay with that. I won't let you do it. They have nothing on us."
"Don't you want to walk away from it all? This is your chance."
"Yes but not at your expense. We'll find another way. There's always another way. We can just let it be a cold case."
"Look. Truth is I made a deal with Agent Mitchell. I said to her that if the governor is safe at the end of the day, then I would come in and give my statement. The governor is alive and well so I lost. I'm doing this."
"Why would you even do that? What were you really doing going to Beca? I couldn't stop thinking about what happened. It doesn't make sense to me."
"It doesn't matter. I made my mistakes. That's on me. But this is happening. I've already found ways to reach their prime witness and she will say it's me."
"You did what?"
"How else was I supposed to convince her and the FBI that I'm the reaper? Do you know how hard it is to convince them?"
"Maybe cause it isn't you?" Lilly chimed in.
"No the witness will say it was me who she saw. Then once she's done her part the thing I'm considering now is whether or not I should kill her."
"You wouldn't dare." Chloe hated discussing about getting rid of witnesses.
"I don't want risking her changing her mind. Once she's done her part, that's it."
"No. I won't let you hurt her. You leave that nice girl alone. She was in the wrong place at the wrong time."
"Why do you care so much about this witness? Are you worried that it would devastate your beloved? Now I wonder which would devastate her more. A dead witness or knowing you're the reaper she's been looking for?"
"Leave her alone. End of discussion. So this is what you've been doing behind our backs?"
Kommissar knew Chloe wasn't going to like this plan. "Can't you see I'm doing this for you? Chloe you have been nothing but loyal to me. Yes we have had our arguments but when it came down to it, we had each other's backs. I'm doing this. This is your way out. Let me do this."
"I owe you my life and I will forever be grateful for that. You don't have to do this. We don't need to hit the panic button yet."
"I'm not doing this just for you. Just trust me on this."
"Make me understand."
Lilly could feel the tensions in the room rise. "Alright you two. Settle down. Let's not kill each other here."
"What's there to discuss? I'm turning myself in and that's final." Then Kommissar turns to Chloe.
"That's just absurd Sar. You know it is. No one is turning them self in."
"I'm afraid it's too late. I know for a fact that they've already interviewed the witness again. I didn't tell you because I knew this is exactly how you would react."
"Why are you doing this?"
"Who knows why I do the things I do."
"No seriously. Why are you doing this?"
"It doesn't matter. It's done. There's nothing you can do Chloe so just take it. You don't even have to thank me."
"There's something you're not telling us."
"We're going to end it here. No jobs for a while and maybe for good. Isn't this what you want?"
"No. This isn't what I want and if you think I'm going to sit back and let you do this. You're wrong."
For the second time this morning, Chloe walked out. There was nothing she could do if she stayed there going back and forth with Kommissar.
Lilly spoke up and said to Kommissar. "I don't really understand why you're doing this and I know this is a big thing you're doing for Chloe but I'm with her on this one. This isn't the way to go."
"Thank you Lilly. I appreciate you letting us use this place too."
Lilly sighed and caught up with Chloe.
Chloe kept ranting about how stupid and reckless and selfish Kommissar was being.
"You know I'm the last person to understand what goes on in Kommissar's head."
"We can't let her do this."
"I know and I agree. But what can we do? Lock her up somewhere to keep her from turning herself in?"
"If we have to, yeah."
Chloe looks out to the road where her car was parked and sees two men who looked a little out of place. She tilts her head and furrows her eyebrows. FBI? Carter?
"Look, we both know how crazy she can get. Why don't you just lie low for a while and focus on your other job? Don't you like taking breaks after a job?"
"Yeah when it's a successful one. As it turns out, not so much when it's a failure."
"It's not your fault Chlo. It's done. There's nothing any of us can do about it now. So please stop obsessing over it."
"Can you blame me Lil? And Kommissar's plan is not helping at all."
"I wish I have answers for you but what can we do?" Lilly asked again.
Lilly continued to watch her friend. "I worry about you, you know?"
"Yeah? When were you ever not?"
"I'm serious Chlo. This could be a good thing. Kommissar knows what she's doing. Isn't there a little part of you that's relieved somehow? You've been talking about walking away from all these and here's your real chance to do just that."
"Yeah but not like this. How am I supposed to live my life and walk away knowing one of the longest people I've known paid for it with her life?"
"You can't control what she does with her life. If she chooses to do it, then so be it. It's not on you. Control the controllable. Live your life to the fullest. Be happy. You deserve it."
"I just. I don't know how to actually walk away from all of this. I guess it's a little overwhelming. I really want to but I don't even know where to start or if I can. I mean how do I move forward and live life with Beca as if nothing happened? I can't erase what I did and if Beca even knew half of what I've done she wouldn't be able to love me or look at me the same way. She'll hate me. My past will follow me wherever I go. It doesn't matter who I'm with."
"Chlo, breathe. Slow down. That's understandable. This has been your life for a really long time now. Try to take it one day at a time and I'll keep you posted on Kommissar."
Chloe sighed. "You're right. Thank you Lil."
"You're welcome. You know I have some time to spare. Do you want some company?"
"I'll be fine. I'll be spending most of my day in the dark room."
"Okay. Well you know where to find me if you need me."
Chloe gave her another grateful smile and gave her a quick hug before leaving.
Beca stared at a black screen. They just watched Aubrey's interview with Emma and how she picked out Kommissar in the photos Aubrey showed her and told her she was the one she saw that night.
"What's wrong Agent Mitchell? Tell me. I know that face." Her mom was definitely interested.
"On the day of the attack, there's nothing on Chloe's movements at the time of the attack."
"Keep going."
"I've watched multiple interviews of that witness and something is definitely wrong in that video."
"Aren't you supposed to be celebrating? We finally have a witness confirming it's Kommissar and Chloe is kind of off the hook. Of course we will still need her. She's our only lead. She's the only one that could lead us to Kommissar. I'm just not sure if that's enough to get her in just for questioning." Gail said.
"Especially since the recordings are unreliable and illegal." Aubrey added.
"Unreliable?" Gail asked Aubrey.
"Chloe knows about the bugs her team installed and I'm willing to bet my job on it."
Gail only raises her eyebrows at that. She of all people, knows the sort of training the Special Forces have.
Beca then looks to Gail. "What if you discuss with the judge the situation? That they were together in the army? Maybe that link would be enough."
More than anything, it was Beca who needed this confirmation.
"I'll try to figure something out. In the meantime, one of you please try to convince her to just come in. It's just questions."
It was Aubrey who answered Gail. "No. She was clear last time. She's not coming in unless she has to."
Gail considered it for a moment and her lips curved upward. "I have an idea. Leave it to me."
Beca doesn't like the sound of that. "What are you planning?"
Gail ignored Beca. "That would be all Agents. Go back to work."
Beca couldn't help but feel there was something going on with Chloe. They just got home from their date night and settled into the couch before calling it a night.
"Hey. Everything okay? You seem to be a little out of it?"
Chloe forces herself to smile. "I'll be okay. Just some things with work. I'm sorry. I know we barely spent time these past weeks and we just got home from an incredible date and here I am thinking about work."
"No no it's fine. Did you want to talk about it?"
"Not really. Let's talk about something else."
"Okay. While we're on the topic sort of. I know I've been all over the place because of work. What do you feel about finally going on that trip? Just the two of us."
"Yeah? But can you step away from work?"
"I have a couple of leaves I could use. Ash is recovering fine and Jess got it all covered. We can finally go on that road trip we've been talking about. I feel like I owe it to you. What do you say?"
"I would love that. But you know you don't owe me anything."
"I definitely feel like I do. Can I ask you a question?"
"Of course Bec."
"Do you ever think about how it would be if I had a different job?"
Chloe wasn't expecting that question and admittedly she's been thinking about it a lot but the other way around. What would her relationship with Beca be like if she didn't do the things she did.
"What do you mean? Is everything okay? Did something happen?"
"Nothing. I just feel like." Beca thought about it and shook her head. "No something did happen. A guy wanted his wife dead cause all he wanted was for her to walk away from her career so they could live their life together."
Beca knew it was risky and she never talked about work with Chloe before.
"Sounds a little too selfish for me. Do you think that's how I feel about you?"
"No no. Don't get me wrong Chlo. It just got me thinking."
"I don't want you to do that. I'd never ask you to do that."
"I know. I just wanted to let you know that I'm handing in my resignation soon. We might close the case I've been working on and I think I'm finally gonna do it."
"What? Are you being serious?"
"Yeah. I think it's time."
Chloe snuggled to Beca. "Just promise me you'll really think about it. If that's what will make you happy, you know I'll support whatever you decide to do."
"I know and I really love you for it."
Chloe thought her start of the week was so bad that things would start to look up. All that positive thinking went down the drain the moment she saw Gail walk in her studio.
"Hello Chloe."
"What are you doing here?"
"You do know this place has been bugged, right?" Gail starts to look around as if trying to spot any listening device. "Actually you've known for a while now. I wanna see how you react and respond when you know Rebeca can hear your every word."
"Leave."
"I'm here to ask you about Kommissar. I have an arrest warrant for her and you're going to help me find her." Gail walks around and Chloe follows her with her eyes. "I know either of you could have done it. But that doesn't matter if you're working together."
"What does your investigation have anything to do with me? You and Aubrey are obsessed."
"You're good but not that good. So how long have you known this place had been bugged?"
Chloe was trying to decide how she was going to approach this situation.
"You did know, didn't you?" Gail pressed.
"I think you're giving me a little too much credit."
"You're a professional and your attention to detail is impeccable. So you're telling me you had no idea?"
"What can I say that will make you leave right now?"
"Give me Kommissar."
"You're all out of your minds."
"No I think you know exactly where she is or at least how to reach her. I don't expect to get it so easily. I know how loyal you are."
"Gail I would really appreciate it if we only talk about Beca. Other than that, we don't have anything else to talk about."
"Well in that case. What if I tell you I'll give you my blessing in exchange for information on Kommissar?"
"Really? You're using my relationship with Beca as leverage?"
"Well. I need to have some use for it."
"Please leave."
"We're gonna get her with or without your help. And the moment we find evidence that you have anything to do with Kommissar, you're going down with her."
"Then all the more that you should leave. You wouldn't be asking me for anything unless you have something to go on with. I can imagine how much it pains you asking for my help. I have nothing to say to you."
"We're closing in on you Chloe. You can't get away with this forever. Beca may not believe me now but I'm telling you when she finds out, you will be left for the wolves just like all those years ago."
Chloe was just about to open her mouth to say something again when Gail cut her off.
"Wait a minute. Of course. She saved your life, didn't she? You owe her that much because she saved your life. You feel indebted to her. You're willing to go down with her."
"You mean the part where you left me with terrorists to die? I was curious for a while what the exchange was really about. Was there even an actual threat to innocent lives or did you just say that? I was there being tortured for a really long time. I picked up on a few things."
"What sort of things?"
"I really find it intriguing Gail how you continually incriminate yourself knowing the place is bugged. Is it cause you and I both know it's illegal? If I wanted to waste my time on you, I would sue. As much as I want you to go through with me what you and Aubrey did, I have better things to do with my time. I think we should both return to our jobs. Let me do my job and I'll let you do yours."
Gail took another step towards Chloe and Chloe didn't move. She wasn't scared.
"We will break this case wide open. Time is ticking. Choose a side."
Chloe tried not to show it but it couldn't have been a coincidence that Carter just said the same thing to her.
"We're done."
"No Chloe. We're done when I say we are."
Gail left her with that and Chloe let out an audible sigh.
Beca arrived at Chloe's apartment before Chloe did. She was listening in on the conversation Chloe had with her mom. She didn't like it and she's been thinking about how she was going to discuss the whole thing with Chloe. She was in the bedroom getting changed when her eyes fell on Chloe's bedside table.
There was something that drew her to it and she pulled out the first drawer. She found a thumb drive. It didn't have anything on it, just a plain thumb drive. She took out her laptop anyway and plugged it in.
It had Jessica and Ashley's complete bio and more. Beca thought why would Chloe have this. She pulled it out and put it in her pocket. She had to admit this wasn't helping her build up Chloe's case. It actually got her a little worried. She's putting the people she loved and closest to her in potential danger.
She then spots a shiny silver case in Chloe's closet. Beca tried her hardest to resist looking into it but she couldn't stop herself. She slid the closet door open to the side and bent down to open it. She stopped before opening it wide open. How would she react if inside the case was anything other than equipment for taking pictures?
She found herself get nervous. With trembling fingers, she lifts up the case and lets out the breath she was holding when she saw a camera inside.
"Oh my god. What am I doing?"
For some reason, Beca thought of the storage cabinet in the kitchen. There were about three or four silver cases in there. She rushed to the kitchen.
She knew Chloe was on her way home so she didn't have much time. She opened the cabinet and her heart was racing as she stared at the shiny cases. She grabbed the one at the top and opened it.
Camera and lens were inside. Beca opened the second one. It was more lens, batteries and a flash.
By the time she grabbed the third one she was starting to feel ridiculous and started to feel bad for invading Chloe's space. It didn't stop her from clicking open the third. Just when she was about to lift the case, she heard the lock on their door click and she froze.
Beca watched Chloe come in. The two cases on the floor outside the cabinet and the third on the counter half open with her hands stuck on the side. That was how Chloe found her.
Chloe just looked at her with a surprised look on her face. This was the last thing she expected to find Beca doing.
"Bec? What are you doing?"
"Sorry I didn't mean to go through your stuff." Beca was about to go on a ramble when Chloe just walked to where she was with a smile.
Beca stepped away from the counter and watched Chloe. Chloe stood beside her and lifted the case for herself. It was another camera.
Chloe turned back to Beca. "If you wanted to see my cameras, you could've just asked."
Beca felt uneasy. It was almost like she was caught cheating. It could have been her being defensive but for some reason she thought this was the best time to bring up the thumb drive she had in her pocket. The one she found in Chloe's bedside table.
"Chloe I love you and I really want to trust you. I'm only going to ask you this once but why do you have this?" Beca pulls out the thumb drive and shows Chloe.
Chloe recognised it right away. It was the one that contained Jessica and Ashley's file. It was the one that she asked Lilly to gather for her. She shakes her head and laughs. She was blushing with embarrassment.
"What's so funny?" Beca didn't expect this reaction.
"You weren't supposed to find that."
"Why do you have this?"
"Oh god this is so embarrassing." This could very well may be one of the most embarrassing moments in her life. Chloe takes a step closer to Beca but Beca stepped back as soon as she did.
Chloe came clean. She told Beca how the night before she would meet the two closest people in her life, she asked Lilly to give her everything she could find out about them so that she could leave a good impression or so that when they run out of things to say Chloe could think of something they could talk about.
"Oh." Beca says. That's actually really sweet in a weird Chloe way.
Beca's heart warmed with how shy Chloe was being about all this and started to visibly relax. Chloe caught on to this.
"Hold on. What did you think was the reason I have it?"
Oh no Beca thought. She starts to panic again. "I uhm. I."
Chloe for the first time since she came in frowned. "Is it the same reason why you were going through my camera cases?"
"Chloe wait. Before you jump into any conclusions, if you could just listen and let me explain for just one second."
"You know Gail came to see me earlier. I mean I'm sure you do cause you bugged the apartment and my studio. Let me guess. It's the same reason you're going through my stuff?"
"Chloe I."
Chloe knew it wasn't fair. She didn't have any right to feel this way but she was losing control of her emotions. The thing with Carter and Kommissar then Gail this morning, it was all starting to build up and as much as she hated that Beca get the worst of it. Here they are.
"Save it Bec." Chloe grabbed her keys again and went for the door.
"Wait. Where are you going?"
"I'm gonna get some air. It's getting a bit suffocating up here don't you think?"
"Chloe."
"Bec please. I'm telling you the next words that are going to come out of your mouth will make or break this relationship."
"That's some nerve you have saying that considering."
"Considering what?"
Beca stopped herself. Chloe was right. They were both getting caught up with their emotions.
"You know what Bec if I wanted to date a detective I could have. All I asked is for you to be my girlfriend when we're together. At least when we're home or away from work, you try to stop being a detective. If you can't do that, then this isn't gonna work."
"Chlo."
"I'm gonna say this again. I think we both need some air. Let's do that then we can talk."
Beca let her go and watched her walk away. She wanted to stop her but Chloe was right.
Chloe was overwhelmed and she knew she wasn't thinking straight. She had to confront at least one of the few things that was bothering her so that she could talk to Beca with a level head.
She continued to feel guilty but the apartment that they were technically sharing should at least be neutral grounds. She was being a hypocrite and she knew it. Beca would soon know it too and it will only make her hate Chloe more when the time comes.
She got the address she's been waiting for from Lilly and she didn't waste time going there.
It was a dingy five-storey apartment building. Chloe went up the fire escape and peeked through the window. She saw Kommissar on her laptop. She tapped on the window to get her attention. Kommissar looked up and put her laptop away.
"What do you want? You know I accept calls too. You don't have to see me in person every time."
"Carter offered me a job."
Kommissar was interested now. "He came to you? When?"
"Yup and the when isn't important." Chloe said handing over the brief to Kommissar.
Kommissar doesn't hesitate and looks through the brief Carter gave Chloe while Chloe watched her reaction.
"Why are you showing me this?"
"Cause I know you'd do the same for me."
"So are you going to do it?"
"Well it depends."
Kommissar then started laughing while shaking her head. "So it's true. One of us is bound to kill the other one way or another. Do you want me to put up a fight to make it more interesting for you?"
"I don't want to kill you, Sar."
"But you will."
"I said it depends. Are you going to tell me what the hell is going on here?"
"As always Chloe, you have to be more specific."
"Who do you really work for? Who do I work for? Are we an independent organization or not? How dangerous are these people? Are they threatening you? Carter said that this was my last job. Like it was my way out. Why would he say that? And is this why you want to turn yourself in?"
Kommissar sighed. Chloe always had questions. "It's complicated."
"It's complicated? That's the best you've got?"
"Look. It doesn't matter."
"No. Tell me the truth."
"That's the truth."
"What are you not telling me?"
"If you knew, you're going to hate me so much that you might kill me right here and then. I'm not telling you anything more for your own sake."
"It really frustrates me when you're being like this. I've had a really fucked up start to my week and you should be the least of my concerns. Now tell me."
"Chloe I know you."
"Exactly. So just tell me."
"I would if I could. I need you to trust me on this."
"I don't really care what you do most of the time but I can't let this one slide. They know Sar. They've threatened Beca."
"That's why you're going to do it? Cause they've threatened Beca? You're becoming too predictable."
"Beca's not the only one I've got to lose."
"I've done terrible thing in the past."
Chloe was starting to become agitated. "Boohoo you. We both have done terrible and unforgiveable things. You have got to give me something better than that."
"You know you're going to have to do it. You can't say no to them."
"I refuse to be blackmailed into doing things. I've become more than that now. This reputation I've built will not be put down with threats. I have my own ways. Who are these people? What are you so afraid of?"
"Chloe unless you're going to kill me right now, I think you should go."
"No. Not until I get answers from you."
"You're not gonna get them. Not tonight at least."
Chloe had her fists closed. She was trying her hardest to stop herself from throwing the first punch.
"You wanna fight for it? To the death?"
"This isn't over."
Chloe's phone had been going off in her pocket and she knew it was Beca. She didn't want to torment her more than she should have.
Chloe (9:49pm): Meet me at the Central Inn Motel. Room 208.
Beca (9:49pm): Stay where you are. I'm on my way.
Chloe sat in her room waiting for Beca. She thought about what she was really mad about. She knew that she was more mad at herself and she was just taking it out on Beca. She was mad at Carter, Gail, Kommissar and Beca didn't deserve to be at the receiving end of that. But it did annoy her when Beca was being a detective when it was just the two of them.
Chloe didn't usually let her guard down but with Beca she slowly learned she could. That was until Beca became suspicious of her and bugged her apartment and studio.
Chloe didn't know how to make things better. How could she when she knows the truth?
She was in the middle of her first drink when she heard Beca knocking on her door. Beca was disheveled. She only calmed down a little when she saw Chloe in front of her.
"Thank you for asking me to meet you." Beca said. "Can I come in?"
"Yeah. Thanks for coming too." Chloe opened the door wider but instead of walking into the room, Beca grabs the door from Chloe. She was scared that Chloe would run.
Beca closed the door and Chloe returned to her spot at the edge of the bed. Beca took a deep breath and exhaled. She positioned herself in between Chloe's legs and knelt on the floor. She had both her hands on Chloe's hips.
Beca looked up to her. "Did you really not know?" She asked softly.
Chloe couldn't look away and she decided to tell the truth about the listening devices at least. "I did. But in my defense, the more you put the more obvious it is and you put so many."
Beca nodded and looked away but she kept her hold on Chloe. "I'm not mad anymore. It was a dick move and an invasion of your privacy. Even when I was going through your stuff earlier, I'm sorry for that. But I do have to ask you this one last thing and after this no more. I promise. I just need to know."
Chloe tried to push Beca away. "No Beca. I'm not doing this with you."
"This is me asking as your girlfriend."
"If you're investigating me and want to question me or get my statement, you're going to need a warrant. I don't think you're gonna get the answers that you want from me."
"That makes me think you have a lot to say."
"If that's true, then you won't have any issues in getting a warrant."
"Chlo this is just me. I'm always going to be on your side. I've been thinking about all the possibilities and all the different scenarios and I don't care. I love you but I can't help you if you don't tell me anything."
Chloe knew Beca had no idea what she was saying. There was no way she would be on her side if she knew the truth.
"I want to feel safe with you. I love you too and I really want to make this work but –"
"I do too." Beca cut her off.
"But if you can't be my girlfriend and just be my girlfriend when we're together then I don't think this is going to work."
"No. Breaking up is off the table. We are not talking about breaking up."
"Bec what do you want from me?"
"The truth."
Beca knows Chloe was sensitive on the subject of the Special Forces. So instead she asked. "Do you know Kommissar or not?"
"Why do you need to know that? What difference will it make?"
"Because I want you to be able to trust me. I need to know that you trust me."
Beca didn't break eye contact. Chloe closed her eyes. She couldn't look at Beca.
"I know Kommissar from the military. Believe it or not, she was a great comrade. She was discharged before I was forced to leave. It was years before I saw her again. I didn't even know she was alive. She's not a threat to me. That's all I can say."
Chloe was nervous. She didn't know how Beca was going to take that information.
"Thank you." Beca said. "I appreciate your honesty.
"Are you getting rid of those listening devices now?"
"A team of agents is removing them as we speak."
"Do we even have to talk about that?"
"I don't really want to but I do want to say I really am sorry. When did you know about them?"
"I don't really want to say either."
"You knew from the start didn't you?" If it weren't for Beca's smirk, Chloe would've been more nervous.
As promised, Beca didn't ask any more questions. She was slowly learning there was more to this investigation than she thought; something big that would revolve around Chloe and Kommissar's relationship. She put all that aside for now. Chloe had a point. In order to make this work, she had to stop acting like a detective.
The down side of that though unfortunately for Beca is that if it turns out Chloe has a bigger role in this, it means she should turn a blind eye.
Where does she draw the line?
Chloe was in a better mood. After the listening devices were removed it was like she could breathe again. She felt safe in her own house again and the sex with Beca was better too.
While Chloe was closing up the studio, she saw Kommissar calling her. She was not expecting to get a call from Kommissar and she braced herself for another argument.
"Changed your mind yet?"
"They found me. I need back up." She heard Kommissar on the other end panting then she heard gunshots. "I think I saw about four of them come in. Not sure whose people."
"Where are you?"
"Same place last time. I was gonna run but I think it's too late. They have it surrounded. Not sure how long I can hold them off. Lilly's on her way too."
"Okay. Me too. Stay on the line if you could."
"Thank you. I wouldn't call if I didn't need you."
"I know. Hang in there."
Chloe grabbed her bluetooth earphones and the keys to her motorcycle that was parked behind her studio. Kommissar stayed on the line. Chloe could tell she was still running.
"Keep talking to me." Chloe was already mounted on the bike.
It was rare for Beca to get off work early so she decided to surprise Chloe. She tried calling Chloe only to find her phone was busy. She kept trying but her call never got through. She got to the studio's street and was relieved when she saw the lights were still on and Chloe's car was still parked in her designated spot.
Beca was about to make a u-turn to park behind Chloe's car when she saw an unfamiliar motorcycle come out of the side alley. She only recognised Chloe because she remembered what she was wearing when she said goodbye to her that morning. The motorcycle revved past her and Chloe was going at full speed. It looked like she was rushing to somewhere.
Beca had to move fast and put her car on drive to try to chase Chloe. She didn't even know Chloe knew how to ride a motorcycle or that Chloe even owned one if that was hers. Chloe was speeding up the road and Beca was lagging behind. She was starting to worry that she would lose her.
All Chloe could hear were muffled noises, panting and more gunshots.
"Sar I need you to keep talking to me."
"They're still at it. How far away are you?"
"I'm gonna say two minutes. About to get to the bridge." Chloe said as she revved on her bike and sped through traffic.
"Fuck that maybe too late."
"I'm getting closer. I'll see you soon."
Beca tried her best to keep up with Chloe but she lost her. She kept trying her phone but it was still busy. When Beca was sure she had lost Chloe, she gets a call from Jessica.
"Where are you Becs?"
"Close to Chloe's studio." Beca lied.
"Okay good. I'm texting you an address. Meet me there. We have an emergency. There are reports of multiple gunshots in one of the apartment buildings. Our guys think its another drug war going down."
"A drug war? Between who?"
"We don't have further information yet."
"Okay, I'll see you there."
When the FBI arrived at the scene it was a bloody mess. The dead people they were able to identify were not their usual suspects in any of the cartels. There was no sign that this was a drug war. It was further confirmed that it wasn't when the only thing found at the scene was a three-page document.
It was Jessica who found it and she handed it over to Beca.
"I think you have to take a look at this. It seems like we're not the only ones after Kommissar."
Beca's mind was all over the place. It made sense but at the same time it didn't make sense. Why was there a bounty on Kommissar's head? If indeed she is the reaper and she's been found out, it's obvious that she had made quite a few enemies over the years. But there was another possibility of what if Kommissar wasn't the reaper and the real reaper was actually out to get her?
Beca arrived home late and Chloe was already there in her sleepwear.
"Hey. There you are. You should've called to let me know you were on your way home. Have you eaten? Want me to heat up something for you?"
This made Beca smile. She was tired and when she was tired she craved for Chloe.
Beca wanted to probe Chloe more on that night when she saw her on the motorcycle but she didn't want to rock the boat again. They just had a massive fight and recently made up. She didn't like fighting with Chloe.
Instead she thought about going on a random weekend getaway with Chloe. She feels like they both need the time to spend together away from all the chaos.
Beca and Chloe decided to go to Yosemite National Park. They were more than three hours in to the their trip when they decided to stop over at the Riverview Shopping Centre to eat and go for last minute shopping.
They took Chloe's car but Beca was the one driving. Beca thought she was being subtle but Chloe noticed there was something. She didn't call her out on it but Beca seemed to be distracted ever since she woke up. Chloe fell asleep halfway through their trip. Beca had a habit of crinkling her forehead when there was something that was either bothering her or when she was distracted.
Beca mentally slapped herself for over thinking again and that she should stop being paranoid. But she couldn't shake off the feeling that there are two cars that's been following them for the past twenty minutes.
She doesn't want to alert Chloe of anything so she keeps calm. She kept her eyes on the road and kept glancing at the rearview mirror.
Beca kept looking at the rearview mirror and was only finally able to relax when the cars she thought were following them didn't take their exit. She turned for the shopping centre's parking lot and easily found a spot.
Beca and Chloe stepped out of the truck and walked in hand in hand. Beca found herself laughing and shaking her head at how ridiculous she was being for the past half hour.
"You're in a good mood. What are you laughing about?"
"Nothing. I'm just really happy we went on this trip."
"You're such a nerd." Then Chloe spotted a massive outdoor shop and remembered they needed a few more things to set up their campsite for the weekend.
When her parents heard about this trip, Chloe promised them they would go back and take them camping back here. They were not in a real hurry and started looking around at things that they didn't necessarily need. Beca always enjoyed window-shopping at these things and got distracted by the cooking sets and cutlery while Chloe went her own way to look for an awning she could attach to her truck.
Not long after Chloe went her own way, Beca had that feeling again that she was being watched. She hated herself for not being able to relax and kept her focus on the very impressive camp stove set she had her eyes on.
Again she couldn't shake off the feeling and started to look around for Chloe. She couldn't find her. Instead she spots two men at the other end of the store that appeared to be blocking the entrance and exits.
"Knock it off Beca." She tells herself.
She knew she was being ridiculous. She decides to leave the cooking section and look for Chloe. Walking around didn't help as her eyes started to wander. She spots more suspicious looking men and it slowly starts to sink in that maybe she wasn't overthinking this. They might actually be in real danger here.
She spots Chloe bent down in one of the aisles looking at different sizes of poles, ropes and pegs. Beca bent down with the intention of teasing Chloe cause she had to admit she looked really adorable so focused on those things.
She was just about to tease her when Chloe had in fact caught on to what was happening.
"Beca please tell me those are your friends from the FBI." She said to her in a low voice.
Beca was surprised at how quick Chloe knew they were being followed.
"I wish I could. Are they more of your friends from the military?" Beca said grabbing on to one of the pegs and pretending to be interested in them.
"I'm afraid not. Act natural and follow me."
This was unusual territory for Beca. She was not used to seeing this side of Chloe. That was soon going to be the understatement of the year.
Chloe stood up and started to walk deeper into the aisle and turned the corner. Beca was following closely behind her.
"How do you want to do this?" Chloe asked her again in that low voice while trying to pick up random pieces to look at. "How many are there?"
"I don't know I'm not sure."
"Can you see any of them looking?"
Beca took a quick look around. "No the coast is clear."
"Good. Keep walking."
Beca kept following Chloe and they were going into the deeper part of the store that wasn't too crowded. Massive tents surrounded them and awnings on display and they both ducked slowly. They also saw one of the men trying to look around to spot them. It was confirmation they were indeed here for them.
Chloe then felt her phone vibrate in her pocket and she pulled it out to see Carter calling. Of course this was Carter's doing. Chloe answers his call.
"Chloe nice of you to pick up. I was hoping you were just too busy and forgot and that you weren't planning to decline our offer?"
"You know I wasn't going to accept that job. Let's say it's a conflict of interest."
"You're making a terrible decision. I like you Chloe and I admire your work very much so I'm going to give you a chance right now to change your mind."
"Or else what?" Chloe asked while keeping an eye out for the men. She could see Beca looking at her incredulously cause really how could Chloe start a casual conversation over the phone at this time.
"I didn't want to do this but it's not my call to make anymore. Let me help you. As soon as you give me the answer I want then I will call off the ambush."
"It's funny you call it an ambush. Do I sound surprised to you?"
This got Beca's attention. Whoever Chloe was talking to was responsible for the men following them.
"I wouldn't put it past you to not notice. At least you know how serious we are."
"We both know how this is going to end. Call it off."
"I see you've made your choice. You and your girlfriend are not going to make it out of there alive. Good bye Chloe."
Chloe can't believe she let this happen. She was going to deal with the fact that Beca heard half of that conversation later. Right now, the focus was to get her out of danger.
"Who was that?" Beca asked as soon as the call was over.
"A disgruntled client."
"Are you telling me that a disgruntled client sent those men?"
"Something like that unfortunately."
"What the hell is going on?"
"Look, I know you have a lot of questions but right now is not the best time for question and answer."
"You're right but we're talking about this later. What are we going to do?"
"Do you have your gun on you?" Chloe asked while putting her hair up in a messy bun.
"What? Yeah."
"Give it to me. We have a better shot at getting out of here if you give me the gun."
Beca hesitated. "What are you planning to do? Look this is a massive place. It's best if we stay put. I've already notified headquarters. Agents are on their way."
"They won't make it on time. We have to at least hold them off."
"Let me do it then. I'll distract them."
"Bec I don't have time to argue with you right now."
When Beca hesitated, "Don't you trust me?" Chloe added.
"What are you going to do? Shoot them off one by one?"
"If I have to. You said to me you needed to know that I trusted you. I need you to trust me now."
"I do but I don't want you to get hurt."
"I can do this. I can handle it I promise."
Chloe pushed Beca inside one of the tents and put a finger on Beca's lips. They were staring at each other wide eyed as they listened for footsteps outside walking past them.
When it was quiet again, Chloe spoke first. "Beca the gun now. We don't have time."
Beca eventually gave in. "Here but the extra magazines are back in the car." She handed Chloe her service gun.
"This should be more than enough. I'll deal with them and then I'll come back and get you, okay?"
"Chloe let's just think this through for one more minute."
"Promise me no matter what you stay here."
"Chloe." Beca continued to beg.
"Promise me."
"Okay. I promise." Beca knew it was a lie. "But promise me you'll be safe."
Chloe looked at the time. "If I'm not back in half an hour."
"No."
"If I'm not back in half an hour, you get out of here and get to the truck. I'll meet you there."
"I'm not leaving this place without you."
Chloe slowly moved towards the exit. "Everything will be okay I promise."
Then Chloe was gone. Beca grabbed her phone and checked the ETA of the backup she requested. They just kept saying they were on their way. It wasn't enough. Beca felt helpless.
It wasn't even five minutes and there was no way Beca was going to stay put. She had to help Chloe. She wasn't going to let her fight this alone. Beca crawled out and walked slowly in between aisles. She then spots a man knocked out on the ground not too far away from the tents section.
She ducked again and started to follow the sound of people coming to blows. She could hear struggling and scuffling and that's when she saw Chloe fighting off two men with a pole.
One of them had a knife and was lunging at Chloe and Beca was about to run towards Chloe to help her when she saw Chloe easily side stepped and countered with a pole to his stomach then face and a final kick to his body knocking him out. Beca was stunned. She was frozen in place watching as Chloe actually beat the shit out of the guys one by one.
Chloe cracked her neck as another man went down. She was supposed to be on vacation. Someone then grappled her from behind trying to do a chokehold on her. She drops the pole and elbows him to the stomach, which made him let go of her and fall back. She dodged another punch coming straight at her and she managed to do a series of combos of kicks and punches and he ends up falling in one of the cutlery displays.
This caused a lot of commotion and people started running out of the store. Chloe then runs to dive and side sweep another attacker and end it with a blow to his neck with her leg. She pushed herself up and barely escapes the knife going straight for her stomach. She reached for the chains and quickly wrapped them around her hand that acted like brass knuckles as she kept her onslaught against her attackers.
It was starting to get bloody. Chloe was relentless. She was a professional killer after all and they were not only going after her this time but Beca too. Beca was frozen in her spot. She couldn't believe what she was seeing. It was like watching a different person. Her sweet Chloe could not hurt a fly.
The Chloe she was looking at now was someone else and it was giving her full body chills. For the first time, she was starting to see what her mom and Aubrey were telling her from the start.
Then she heard the first gunshot fired. It didn't come from where Chloe was standing. Instead it was from behind her. She felt someone grab her from behind and pulled her up with a gun pointed to her head.
Chloe heard the gun go off too and saw that the last guy was holding Beca hostage. She got rid of everyone else. Chloe took Beca's gun out and pointed it directly at the man.
"Let her go." Chloe said to him.
"Put the gun down or she dies." The man demanded.
"I said let her go."
Chloe and Beca made eye contact and Chloe tried her hardest to convey to Beca that she wouldn't let anything bad happen to her. Beca didn't take her eyes off of Chloe.
"It's over. Put the gun down." The man said again.
"I'll let you live if you let her go." Chloe wasn't showing any signs of uncertainty and didn't hesitate.
Beca was trying her best to read Chloe and try to see what she was planning but she couldn't. There was just sheer determination in her eyes.
The man started to laugh. It sounded ridiculous to him how Chloe was that confident when he had the upper hand. He then made the mistake of pointing his gun at Chloe and that's when Chloe took her shot knowing that Beca was no longer at risk.
Beca just heard a loud bang and felt blood splat on the side of her face. She was in a complete state of shock. Everything happened so fast. She turned back to the man who was now dead on the floor and saw a clean shot to his head; a sight Beca found eerily too familiar. She was only brought back to reality when Chloe reached for her hand and started to pull her away from the scene.
"Run." That was all Chloe said and she held on Chloe's hand tight and ran.
"Keys." Beca was visibly shaking and handed the keys to Chloe.
Chloe unlocked the doors and even helped her get in the truck. Then she runs to the driver's side of the car and starts to drive away. When Chloe felt they were far enough, she stops the car to check on Beca.
"Are you hurt anywhere? Are you okay? I told you to stay put. Why didn't you listen to me?"
Beca has recovered a little and was overwhelmed by everything she just witnessed. She pushed Chloe's hand away. "How the fuck Chloe? What the fuck happened back there?"
"What?"
"Who are you?" Beca's voice was rising.
"It's me. It's over now. We're safe. You're okay."
Chloe tried to reach for Beca again and Beca saw her wince. That's when Beca looked down and saw blood on Chloe's right side. All the anger and confusion she felt turned into worry.
"Chloe? Oh my god. Chloe. Don't move. You got shot. That fuckin' guy shot you."
"Don't worry about me. I'm okay. It's just a tiny cut."
"Are you fuckin' crazy? You're hurt." Beca started to put pressure on the wound and Chloe was trying her best not to show the pain on her face.
"You were really brave out there Bec. I'm sorry if I scared you."
Beca kept her focus on the wound. "Keep your hand there for me, okay?" Beca instructed Chloe and reclined her seat back a little. "Don't say sorry. It's okay. You didn't scare me."
Chloe was still able to smirk albeit struggling. "Liar."
Beca knew Chloe was in pain. She held Chloe like she was the most fragile thing in the world. "This is all my fault."
"It's not." Chloe chokes up and started coughing out blood. It was painful. So painful that everything started to feel numb. Despite that she was still able to smile up at Beca after wiping the blood from her mouth. "I really am glad to see you're okay."
Beca was on the verge of breaking just seeing Chloe like this. She kept it together. She had to. "I need you to be okay for me too. Do you hear me? You're going to be okay. Help is on the way."
Chloe nods and closed her eyes. Beca panicked when Chloe closed her eyes.
"Chloe, I need you to stay awake for me, okay? Baby please keep your eyes open. Focus on me. Keep them on me."
They could both hear the faint sound of the ambulance. Chloe reached for Beca's hand. "Luke. Call him. Call Luke." Chloe says with all her strength before she loses consciousness.
"Chloe? Chloe!"
Chloe still hasn't woken up from surgery and Beca sat on a chair beside Chloe with her head resting on the bed next to her and Chloe's intertwined hands.
She could hear Luke pacing around the room and talking to someone in a very low voice. She kept her eyes closed and her breathing even.
"No she's still sleeping but she's fine. I promise you she's fine. You know Chloe, she's one hell of a fighter. She just needs to stay here for a couple of days."
Beca didn't mean to listen in but she kept on pretending to be asleep.
"She's here too. Yes. I'll keep you posted."
Luke ended the call and walked out of the room. Beca slowly opened her eyes when she heard Luke come back in again.
"Hey I'm sorry for waking you."
Beca shrugged it off. "Thanks for all your help today. I can take it from here so you can get your rest."
"Okay. I'll do that. Call me for anything anytime. Otherwise I'll be back in the morning."
Beca nods and smiled at him.
"Oh and this is for Chloe. It's like a care package. I guess some of her clients already heard the news and just wants to wish her a speedy recovery."
Beca looks at the very familiar care package. She's seen it before. "Thanks. I'll make sure she sees it the first thing she wakes up."
Luke gave Chloe's hand a squeeze and didn't look away from her face. "Call me when she does."
"I will. Oh and Luke?"
"Yeah?"
Beca stares at the package he left on the counter. She's feeling some sort of déjà vu just by looking at it. Then she froze as it hits her. The memory stunned her.
Beca's eyes widened. Could it be? She thought as she stares at the package and then at Chloe then back at the package again. Then she remembers the distinct voice over the phone. She's slowly realising that Kommissar's surprise visit to her apartment wasn't the first time she's spoken to Kommissar.
She then turns to Chloe not sure of what to feel. Then she remembers Luke was still here waiting for her.
"Beca? You okay?"
"Yeah sorry. What I was trying to say is I have to be somewhere for work tomorrow. Could you look after Chloe for me while I'm away?"
"Of course. I'd be happy to."
"Thanks Luke. I'll see you then."
"Good night Beca."
Once she was left alone with Chloe. She looks at Chloe in a different light. The images from earlier flashing before her eyes, the way Chloe fought, held the gun, the way she had no emotion in her eyes until she saw Beca was in danger.
"It's you isn't it?" Beca whispered with her eyes on Chloe.
But then she remembers the same Chloe in the car with her afterwards. Her Chloe. She was more worried about Beca than herself. She didn't even realise she was shot and was just happy to see Beca okay.
It was like two completely different Chloe's in one body. The question Beca had was which was the real Chloe. Would she be able to accept dark Chloe as her Chloe as well?
By morning, Chloe still hasn't woken up and Luke assures her that was normal. It was the body's way of healing. As much as she hated to leave Chloe's side, Beca had to leave and Luke was happy to look after Chloe while she was away.
Beca found herself on the first flight out to Boston. She had a lot of questions that she needed answers to now. She goes straight to the address provided to her by one of their agents in training. She knocks on the door and waits. Thankfully she didn't have to wait long.
"Agent Mitchell." Emma greeted her. "Is everything okay?"
"You lied. Why?"
"I don't think I understand."
"She doesn't fit the profile. She's too tall. She's intimidating. It doesn't feel right to me and I think you and I both know why."
Emma was scared and Beca could see she was starting to panic. She felt bad about harassing her like this but she was tired of being lied to and not knowing.
"Just between you and me. I need to know the truth."
Emma gathered all her courage to look up at Beca. "The truth about what? I've already given my statement."
"Was it Chloe that you saw that night?" Beca asked her straight.
Emma didn't have to say anything. Her face said it all.
"Wow. Okay." Beca said nodding. It was one thing to speculate but it was a whole nother thing to know for sure.
"You can't tell anyone! No one must know or else she'll kill me." Emma pleaded.
"Did Chloe come see you? Did she say that to you?"
"What? No. The tall scary blonde one did."
"Kommissar?"
"Yeah. She herself came to me. She said if I told anyone she would kill me and my family. She said she's doing it for Chloe and that I owed Chloe my life so it was the least I could do for her."
Beca couldn't say anything. She was at a loss for words. Deep down she probably knew the truth and she tried her hardest to prove that she was wrong. But this information doesn't make much sense to her right now. She needed time to process everything she just learned.
"Please Beca. Please. This has to stay between us."
Beca's phone started to ring and she looked down to see it was Luke.
"I promise you I won't do anything that will put your life in danger. I have to go. This conversation never happened, all right? I was never here."
Emma nodded frantically. "Yes Ma'am."
"Thank you for your honesty."
Beca was about to walk away when Emma said. "That weekend when I stayed with you and Chloe was there. I could tell she really loves you. It's fucked up but she does and I know you love her too. It's real what you two have."
"Take care of yourself, Emma."
"You too, Agent Mitchell."
Beca lets her phone ring a few more times and answered as she was getting back in the cab.
"Luke. Any news?"
"Hey Beca. Chloe's awake and she's asking for you."
"Could you let her know I'll come see her as soon as I get back from work? I should be back tonight."
