CHAPTER 8: Rescue Mission Part 2
The clock was ticking and the shadow people were almost done setting in the dinette. Many were rushing around, whether sweeping the floor, picking up the broken cups and dishes, preparing the table cloth, or bringing in the appetizer, all presently had their hands full as to not disappoint the hag, lest they wish to get "punished" that is.
As the clock continued on the more the shadows hurried, two of them had even started arguing amongst themselves for reasons even they forgotten.
Soon footsteps were heard as the entire room quieted and all then stopped and faced towards the door, falling into position in order to greet their mistress.
When the hag came in, the shadow people bowed their heads in submission.
Granny Spooks smiled widely as she inspected the area, nodding her head in approval.
Well done my dearies., she complemented., It looks like you all out did yourselves.
Now. Bring in my dinner.
Within the small chamber the three prisoners were sitting quietly, waiting for the return of the mouse. Nathanael however appeared quite worried, feeling partially responsible if anything were to happen to Juleka.
The metallic door then began making noises, causing the three to turn towards it.
Is that supposed to be her?, Molko asked.
From underneath the door a mass of darkness emerged forming into about five of the shadow people.
They gazed at various parts of the room before quickly shifting their attentions on the naiad.
The naiad in question stiffened, eyes widening as she attempted to move back, only to have her back be met with the bricked wall behind her.
The shadow people stared menacingly at her, they approached closer and closer until finally they encircled her, swirling around like a black tornado.
The two watched helplessly until the tornado disappeared, along with Melanina.
Suddenly jingling sounds were heard as they quickly faced the metallic door again. They saw as a hoop shaped keychain came from beneath it before a black colored mouse appeared.
She smiled at first before it shifted into that of surprise as she noticed that the chamber had grown darker since the last she came in.
A confused expression was printed on her face.
Wait. Weren't their three of you?
After looking through the keychain, searching for the one with the perfect fit, Nathanael placed the specific key into the keyhole before finally unlocking the chains from his arm.
He rubbed his wrist once it was free before beginning to do the same with his other.
So, what are we going to do now?
Once the shackles had fallen from his right arm, Nathanael handed the keys towards Molko.
I-don't- know., the leprechaun answered unsurely., I've never really been to a situation like this before, and… I never really-
He abruptly stopped in midsentence before a large smile crept on his face. The leprechaun then started laughing extremely gleefully as he shouted words like "free" and "I'm free", which caused confusion for the two who were watching him. Molko immediately blushed and cleared his throat after he saw their stares.
Sorry, leprechaun instincts.
He cleared his throat for another time before remembering where he left off.
But I do know this. We can't just leave the naiad behind at the mercy of that crazy hag.
Nathanael gulped.
Are you suggesting that we go and save her?, his voice wavered due to the fear of the thought.
Aye., the leprechaun simply answered, nodding his head strongly as he did so.
But-but that would mean facing off against Granny Spooks? And not to mention her army of shadow demons.
Shadow people, Molko corrected., And what? You got a better idea?
No he didn't, and it was because of that that he was left without an answer. He continued gazing at him before the toddler sized creature started to stand up.
He stretched his back, relishing his freedom before facing Nathanael once again with a serious face.
Look lad., he sighed., I don't really know you all that much, so I don't really think its right to be telling you this. But since the moment I met you, all you ever done was wallow up in your pity corner over there. I get it, this all seems new to you., he gestured his hands in the air while shaking them vaguely., And I get that I may never really truly understand that part either since I was always raised to know about my true nature. But from that time, I can already tell, that you're-not-really-good- when under pressure.
Nathanael flinched when he made that comment.
I mean, just look at your mouse friend?, Molko gestured his arms towards Juleka., From what I gathered based on your story earlier, she, like you, had no prior knowledge about the magical realm's existence either. And yet she was still able to get the keys in order to save us. While as you in the other hand, he shifted back towards Nathanael., had only shown your wants to get out of here at least once, and even then you instantly had given up just as instantly afterwards. In short, I guess what I'm trying to say is that-
You're a coward.
Nathanael's body tensed up while his breathing hicked.
And… cowardice is a characteristic looked down upon us people of the mounds, and there is no trait that I was taught to know that is more deplorable and disgusting than being a big chicken.
Molko collected his breath before ridding himself of some of his unwanted stress.
So if by any chance that you're conscience weighs stronger than you're wimpiness, than you are more than welcome to come with me. But if you really are that much of a coward, then I would suggest for you to leave this instant. As for me-
He raised his left arm, curled some of his fingers with the exception of his thumb and ring that stood as they connected to one another.
I have a naiad to save.
He snapped his fingers before turning his head towards his hand as if something had went wrong, he snapped it again and again until finally he stopped.
That… would have made for a dramatic exit., he muttered with annoyance.
He then grabbed the keys that were lying on the floor as he started grumbling while searching the one he needed before heading his way towards the door.
Nathanael slowly followed his gaze at him till the green clothed creature turned the key, unlocked the metallic door, and exited carefully as to make sure that none of the shadows were outside watching.
The artistic teenager sighed as he attempted to look down on the floor, only to be met by copper eyes staring back at him.
What?, he spat dryly.
The girl twitched at the boy's cold tone before she answered,
N-nothing.
Nathanael covered his face with his right hand. Still unsure on what to do next, he decided to ask,
What do you think I should do?
I don't really think I have an answer for that.
Uncertain and confused, the boy sighed as he met his blue orbs with her tiny copper ones again.
Okay then, what about you? What are you going to do from here?
Juleka froze from his question, now realizing that she too did not know on where to go on next. She wanted to return home, but she still couldn't face her family, she didn't want them to see her like this, she dreaded on what they might think once they saw her.
I-don't think that I have an answer for that either.
Nathanael lowered his shoulders as he looked away in deep thought. His eyes took notice at the corner where Melanina once occupied. Though he did not much know about the naiad, nor sure about her claim of him being "magic", was it still truly right to simply leave her?
Of course not., his inner voice scolded him.
But how was he supposed to save her? With an entire army of shadow people at Granny Spook's side, there was certainly no doubt that such an effort would only prove worthless, the only likely outcome of such a scenario would surely be their own downfall.
Fall.
-Whenever they fall. they rise.
A voice told him in his mind, reminding him of a distant memory.
He did not know what to do next, he wasn't sure on what to do next, but the lingering idea of having someone he just met meet there own demise was something that he did not want the rest of his life knowing.
With a gulp and one last deep breath, the boy turned back towards Juleka.
Molko was right., he told her., I'm… I'm going to help in saving Melanina.
Juleka instantly raised her drooping ears.
But what about Granny Spooks? And the shadow mons- I mean people.
Nathanael simply looked ahead towards the door.
I'll… take my chances on that one., he sighed., Besides, it's not like that I have anything better to do…or a place to go to.
His tone sounded bitter, and immediately Juleka was reminded of her thoughts earlier.
You should go back home then.
Nathanael's body stiffened when he heard that causing Juleka to look surprise.
His face read an all too recognizable expression that the girl knew quite well by now.
He can't., she thought., Can't he.
You know it's the right thing., Nathanael told.
It was the right thing., Juleka thought., But not the most safest.
Nathanael stood up and begun walking towards the exit.
I'm coming too.
The redheaded boy's eyes widened.
What?
I-I said that I'm coming too.
You know you don't have t-
You don't have to either., she retorted., But you're right, it is the right thing.
And besides, you're not the only one who doesn't know where to go from here.
Though stunned, a small smile still managed to curl onto Nathanael's lips.
It really has been a confusing day hasn't it?
The girl rolled her eyes.
Tell me about it.
Nathanael dropped down and placed an open palm for her. She scurried and climbed to his shoulders.
After that they then looked ahead of themselves, towards the direction that leads towards their destination. To say that they didn't care about what will happen to them would be a lie, of course they cared, and of course they're scared, but even then they went on straight. Taking in a large inhale, and collecting whatever courage they had, they mentally prepared themselves, for they knew, that the possibility of them on this one, might not be at their favor.
The leprechaun walked ahead, not entirely sure on where he was going. He managed to have stealthily avoided detection such far, but mostly because he was fortunate that none of the shadow people were currently patrolling the halls. As he tiptoed himself, he suddenly halted, hearing someone or something heading his way. With a deep breath the leprechaun quickly turned around, his left hand's fingers in a position that seemed ready to snap them.
Whoever you are, don't make me snap my-
He stopped in midsentence after seeing who it was.
Oh. It's you. Why'd you come here for?
Nathanael didn't want to say anything to him, still feeling uneasy about his declaration of him earlier. He wasn't angry (he knew it was the truth after all), he was just upset, for he didn't like to be reminded of that.
I'm here to come with you., he said rather quickly, clearly in nervousness.
Really now?, Molko replied.
Nathanael gulped, but instead of answering, the boy simply pointed to the direction straight at him.
Juleka said that you're heading the wrong way.
And how is she sure?, taunted the leprechaun., I mean it's a really big hall with many ways to go-
But before he could continue, the mouse squeaked and the redhead translated.
She said that her mom's a sailor and practically knows all the methods when it comes navigating. She said that she's taught her in how to trace her past footsteps from memory ever since she was like-
The mouse squeaked again, and Nathanael reacted by giving her a surprise look while uttering, What?
Juleka squeaked before Nathanael replied, Three?
He turned back to Molko.
Three. She said she's known how to trace her footsteps since she was three.
Molko blinked before shaking his head. He sighed.
Alright then., he said defeated., Take us to the hag.
And with that, the three of them continued on their way.
Struggling. That was what Melanina has been doing ever since the shadow folks had taken her here.
Inside of what was obviously a dining room, she sat on a rectangular shaped table while struggling herself in order to break the chains that were restraining her arms and legs. She tried her hardest to pull off the shackles but with no such success.
Stop struggling now dearie.
She immediately turned her head to the source of that voice. She looked and saw Granny Spooks sitting by another smaller table while feeding on some chicken soup.
Don't worry., the hag assured., I'm almost done anyway. It will all be over soon enough.
She instantly felt shaken by her choice of words and a chill went down her spine. With the chains keeping her from using her magic and with the presence of the hag and her lackeys watching, it was very much safe to assume that her fate was now sealed.
Blah!, Granny Spooks cried out in disgust, she turned her head towards a shadow person that was standing right next to her.
Bring me a better appetizer next time okay?!, she scolded.
In response the terrified shadow person quickly began nodding his head in a certain speed.
She then went back to her bowl, finishing up the at least tolerable soup before she could happily enjoy her main course.
Unbeknownst to all of the occupants of the dinning room however was that three sets of heads were peeking through the doorway.
Where here., Molko said.
All of them saw the hag and the imprisoned naiad, but what intimidated them most were the number of shadow people that were in there.
Juleka even spotted the hat figured shadow person that had helped her from earlier, standing obediently while its head was depressingly bobbing down.
As they spied on the area, Molko made a scowling look before hiding his head again. He looked at his fingers as he started snapping them once more. As like before his face was that of disappointment while he muttered,
Grrr! This would be so much more easier if my magic was working right now., he exhaled., But it seems like those chains weakened them so much that their still practically useless.
Nathanael in the other hand placed a finger under his chin as he made a thoughtful expression. He felt as if this was déjà vu, as if he had seen this kind of situation before. As he made his short trip to memory lane, a click went to his mind as an idea took form.
I got it., he said whispering while as he snapped his fingers.
You got what?, questioned Molko.
Instead of answering the leprechaun's question, the redhead simply looked at him and asked,
You still have the keys right?
Yeah…, Molko replied skeptically.
Nathanael stretched his hand out towards him, indicating for the green clothed individual to offer the keys to him.
Still with a questioning look, the leprechaun reached to one of his coat's inside pockets and took out the particular item.
Although unsure with what he had in mind he gave out the keys to him.
Nathanael gave him a reassuring look as he told,
Don't worry. I read this before in a comic.
A what?
As the boy held the keys in hand, his expression changed to that of nervousness. He then shifted his gaze towards his classmate.
He sighed.
Juleka… I know this is a bit too much for me to ask… and you've already done enough. But…
He shifted his pupils towards the dinning room and Juleka immediately knew what he meant.
You want me… to go there?
Nathanael anxiously nodded.
Only… if you're willing to?
It was a tough decision no doubt, and to say that it was basically a suicide mission would be correct. He didn't want her to go in, and clearly she didn't either. The risks were high especially, and MOST ESPECIALLY, on her part. But in order for the plan to succeed, she will need to do it.
She faced doing things that she didn't want before, whether it was School Picture day, or having to shout loudly in order to trick a police officer. But this one was the first time that someone would request something from her that would definitely put her life on a tied rope. (minus being chased by a 50 ft. baby).
Nathanael understood her hesitation, and if she really wasn't willing, then he would respect that.
Give me the keys., she said in a low voice.
Once again the artistic teen was surprised by her. He knew that she didn't want to, it was printed on her face, but even through that, she was willing to get the task done.
She grabbed hold of the keys with a fearful expression.
Meanwhile the leprechaun looked at the scene with disgust.
So that's you're plan?, he spat bitterly., Sit here comfortably while as she does all the work.
Not necessarily., he replied, turning towards him again., Once Juleka gets to Melanina, both of them are gonna need a distraction so that no one would see them escape. Our task is to make sure to avert all the unwanted attention from Juleka, while also not having that attention become directed towards us as well.
Molko thought about it, analyzing the boy's plan carefully.
That's… actually not a bad idea., he admitted., But how are we going to do that?
Nathanael looked down.
Sadly… that's all I got for now. We don't really have all the necessary equipments like in the comic I read. So we better need to think of an alternate before we send Juleka.
And we better think of something fast., the aforementioned girl interrupted.
They took a glance towards the dinning room like as Juleka did, and watched as it appeared that the hag was about to be done with her appetizer at any minute.
With no other option, Juleka huffed before turning to Nathanael.
Think of something fast.
Although her tone seemed courageous, her actual feeling was that of utter fear. But if she stayed back now then Melanina's chances to live for another day would be at stake.
Without another word, the girl dashed forward, sneakily entering the room while using her size to her advantage. (a trick she's been growing to become quite good at).
As she did, the two boys had only watched in panic, their faces instantly becoming mortified by the girl's course of action.
Nathanael was stunned, his mouth gaping as he peeked his head onto the door while he stared at his fellow classmate coming into enemy territory with nothing to protect her. He was immediately snapped out of his shock state however when the leprechaun whisper-shouted at him.
Well don't just sit there like a statue. We need to do something!
Meanwhile as Melanina proceeding in waiting for her own demise, the young naiad wandered her eyes and managed to have caught a glimpse of a familiar looking mouse sneaking her way under one of the chairs.
The mouse in question shot a glance at the wet haired girl in order to check on how close she may now be to her target destination and was immediately surprised when she saw the girl staring back at her.
With instant worry, Juleka quickly made some gestures indicating for the naiad to stay quiet. Fortunately she seemed to have gotten the message as she nodded her head then wandering her gaze to somewhere else so to avert any suspicion from Granny Spooks or her lackeys.
While as they were doing that, Nathanael and the leprechaun were still hiding by the door, discussing on what they should do.
So, asked the leprechaun., What did they exactly do in this comic of yours?
Nathanael took a second to form the words he should use.
Well. If I do remember correctly, the main heroes there used some kind of sophisticated audio device in order to mimic the sound of an actual bomb exploding.
So when the bad guys thought that their base was under attack, he continued, They all immediately went on full panic mode, leaving their own hostage behind, giving for the perfect opportunity for her to unlock herself after being given the keys by Z-netu. His a tiny robot from Neptune.
Molko raised his brow.
So why didn't they just used this audio thing as the center of their plan instead of having to send their "tiny robot from Neptune" first?
Nathanael thought about what he said, coming up for a conclusion.
Actually… I'm not sure myself., he replied., I think it's for surety I guess? After all you never know if the plan would go wrong. It's best to strategize a secure plan before going onto action.
Molko nodded, finally understanding his point.
He then furrowed his brow before an idea emerged.
Ok, here's what we're going to do., he started., I'm going to go somewhere slightly a bit far from here. And then after that I'm going to… I don't know, make some noises, noises that are unpredictable enough for even the hag to investigate. You go stay here and make sure that your mouse classmate goes by undetected.
How am I going to do that?, Nathanael asked.
Think of something., the other answered plainly. It was clear that he was still disgusted by Nathanael's "wimpiness".
Ok, but what if you get caught. Granny Spooks is one thing, but those shadows have proven to be pretty fast. They could easily catch you and put you back in the cell again.
For a moment Nathanael thought that he had saw the green colored creature flinch, but it was quickly hidden away when the later made a confident expression, then raising his left hand with his fingers forming in order to get ready to snap them.
He took in a deep breath before replying.
Don't worry about that lad. Unlike you I am brave enough to do this kind of stuff.
The boy's skin paled at the leprechaun's statement.
He hated being reminded that he was weak.
Without a word Nathanael nodded his head as the leprechaun smiled and left.
He then directed his eyes back inside the dining room to check on Juleka's progress.
The leprechaun continued in running on ahead, he went farther and farther until he thought that he was far enough.
He looked towards both his left and his right to make sure that everything was clear. When he made certain that indeed he was alone with no one following or watching him, he immediately formed his hand and was preparing to snap his fingers once again.
As with earlier and before, not a progress was made when he did that. His magic, still inactive as an effect on being chained by those enchanted shackles for so long.
He was annoyed, he needed to do something right then and there in order for the plan to work, but until he gets his magical abilities back, all he could do was snap his fingers.
Molko hissed in irritation, time was of the essence and yet here he was standing in the middle of a weak structured hallway like a worthless loiterer.
His entire focus was on his fingers, snapping them again and again in an attempt to reactivate his own magic. He was so engrossed on that he instantly became startled when he heard of something about.
Molko quickly turned around in shock only to find that nothing was there. He glance his eyes around until his peripheral visions landed on the floor.
He was met by a tiny white rabbit, and instantly became puzzled as to how it exactly got there considering how unlikely it was for the hag to keep one as a pet, let alone allow it to roam freely within her home.
Then again his uncle always did told him that a rabbit's foot makes up for a good talisman for enhancing ones own natural capabilities. So perhaps that could probably be the answer to that.
The question of why she still allowed it to have its feet remaining intact was another question altogether.
Molko immediately dropped off all his ponderings as he recalled that he still had a mission to accomplish.
With a wave of his hand Molko gestured for the rabbit to leave, but instead of doing that however the rabbit had simply hopped closer to him.
Molko sighed once again in annoyance, slapping himself in the face out of frustration.
With extra caution Juleka scampered her way under on of the cabinets. She took in a few seconds to pant before returning to what she was doing again.
Straight ahead was the table to where Melanina sat. Just one more run and she will finally reach the keys tied around her tail to the pale skinned girl.
Juleka wandered her eyes around vigilantly as she prepared herself. Her four feet were at a position as her ears perked up while she waited for her cue.
She knew she had to hurry, for in any minute Granny Spooks would be done in devouring her soup. But she knew that she had to be extremely careful as well, less she wants to be in the old crone's menu too.
With one deep breath Juleka saw her opportunity and took her chance. She ran straight towards the table all while making sure that the keys wouldn't make a single sound.
Once she reached the table Juleka took another second to catch her breath before climbing on one of the table's leg. When she got to its wooden surface she was immediately greeted by Melanina.
This however caused a shadow person to glance at them, forcing Juleka to hide behind the naiad while as the naiad stiffened before trying her best to act dumb.
When the shadow person looked away, both girls sighed in relief as Juleka handed the keys to her.
She started unlocking the chains off herself all while ensuring that she wasn't spotted for what she was doing.
Melanina made it as quickly and as hurriedly as she could possibly would, until she managed to have successfully freed all her four limbs form the metal chains.
However unfortunately by the time she did that, the hag was already done.
Granny Spooks wiped her mouth using her right sleeve to rid of the last stain of chicken soup dripping from her mouth.
She smiled delightedly with a sigh of happiness. She stood up from her chair then made a rather sinister look that gave Melanina chills.
Granny Spooks then headed towards the young naiad who was about to make a run for it but was prevented when two shadow people appeared on both her sides as to subdue her from moving.
She took a small glance at the mouse hiding behind her left with fearful eyes, as if to question "what now?"
Juleka saw her fear and immediately felt pity, but her part was over and all she could do right now was trust that Nathanael and the little one had already conjured up an idea.
She just wished for them to start with it already.
When the hag finally reached her she lifted one of her elongated pale arms with a playful expression. Her mischievous outcome was quickly replaced with that akin to a predator that had finally caught its prey. She then started strangling her by the neck with her wrinkly left hand.
The air inside Melanina began to deplete from her body as her very lifeforce was sucked away and consumed by the sadistic hag through her mouth in the form of white colored air.
Once again she felt the familiar fatigue seeping all through her very being as time itself seemed to slowed down before her.
Her shoulders dropped in exhaustion, her glow fading away, her pale skin again turning grey, her eyes drooping as she fought for them to stay open.
From his hiding spot Nathanael was already at a lost, having completely no idea on what he should do.
Molko was supposed to have already made the distraction by now, but it seems apparent that something was holding him back, or if he had already been caught, or-
As he was preoccupied with the millions of possibilities of why the leprechaun wasn't creating the noise that he promised, he hadn't notice that a shadow person had emerge from behind him.
Once Nathanael felt its eerie and haunting presence, he flinched and stiffened as he slowly turned his head, only to be met by the gaze of a shadow person's blood red eyes staring back at him.
It grabbed the boy by the back collar of his jacket before it threw him into the dining room, causing a wave of confusion and shock to all who were in it.
At least she stopped., Nathanael thought when he saw the puzzled look on Granny Spooks' face as she halted from her feeding.
Again her expression was replaced quickly into that of a smirk as she turned towards him.
Why hello there deary., she said to him, making the hairs behind the teenager's neck stand., What a pleasure seeing you here.
Nathanael made into a sitting position as he began crawling away, but the shadow people prevented him from doing that by blocking him like a wall.
His terrified blue orbs were met by the hag's while his pupils shook.
Now I'm not exactly sure how you got free, the hag continued speaking., but I'll be sure to "look up" on it., she directed that part to one of the minions (the same one that she ordered to hide the keys, causing it to shiver.)
But… since you are here now… you might as well stay here for dinner.
She said the "dinner" part with particular emphasis to frighten the young redhead.
It appeared to have worked as Nathanael was about to stand up before his neck was caught by the hag.
The hag looked at him amusingly, as if the terrified look on his face was one of the funniest things she could ever see.
She took a sniff at the boy in order to enhance her appetite but instead it resulted in her making a baffled look.
She sniffed the boy once again only to have received the same result.
She then began smelling the air as if the familiar scent she got from earlier had somehow miraculously returned. She let go of the boy's neck from her grasp as she now walked around trying her hardest to find the source of the scent.
If I'm correct., she mentally said, praying for it to become possible.
She wandered her gaze throughout every part of the room until her attention landed towards the weakened naiad.
She then quickly pointed her index at her direction.
There., the hag called.
Juleka's eyes widened as she started to run. She jumped off the table but was immediately caught by one of the hag's shadow people.
It then threw her towards the hag like a ball.
She landed and rolled on the floor with agony, but before she could let the feeling of pain to surface, the hag had already grabbed her with the hand.
She squeaked out of fear and surprise.
My my now., the hag smiled sinisterly., Look what we have here.
She then stroked the mouse's head gently, as if she were something precious or of high value.
The rarest meal of the century now within my grasp! It's still a shame though that you couldn't get to your full size.
Granny Spooks' eyes widened as an idea began to form in her head.
She turned towards her minions.
Bring me some salt!, she commanded, and quickly some of them started searching through the covers.
Soon deary, soon., she told Juleka., But then again, it wouldn't hurt to simply get another taste would it?
Granny Spooks opened her mouth and was about to begin sucking her breath out. However before she could do just that, loud noises and sounds were heard from somewhere outside.
Once more the hag showed an expression of shock as she looked towards the outside door, she then shifted towards Nathanael who was now lying on his knees.
Granny Spooks slowly walked towards him. She forced the boy to meet her gaze as she pulled him by the hair.
Didn't I told you earlier deary?, she spoke., That poltergeising will not aid you here.
As she said those words, Nathanael's fear grew, being as the hag was now at a dangerously close proximity to where he was. His pupils still dilated with his cerulean orbs reflecting the sight of Granny Spooks.
Pretty soon the utensils started shaking and the covers and cabinets began opening and closing repeatedly while making loud noises.
Granny Spooks simply scoffed however, appearing neither afraid nor impressed.
She sighed.
For the last time. Poltergeising will not-
Just before she could finish with that sentence, the plates and cups from the covers flew and launch themselves, some of them immediately broke while others levitated into a collective chaotic spiral above the ceiling. They were then eventually followed by various pots and pans, forks and knives, spoons and many others more.
The chairs and tables started acting crazy as they shook from gently to violently. The light bulb above them started flickering.
The all too recognizable blue energy to Nathanael made itself known when it became visible, making the entire room appear even more chaotic.
From the hag's grasp, Juleka stared in wonder at the sight.
Is this… Nathanael's weird thing?, she spoke to herself, now pondering if there was more to her classmate than just simply being able to talk to mice like her.
As the various objects flew, most of them managed to have hit and knocked most of those who were standing, including that of Granny Spooks.
Granny Spooks yelped and hissed at the items launched at her, forcing her to protect her head by using her arms as a shield.
Ok! Ok! I guess polterguising works after all!, the hag commented.
Just then the flickering light bulb above blew itself a fuse until it shattered, causing the entire room to go dark.
None but the shadow people could see well in the dark, but even then they were also preoccupied by the floating pots and pans.
If not for the door, the dining room would probably have become completely pitch black.
A large pot then flung directly towards the hag, allowing for the crone to loose her balance and fall down on the floor. More items then flew to her, almost covering her entire form as she struggled to swipe them off.
She groaned furiously.
When Nathanael shook his head and fell back into focus, he immediately saw his chance and stood up hurriedly.
He grabbed Juleka when she fell from the hag's hand, giving her little time to process the jolt of pain she once again felt. Then he immediately went heading towards Melanina. He quickly took the weak naiad, taking her arms and carrying her by his back.
After then he quickly ran exiting through the door, intending to get away as fast as his two weak legs could take him.
Stop them!, the hag ordered, but unfortunately none of the shadow people responded as all were still too busy dodging to listen.
Molko took a picture frame hanging from the wall, after that he threw the aforementioned object down with force, he then jumped from the table he was standing on before pushing and dropping the said table allowing for a loud *thud* to be created.
He then placed his two hands together in a clapping position as if he were cleaning off some dirt after his labor.
With the rabbit by his side he exclaimed while letting out a tired breath, Well, that should take care of that.
Just then he saw from his blue sclera that the lights had somehow started flickering, and that he heard from his slightly pointed ears the sounds of footsteps coming towards him in a rather fast pace. Expecting some sort of danger, the leprechaun was about to sprint and find himself a hiding spot before becoming quite surprised when he saw that it was actually his former prison mate running with a fainted grey naiad dragged along on his back.
What did you just do?!, the leprechaun exclaimed.
Run!, was the only thing he had heard from the boy before he passed by him.
Although still baffled and confused, the leprechaun nevertheless decided to heed the redhead's warning and ran immediately as well. But just before he could he first accidentally drifted his eyes on the white rabbit. Not knowing on what to do, he reluctantly decided to take the white furry critter with him as he carried it by his arms.
As the group were fleeing away they managed to have almost neared to the end of the hallway.
There's the door over there., Juleka said with a quick tone., If you give me some time, maybe I could-
The door she mentioned then burst into pieces as its remains scattered into splinters and small broken pieces of wood.
He and the leprechaun hurriedly climbed up the stairs when they reached it.
Or that could work too., she spluttered.
They climbed the flight of stairs and headed up, the crate from earlier that was supposed to conceal the entrance to Granny Spooks' lair exploded like the door before it. All by the same blue energy.
When they now exited and got to the old warehouse above, the leprechaun looked to Nathanael and asked,
Hey wait! *pant* How come that your magic is already functioning?
Set-ling…, Melanina mumbled, her eyes still too feeble to even open.
They all took that as a good sign however, as that meant that she was at least still strong enough to respond to what she was hearing. (albeit fairly)
Molko was first to arrive at the door, and despite minor difficulty, he still managed to have opened it.
Juleka thanked that the reported hauntings had made the door unlocked in the first place.
He let Nathanael exit first before he himself got out.
The breeze of the evening was basically paradise to theirs flesh, for its cool air brought in a rush of refreshment and freedom within it, especially with the Seine not that far.
The Seine.
Just about on the other side of the road and over the restricted fence, was the famous Seine river itself, and along with it Melanina's salvation.
Not wasting any time Nathanael headed towards it, but he was immediately halted by the sounds of the naiad's whimpers.
No. Not the Seine. Please. Not the Seine.
He looked at her with a baffled look.
Why wouldn't she want to go to the Seine?, he thought.
He looked to Juleka if she knew, but unfortunately she was just as clueless as he was.
Dark looming silhouettes moved from the every part of the cemented surface before they took their ethereal forms.
Ok. I'll admit, called the voice that instantly sent them shivers.
Their bodies shook as they were all slowly forced to look behind them.
That was a rather surprising stunt you did there young deary., her face then transformed into a scowl., But now playtime is over.
She charged forward towards them in a speed they didn't expect she had, after that she jumped, ready to pounce whoever one of them was unfortunate enough.
But just before they could react and move out of the way, the hag was abruptly pushed out of target by a black force.
When the hag stood up and recovered their focus, and the others after shaking off their state of shock, all were stunned to find a particular shadow person wearing a fedora like hat.
It look towards Granny Spooks straight, its hand forming into fists as if it were readying for a fight. But behind its sudden boldness was its obvious fear as its body shook and its eyes appearing nervous.
You dare challenge me?!, Granny Spooks spoke with an angered tone.
She lifted up her pendant and a flash of red light appeared just as before.
The shadow person attempted to flee but was immediately sucked into the jewel.
No!, Juleka cried out in a low voice.
However it was too late, for the pendant had now stopped glowing, and the shadow boy was no longer in sight.
Now would anyone else like to make some sort of stunt?!, the crone shouted out from the top of her lungs, her eyes glaring with rage at her minions who had flinched, and some bowing their heads for mercy.
No. Alright then., she turned around and faced the group of teenagers again.
She grinned widely at them with her toothless smirk before launching herself towards them once more.
They dodged her immediately but she continued on trying to catch them. They tried to avoid her for as much as they could, but despite her old physiology, the hag proved to be a force not to be underestimated with.
As they continued on with playing a deadlier version of tag, it would only eventually come to a point where someone would grow tired, slow down, and get caught.
And that someone was Molko.
When the hag landed in front of him, the leprechaun froze, he gasped while he accidentally let go of the rabbit from his arms as it hopped away.
The green clothed being took a step back cautiously, worry and fear riding on his mind.
The hag then launched herself straight at him, and with little time his immediate instinctual course of action was to snap his fingers.
*Snap*
From above Granny Spooks' head four green swirls of lights appeared and intermixed with each other. When they disappeared a huge dishpan came forth and quickly dropped itself on the hag's crown.
The hag was eventually knocked out by this as she fell into unconsciousness.
This gave him the opportunity to escape along with Nathanael while all the shadow people were still too busy being distracted with tending Granny Spooks.
The group ran as fast as they could, avoiding streets where crowds of people were. Fleeing was difficult on Nathanael's part considering on the extra loan he was carrying, and Molko didn't seem to be doing quite fine either, as, according to his rather recent observations, leprechauns weren't exactly made for running.
Not so long after, the group had reached Champs de Mars, where luckily not a single soul was in sight to see them enter.
They all then stopped, taking in a brief rest to catch their own breaths.
Nathanael felt as if he was about to puke after all the running and terror. He panted heavily and gulped as he grabbed for his inhaler.
As he pressed the button, the boy's mind had started to calm down, and with that his head had gone clearer and his eyes drifted towards the leprechaun.
What was that?!, he blurted out, his voice emitted with exhaustion.
What was what?, the leprechaun raised a brow, his tone with fatigue just as well.
You know, that? *pant* That? Where did that dishpan come from?
The leprechaun now understood.
Oh that *pant* that was just my magic finally working.
Your magic?
Aye., Molko confirmed., In case you have forgotten you're now dealing with forces that you might not be used to lad. *pant* *gulp* As a leprechaun my magic allows me to use a certain space, kind of like a special storage locker, or what many would call as our pot of gold. *pant* In there we could place our valuables then access them later whenever we want. Each leprechaun has one the moment they were born.
Nathanael panted while he tried to grasp Molko's words, nodding his head in response. Suddenly the redhead felt as if the gears inside his head started to turn.
Can- *pant* can you also use that to teleport yourself?
Molko's head tilted.
You mean use it as a form of transport? *pant* *pant* Aye, sure why not. I have done that a lot of times before.
Can you use it to get us out of here?
It was then that Molko had finally apprehended on what the other was getting at.
Using his magic in order to flee was undoubtedly a good idea, except-
I-I guess I can. There-there's just one problem with that though?
And what's that?, Juleka asked from Nathanael's shoulders. And despite not being able to understand her squeaks, he still responded by appearing rather bashful.
I-, he explained sheepishly., I never really e-ever had the chance to use my magic to transport living people before. The closest I can think of was when I transported myself off a market place with a duck for my uncle's birthday. So… I guess what I'm trying to say is that… I can only transport one living being at a time.
Dread sweep in into both the listeners.
So, you're saying is that you can only take one of us?
The leprechaun didn't say a word, but he nodded his head to confirm that what Nathanael had said was true.
So… whose it going to be then?, he mentally told himself.
It was a tough decision there was no doubt about that. Whatever happens may decide the fates of those who would be left behind.
Did he want to be the one whom Molko escapes with? Of course he did. That was literally the entire point, to get away from the hag.
He didn't want to be her dinner!
But just then, he thought he'd heard something from afar. He looked towards that direction and he could have sworn that he saw a glimpse of a shadow moving.
Mmm…
He then looked to his shoulder and saw Melanina painfully moaning. She looked as if she wanted to move or stand but was unfortunately too weak to do so.
Nathanael gave her a sympathetic look, and it was then that he made his choice.
Then take her with you.
Molko stood up as he looked surprise at him.
What!, he asked.
There's no time for questioning., Nathanael said. He bent down, took the naiad off his back, and then implied for Molko to take her, to which he did.
Take Melanina somewhere where there's water, and make sure that it's far away from here as possible.
But- but what about you?
Nathanael shivered.
Don't-don't worry about me. Melanina is the one who needs help. Go!
Molko was utterly shock, his jaw dropping, his body frozen. Since the moment he had met the redhead, all he saw from him was a fearful coward, someone who was probably no different to the Tuatha de dannann elves when they made the agreement to give up their own freedom so that they could save their own skins. But now, now he was just speechless. How was it even possible to be a coward and yet at the same time be able to show courage.
True courage.
Courage for the sake of others.
Go!, Nathanael repeated.
Molko look to Nathanael, then to Melanina, then back to Nathanael again.
I'll get back for you two as fast as I can. I promise., he stated seriously.
Nathanael and Juleka nodded before Nathanael stood up and sprinted away.
Molko watched them leave, hoping for the best for them. He was about to prepare snapping his fingers again before-
Please., Melanina pleaded., Not the Seine. Not the river. Anywhere but the Seine.
He looked at her curiously but nodded his head anyway.
And there from the snap of his finger, and from the four lights of green, both the naiad and the leprechaun had disappeared into thin air.
Nathanael ran into the area where the trees grew. He drifted into every direction to see if everything was clear while taking hold of a branch to balance his tired body. Once he did he used his right arm and grabbed Juleka from his shoulder.
What are you doing?, the mouse shrieked.
Letting you off.
The boy kneeled as he placed Juleka down on the ground.
What?
Look. Just because that I decided to be left behind doesn't mean that you should either. You have a better chance than I do to get away from Granny Spooks! So run.
He was about to stand up again but Juleka interrupted him.
You can't do this.
The boy looked down at her again.
Juleka this is no time to argue.
I'm not arguing I'm… arguing (gosh she wished that she talked more often).
This however was apparently enough for Nathanael to loose some of his stress and stare at her perplexed.
Huh?
Look. I practically spent my entire night to save you., irritation taking over the clarity of her tone., So-so the least you could do is to not make all that an entire waste.
I know that., Nathanael retorted., And that's why I'm repaying you by letting you run. So go.
No., Juleka stubbornly refused. Almost as if she was like a little kid being fed broccoli.
Nathanael stared at her infuriated (was she always this obstinate).
-Go.
-No.
-Go!
-No.
-Go!
-No!
She shouted the last part, making Nathanael flinch a bit.
-Go.
-I said no.
Nathanael gritted his teeth as he took some inhales. Suddenly he gulped before slightly collapsing, his left hand hiding both his eyes out of exhaustion. Thoughts and unwanted images hitting at him like a bullet train.
You're right. I can't do this., he muttered in defeat.
Juleka looked worriedly at him before her ears perked up.
Hide., she warned.
Nathanael quickly came back into his senses as he grabbed the mouse and hid behind a nearby tree.
Both of them peeked and saw a couple of shadow people forming and emerging from the ground. They spoke in their strange language, appearing to be talking about something, probably regarding their whereabouts.
Luckily they only stayed for a few seconds before leaving.
The teenagers sighed.
That was close., Nathanael muttered. He then returned his view back to Juleka who was standing on his hand.
How do you do this?, he asked.
Juleka responded by tilting her head.
What do you mean?
I mean this. How do you manage to stay cool after all this chaos? Doesn't it at least bother you knowing that you've basically gambled your own life a number of times all in one evening?
The girl thought about what he said before making out her answer.
I don't know? Guess I just try my best to think of something else.
Try your best?
Juleka nodded before continuing.
Sometimes distractions are necessary to live in this world, or in this case distracting the mind from thinking about the bad stuff.
Nathanael smirked, fully knowing of what she meant.
They both raised their heads to the starry skies, enjoying for the first time the quietness that the evening brought.
Juleka made a knowing look as she gazed upon the balls of light above, a relaxing smile creping around her lips.
So… was that the reason why you were running earlier?
The two of them had now switched roles as it was now Nathanael's turn to look at her confused. Juleka saw this and clarified.
This morning when we met at that alley, you seemed to have been running away from something? Did that had something to do with that thing you did back at the dining room?
Nathanael showed nervousness as he avoided her gaze. But it was enough for Juleka to know that the answer was yes.
Then that means that the thing with Sabrina's dad. That was you as well?
Again no verbal response, however he did managed to have made a nod.
Promise me you won't tell anyone., Nathanael practically begged.
Juleka glance at him teasingly.
Oh, and who would I tell? I'm a mouse remember? And so long as I'm like this, I'm pretty much stuck having you for a conversationalist.
It was then that a smile had crept on Nathanael's lips as well.
Hey that's not fair, you make me sound as if I was someone too boring to talk to.
Say what you will., the girl told., I'm just getting back at you with that cheese joke you made.
Oh my God., Nathanael spoke with a mocking-shock expression, I can't believe you still remember that after all this.
Well, it was very offensive. We mice are individuals too you know?
They both chuckled out of sheer hilarity, and after that they sighed simultaneously as they allowed the comforting silence to return.
The silence was later broken by Juleka.
So what are we going to do now?
Nathanael sat while his back was still against the tree.
I don't know. Granny Spooks is one thing, but it's going to be a lot tougher with those shadow people at her command.
Yeah., Juleka responded., Can't fight with you there.
Though I am shock that one of them had actually tried to help us.
Yeah., she spoke, a guilty feeling coursing through to her., Would you believe me if I told you that that same shadow guy was also the one that lead me to find you this evening?
He looked at her with a "no way" face.
Seriously? Huh. Then I guess their not all that bad after all.
Maybe., told the girl., it's just too bad that they all have to get boss around by someone so… Chloe-ish.
Nathanael giggled at her description.
Yeah. Chloe-ish., his face then turned into a serious one., What's up with that anyway?
You saw what she did with that pendant right?
The boy nodded as a yes.
I think that… for some odd reason, that those shadow people of hers are somehow bounded by that jewel. You know, like a genie. And, so long as she has that jewel thing, they would obey her every command as well.
Nathanael placed his finger under his chin as he thought of his classmate's explanation.
So… if that's the case, then that means that theirs actually a way to beat her.
The mouse raised her ears when she heard that.
Although it might be a stretch to assume, but somehow I think that a way in defeating her is to rid her of her support club.
And how are you going to do that?, asked the girl.
By destroying her pendant., he stated simply., Rid her pendant, rid her lackeys.
Juleka tilted her head at that.
Wait. So you mean like what Ladybug and Chat Noir always do?
Nathanael looked bewilderedly as he realized the comparison of his plan with that of the daily battle's of their superheroes.
Yes., he sheepishly admitted., Like what Ladybug and Chat Noir always do.
Juleka understood as she climbed to Nathanael's shoulder.
Then let's go then.
Let's?
The mouse nodded.
Yeah. "Let's". Like I said, so long as I'm a mouse, I'm going to be stuck following you. And if you're going to do this, then… I might as well get this evening over with. You know?
He stared at her with widened eyes, blinking for about two or three times before shaking himself off his trance.
Are you sure about that?
Not really., she confessed., But I've gone this far anyway. So, tell me what you got.
Nathanael gave her an appreciative smile, and after that he began explaining.
Standing underneath the Eiffel tower was where Nathanael kept his ground. Every ounce of whatever confidence he had he showed, only to hide his true cowering self quavering on the inside.
While still looking ahead of himself, the boy whispered in a low tone.
Are you ready?
Hidden in one of the boy's jacket pocket, Juleka whispered back.
Ready as I'll ever be., her voice quaked a bit on that last part.
He then returned his view back in front him.
It wasn't long before a number of sentient shadow beings appeared, accompanied by the wicked hag of the Seine.
Ah… finally given up now deary?, she then proceeded to laugh maniacally with the shadow people following after.
Nathanael however did not speak a word, instead continuing to stand his ground.
When the hag stopped laughing she then noticed that something, or someone, was missing.
What's this? Where is she? Where's the mouse?!
She's no longer here., the boy answered to the best of his capabilities.
The hag growled.
Do not play games with me boy! I can literally smell her scent at this very location! So hand over your familiar to me now!
Nathanael winced a bit, but tried his best to not express it. He then closed his eyes and concentrated.
Please work.
Granny Spooks' patience wavered, and before Nathanael knew it the hag started running straight towards him.
The space that separated them shrank littler and littler, and with that the boy's panic grew. He attempted to close his eyes to focus but the feeling of the hag approaching in such speed became too overwhelming.
He was forced to open his eyes again and hicked, but fortunately that was also the moment when a bunch of small rocks that had been only previously sitting on the ground, began to float while emanating a blue glow.
One of the rocks launched itself straight to Granny Spooks' head while the others did their job in distracting the shadow people.
Phase 1, complete.
As Granny Spooks struggled in covering her head, the hag cried out.
Not again!, she whined.
From this time the tiny mouse had now climbed out of Nathanael's pocket as she went to his shoulder.
You're up for this?, the redhead asked in a low tone.
He then took out a rock from another of his pocket and placed all his willpower onto it.
Please work! Please work! Please work!
His prayers were quickly answered when the stone became surrounded by a blue aura.
Not a minute after the mouse jumped onto the rock and rode as it shot straight to Granny Spooks.
Juleka hopped from the rock, and onto the hag while she was still distracted.
She climbed onto the back of her neck and went to unlock her necklace.
NO!, the hag shouted in panic. She attempted to grab her but Juleka managed to have avoided her hands.
An idea then came to the hag as she grabbed a pouch from her pocket.
Juleka was almost done with her task till suddenly tiny white grains of what seemed to be salt was sprinkled over her.
Suddenly her entire body became engulfed by what appeared like purple flames. Her form grew in size until when the flames were gone, Juleka was quickly shocked to find that she was now back in her regular old appearance.
Using her moment of confusion as an opportunity, the hag grabbed her arms and shoulder threw her into the ground. Juleka's back ached in agony at the sudden pain before the feeling of something hopping onto her chest caused her to gasp and jolt at the abrupt sensation.
The hag looked at her sinisterly before she cupped her cheeks. She went closer to the girl's face as she started opening her own mouth. It wasn't long until she began consuming the young teen's lifeforce.
JULEK-, Nathanael cried, but before he could finish, the shadow people appeared from behind him and tackled him onto his knees, almost covering his entire form. He struggled to break free, but their clutch over him was too strong.
As purple colored air exited from her mouth, the poor girl felt herself growing dizzy with the feeling of fatigue. She attempted to move her arms, or legs, or anything, but quickly found out that she couldn't. Her entire body was now completely paralyzed.
Her copper eyes slowly drooped as her energy drained, the sensation and feeling of tiredness and exhaustion flowing throughout her veins.
Time itself seemed to have slowed down for Juleka, as if what was going on now could go on forever.
The image of death then came into mind, and for some unknown reasons, she seemed to have welcomed it.
Death. Was there really something far worst that that? No longer will she have to deal with her everyday issues in life, no longer will she have to face any name calling or unfair judgements, no longer will she morn or miss anyone, no longer will she shed a tear.
All there will be is the serene calmness that she'd heard that comes with the unconditional embrace of Sister Death, all there will ever be is eternal silence.
And if ever she would end up finding herself in some sort of Afterlife like either Heaven, Purgatory, or even Hell, she was sure that any one of those places were better than what her life was.
She was ready to face the arrival of the Angel of Death, and she was prepared to leave the mortal realm right then and there. But as she welcomed her fate, flashes and pictures suddenly came into vision. She remembered every moment in her life, both good and bad. From the teasing of her kindergarten classmates, to her first meeting Rose. From Marinette helping her with her class photo jinx, to Chloe throwing her necklace out of disgust.
Then her mind directed towards her family, and all the happy moments she had with her mother, brother, and… and her father.
A memory from her past then came into picture, an image of her mother crying alone at the deck in the middle of the night.
A boy with black hair had simply watched her from behind a door, quiet, silent, helpless, usual soulful blue eyes appearing empty and sorrowful.
From behind the boy a little girl stood, holding one of her odd looking dolls by her arms. At that time she did not truly understood on what was going on, but now that she had grown, she knew.
She can't them. She couldn't leave them. She just couldn't.
Suddenly a new found determination boiled inside of Juleka. Her copper eyes changing and violently glowing into that of violet, a dormant strength she didn't knew she had broke loose of the paralyzing effect that the hag had inflicted on her. She gritted her teeth as she managed to have grabbed of the pendant before throwing it.
Utterly startled, the hag then stopped from her feeding, immediately jumping from the girl's chest as she quickly went to retrieve her pendant.
From where Nathanael was he saw on how the events had transpired. He directed his head to where the necklace had landed. He saw Granny Spooks quickly rushing towards it and had to quickly make out of a way for him to prevent that.
His attention then took focus on a random rock flying by as he willed it to his command.
Like a meteor crashing onto a planet, the rock in question shot itself straight to the pendant, shattering the red gem into various pieces.
NO!, she cried, a mortified face forming.
The newly broken gem enveloped itself in darkness before emerging from it, a number of shadow people.
The shadow people who were pinning Nathanael down hurriedly went to their fellow comrades, releasing the boy in the process.
The two groups rejoiced in their reunion before glaring their red eyes furiously at Granny Spooks.
Now now my dearies, let us not do something so-so extreme here., she raised her two palms in an attempt for protection as she took a few steps backwards.
We can all talk about this? I mean, remember all of the great times we all had?
No matter how she tried to persuade them the shadows only continued looming over her, with their eyes filled with vengeance.
Have I not been like a grandmother to you?
It was then that her former slaves lashed out and attacked her.
Granny Spooks attempted to flee but it was eventually too late as the shadow people swirled around her like a funnel.
After then both Granny Spooks and the shadow people had disappeared, with the last thing the two fellow classmates hearing from her were her cries for plea.
Nathanael quickly rushed to Juleka's aid as the later sat up while coughing, holding the top of her head to elevate from the sickening drowsiness she felt.
Her eyes returned into copper as they both stared dumbfounded at the spot where their pursuers had vanished. Eye balls still in shock at the scene they had just witnessed.
What just happened?, Juleka managed to have asked.
I think- I think it's all over. We done it., Nathanael answered.
Just as he said that a silhouette came and approached them as it materialized.
Both of them twitched until they saw of which shadow person it was.
The one with the derby hat looked at them then glanced at where its old mistress had been last seen before returning to them again, its serious eyes changed into that one of pleased as it took off its hat and bowed down in gratitude.
Not knowing on what to respond the two teens simply nodded at it, while their jaws were still dropping.
After then the shadow nodded back as it went away, disappearing from sighed as it left, leaving only the two of them at the park.
An awkward silence then filled the air as the both of them looked at each other.
Unsure of what to say the redhead decided to ask the first thing that went to his head.
So, what now?
The girl looked at him before she drifted her eyes down.
Well, I don't know about you? But I think it's time for me to get back home.
The young artist gave her a puzzled expression before she sighed and proceeded.
It was wrong of me to even think of leaving them, even if that wasn't my direct reason for doing so. And I don't really want them to worry about me more than they should., she exhaled., I have to go back.
Oh., was all Nathanael managed to say.
How about you?, it was Juleka's turn to ask., What are you going to do from here?
Well…, the boy replied, his expression showing unsurity. It was clear that he now wanted to return to his own home as well. But after witnessing of what he was capable of, she couldn't truly blame him for being afraid to show his face to his family. After all, that was how she was feeling too.
And so with that, the girl sighed once more.
I get it., she told him, causing the one she was talking with to turn to her., I won't try to push you into making a choice. However, she gave him a serious look., if you were to allow me to suggest, then, I think, that you should do the same as well.
The boy flinched at what she was saying to him, turning his gaze away from her.
I don't think I can.
I don't think I can either., Juleka admitted.
The boy turned his face to her again.
One more sigh the girl released from her mouth.
But it wouldn't be fair for them, would it? Doesn't mean we don't know what's happening to us right now doesn't mean that they should too. We've ran away from home long enough, and…let's just confess, she giggled at the last part., we both have zero ideas on what its like to live on our own.
Nathanael cracked a chuckle at that, aware of the fact that she was right. He then dropped his view to look at the floor below, pondering on what to do next from here.
With a release of his own breath, Nathanael decided to take her word for it.
Alright., he spoke, he then stood up to his two feet again., Let's go.
The two teens then went on their way, the luggage of nervousness they carried with them as they gone. Unbeknownst to the both of them however was that from the branches of the near by trees a green orb of light was watching them from afar before quietly following their trail.
Ma'am. If you could only calm down, maybe we could-
Calm down! Don't you tell ME to calm down!, Anarka shouted, no longer holding her composure as tears had now clouded her field of visions., In case ya' haven't noticed? MY DAUGHTER IS STILL MISSING! So how on Earth could ya' possibly tell me to calm down!
Lieutenant Rogers could do nothing but stare sympathetically at her. He knew that if he was at her position he would most definitely have a hard time containing himself as well.
In his part, it was truly a rare sight to find the normally head strong Anarka to break down into sobbing and crying, the last time he had seen such a sight was about 11 years ago, and even then she did not acted the same way as she did now.
It was obvious that she was in major stress, but even as an officer he knew that he was bad at comforting people. He drifted his eyes towards different directions, finding someone who could be of help, but alas he could not. For even her son was too busy pacing back and forth from their boat's deck while having his phone in hand, no doubt trying his own attempts at finding his sister.
The police man sighed.
Please Roger., Anarka's voice quaked., Please. I can't-I can't loose another one. Please. Please find her.
Rogers made a serious look as he fixed his hat and nodded to the woman.
But just then, as he was about to say a word, a girl came walking into the presence, a nervous posture while she rubbed her other arm.
Anarka stood froze while the girl tried her best to meet her mother's gaze. Not long after that the middle aged woman sprinted towards the girl. She came to her and hugged her in her arms.
I'm sorry., the girl whispered.
Shhh. It's alright now., replied Anarka, tears of joy replacing tears of worry.
A few seconds later and the blue haired boy joined in the embrace.
And it was here since the day had first started that Juleka had finally felt secured.
Meanwhile in another part of the city, a red haired boy anxiously walked to his apartment building. He was very much thankful that it was now late, as he didn't want to interact with anybody right now, even to strangers. He raised his head up and looked towards the window where his home was, seeing as the lights there were still on.
He huffed and sighed as he took a moment to ponder what he was going to do, and immediately he released a breath as she concluded,
He can't do this.
Nathanael looked towards the window again, unsure of what he was going to do next. He didn't want to face his mothers, not just yet, but at the same time his entire body was now aching and all he wanted to do was to lie down in his comfy old bed.
Fortunately for him though (he turned his head towards the emergency fire exit) that sometimes having two overprotective mothers had its upsides.
Within the apartment building the two women sat on their respective seats while placing all of their focuses on single sock. They were shutting their eyes tightly in full concentration, furrowing their brows out in frustration.
Gah! Still nothing., the redhead groaned.
Maybe this would have been a lot better if someone didn't insist replacing all his old socks with new ones., spoke Wendy passive-aggressively.
Naomi raised her face and looked at her.
Hey, that's not fair, as I recall you were fully on board with the idea as well. And why are you even blaming me! He already wore it didn't he?
Yeah. When he tried it.
The two of them began to argue on who was at the right, and who was at the wrong. Meanwhile Shadow lay down sleepily while looking at them with tired eyes and yawned.
Suddenly the cat's ears went to alert mode when it heard some noises.
Ladies?, Shadow called, but unfortunately his voice was still too weak for them to hear. He had to repeat himself a couple more times before he could snatch their attention.
Finally when the two responded, they both looked at the feline before hearing the noises.
They all listened intently and found that the noises were coming from behind Nathanael's door.
Both women grabbed the nearest object they could get before cautiously heading towards said door.
When they got their, all that was left was to open it.
Naomi grabbed the knob while Wendy started counting.
In 1…2…NOW!
They burst into the room already prepared to fight off any possible intruder, but instead who they saw was not a thief or any of that type, but their little tomate running around his room while trying desperately to make as little noises as possible as all his belongings went floating around. When he finally took notice that the door was open, all the items had simply fallen down creating various crashing noises.
He stared dumbfounded at the sighed of the two women and the cat while at the same time they were staring back at him shocked.
Only a single word had left his vocabulary at that very moment, and he gulped before nervously saying it.
I'm home.
Back at the Seine when all has calm and quieted, the three Couffaines, after a moment of their little reunion, had decided to call everything a night, which to Juleka was a major relief as that would save her the troubles of finding explanations and excuses until tomorrow.
Her and her brother had already gone to their respective cabins while Anarka was finishing things up with the police.
Upon seeing her bed the first thing that Juleka did was to immediately flop on it.
How she already missed this.
She took her soft pillow and placed it on top her face.
Now that she finally had some time with herself with no hags or sentient shadows pursuing her, the girl took the chance to review the day she had.
To describe all the happenings of today was in all essence impossible. At the very least the words she would use would be wild, crazy, freaky, and all not in the usually good way.
She still didn't understand on how she had turned into a rodent in the first place, or how Granny Spooks managed to have turned her back.
She recalled being chased by a cat, chased by a number of shadow people, chased by a mad old crone, until she remembered the words Nathanael said to her,
Doesn't it at least bother you knowing that you've basically gambled your own life a number of times all in one evening?
Now that she truly had time for herself the girl reminisced all the moments she had where she took all those risks. From finding her fellow classmate, to voluntarily searching for the keys, to entering the crone's dinning area alone, to having her very breath (if she wanted to call it that) get literally sucked out of her. She quickly jolted up after being reminded of that as she quickly lied down after.
Only now did she fully realize on how many times she was that close on the brink of death and the very simple thought of that had scared her.
She was interrupted from her moment of shock however when she heard noises. At first she brushed it of as her own imaginations but suddenly another noise came by followed by another.
It first seemed to have been coming from her book shelf, then to her guitar, then to her other shelf, till finally it stopped to her study desk.
A few more noises continued from there as Juleka slowly headed towards it with a book in hand as a weapon. When she got to the aforementioned desk she cautiously peered before-
Umm… Hello there.
The girl dropped her book after being startled, covering her mouth before she could even manage to scream as she gasped.
Standing on her study desk was a small toy sized creature, obviously female, with green skin and hair that was tied into a bun, and insectoid like wings folded behind her back, while also sporting a dress made out of leaves.
The being in question threw its arms in front of her cautiously while making a pleading face.
I apologize for intruding your home., said the little insectoid girl., But my people are in desperate need of your help.
Authors Note: And that concludes for this chapter. For those who may be wondering, the idea where a leprechauns' pot of gold being more of a metaphor rather than being literal was inspired from the American Gods series by Neil Gaiman along with its film adaption (although I haven't really watched to series yet). The reason for this is because one of the characters, Mad Sweeney ( who is almost always described as a leprechaun) is shown to be quite capable of pulling things out into thin air and has also been said to store his treasures inside a space that only he can access known as his pot of gold.
And so with that now done, I hope that all of you will have a wonderful day or night depending on which part of the world you're on. Stay safe, stay caring, stay inspired in life!
Take care!
