Chapter 14: When Fire Water Plasma and Rockets Mix
(A/N: Been extra busy at work as of late so I'm unsure how the frequency of chapters will be. On the other hand, I'm excited to have most of the main cast here in the story now, hopefully they'll make it out of this one in one piece.)
General
White had a triumphant look on her face as the rest of the team gave her a questioning look.
"Mewtwo was focusing Amanda and I because the mastermind must be near where we were originally standing!" White stated with a big smile.
Red and co. pondered on the revelation that was just shared with them and Platina was the first one to speak up.
"If that's true, then they might be hiding underneath the stage!" With that proclamation, she had Empoleon fire a flash cannon at the wooden stage beneath Mewtwo's feet.
A strong reaction instantly came from Mewtwo as his eyes flared up and he threw up a strong psychic barrier to deflect the flash cannon.
"Well… looks like you were onto something White, you're amazing!" Red praised her with a huge smile and then directing his attention to Lax as he tried to come up with a plan.
Unlucky for Red, if he had kept his attention on White a bit longer he would have been rewarded with a beautiful crimson hue adorning her cheeks as she was thoroughly embarrassed and happy for the praise simultaneously.
"If only Black could be half the gentleman that Red is… sigh he never pays attention to me unless I spell it out for him" White lamented to herself.
Meanwhile in serious life or death battle land… Red muttered "sorry about this Lisia" before giving Lax the command for Giga Impact.
As Snorlax started his charge, Mewtwo tensed himself as he prepared to receive the powerful attack. Mewtwo instinctively knew that there was no way just psychic power could stop a move of this caliber in its tracks.
Thus, Mewtwo decided to prepare a powerful barrier in front of himself to receive the move.
Unfortunately for Mewtwo, the chance to use this barrier never came. He was flabbergasted to see that Lax was actually charging through the stage!?
The normally sturdy wooden boards splintered like flimsy plywood before the might of Lax's charge.
Mewtwo noticeable panicked as the charge got closer to his position and because he had no time to erect another powerful barrier in time, he suddenly inexplicably threw his physical body in the trajectory of the rampaging Snorlax.
With a loud *thud, Mewtwo was knocked back a good 20-30ft and the lower half of his body became a projectile as it broke through the remaining floorboards of the stage.
Smoke blossomed from the aftermath of their collision and when it settled, a cloaked figure could be seen exactly underneath where Mewtwo and White were originally standing.
Everyone on the team sent out their pokemon partners and tensed at the sight of the mysterious opponent.
Suddenly the cloaked figure threw off his cloak and underneath, a flamboyant rainbow colored R could be seen on the black suit he was wearing.
The blue haired man was probably in his thirties, had a bracelet with a gem on it and looked at the group while making a tsk sound. "It would seem I'm being interfered with again by you kids" He said with a look of disdain.
"Archer? What are you doing here?" Crys was the most surprised to see Archer here as she thought that Giovanni had "punished" Archer for his actions at the Shinjou Ruins during the Arceus incident.
Red and Blue on the other hand had also their own share of unpleasant experiences at the hands of Team Rocket and there admins so they were just as unhappy to see him as Crys was.
"That's what I should be asking you brats. You're no longer in the same league as Team Rainbow Rocket, so I would run away ASAP if I were you." Archer gave an arrogant smirk as he looked down on Red's squad.
"Team Rainbow Rocket? Aren't you guys Team Neo?" Red couldn't help but retort his thoughts aloud despite the gravity of the situation.
"Ah right, that's not something that concerns you nuisances, especially because Mewtwo is about to wipe you all out." Archer gave a cackle and as if on cue, Mewtwo got up slowly after finally recovering from Lax's giga impact.
"Don't try to bluff your way out of this, Mewtwo's weakest point is his defenses and nobody can just take Lax's giga impact that easily." Red noted as he looked over at the staggering Mewtwo.
"Sorry Mewtwo, I don't know what's wrong with you right now but we'll take you back for now and figure it out when we figure out where Blaine is. Lax let's finish it with another giga impact!" Red had waited for the moment where Lax would recharge from using giga impact and as a result, without missing a beat, Lax began his charge immediately as he had read Red's intentions perfectly.
"Heh, if you guys think you have the power to beat our new organization? You're vastly underestimating us then. Let's show them the power of the ultimate power, arise Mega Mewtwo X, wipe out our enemies." With that, Archer lifted his arm and the bracelet on his forearm began to glow.
The seemingly weakened Mewtwo began to glow, and transformed into a different buffer looking Mewtwo.
He proceeded to toss a powerful close combat against Lax and immediately knocked the formerly charging Lax out of the area.
Red recalled Lax and was perplexed at what he had just witnessed. He wasn't aware that Mewtwo, a manmade pokemon, had the ability to mega evolve.
"Mewtwo was already powerful before, isn't that just absurd Arceus?" Red lamented aloud about how ridiculous this situation was.
All the trainers present on Red's team had very limited experience with mega evolution. They had all heard of it before, but as for actually using it, it wasn't something that was commonly seen in their home regions.
Only Sapphire seemed to have any firsthand experience using it and she pulled out a bracelet from her bag while lamenting "I didn't think I'd have to use this for some lowly Team Rocket baddie."
She sent out Chic and tapped the Mega bracelet, Chic began to glow and became an even more imposing version of her original form.
The battler that she was, Sapphire took the initiative and let Chic charge forward with a blaze kick. While doing so, she let the rest of her teammates know that they would need to back her up as the matchup was still bad assuming this Mega Mewtwo X was still psychic type.
Red sent out Gyara, assuming his conjecture was correct, Mewtwo was probably a mix of psychic and fighting type which meant Gyara's high special defenses paired with his flying typing should be his best bet to handle the legendary mega pokemon.
Consequently, the other battlers in the group sent out their starters as well as they were their most trusted partners.
With Platina's Empoleon already on standby, Sapphires Chic, Blue's Blasty, Crys' Mega and Red's Gyara joined the battlefield and began trying to handle Mega Mewtwo X.
What became immediately apparent was that there was an unexpectedly large power disparity between Mewtwo and the dexholder's pokemon.
Chic was the only one who was able to constantly keep up with Mewtwo as her speed boost ability was constantly helping Chic match Mewtwo's teleporting and quick physical assaults.
For the rest of the team it was apparent that while they were able to launch and hit some attacks, Mega Mewtwo X was a whole different beast in terms of raw power.
He not only boasted stronger physical prowess than Gyara, he also still retained his signature psychic special attacks as he suppressed any of the faster but weaker moves heading his way.
While this was going on, Archer was cackling maniacally "Finally you get to see how it feels to be hopeless against a superior force, I don't even need to give Mewtwo any specific commands, just go wild and destroy these brats once and for all!"
Red was surprised that even Gyara couldn't overpower Mewtwo's physical prowess. He wasn't used to there being a disparity of raw power to this extent in his life. Even when he fought against Gold, the battle was close and there was a clear establishment of similar power levels between their well-raised teams.
In this case, it seemed like there was an uber force as their opponent and while they could still land hits, it was nothing like the other legendary pokemon battles he had encountered in his past adventures.
"Gah, this is so overpowered, I can't believe that a pokemon as strong as Mewtwo was even allowed to mega evolve by nature…" Red complained aloud but inwardly he was even more worried about the other Team Neo … or was it Team Rainbow Rocket(?) grunts that were still actively at battle with his other team members as well as audience members and contestants in the crowd.
If Team Rocket, Aqua, Magma, and Plasma were all collaborating here, they would be on a time limit before reinforcements would arrive. That meant that Red and his team had to defeat Mewtwo, and then force the rest of the grunts to retreat before things went out of control.
Platina was thinking similar things and she shouted at her team "alright we are going to need to think of some way to hold down Mewtwo or else this stalemate is going to continue until they overwhelm us."
Sapphire was the first to react to this request and she told Chic to take advantage of her next instance of speed boost and try to suppress Mewtwo.
Red heard this plan and recalled Gyara and send out Toge instead. "Toge give Chic a helping hand!"
Toge briefly looked at his trainer [Oh I see, you're trying to score points with Sapphire eh, not bad. I respect it brother] were Toge's immediate thoughts.
Then he noticed the rampaging Mewtwo and got down to business by using Helping Hand on Chic.
Chic felt the surge of power and quickly zoomed behind Mewtwo and began suppressing him with his arms.
Sapphire then quickly yelled out "Guys. Ultimate moves. Trust me!"
Everyone trusted her call despite the potential danger to Chic, they commanded their pokemon to use their signature moves and a mix of Hydro Cannon, Frenzy Plant, and Blast Burn (at point blank) fired upon Mewtwo.
Chic had the wherewithal to hold her Blast Burn until the last moment so Mewtwo wouldn't have a chance to block. When all the moves were about to hit the two of them, Chic used the power of Blast Burn to propel herself backwards resulting in a simultaneous combination of the ultimate elemental moves colliding with Mewtwo.
When the visual effects of their moves cleared out Mewtwo's figure was on the ground in his regular form.
He was clearly knocked out from that series of moves.
Red silently breathed a sigh of relief "I wasn't sure if we could defeat Mewtwo in his mega form before reinforcements arrived." He thought to himself.
While Mewtwo was dazed on the floor, Archer was basically dazed while standing.
"I-impossible, you couldn't possibly have defeated Mega Mewtwo X, Lord G told me that I would be unstoppable if I had him under my control." Archer was clearly panicking about the unexpected turn of events. As he was saying these things, the mechanical looking bracelet on his arm suddenly cracked and the gem on it shattered as well.
Mewtwo then groaned and slowly got up, the dexholders immediately tensed up again but Mewtwo suddenly announced "Team Rocket dares use me again? I swore I would never let myself lose control again, but it would seem that somehow you have managed to use me again. That means I'll have to at least keep my other promise, which is to destroy all evil that seeks to harm pokemon. Starting with you, Archer."
Mewtwo's psychic power flared up and he proceeded to flatten Archer on the ground. Blue then sent out Ditty (her Ditto) and had it become rope to tie up Archer. Mewtwo turned to the other grunts and almost simultaneously knocked them around as if they were play things.
Archer, who was currently tied up, yelled as loud as he could "Team Neo, retreat!"
Like rats scurrying away from a hunter, the grunts recalled their injured pokemon and then smoke started filling the area from smoke bombs that were thrown from somewhere in the crowd.
When the smoke had dissipated, most of the grunts were nowhere to be found with only the few captured ones remaining.
Mewtwo then turned to the group and with a much gentler look than before, he asked if everyone was doing alright.
Red was glad to see that his old friend had gone back to normal and Yellow took this opportunity to come by and greet Mewtwo again as well.
Mewtwo looked like he was relaxing a bit now that the battle was over, but suddenly his expression became stern again.
"Blaine has gone missing, and I suspect it's due to Team Neo's interference, I must go search for my partner before both of us suffer the consequences."
And with that, Mewtwo flew off into the distance leaving Red's team to try to make sense of everything that had just happened.
(A/N: Mega Mewtwo is ridiculous in the games so I wanted to display him as similarly strong in the pokespe universe. As far as I know, Sapphire should be the only one here who in canon has mega evolved but I haven't read the ORAS chapters of the manga so perhaps someone else also has experienced it. I personally am a big fan of mega evolution and wish that it was kept in Generation 8, but there are still other cool mechanics out there so I can't complain too much. Hopefully y'all enjoyed the chapter and make sure to stay safe out there what with all the Covid-19 scares going on.)
