Elsa woke up slightly confused. She was warm and comfortable. She felt at peace. She tried to move, and realized her body was being hold tight. She panicked for a moment and her eyes popped open as her head swung up. She immediately settled when her eyes focused on Anna. It was Anna. She set her head back down on the pillow as she wracked her brain trying to remember how she got here. This was not her bed. Then it hit her and she started trembling. She had lost control. She remembered the panic clawing at her throat and yelling at Gerda to leave before she lost her frail grip on her powers. The last thing she remembered was collapsing on the floor curled up in pain as she tried to get the curse back under her control and repress it back inside. Elsa was trapped in the remembered sensation of failure, the pain, the disappointment, and the shame. She didn't realize that her eyes were squeezed shut and that she was shaking. She was startled when she felt soft fingertips grazing across her forehead, brushing back her bangs from her face. She slowly opened her eyes to see her beloved sister's sea blue eyes gazing back at her with the gentlest smile etched on her face.
"Hey it's okay Elsie, I'm right here. You're okay… I promise."
Elsa then noticed tears welling in her baby sister's eyes and a long forgotten impulse took over. Elsa bolted up right ignoring her crying body and wrapped her sister in her arms slightly rocking her back and forth trying to sooth her sister. She immediately felt Anna's arms cling onto her as her voice quivered out, "I was so scared. I thought I was going to lose you."
Elsa was startled at what Anna said. Anna wasn't afraid of her, but for her. She clutched her baby sister closer to her chest.
"I'm right here, and I'm okay. More than okay. I'm right here with you. I'm sorry that I scared you so much. I never meant to..."
Elsa's voice trailed off as a thought registered in her mind. If she was in her old room, and the way Anna was clinging to her and said she was scared of what happened to her last night then that meant… OH GOD… Anna was in my room... She saw what I did!
Elsa immediately removed herself from Anna's arms and flew across the room until her back was pressed against the corner. Her body screamed in protest, but that didn't matter right now. It was the least of Elsa's worries.
"I'm sorry… I'm sorry… please… I didn't mean it. I'm sorry!"
Anna froze as she saw her sister almost shrink in the corner begging… begging for forgiveness and understanding. She was horrified that was Elsa's initial reaction. What has happened over the years to get Elsa's reaction to become as such when clearly she needed help, but instead here she is begging for forgiveness. Anna had to swallow down her anger for a moment and focus on Elsa right now. She needed to calm her down and reassure her first. The temperature was starting to drop as Elsa started to spiral. Anna needed to cut this off quickly before Elsa slipped too far.
"Shush… Elsie it's okay. You did nothing wrong. Everyone is okay. YOU are okay. You are safe. I need you to breath with me now."
Anna had now managed to cross the room over to where Elsa was without startling the poor girl even more. She stood right in front of where Elsa was half hunched in the corner. Anna bent her head down a bit to bring her face in view of Elsa's so she could hold eye contact. She extended her arms out a bit with her palms facing upwards. Anna left them hanging in the air space between them.
"I'm right here Elsie. Ground yourself with me if you need too. I won't touch you until you want it. Your terms okay?"
Elsa's breathing was ragged, and she wanted to slam her eyes shut and block everything out, but her eyes were locked with Anna's and she couldn't find any will power not to keep the gaze. She flinched a bit and her breath was caught in her throat for a moment when Anna shifted closer. She almost felt trapped, but Anna stopped half way and left her arms out in invitation for her to decide if and when she wanted contact. Elsa almost cried at this. Anna was trying so hard for her. As her thinking became more clear and focused, Elsa saw how Anna's muscles twitch as if she wanted to wrap her up in her arms and hold her close, but was restraining herself for Elsa's sake. Elsa wasn't sure how Anna seemed to accurately know she wouldn't responded positively if she was wrapped up in an embrace. Her breathing slowly evened out, and her fingers twitched wanting to reach out and grab Anna's offered hands, but she felt too guilty never mind she didn't trust herself to stay in control enough to keep Anna safe.
"There you go Elsie. Are you back with me now?"
Elsa gave a small nod back to Anna otherwise she refused to let her body move at all. Like approaching a baby reindeer Anna slowly and steadily reached forward and gathered Elsa into her arms and held her close for a moment. Elsa's eyes slipped shut as she felt the tension slip from her body and she released a shuddering breath. Suddenly she could feel Anna's warmth and a small smile graced her lips as she allowed herself to absorb the sensation. Anna wasn't happy that Elsa stood there with her arms limp at her sides refusing to let them touch her at all, but she was happy and relieved when she felt Elsa just melt into her. One of her hands slipped up into Elsa's hair and she softly stroked it. She almost let out a laugh when Elsa almost seemed to purr from the loving touch. Anna and Elsa stayed there for a while just wrapped up in each other. Anna wanted to cry when she felt Elsa burrow her head into Anna's neck and felt her sigh in content. It was more than obvious to her that Elsa craved affection. She had obviously been starving for it for who knows for how long now. She wasn't quiet sure if the aversion to touch started with Elsa first or if it was taught and forced upon her first. All that she did know was that whenever Elsa was calm enough to actually accept touch she soaked up as much as she could. If Anna could draw it she would say that Elsa became a blanket that wrapped around her to try and snuggle up as much as she could. Anna was more than happy to fill that need for Elsa. She was going to probably over do it trying to make up for the years that Elsa had obviously missed, but she would try to judge it off of what Elsa deemed appropriate. She wasn't going to force it on her. Like she could easily see earlier was that sometimes Elsa just can't. Anna was pulled from her musings by the soft voice of the girl wrapped up in her arms.
"I like how warm you are. It's nice… like how I think sitting by the fireplace would be like."
Anna had to laugh at that. In her experience the fire could be too blistering hot and make her sweat too much.
"Well I'm glad I'm good for something."
Elsa lifted her head and leaned back enough so she could see Anna's face, "You are good for so many other things… You're more than good. All of us are lucky to be near the warmth and kindness you just exude. No one is worthy to be around it, but I do know I want to be around it as long as you'll let me, or as long as I know I'm not going to disrupt your goodness."
Anna almost started crying. No one had ever said anything so… kind about her and actually mean it. It was more than plain that Elsa more than believed what she just said. It swirled in her eyes for Anna to see. She hid her face in Elsa's shoulder to hide her reddening face.
"Thanks Elsie. I always want you around. I'm lucky to have you too. You don't see how amazing you are. People are lucky just to know or even breath the same air as you. I know you don't believe me, but I promise someday I'm gonna make you see it."
Elsa just nodded her head. She didn't really believe it like Anna said, but she felt so warm that someone thought she was good, and not just the curse that destroyed everything she came near.
A twinge went up Elsa's back and her legs almost buckled. Anna was quick enough to keep Elsa up on her feet and panic was clearly evident on her face.
"I'm fine, just still feeling the after effects of yesterday."
Anna nodded and carefully guided Elsa back to her bed and fussed over her. Elsa almost laughed at Anna for all of her fretting as she tucked her back into her bed. She couldn't help herself from making a slight jab, "You know your face will get stuck like that if you hold it for too long." As she flashed a smile at Anna.
Anna let out a breathy laugh at Elsa's joke, but it wasn't enough to completely wipe the worry that she had over how much the incident yesterday took out of Elsa. It was obvious that it took more out of Elsa than she realized. She wondered if anyone else knew that, or if Elsa hid the fact from others not wanting them to know. Anna figured that it was the latter. What she knows of her sister she would bet a week worth of chocolate that she hid the amount these episodes took from her. He focus was pulled back to the moment with a gentle dancing of fingers brushing across her cheek. Her eyes focused back and locked on to Elsa's crystal blue ones. They were warm, kind, and over flowing with love. They reminded Anna of the warmest hugs she had ever received.
"Sunshine, I promise I'm okay. I'll be right as rain before you know it."
"Snow"
"What?"
"You mean right as snow… cause well you know your powers. Never rain with you, just beautiful snow."
Elsa laughed at Anna's logic. It didn't matter if the actual saying was right as rain… nope all that mattered were the semantics of the bizarre situation that were her powers.
"Sure sunshine. I'll be right as snow in no time."
With that Anna flopped down on the bed next to Elsa and curled up around her. Elsa couldn't help but smile at how small Anna looked. It reminded her of when they were little and Anna would sneak into her bed in the middle of the night and curl up next to her. Elsa cautiously reached out and pulled Anna in closer as she ran her fingers through Anna's loose hair. She hoped that Anna still enjoyed it as much as she did when she was little. She assumed so with Anna burrowing in closer and her hands gripping onto Elsa's dress. Elsa almost wished she could freeze and stay in this moment with Anna forever. They were both safe, warm, and her powers were too exhausted to cause Anna any harm at the moment. She had complete control over them at the moment so she could hold her baby sister with almost no fear of hurting her. Sure her body ached all over, but it was more than worth the pay off. Elsa got this. She got Anna right here with her, back in their old room together curled up like the past few years never happened. For now Elsa could pretend. She could pretend she never hurt Anna, that her powers never existed, that she wasn't a disappointment to her parents, the kingdom… That she was the proper big sister to Anna. That this was how it always was, and everything else was nothing but a terrible nightmare.
Sorry about the late update, and shorter chapter than normal. I will try and see if I can post more frequently and hopefully longer chapters as well. Otherwise I hope everyone is doing well and that you are enjoying the story so far. Thanks for reading and all of your comments.
