Years before the guest arrived, during the great war.
Somewhere in Vale's massive trench defenses, a lone Vale soldier slowly braves the fortification with Grimm, and antifertility shell's raining down. He soon came across two vale soldiers, firing off their rifles at an incoming Vale platoon. As one Atlas Soldier was reloading, the vale soldier grabbed him by the back of his shirt collar and tossed him to the ground. All while slitting his neck. Hearing this the other soldier quickly spots the vale soldier and drops his rifle. He was going for his side pistol, but the vale soldier drew his quicker. He shot the Atlas Soldier dead, double tapping for good measure before continuing on down the trench. As he moved through, he came upon a locked Atlas box. Believing it to be intel he used his trench knife to break the lock off. What he found inside stopped him dead in his track. Any expert can tell you that war is expensive, so when an invading army discovers a certain element that many died for then it's no surprise why these soldiers were guarding this trench so fiercely. The Vale soldier, was looking at 18 bricks of pure gold. Greed set into his eyes as he held a brick of gold in hand. He was so focus on it that he didn't hear his comrades coming up from the side.
"We gotta move Lieutenant! The Atties are about to light up this land with 24 pounds of holy dust fire!" A cougar fauna shouted as he raced down the line. Despite the immediate threat the soldier didn't respond. He continued to stare on at the gold.
"Hey. L.T! Didn't you hear me! Damn Atties are going to scorched earth this trench!" Another soldier shouted as he raced up the line.
"Good… we could use that." The L.T finally answered without looking away from the gold.
"What are you on about!" The Faunas soldier asked before spotting the gold in his L.T's hand.
"I think… this war… it's over for us." The L.T said before reaching into his coat and ripping the dog tag from his neck.
The view cut's to the estate, six months later. The war had just ended a month prior and as far as the world knows. The three soldiers living inside were dead. They were lying low waiting for the opportune time to return back into civilian life with their stock pile of gold. For the most part the wait while boring was a breeze for these soldiers. Except for the Lieutenant. He became obsessed with the gold. At first he would count the gold bar's in the chest once a day, now it's by the hour. He started to become paranoid that someone was stealing the gold. One night as the men got drunk off of some stolen Atlas Beer's, the Lieutenant begin his obsessed muttering.
"Someone is stealing the gold." The Lieutenant remarks.
"Uh huh. Sure." The cougar soldier remarks as he hands the other soldier a beer.
"There's a bar missing, I know it." The Lieutenant continued on.
"I counted them this morning. I counted them at lunch. Hell I just got back from counting them because you don't stop. There all there. Not a single one of those bar's went missing." The cougar soldier replies as he rolled his eyes.
"No, there's one missing I can just feel it!" The Lieutenant snapped aggressively. "Someone has stolen it. I am absolutely sure of it!"
"Really. Who took it then? Nobody lives around here for miles and even then, nobody knows about it or who's been hiding here but us." The cougar spat back.
The two went into an intense stare before the Lieutenant breaks off from it and looks down in frustration. As the Cougar soldier goes to take a long swig from his beer, those words echoed in the Lieutenant's head before he goes down and removes his pistol.
"Your right… the only people who knows about it are right here." The Lieutenant said with a mad look in his eyes as he cocks his gun.
The two other soldiers realizing this froze in fear where they stood. Trying to make a plea for his friends' sanity the Cougar soldier spoke softly. "We're your friends, Colin… don't do it."
"… Yeah… that's right. We're friends." The Lieutenant said with a smile… before turning his gun on the two and killing them both. After killing his friends his sanity broke through and realizing what he has done begin to chuckle madly as the view pulls down. Transitioning to the lounge room.
Moment's after Blake had returned from upstairs. 5 hours till sunrise.
"Tell them the truth! You killed them, it was you who's in league with the evil!" Blake shouted as she held the glass shard to Nora's throat.
Blake had final snapped. Challenge after challenge she has seen too many of her friends die. All while a betrayer was within the group. Seeing the death of Penny and the irrefutable evidence that she was the one who voted for her, she couldn't handle it. As she is trying to force a confession from the rest of the group tried to stop her from doing something dumb.
"Blake, what are you doing!" Jaune cried out as he tried to stop her. However a mad look in her eye stopped her from approaching.
"In the names. There is one for sun, one for Jaune, Ruby, and me, and two for Penny. Meaning that someone had voted twice for her. Penny's death is on someone else's hand. And before she died, she told me something of great interest. So, admit it or I will!" Blake explained as she held the broken glass to Nora's throat.
"Blake stop it! You are trying to force a confession out of her!" Sun argued.
"She killed Weiss, Sun." Blake snapped causing everyone to stammer.
"Wait, what!" The group shouted in unison.
"Penny told me before she drank poison, that she saw Nora write Weiss's name in, and now that I looked at the list it seems you voted for her in hopes of hiding the evidence!" Blake explained before reinforcing her hold of the shard of glass to Nora's neck. "Now, confess to it or I swear by the gods…
"Blake stop this. This isn't helping anyone!" Ruby finally shouted out.
"Yeah! No way Nora would have put either of there names in." Jaune said agreeing.
"Like you wouldn't put my name in?" Sun asked rhetorically.
"You know what Sun…" Before Jaune could finish Nora finally spatted something out.
"I… It's true… I voted for Weiss last match." Nora finally confessed. With her head held down in shame.
"N… Nora… how… how could you?!" Jaune stuttered with wide eyes of shock before becoming enraged.
"She… she killed Renny. She must have been the one to vote for her. So, I voted for her." Nora explains with her head held down in shame. She then lifted her head up and proclaim her innocence. "But, I didn't vote for Penny last match. I voted for myself!"
"Like hell you did. The numbers don't add up!" Blake denounced as she held the glass knife to her throat.
"I swear I didn't vote for her!" Nora shouted in her defense.
"Uh huh, sure you did!" Jaune shouted out as he had half a mind to help Blake. However before this could drag on Ruby stepped up.
"Guy's that's enough!" Ruby shouted as she moved on over to Nora and pushed Blake off of her. "If we sit around arguing over this then nobody is getting out. We only have a few hours to sunrise and unless we get rid of the next owner then we will all die here."
Blake and Jaune then turned to each other before a crooked idea came into their heads. Why kill her now. Rather they should just vote for her. So turning to Ruby, Jaune replies. "Alight. Your right. Let's get on with the next challenge. We'll settle this then."
"Wait… guy's that's not what I was trying to say." Ruby tried to plead with her two friends. However, that fell on deaf ears. The two were now fixated on Nora paying for what she did.
Nora however just remained where she was one the ground. The guilt had overtaken her and she could barely hold back her tears. Just then she was offered a hand from none other than Sun. He was obvious angered by Nora's decision but he could understand why she did it. Same reason why Jaune was voting for him. Nora was hesitant but took his hand. The two comfort Nora as Jaune and Blake went to work locating the new owner.
Blake had retrieved the journal and got to work reading about the next owner. She turned to the page after the mermaid to find a bio with a sketch of the great war beside it. "His name is Colin Wentworth. A Lieutenant in the great war. His love for his friends and comrades however is only trumped by his love of gold. Seeing that the house has trapped him here with no bonds. He is free to leave the estate of his choosing but refuses to leave without the stash of Atlas Gold he has recovered. Colin would normally move the crate of gold daily, but always kept one hidden in the Library. It's locked behind a set of riddles that he wrote in his notebook that's somewhere in the house."
"Riddles? Seriously? Ugh I hate riddles." Sun remarks
"I'm actually pretty good at them. Should be pretty easy." Jaune counter.
"Then let's find them." Blake states as she tosses the book down and went searching for the notebook with Jaune quickly following behind.
While Ruby hated the reason why they were so eager she knew the importance of looking for it. The group began searching for the notebook, however finding it proved to be a challenge. For thirty minutes nobody could locate the notebook. As they were looking for it, the Butler somehow managed to retrieve Blake and Ruby's clothes, even went as far to Iron them out for them. With their clothes back Jaune and Sun got there shirts back as well. The four put on their clothes and went back to looking. Eventually Sun decided to check out the office, feeling like that it should be there and notice a black notebook by a type writer.
"Hey guys I found it!" Sun called out as he quickly scans through it to make sure it was the right thing. Sure enough it had three riddles inside.
He heads to the library where the rest met up. They did a quick scan of the library to which Jaune found the safe where the gold was hidden. He brought it onto the round table and Sun read the first riddle, "It can be dropped from the tallest of building and survive, but drop it from the smallest ship and it won't."
"… Is it feather?" Blake asked.
"Maybe…oh wait it's Paper!" Jaune said as he snapped his finger. "It can survive falling from a building but once it falls off a ship into water it will dissolve."
"Alright, P-A-P-E-R, five letters. What's the next riddle?" Nora asked as she inserted the number five at the top.
"What is so delicate that even mentioning it breaks it?" Sun read aloud.
This proved to be a difficult one. The group thought about it quietly for a few moments before Ruby suggested. "Is it… Silence?"
"… Yes! That's got to be it, breaking the silence." Jaune congratulate as Nora counted the letters coming to a seven.
"If you give me food I live, if you give me water I die." Sun read the last riddle outload. This one proved to be the most difficult. After a few moment's Nora came up with an answer.
"Is it… Fire?" Nora asked.
"No." Jaune said before rethinking. "Well… maybe, Sun place it in."
"5-7-4" Sun remarks as he inserted sure enough the lock came undone. With that the group gave a cry of celebration as Sun ripped the lock off and open the lock box to find a golden bar inside.
"Well I'll be." Jaune remarks with a greedy smile. He reaches down but was slapped by Ruby.
"Hey ouch Ruby, I was kidding." Jaune remarks as Ruby grabs the gold block.
"Don't we already are mistrusting each other as is." Ruby scolded before noticing a note on the bottom. Blake picks this up and unfolds it. Reading it aloud.
"Dad, I'm sorry that you are reading this but know I am alive and well. I have faked my death to help some of the men who have experienced shell shock and were marked as traitors. I've been so consumed with helping them that it's almost feels like I haven't left the attic home we've been hiding in. I will send you this note once I'm sure we can return home. You son, Colin." Blake read aloud.
"So he's on the third floor?" Nora asked.
"Apparently" Sun said as he stands up and marches up the stairs.
The group followed him up the stairs to the third floor. Blake being last one going up. She recalled the room where she left poor Penny. Even if nobody had died, she hesitant because of the creepy dolls within. However those thoughts were put aside when she reached the top floor… only to see a gun pointed at them. When the group came up, they were greeted by the former owner who had left his hiding hole… and now as pointing his side gun at them.
"Who the hell are you! Atlas Spy's!? Mistrial Scouts!? The IRS!" The Lieutenant demanded to know.
"No were not any of those honest!" Ruby shouted as she held up her hand. However upon doing that the Lieutenant notices the brick of gold in her hand.
"Where did you get that!" He demanded while pointing at the golden brick.
"We found it downstairs." Jaune said as he quickly got in front of Ruby.
"Y'all be trying to steal my gold!?" The Lieutenant questioned as he points the gun in Ruby's general direction.
"What! No, no. We just want you out of the house!" Nora called out as she got in front of Jaune.
"Then give me back my gold!" The Lieutenant demanded.
"Ok, ok." Ruby said as she moved out from the two and handed the Lieutenant his gold back. "Now can you leave?"
The Lieutenant didn't respond right away. Rather he continued to look down at the gold in his hand. After a few moments his eyes begin to twitch in a peculiar manner. Looking up at the group he spoke to them as if he was having a conversation with different people. "You want me to leave… right?"
"As quickly as you can soldier boy." Sun answers.
"Then you'll need to help me get the rest of my gold back from those dirty Atties." The Lieutenant said as he holsters his pistol.
"I'm sorry, what?" Blake asked.
"My gold. It's out there. Best we get a move on privates. This shelter won't last if we are shelled to death." The Lieutenant said as he quickly grabbed his jacket, ruff-sack, and rifle. "We ain't got time to come up with a plan. So follow me and hope they are terrible shots."
He then quickly raced down the stairs with everyone looking at each other in confusion. They had no idea what was going on with him but at this point they needed him out so they followed. What they didn't know what that the house had shifted. They exited the house only to see that someone had dug up trenches and sandbags laid everywhere. As they all exited the house, they were suddenly bombarded by gun fire and artillery shelling. The group quickly dived to the ground as the Lieutenant fired his rifle off into the woods.
"What the hell is going on!" Jaune shouted out as bullets flew overhead.
"Dude, that's your first question? How about since when did this become a battlefield!" Sun quipped back.
After a few moments the gun fire slowly died down and they could safely get up. As they do the Lieutenant shouted off to one of them. "Hey, someone get on the radio! We need to inform our C.O our position!"
Nora being the closest she quickly went for the radio. Quickly speaking into the microphone, she called out, "Hello! Hello, is anyone there!"
After a few moments of static another voice came on in from the other side. "Where the hell have you been soldier! We're getting killed out here!"
The voice on the other side was so loud that practically everyone can hear him. They all turn to each other wondering what to do when the voice came back shouting orders. "Now listen up and listen well. There's a small rotunda in the south side of the estate, inside are top secret documents we need badly. However, it's guard by a vicious sniper with a wicked eye. He is taking pot shots at anything that moves. If I were in your boots, I'd circle round the far side of the estate and frag that dirty Attie with a grenade through the window."
"A grenade?" Nora asked with wide eyes.
"Yes, a grenade. Are you deaf or have you lost your hearing maggot!" The CO on the other side snapped.
"What no, I just don't have a grenade!" Nora replies back. To be honest she wishes she had a grenade. Preferable her beloved war hammer Magnhild. She would use it to blow the entirety of the house to smithereens.
"Well go find one soldier! Your orders are inside that case so get going, and good luck dirtbag." The voice shouted back before the call came to an end. Nora was fine with lobbing a grenade at someone, least she will be in her element. The rest of the group, well even with their aura's they still be riddled with holes. The exhaustion of running around and solving clues all night long has drain them of any ability to put up a decent fight.
"Well, you heard him. Let's get going!" The Lieutenant said as he takes the lead down into the yard.
The group followed closely. The moment they went into the ditch they were sudden bombarded with gun shot's and artillery blast. They quickly begin to panic as they tried to avoid shrapnel and falling clumps of dirt's. Eventually they had to leave the safety of the trench and out into the opening. Just as they did, sniper fires nearly got them as they make a break for a shrubbery patch. Once there the Lieutenant pulls a grenade from his ruff pack and points to the rotunda.
"See that building. I want you to take this here grenade and make a Bee-line to it." The Lieutenant said as he points to the open window were an Atlas solider was using to try and pick off the guest. As the group tried to spot him, the Lieutenant put the grenade into Jaunes hand. "Once you're in range toss this grenade through it. Remember you have ten seconds before the thing detonates."
Jaune just noticed the grenade in his hand it took him a moment to realize that he was talking to him. "Hmm? Oh, um why don't you give this to Nora. Worst case she blows herself up but she's much better with th… Click"
Before Jaune could even finish. The Lieutenant had already removed the pin from the grenade and the safety lever came flying off. He had ignited the grenade. In complete panic Jaune ran out of the bushes screaming like a madman with grenade in hand. All while that Atlas sniper tried to hit him. By some dumb luck Jaune only managed to be grazed across the cheek as he tossed the grenade inside. The blast sent him flying back but thankfully landing in a mostly soft, bush. The group quickly raced on over screaming out to him.
"JAUNE, JAUNE! Ruby screamed as she raced over. Just as they approached the rotunda Jaune picked himself up from the brushes.
"Ugh… I'm… ok." Jaune said as his hearing slowly returns. As he slowly picks himself up he noticed the Lieutenant walking by him to which Jaune confronted him. "What the hell man!"
"What, I knew you could do it." The Lieutenant said with a shrug.
"I doubt that, and again Nora would have been better with explosives." Jaune said with an adjugated stare.
"Regardless you did it. Now, someone grab that briefcase!" The Lieutenant said ignoring Jaune as he approach the rotunda.
Nora retrieved the briefcase annoyed that she wasn't the one who didn't get to frag the sniper. As she mutters in annoyance she hands the briefcase to Sun who overlooked it. He found that it was a metal briefcase with a combination. Looking for clues he notices a small inscription on the side. Reading it aloud for all the hear.
"Project Heatwave, Burn before reading." Sun read aloud before turning to the Lieutenant. "Hey, you have any idea what that means?"
The Lieutenant remain silent, simply he pulled out a smoke and lighter. The group then got to work trying to figure out what the combination. They carefully looked it over, then patted down the bloody remains of the Atlas Soldier. Yet nothing, it wasn't till Blake had the idea to burn the suit case did it actually work. On the sides were these black pieces of tape and while they weren't flammable the heat revealed a set of numbers. 2-7-7-2-0-0. Reading aloud the documents they uncovered what they must do next.
"Operation heatwave in process is experiment 2772, a gone mutation which will transform a common soldier into a monstrous killing machine that could rival a Death Stalker. However, the experiment subject got loose and killed the scientist. The operation was never able to recover the doctor's private records which contained valuable information. Your mission, should you choose to except it, is to enter the lab and retrieve the records." Sun read aloud, gaining much groan from the group.
"Seriously? I doubt we could fight a puppy Beowolf let alone a supper soldier." Jaune groaned.
"I hope this is a hallucination. Gods forbid what the Atlas army could have done should have succeeded in this." Blake said in horror.
"Well, least we know what to do." Ruby chimed in trying to sound positive. Sadly, she was as unconvinced as the rest were by that statement.
"Huh, lab huh? I think I know where one is at. Follow me." The Lieutenant states as he lures them to the secret shelter.
The group follows after him with better ease then they did. In fact, the closer they got to this hidden lab the farther the sounds of gun shots and artillery bombardment was heard. They eventually made it to a shall dug out shelter that was locked. Wondering how they should get in, the Lieutenant stepped up to the plate. He handed Ruby his rifle before removing his shovel and with a simple swift wedge he breaks the lock. He sent Jaune and Blake in first, however the door suddenly slammed shut and their screams can be heard alongside a monstress roar. Inside the little bunker, one of those super freaks was still active. Chained to the corner, and waiting patiently for its next victim to walk on in. It stood nearly six and half foot tall, mussels so large it could barely be contained by its skin, and it's eyes. They were pure white. Only thing keeping it from ripping Jaune and Blake to shreds was a tight chain around his neck. Yet due to it's current positioning the two were effectively trapped inside with no way out.
"Jaune, (*Loud Screaming) Blake!" Ruby screams in.
"Guy's are (*Loud Screaming) you alright!" Sun joined in.
"There's (*Louder Screaming) a freak (*Louder Screaming) of nature inside!" Blake finally called out.
"Can you (*Louder Screaming) do anything (*Loudest Screaming) about it! We're locked out here!" Nora shouted in.
"Um, we'll (*Loudest Screaming) see what we can do… (*Loudest Screaming… SLAP) and Jaune stop screaming!" Blake replies before slapping Jaune quiet.
"Ow… ugh, alright." Jaune said as he rubs his cheek.
The two then went over to a makeshift lab. Quickly looking for anything to use. That's when Blake spotted a file with the same codename written on it. She quickly picked it up and searched through the multiple papers till she found instructions for a cure to that hulking rage monster aloud.
"Project Heatwave, Antidote serum. I've been developing an antidote that will reverse the effects of the rage virus. I have found a mixture of honey, sugar, and ***** I was able to manufacture a serum by mixing the three ingredients. The generals don't want the serum made in case any Vale or Vacou spies made their way inside. So as insurance I've hidden the three vials with the necessary ingredients needed to reverse the effects. They are hidden within the lab but for now it's best not to say." Blake read before quickly looking through the rest of the file. Sadly, there was nothing else on how to cure it. Meaning that they had to scour the entirety of the lab.
Outside was another story, it seems that a few of those test subjects were already out. And those monstrous roars from within, well that was their dinner bell ringing. The Lieutenant spotted the first one and got a few shot's off at one. As three bullets ripped the creature to shreds, another came out from the southside. Ruby armed with the rifle took a potshot at that one blasting it's brains out of that last one. A third one raced towards Nora and Sun when the Lieutenant tackled it to the ground. He proceeded to savagely pistol whip the creature's face in. Two more came racing out and without thinking Nora raced over to the Lieutenant and snatched one of his grenades. She pulled the pin with her teeth and tossed it at the two. Blasting them to smithereens. Meanwhile inside, the two quickly raced around looking for the vials but this proved maddeningly difficult. It took them ten minutes and three close calls with that abomination to find the first vial. It was cleverly hidden in a jar of cotton swabs. The other was in a dark goopy liquid that required pliers to retrieve. The last one was hidden on top a stack of boxes. One that required Jaune to climb up upon, only to fall down with the boxes on top. He was fine… mostly, and the two quickly applied the three vials of serum into a tin can before finding a syringe. Jaune now armed with a syringe needed a distraction to inject the serum into this behemoth.
"Hey, guy's we got a way to stop this thing! But we need a distraction!" Blake shouted out.
"Um… hold on a second!" Sun shouted out as he went around the corner and started tapping on the bar's. "Hey meathead! Come and get me you overgrown ingrate! I'm a Faunas and you are not as superior as you think!"
The creature didn't know what Sun was saying, only that he was really loud and closer. So it broke the glass trying to grab Sun. However the metal bars made it difficult to do so. As the creature struggled Jaune slowly snuck up on it, and with a quick injected the serum. The two watch as the body of the abomination begin to quickly decay into a decrepit underweight corpse. It then slumped against the wall next to a box that it seems to be guarding. It took a Blake a few moments to notice Neptune's cult symbol on the box. She points this out and the two quickly retrieve the box the and exited the building. When they exited however, they soon came upon a pile of corpses.
"Um… what happen while we were inside?" Jaune asked as he noticed the Lieutenant taking back his rifle from Ruby.
"Zombies." Sun said as he picked a piece of brain from Nora's hair.
"Ah… um, we have this crate. Think this is what we were looking for." Blake said as she and Jaune set it down. The group gathered around her, curious about what was inside.
Strangely it was a block of dried ice with a long piece of twine inside. It took the group a moment to realize that what they need was frozen in. Before anyone could think of a solution, Nora had already grabbed the Lieutenants shovel and proceeded to chip away at it till finally the ice gave way. She tugged on the twine and removed the top to reveal a hollow portion. At the end of that twine was a key and a message. Blake read the following aloud.
"It's going to be a brutal war to get the gold. The two best soldiers must be chosen to go inside the east side guest house and battle for glory. Good luck, dirtbag." Blake read aloud.
"Ugh… so I guess we're going to be voting again." Sun said in hopeless frustration.
"Yeah… guess we are." Jaune remarks as his and Blakes eye's turn to Nora. They may have worked with her but they were still royal pissed at her.
Nora can see that the two sets of eyes were on her. She continued to look down in shame. After a few moments of silence, the group quietly decided that there was no point in dragging this on. They all head towards the house, entering through the back. Inside the staff were waiting for them. They had pre set the voting hat. Ready for them all to vote. Jaune and Blake wrote Nora's name and discarded it. Ruby her own, still refusing to vote. Nora feeling the guilt of Weiss death couldn't handle it and decided to vote her own name in. Leaving Sun to vote. He took the longest pondering who he should vote for. As he looked down at the blanket covering his dead friends' body the choice came to him. He wrote the name and tossed it in. Once all names were set the Butler shook the hat and proceed to pick a name. Nora having the most was picked first. The name after much to everyone's surprise was Sun's. He had voted for himself, he remarked that it wasn't Nora's fault and even if it was, if they all voted for her it would be Ruby going into the challenge. The two realized that and felt immense guilt about putting Ruby at risk. Sun and Nora were lead outside. The gun's and artillery bombardment had come to an end, and now there will be blood.
Inside the Eastern Guest house on the far side of the state, was a table with two cases and a revolver in-between them. As the door's close behind them, a familiar voice spoke over a crudely built in broadcast system. The voice on the other line was none other C.O and he had a special set of orders for the two.
"Alright Dirtbags, listen up. Take a seat on both sides of the table and touch nothing till told to do so." The C.O demanded. The two complied sitting down at the table. "Now, what y'all going to do is play a little game I'd like to call All Out War. You've done good the field but unfortunately as of now. There will be a casualty. Now open the box's in front of you."
Both Sun and Nora do it. Upon looking inside they found a set of hand carved soldiers on pegs, dozens of white and red pegs with a gridlock system on the top and bottom of the case. The C.O then went on to explain the purpose of these things. "Make sure your enemy isn't able to see your board, and despite your constitution rights, keep your grubby fingers off the gun. We will get to it soon. Now place all five of your soldiers on different strategic positions on the grids. Seeing there's a lady in the room she will go first. Pick a spot on the grid. If there isn't a soldier on the opposite side then place a white peg on the top board and it's your opponents turn. If there is a soldier place a red peg and reach for the gun. Am I made clear dirtbags?"
Sun and Nora look up at each before giving a silent nod Nora looked down at her board before calling out a number. "F6?"
"… Miss" Sun said, he then looked at his board. Calling out, "G5?"
"Miss." Nora said. The two then went back calling different coordinates before finally coming to fifth call by Nora. "B4"
"Hit." Sun replied. Nora takes a red peg and marked it while Sun removed his. He looked up at Nora with sadden eyes. The intercom turned on and the C.O spoke.
"Right, now that you have lost the entirety of your battalion you must pay for your consequences. Pick up that revolver and point it at your head Dirtbag." The C.O ordered. Sun was hesitant but did what he was told. The C.O then gave his final order. "Now, pull the trigger."
Sun freezes in fear but after a few moments did as he was told. Nora shielded her eyes as Sun pulled the trigger. There was no sound excluding a simple click. Followed by a sigh of relief. The C.O then remarks, "This game will end when one of you has a bullet lodge between those lobes. Now, continue to go at it."
The two then did that. Calling out multiple spots and getting nowhere. Eventually Sun got lucky calling out 'H8' Nora seeing this knew what she had to do. She hesitantly picks up the gun, and points it at her head. She looked into Sun's eyes before pulling the trigger. She let's a frighten whimper as the gun made a click noise. She put's down the gun with shaking hands as she goes for her guess. Seeing Nora shaking with fright pierced Sun's soul. He was terrified about putting the bullet in his head but seeing that look of horror on her face. She then called out D8 and it was a miss. Sun called out A4 and it was a hit. Nora shakingly goes for the gun, pointing it to her head before pulling the trigger. It made another click and she nearly fainted in horror. It took her a few moments before collecting herself. She set the gun on the table and snakingly calling out G2. It was a miss, and Sun's next choice was not. H9, and Nora began to cry. She slowly moved her hand to it. Much more hesitant then before. Tears flowed down her eyes as her shaking hands slowly moved to her head. The gun pointed at her head she cocks back and takes five deep breaths before pulling the trigger. This one was thankfully a blank but the trauma inflicted upon her face detailed absolute horror. The gun falls to the table and Nora broke off into a long sob. She couldn't do it anymore, and neither could Sun. After five minutes weeping in despair, she finally found the words to guess.
"G… (Sob) 2? (Sob)" Nora asked in-between the sniffles.
Sun remained quiet, staring deeply at the board. His eyes dulled by despair, and his breath slowed to the point that one may question if he was still breathing. After a few moments he had a look. Not of hope or despair but of… clarity. He spoke silently as he looked up at Nora's tear-stained face. "Hit."
Nora pegs the spot as Sun reaches for the gun. He held it to his head as Nora quickly covered her eyes. One click of the hammer was suddenly followed by a loud BANG. Nora shrieked in horror as Sun's body collapses down onto the table. Nora's face was splattered with Sun's blood. She finally found the nerve to look. Seeing him slumped over, blood leaking out onto the ground, and the smoke emanating from the barrel of the gun… this horrific image, will forever haunt her for the rest of her life. Moments after seeing this the C.O's voice was heard over the intercom.
"Congratulations. You survived Private. The gold is under that blanket to the right. Retrieve that and get the hell on out of here." The C.O said before the voice cuts out.
Nora no longer wanting to be in this room quickly went for the gold. She was just about to leave with the chest when she noticed something. Sun's board. On it were four soldiers. None of them were hit. In fact the spot that Nora had called upon had no soldiers. Question why Nora came to the sudden and horrific realization. Sun, had gave up his life… for hers. Tears once began to flow from her eyes as she barreled out of the room with crate in hand. Outside she found the Lieutenant. Waiting for who ever to return with his gold. Spotting him she dropped the gold to the ground and shouted off at him.
"Take it! It's all there!" Nora snapped as she tossed the crate at the Lieutenants feet. He raced on over to it and open the crate to find that all his gold was there. He pulled out a single bar, greedily admiring it's beauty. As he does, Nora demanded to know. "Was this worth it!? Hmm, a good person died for that blood money. So it better have been worth it."
The Lieutenant didn't pay her much attention rather he overlooked the brick and with a greedy smile he replied. "Yes… it was worth it."
He then placed the gold back in and tossed the gold crate over his shoulder. He then walked to the exit. As he does, the scars of the war slowly begin to dissipate alongside the Lieutenant. Nora angrily watches from a distance as he finally disappeared. Once gone she walked back to the manner. Tears running down her face as she enters inside. The three turned to see who had return. Seeing Nora, face covered in blood and tears straining her eyes caused the group to go quiet. Nora didn't say anything, she just sat beside Ruby. A few seconds later she broke down crying leaning up against Ruby as tears fell from her eyes.
"I… (Sob)… hate (Sob)… This (Sob)… house (Sob)… so (Sob)… fuckin (Sob)… much (Sob)" Nora wept into Ruby's shoulder. The group remained silent but internally they were agreeing with her. This night, house has broken them beyond repair, and yet the question among them about who betrayed them to it remained unanswered.
Hello everybody Wombag1786 here… Ah man. Back to nothing? (sigh) oh well. This chapter went dark with a game of Russian roulette, ending with Sun's life. As the saying goes, Five little Soldier Boys going through a door; One stubbed his toe and then there were four. Anyways we are at the chapter 8, meaning two more chapters are left. Not to spoil much but, the next chapter will reveal who is in league with the evil. Don't suppose I can get a guess from anyone on who it is? … If you think you know who it is, then post it in the comments down bellow. If you already know who it is. Don't spoil it for the rest.
Anyways please Fav and Fol the story. (It really does help) as well as leave a comment or question down bellow. This is Wombag1786 signing off.
