Jaune and Courage the Cowardly Dog
Chap 60: Food of the Dragon
"You really do this every Sunday Jaune?" Blake asked shocked at what she was seeing.
"Yup. Apparently, it's one of Muriel's family traditions." I answered.
"And that means dressing the place up as a pirate ship?" Kali asked.
"Yup. Dressing up the house as a ship and dressing up as pirates." I answered.
"How many instruments can Courage play?" Ghira asked with wide eyes at seeing Courage effortlessly play the accordion.
"He is a dog of many talents." I answered as we watched Courage continue to play the accordion.
"Least Sun won't see me wearing this." Blake muttered under her breath.
"Why?" I asked.
"He used to say that pirates would beat ninjas in a fight." She answered annoyed.
"That's idiotic. Everyone knows that ninjas would beat pirates." I told her.
"Thank you." She exclaimed while throwing her hands into the air.
"Ahoy, me maties. Twelve bells mean it's time for grub in the galley." Muriel called out as she entered the room carrying a large tray filled with a variety of sea food.
'Yay.' Courage cheered while tossing away the accordion and taking off his costume. We then all sat down at the table we brought up from the basement.
"Lousy, stinking fish stink." Eustace complained as he got up from his chair before sitting down at the table.
"Aye, it's me first mate." Muriel said as she placed the tray on the table.
"Just cut the fancy talk and let-AAHHH!" Eustace began to argue but screamed at the end when Ghira and Kali slammed their feet against his so hard that they flattened his foot. Causing him to scream in pain. And like usual, Muriel didn't notice it.
"You might not care much, but Courage, Jaune and I are enjoying our seafood Sunday luncheon. And I'm sure our guests are as well." Muriel said as she put a bib on herself before doing the same for Courage. "Aren't we?"
'Uh-huh.' Courage answered excitedly.
"We sure are." Ghira answered.
"I am even thinking of creating something along the lines like this for us." Kali added.
"Marvelous. Now let's dig in." Muriel replied as she sat down before handing out the various foods. Blake got some salmon, Kali some squid, Ghira some herring, Courage some clams, I got some oysters. Muriel got a weird green fish while Eustace got some lobster.
"Thank you." We all said before digging into our food.
"Eustace, don't you think the seafaring atmosphere makes the food taste better?" Muriel asked before using the hook on her hand to grab the fish before biting the head off.
"Makes me wanna puke in the ocean." He answered before taking a bite out of his food. Though, my attention was the green thing just outside the window that just left.
'Did you see that?' Courage asked confused while trying to open a clam with a knife.
"Yeah." I answered as we watched the green thing move to the front of the house before disappearing.
'EEE EEE EEE EEE!' Courage screeched terrified. Only for it to turn to pain when he wasn't paying attention to the clam which caused it to fly to his nose can clamp down on it.
"Let me help." Kali said as she effortlessly got the clam off before opening it and the others for him.
'Thanks.' Courage said while massaging his now red nose.
"Courage. What's wrong?" Muriel asked worried.
'Something big outside.' He answered. Eustace and Muriel turned around but saw nothing.
"Shut up. Will ya." Eustace yelled while tossing a fish at Courage. Only to be easily caught by Ghira who glared at Eustace.
"You saw that as well?" Blake asked.
"You mean something big, green and possibly mean. Yes." I answered.
'AAAHHHHH!' Courage suddenly yelled. Looking to see what he was possibly looking at; we saw what seemed like a dragon head try to bite Eustace's head. Though, it missed as Eustace ducked down to retrieve a lobster claw the fell.
"Um. Is this normal Jaune?" Kali asked. Turning to her, we saw she was looking at Courage in worry.
"Pretty normal." I answered trying not to laugh as Courage's eyes had popped out of his head and landed in his clams which closed right after. And instead of opening them, he just put the entire clam where his eyes were. And somehow was able to open them and let out a cackle.
"WATCH OUT!" Ghira suddenly shouted while pulling Kali and Blake to the side. Looking up, we saw the dragon come back to tr and eat one of us again. Grabbing Muriel's hands, we pulled her to the side just in time as the dragon destroyed the table. Sending an oblivious Eustace to the wall.
"MMM! Good lobster." He said before taking another bite. The dragon growled before retreating back outside.
"Dragons. Not the strangest thing we've seen." I said as I stood back up before helping Muriel up as well.
"I'm not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing." Kali said worried.
"A sailor's dance. A grand idea. And you do it so well." Muriel suddenly said. Turning to her, we saw her begin to dance for some reason.
'Really.' Courage whined. Indicating that he tried to warn her only for her to miss the mark completely.
"We should probably board the place up to be safe." Ghira told us. Nodding, we were about to do so but Courage was already ahead of us. And by that, I mean he was already barricading the last window.
"Oh, I get it Courage. The ship sprung a leak and you're fixing it. Good work matey." Muriel said still dancing.
"We need to head to the-" Ghira began but was cut off when the dragon burst through the barricade.
"OOH!" Muriel gasped when a bucket landed on her head.
"FOOD!" The dragon said excitedly.
"What? Go get your own grub." Eustace said through a full mouth while hoarding all the food that was on the table.
"You shouldn't have said that." I told him as the dragon licked its lips before grabbing Eustace and swallowing him in a single bite.
'AAHHH!' Courage screamed with his eyes, ears, legs, arms, tail, tongue and nose sprung off his body like springs.
"Where did Eustace go?" Muriel asked as she took off the bucket.
"I just got ate." He shouted from inside the dragon.
"OH MY! Eustace, are you in there?" She asked.
"Of, course I'm in here. Now get me out." He answered while the dragon nodded his head.
"Food." The dragon said while looking at Muriel.
"Uh, oh." I said worried before grabbing Muriel and pulling her away just in time as the dragon tried to bite her.
"RUN!" Blake shouted as we all ran away from the dragon. Exiting the house through the back door. We all ran away from the house hoping to get away from the dragon.
'Odd.' I thought as I chanced a glance back and saw the dragon struggling to chase after us. Not in the sense that it was slow but more in the sense that it could not walk or run properly on land. As it struggled to not fall down and seemed to be trying to jump at other times.
"Up the windmill." Kali said as we neared it. Courage lifted Muriel and place it on her head before climbing up the windmill. The rest of us following suit. As soon as we were at the top, the dragon reached the windmill as well.
"What's it doing?" Kali asked confused when we saw the dragon tried to jump and wave its arms around. Only to fall back to the ground in dismay.
"I think the dragon is sad that it can't get to us." Muriel answered.
"Works for me. Don't feel like getting eaten." I added.
"Otherwise, your Fiancé will get mad." Blake chimed in.
"Wait. Your engaged?" Kali and Ghira asked shocked.
"I'll explain later. Right now. Let's focus on not getting eaten." I answered.
"I don't think that will be a problem." Blake said noticing the dragon trying again to reach us only to fail.
"I'm sorry Mr. Dragon. But we don't want to be eaten." Muriel called out to it.
"I would eat you. If I could fly. Everyone in my family is a great flyer. Why, oh why can't I fly?" The dragon asked in dismay. "If only I knew. If only I knew."
"Aw. Poor dragon." Muriel and Kali said sadly.
"Thank you. Your both very kind. Wish I didn't have to eat you but it's the way I am." The dragon said before biting on the windmill and taking out the base. Which caused us to fall to the ground.
"Ow." We all groaned in pain.
"That's it. If you eat me, I'm just going to have to stop feeling sorry for you." Muriel told the dragon.
'Please don't.' Courage begged getting in-between Muriel and the dragon.
"It's bad enough that I can't fly. Now you want me to starve." The dragon argued.
'EEE HEE.' Courage answered.
"That's not realistic. If animal fur didn't give me a rash, I'd eat you." The dragon told him.
"Well, that means we're safe." Ghira said under his breath.
'Yuck.' Courage said after licking Muriel in an attempt to dissuade the dragon.
"I don't care if she's radioactive. I've eaten worse." The dragon countered.
"What's radioactive?" Blake asked.
"Radiation. Something that, unless you are immune to, don't want to even come near. Lest you want to deal with the dangerous after affects." The dragon answered.
'Oh, no.' Courage gasped before hopping on Muriel and taking off her hair to reveal an expiration sticker.
"Expires September 8, 1894." The dragon read the expiration date. "I'm bored with these games. I'll eat her now."
"WAIT!" I shouted.
"What now?" The dragon asked irritated.
"You said that you don't know why you can't fly. How about a deal? If we find out why you can't fly, you'll leave us alone." I offered.
"That sounds good to me. You have a deal." The dragon agreed.
"And while you're at it. GET ME OUT OF HERE!" Eustace shouted from inside the dragon.
"How do you plan on doing this Jaune?" Blake asked.
"I have no idea." I answered.
Ten Minutes Later
"READY?" I shouted to the dragon. We were on the roof of the barn beginning the first test to see if we could help the dragon fly.
"Ready as I'll ever be." The dragon answered.
'Go.' Courage said while waving a racing flag around. The dragon then ran across the roof of the barn like sort of runway before jumping off the edge.
"Watch out." I said as I pulled Courage to the side in time to avoid getting sent off the edge by the dragon's tail.
'Thanks.' Courage said.
"Come on." The dragon said as it flapped its wings as fast as it could. He remained in the air for a moment before inevitably falling to the ground.
"Are you okay?" Kali asked from the bottom. Looking over the edge, we saw her tending to the dragon.
"Fine. Not the worst hit I've taken to myself or my self-esteem." The dragon answered.
"Onto the net test I suppose." I said as we headed to the ground.
Five Minutes Later
'Left ear.' Courage said as he took out a measuring instrument and took the measurements of the dragons left ear. 'Now right.'
"Do you think this will work?" Ghira asked referring to the giant fan we have next to us.
"Hopefully. Or at the very least, get us closer to the reason why." I answered as Courage wrote down something on the clipboard he had. He then walked over to us and turned the fan on.
"WHEE!" The dragon exclaimed happily as he was lifted into the air by a giant tarp holding him up. After a moment, we pulled a lever to release him so he could try without any support.
"Yes." We shouted when the dragon started to fly on his own. Only for it to turn to horror when the force behind the fan sent the dragon flying though the back of the barn and far away from us.
'Whew.' Courage sighed as he wrote something down.
"Do we even want to know?" Blake and Kali asked. Looking up, we saw them staring inside the barn through the hole the dragon created
"Probably not." I answered before Ghira and I left the barn to check on the dragon.
Ten Minutes later
"I doubt this will work." Blake said as I placed the helmet with a fan on the dragon's head.
"We won't know for sure unless we try." I countered as I got back on the ground.
'Turning it on.' Courage said as he pressed the on button on the remote. The fan started spinning quickly and after a moment, the dragon was lifted into the air and began to fly around.
"Okay I was wrong. Though, I do feel like I want one like that for myself." Blake admitted as the dragon began to cheer that he was flying.
"Whee. This is thrilling." The dragon shouted as he tried to do a trick. Only to fail as the helmet stopped working for some reason and he plummeted the ground.
"Watch out." I shouted as I pulled Courage and Blake behind a rock to take cover. Reason being that, for some reason, when the dragon landed, he created an explosion as if he was a bomb.
"On second thought. I rather not have one." Blake noted as we exited cover to go and check on the dragon. Followed by Ghira and Kali who were both alerted by the explosion.
Half an Hour Later
"This can't be good for my self-esteem. Ouch." The dragon said before wincing in pain.
"Sorry." Kali said as she finished bandaging the dragon's injuries.
"What's the good word?" Muriel asked walking up to us.
"They still can't find out why I can't fly. Gonna have to eat you. Sorry." The dragon answered before trying to eat Muriel.
'AAHHH!' Courage screamed in terror.
"RUN!" I shouted as I grabbed Muriel and pulled her away to avoid her getting eaten.
We then proceeded to run as fast as we could to get away from the flightless dragon. Eventually to the city of Nowhere where we decided to run across the roof tops to make it harder for the dragon to try and eat us. Had we been paying attention; we would have noticed that the dragon destroyed Di Lungs car. Though, we did hear him yell out in frustration which had we been in any other situation, we would have stopped and laughed at his misfortune as he definitely deserved that. After about thirty minutes, we exited Nowhere and came across a forest. Knowing we were in more danger on the ground, we grabbed some vines to swing to the top of the trees.
"Persistent. I'll give him that." Ghira said as we started to run on the top of the trees.
"WATCH OUT! WE'RE RUNNING OUT OF TREES!" Muriel warned.
"Shit!" I shouted as we stopped just in time to avoid falling off the edge. "That was close."
"Yeah. But now we got the dragon right under us." Blake countered as the dragon roared.
"The lake. If he can't fly. Maybe he can't swim." Muriel shouted in fear.
"Worth a shot." Ghira said as he grabbed Blake and Kali by the arms.
"Great. And here I was hoping to not get soaked to the bone again." Blake complained before we all jumped into the lake. And luckily, it was a good temperature and not freezing.
"But at least we are safe for the moment." I said as we watched the dragon dip its foot into the water before quickly taking it out and shivering.
"I guess dragons just don't like water." Muriel said. But as soon as she said this, a large shadow loomed over us.
'Huh?' Courage asked confused. Turning around, we were shocked to see another dragon.
"Great." Blake muttered.
"AAHHHH!" The rest of us screamed in terror. But to our shock, the dragon spoke calmly to us.
"Hey, easy guys. I'm not going to hurt you." He told us.
"You're not?" I asked confused.
"of course not. Want some fish fries? Fishsicle? Fish is so good. Fish is so good. So glad I was born a water dragon and not a one of those flying dragons that eat people." He told us.
"I didn't know there were different kinds of dragons." Muriel said shocked.
"You thinking what I'm thinking?" Blake asked in realization.
"Can I see that for a moment Mr. Dragon?" I asked while pointing to the fishsicle.
"Sure." He said as he gave me the fish. Courage and I then swam back to the dragon that was still on land.
"Here try this." I said handing him the fish.
"Don't eat fish. Only people. All flying dragons eat people. Even the ones that can't fly." He said sadly.
'Please.' Courage said in a high-pitched voice before giving a lick to the fish.
"Oh, all right. But just a bite." The dragon relented before taking a bit of the fish. "Say, this is good. Much better than people. Got any more?"
"Yes. But you have to come with us into the lake." I told him.
"Compromises. Compromises. But I must have more fish." The dragon complained before begrudgingly following us into the lake.
"How does the water feel?" I asked.
"Hmm. Water feels good." he answered before realizing something. "Hey! These aren't wings. They're fins."
"Kind of obvious now in hindsight when we really think about it." Blake said upon hearing this. Hearing a gasp, we looked to see the new dragon put on a monocle.
"William. It's you. My long-lost brother." The dragon exclaimed happily.
"Tell me brother. I'm not a flying dragon, am I?" William asked.
"No. You're a water dragon. Mom and Pop lost you during the storm. You must have been adopted by lying dragons." The new dragon answered.
"The dog and kid were right. No wonder why I always hated the tase of people. Which reminds me." The dragon said before "opening" a hatch on his stomach and releasing Eustace.
"Well, it's about time." He complained.
"Well, I think this is the perfect place to finish up our sea food Sunday." Muriel said as the new dragon handed each of us different fish-based foods which we ate happily and peacefully. That is, until we heard a dragon roar above us. Looking up, we saw a red dragon swoop down and effortlessly eat Eustace before flying away. Hearing some laughter, we turned and saw that Courage once again had his eyes in clams again. We just laughed before resuming our food.
