The next morning after I woke up, I made my way to the town center. Since I was in charge of Haven, I had to take part in showing the new arrivals around town. Because there was a new orange, I had to also explain things to her. As I walked into the center, I saw that kids had gathered and without looking too hard, I could tell the ones who were from the two camps, and who had been here a while.
The ones who arrived last night were looking around nervously at the passing people and some even looked in the shops, confused at what was going on. Justin and a young girl who was maybe nine years old were standing by the small library. Justin wasn't talking, but the girl was talking antimedialy.
As I approached, the girl stopped talking and gave me a small wave. "Good morning," I said as I approached with a smile.
"Hi," Justin answered.
"How are you doing?" I asked Justin.
"Better," Justin said and I smiled at him. "When are you doing another raid?"
"Three days from now," I answered. "It's a yellow camp, and there isn't any electricity over there. Some hope that a red is hiding amongst the yellows."
"Hope so," Justin said and he looked down at Anika.
Do you want to go talk for a minute away from all the people? I thought to the girl, she nodded and released Justin's hand. I looked up at Justin and said "Anika and I are going to talk for a little while." Justin nodded seemingly understanding. I gently led the girl away from the town center and toward the edge of town where several farms had been set up. When we got far enough away, I asked aloud ``how much do you know about your powers?"
"Read minds, that's it," She said, somewhat scared.
"Is there any limit?" I asked.
"I can hear people's thoughts within a mile of where I am standing." She explained.
"Anything else?" I asked and I felt her try to get into my mind to look through my memories. "That's not going to work." Her probing immediately stopped. "I think I can help you somewhat to see if you have anything more than telepathy. But I won't be much help, though there are three other oranges here, so I'll talk to them and see what's the best plan to help you."
She waited for a second before asking, "do you wish you were another color?"
Taken by surprise, I waited a second before answering. "Some times," I answered honestly. "I sometimes wish I was a blue, it seems interesting."
"True," Anika said, with a smile in her tone.
"How many oranges are out there?" She asked and I was surprised by the shift in the conversation. "I want to know."
"Not many," I said truthfully. "The ones who were outed in the camps are dead, the ones who survived are on the run, or hiding deep in the camps like you and I."
"When did the killings start?" she asked.
"Four years ago," I said.
I hate humans. She thought.
I hate the ones who want to hurt us. I thought and Anika gave me a weird look. I was on a ranch for a while, in hiding. Some of the neighbors knew that I was there. They didn't betray me, whenever the skiptracers came rolling around they warned me. One day, someone made a mistake and led a skip-tracer right to me. I got captured and I was taken to Pheonix.
"What was the purpose of that story?" She asked and I smiled at her.
Humans made mistakes, especially with us, but not all of them. My neighbors risked life and limb to protect me. I don't hate them, and you shouldn't hate every single person, because they didn't do the same crimes that others have. I explained and she nodded.
"Excuse me," Phil said from somewhere behind me, and we swung around to face him. "Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you."
"It's fine," I said. "What's up?"
"Why are you guys just sitting out here not talking?" He asked curiously, avooiding the question for Anika's sake.
"I'm an orange." She explained. "Kylie is helping me practice my powers."
"What can you do?" Phil asked curiously.
"Telepathy." She said a little scared of his reaction.
"That's cool," Phil said and he looked at his watch. "Don't you have to start orientation, Anika?" I looked at my watch and agreed with him.
"I'll see you after you start orientation today," I told Anika, she nodded and walked away from us.
"Is she okay?" Phil asked, looking at where the girl disappeared.
"No," I said with a heavy sigh. "I just had to explain to a ten-year-old that her entire race of people were massacred a few years ago for no reason other than fear and hatred. And a few breaths later I tried to explain why we should like some humans."
"That's hard." He said, sadly.
"Yeah. What did you want to talk about?" I asked.
"We were supposed to have a meeting about that yellow camp this morning,," Phil said and I looked at him surprised.
"I totally forgot," I said, slapping myself on the head.
"It's fine," Phil answered and I noticed something strange about his behavior.
"What's going on?" I asked, and he slightly deflated.
"Found out that Karl and Mary's granddaughter is at Thermound, she's a green," Phil said and I sighed.
"They want to go after her?" I asked and he nodded. "We can't change our schedule because of one girl."
"I know," Phil said, "they've been in a depressed mood ever since they found out."
"I guess so," I answered and I thought of something. "Has anyone heard from O'Neal in the last few days?"
"I don't think so, why?" Phil asked.
"I think we need to check on her, that's all," I answered and he nodded in response. "After the meeting, you check on O'Neal and I'll check on Karl and Mary?"
"Fine," he answred.
The meeting took almost two hours to complete, and though I didn't want to, I had Helga take me to Karl and Mary's house so I could talk to them, as I stayed by the door for too long. Helga asked "do you want to come in with you?"
"No, I'm good," I answered and she nodded. She only disappeared when I walked inside. As I walked into the house, I saw Karl and Mary sitting at the dining table. "How are you guys doing?" I asked kindly as I walked into the dining room.
"Better dear." Mary said, "how is Haven doing?"
"Haven is doing really well." I said, "You should come and see how it's growing."
"We want to go and get Ruby, we want her to be safe here," Karl said sadly.
"I know, but we can't," I answered, "too many people are focused on Thurmond, and not on the other camps. So we need to focus on them for right now." Karl sighed and shook his head.
"I want to get her out," Karl said and Mary sent me a sympathetic look.
"I know you do," I answered, and I gave them a sad smile. "But we will get Ruby, okay?" They nodded and I stood up. As I walked back out of the dining room, I saw that Helga had come into the house. "I need you to find some blues and yellows to guard them."
"Why?" Helga asked and I looked at them before looking at my friend again.
"Look, you and I both know that they care about their granddaughter very much," I said and she nodded. "What do you think they are willing to trade to get her out of Thurmond?"
"You don't think that they will give us up?" Helga asked, surprised.
"If I was in their position, I would do anything to get Ruby out of there," I answered, and she sighed.
"Fine," Helga said and she grabbed my arm. We disappeared and we reappeared in front of Haven Town Hall. "I'll find some kids."
"Thank you," I answered and she nodded before she disappeared again.
