I was working on the next shrink chapter when I realized i needed to do this scene first. It's short, sweet, and simple. Kinda compares to a Bird's Comfort. Enjoy!
Dick - 17 Tim - 9 Damian - 3
Bad Dreams Need Good Hugs
It was the second night after Dick and Dad came back from California, but Tim could not manage to get a restful night sleep. He thought he was used to it by now, the worry filled nightmares. He had them the entire time Dick was missing, and then again when Dad sent them back to Gotham without them. Often he would wake up in a cold sweat, crying at what he saw.
Sometimes it was a man and woman falling to their deaths.
More often it was a man lying in a pool of blood, sometimes two men.
The faces changed from strangers to people he knew. People he cared about. For a long time, it was Dick on the floor bleeding out. Whenever Dad was away though, it was always him.
Why he had the nightmares though when they were finally home worried the boy a great deal. It wasn't like he could talk to people about them. It didn't stop the dreams from coming, and he suspected they never would stop. The time he did talk about his reoccurring nightmares was when he learned they were real, suppressed, memories from when he was little. Alfred explained both dreams when he was six, and he didn't like it. There wasn't really anyway to get rid of them. Only endure.
Didn't mean he couldn't sneak out of his room and get reassurance they were just dreams when they happened though.
Slipping out from under his covers for the second time that week, Tim silently left his room in search of one of their recently returned members. The previous night the entire family somehow ended up in their dad's bed. Alfred insisted they try to sleep in their own beds that night to get reacclimated.
Well he tried. The boy just needed more reassurance, that's all. And Dick was never one to say no to company.
The genius stopped just short of opening the door when he realized it was still open a crack. Someone else was already there. Judging by the door being open still, it could only mean one of two things: Dad or Alfred was checking in on him and would soon be out, or Damian snuck out of the nursery to join their brother that night. Slipping inside, he got his answer. He wasn't the only one who had a nightmare.
Carefully the boy shut the door behind him and approached the bed, watching Dick's face. Damian was cuddled up against his right side, sound asleep and clutching batkitty. The teen's eyes opened when Tim came close, glaring for a moment as if he were an enemy, but he blinked once and his face softened when he recognized his brother. They saw him do this before in California and back then it scared them, but after a bit they understood it was a reflex. It'd take a while for him not to be on guard while he was sleeping.
Tim bit his bottom lip, his eyes begging and questioning. Dick saw it, smiled kindly, then jerked his head towards his other side. Seeing the all clear, the kid smiled in relief and ran around to the bed's other side, climbing in and under the sheets quickly. The teen rolled onto his back and wrapped his free arm around the bed's new occupant. Tim snuggled up to him as much as he could without causing pain, one arm draped around his big brother and Mystery Dog while the other was pinned beneath him. Wasn't the most comfortable, but he rarely felt safer.
His eyes drifted closed just as he felt a light kiss on his head. They didn't need to say a single word to each other to make it clear what they were thinking. They knew what the other dreamed about. Nightmared about? They weren't really good dreams, and they knew it. They needed to know those they cared about were safe, and no matter what they were scared of, they were always loved.
A smile grew on the boy's face, one he felt he shared with the other two in the bed. They were finally going to get a good night's sleep.
A/N: I've been wanting to draw a picture of these three sleeping together, but drawing people sleeping is pretty hard! I have one with Jason instead of Tim up on DA, but it's not exactly the same. Oh well. Either way, the robins sleeping together is absolutely adorable. and after everything Dick's gone through, plus the others who waited in terror, they could all use the extra comfort. Unfortunately, sneaking into Dick's bedroom may become a habit for one or two people... =/
Oh, a few of you may be thinking "It's the 100th chapter! YAY! Congrats!". Let me correct you really quickly. It's not. The timeline and the rules aren't really chapters and I don't see them as such. They're references. Being such, you have two more before we have the real 100th chapter. I plan on making 99 the next shrink chapter (in progress) and the 100th will have a treat for you! You can guess waht's gonna happen in #100. So hold it on the applause until then. I really hope you like what I have planned. Honestly, until someone reminded me, I didn't even realize we were that high. ^^; oh well. Til next time! ^^V
