What came before… (a quick recap)

With the Borg drones beginning to swarm on them, the heroes and villains had to stop fighting each other and join together in order to survive. They have built a wall to fight from, but the Borg managed to breach it on the villains' side.

Disgruntled, Skywarp sat down so that the Constructicon Hook could begin work on repairing some of the damages he had sustained when he crashed due to the Borg shooting off one of his wings.

"I can't believe you all just left me to be salvaged by those cyborg monstrosities."

"We were all fighting for our very existences," offered the Decepticon known as Rumble, another of the Decepticons that Hook had done some recent repair work on. "Besides, I doubt anyone saw you crash."

"This might hurt for a few seconds," Hook warned, as he began his work.

"I was here first!" growled Bonecrusher. "You should finish working on me!"

A series of sparks came from where Hook was working on Skywarp. Skywarp tried to jump up, but the smaller Decepticon Rumble pushed him back. "Take it easy, big guy. He's just starting."

"But he hasn't finished with me!"

"Relax. You don't see Frenzy complaining, and he's been busted longer than you. Course, we all thought he was destroyed, but instead Soundwave hid him until he could be repaired. But, still, he's being patient." Hook said, diplomatically. "I've done all the major work I can on you here under these conditions. Other than some minor work, there isn't much else I can do here and now. But I will check you over again right after I am finished with Skywarp."

Bonecrusher grumbled but decided to storm off and test his current stats before he engaged in anymore battles or whining.

"They almost got me, too," muttered Skywarp.

"Will you let it go already?" Rumble complained. "We've all taken some heavy hits today."

Skywarp glanced around noting that the others were standing at the edge of the plateau watching the battles being fought in the distance. Soundwave and another Decepticon stood side by side as they monitored activities, while the canine Decepticon Ravage paced in front of them.

"Sooo… do you think that is really Megatron in Starscream's body or has Starscream just ruptured a power coupling to his central processor?"

"Hey!" Rumble said in a quieter hushed tone. "Do you really want to become scrap today? Okay, I'll give you the fact that Starscream always seemed more overly excited than his circuits could handle. But if you look at his face now, nobody but Megatron can scowl like that."

Hook didn't feel comfortable talking behind Megatron's back, especially when he knew that Soundwave could very well be recording this very conversation to play back to Megatron later. "Rumble, tell Mixmaster that I'll need more of his #7 patching compound right away. I know he'd rather make the #11 compound, but we need something that will harden quicker if we are expected to fight again soon."

"I'm on it!" said the smaller robot, hurrying over to where he last saw Mixmaster and Scavenger.

Dirge and Ramjet stood away from the others. They had been on a scouting mission before the big battle where so many Decepticons had been destroyed or captured by the Borg. They had been unable to return due to being caught in a gravity trap by an entity calling itself the Zarn. The Zarn was attempting to wipe their memories and planned to use them as some type of engine to escape this patch of reality. It was with great difficulty that they managed to get away. They returned to where the others were only to see Starscream leading them away.

Megatron regarded the battle against the giant Borg drone made from Giganta and many components from the giant robot Mr. Atom. The large drone seemed to have fought very well against all its adversaries so far so he looked for any weaknesses he might exploit later if he had to defeat it. The fact that it had survived an encounter with the Constructicons in their Devestator persona was quite remarkable, even more so for the fact that it had also been fighting another giant robot at the same time. Long Haul had described the other robot as five multi-colored lion shaped battle ships that could come together to make a large humanoid shape that was somehow controlled by five Humans within it. Another more recent attacker was that of an enormous ape. But Hook went on to explain that he alleged that the giant ape was somehow being controlled by a small female Human that he carried in one of his hands, the very thought of which Megatron found hard to believe. Yet, incredibly enough, there were two more giant attackers that seemed to rise up and face the giant drone. One was a giant Human male, and the other was constantly changing form, yet a third of him was always a Human or animal, a third vegetable, and a third some type of mineral. It was Rumble who had pointed out that the giant man and the Animal-Vegetable-Mineral Man had both been trying to kill each other just a few minutes prior to them joining forces. Now that the Borg were attacking in larger numbers it had only been inevitable that both sides would have to join forces in order to survive.

On the other side of the valley, the smaller heroes and villains were also fighting together against the Borg. He had been surprised at how long they were fairing against the cybernetic attackers, but after a while he realized that some of the heroes and villains had powers he had never conceived of before, and that and that alone was helping them survive.

On top of the next hill, Megatron watched as the space dragon Zok fired beams from its eyes at some of the drones below, each time with less and less effect. While the dragon had evidently learned to adjust the frequency of its energy beams in order to keep them effective, the beast was beginning to run out of juice. Megatron had only been in Starscream's body for little while when he had come under attack by the space dragon, who thought he was reinitiating his fight with Starscream. Megatron, even in Starscream's body, turned out to be made of sterner stuff, and left the dragon with a damaged wing on the other hill where the Borg would come for it. The Decepticon leader had even ordered Scrapper and Blitzwing to keep an eye on the dragon so that the beast would not be able to fly away. Trapped, Zok would have to fight for his life, taking many drones with it.

"Tell me, Soundwave, what does-"

"The TARDIS is returning," announced Soundwave.

"Where?" Megatron demanded, no longer interested in what he was going to ask. Vengeance was at hand.

"Among the Borg resistors." The Decepticon pointed down to where the main group of heroes and villains were. A growl rose from Ravage, as well as from Megatron

Megatron fumed. "Very well then. Let's see what the self-proclaimed Master does once he sticks his neck outside his transport."

Black Adam snarled in frustration after bouncing off the giant drone's protective force field yet again. No matter how many times he tried, he never seemed able to breach the force field. While there were over a thousand drones attack them, the giant drone was drawing many of their strongest fighters, leaving the rest of their forces -the weaker and more susceptible- to being overrun by the Borg. If they were going to have a chance to succeed, the Giganta/Mr. Atom drone was going to have to be dismantled. And since the Mr. Atom robot half of the drone came from his parallel universe, he knew it to be not only formidable, but potentially explosive. If the Borg had not removed that aspect of the robot's capabilities, this could very well be a very short battle for all of them.

He had to dodge aside as Bizarro came hurtling past him laughing as he crashed yet again. Taking a moment to just float in midair and reflect on how pathetically worthless most of his comrades were, a shot from one of the drones on the ground stuck him in the face, sending him spinning to the ground below.

A moment later, he pulled himself out of the ground, spitting dirt. "By the sweltering sands of -"

Two super-strong entwined combatants fell over the indignant superhuman Egyptian, knocking his face into the ground yet again. Outraged, he swung blindly, knocking both fighters off of him. "Who dares-"

One of the figures, Baron Blitzkrieg, who was covered from head to toe with yellow armor that was missing in places, was grabbed from behind by his opponent, and then pushed at super-speed straight into Black Adam.

Black Adam was ready for the encounter this time. Focusing his mystical might, he became near to an immovable object. Baron Blitzkrieg crunched between them, gasping in pain as his eyes seemed to almost pop through the eye slots of his metal face mask. Then using his super-speed to step aside, Black Adam reached out to grab a hold of the Borg assailant as he and the baron flew past, letting Baron Blitzkrieg to continue on until he crashed onto the ground like a place crash.

The former champion of Shazam accessed the flowchart that Hector Hammond had put together and telepathically given them so that everyone could have an idea of who was who and what they were capable. Seeing that the man struggling in his arms was listed only as Ralph Hinkley, Black Adam assumed that the information was incomplete since it did not include his alter ego name, and that some other more vital information would likely be missing, too. But then again, Hector Hammond, didn't use an alias either.

Holding Ralph in a full-Nelson, he noted that the controlled hero was only in the 1st Stages of being a drone. While the Borg nanites could obviously be seen on his face and hands, no other augmentation had been employed on him. The Borg were obviously trying to crush all resistance before processing all of their newly acquired drones. Though how they were able to infect a person that seemed pretty near invulnerable raised other concerns. If they were able to infect and take over Ralph, could they also overwhelm him?

Movement on his left alerted him, and he turned so that Ralph could take the blow from two brawlers. The large Mantis-like alien Zorak had thrown the fully processed drone of the Mad Hatter into Ralph. The Mad Hatter fell down hard to the ground due to the impact. Zorak took advantage of the situation, and used one his upper limbs to thrust it through the Mad Hatter's head, effectively killing him. Zorak looked up at Black Adam, who was still holding the struggling Ralph Hinkley, with something that might have been a smile. "Their body shields let their own kind through."

Black Adam's eyes widened as he realized what the alien insect was saying. Then he used that information. With his powers of flight and super-speed, he pulled Ralph up with him as he circled around the giant combatants looking for an opening. Then, after the Giganta/Mr. Atom drone, managed to blast Giant-Man and the large ape back, Black Adam poured on the super-speed before Ralph could free himself. At the last possible moment, Black Adam pushed Ralph forward. Ralph's inertia propelled him through the left side of Giganta's skull and he ruptured out through the metal half of Mr. Atom's head. The massive drone teetered for a moment before finally crashing backward dead.

Black Adam grinned evilly as he swooped down and grabbed the dazed gore-covered Ralph drone, and quickly brought him over into the protective wards made by Wotan, to keep Ralph free from any further influence from the Borg Collective while Wotan and his fellow mad scientists removed the nano-probes controlling him. Seeing his sometime ally Dr. Sivana working on reclaiming some of the drones, Black Adam threw Ralph down hard onto the ground right behind the mad scientist causing him to jump in fear and surprise; Black Adam couldn't help but to laugh.

Sivana swatted away the helping hands of his son, Sivana Jr, and then shouted up at the super powered Egyptian. "Hold off sending anymore drones to reclaim. We're swamped with more than we can handle already."

Flying back out into the field of battle, the dark marvel groaned in annoyance to see one of the Borg controlled Horde Troopers administering nanoprobes to the battered form of Baron Blitzkrieg. Knowing that his options we limited, he made a decision. Black Adam swooped down fast, landing with his feet thereby crushing the super powered Nazi's skull before he could become a more difficult threat to handle. Then, he turned and swatted the Horde Trooper away before it could turn on him. The Horde Trooper, not a fully processed drone, crumpled like an aluminum can and then crashed into an older Human female drone.

Black Adam took a few moments to wipe off the blood and brain matter from his feet, and then scouted around for his next target. Then suddenly his eyes were blinded by a series of bright lights that were flashing in a strobe-like pattern. With all the willpower he could muster, he shook off the Borg hypnotic attack and flew up and away at super speed in order to give himself a chance to shake off the effects.

Meanwhile, Dr. Sven Larsen, otherwise known as the Animal-Vegetable-Mineral Man, slumped over and took a few deep breaths. In the last couple of hours, he had been stunned, blasted and battered over and over. Even when he faced his old adversary, the Chief, and his superhero henchmen, the Doom Patrol, he had never come against such ferocity. The battles never lasted so long either. During his battles he did find some similarities between the Doom Patrol and the Borg such as Robotman's brain being housed in a humanoid robot body. The massive Giganta drone reminded him of Elasti-Girl's ability to grow to gigantic size. And Negative Man's energy body could stun people similar to how the Borg did for capturing new potential drones. But even though he hated the Chief and his Doom Patrol misfits, he wished they were here to fight at his side. Even the obnoxious shape changing Beast Boy and his stepfather, Mento, would be a welcome sight about now.

It was the screaming that made him raise his head. His body was still gigantic and was part of his superpowers that let him be part animal, part vegetable and part mineral all at the same time on different parts of his body. Currently he had the head of a longhorn bull, the right side of his body was that of an elm tree, and the left side of his body was iron, so when he looked for whoever was screaming, he had to look down to the ground.

There, near his hip, stood Princess Allura in the colorful Voltron flight uniform waving her hands in the air in the attempt to get his attention.

"What is it now?" he asked, annoyed, his breathing still a little ragged from all his exertions.

"Look!" she yelled, pointing across the valley that was rather torn up by all the fighting.

There lay Giant-Man, one of A-V-M Man's main combatants since arriving in this unusual land, was convulsing on the ground with the red Voltron lion-ship attached to his back. The red ship had a large tube distended from its mouth that went right into the upper part of Giant-Man's back at his spine.

"What the hell…?" The sight of the stabbing made his stomach, which was partially full of tree sap, queasy.

"The Borg have taken over one of my teammate's vessel! They are using it to turn Giant-Man into a drone!"

"Uff da," Sven muttered. "I get to fight with him again. Damn it!" He began augmenting his form, letting the lower part of his body from the waist down to morph into that on a giant silverback ape, his head and chest reverted to his natural Human shape but took on the crystalline features of a diamond, while his arms took on the form of some rather thick vines that he had seen attacking people in the jungle.

After getting up and taking a few steps forward, A-V-M Man extended his vine-like arms forward using them to wrap around Giant-Man and his lion ship on his back. "Oh, if only it would be this easy," Sven muttered to himself, then flinching as a smaller drone began shooting him. Fortunately for him, his diamond exterior proved to be resilient enough to protect him long enough for one of his fellow villains, Tri-Klops, to use his optical vision powers to incapacitate his attacker. Having a second chance, Sven tightened his grip even as Giant-Man started to try to sit up, his face vacant of emotion.

Sometime during the smaller drone's attack, the red lion vessel had disengaged itself from Giant-Man. The red lion vessel was covered by a thin layer of grayish capillaries that Sven hadn't even noticed until it started charging toward him.

Don't move or let go of Giant-Man! spoke a voice in his head.

He was about to ask the voice in his head if it was crazy, but then for a second, he thought he might be going crazy. His eyes widened when the giant metal lion-shaped vessel was almost on top of him.

Then, at the last possible moment, a blur of blue intercepted the attacking ship-drone, and both figures were knocked to the side, the impact making a long deep trench, toward where the Borg were coming from. Despite himself, A-V-M Man's jaw dropped where a somewhat familiar figure popped up from the far end of the trench.

That's not Superman, you dolt! said the voice in his head. That's Ultraman, Superman's Earth-3 counterpart.

"Who are you?" Despite his rather amazing abilities, Sven had never interacted much with the villainous superhuman community, or even faced any other heroes other than the Doom Patrol, so telepathic communication was new and frighteningly invasive to him.

My name is Brain Wave. I'm from Earth-2 so you may have not heard of me.

"Well, what are you doing in my head?"

It's Luthor's idea. My Luther from Earth-2, not the Earth-1 Luthor. He reasoned that the Borg function so efficiently because they are in constant communication with each other. So we are going to try use the telepaths we have available to coordinate aid, attacks and defensive measures. That's how Tri-Klops and Ultraman were able to keep you from being overwhelmed.

"Well, can one of them help me put this big boy down now?"

Tri-Klops is busy, but Ultraman should-

A bright red light flashed brightly nearby, and A-V-M Man had to fight to keep his hold on Giant-Man. Darkening some of the crystals that were his eyes, he could see that Ultraman was the focus of the bright light, under which he was writhing in pain. The source of the light came from another large robot that he hadn't seen on the battlefield before. It wasn't as big as the Giganta/Mr. Atom drone, but it was about one-thirds it's size but evidently powerful enough to take down someone as powerful as Superman. Without meaning to do so, Sven's mind accessed the identity flowchart that Hector Hammond had put in his brain earlier. Instantly, he now recognized the robot as one of the Decepticons called Reflector, a gestalt entity comprising three separate robots –SpyGlass, Spectro and ViewFinder– which come together to form one being.

"Brain Wave, are you seeing this?" But he heard nothing from the telepathic villain who was probably trying to coordinate an effort to save Ultraman. And then he felt a tugging on his vine-like arms. Giant-Man had evidently used the distraction to free his arms and was now pulling Sven towards him.

The Animal-Vegetable-Mineral Man tried changing the materials of which he was composed, but was surprised when he realized that he couldn't. He was stuck in the shape he was now in. He tried to turn his arms to mercury and slip through Giant-Man's fingers but then noticed that a new drone of a young hero named Surge was sending a low-level electrical current through his body which evidently interfered with Sven's ability to change shape.

"A little help here!" he shouted with a hint of panic. Glancing around, he could see a green lion vessel along with a red one smashed into the side of a nearby hill. The giant ape named Kong had already limped off with his fur still smoldering in search of a cool body of water in order to sooth his many wounds as well as his thirst. No one else seemed to be around.

"Need a hand?" said a voice. A man in a red outfit with a white metal helmet seemed to appear out of nowhere.

"If you can help, sure. But if you can't, find someone who can. Fast!"

"I wanted to test this more in the lab, but here goes nothing!"

The costumed man touched a dial on his belt and then seemed to grow and grow.

Not seeing the man of his mental list, he realized that this must be one of the heroes that had only recently become their allies. Sven asked, "Who are you?"

The other man tackled the Borg controlled Giant-Man to the ground. Managing to pin him to the ground, he looked up with a grin at Sven. "I normally go around with the alias Ant-Man, but if this works out, I may have to consider changing it to Giant-Man, because I have to say I love the view from up here."

The A-V-M Man walked over. Whatever the drone was doing to keep him from changing forms, it had also taken away the motility of his vine-like limbs, so he managed to sit down next to Giant-Man and the giant Ant-Man and began to use his gorilla feet to untangle his vine-like arms from around their captive.

"Pardon me for not understanding, but shouldn't we be keeping him tied up?" inquired Ant-Man.

"He's doing something! I'm not in control!"

Just then Giant-Man managed to push up and break free from the Ant-Man. A-V-M Man reached over with his ape-like feet, grabbing for Giant-Man's throat, but Giant-Man managed to get a hold of his feet instead.

This fight was not turning out very well at all.

oOoOoOo

Zack Allen was trying his best, but no matter what he did the Borg just kept coming. He had seen several of his colleagues from Babylon 5 fall to the Borg and then be led away to be converted into more drones. The thought of it happening to him chilled him to his soul. But he continued to fight. He was not going down without a fight. "I have to keep this spot open," he said to himself.

A blur went passed him. A few shots later the blur returned and practically collapsed next to him.

"You all right, Cole?"

The Cirronian was breathing hard. "This constant use of hyperspeed is wearing on me."

His name was actually Daggon, but he had taken the name of Cole when he had landed on Earth in his pursuit of two hundred and eighteen escaped prisoners to apprehend.

Cole had been given the task of collecting people if they were stunned so that the Borg couldn't turn them into drones.

"Here," Zack said, pulling out a wrapped bar. "It's an energy bar. It should help some."

Cole nodded his thanks, and took off the wrapper.

They watched as the Scarlet Witch had sent a hex at a group of drones, making them fall apart and catch on fire.

"I wouldn't want to be her boyfriend," Zack commented.

A blur went passed them and then came back. Cole and Zack turned to see Quicksilver placing Willie, one of the Visitor aliens, down on the ground. Fred Burkle was scanning one of the recovering Chimpanzees, and then turned to regard Willie. Seeing that he was an alien, she called for one of Luthor drones, Colt Seavers, to check him because they would have a better understanding of the alien physiology.

Tommy Webber was just getting to his feet and staggered to return to his friends on the fighting line. Fred managed to drag him back and sit him down. Tommy reluctantly agreed for the time being.

There was a 'yip' canine sound and Zack turned to see the werewolf Oz fly through the air. Zack turned to see where the werewolf had come from only to see an unprocessed drone walking forward wearing black but with a skull and crossbones on his chest. Tarzan was on his back, trying to slice the drone's neck, but the knife couldn't cut it.

"We got an enhanced drone!" Zack called out, hoping someone would hear.

Quicksilver raced toward the drone with the skull and crossbones only to bounce off of the drone's body shield. Cole used his speed to catch Quicksilver. Before the two speedsters could recover, another drone stunned them.

A clear, flying bowling ball with a skull inside it slammed into the back of the super-strong and invulnerable Black Terror. The flying bowling ball circled back only to be grabbed in midair by a man in a green costume, his skin covered in grey veins.

"Let go of my dad!" roared the Bowler.

"Got him!" Ham 'The Fixer' Tyler called out. He sent out a blast of photon blasts into the flying man's face. Cracks appeared on the man's face, pieces falling off revealing a circuitry underneath. "He's an android!"

"Hey! Hey! I recognize him!" Ringo Langly of the Lone Gunmen shouted out. "The flying guy is Dynamic Man and the skull and crossbones dude is the Black Terror! They're comic book heroes!"

The Dynamic Man drone began to exert pressure on the bowling ball in his hands.

"That flying robot is going to crush my father's skull!" shouted the Bowler.

From above Vampirella flew down from the sky and dropped Magnus onto Dynamic Man's back. The infected android swung out an arm and struck Vampirella which sent her flying. Magnus, the robot fighter from the future, struck the android's neck twice at very precise angles, then reached out and twisted the head off. The disconnected android stopped flying and crashed to the ground, letting the cracked bowling ball float away to the Bowler.

Magnus had leapt to the ground, but was stunned before he reached it.

The lion-like Vincent had tried slashing the Black Terror only to be backhanded away fifteen feet leaving him barely conscious.

"We need something stronger than guns and claws!" shouted Tyler, hoping someone would have the answer.

Tyler had been joined by Billy Rosewood and Ezekiel Stone, but their weapons were not working on the Black Terror.

"He's invulnerable and super-strong!" shouted Langly.

"We've noticed!" yelled Rosewood.

Xander Harris hurried forward, hoping to stop the superhero drone before it passed the wall. Using his Jedi abilities, he sent the body of the Dynamic Man flying into the side of Black Terror.

He ignited his lightsaber.

"No! The hero is mine to feast upon!"

Xander barely had time to look back to see a purple man running toward him and the Black Terror. Xander first realized the man must be one of the villains that the Master had collected. It was his second thought that he recognized the onrushing man as the Parasite. It was a second after that that he realized what that meant.

He was only partially able to use his Jedi abilities to jump away.

And while the Parasite did gain a little of Xander's Jedi abilities, he was focused on the Black Terror. The Parasite lives in a constant state of hunger, and he feeds of the life energies of others. Those with super abilities were the best and satisfied him the longest. Unfortunately, he wasn't allowed to feed on his allies, the telepaths put blocks in his head to keep him from doing that. And when they'd been fighting the heroes, he hadn't been able to get close enough to one to feed off on. He had wanted to feed off of the drones, but they were too dangerous to get near. And then he had seen the Black Terror drone who had not been processed to have a weaponized prosthetic arm. He was too hungry and determined to consume this morsel.

"I think the Borg didn't fully convert the Black Terror because of his invulnerability!" shouted Langly.

"Do you have any useful knowledge in your head that we can use?" Tyler called back.

"Um, I think I see the Shield, the Fly, The Web, and, oh, what is he called… Man o' Metal, and there is Samson I think. And the blond lady is Miss Masque. And there is the Flame and Flame Girl. The red and black dude is the original Daredevil, and he uses boomerangs!" Langly laughed. "Who would have thought my knowledge of obscure superheroes could one day become useful!" With a grin, he worked on trying to recognize more. "That's, um, oh, it's on the tip of my tongue."

Mister Monster said a voice in Langly's head.

"Um, is someone in my head?" asked Langly.

Sorry for the intrusion. I am Professor X. You seem to have some rudimentary knowledge of these latest drone attackers. I would like to know what they can do, and also learn any weaknesses they might have that we can exploit.

"Um, yeah, sure. I had those nano-probes in me before back when they invaded my universe. I wouldn't want that for anyone." Langly could feel the subtle shifting in his head as Professor X sorted through the necessary information. "You, uh, aren't going to look anywhere else in my head, are you?"

It is not necessary. Finding data like this is similar to using a search engine on the Internet. I simply ask for relevant data on specific subjects. Your mind immediately shows what I need.

Langly shifted uncomfortably. Still, he let his eyes roam the newest drones coming from beyond the trees. There were several Sleestak drones, but there were a few drones that had been only partially completed. Langly wasn't sure if it was because the Borg were running short of building materials or if they were just trying to rush their opponents in order to stop the opposition as well as gain all new drones.

Amazing Man, Captain Midnight, Sub-Zero Man, Green Turtle, Lash Lightning, Atoman, Hydroman, Pyroman, Black Owl, Rocketgirl, Steel Sterling and Crimebuster, named off Professor X. Thank you, Langly. This should help us stop them faster and with less loss.

"Ah, your welcome?"

Meanwhile, Parasite had nearly drained the Black Terror in a frenzy. He pushed the weakened drone away and went after the nearest powerhouse which was Samson. The Parasite was drunk on power, and he wanted more.

As the Web drone made to grab the Parasite, the purple-skinned villain swatted the Web drone away, absorbing some of that drone's strength even as he rushed to tackle the Samson drone. The Samson drone was knocked down, but then an aura flared around it. The Parasite roared in outrage. "No! Feed me! You are meant to feed me, damn you! I need your energies!"

It appears the Borg have adapted to blocking the Parasite's draining abilities, Professor X told everyone.

Detective Roger Murtaugh and a Visitor alien named Thelma were helping to care the wounded from the field starting with Magnus. Jarod and Cordelia Chase grabbed picked up Quicksilver while Zack Allen and Lucas Wolenczak brought in Cole. Vampirella picked up Vincent and carried his groaning body to relative safety.

The newly arrived hero drones were only in the first stage of being transformed into a Borg drone. Gray tendrils of nano-probed could be seen under their skin. In the case of the invulnerable heroes that had been infected, their outer skin was covered in a layer of gray nano-probes to the same effect.

Laughter filled the air, startling the non-drones in the area. The Shadow and the Spider appeared as if from shadow and smoke. Somewhere they had picked up augmented guns, which they used to fire upon the drones.

The fully processed drones had forcefields to protect them. The invulnerable drones were not harmed. Several of the other drones were injured including Captain Midnight, Miss Masque, the Web and the Green Turtle. Crimebuster, however, was killed. The drone of Pyroman sent out a burst of electrical energy similar to a small lightning bolt that struck and killed the Spider while the Shadow ducked for cover only to be stunned by a Sleestak drone.

"The first-stage drones are vulnerable to gunfire!" called out Tyler. "Keep hitting them!" Behind Tyler stood Lucas Wolenczak, who couldn't believe this man who looked and sounded so much like Captain Hudson of the Seaquest DSV, yet was so bloodthirsty, too.

"The first-stage drones are the easiest to save!" argued Roger Murtaugh. "These are heroes! We need to make an effort to save them!"

As an argument was about to begin, the drones began to attack in earnest. The drones of Flame and Flame Girl used their flame guns to unleash a wave of fire and heat. The Man o' Metal drone walked right into the flames unharmed. The Pryoman and Lash Lightning drones began sending blasts of electrical energy toward the other part of the wall aided by the Atoman drone.

It was while the Hydroman drone was turning into a large ball of water filled with gray nano-probes, that the first retaliation began. Some of the unprocessed drones could still infect them. As the Hydroman drone flowed forward, he was suddenly struck by a barrage from the Human Torch.

Colossus was next as the metal Russian charged into the flames and began to beat on the Man o' Metal drone.

As the Rocketgirl and the Fly drones took to the air, the drone was met with Vampirella and the Rocketeer.

Others were arriving to deal with the empowered drones all under the guidance of Professor X.

Lightning Lord and Storm exchanged blasts of lightning with the drones of Lash Lightning and Pyroman.

Captain Boomerang used his namesake weapon against the boomerang of the drone of Daredevil.

Neutrax of the Legion of Super-Villains quickly neutralized the powers of Atoman and the Sub-Zero Man before the Borg adapted to Neutrax's neutralizing ray.

Captain America fought the Shield drone. The drone of Samson exchanged blows with Hercules. Deadpool tackled the drone of the Black Owl. The Amazing Man drone was fought by the interdimensional operative Steel.

And so it went on. In addition to that, the drones that had been shot were being repaired by the nanites in their systems.

But even in such circumstances plans were at work. The Lex Luthor that had been recruited along with Clark Kent outside of Smallville by the fourth Doctor was organizing three of the drones he had gained when he had survived a rupture in the Borg Collective which had been caused by the technomage known as Galen. It had been decided to allow Lex to keep only the drones whose minds were so damaged that they could never be restored to basic living. In preparation for this altercation Lex had made sure his drones looked different so they could not be mistaken for the drones of the Borg Queen. Therefore, they had been armored in green and purple battle suits. Colt Seavers, Sam Axe and Byrd Tatums marched to follow their standing orders. As the drones were in battle with various superheroes and villains, Lex's drones would move in and administer a variant of nano-probes to nullify that which connects them to the Borg.

The problem began when Mr. Incredible's back went out while grappling with the Steel Sterling drone.

The Steel Sterling drone threw Mr. Incredible at Lightning Lord, knocking him out of the spy, and thus freeing up Pyroman. Mr. Incredible was about to crash into Lucas Wolenczak, but Ezekiel Stone lunged forward and pushed him away only to be struck himself.

"HMM, SOMETHING IS ODD ABOUT THIS ONE."

"That's okay. I have come for him."

The cloaked skeleton glanced over in surprise. "YOUR NAME IS ANDREW, YES?"

The angel of death nodded. "And you usually as called Death, or sometimes Bill Door." Andrew turned his attention to the man who had just died.

"Hello, Ezekiel."

"Um, did I just die… again?"

"Not the first time I heard that," said the angel with a kind smile.

"Sorry. I mean, I knew I could die at any time. This is a battlefield. I was just hoping to do more."

"You saved that young man's life."

Ezekiel glanced over at Lucas who was staring in shock at Ezekiel's body.

Roger Murtaugh was trying to help Mr. Incredible up but the hero was still having problems moving due to his back.

"Don't worry. They will work through their guilt even if it wasn't really their fault."

"I hope so," Ezekiel managed to say.

"PEOPLE ARE RESILIENT IN THAT WAY" added the other Death.

"Thank you for helping out around here," Andrew said to Death. "I have to take Ezekiel away to where he belongs."

"I USUALLY JUST LET THEM FIND THEIR OWN WAY."

"Ezekiel has been freed from a deal with the devil. The devil is sure to try one last grab for him so if you would just keep things going as they should until I get back, I would appreciate it."

"I was wondering…" Ezekiel began. "I figure the other angels I met will know that I have died. But could you let Mark Gordon know where I ended up?"

Andrew smiled. "It would be my pleasure. And I would get to see my old friend Jonathan, too."

"I HOPE TO SEE YOU SOON. GOOD DAY, ANDREW. GOOD DAY, EZEKIEL."

As the Angel of Death left with Ezekiel, Death examined another small hourglass. "RIGHT ABOUT… NOW!" And he swung his scythe.

"What was that? What just happened?" The man looked around at the battle around him. Everyone was ignoring him. "I feel different."

"MOST PEOPLE DO,"

"Who the hell are you?"

"JUST SOMEONE DOING THEIR JOB."

"Then I will just find out who you are by feeding on you!"

The Parasite jumped forward and clamped a hand on Death's face. Death just stood there.

"What? I'm not getting anything from you. Are you some kind of android or robot?"

"NEITHER. YOU ARE DEAD. THE BORG VAPORIZED YOUR BODY SINCE THEY SAW YOU AS TOO MUCH OF A THREAT."

"Dead?" He stared around him trying to find some proof that this was a lie. "My hunger is gone."

"Don't worry about that. At least not yet." A man walked through the warzone as if he were appreciatively meandering through an exquisite rose garden. He turned an eye on Death. "This soul is mine."

"IT IS NOT UP TO ME TO DECIDE WHO GETS WHAT SOUL. I JUST FREE THEM FROM THEIR MORTAL SHELL."

The Devil chuckled. "I know. I know. I just wanted to gather up Rudy here in person. Plus, I like the ambiance of a good battlefield in play. I gain so much from it."

"Hey!" the Parasite spoke with alarm. "I'm not going anywhere with this guy!"

The Devil grinned. "You had that choice while you were alive. Now, your choice is over, and your actions have given yourself to me and mine whether you meant to or not!"

Shadow demons rose from the ground and clamped hold of the Parasite, then pulled him under the ground as the Parasite screamed.

"YOU DO LIKE TO MAKE A SPECTACLE, DON'T YOU?"

The Devil just shrugged and faded away. "I'll be back!"

Death shrugged, not understanding why mortals would choose evil if such a fate awaited them for doing so. Giving up that subject for the moment, he examined his remaining hourglasses, and determined that if he hurried, he could line up another shot on his golf ball before he had to sever another life.

"OH BUGGER!" he remarked, as he saw that Ant-Man, who was now a giant, was standing on his golf ball. "I'LL HAVE TO TAKE A MUGGIGAN."

To be Continued!

Original AuThOr'S NoTeS: 12/31/2010

There is a lot going on in this chapter. I wanted to focus a chapter on what the villains were going through. I had planned on this chapter being longer but I wanted to post it before the New Year.

Now I only hinted at this, but Black Adam was blinded by the Borg controlled Reflector, one of the lesser known Decepticons. Also, Reflector was shining red solar light onto Ultraman, which would deplete most, if not all, of his superpowers.

I wrote this before Vision was mentioned for the Avengers. Otherwise, I would have included him. Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, Wasp and Ant-Man were all listed in IMDB as going to be in the Avengers lineup in the movies a couple of years before the movie came out which is why I used them. I also didn't know that they were going to kill off Quicksilver, which is why he is alive in my story.

I added a lot more to this chapter which had originally had just been the Decepticons trying to pull themselves together and everything before Ant-Man made his appearance.

I pulled together a lot of obscure older heroes. If you are curious about them, then I recommend checking on Comic Vine. It's a good site to use for that. I also figured that I should resolve the Ezekiel Stone situation from A Tangled Web Part 5: How Much Is Too Much?.
