Jade could see that the sky was lightening from the deep blue slumber. The entire room was washed in an early morning blue but she still hadn't gotten the chance to fall asleep. She stood in front of the window after coming back from the bathroom. Draco was probably asleep already. She was tired and ready to go to sleep as well but she felt odd. How were things going to change when he woke up? How would he react to her in front of others? For a second, she thought it was best if she took her clothes and left but she didn't want to make it an already awkward situation out of it. When she thought about the hours that they spent together and the affection he gave her, it made her feel dizzy. She couldn't help but smile, thinking about him.
"Are you all right?" he asked, breaking her thoughts.
Jade jumped and turned around to see Draco sitting on the edge of the bed, watching her. He looked tired too but she could see that his features lightening while looking at her.
"Yeah, I just had to go to the bathroom." Jade said softly. Draco lifted his arm, gesturing her to come towards him. Jade smiled, walking to him. He took her hand until she was standing in front of him.
"Aren't you tired?" Jade asked, pushing his hair back as he circled his arms around her waist.
"Aren't you cold? It's freezing." He said.
"It is very cold. You're a rich man, can't you afford heat?" Jade asked.
"Why do I need heat when I've got someone to warm me up in bed?" he asked with a grin. Jade raised her eyebrows.
"Oh? And I suppose there are others that do this bed warming service for you?" Jade asked, crossing her arms.
"You're the warmest I've had in a very long time, I'll leave it at that." He said, pulling her close. Jade leaned over and kissed him. He gently sat her on his lap and they both looked at each other in silence before crawling back to bed.
The sound of someone shouting and a door opening jerked Jade awake from her sleep. She blinked, seeing that the sun was peering through the large windows, into Draco's bedroom. It was still early in the morning and she might have gotten an hour or two to sleep. She heard someone shuffling around outside of the bedroom and started to panic. Her clothes and his clothes were strewn in the living room. She could hear Scorpius playing with his toys. Jade realized that Draco was still sleeping with his body wrapped around hers.
"Draco." Jade whispered. She shook his shoulder, hearing him grunt. Jade clicked her teeth, shaking him awake. "You have to get up! Someone's here!" she whispered.
Draco blinked a few times before shaking his head. He rubbed his eyes and checked the clock on the nightstand.
"It's Kate." He said before going back to sleep. Jade was propped up with her elbows.
"Kate who?" Jade asked.
"I don't know her last name." Draco said with his eyes closed.
"I didn't ask for her last name. Who is she and what is she doing in your house with Scorpius?" Jade asked.
"Does it bother a woman you don't know has keys to my flat?" he asked, smiling with his eyes still closed. Jade didn't find it funny at all. She decided not to ask any more questions.
"Could you please get me my clothes from the living room? I want to go home." Jade said, getting off the bed. She burned in embarrassment, trying to put her underwear back on. She was probably another conquest for him. If his girlfriend was here, she would rather much avoid a confrontation.
"What are you doing?" he asked, seeing her walking into the bathroom with his t-shirt on.
"Please get me my clothes from the other room." Jade said a little louder. He could hear the irritation in her tone. He realized that he shouldn't have joked about something like that. Her cheeks were flushed and she couldn't even look him in the eyes.
"Is something wrong?" he asked innocently as he got up from the bed. Jade walked out of the bathroom again to see that he was naked, reaching for his pants.
"You're too disgusting for words, Malfoy. My clothes. Please." Jade said sternly, seeing his smirk getting bigger.
"What the hell did I do-"
The door opened and Kate was standing there with Scorpius. She let out a small scream when she saw Draco naked and closed the door again.
"What the bloody fuck is wrong with that girl?" Draco asked furiously, rushing over and locking the door. Jade stood there, feeling embarrassed for Draco. Draco shoved his legs into a pair of grey sweats and pulled a shirt over his head. He opened the door and walked out, slamming it behind him. .
"Are you fucking stupid? Were your parents a pair of gorillas, raising you in the jungle where you just walked into someone's bedroom without knocking first?" Draco asked.
"I-I-I'm sorry-"
"Oh that's nice. You've learned to apologize but do you actually know what they mean or is it some type of meaningless fashion statement you lot started to use these days?" Draco asked.
Jade could hear the girl weeping. She wanted to go outside and intervene but it was probably not her place to do so. She felt incredibly uncomfortable hearing Draco go back to his old Slytherin roots and humiliate the poor girl. Jade shook her head, wishing Draco hadn't shagged her common sense out last night. She mistook the nanny for his girlfriend. The bedroom door opened and Draco walked back inside, satisfied with himself.
"Sorry about that." He said, handing her, her clothes back. Jade took them without saying anything. "That's Scorpius's nanny if you still hadn't figured it out yet." He said with a smirk.
Jade gave him a short smile and nodded.
"Are you okay?" Draco asked, concerned. He reached over, touching her cheek. "I can tell her to apologize to you too if-"
"She doesn't have to apologize to me, that's absurd." Jade said.
"You look uncomfortable. If it's because of her-"
"I'm uncomfortable because of you and I think you're the one to apologize, not her." She said.
"And how does that make any sense?" he asked.
"You really twist my brain, Malfoy, you really do. There are times when I see that you're so sweet and considerate and other times when you can just be a completely different person like you were in school." Jade said.
"She walked into my room without knocking, caught me completely naked. She should apologize and thank me." Draco said, crossing his arms.
"First of all, get over yourself. Second, she should apologize, I agree but you didn't have to say all those things to her. You have a right to be angry but I think you should really think about what you say to people sometimes. That girl takes care of your child. She decides what he eats, watches or hears during the entire day and is responsible for his safety. You should treat her a little nicer." Jade said.
"I pay her well. I think that's as 'nice' as she can be treated." Draco said, starting to walk away.
"Money doesn't teach people manners." Jade said.
"So you're going to lecture me about manners now?" Draco asked.
"No, I don't have enough time in this world to teach you something like that." Jade said.
"Good one." Draco said sarcastically.
"Your son is very impressionable and he looks up to you as to how to treat people in the future. What kind of knowledge do you think he learned, seeing you berate that poor girl? These experiences ingrain themselves in children, because of the things they are exposed to. You are his role model. I'm sure you want him to be the best person he can be when he grows up, right?" Jade asked. She didn't know what else to say. He was standing there, with his arms crossed, in deep thought. She didn't know if she had offended him. He might have looked annoyed but he really was mulling over her words.
"Is that it?" he asked.
"Yep." Jade said.
"Are you sure?" he asked. Jade nodded. "Mhmm." Draco didn't say anything. He turned around and left the bedroom. Jade knew he wasn't going to take the advice. She shook her head and saw him walk over to Scorpius and greet him a good morning. Once a pompous prick, always a pompous prick. Jade started wearing her clothes from last night. She was overstaying her welcome. She didn't want to linger anymore after trying to tell him how to raise his child. Jade went to leave the bedroom but saw the nanny leaving with Scorpius.
"Kate?" Draco called out after her.
"Y-Yes, sir." Kate said, nervously, her face pale.
Draco sighed, looking at Scorpius who was quiet, watching him. He looked back at Kate.
"I'm sorry about what I've said. I shouldn't have said those things." Draco said. Kate looked like she couldn't believe the situation. Before he could make up his mind, she responded immediately.
"No sir, you don't have to apologize." Kate said.
"No, I do. I shouldn't lose my temper and speak to people that way. Next time, I would like for you to knock before you come in. Okay?" he said.
"Yes absolutely, I'm so sorry. It'll never happen again." Kate said graciously.
"It's okay. Here's a few Galleons, buy yourself and Scorpius some treats. No ice cream as usual." Draco warned, seeing them leave.
After a few thousand 'thank you's' from Kate, Draco closed the door. He turned around to see Jade leaning on the bedroom doorway frame with her arms crossed. She looked smug and he sighed, rolling his eyes.
"Have I done well, your Excellency?" Draco asked.
"Come hither so I may knight you, noble man." Jade said as Draco walked towards her.
"You're doing it all wrong. The Queen should be naked during the ceremony. Haven't you learned anything in muggle studies?" Draco asked, taking her clothes off.
"No, it seems like we were in completely different classes. I suppose the Queen knights them in the bathroom as opposed to on the bed?" Jade asked, helping Draco take off his shirt as he guided her into the bathroom.
"It's a good thing I paid attention." He said, kissing her.
An hour later, Draco was in the kitchen, chatting away with Jade while making breakfast. Jade was sitting on a stool at the kitchen bar, watching Draco serve her eggs and bacon. He poured her orange juice and grabbed two pieces of toast. He looked up, seeing her admiring him, her hand under her chin. Her face was glowing and her hair still wet from the shower. He placed his hands on the counter, giving her a pointed look.
"What?" he asked.
"What?" Jade asked, innocently.
"Why are you looking at me like that?" Draco asked. Jade shrugged, shaking her head, still looking mischievous.
"I don't know what you mean." Jade said. Draco sighed, turning back to get her jam. He took a butter knife and handed it to her.
"It's me making you breakfast, isn't it?" he asked, seeing her chuckle.
"You're full of surprises. I feel like I need to take a picture for proof when I tell people about this." Jade said, seeing him get his own plate and walk around the counter to sit next to her.
"And your fiancé? Are you going to show him too?" Draco asked. Jade gasped, thinking over it.
"Cormac hasn't popped into my head all night and all morning. He must be at my house, or at the hospital, trying to find out where I am." Jade said.
"That's not obsessive at all. Are you still planning to sample cakes and find florists for your ridiculous wedding?" Draco asked.
"Oh come on. He's not that bad." Jade said, looking at her plate.
"You can't be serious, Longbottom. You're still getting married to him?" Draco asked.
"I don't know. I don't think so. He's just been really supportive and nice to me all these years." Jade said, weakly.
"That doesn't mean you owe him a marriage. Give him a thank you card or something." Draco said. Jade laughed, seeing him smirk.
"Okay, well let's say I do give him a thank you card and call off this wedding. What happens to me then?" Jade asked.
"You focus on your career, spend time with your mother, spend time with your friends, have a few dinners with me." He said, taking her hand. Jade's heart warmed as she took in his hand. She blushed, seeing him smile and go back to his food.
"I think that's a pretty good idea." Jade said, seeing him nod.
"Right? One day at a time." He said, seeing her nod in agreement.
"Absolutely. Hey, what happened to the paintings from yesterday?" Jade asked. Draco shook his head. "What do you mean? Where are they?" Jade asked.
"One day at a time, love." He said.
"Can I please just see them? I know you don't want me to but I think they're very beautiful." Jade said.
"Nope." He said.
"Did you throw them away?" Jade asked.
"I was thinking of doing it yesterday but I changed my mind. It's kept away, very far, away from you." He said. Jade sighed.
"As long as they're not thrown away. I could buy them from you. I really liked the couple in the snow." Jade said. He looked reluctant to talk about it. Instead, he was finishing his breakfast and Jade found it useless to prod him further.
After she left Draco's flat, Jade apparated to The Burrow to see Ginny. Cormac was probably snooping around her house, trying to bombard her with questions and stories of himself. She knocked on the door, seeing Ginny answer.
"Well there you are! Where have you been? I sent Harry to your house, thinking you were murdered or something! Why are you still in last night's clothes?" Ginny asked.
Jade tried to look normal but instead went wide eyed and red. Ginny understood within seconds.
"Oh my god." Ginny whispered, closing the door behind her. "You slept with…?" Ginny asked, seeing Jade put a finger to her lips. "Wait, just so we're clear, it was Malfoy, right?" Ginny asked.
"Who else would it be?" Jade asked, seeing Ginny look relieved.
"No, sorry. You were just so drunk I would have thought McLaggen or something." Ginny said.
"Why on earth would I want to do that?" Jade asked.
"Oh I don't know…maybe because you're marrying him?" Ginny asked. Jade shook her head and pointed at the door.
"Is Fred and Ass inside?" Jade asked, seeing Ginny nod.
"That's why I closed the door. I didn't want things to be awkward. Do you want to take a walk?" Ginny asked, seeing Jade nod.
"Sure. I don't think seeing Fred would be a good idea right now." Jade said, seeing Ginny nod. Ginny opened the door and Jade stood at the doorway to see Harry walk by them.
"Jade! What are you doing there?" Harry asked.
"Er…I'm just. I like the sun." Jade said, seeing Harry furrow his eyebrows at her. He glanced up and looked back at Jade.
"Looks really cloudy. How are you feeling?" he asked, seeing her nod.
"I feel pretty okay. How are you?" Jade asked, feeling the blood creeping up to her face again. She saw Fred poke his head out and smile at her.
"There she is!" Fred said.
"Where?" Astoria asked from upstairs.
"Erm…" Jade said, feeling even worse.
"Are you okay? You look like you're about to have a fever." Harry said.
"Harry could you watch the kids? I'm just going out for a quick stroll with Jade." Ginny said, kissing his cheek.
"Are you sure she's okay to walk?" Harry asked.
"What's wrong babe? Looks like you just saw a ghost!" Fred said.
"Looks like she had a busy night." Astoria commented.
"What do you mean?" Fred asked, looking back at Jade.
"You're still wearing last night's clothes. Are you still drunk?" Fred asked.
"Are you still wearing last night's clothes?" Harry asked.
"Still wearing last night's clothes." Astoria confirmed with a nod.
"I can wear whatever the fuck I want!" Jade exploded.
Harry, Astoria and Fred looked shocked at Jade's sudden outburst.
"I'm sorry-" Harry started but Jade cut him off.
"No it's not you Harry. I'm sorry. It just feels like I have a thousand voices saying the same things to me in my head." Jade said, looking at Astoria and Fred. Harry cautiously looked over to where Jade was looking at.
"They have muggle Healers for that. They're called psychiatrists." Harry said.
"What?" Ginny and Jade asked.
"You shagged him, didn't you!" Astoria said. Jade felt horribly guilty, looking back to the ground. Fred scoffed, not believing what Astoria said and looked back at Jade.
"Already?" Fred asked.
"Oh Merlin, let's just go." Ginny said, taking Jade's arm.
They left and Ginny specifically ordered Fred and Astoria not to follow. Instead, they decided that they would go and harass Malfoy instead. Jade covered her face with her hands.
"I can't believe this is happening." Jade said.
"It's okay. He needs a good earful of those two anyways. I've been babysitting those two all night while you two get to make sweet love? I haven't even properly touched Harry for weeks because of those two." Ginny said, looking exhausted.
"I'm so sorry Gin. Why are they with you, anyways? Why couldn't they eat Malfoy's brains?" Jade asked.
"Because they were too busy trying to convince me on how to get you two together. And it worked." Ginny said.
"Sounds like them." Jade said.
"They want you two to be happy. Are you happy?" Ginny asked. Jade smiled, nodding.
"Honestly Gin, I really am. I'm very happy when I'm around him and I haven't felt this way since Fred." Jade said, seeing Ginny smile and hold her hand. "He's full of surprises. He's sweet, he's funny, he gives me a headache sometimes but he does care about me." Jade said. "I just feel uncomfortable seeing Astoria and Fred around. It just feels like I'm betraying them." Jade sighed.
"It's what they tortured me for. They sang all night to get me to agree to help them get the both of you together. And I saw it last night too. He becomes a completely different person around you. I charmed the mistletoe on him, by the way. I saw the way he desperately hovered around you all night. Like a vulture on a carcass." Ginny said.
For the next few weeks, Jade ignored all of Cormac's letters and busied herself with answering Draco's letters. She laughed when Draco told her about Fred and Astoria calling him a pervert. Jade still wasn't able to talk about it with Fred and Astoria who had been avoiding her too. She continued to bother Draco over owl about showing her his paintings but they were all in vain.
I do have a birthday in a month and you won't be invited to my party unless I get what I want. I had a pretty terrible day. I think my evaluation didn't go as well as I thought it would. Keep your fingers crossed! How was your day?
-Jade
That's all right. Parties are for children anyway. I can always give you what you want when we're alone. I'm sure you won't have any complaints. I had a good day for the most part. You should come over for dinner one of these days. Astoria and Fred won't leave me alone and I don't know why I have to be the one to tolerate their tyranny. I'm sorry you had a bad day; maybe this will cheer you up.
-Draco
Jade opened the other note that Draco sent with his letter. She saw a small colored sketch of her sipping coffee peacefully in the jungle. It was before Draco had interrupted her. She was in dark green t-shirt and shorts and black boots. Her hair was tied into a French braid as she looked out into the morning light, sitting on the wooden steps near the jungle. The way he had sketched it out was beautiful. She turned the sketch around to see his message:
Remembering the peaceful times of an excellent Healer.
Jade was smiling manically. He had to have known how much it meant to her. How was she going to be able to respond and match it?
"Pookie?" Cormac asked, breaking Jade's thoughts.
"Hmm?" Jade asked, still looking at the sketch.
"Pookie!" Cormac called.
"What?" Jade asked, looking up.
"Are you listening to me?" Cormac asked.
"Yes. No. What is it, Cormac?" Jade asked.
Cormac didn't like the way she her eyes were smiling. Her thoughts were still on the letters that she kept getting every second of the day. She was either writing or reading or giggling to herself. She looked like the world's biggest fool if you asked him but apparently she didn't know that.
"How about we have lunch?" Cormac asked.
"I'm not really hungry. You can go eat something if you want." Jade said, going back to her letter.
"Pookie, you've been spending more time with those letters than me! We have a wedding in a few weeks! I've been planning and going to these appointments all by myself because I know you don't do these things." Cormac said.
"Mhmm." Jade said, walking past him, still smiling at a sketch.
Cormac grabbed the sketch and tore it out of Jade's hand. He looked at it and looked up, seeing her going to grab the sketch.
"Who's sending you these?" Cormac asked, holding it away from Jade as tried to get it back from Cormac.
"What the hell is wrong with you, McLaggen? What is your problem?" Jade asked, furiously.
"You've been so busy with letters for so long. You can't even look at me! I am your fiancé!" Cormac said.
"That's none of your business! Give that back to me." Jade said. She looked like she was a few seconds away from pummeling him. He was twice her size but she looked like she would have done anything to get the sketch back.
"Or what?" Cormac asked.
"Accio note!" Jade said.
The letter flew out of Cormac's hand and Jade pointed her wand at him. "Don't even move a finger. You're way out of line Cormac. Mind your own business." Jade said.
"I am not minding my own business until I know who is sending you those letters! Let me remind you again. I am your fiancé." Cormac said. Jade rolled her eyes.
"You keep saying that as if it has a meaning." Jade said. Cormac didn't take that statement too well. He looked startled.
"What does that mean?" he asked.
"Look, I actually wanted to talk to you about this. I don't think we should get-"
Cormac pointed his wand at the sketch and muttered 'incendio'. Jade dropped the note and before she could recover it, the flames engulfed the entire sketch in a matter of a few seconds. She stared at the ashes and looked back at Cormac. Before Cormac could say anything, Jade gave him a sharp slap.
"Get out of my house." Jade said.
