Insight led the crowd into the room. It resembled a classroom, with desks scattered about the area. Standing at the front of the room, trying to look serious but just looking ridiculous instead, was a Salandit.
"This is Amphibian," the Guildmaster said. "Team Keeper has generously offered to take time off of their job to help me out today. Amphibian, would you please explain the test?"
"Yes, ma'am! Hi, I'm Amphibian." The Salandit took a step forward, trying to fix his posture. "So you see those papers? Each of you is going to take one. We only made enough for each of you to have one. So don't take more than one! So you take one of those, put your name on it, put your partner's name next to your name, and you answer the questions on it. It's simple. It's math and stuff. If you and your partner do good enough, you'll go to the battle test. Good? Got it?"
It took everyone a moment to register that Amphibian had finished his sentence. When they did, they picked up the papers and brought them to individual desks, beginning their work.
Amphibian sat down on the floor. I should never become a teacher, he realized, thinking about what he just said. Or a Guildmaster, or a public speaker, or…
As the potential future members of Insight's Guild wrote the intelligence test, a Kleavor marched across the plains to the east of Spotlight Town. His wings had been slashed off decades ago, and he walked towards the port town with purpose.
A lone monstrous Tauros stampeded over a nearby hill towards him. The Kleavor grabbed its horns and threw it at a tree nearby.
"Not another one," he moaned, running at the Tauros and slashing its stomach open. He shook his head, deciding to take a break here. He sat down under the tree, pulling out a rock with strange purple energy flowing through it. He held it close to his mouth.
"Sigil," he said. "Respond to this message."
"I'm heeere… Maaantiiisss." The voice that responded was high and screechy, and echoed a couple of times.
Mantis replied, "Contact Orc and ask her of her progress with the entrance tests. If she does not respond, contact her again."
Sigil chuckled. "Aaare you jussst aaaskiiing… becaaause you kiiilled a thiiing… to impreeess her?"
"Shut up, Sigil!" the Kleavor shouted. "I have no affection for that Granbull! She is my minion, same as you, and I suggest you contact her before I fire you!"
Mantis put the rock back into his pouch before Sigil could respond. He stood up, continuing his march westward.
"Pencils down, guys!"
Amphibian's announcement after thirty minutes of straight writing was welcomed. Most Pokemon shook their hands in an attempt to get the blood back into them, and those that used other means to write simply sighed in relief. Amphibian collected the tests, returning them to the Guildmaster.
Insight nodded, beginning to check the tests. As the potential future Guild members stayed, staring with anticipation, Amphibian glanced at the Xatu. "I'm pretty sure you're allowed to wait outside. I think." The Pokemon wasted no time, running out the door and beginning to chat in the halls.
"Wow, that was tough!" Mizuchi stated, breaking into a fit of laughter. "I'm so glad… wow, I haven't been this relieved in years! I'm so glad that it's over!"
"We still have two more tests," Milkweed reminded her. "Battle and survival, right?"
Shade nodded. "That's right…" she managed to say before beginning to laugh hysterically herself. "Were any of us expecting such a hard test? How did they even pack so many questions onto one sheet of paper?"
Milkweed stared at the duo in hysterics on the floor in front of them. "You two seem close. How long have you known each other?"
"Since yesterday," Shade replied. She chuckled. "Yeah, I was close to dying in the woods, and Mizuchi helped me. We hit it off pretty quickly."
"Hit… it off?" the Sobble asked. "What does that mean?"
"It's a human saying. It means that we became friends really quick."
Milkweed's expression drew the attention of the duo. "Human?" the Cottonee asked.
"Oh boy," Shade sighed. "We never told you."
Mizuchi glanced at the Dreepy. "Should we tell them?"
Shade nodded. "We should. They're going to be on our team. So, I used to be a human…"
The Dreepy explained everything, from how she lost her memory and woke up alone in the woods, to meeting Mizuchi and finding out she was a Pokemon, and to coming to Spotlight Town and being persuaded to join the Guild. Milkweed thought about what to say next for a second.
"Hmm. So, you're a creature that's a myth to us, trapped in a world where you shouldn't exist. To top it all off, you're in a body that isn't your own, and without memories to go back to and try to find your home," the Cottonee finally answered.
"That's my predicament in a nutshell," Shade said, before realizing that she used another human saying. "Sorry, that's going to take some getting used to."
"It's certainly weird," they agreed. "It's probably best if you don't tell anyone else, though."
Shade hesitated. "...Why?" she asked, confused about what would happen if other Pokemon found out.
"Can we have everyone back into this… rather small room?" Amphibian called, poking his head out from behind the door.
"I'll show you the legend book after this," Mizuchi said with a somber tone in her voice.
What does that book say about humans that's so distressing? the Dreepy wondered.
Each Pokemon sat back down at the desks they were at before, for the most part. Some Pokemon changed spots. For example, the timid-looking Roselia that sat to Shade's left before was now in the back left corner. Instead, now a larger-than-normal Granbull sat at that desk, with a confident smile on her face.
"Name's Orc," she grunted, nodding at the Dreepy.
"Shade," she said, trying not to show that she was intimidated.
Orc chuckled. "Nevah seen wonna yer kind. Heard thin's though. Can yeh really float through walls?"
The Dreepy realized something. Can I really do that? She gasped, before realizing that she was still in a conversation. "I've never tried," she decided, looking the Granbull in the eyes- or, more accurately, the eye. The left one was firmly shut, with a faint scar over it. The right one was an odd orange color.
"Huh. How 'bout jus' floatin'? I've seen yeh hoverin' 'bout. How d'ya do it?" Orc leaned closer to Shade, her massive form getting even more intimidating.
"I just think about floating, and I do it," she replied, remembering how Mizuchi taught her. "I don't know if that's how other Dreepy do it. I wasn't taught by one."
The Granbull glanced over at the Sobble waiting for Amphibian to find the stack of tests. "Yeh mean her? A Sobble taught yeh?"
Shade replied with a nod. "Yeah. I wasn't raised in a Dreepy community." It's probably best if you don't tell anyone else, she reminded herself. Milkweed's warning would have to do for now until she learned why.
"Ah see. Yer an outsider. Where are yeh from?" Orc's nose was practically touching the Dreepy's now.
"Just outside of town." Mizuchi's lie from talking to Coin yesterday weaved its way into Shade's answer.
"Well, good thin' yeh came here b'fore the monsters gotcha. Wha' 'bout…"
"Found them!" Amphibian cried suddenly, triumphantly lifting up a stack of papers. Orc grunted, turning back towards the front of the room. Shade turned her head towards the Salandit who showed the results to Insight.
"I will now announce each team's results," she said, putting a wing onto the first two papers, stuck together with what seemed to be tree sap. "Gate and Igneous, pass."
With each name that the Guildmaster said, the louder the remaining Pokemon's heartbeats got. The first failure came only three teams in, in the form of a Rampardos named Rex and a Fraxure named Slayer.
"Hold on. Is this a mistake or something?" Rex asked as Slayer broke down the door and ran out.
The suspense never left the room, and eventually Guildmaster Insight's wing brushed aside a pair of tests belonging to a pair of twin Murkrow to reveal a unique grouping of three tests.
"Shade, Milkweed, and Mizuchi."
