What if a smaller Colonial ship survived the Fall of the Colonies? Follow the Centaur Class Chiron
Chapter 4
Ofis A in orbit of New Hadrian

"Sitrep" said Cmdr. Jasper. The Raptors were already ordered as soon as we reached the system to jump to the asteroid belt and other known Colonial locations. Jasper had decided to take a somewhat cautious approach. She had the Chiron jump to a few minutes travel to the planet on a "polar" heading.
Anders took a few seconds to put all the information on her screens together. "Sir I am reading around 12 Cylon vessels that appear to be similar to their old Heavy Raiders. I am picking up multiple signs of nuclear weapons used on Asp City and the rest of the island. Sir, the Cylons have noticed us and are now heading towards us. ETA 2 minutes."
There was some quiet talk between Lt. Anders and Lt. Drakos to turn the ship to face the Cylons. The Chiron had the standard Colonial design of top heavy point defense and armor and with forward facing weapon systems. Which worked fine when ships worked in groups but a weakness when being by itself.
"Guns let me know if you pick up any radiologicals coming from the Toasters" said Jasper.
"Yes sir" said Anders. Somewhat surprised to get called by the informal tactical officer title. Jasper is usually a bit of a stickler for decorum. "Sir we have 24 missiles inbound and 2 of the Cylon Raiders just jumped out. The others appear to be on collision course! The missiles enter our firing solution in 10 seconds and will hit in 30."
"Fire missiles at the incoming Cylon Raiders" said Jasper. She had been hoping to avoid using her missiles as they would take minutes to reload but the Cylons were trying to ram or board her ship. 3 of the 4 hit and destroyed the incoming Cylons.
The Chiron was able to bring almost 40 of it's point defense systems towards the incoming Cylon missiles along with 6 of it's 8 heavy guns. The counter show the incoming missiles counted down very slowly Anders thought. 24,16,7, 3 shit. "Brace for impact" as 2 missiles hit the Chiron.
"Sir damage appears to be minor. We still have 7 Cylon Raiders inbound." The Cylons were getting more spread out. 3 of the Cylon vessels appeared to have taken damage. The heavy guns now able to concentrate on the Cylon Raiders were able to destroy them before they were able to reach the Chiron.
"Status report" said Marton.
"Sir we are getting reports of 11 dead with 6 wounded" said Anders. "No Cylons on Dradis."
"Sir no communication yet from Juno or any of the Raptors" said Lt. Stevenson. Not a surprise as they were 10 light minutes away and they had only been in the system for just over 5. Still good to know.
"Those 2 Cylons didn't jump out because they were avoiding combat. They have friends somewhere. Let's stay focused everyone" said Jasper.

"Sir we have Scooter on coms" said Lt. Stevens.
"Chiron actual. What did you find" said Jasper.
"Sir the main refueling and mining locations in the belt have been destroyed. We were able to rescue 2 ships but we are not yet aware of any more survivors" said Lt. Sanders "Scooter". "We did destroy 4 Cylon Raiders and Juno is doing SAR."
"Scooter I would like you to" started Jasper. Then a Cylon Basestar jumped in. "Scooter go tell Juno to get out now." Jasper knew this ship was beyond their abilities to fight. That it appears to have over 200 Raiders only made things worse. "Lt. Drakos get us out of here."

Author's notes
The Cylon Raider here is actually the Heavy Raider. There were both regular Raiders and Heavy Raiders in the First Cylon War. Not sure if Heavy Raiders are canon in the First War but they seem too useful so I am adding them. Also this avoid the "why are you using the same name" question. When the Basestar arrived the difference was obvious.
The Chiron is for those who are curious about the same size but different design than the Colonial Defender which I think is a cool ship. I will give more detail later but the Colonial Navy had some ships that for various reason weren't well designed for after the Cylon War. The Guardian design had several variants of which this ship is a Centaur. Also staffing with the Adar and Admiralty planned revamp of the fleet is what is causing the lack of mid level officers (I have not mentioned a Captain). This also will be explained in a few chapters.
But I have thrown a lot of names out there so I would like to give the people on the Chiron a quick list.
Lt Cmdr Ronda Jasper. She's a Lt. Cmdr. due to the Chiron being a smaller ship and this rank is equal to Colonel. Think the oddities of the rank and title of Captain in our various navies.
