Chapter 10
Pilot's Briefing Room
LT. Anders was feeling tired. Her regular duty shift had started 5 hours before the attack and she had been on duty for almost the entire time. When this meeting was done she needed to check on her petty officers that they were not running themselves ragged. Then hopefully she could get some rack time before the morning briefing. At first things went well with coming up with a plan to perform a major reconnaissance on the Colonies (gods hopefully not needed) but now the CAG and Juno were starting to get into the minutiae of pilot rotations and CAP. Time to reign this in. "So we are in agreement that 2 Raptors with Slider and Matchbox and their regular ECOs" she asked. "Sir what are your recommendations for pilots?" Also she was going to need a "XO" for the survey mission and one of the Viper pilots for that roll would cause the fewest headaches for the Chiron.
Captain Limaki was thinking. LT. Hamlin has the credentials but while "Warlock" hasn't shown that being the only survivor of his squadron has effected him (much) still best to keep an eye on him. "LT. for your second on the Libran Dream I am recommending LT. Gavin. He is a solid officer and is able to keep junior officers in line. For the pilots of the Erniki and it's hopefully shorter mission LT. Jorins and LT. Birghum. They commonly fly together and are a good pair. For the Libran Dreams Lt. Ambero and Ensign Meyers." Captain Limaki knew this mission is important. Still "Kye" is the weakest Viper pilot and probably headed for ECO duty anyway and the "twins" somehow are far more as a pair then they are separately.
LT. Anders looking over the pilot information didn't have much opinion but "Limes" seems to know his people. "Thank you sir. Would you like to inform your people?" Politely ordering your superiors is a useful skill.
"Yes LT I will let them know about their upcoming duty changes" said Captain Limaki.
Chiron LT. Anders Quarters
It took another 30 minutes and several stops to get the remainder of her (temporary) crew figured out. She was then able to contact PO Walker to make sure that everyone is getting at least some sleep and food. Another hour or so of paperwork to do before getting some sleep and then briefing the Commander and XO on her plan. Very likely she will be back in the Cyrannus System in about 24 hours. Yes sleep will be no problem she thought sarcastically.
Chiron Officer Briefing Room
Commander Jasper was listening to LT. Anders go over the final briefing. Her initial plan was good with only a few "suggestions" from her Commander and XO offered earlier. LT. Greene had reported that his people were ready and the supplies needed was prepared. That should be the last of it.
"Thank you LT. Anders. Does anyone have any final questions" Commander Jasper asked. After no one said yes she continued. "In that case we have two final pieces of business. First the mission is a go in 15 hours. Second LT. Anders come over here." As Anders walked over from the podium she was giving her briefing Major Marton also approached. "LT. for your hard work and dedication I would like to hereby promote you to the provisional rank of Captain. Major if you would present the rank badges to Captain Anders." After the short ceremony and cheering people resumed their duties.
Author's Notes
LT. Anders was the "third in command" on the Chiron. Promoting her just clears up some rank issues for the Kestrel survivors. The promotion is provisional because a Commander usually can't promote on their own. There's rules and promotion boards and things like that. In war (which they certainly are in) or if split off from high command (which they obviously will be) this falls under "Commander's Discretion". Just a slight chance the "provisional" might be removed soon.

Warlock is the only survivor of another squadron the "Falcon's Fury" squadron from the Kestrel. He seems OK or at least as much as anyone with all that is going on. However Limaki isn't sure and is playing it cautious. Plus he doesn't know Warlock as well and is less certain about how he would do as a temporary "XO".
"Melon" is a veteran Viper pilot. Was being considered for squadron command and was in charge of training the "nuggets" the Red Talons had received.
"Frizzy" is a "good pilot/good eco". In case one of the Raptors needs someone.
"Kye" is a mediocre pilot but is ECO qualified. IF the Chiron had the time and Vipers his issues probably could be fixed. But for now at least Limaki has more pilots than Vipers so patience isn't going to happen.
"Black Eye" and "Bubbles" are called the twins because they always try to fly together. They work great as a team but far less well without the other.
Limaki was trying to avoid using the Ensigns and this limited his choices. In his opinion this was the best he could come up for the Cyrannus mission.
The Cyrannus system is the "official" one with 4 stars in one solar system (or maybe two binaries that are orbiting each other). I strongly doubt this would work but "meh" it's canon.
